The 2024 World Snooker Championship is underway in Sheffield and there is a lot of money up for grabs.

Ronnie O'Sullivan is looking to lift the trophy at the Crucible for a record eighth time.

O'Sullivan is a seven-time champion of the world

A few of the other favourites have crashed out, including last year's winner Luca Brecel and multiple world champion Mark Selby .

However, there are still some top players remaining and looking to claim the title.

And by the end of the marathon 17-day tournament, one man will walk away significantly richer.

World Snooker Championship 2024: Prize money

Of course, 147 is the highest possible in snooker.

However, they are rare, so any break in the high 130s or 140s stands a chance.

Now, it does get a bit complicated because there are multiple different amounts of prize money available.

For the highest break at the tournament, including the qualifying stage, there is a total of £15,000 up for grabs.

This would be shared if multiple players achieve the same score.

The Crucible is an iconic venue

If a player hits a maximum [147] in the tournament, they get another £40,000. If it happens in qualifying, the player earns £10,000.

The only player to hit a 147 this year is Noppon Saengkham, who achieved that feat in qualifying before crashing out.

Interestingly, there is a further incentive to make a 147.

If a player makes two across the Triple Crown events [Masters, UK Championship and World Snooker Championship], they will grab a whopping £147,000.

However, with Ding Junhui out, Allen is the only remaining player who can earn this extra money this season.

Players competing on the World Snooker Tour will definitely earn £20,000 under a new scheme introduced this season.

The initiative, which will commence immediately in time for the ongoing 2022/23 campaign and is open to all 130 professionals, has been launched in an effort to offer security to lower-ranked players.

Players will receive £10,000 in September and a further £10,000 in January, helping to ease woes during a difficult economic period.

However, the sum will be offset against prize money from snooker events, meaning if players earn £20,000 or more through victories on the Main Tour, they will have the up-front payments deducted.

There has long been a call for players to earn a minimum amount in prize money, especially after achieving professional status.

During the 2021/22 campaign, 88 professional players earned at least £20,000 through prize money earned on the circuit, with the remaining 34 competitors falling short of that mark.

To be in with a chance of winning some money of your own, check out the Bet365 links here that provide options for fans all around the world to back their favourite snooker players.

WST Chairman Steve Dawson said: “We are delighted to join forces with the WPBSA and its players organisation to fund this new programme.”

“We recognise that these are tough times for many people given the cost of living crisis and that a £20,000 guarantee provides an important level of reassurance for many players who need to plan and prepare for life on tour.

“The top stars on our tour earn vast sums, in fact three years ago we saw Judd Trump become the first player to earn £1 million in prize money in a single season.

“But we recognise that further down the rankings, there are no guarantees.

“We have brought in this new system to support the many talented players who may need a level of security to fund their snooker careers.

“Before Matchroom took control of the sport in 2010, overall prize money had sunk as low as £3.5 million and all players had to pay around £5,000 a year in entry fees.

“We have since scrapped entry fees and the prize money levels are far higher. Due to the pandemic, we have not been able to stage ranking events in China since 2019, which has adversely affected our tour.

“But we will return to China as soon as restrictions are reduced, and we are striving to create new events, as we have done with the British Open , Turkish Masters, Hong Kong Masters and World Mixed Doubles.”

WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson added: “This new initiative is a fundamental shift in the way we are underpinning the future of our sport.

“This clearly shows the importance of our new structure at the WPBSA where players are represented and listened to through their own WPBSA players body, and I would like to thank the WPBSA players board for their support.

“In addition, this demonstrates the value of becoming a World Snooker Tour card holder where we take talent retention and the welfare of our players seriously.”

Ronnie O'Sullivan retains world No. 1 spot ahead of bid for record eighth Crucible snooker title after Mark Selby defeat

Eurosport

Updated 02/04/2023 at 08:22 GMT

Ronnie O'Sullivan will begin his quest for a record eighth world snooker title in Sheffield as the sport's world No. 1. Mark Selby would have toppled O'Sullivan from the top spot if he had reached the Tour Championship final in Hull, but an agonising 10-9 defeat to Shaun Murphy on Saturday evening ended his hopes of regaining the position he held between 2011 and 2022 before the Crucible.

  • Craig Mahood , Betting & Gaming Writer

WE have reached the quarter-finals of the World Snooker Championship 2024 - and Ronnie O’Sullivan is in the mix.

The Rocket defeated Ryan Day 13-7 to secure his place in the last-8 where he will face Stuart Bingham.

While John Higgins downed Mark Allen 13-12 in an incredible clash which went down to the final frame.

  • Day Ten start time:  1pm BST

Allen backs Higgins

Mark Allen reckons John Higgins can win the tournament - IF he starts believing in himself.

