The India vs Australia Test series is scheduled to start on 06 April.

As the Paris Olympics 2024 are fast approaching, the Indian men’s hockey team is preparing for a Hockey Test series 2024 of warm-up matches from April 6 to April 13 in Australia. Hockey India’s tour to Australia in 2024 will feature India, currently ranked world no. 5, facing Australia in a five-match test series. The tour will conclude on April 13th.

The series in Australia will be crucial for preparation, as they will take on the defending Commonwealth Games Champion, Australia, in Perth, from April 6 to April 13, 2024.

This will be team India’s first competition since their participation in the Men’s FIH Pro League 2023-24 Indian leg. The Men in Blue currently stand third in the Pro League standings. The Indian team won two matches against Ireland and one match against Spain, lost one match to Australia, and four matches ended in a draw. Their final match was a high-scoring victory (4-0) against Ireland.

Harmanpreet Singh will lead a 27-member Indian team representing the country on the tour to Australia. Hardik, who was awarded the FIH Player of the Year in 2023, has been named the deputy captain once again.

Araijeet Singh Hundal and Boby Singh Dhami have been included in the team, thanks to their outstanding performances at the Men’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup 2023.

Indian men’s hockey team secured a spot for the Paris Olympics 2024 by winning a gold medal at the Asian Games in 2022. In the previous Olympics in Tokyo, the Indian team ended a 41-year medal drought by defeating Germany 5-4 to win the bronze medal.

Indian hockey team loses 5-1 to Australia in series opener

Gurjant Singh scored the only goal for the Indian men’s hockey team. The second India vs Australia Test match will be played on Sunday.

The Indian men’s hockey team lost 5-1 to hosts Australia in the first game of the five-match series in Perth on Saturday.

Tim Brand (3'), Tom Wickham (20', 38’), Joel Rintala (37’) and Flynn Ogilvie (57') scored the goals for the home team while Gurjant Singh (47’) netted for the visitors.

The first quarter began with the two Tokyo Olympic medallists looking for an early goal. Australia, one place below India in the hockey rankings at world No. 5, looked much better in possession and edged ahead thanks to Brand’s strike.

The Kookaburras earned back-to-back penalty corners in the next few minutes but Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh made some good saves to keep the score 1-0. India also earned a penalty corner in the ninth minute but failed to capitalise.

The second quarter was played at a similar tempo with Australia transitioning better between attack and defence.

Manpreet Singh , captain of the bronze medal-winning Indian team at the Tokyo Olympics, earned a penalty corner for India in the 18th minute but the chance went begging following a missed trap.

Australia continued to make frequent circle penetrations and doubled their lead through Tom Wickham’s field goal in the 20th minute. The initial attempt by Australian captain Aran Zalewski was blocked by India but Wickham converted from the rebound.

Field goals from Tom Wickham, his second of the day, and Joel Rintala saw India trail 4-0 in the third quarter.

An early penalty corner for Australia in the final quarter threatened more damage but a block, followed by a quickly taken free-hit by India gave the visitors their first goal of the match through Gurjant Singh in the 47th minute.

However, Australia restored their four-goal lead from a penalty corner through Flynn Ogilvie 10 minutes later.

The Indian men’s hockey team will face Australia for the second match at the same venue on Sunday. The five-match series, part of India’s Paris 2024 Olympics preparations, concludes on April 13.
