Lions and elephants and cheetahs, oh my! For nature lovers, an African safari is the ultimate immersive getaway. Safaris offer a combination of wildlife encounters and luxurious lodges, incredible thrills and peaceful, unplugged wilderness.

Although traveling to the African bush is a great experience any time of year, there are definitely more advantageous times for wildlife spotting. For example, in East Africa, you may want to time a trip to coincide with the great wildebeest and zebra migration. In Southern Africa, a trip at the same time most babies are born offers some incredibly special moments watching newborns with their mamas.

I've visited Africa more than a dozen times and have gone on safaris in six different countries, visiting every season.

While I've seen incredible wildlife — including lion cubs on a December trip to Botswana and spectacular herds of elephants in Zimbabwe on a May safari — in the nonhigh seasons, I've also dealt with some pretty extreme weather as well. For instance, I have experienced intense rain storms in November and freezing temperatures in June.

Sometimes the best time to take a safari is when you have flexibility in your schedule or can get the best rates. However, if you want to plan around the absolute best time to spot wildlife, read below to find out when to go.

What months are best to go on an African safari?

The African continent is massive, comprising 54 unique nations and nearly 2,000 languages. Most safaris take place in two main savanna regions of the African continent: Southern and East Africa. The Southern Africa region includes South Africa , Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. East Africa contains the safari destinations of Kenya , Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.

Most of these destinations have one thing in common: They're located in the Southern Hemisphere. Even the ones that straddle the equator, such as Uganda, follow the Southern Hemisphere's weather patterns.

This means the seasons on safari will be the opposite of what you're most likely used to at home. Summer is December through February, winter is June through August, spring is September to November and autumn is March through May.

The Southern Hemisphere's winter and early spring — roughly June through October — is usually considered safari high season because it's the driest time of year. Wildlife gathers around watering holes when water is scarce elsewhere, Mark Nolting of Africa Adventure Company says; this makes it easier to see many species in one location.

In East Africa, the best time to go on an African safari is during the great migration, when thousands of antelope and zebra move in massive herds to find water. That season is roughly December to March and then again from June to mid-November.

There are some exceptions to this rule though.

In Botswana seeing wildlife from a mokoro, a type of dugout canoe, is a popular activity. That's why it's necessary to visit when there's water in the passageways. The dry season provides the same viewing opportunities as above, so you should be able to spot game anytime.

The private reserves in South Africa also defy seasonality; game is so dense in areas, such as the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, that you should be able to spot wildlife no matter the month or season.

When is the best weather for a safari?

The dry weather of the winter season, roughly June through September, is often considered the best weather for a safari. Note: It can be quite cold after the sun sets, so bring a hat, fleece and gloves to keep warm during early morning game drives (though most safari lodges will provide blankets and hot beverages, too).

The "green season," as the rainier summer months are often called, is usually also the hottest time of year. At this time, you'll encounter the most insects, including mosquitos, in the bush.

Shoulder season — the times between the high season and green season, March to May and October to December — usually offers moderate temperatures and just an occasional storm. This time can be a great option for travelers since this is when you can get better pricing while still enjoying prime wildlife viewing.

Is there one good time to go for seeing wildlife?

We're here to tell you that no matter what time of the year you go to Africa, you are guaranteed to see wildlife. The density and ease of spotting may change with the months and seasons, and some species will be easier to spot at certain times of year than others. However, there will always be free-roaming animals large and small if you visit the African bush.

That said, some times have a bit more to offer than others in terms of wildlife viewing.

The easiest time to spot wildlife — meaning you'll spend less time searching during your morning and afternoon game drive and more time watching the animals — is during the dry season. This coincides with the Southern Hemisphere's winter months, June through September, and usually reaches into October. During this period animals will be searching for water and will often congregate in the same location around a water hole or stream.

Spring, roughly October through December, is another prime time to visit. This is when many animals have babies, and the opportunity to see these newborns in the wild is truly a special treat. It's also when the foliage bursts into bloom and migratory avian life return to their leafy homes.

Summer brings denser foliage and a more vivid landscape, and for twitchers (birders, as they're known on safari), visiting this time of year offers big rewards. It's harder to spot wildlife with a large amount of dense growth, though, so you may need to spend another day or two on safari to tick off all the wildlife you're hoping to see.