He said: “Look, I had more enough chances to win that.

"I didn’t take them. Credit to John, he does what he does and cleared up in that final frame.

“It’s disappointing to lose on the black. John is a great player under pressure. That is one that got away. He can go on and win this if he believes in himself.”

Match stats

It was a hugely entertaining and nervy match - which have been few and far between in this tournament so far.

Here's how Higgins and Allen matched up.

Health freak Ronnie O’Sullivan admits intermittent fasting is giving him the hunger to become Crucible champion on Bank Holiday Monday.

The fitness-conscious Rocket is carefully watching what he eats as he tries to negotiate another slog of Sheffield snooker madness.

O’Sullivan, who is 49 in December, said: “I’m intermittent fasting for this tournament because it gives me more energy.

“It’s a tournament of endurance, stamina, concentration.

“Once the tournament’s over, I’ll be back to eating 24 hours a day but there are times when you have to work out what’s right for you.

“I go a certain period of time where I don’t eat. It’s just amazing for my body, the energy that you get from it.

“I cheated this morning, I had some milk in my tea! Tomorrow I’m going to try with no milk, a proper fast."

Quarter final line-up revealed

There we have it then. The quarter final line-up is complete after a couple of dramatic matches this evening.

Here's what we're looking at heading into the crunch part of this year's competition.

  • David Gilbert vs Stephen Maguire
  • Kyren Wilson vs John Higgins
  • Judd Trump vs Jak Jones
  • Stuart Bingham vs Ronnie O'Sullivan

Higgins reacts

An emotional John Higgins tells BBC: “That was crazy wasn’t it.

“That clearance was probably the best [I’ve had] when I think about everything I’ve been through the last couple of years, when fallin g at hurdles.

“So to do that with the biggest pressure. I actually felt great and I’m thinking ‘I have to go for the double’.

“Mark [Allen] has so much bottle. When he’s on that break I thought he’d done it again.

“He’s a gentleman, he’ll be devastated. But he said some nice words.

“I think I’ve still got it. I gave myself a chance with a new cue and that’s given me a bit of confidence and I fancied having a go at my shots.

“I’ve loved being out here. I’ve loved playing here and I’m proud of myself.

“I’ll give myself a pat on the back, I’m pretty good under pressure!”

Jack Lisowski 11-13 Stuart Bingham

Stuart Bingham follows John Higgins into the last eight after a dramatic match comes to a close on the other table.

No real pressure on Bingham in that frame as he hits a lead of 75-0 before Lisowski offers his hand in concession.

Another grueling match but it's experience that counts once more and Bingham is through!

Waiting on Higgins

The BBC reporting that he's yet to leave his dressing room, understood to be hugely emotional.

Allen reacts

Mark Allen speaking to BBC says: "I had more than enough chances to win it and I didn't take them.

"Credit to John. He does what John does.

"He's one of the good guys on tour.

"I'll be coming back."

Mark Allen 12-13 John Higgins

An incredible match. That'll be one of the images of the tournament.

And you can bet that picture will be in the papers tomorrow - especially north of the border.

The comeback in that frame starting with a sensational double.

Incredible.

HIGGINS HAS DONE IT!!

A 71 clearance sees him recover from 62-0 down to win the deciding frame against Mark Allen.

His arms are aloft and he looks incredibly emotional.

Remarkable scenes as he celebrates this huge win. The Wizard of Wishaw appears incredibly close to tears. That means so, so much to him!!

Mark Allen 12-12 John Higgins (62-44)

Incredible pot! Higgins' break is still on as it fires its way into the corner pocket.

Incredible stuff and he pots the brown.

Just colours to go and they're all on their spots.

Mark Allen 12-12 John Higgins (62-39)

One red to go. And it's near the bottom cushion.

Poor positional play on the black means he's left with a tricky shot on the red to keep this break going.

Jack Lisowski 11-12 Stuart Bingham (0-60)

Bingham still at the table in this break of 40. There's 75 on the table to play for so he's close to victory there but the reds aren't sitting pretty for him.

Mark Allen 12-12 John Higgins (62-1)

Higgins with a sensational double! It was the only shot that was on.

The crowd in here go absolutely crazy for that. If it'd missed, it was his lost shot of the championship!

But it arrows into the middle pocket and now he has a chance to close this gap right down.....

Mark Allen 12-12 John Higgins (62-0)

Nearly frame - and match - over there!

A 62 break for Mark Allen comes to an end when he overcuts a red into the left corner pocket!

It bounces relatively safe but Higgins springs out his seat, with 75 points to play for!

Mark Allen 12-12 John Higgins (6-0)

Allen with a great plant to sink a red into the left corner pocket and leave himself on the blue. That goes into the left centre pocket.

