I would like to say a massive THANK YOU for a fabulous day out to Bath last Wednesday. The service from your staff was exemplary. They were quick, polite and friendly. The menu was superb – top marks to the chef! The whole trip was extremely well-organised and all the details were clearly explained. Well done to the whole team (including the office staff and footplate crew of course!) We hope to see you again some time and will definitely be recommending you to our friends.

I went with husband today on the Shakespeare Express. We had a wonderful time our ticket included a full breakfast on the outward journey and afternoon tea on the return journey. The food was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this for a wonderful day out. Can't wait to go again.

The Polar Express was a great family experience. If you’ve watched the movie then this hits the spot. There’s no CGI or fancy light show just good simple family fun. We loved it, great for younger children who’ve seen the movie.

We went for a ride out to Llandudno on Clun Castle. The whole thing was efficiency run and well organised. I've been on many heritage railways before but being able to ride on a steam train on the main railway lines was something else. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience!!!

Truly had the best time, did not really know what to expect but we had a fabulous time. The food was excellent, the staff were incredible and the entertainment was hilarious.. this is something you must get involved with if you want the best experience out of it.. all four of us would definitely do this again.

In the Summer I took my family, husband myself, and one of our children who is in a wheelchair, the staff were AMAZING to us, they were so considerate, helpful. Really cant say a big enough thank you to all of them, it made a beautiful day out even better. Looking forward to the Valentines dinning .....minus the kids x

We had a lovely day on a beautiful steam train by vintage trains all the staff were friendly and helpful from start to finish we dined in a Pullman car it is very recommended.

England's best heritage train routes

England’s iconic railways link thriving cities, picturesque villages and some of the country’s most striking and inaccessible autumn and winter scenery. With everything from modern locomotives to historic steam trains to choose from, a steam-powered adventure can be as big as your imagination. So jump aboard as we journey through the country’s rich railway heritage, for a train ride to remember.

The Night Riviera Sleeper

London Paddington

Dream of waking up to sprawling beaches, roaring surf and the winding coastal paths of the southwest following a trip on Great Western Railway’s  Night Riviera Sleeper . Linking London Paddington with a host of towns, cities and holiday resorts in Cornwall, the train offers comfortable one and two-bed compartments and a multitude of other facilities.

The Settle-Carlisle Railway

The Arten Gill Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

For a journey through the outdoor delights of the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines, plan a trip on the  Settle-Carlisle Railway . Dating back to the mid-19th century, the 73-mile stretch features notable tunnels and viaducts, and was the last mainline railway to be constructed almost entirely by hand. Following the natural landscape of the region, the train passes over the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct and through an array of lush moorlands on this railway adventure. Daily diesel train services run on the mainline, while specialist operators also run classic steam locomotives on selected days of the year.

Belmond British Pullman

London Victoria

Those yearning for stress-free, luxurious travel can embark on a lavish adventure through the countryside aboard a  Belmond British Pullman , whose restored carriages embody the golden age of 1920s and 1930s train travel. With routes to vibrant cities, ancient castles and grand estates, travel in style on the way to discovering the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath or the story behind William Churchill’s birthplace at Blenheim Palace.

There are a number of iconic railway hotels to discover in London, including a landmark of Victorian splendour, the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel . Overlooking St Pancras Station, it dates back to 1873 and is inseparably linked to the railways. Having taken over much of the premises of the Midland Grand Hotel, designed by George Gilbert Scott, the luxurious five-star accommodation has a rich and eclectic history. Its centrepiece is a stunning Victorian Gothic staircase, lovingly restored to its 1901 glory. Alternatively, opt for a stay in the ‘world’s first grand railway hotel’, right in the heart of Kings Cross St Pancras. The lavish  Great Northern Hotel  opened its doors in 1854 and has been welcoming travellers ever since.

Bluebell Railway

Sheffield Park Station

As one of England’s first preserved heritage railway lines, the Bluebell Railway includes a fine collection of vintage steam locomotives, which run along an 11-mile stretch of track in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Railway lovers can experience the recreated trains, hailing from the 1880s through to the 1960s.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway

Cheltenham Race Course Station

Surrounded by spectacular views of the Cotswolds, the  Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway  crisscrosses its way past sleepy hamlets and fields sparkling with autumn frost. You can venture from Cheltenham Racecourse to Broadway as steam fills the air, whizzing past chocolate-box cottages and winding country lanes in the process. Breathtaking vistas of the Malvern Hills, Wales and the Vale of Evesham await.

The Swanage Railway

Swanage Station

A steam train on the heritage Swanage Railway line.

