Why travel with intrepid.

Girl dancing at the Taj Mahal

Bucket list itineraries

Sure, you can travel to India to see the Taj Mahal, but we like to share a laugh with a local chai wallah in the market while we’re at it. Our trips include loads of big-ticket attractions as well as plenty of unique and unexpected experiences you can only have with a local guide.

Leader talking to two travelers in Egypt

Legendary leaders

The best folks to show you around are the ones who live there. Our local leaders know these destinations like an old friend, so get ready to eat at the best street food joints, get to know the culture in depth and experience things you wouldn’t be able to on your own.

Traveler in Iceland sitting in a National Park

Creating positive change

We're on a mission to create positive change through the joy of travel. That’s why all our trips are carbon offset, and we give back to the communities we visit with the help of The Intrepid Foundation. When you travel with us, you travel with purpose.

Felucca full of travelers

Small groups

With an average group size of 10 people, our groups are big enough to create a good vibe but small enough to blend in with the locals. Whether you’re travelling solo or with mates, you’ll really get to know your group and will never be stuck for someone to grab a drink with.

Traveler ziplining in Cambodia

Great value

Want big-time experiences without the big-time price tag? Our 18 to 35s travel style means staying in simple, well-located accommodation, taking local transport and enjoying tasty local food. This way, you choose where your spending money goes.

Group of travelers cheers drinks in Budapest

We’re committed to ensuring our trips are safe for everyone, including our travellers, our leaders, our crew and the people we visit along the way. That’s why we’re always up to date with world events and changes. Rest easy – you’ll be well taken care of.

Highlights of our 18 to 35s trips

A group of travelers on a rowing boat along the Mekong in Vietnam

Venture through Vietnam

From the old-world streets of Hanoi to the bustling Ho Chi Minh City – and all the temples, motorbikes and banh mi in between – adventures await in Vietnam. On this epic 11-day adventure from north to south, we’ll get you chomping and slurping pho-nomenal food, kayaking around Cat Ba island (away from the tourists), cycling through ride paddies and crossing hectic Vietnamese roads like a local in no time.

A traveler standing at the base of Chichen Itza in Mexico

Munch your way through Mexico

Discover the real Mexico on an overland adventure from the sprawling metropolis of Mexico City to the white sand beaches and underground caverns of Playa del Carmen. Fill your belly with regional specialties in the foodie capital of Oaxaca (think everything from spicy mole to lime grasshoppers), uncover Mayan mysteries at Chichen Itza and swim in the dreamy Agua Azul waterfall.

A traveler standing below Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, India

Dive into India

Tick off the highlights of two iconic South Asian countries as you travel from lively Delhi to the patchouli-scented Kathmandu. Fall in love with the Taj Mahal, sail along the Ganges in the holy city of Varanasi, search for rhinos on a Chitwan Jungle safari and explore the remarkable Amber Fort in Jaipur – all that (and then some) in just 13 days.

Two travelers posing at the Heavenly Gates in Bali

See the best bits of Bali

There’s more to Bali than beaches and Bintang – though there'll be plenty of time to kick back with a cold one. Experience the highlights and hidden gems of Bali as you visit holy water temples, hike up the iconic Mt Batur volcano for sunrise, snorkel with sea turtles and dance in the golden hour glow of Seminyak's snazzy beach clubs.

A group of traveler admiring the sunset in the Sahara Desert

Journey into Morocco

Get an authentic taste of Morocco as you travel through the High Atlas Mountains, the cultural capital of Fes and the chaotic medinas of Marrakesh. Sleep under the stars in a desert camp in the Sahara, meet nomadic shepherds at a traditional Berber village and learn the ancient art of mint tea making at a community-run teahouse that supports local women.

A local gondola skipper standing on a bridge in Venice

Discover the heart of Europe

Ticking off European favorites including Berlin, Krakow, Prague and Budapest, this is the Central Europe trip you’ve dreamed about. Enjoy dinners in busy medieval squares, explore stunning hilltop castles and sleep in ridiculously Instagrammable towns that look like they belong in a fairy tale.