The Best Time to Go on Safari

The best time for an African safari is typically from July through October, when the animals are easy to find and in substantial numbers. Deciding when to go on safari depends on what country you would like to visit and when you can plan your trip. Seasons differ in East and Southern Africa so you can plan an excellent safari for almost every month of the year if you are flexible about where you want to go to.

Below you'll find a country-specific guide for the absolute best time to plan a safari. A month-by-month guide for the best country to visit for a safari is also included. The last part of this article is for if you're looking for animal-specific safaris, like a gorilla or a chimpanzee safari.

The best time to go on safari in Kenya and experience a vast density and diversity of wildlife is when the annual migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra, and gnu descend on the Mara plains with predators close behind. The best time to see this wildlife spectacle is from July to October. Other parks in Kenya are also excellent and the best time to visit these would be during the dry seasons —January through March and July through October.

With the scarcity of water during the dry seasons, the animals tend to gather in more concentrated numbers around permanent waterholes, rivers, and lakes, so they are easier to find. The vegetation is also less lush which means that viewing animals from a distance is easier.

If you want to see the Great Migration unfold, head to Tanzania's northern parks : the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The best time to witness the migration is probably February through March when the wildebeest and zebra have their young. Not only can you enjoy seeing baby animals, but the predators are at the highest number too. Because the herds also concentrate in the south of the Serengeti, it's easy to plan your wildlife viewing in that area and find a safari company that offers lodging there.

June to November is Tanzania's dry season and is the best time to visit all the parks (and you can always hop over to Kenya's Masai Mara to witness the Great Migration during this time). Tanzania's Southern Parks are perfect to visit during this time since the animals tend to congregate around permanent water and it isn't so hot and humid.

All of Tanzania's parks suffer from the rains which generally fall from March to May in the North, and from November to May in the South and West. Roads get washed out and given the sheer size of Tanzania's parks, the animals tend to spread out, and this makes wildlife viewing less satisfying (if you're looking for sheer numbers of animals).

December through March can get quite hot and humid, especially in Western and Southern Tanzania which makes it a little uncomfortable to spend a lot of time in the bush.

Uganda has some magnificent National Parks which are best visited from December through March or June through September when it is predominantly dry. Most people who choose Uganda as a safari destination go to see the Mountain Gorillas . Although rain is likely all year round, the rainy seasons make the trek up to the gorillas particularly tricky, so avoid the months of March and April or October and November.

The best time to enjoy Zambia's wildlife is from September through mid-November which is the end of the dry season. Elephants abound and large herds of buffalo, impala, zebra, and others congregate in the Lower Zambezi Valley. April to September is also a good time to go, but beyond these months many parks in Zambia all but shut down due to impassable roads. In November, there's a smaller version of the Great Migration where 30,000 wildebeest gather in Zambia's Liuwa Plain National Park, that's not witnessed by many, but worth trying to plan a trip around.

July to October is the best time to go to Zimbabwe's excellent wildlife parks, especially Hwange, the largest game reserve in the country. Whitewater rafting on the Zambezi is best from August to December when the water is low, and the rapids are fast.

The Victoria Falls are at their most impressive in March and April after the rainy season. You may have difficulty seeing all of the falls due to massive amounts of spray it can be quite torrential.

June through September is the best time to go on safari in Botswana . There is little chance of rain, and the weather is still lovely and warm during the day. Huge herds congregate around the Okavango Delta during this time, making a trip in a mokoro (traditional canoe) extremely rewarding.

Botswana is one of Africa's most expensive safari destinations because many of the parks are inaccessible by road and you have to charter a small plane to get there. If you have your heart set on Botswana's excellent parks, but can't quite afford them, check out some of the shoulder season deals in April, May, and October.

Etosha National Park is Namibia's prime safari destination and the best time to visit is from May to September. This is Namibia's dry season (despite being mostly desert , there are still seasons in Namibia!) and animals congregate around the water holes making viewing easier.

Many birders come to Namibia, and the best time to visit is during the summer months from December to March, but be prepared for some scorching and humid weather.

South Africa

The prime safari areas in South Africa around Kruger National Park are best visited from June through September when the weather is cooler and dry. But South Africa's wildlife parks have better infrastructure than most parks in Africa, so rains don't necessarily mean the roads will be washed out. There are also many excellent game parks in South Africa's Eastern Cape region which experience less rain during the winter months than in the north of the country.