Dream of following a historic route from Victorian times along England’s south coast from Wareham to Swanage, a trip that originally cost travellers 11 old pence! The Swanage Railway  stretches for nearly 10 miles and travels through Dorset’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in vintage style, past rolling hills, atmospheric winter woodland and even William the Conqueror’s  Corfe Castle . With its roots hailing back to 1885, the numerous vintage steam-hauled locomotives take you on a journey through the ages, arriving at (or departing from) the Victorian resort of Swanage. Having adhered to the We’re Good To Go industry standard, trains from Swanage to Norden station resumed in mid-July. Head to the  Swanage Railway website  for the latest information.

If you’re dreaming of waking up to stunning sea views, you can book a stay at the luxurious Pines Hotel , Swanage. Offering a serene setting in which to switch off, many of the rooms feature stunning sea-facing balconies.

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway

Havenstreet Station

Both a vintage steam train museum and functioning train line, the award-winning  Isle of Wight Steam Railway  is a dream-worthy day out if you want to experience more than  150 years  of transport history.  The 10-mile line allows you to travel in vintage carriages and wagons, pulled by impressive steam locomotives, with a number of historic station stops along the way. A highlight stop is the restored 1940s Havenstreet station, which houses a train discovery centre, fascinating museum and wagon workshops.

History buffs can look forward to staying in the Grade-II listed  Arreton Manor , a private house that has been owned by no less than eight monarchs. It’s now open to overnight guests and the annexed Nook has its own take on modern yet rustic décor, offering a cosy space with traditional timber beams and a majestic king-sized bed.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Pickering Station

A traditional steam train in the North York Moors National Park.

A dazzling example of a heritage railway, if you’re longing for a dose of ‘slow travel’ why not dream of absorbing the stunning Yorkshire countryside aboard the  North Yorkshire Moors Railway . Stops along the 24-mile route include the chance to travel back to the 1930s at the restored Pickering station, the 1912-themed Levisham station, and Grosmont station – which film enthusiasts might recognise as the filming location for Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films. This line takes you to one of Yorkshire’s historic gems, the coastal town of  Whitby , where you can plan to see ancient ruins, walk the famous 100 steps and enjoy a traditional portion of fish and chips, a hearty traditional treat for the cooler months!

Those wanting to add a touch of modern luxury to their heritage adventure can book a stay at  Horngarth , nestled in the heart of Whitby. Alternatively, if you’re seeking a relaxing night in more traditional surroundings, you can plan a stay at Whitby’s 16th century  Bagdale Hall Hotel . Complete with beamed ceilings, stone mullion windows and grand four-poster beds, you’ll feel as if you’re waking up in England's Tudor past!

Ravenglass and Eksdale Railway

Ravenglass Station

Winding through the foothills of England’s highest mountains, the seven-mile open-air  Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway  passes some of the most dramatic landscapes in all of Britain. Dating back to 1875, the route begins at Ravenglass, the Lake District National Park’s only coastal town. It passes a number of stops along the way, including Muncaster Mill and Beckfoot before arriving at Dalegarth station in Eskdale – all great spots for hikes through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lake District, which promises a sea of autumn colour and memorable winter rambles. If you fancy a touch of opulence, you can dream of boarding the first-class observation carriage for the best views of the stunning scenery passing by.

Why not plan to end a day of Lake District discovery in the four-star 16th century  Sella Park Country House Hotel , in a setting that includes peaceful gardens that sweep down to the River Calder.

The North Norfolk Railway

Holt Station

Plan a tranquil trip through decades of heritage by booking a journey along the 10-mile  North Norfolk Railway . Each of their stations offer a steam-adorned trip through glorious by-gone eras, taking in the enamouring countryside of North Norfolk along a route featuring epic woodlands to the south and the tranquil coastline to the north.

The last station stop is Sheringham, a traditional seaside town wonderfully located for scenic winter walks. Those wanting to spend a restful night here can stay at the nearby  Dales Country House .

Tanfield Railway

Steam locomotive N.C.B No.49 with a colliery passenger train steaming along the Tanfield Railway, the World's Oldest Railway in North East England

Climb aboard the world's oldest railway in County Durham, where you'll journey through six miles of rolling countryside and wooded valleys along the Tanfield Railway . This steam train is decked out in decadent Victorian carriages, letting you immerse in a bygone era. Look out for Causey Arch - it's said to be the world's oldest surviving single-arch railway bridge.

Learn about the British Pullman

The carriages.

This restored 1920s train has sheltered royalty and been a star of the silver screen. Each whimsically-named carriage has a story to tell. Explore Audrey, Vera, Minerva and more to discover their distinctive personalities. Delight in antique-style marquetry, vintage lighting and heritage upholstery, where our passion for preserving history is evident at every turn.