18 to 35s trip reviews

Is every trip guaranteed to run.

Our trips are guaranteed to depart once they have one fully paid customer, unless the minimum group size listed in the Essential Trip Information and/or Special Conditions state otherwise.

Do you cater for food allergies/dietary requirements?

We’ll try our very hardest to accommodate all dietary requirements, but it can be difficult to guarantee in some out-of-the-way places. We'll let you know if there are places on your itinerary where this is the case. Please let us know your dietary requirements at the time of booking and we’ll pass the information on to your leader.

What’s the standard of accommodation on an 18 to35s trip?

You’ll be staying in simple, well-located accommodation with shared amenities, though it's common for rooms to be ensuite. Rooming is organized on a twin-share basis. We pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports.

If your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you. If you'd like your own space, most of our trips also have the option to pay a fee for an individual room.

Will the accommodation have wi-fi?

Most hotels, cafes and bars have wi-fi, especially in big cities and towns. In remote places (like the Sahara and the Amazon Rainforest) or on treks or homestays, you won’t be able to access Wi-Fi or mobile data as easily. Your leader will give you a heads-up beforehand so you can call home or send a quick WhatsApp.

Your leader can also help you buy a local SIM card if you'd like to stay connected.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance?

You sure do. Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Your leader will take down your insurance details on the first day in case they are needed during the trip, so make sure to bring your policy documents.

Learn more about travel insurance .

Do I need any travel vaccinations?

Vaccination requirements differ depending on the destination, and as we’re not medical practitioners, unfortunately we can't advise on this issue. Please see your local GP or travel doctor for details and advice about current vaccination requirements.

Learn more about entry and health requirements for the destination(s) you’ll be visiting .

Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to join an 18 to 35s trip?

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Meet our local leaders

Intrepid leader, Nhi Pham

"When you travel with me we'll be hanging out with the locals, tucking into the best street food and trying to master Vietnamese pronunciation (FYI, it's hard!). Whatever we do, we'll laugh a lot and make amazing memories together. Pack your best smile and count on me for the rest – I'll be your local buddy."

- Nhi Pham, Vietnam

Intrepid leader, Paul Garrido

“It will be a pleasure to share our traditions and beliefs, take you to the most amazing sites and, most importantly, interact with the locals! Get ready for a behind-the-scenes tour where we’ll visit hole-in-the-wall restaurants and find the best picarones (Andean doughnuts) *chef’s kiss. I’ll be waiting for you here, in my beloved Peru.

- Paul Garrido, Peru

Intrepid leader, Huyen Nguyen

"You might come to Vietnam for the beautiful scenery, but you'll stay for the friendly people! I love introducing travellers to locals and having a chit-chat, going on spontaneous walks to explore the hidden spots and sharing stories to keep our beautiful culture alive."

- Huyen Nguyen, Vietnam

Travel for good

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That's why every Intrepid trip is aligned with a relevant partner through The Intrepid Foundation and a donation is given for every trip booked. You can see which partner is aligned with a trip in the Essential Trip Information under ‘The Intrepid Foundation’.

Learn more about The Intrepid Foundation

We've got trips to suit every adventurer – no matter your budget, interests or travel style. If you can't travel on an 18 to 35s trip, you can always book a seat on one of our other trips, which are open to all ages!

Around The World Adventures

A gap year is the perfect time to embark on an around the world trip, it’s rare to find that amount of time all in one go again! Who wouldn’t want to travel the world taking in lots of different countries on a once in a lifetime adventure?

Our group adventures operate in well over 100 countries around the world, so you will be spoilt for choice with where to go. Doing several group tours in your ‘Around the World’ trip ensures that you’ll have a bit of structure to your trip, have things paid for upfront so that even if you do start to run out of money you’ve already paid for your adventure, and it just makes it that much easier to make new friends. Plus, for a lot of parents out there it gives a bit of peace of mind that they know where you are and what you are doing.