When to go on a safari sometimes depends on when you can take a vacation. If you're looking for the best safari experience and don't mind what country you go to, this is a useful guide for you. It's month by month account of the best animal viewing opportunities in Africa.

• January is prime safari time in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The weather is usually dry, and the animals will congregate in dense numbers around permanent water supplies. The migrating wildebeest, zebra, and gnu can be found in Tanzania's northern parks during this time of year particularly in the southern Ndutu and Salei plains.
• February is one of the best months to go on safari in Tanzania's northern parks because thousands of wildebeest are usually born around this time. Most of the wildebeest give birth within the same three week period. If you like baby animals , Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are all perfect this time of year. Southern Tanzania can get quite hot and humid this time of year, so stick to the northern parks if you think the weather will bother you.
• March: East Africa is still the place to be in early March if you're looking for the best safari experience in Africa. Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are still in their dry season, and the density and diversity of animals can't be matched elsewhere this month. If you're visiting Uganda and want to see the gorillas, you should avoid March.
• April is a good month for those looking for discounted safaris because the rains usually start in East Africa and are on their way out in Southern Africa. Rains bring plentiful water, and the animals tend to disperse making them harder to find while on safari. Vegetation begins to get very lush which can obstruct your views of the animals. And perhaps most importantly, the dirt roads in national parks can get washed out and become impassable. You can still enjoy an excellent safari in Tanzania without the crowds, especially in the northern parks. Southern Africa is coming into its own in April with cooler, drier weather. Botswana and Namibia are good bets for April. The Victoria Falls (Zambia/Zimbabwe) are at their most spectacular in April with the start of the heavy rains. They are easily combined with a visit to any Southern African safari destination.
• In May , the best country to go on safari is probably Zambia. Zambia offers a genuinely wild African safari (and the best walking safaris), and there aren't too many months when the parks can operate at full tilt, so you have to take advantage of it when you can. The rest of Southern Africa is good as well though as the dry season is well on its way. If you have your heart set on an East African safari, May isn't the best time to go, but you'll still see a lot of animals, especially in Tanzania. Make sure the camps and lodges you wish to go to are open. You should be able to get some excellent discounts.
• June: Southern Africa is heading into its best safari period by June. South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia enjoy their high season this time of year. Be prepared for some chilly nights and bring a jacket for the early morning drives.
• July - September: Take your pick of destination from July to September. Every major safari destination is primed for business. Kenya's Masai Mara lays out the green carpet for millions of migrating wildebeest. This is the time for those spectacular river crossings with the crocodiles lying in wait for feeble wildebeest to stumble into their watering jaws. Southern African parks are dry and packed with diversity which you can enjoy from your lodge bar overlooking a waterhole. Since this is also when the northern hemisphere takes their summer vacation, parks can get crowded and booked up well in advance. If you're looking for a budget safari, try a different season.
• October: Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Tanzania are the best places for a safari in October. The small rainy season has usually not arrived yet and the months of dry weather makes game viewing very rewarding.
• November: While Southern Africa begins its rainy season with significant heat and humidity, Zambia is still a good destination for a safari because of a unique wildlife event that takes place in Liuwa Plain National Park. A smaller version of the great East African migration takes place, and for safari aficionados, this can be very exciting to witness. Unfortunately, the rest of Zambia's parks during this time aren't at their peak, but game viewing is still fair. Northern Tanzania is the best place to go on safari in November, as the migrating herds make their way back to the Serengeti plains. If you're a birder, Botswana's Okavango Delta begins to fill up with migrating birds this month, starting their breeding season (which lasts until March).
• December: East Africa reigns once again as the best safari destination if you'd like to spend Christmas in the bush. Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda enjoy some dry weather and excellent game viewing.