Train carriage with French-polished wall panels and a woodland marquetry design

Damaged in 1940 by air raid at Victoria Station, repaired and rejoined Brighton Belle in 1947. Carried the Queen, the Queen Mother and H.R.H. Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh to review the Fleet in 1953. Transported the Queen on her visit to Sussex University 1964.

An art deco carriage features French polished walls, ziggurat shaped mirrors, exquisite marquetry and inviting seats

Cygnus was used in the special Festival of Britain rake in 1951, and was often reserved for use by Royalty and visiting Heads of State. It featured in the film ‘Agatha’ with Vanessa Redgrave and Dustin Hoffman.

In 2021, Cygnus was reimagined by filmmaker Wes Anderson. The new look features stunning symmetrical marquetry, bold rectilinear shapes and a visual feast of complementary colours.

View through a glass partition of a blue-patterned armchair under ornate marquetry

In 1948 was used, with sister car Mona, to convey H.M. Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) to Brighton. Brighton Belle service withdrawn in 1972. Preserved as a restaurant at The Horseless Carriage, Chingford, Essex, and later at the Colne Valley Railway, Castle Hedingham, Essex.

The Greek Muse Erato is depicted in a flowing gown and flower crown playing her lyre in an exquisite example of marquetry

1925 by Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. Sold to La Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits et des Grands Express Européens for service in Italy. History: Purchased by the Pullman Car Company Ltd. in 1928 and returned to Britain for Golden Arrow service. Entered Cunard boat train service between Victoria and Southampton 1952. Retired 1968.

Red velvet curtains frame the windows as a waiter, dressed in white jacket with gold epaulettes, sets the table for dinner

Built in 1928 as a First Class kitchen car. Served on Ocean Liner services and Bournemouth Belle until 1939. Later ran on Queen of Scots, Golden Arrow, Yorkshire Pullman, South of Wales Pullman and the high speed Talisman route before retiring in 1968.

A detailed mosaic in tiny tiles of sunset oranges and reds depicts the Greek goddess, Rhea, holding her open palm to lioness

Built in 1928 as a First Class parlour car for the Queen of Scots Pullman. Transferred to Southern Region in 1963 and ran in Bournemouth Belle until 1967. Preserved by Mr E. Lewis-Evans at the South Eastern Steam Centre, Ashford until 1984.

View through a partition window of a formal dining table on a vintage train

Built in 1927 and served many Pullman routes. Joined the Devon Belle in 1947 and the Golden Arrow in 1951, being used in the special Festival of Britain rake. Often included in special trains for state visits and royal use in the early 50s.

A mosaic in tiny tiles of blue and white depicts Greek God Perseus riding the winged horse, Pegasus, across golden skies

Designed in the 30s but not completed until 1951. Used in the special Festival of Britain rake as part of the Golden Arrow service. Formed part of Winston Churchill’s funeral train in 1965. Part of the last journey of the Golden Arrow in 1972.

View through the aisle of a vintage train carriage with navy blue armchair seating

Favourite carriage of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother: used by General de Gaulle and visiting Heads of State; made last journey of Golden Arrow 1972. Became stationary restaurant in Lyon, France 1973.

A waiter sets a table in an art deco carriage. Divine marquetry on the wall behind him shows a gazelle leaping a gold hillock

Vera was directly hit in an air raid at Victoria Station in 1940. Roof extensively repaired, she rejoined Brighton Belle in 1947. Used by Royalty to review the Fleet in 1953 and for Prince Charles’ and Princess Anne’s first trip on an electric train in 1954. Brighton Belle service withdrawn in 1972. Preserved as a garden house in Suffolk.

Classical Roman-style design in marquetry on a French-polished wooden wall panel

Built in 1928 as a First Class parlour car. After the war, she joined Queen of Scots and Yorkshire Pullman until 1955, and then the Golden Arrow until 1960. Retired in 1965 as part of the final run of the Tees-Tyne Pullman.

This was a wonderful tour. Chris was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and the sites. It was a small group, and being picked up and dropped off at our hotel was so convenient; so it was like having your own personal tour guide. There are dramatic landscapes and poignant moments in historic churches and ruins. There were enough stops along the way, and enough time in Whitby to do your own thing. I would highly recommend this tour! KL

This was the most amazing day ever! We were all All Creatures Great and Small fans so it made for a great day seeing all the sites. Chris was so accommodating! This tour is worth every penny to be able to focus on what you really want to see! I would do it again if I come back to York!

I can’t say enough about this tour. It was absolutely fantastic. I honestly can say I have never had a better tour guide. Chris literally drives you through his home and provides a wonderful balance of history and lore as he takes you along back roads that lead to areas only he knows about. He even added an extra piece to the end of the tour, which he could have secretly skipped. He is also very personable, talking about home life growing up in the area. The tour itself was fantastic and it was brought to exceptional life with the help of our tour guide. This is a must for those who want to experience the history and culture of Yorkshire.