We have put together plenty of ‘Around the World’ adventures so please don’t hesitate to get in touch and together we can create the perfect trip for you. Give us a call on  0208 004 8886 or send an email to [email protected] and we'll be sure to help.

What should I expect?

First and foremost a great time!! A multi-day small group guided tour designed for 18 to 30 year olds often aims to provide an exciting and immersive travel experience that appeals to the interests and preferences of young adults. Here's what you can typically expect from such a tour:

Adventure and Activities:  Expect a mix of adventure activities like hiking, biking, kayaking, snorkeling, or even adrenaline-pumping activities like zip-lining or bungee jumping, catering to the adventurous spirit of young travelers.

Cultural Experiences:  These tours often include visits to cultural and historical landmarks, local markets, museums, and opportunities to interact with local communities. This could include trying local cuisine, traditional dance performances, or workshops to learn about local crafts.

Group Dynamics and Social Interaction:  Given the target age range, the tour is likely designed to encourage social interaction and bonding among participants. Activities may be structured to facilitate friendships and group cohesion.

Flexibility and Freedom:  These tours often balance structured activities with free time, allowing participants to explore and have personal experiences. You may have the chance to choose optional activities or have evenings free to explore independently.

Nightlife and Entertainment:  Tours for young adults often include nights out in lively areas, visits to bars, clubs, or special events to experience the nightlife and entertainment of the destinations.

Educational Components:  There might be educational elements, like guided tours with local experts, workshops on photography, cooking, or other skills relevant to the region you're visiting.

Accommodations:  Accommodations could range from hostels and budget hotels to unique stays like glamping, treehouses, or local guesthouses. The emphasis is often on social and vibrant lodging options.

Transportation:  Travel between destinations could vary, ranging from private buses or vans to trains or even domestic flights, depending on the itinerary.

Tour Leaders and Guides:  You'll have experienced guides or tour leaders who can provide information about the destinations, help with logistics, and ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Safety and Support:  Safety measures and support will be provided throughout the tour to ensure the well-being of participants, especially given the adventurous nature of the activities.

Itinerary and Destinations:  The itinerary will likely cover a variety of destinations, from urban cities to natural landscapes, ensuring a diverse and enriching travel experience.

Cost Inclusions:  The tour cost often includes accommodations, some meals, guided activities, and transportation between destinations. It may also include entrance fees to attractions or cultural events.

It's important to review the specific itinerary and details provided by the tour operator to ensure the tour aligns with your interests and expectations.

Who else has booked on?

Good question! We aren’t able to give exact details on this, but please do get in touch and we'll give as much information as we can which is typically how many people, split of gender, solo travellers and couples and where everyone is from and their approximate age.

Where should I travel to?

South East Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia etc) is generally a very popular place for a Gap Year! It’s cheap, easy to get to in terms of flights and there’s tons to do. The food is incredible, the people friendly and don’t get us started on how amazing some of the beaches are! We have such a range of trips in this region you really won’t be disappointed.

Another popular region is Australia & New Zealand, there are so many appealing things about this area. Although more expensive than South East Asia it’s truly worth it, when you’re snorkelling in the Great Barrier reef, visiting shipwrecks on Fraser Island, seeing the amazing Milford Sound or spotting Dolphins in Kaikoura, you’ll be thrilled you came.

South America is becoming more and more popular as the years go on. It’s a stark difference to that of South East Asia, with completely different scenery, culture and food, but it’s equally worth a visit. How about checking out the Salt Flats in Bolivia, Iguassu falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina, climb the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru or visit one of Pablo Escobar’s homes in Colombia. There are endless things to do in this amazing continent, it's definitely a must see!

It's my first time away on my own, help!

Of course, that’s what we are here for! Don't worry, when travellers have their first time away from home the vast majority of people are nervous. It's always good to chat through things. It can seem like there is SO much stuff to think about and get right or plan for but the good news is, really there are only a handful of key items to address:

1. Where are you going and what do you want to do?

2. What to expect

3. Safety, your guide and emergencies

5. Communications

We can help with ALL of the above and more.