Best Times to See Specific Animals

• Gorillas are actually a year-round attraction since their habitat has been reduced so significantly, they couldn't roam far even if they wanted to. However, tracking gorillas is hard at the best of times, and during the rainy season, the steep paths and mud can make it almost impossible to manage. Very heavy rain also makes it more difficult to take good photos, and since you only have an hour with the gorillas, it would be a shame not to get a good snapshot or two. The main rainy seasons in Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC are from March to April and October to November.
• Chimpanzee safaris can be found in Western Tanzania and Uganda. Like gorilla safaris, they can take place year-round but the rainy season makes walking in the forests a little tougher, and the photo opportunities aren't as good as in the dry season (July through October and December). However, the rain also means the chimpanzees don't have to roam too far to find water, and they are easier to locate (February-June, November-mid December).
• Whales: South Africa offers some of the world's best whale watching especially if you don't fancy going out on a boat, but would like to see them from the shore. The best time to view whales is from June to November when the Cape coast comes alive with hundreds of southern-right whales. You can also see humpbacks, Bryde's whales, and orcas.
• Birds: The best time to see birds in Southern Africa is between November and March. South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi are all excellent destinations for birders, and many birding safaris are available. In East Africa, the best time to go birding is January through March. Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Ethiopia are all popular birding destinations. West Africa also offers a huge and exciting variety of birds, the best time to visit Cameroon, the Gambia, and other destinations are during the European winter from November to March.

When’s the best time to go on safari in Africa?

An African safari is the ultimate bucket list trip, so you want to make sure you go at the right time.

The journey will take you across vast, ever-changing landscapes and give you an up-close look at some of the world’s most beautiful animals in their natural environment. You’ll probably want to pack your bags as soon as you start imagining the awesome journey, but a little planning ahead of time can make your trip that little bit more magical.

When is the best time for a safari in Africa?

The best time to go on safari is between June and October, during the dry season. This is a cooler time of the year and you are more likely to see animals, who are searching for water sources. During these months, you can also catch the iconic Masai Mara migration.

Here is a breakdown of some of the best countries to visit, when to go, and the perfect trips for you.

Safaris from January to February

The Great Migration of wildebeests from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara is awe-inspiring, to say the least. The precise timing of it is dependent upon rainfall patterns each year, meaning you can see different aspects of it at different times: the mass birthing of calves between January and March in the southern Serengeti, and river crossings between July and August.

In addition to wildebeests, safari-goers will also have the chance to spot Africa’s most famous predator, lions. Prides of lions will follow the herds for the prime hunting opportunity they present. Cheetahs, wild dogs and hyenas also make appearances as they try to take down vulnerable members of the herd. If you’re lucky, you might even see a wildebeest or zebra giving birth.

Have an open mind! A lot of travelers have this unrealistic expectation of seeing river crossings with thousands and thousands of wildebeest (and the odd crocodile) battling it out in the ultimate scene from National Geographic! The migration is a natural phenomenon and no year is the same as the last. That being said, it is magical!

South Africa is pretty much your one stop shop for everything a good African holiday is made of. It’s also incredibly good value. Consider heading there in March and April for pleasant weather and fewer crowds. These two summer months fall in the country’s wet season, but the rains really do open the door to some of the best wildlife-spotting opportunities.

Kruger National Park, the region’s most famous National Park, not only has the big five (and more!), but is also close to the vibrant, underrated city of Johannesburg.

But any time is a good time to visit South Africa. Cape Town offers food, wine, shopping, dreamy views, and activities for all ages. Just outside it lies the popular wine region, located on the Western Cape. You simply can’t go wrong!

The park’s sweeping mountains and deep valleys, the result of erosive activity, are covered in the deep green of alpine forests. The wildlife viewing opportunities in the desert-filled country of Namibia might surprise (and delight) you. Many different African animals have adapted to live in the harsh-but-beautiful Namib, a coastal desert. Herds of elephants traverse the desert, as do different types of antelope, zebra and even lions. Outside the desert, March can be humid and rainy, but April tends to be drier. The rains that fall early in the year make much of the country verdant in April.

Safaris from May to June

May and June are winter months in Madagascar, but the island’s proximity to the equator means pleasant temperatures during the coolest months of the year. You’ll also see particularly lush landscapes in May and June, and these two months are considered part of the low season; there won’t be throngs of tourists.

In Zimbabwe, May is a transitional month with elements of both wet and dry seasons. The recent rains leave the land looking lush and green, but as the month progresses the weather becomes drier and the nighttime temperatures begin to drop. Come June, the days are warm and pleasant, while the nights are chilly. This time of year is the peak season for safaris. The drier weather draws animals to the country’s rivers and watering holes. Keep a lookout for lions, leopards, rhinos, zebras, elephants and more.