A little chance here to get into a strong position in this one.

Mark Allen 12-12 John Higgins

Higgins close with a long red into the corner pocket.

But he misses AND leaves the cue ball down the table.

Jack Lisowski 11-12 Stuart Bingham (0-20)

Bingham with an early lead in this frame but they're back trading safety blows.

We'll bring any major updates on this one but focus turns to the decider.

What a match it's been.

Mark Allen to break in the decider.

ONE FRAME SHOOTOUT!

Absolutely extraordinary. A final frame decider to see who gets their place in the quarter final as John Higgins clears up from that green that Allen left.

world snooker tour earnings

Mark Allen 12-11 John Higgins (41-37)

Higgins is snookered on the green but does get out it well.

And he's a couple of millimetres away from potting it! He leaves a good chance for Allen to pot....

But that JUST misses it bounces across the table and over the green pocket! A huge chance for Higgins....

Mark Allen 12-11 John Higgins (39-37)

Allen was snookered. But he plays off the near cushion to the red, sending the ball flying across the table and right into the centre of the right corner pocket!

Dennis Taylor labels it the 'shot of the championship' as Allen marches round to the cue ball. Did he mean it? Only he'll know.

But he has to play safe on the next shot with a narrow lead.

Jack Lisowski 11-12 Stuart Bingham

Great stuff from Bingham as he clears the table - after a lucky yellow to start!

But needing the black, he makes his way through the colours and clears up to edge in front in this one!

Mark Allen 12-11 John Higgins (33-37)

And it's tense here, too.

Down to the final red which is awkward on the right cushion. Higgins pots the black and looking to play for position on that red. But he canons into the blue and has to play the snooker.

Jack Lisowski 11-11 Stuart Bingham (72-58)

Jack Lisowski gets the important red!

And right on the pink, straight as you like, he MISSES it to the corner pocket!

Shaun Murphy fires warning to players tempted by breakaway snooker tour

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2024 - Day Seven

Shaun Murphy tells players considering leaving the World Snooker Tour that they should ‘be careful what they wish for’ as uncertainty could await them.

There have been plenty of rumours of a breakaway tour circling, with Judd Trump revealing he had been approached but dismissed the idea of leaving WST.

Mark Williams has been teasing that he may not be playing on the main tour next season , but nothing has been announced of a rumoured new circuit or who would be playing on it.

Murphy is well aware of the rumours but says he knows little about the venture and has not been approached to play himself.

‘It’s obviously something we’re talking about. We’ve heard a lot about it. I haven’t been approached by anybody, I don’t know anything about it,’ he said. ‘Nobody’s rung me.

‘I’m led to believe some players have signed NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) not to talk about it. I saw my name mentioned in despatches that I have. I haven’t. I don’t know anything about it and will finish this season and look to return to the tour next season.

‘I haven’t got any interest in it. As far as I’m aware it doesn’t exist. I haven’t seen anything about it. If that changes I’ll let you know, but at the moment I don’t know anything about it. It’s all rumour and hearsay, which I haven’t got time for.

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2024 - Day Eight

‘I don’t think many of us do the game any favours talking about these things. It’s just conjecture and rumour. These people who have been approached know more than I do. I was pleased to see Judd nail his colours to the mast. He’s obviously been approached. That’s more than me.’

Ronnie O’Sullivan will not be joining any rival tour after signing an agreement with Saudi Arabia, but he has backed any players to take whatever offer they feel is best for them and their families.

Murphy can see why players late in their career might be tempted by an offer of guaranteed money elsewhere, but suggests that might show a lack of loyalty.

‘I’ve seen comments from players saying they’ve got to make choices for their families and what suits them. I think that’s right,’ said the Magician. ‘These players have had their time, maybe, they’ve had their years.

‘They’ve taken and taken and taken from the sport and they want to take even more. Good luck to them. It’s a shame they haven’t considered putting a little bit more back into the tour that’s given them so much before they run away.

‘But I know very little about it. I’d be scared to comment on it really because I don’t know enough about it. I assume these players are being paid a lot of money and who am I to say they shouldn’t be taking it. I half understand it.’

Players are allowed to play exhibition events when WST tournaments are not being held, but Murphy is keen that anyone joining an actual rival tour, clashing with WST events, should not be able to dip back in.

‘I think I’d like to see a situation where players have to declare their allegiance one way or the other,’ he said. ‘They can play on the World Snooker Tour with the majors, the Triple Crowns, the history and heritage that Judd talked about.

‘Or they can go and play on a new tour with unknown backers, people we don’t know. How long does this pot of money last? It’s a case of be careful what you wish for.