Often people want to know who else is going, what age they are and basically know a bit more about the group to make sure they'll fit in.  We can give information about the general group make up so do contact us if you're curious but also, it is very, very rare that a group doesn't work for you. People who take these trips and go onto gap years are often like-minded and share similar outlooks and interests. People are usually around the same age too and most of the time are mixed gender. If in doubt give us a shout!

As a final bit of advice, the first thing to start with is what you'd like to do and where you'd like to go, everything else will flow from that. If you already know, make contact with us! We can help with the rest.

Is it safe?

YES! Well, as safe as it can be! Travelling always carriers some danger but the good news about these tours are you have a guide and people so you get safety in numbers in local knowledge. This is a huge benefit of small group travelling.

Nonetheless there are some risks like you get on any trip (pickpockets for example) and of course your own behaviour can influence your safety so be street smart! (we can help with this too).

If you are nervous about certain destinations what you can do is head on over to the government website ( HERE ) and you can check out each country's safety and security, and sign up to receive any alerts.

How do I budget for my trip?

Good question and this really depends upon the tour(s) you're taking and where they are as costs will change a lot. We would say do make sure you've got some spare cash in your account and make sure you bring your bank card. For more information on budgeting, head to our destination pages to see how to budget for each country you want to visit.

Most people have a debit or credit card, either are fine. There is one advantage to a credit card is that it can be good for emergencies and / or if you run out of cash in your current account. A lot of travellers also tend to bring more of a ‘Travel Money Card’ providing better rates and more security. These work in the way of a bank transfer from your normal bank so you can load little and often onto the card to feel safer.

What about visas?

You may need one, best to contact us or check with the FCO. Visas depend upon your nationality, where you're going and how long for so it can be a tad complicated.

If you are a British national then please check our government website, you can access that HERE . You can type in the country you are going to and check out the entry requirements. These can change frequently so we suggest checking this well in advance of your trip and then shortly before you go to see if anything has changed.

Another good thing you can do on this website is sign up to receive any alerts, this means you'll be emailed if there is an update to anything to do with that specific country.

Do I need any vaccinations?

Maybe yes. Again, this is one of those areas which we can only answer with more information. Your best bet though is to phone your GP or local NHS travel clinic and ask once you've made your booking. You may need a round of vaccinations for some destinations so we suggest contacting them well in advance of your trip.

Alternatively you can visit your local pharmacy and ask as they'll often have a very good idea of what, if anything, you need. We do recommend you find out if you need anything as some diseases can be quite nasty so it's well worth protecting against.

The best start you can have to your Aus travels. They got us set up with Visas, pick up from the airport, Medicare and gave loads of advice for onward travel. It’s really reassuring to know that so long as you are in Aus you have someone to cal on for advice and ideas for your travels. The tour itself takes you to all the biggest tourist spots in Sydney and Port Stephens. Highlight for me was jet boat. Couldn’t recommend Intro Travel enough.

What people love about Australia Tours for Young Adults

Amazing time, had an absolute blast! I will 100% be doing another tour. Val was a great tour guide, and helped me with every question I had.
The trip was great. However, I didn’t like the hostel in Airlie Beach. It was the worst one in this trip. Overall was great
Really good trip with value for your money. We saw a lot of Australia in such a short time, given how massive Australia really is. Our guide, Tamar, was an absolute sweetheart, knowledgeable, well travelled and very professional. This tour has the right balance of group activities and independent activities if you choose to do so. My only complaint is that some of the accommodations were subpar, which was disappointing given the high cost of this trip.

Shopping Cart

Shopping cart items, what does adventure look like for the 18–30s traveller.

18 30 travel

Young travellers seek security and to travel with likeminded explorers who not only want to see world, but also want to tread lightly, interact culturally and contribute to the local communities they travel through. Guided touring continually evolves to meet the demands for adventure tours for the 18-30s traveller. Travelling solo with other likeminded peers is a theme for all tour operators in this space.