Safaris from July to August

July and August are right in the midst of Rwanda’s dry season (which takes place from June through to September). These two months are very popular for booking gorilla trekking adventures because of the clear skies and sunny conditions. The gorillas live in Rwanda’s rainforests, mainly within the bounds of Volcanoes National Park. Here, you can also see chimpanzees and colobus monkeys living among the trees. Keep in mind that gorilla habitat is, by default, very wet and you can’t avoid rain completely. However, after heavy rain, the skies often open up to bright sunshine.

The Okavango Delta, Moremi and Chobe are among Botswana’s most popular parks and animal-spotting destinations. The best time to visit them is from May to September, during the dry season and winter, which results in more moderate temperatures.

There is also less vegetation during these months, so animals tend to concentrate around waterholes and rivers, making wildlife easier to spot. The Okavango Delta is also in full flood then. The skies are clear, rain is rare and there are fewer mosquitoes. It does get cold at night and in the mornings, so packing warm winter clothing during June, July and August for the cold morning game drives is advisable.

Safaris from September to October

There is some light rainfall in September and October, but these two months are still part of the dry season in Ghana. You won’t have to worry about heavy rains causing flooding or travel delays. Birdwatchers will love taking a canopy tour through Kakum National Park – you can spot guinea fowl, African grey parrots and many other types of birds flitting through the trees. The national park is also home to forest elephants, civets, leopards, pangolins, a variety of monkeys and more.

Other wildlife hotspots include the Ankasa Rain Forest, the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary and Mole National Park.

These months are part of the dry season and the weather is also cooler. During these months, you can also catch the iconic Masai Mara migration (guide here ). September heralds the beginning of springtime in Eswatini, a fairly dry time of year. Hlane Royal National Park and Mkhaya Game Reserve are ideal destinations for safari-goers who want to get close to animals like elephants, rhinos, buffalo, leopards and lions. In addition to these big mammals, Eswatini is also home to zebras, a variety of antelope, giraffes, hundreds of bird species and more.

November and December are the first two months of the warm and dry season in Ivory Coast. The temperate weather and minimal rainfall are ideal for travelers. This low season also takes place in March and April and the pay-off is well worth it. Why? She adds that “it’s unlikely to rain all day. You’ll get a downpour at some stage each day, or even light rain on and off, but there are plenty of blue sky days as well.”

A note on the rainy season: don’t dismiss it!

Generally distinguished as the low season in Africa, the ‘green season’ is characterized by frequent rains. It’s a great option for travelers who can live with a bit of rain, and a bit more of a challenge when it comes to animal spotting. The vegetation is thick, and the grass high making wildlife harder to spot, and water is plenty so you don’t get a lot of animals congregating around waterholes.

What you do get is incredible, lush, green landscapes. Most animals give birth at the beginning of the rainy season so you will see plenty of newborns. It’s also a bird lover’s paradise with flowers in bloom and many migratory birds arriving back in the area from as far as Asia or Europe. The Serengeti and Masai Mara may be home to the world’s largest annual migration but green season Botswana hosts part of the longest recorded migration! Thousands of Burchell’s zebras cover more than 500km in a straight line across Namibia and Botswana.

It really is a great option for those second-time visitors to Africa who have been there, done that, seen the Big 5 and want to experience something ‘different’. Some destinations like Botswana in particular look like an entirely different place from one season to the other and it’s pretty amazing to see both ends of the spectrum, and you can get some incredible savings for traveling at this time of year. The most important part of that equation is WHEN TO GO ON SAFARI. The time of year you select will influence your wildlife encounters, the weather and ultimately, whether your safari meets your expectations. The month-by-month analysis below is a broad description of a typical safari year in Africa, but of course, ongoing seasonal variations and natural cycles require the in-depth and current knowledge of our safari experts. JANUARY - predators, chimps & gorillas

January is one of the secret months for safari ecstasy – excellent action combined with low tourist volumes. This is the start of the calving season throughout Africa, and the predators are cashing in on easy meals. It's also the best time to trek for chimps and gorillas and search for rare, endemic birds. Along the coast, water clarity is good for snorkelling and diving

FEBRUARY - babies, primates & beaches

February sees fantastic wildlife action and low tourist volumes if you know where to go. The calving season throughout Africa is in full swing, and the predators are easily picking off young animals. It's also an excellent time for gorilla and chimp trekking and searching for rare and endemic birds. Along the coast, the skies are clear and the days hot - perfect for snorkelling, diving and lazing on white-sand beaches. Expect lower lodge prices and no crowds