‘I wouldn’t like a situation where players can go off and then come back and play in the Triple Crown events. I don’t think that should happen. You stick your flag in the ground, declare your loyalty somewhere and see how we go.

‘Players want the independence to play where they want when they want and I really do understand that. I’m not sure you can have your cake and eat it.’

Murphy was beaten 13-9 by Stephen Maguire in the second round of the World Championship on Sunday and the Scot had a different view on any opportunities that might be arising elsewhere.

The 43-year-old said: ‘I’m only hearing it from other players. I think it’s good.

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2024 - Day Nine

‘If somebody else is interested to come in and some of the numbers being thrown about is interesting.

‘My ears are always open, I’m always listening. I’ve not been approached, but my door’s always open. Why not? If there’s a few years guaranteed [money], especially someone like me who is having to go to these qualifiers. I know it’s my own fault, but I don’t enjoy it.

‘If there’s another opportunity there that doesn’t mean Barnsley, Leicester then I would seriously think about it. I’m listening, my phone’s always on.’

Judd Trump after his victory against Tom Ford on day eight in Sheffield

Judd Trump would not ‘get out of bed’ for rival snooker tour after rejecting offer

  • 2019 champion beats Tom Ford 13-7 and faces Jak Jones next
  • Trump admits to struggling with conditions of Crucible table

Judd Trump has revealed he rejected offers to join a rival snooker tour after cruising into the quarter-finals of the world championship with a 13-7 win over Tom Ford at the Crucible.

Trump says he has no interest in the prospective LIV-style breakaway, which is understood to emanate from east Asia and requires a commitment to play in eight regular events plus a grand final in exchange for a six-figure sign-on fee.

“A few people have tried to contact me and I just couldn’t be bothered,” said Trump. “If they try to contact me or my brother I just tell them to go away. I’m very happy where I am, with the tournaments I play in. I need something with history and heritage. I need something to play for. I don’t think I would really get out of bed for an exhibition series.”

Ronnie O’Sullivan has already in effect ruled himself out of any parallel tour by signing a deal to play in World Snooker Tour events in Saudi Arabia for the next three years. Although the WST recently relaxed its rules allowing contracted players to appear in other events provided they do not clash with its own, the scale of the prospective east Asian tour makes committing to both impossible.

Trump, who said contact had been initiated in recent months via his brother Jack, believes that without the sport’s biggest names the threatened breakaway is already redundant, adding: “I don’t think there’s enough players or enough names that could do damage. I think Ronnie is the only one if he left – to be honest, I don’t think people are that bothered by anyone else. I feel like with what I’ve established in the game alongside Ronnie, if I’m staying here then the tour will be a strong place.

“For me it’s about the titles. At the end of the day everyone wants more money but this isn’t the right time for me. I’d be a lot happier winning my money rather than getting gifted it. I love playing in the kind of tournament with something on the line. I don’t want to lose and feel nothing. I hate losing. I couldn’t imagine walking off and getting paid the same, win or lose. It’s not the same for me.

Judd Trump speaks to the media after his win.

“I’d love for World Snooker to big up the prize money and play for more in the future, but I want to do it with something on the line. Hopefully they can expand and take us to different territories. I’m just trying to win every tournament and get back to No 1.”

Resuming 11-5 in front, Trump fired breaks of 107 and 84 to complete his win and seal his place in the last eight for the 10th time in his career. Trump will play Jak Jones in the quarter-finals after the Welshman’s 13-9 victory over Si Jiahui in a scrappy second-round match. Jones has reached the last eight for the second year in a row and, at No 44, is the lowest ranked player left in the tournament. The result also ends the 21-year-old Si’s hopes of repeating last year’s run to the semi-finals.

Trump described his performance as average, and added: “The table was a bit heavy but I think I dealt with it, I wasn’t too harsh with myself and I was able to stay patient.”

Stephen Maguire punched the air after winning an epic final frame of the second session of his grudge match against Shaun Murphy to take a 10-6 advantage. The pair, who have feuded for two decades over an incident in which Maguire was penalised a frame for forgetting his chalk, resumed on Saturday with the Scot holding a slender 5-3 lead.

After barely being separated for much of the session, Maguire showed his emotions when he sunk the pink after clawing back a 63-point deficit in the 16th frame, putting clear air between the pair going into Sunday’s concluding session.

Mark Allen and John Higgins are locked together at 4-4 at the first session of their second round tie. The Northern Irishman started with a break of 119 in the opening frame but both players struggled and the Scot took the final frame of the day to pull level.

Kyren Wilson leads the qualifier Joe O’Connor 6-2 after the first session of their second-round clash, while Jack Lisowski trails 5-3 against the former champion Stuart Bingham, with both contests resuming on Sunday.