But what is adventure? The word itself is defined as an unusual and exciting or daring experience. One person’s adventure is simply being in another country with diverse customs, language and food; while another person’s adventure is trekking in the Andes, or hiking to Everest Base Camp. Others may find adventure in a ski trip in Japan or Austria and then there are those who want a culinary adventure in Thailand.

18 30 travel

When it comes to 18-30s adventurers, the world is their oyster. Tour operators offer worldwide destinations, a diverse range of experiences and travel styles. Coach tours, hiking tours, sailing and river cruising are all on offer, to name a few. There is a plethora of multi-day guided tours for young people, a travel style to match their personal style, a cost to match their budget and life affirming experiences to match their bucket list.

There are more options than ever before. Operating for over 50 years, Contiki now offer over 300 tours across 6 continents for 18-35 year old travellers. G Adventures have just released a tailored range of small group tours (22 pax) for the 18-39 age group. These tours cover a lot of ground in a flexible blend of free time and organised experiences. Alternatively, focussing on locally based travel, Intrepid took adventure brand Gecko under its umbrella and launched their new 18 to 29’s Adventure brand, offering small group travel with a maximum of 16 travellers per tour.

18 30 travel

Operators know that the 18-30 something traveller is keen to travel responsibly and sustainably. G Adventures partners with Planeterra to combine social responsibility with cultural immersion. Intrepid delivers a donation to Friends International for every 18 to 29s trip booked and Contiki support the Treadright Foundation with other members of the TTC brand.

With so many demands on their day, 18-30s travellers have limited time to sift through the trip options open to them. Global Journeys, with its collection of 18- 30's trips from these top operators, can help young travellers find their desired trip online, with access to reviews and tools to help them compare trips for price and experiences across the brands.

The Golden Rules of Retirement Travel

By Stacey Lastoe

Image may contain Clothing Glove Person Footwear Shoe Adult Animal Canine Dog Mammal Pet Accessories and Glasses

This is part of a collection of stories celebrating the many shapes retirement travel can take. Read more here.

Bonni and Bob Gumport travel regularly in their retirement. Not beholden to one short vacation a year (they average seven big ones), their compounding experience has allowed them to develop a code of rules by which they abide— tips and tricks to use wherever they go. After one too many of the small rooms common in boutique hotels, for example, they’ve cut them out entirely. Also out of the question are walking tours within two days of arrival in a new destination, as they prefer to settle in. Their daughter Lauren describes them as “pros on retiree travel,” but they are not the only ones with advice to give.

There are former museum curators who have learned not to overbook themselves; solo travelers who always learn a little of the local language. Adherence to anyone’s rules will never ensure a vacation free of hiccups, where no flight is ever delayed , every tour is worth the hours put in, and every meal sublime . But learning from others may improve your chances of a good time—even when things inevitably go sideways. We’ve spoken to over 20 retired travelers to hear how their Golden Years have informed the way that they travel. Below, find some of their savviest secrets for better trips.

1. Take a ride on the hop-on, hop-off bus tour

If she’s traveling in a city that offers one of those double-decker hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tours, Denver -based Heidi Burtoni, 65, who goes on multiple trips per year, is definitely stepping aboard. Burtoni says it’s a great way to figure out the rest of her itinerary, get tips from other travelers and the tour guide, and get a feel for the new city. “It’s the first thing I do to get the lay of the land,” says Burtoni. Her previous career in sales means the frequent solo traveler will “talk to anybody,” so these tours also open the door for socializing and making connections.

Know what to skip—“whether that means avoiding tourist traps, the most sweltering hours at fairs, or not putting yourself in danger by flagging a taxi when it's unsafe," says Lynn Zelevansky.