MARCH - no crowds and lower prices

March enjoys favourable weather in southern Africa, where the summer heat has dissipated. Wedged between the Christmas festive season and Easter, this is a period when fewer people travel - resulting in lower lodge prices and no crowds. There are many antelope calves in March - and the predators are cashing in. Coastal beaches and offshore islands still offer good beach weather during March, but for late March travel, your safest bet is Southern Africa, due to the imminent arrival of the East African 'long rains' season

APRIL - cooler weather & lower prices

April heralds cooler weather in Southern Africa as it transitions into the dry winter, while the 'long rains' season has commenced in East Africa. Expect lower lodge prices and no crowds, although watch out for Easter and other public holidays in South Africa, which can attract more local visitors

MAY - start of the southern dry season

May announces the start of the dry season in Southern Africa, while the 'long rains' season has settled into East Africa. Seasonal camps and walking safaris open for business in Southern Africa as the dry weather settles in. Expect lower lodge prices and no crowds in both regions

JUNE - start of the prime wildlife season

June is the start of the best wildlife-viewing season in Africa. It's early winter in Southern Africa - heralding pleasant dry weather and good visibility as grass whithers and leaves drop. East Africa has emerged from the long rains, meaning drier weather and ongoing moderate temperatures. Tourist numbers and lodge prices have not yet increased to peak season amounts - this is a good time to travel!

JULY - excellent wildlife encounters

The prime safari season has arrived, and you can expect spectacular wildlife encounters throughout Africa. There is very little rain expected (the dry season prevails) and temperatures are moderate - perfect safari weather. Tourist numbers and lodge prices are higher between July and September than at other times of the year

AUGUST - Africa's most popular month

A Month-by-month Guide – Best time to visit Africa

In the southeast of the Serengeti, the migrating herds give birth in January, making it a busy yet exciting time to visit. You can take advantage of over 450 different species of birds in the Caprivi Strip of Namibia. In Swakopmund, you might also observe thousands of flamingos congregating on lagoons. January in Zanzibar is ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling due to the clear, quiet waters.

Visiting Africa in February

Victoria Falls is at full force, with water crashing over the edge and into the gorge below, despite the fact that it is the rainy season in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Migratory birds are in plenty across the rest of Zambia right now. Meanwhile, this is a great time to visit Uganda and embark on a safari in search of chimpanzees and mountain gorillas.

Visiting Africa in March

Wet weather can make travel difficult in many parts of Africa during the month of March. Precipitation is expected soon in Tanzania, and the humidity levels are rising. It’s still a great time to see wildlife, as migratory birds arrive by the millions, and the camps are calm and have great deals.

Visiting Africa in April

Male antelope in Botswana and Malawi are displaying their dominance during the breeding season by strutting and butting heads with one another. The best time to see chimpanzees in Rwanda is in the late summer and early fall, when fruit is ripe and the primates descend to the lower branches to feed. Clear, calm water and excellent visibility make this a perfect time for scuba diving in Mozambique.

Visiting Africa in May

The dry season in Southern Africa begins in May. Grass is drying up, so herds are moving from pastures to wetland areas, making this a great time to visit. This makes their movements and the locations of the predators they attract more predictable. But the busiest times and highest prices are still a ways off. The weather in Mozambique is perfect for sightseeing right now, and the same goes for Egypt and Morocco.

Visiting Africa in June

It’s the middle of winter in Southern Africa, so the days will be warm and the nights will be cool. Game becomes more visible as the foliage dries up and water holes decrease in size in Botswana and Uganda. Meanwhile, the pumped waterholes of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe and the Niassa Game Reserve in northern Mozambique attract a wide variety of animals that are perfect subjects for wildlife photographers.

Visiting Africa in July

As humpback whales make their annual migration along the coast, game in the game reserves congregates near waterholes, making for excellent whale and game watching. Elephants begin to congregate in Tarangire, Tanzania, and cruising is available on the Lower Zambezi in Zambia, while the Great Migration groups are typically found in the northern Serengeti as they head into Kenya.