TripAdvisor

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain's most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

jacobite

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan (see below and subject to time permitting). Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer's day, you can see the "Small Isles" of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films "Highlander" and "Local Hero".

MALLAIG IS OUR DESTINATION

But as the travelling is as much a part of the experience as the arrival we hope you enjoy this spectacular railway journey, regarded as one of the greatest in the world.

FORT WILLIAM

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the southern end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britains highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the West Highlands.

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the Harry Potter films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause on the viaduct, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Subject to time permitting, we will stop at Glenfinnan station. Once stopped in Glenfinnan there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. The Jacobite may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

The village of Arisaig (the Safe Place) is centred on the sheltered shore of Loch nan Ceall (Loch of the Cells). From this very tranquil village it is possible to take the boat, The Sheerwater to the Small Isles (until mid September). The local Highland Games takes place here annually on the last Wednesday in July at Traigh Farm.

The end of the line, Mallaig was founded during the 1840s when the owner of the North Morar Estate, Lord Lovat, divided up the farm on the coast here into a series of parcels of land and encouraged his tenants living around Loch Morar and Loch Nevis to resettle in what became Mallaig and establish a fishing village. Today Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye, the Small Isles and to the Knoydart Peninsula to visit Inverie and the most remote pub on mainland Britain, The Old Forge. In addition, you can board MV Western Isles for a scenic Wildlife Cruise. Arriving in Mallaig we have over an hour and a half to enjoy a walk round and take in the atmosphere: there are shops, bars, restaurants and plenty of fish and chips to be enjoyed during the lunchtime stopover.

CPKC’s Final Spike Anniversary Steam Tour

train surrounded by people

On April 29, 2024, Canadian Pacific steam locomotive No. 2816 crossed into the United States at Portal, N.D., for the first time in over a decade.  The engine is powering a tour covering three countries to celebrate the anniversary of the Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern becoming the new CPKC corporation.

Canadian Pacific H-1b 4-6-4 No. 2816 was built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1930. The engine ended service on Montreal area commuter trains in 1960, and was subsequently acquired by F. Nelson Blount for his Steamtown collection. In 1998, Canadian Pacific under CEO Robert Ritchie, reacquired the engine from Steamtown NHS and sent the engine to Vancouver, British Columbia, for a restoration to operational service. The engine returned to steam in 2001. Dubbed “The Empress,” the 2816 initiated the new Canadian Pacific steam program. The engine toured the CP system including a few visits to the United States for ten years until a change in Canadian Pacific leadership brought CEO E. Hunter Harrison on board, and the 2816 was retired and stored in Calgary’s Ogden Shops.

A change in fortunes for the 2816 occurred in 2020 with the appointment of new CEO Keith Creel. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the country, the company decided to host a virtual Holiday Train, and the 2816 was fired up and operated around the Odgen shops area for filming purposes.

Shortly thereafter, plans were set in motion for the eventual Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern merger to form the CPKC system.  The 2816 was put in the shops for a full rebuild to bring the engine up to current FRA specifications. With this, additional work converted the engine from grease lubrication to an oil-fed lubrication system based on Southern Pacific practices, and PTC was added. No. 2816 returned to operational service in 2023, and several test runs ironed out the expected teething issues.

With the merger approved, CPKC announced a Final Spike tour would operate with the 2816 leading a passenger train from Calgary, Alberta across Canada, into the United States, and down to Mexico City, scheduled for three months between April and June 2024. Subsequently, CPKC posted a list of display stops and a tour schedule with a live tracker on a special webpage for the tour at Final Spike 2816 Steam Train .

Train of the hour

On April 24, the railroad opened the Odgen Shops in Calgary to the public with the 2816 under steam, along with various tents for the railroad along with Operation Lifesaver.

Two days later, the No. 2816 departed Calgary with FP9s Nos. 1401 and 4107, along with new hydrogen fuel-cell diesel No. 1001, two water tanks, a boxcar, and 14 passenger cars.  The 1001 was dropped at the first day’s destination of Medicine Hat, Alberta, and the 2816 and F-units continued on the following morning for the run to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. After a display date in Moose Jaw, the Final Spike tour turned south and crossed into the United States at Portal, N.D. to end the day in Minot on April 29.  April 30 found the 2816 on display in Minot, and the engine will depart on May 1 headed for Minneapolis, Chicago, Kansas City and points south.

Continue to follow Trains Magazine and Trains.com for continuing coverage of the Final Spike tour with livestream events from display sites. We are also filming  a DVD covering the history of the Canadian Pacific, Kansas City Southern, the new CPKC System, and the No. 2816 to be released for the holidays.