2. Figure out what to avoid

For Paul and Lynn Zelevansky (77 and 76, respectively), travel is less about hitting all the top spots and more about learning where not to go, “whether that means avoiding tourist traps, the most sweltering hours at fairs, or not putting yourself in danger by flagging a taxi when it’s unsafe.” They visit the Venice Biennale in fall, now, rather than at the opening, to avoid the worst of the crushes—it also helps them more effectively skirt the city's infamous pickpockets (Lynn's wallet was stolen on a crowded vaporetto ferry in 2022).

3. BYOTP (Bring Your Own Toilet Paper)

“Toilet paper in Europe is very scratchy … not good for sensitive parts,” says Florida native Karen Butera, an avid pickleball player who often travels with the sport in mind. Whenever overseas, she always travels with her own toilet paper. Butera, 66, is taking her granddaughter to see Taylor Swift in Paris this summer, and, yes, she will be packing TP—creature comforts are even more crucial on the road than they are at home.

4. Don’t overschedule

Packed-to-the-brim itineraries used to be J. Patrice Marandel’s MO, but these days, the former chief curator at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is more keen on scheduling “plenty of time for the unexpected.” Gone are the nonstop days with planned breakfasts, lunches, and dinners; instead, Marandel, 79, leaves room for the possibility of something unexpected and “exciting.” It often pays off.

5. Pack light

Buffalo, New York-based Lisa LaLonde, 74, and her travel companion Antoinette Judelsohn, 70, whom she’s been traveling with for over a decade, are pros at packing light . The pals can manage for a month on very little, relying on the versatility of black leggings and black tops, says LaLonde. The trick? Develop a travel uniform, bring just a few versions, and wash undergarments as necessary, says Judelsohn. Big suitcases stuffed to the brim with a ton of different outfits are more of a hassle than a luxury. “They’re a pain in the neck if you’re getting on a train or off a train … or moving from one city to another,” says LaLonde.

Image may contain Person Sitting Adult Accessories Sunglasses Art Face Head Clothing Footwear Shoe and Drawing

“Anybody and their brother with an RV travels on Sunday,” warns Jenelle Jones.

6. Don't get (too) excited

Judelsohn, a former teacher who met LaLonde when they worked together at the same school in Buffalo, has another travel rule that’s served her well: Letting go of expectations. “I never get excited about a trip,” says Judelsohn. Instead, the savvy traveler lets the excitement emerge based on what's in front of her in the moment.

7. Avoid traveling on Sundays

RVer Jenelle Jones, 64, is against traveling on Sundays. As she puts it, “anybody and their brother with an RV travels on Sunday.” Long weekend RVers who have to get back for work on Monday use Sundays to head home, so retired Jones, 64, simply avoids the day altogether. It's also, according to her, the “biggest day to get in an RV wreck”— yet another reason to sit back and relax. You have nowhere you need to be, after all. Take advantage.

8. Learn a few words of the local language

Charlotte Simpson , whose blog Traveling Black Widow documents her travels (100 countries and counting so far), says her number one travel rule is to learn a few key phrases—hello, goodbye, please, thank you—in the dominant language of the places she visits. Simpson says her efforts are always well received. “I just find, inevitably, it sort of stuns people when I even just say good morning.” Simpson, who prefers not to reveal her age, says she gets a lot out of bridging the language gap with just a few words: “It just makes people so friendly and so happy that you took this moment to learn [their language].”

9. Travel slower

When you cram too much into a single trip, “the whole experience just kind of becomes a blur,” say Gillian Batt, 43, and Stephanie Myers, 51, whose blog Our Freedom Years documents their early retirement and subsequent travels. The couple, who hail from Ontario, Canada, say staying in one place for an extended period of time helps them avoid travel burnout, keep costs low, and enjoy the whole experience more. All that rushing around on limited PTO? Well behind them.

For RVers like Norm, keeping things flexible is key.

10. Go your own way

The pandemic crystallized things for Kim Kelly Stamp , 65, and her wife Liz Schick, 62, who left it all behind and decided to travel around the country in a red 21-foot teardrop trailer. They’ve since gotten really good at going with the flow. “We know where we’re going to stay along the way, but we hold that really loosely and give ourselves the opportunity to make something else happen,” explains Stamp. This approach led them to Laurel, Mississippi, where the HGTV show Hometown —of which Stamp and Schick are big fans of, is based. Instead of following a regimented schedule, they followed their passion when the road forked, literally.