Visiting Africa in August

Large herds of wildebeest and zebra are converging on the Masai Mara in Kenya as the Great Migration nears its peak. If you’re looking to combine a walking safari with a trip to Victoria Falls, look no further than Zambia. Lake Malawi, where the water is calm and the weather is warm, is another great destination right now.

Visiting Africa in September

Tarangire, in Tanzania, is known for its large annual elephant gatherings. Northern parks tend to be more crowded than their southern counterparts. Low humidity and comfortable temps make this a fantastic time to explore Namibia. Thousands of carmine bee-eaters migrate to Zambia’s riverbanks to nest, and Mozambique is a top destination for scuba divers and snorkelers.

Visiting Africa in October

The eland, the largest antelope in the world, often congregates in the hundreds for the breeding season in Malawi’s Nyika National Park. The end of the dry season is prime time for seeing animals in Mozambique. The fossa, a predatory creature like a cat, can be seen in the western deciduous woods of Madagascar at this time of year.

Visiting Africa in November

Since nightly rains reduce tourist numbers, now is an excellent time to take advantage of Tanzania’s off-season rates. From Kenya, migrating herds begin their journey south, and river crossings are common sights in the northern Serengeti. Despite the presence of both native and transient bird species, this is a peaceful time to go birdwatching in Zimbabwe’s parks.

Visiting Africa in December

Plan ahead to assure availability in Tanzania and South Africa throughout the holiday season. Short rains and the potential to witness baby animals and migratory bird species make December a wonderful time to visit Kenya. Crocodile eggs begin to hatch in Malawi, and new moms carry their babies in their mouths to the riverbank.

Best time to Visit Botswana

The dry months of June through October in Botswana are prime time for seeing wildlife. Temperatures in October can reach 40 degrees Celsius during the day, but can fall to below 10 degrees Celsius at night. April and May are also good times to go on safari in Botswana, however you should be prepared for some rain.

• Best time to visit : June to October
• Watch out : Nights can be cold and chilly during the peak season, especially in the drier areas

Best time to Visit Kenya

The months of June through October and the second half of December through March are ideal for visiting Kenya. In general, the country receives the heaviest deluge of precipitation between April and June, with lighter downpours in November and December. However, you can visit Kenya at any time of year because different regions of the country are accessible at different times.

• Watch out:  Expect chilly weather conditions in higher altitudes

Best time to Visit Malawi

Summer, winter, and the rainy season each have their own unique climate in Malawi. Malawi has moderate temperatures from May to July, but hot weather in August and September. From the end of September through the beginning of April, Malawi’s roads are in bad condition due to heavy rainfall. With mild temperatures year-round, the best time to visit Malawi is from May through August or September.

Best time to Visit Mauritius

The climate in Mauritius is consistently warm and sunny throughout the year. Vacations on Mauritius’ beaches can be enjoyed at any time of the year, however January and February are more likely to see severe weather. Due to its position in the southern hemisphere, the country enjoys dry, relatively humidity-free weather from May through November.

• Best time to visit: September to January
• Watch out: The summer months typically get heavy rainfall with occasional thunderstorms

Best time to Visit Morocco

From October through February, the climate in Morocco is highly variable, with some years seeing mild winters and others experiencing wet and chilly ones. The months of April, May, October, and early November offer the most pleasant temperatures in Morocco.

• Watch out: October is a busy month for tourism so please confirm your travel plans much in advance

Best time to Visit Mozambique

The dry and wet seasons in Mozambique are just as diverse as they are anywhere else. April through September is the best season to visit Mozambique because of the dry weather. It can get very hot and humid during the rainy season if you venture inland or to the south.

• Best time to visit: June to October
• Watch out: Due to strong winds in August, visibility can be poor in some areas

Best time to Visit Namibia

Namibia enjoys 365 days of sunshine every year. Since Namibia is located in the southern hemisphere, the dry winter months may be rather chilly, with temperatures frequently falling below freezing. Safaris in Namibia are at their finest from June through October.

• Best time to visit: April to June
• Watch out: By the end of June, temperatures as well as the amount of greenery begin to decrease steadily

Best time to Visit Uganda

Although Uganda can be visited at any time of year, the dry seasons are typically preferred. Gorilla trekking is ideal throughout these months as well. Although the majority of Uganda experiences a tropical climate, local variations do exist; for example, the higher elevations of Mount Elgon and the Ruwenzori Range can experience temperatures well below freezing.