11. Keep an open heart and mind

In spite of being seasoned travelers, John and Bev Martin, 60, who started the RetirementTravelers site to share their journey with others, admit they still need to remind themselves that they can’t control everything. “We have to be patient and receptive to the lessons the world is trying to teach,” says the couple. One that keeps coming up? “Retirement is not the time to stop dreaming about new and different routes in life.”

12. Do your research

The Gumports appreciate getting a taste of the local culture wherever they are traveling, and they’re not opposed to tours or experiences that deliver on this front. But Bonni has a few words of advice: “If you’re looking at purchasing something that uses words such as ‘bespoke, artisanal, farm-to-table’ and more fluffy adjectives, make sure these experiences are as authentic as they sound.” Read reviews thoroughly and take the time to research before you buy, advises Bonni. It's fun to be spontaneous, but it's easy to be misled by clever marketing and buzzwords.

13. It’s a marathon—not a sprint

It wasn’t long before Brenda Huyhn adopted—and adapted— a popular van-lifer rule: Don’t travel more than 3 hours, get in by 3 p.m., and stay at least 3 nights. Huyhn, who at 47 retired earlier than many, is adamant about not trying to do too much in one day to avoid burnout. She and her husband take their time, prioritizing “quality over quantity” with their stops and stays. It makes the entire experience all the richer.

14. You can always head home

Diana Petterson is on track to hit the 100-country mark just in time for her 70th birthday in 2026. But as much as the Black solo traveler loves seeing the world, she’s not afraid to ditch a trip if something isn’t working out. “Wherever I am in the world, if for whatever reason I am uncomfortable, or I don't feel well … I’m going to plop down that credit card , and get home.”

15. Start the day early to avoid the crowds

Artist Simma Liebman, 76, enjoys going to museums while visiting new cities and places. But since the retiree is immunocompromised, she plans these outings a little differently. Now Liebman hits the museums “as early in the day as possible” and masks up while taking in the art "unless there are very few people inside.” Whatever your motivation, rising early is something you can be sure the hordes of 20-something backpackers won't be doing. Beat them to all the best spots.

“I like a very good hotel, but not necessarily the best,” says Betty. Focus on getting the right location.

16. Base yourself strategically

Betty, 80, an art collector who declined to share her last name, has found that mid-sized hotels (meaning about 200 rooms) in central locations, with just enough of the services she wants and needs, do the job. “I like a very good hotel, but not necessarily the best,” says Betty. As long as you have the basics covered, it's really about location, location, location.

17. Don’t wait for tomorrow

Instead of putting off travel for a later date, Chicago -based Ruthie Maldonado-Delwiche advises those interested in exploring the world to get out there and “do it now.” Because “tomorrow isn’t promised,” Maldonado-Delwiche, who’s been traveling since she retired in 2017, says. Don't wait if there’s something you want to do or a place you want to visit.

Former psychiatrist Ann Heaslett, 60, who aims to run the six major world marathons in her retirement, feels exactly the same way. “There’s no time like the present.”

California has an annual impact of $8.8 billion, and rounding out the top three is Texas at $6.9 billion.

<p>Even on a more local level, the RV industry is a force to be reckoned with. In Colorado, for instance, it has a $1.4 billion annual economic impact. That materializes in a variety of ways. <p>Although most RVs bought are still towable, Class B motorized RV sales have surged. Many travelers consider the Class B models to be easier to drive and overall more convenient, especially in a pandemic era. Younger, first-time buyers are reportedly behind the surge with their embrace of a more “van life” approach to RVing. </p>

27. Interest in Motorized RVs is Surging

Although most RVs bought are still towable, Class B motorized RV sales have surged. Many travelers consider the Class B models to be easier to drive and overall more convenient, especially in a pandemic era. Younger, first-time buyers are reportedly behind the surge with their embrace of a more “van life” approach to RVing.

<p>According to the KOA report, 52% of new RVers report wanting to upgrade their rig. Many may have started out with lower-cost models as a way to “test the waters.” Many RVers report <a href="https://blog.cheapism.com/38-things-new-rv-owners-wished-theyd-known-buying-rv/">wishing they had known more before buying their first RV</a>.</p>

<p>There was a surge in new campers in 2020, and it represents a more diverse group than ever before. According to KOA, nearly 60% of new campers are under 40, with three-fourths of all new camping households having children. Six in 10 are from nonwhite groups, and one in four is black.</p>

<p>Motorhomes are distinguished by being self-propelled — they are motor vehicles outfitted with living space. Depending on the class, that living space could range from fairly spartan to <a href="https://blog.cheapism.com/luxury-recreational-vehicles/">ultra-luxurious</a>. </p>

32. Many People Are Also Opting to Rent RVs

According to RVshare’s Travel Trends Report, of all those who rented in 2020, nearly 80% were new to the rental platform. Another RV rental company saw a surge of 1,500% from its lowest booking day to the highest during the pandemic. According to market research company Mordor Intelligence , the RV rental industry was valued at $642 million in 2021, but growth from last year to 2029 is expected to reach 8%.

<p>Average RV prices can range from $5,000 to more than $140,000 new, the RVIA says. Some price tags even stretch into the millions of dollars, although this isn’t average. There are four types of motorhomes, including Class A, Class B, Class C, and the lesser-known and super fancy Super C. Towable RVs include conventional travel trailers, toy haulers (designed for transporting ATVs, motorcycles, and the like), travel trailers with expandable ends, folding or pop-up trailers, and fifth wheels. Then there are park model RVs and, becoming more common, towable tiny homes often built by their owners. You also can’t forget about truck top campers.</p>

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US after 2024 and what is its path? What to know

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

Here's what we know about the next total solar eclipse to cross over the U.S.

Eclipse playlist: Fans return to Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' ahead of total solar eclipse

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Pets and the eclipse: Will my pets be safe during the April 2024 solar eclipse? What experts say.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024

United states map showing the path of the 2024 solar eclipse and specific regions of what the eclipse duration will be.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

Eclipse map of totality

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.

18-30's Travel Tours & Travel Guide

18-30's Travel Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Young adult travelers are often -- though certainly not always -- on the lookout for budget trips. Many seek active, outdoorsy adventures such as hiking or cycling tours , trekking and camping expeditions, backpacking trips, off-the-beaten-path locations, and a variety of learning tours, such as cooking classes in  Turkey  or scuba lessons in the South Pacific.

All these options and more are offered by today's tour operators. And if you want to put together a custom itinerary for yourself and your friends, just ask -- many operators will be happy to do that, too.

Take the Planning Out

The 18-30 group is one of the busiest by far; busy with school, work, kids, and life in general. Pre-planned trips save you time by having a set itinerary so you don't have something else on your plate. You can search by the number of days you have available, where you want to go, or what type of trip you want to go on. You can guarantee that you will see plenty of wildlife and exotic locations.

Productive Itineraries

If this is one of your only vacations of the year, you’ll want to see as much as you can. These trips have multiple activities everyday to make sure you see the most of each area visited. Choose activities based on your interests. Short on time? There are trips you can do in less than a week for a quick vacation. Whether you have a week or a month, your trip will be unforgettable.

Budget Trips

These trips are catered to the young traveler's budget. Traveling alone can be very expensive, and is not as affordable if you are in or just out of college. No need to worry about booking expensive taxis or hotels for your vacation. Your trip will put together the most affordable lodging and transportation for you to get the most out of your money.

Exploring New Territories

More and more young people are venturing out of their comfort zones and going to less well known countries. The convenience of a pre-planned group trip means you don't have to worry about getting from A to B and deal with transportation. You can focus all your energy on taking breathtaking pictures as you see foreign lands.