Best time to Visit Rwanda

Rwanda’s high altitude makes for a cooler climate despite the country’s close proximity to the Equator. The mountains are cooler, but it’s warm across the country. Daily highs in Rwanda average around 77 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a nice year-round destination. Depending on altitude, daytime highs can reach the 80s Fahrenheit and overnight lows can drop into the 60s. In the upper elevations, frost is to be expected. The climate in Rwanda is characterized by the following seasons:

• Long rains: March – May
• Long drying time: May – October
• Short rains : October – December
• Short drying time: December – March

Best time to Visit Seychelles

The winds that pass through Seychelles are mostly responsible for its weather. during October and March, the North-West trade winds provide hot and humid weather, while during January and February, the country receives a lot of rain. The best time to visit Seychelles is from May through October, when temperatures are mild and rainfall is minimal.

• Watch out: These are the busiest months for tourism in Seychelles

Best time to South Africa

Because of the wide range in local climates, the best time to visit South Africa is contextual. South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere, hence its seasons are the exact opposite of ours. Although August through October (Spring) is prime time for safaris in South Africa, the country is welcoming visitors at all times of the year. Mid-December through mid-January and Easter are peak travel times for domestic visitors, as they coincide with school breaks. As a result, major tourist hotspots in South Africa should be avoided for the time being.

• Best time to visit: May to October in the north and eastern parts; October to November and February to March in the Southern Cape region
• Watch out: Between May to August in the north and eastern parts, expect cool and dry weather with temperatures dipping below -12°C at night.

Best time to Visit Tanzania

Tanzania is a fantastic travel destination any time of the year, so before you book your trip, think about what you hope to get out of your time there. April and May are the worst months to visit Tanzania because of the heavy rainfall.

• Best time to visit: July to October
• Watch out: It can get quite cold in the higher altitudes

Best time to Visit Zambia

May through August, when temperatures are mild and rainfall is minimal, are the ideal months to visit Zambia. It’s the best time of year to watch sports because the weather is moderate. Temperatures in Zambia can reach 40 degrees Celsius during the hot and dry season; nonetheless, this is the best time of year to go on safari. The wet season may be inconvenient for travel, but it’s prime time for spotting migratory birds in their natural habitats.

• Watch out: While the days are warm and cloudless, nights can be chilly!

Best time to Visit Zimbabwe

Between May through August, when temperatures are mild and rainfall is minimal, is the ideal season to visit Zimbabwe. The daytime highs average approximately 20 degrees Celsius, while the nighttime lows are typically in the teens. Temperatures can plummet to near freezing in Zimbabwe’s mountainous regions. It is also peak safari season in Zimbabwe during these months.

• Watch out:  Pack warm winter clothes for morning game drives since temperatures can dip as low as 6°C

Best Time to Visit the Victoria Falls

From February to May, right after the summer rains, is when the world’s largest sheet of falling water, Victoria Falls, is at its most impressive. The spray from  Victoria Falls  is spectacular, but the best time to see it is not when safaris are most popular in adjacent Chobe,  Botswana , or Hwange,  Zimbabwe . When the water is at its highest and fastest, it is also too risky to attempt activities like swimming in Devil’s Pool or certain portions of white-water rapids.

Best Time For An African Safari

From September to December, the continent-wide dry and warm weather is perfect for safari tours in the southwest, Cape area tourism, and experiences in East Africa .

This is also prime season for seeing wildlife in the vast stretches of wilderness that reach from west to east. These months are ideal for wildlife photography in Southern Africa since they coincide with the time when the continent’s grand animal migrations take place.

In the national parks of Southern Africa , you have a good chance of seeing newborn animals. Traveling to Africa between September and December is an excellent time to see a wide variety of animals and people.

Southern Africa (Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe & South Africa)

This dichotomy of weather is actually a boon if you’re looking to skip Cape Town and are focused on a South Africa Safari. You might be able to get a great rate on a safari lodge at Kruger National Park. You’re really in luck if you’re looking for one of the most elusive members of the big five: leopards. Sabi Sands private game reserve is well known as being arguably the best place to spot leopards in South Africa.

The Okavango Delta is truly a year round safari destination in Southern Africa. The Delta is located in the northern part of Botswana. Rains from Angola to the northwest of Botswana make their way down to the Delta. Here, tourists are few and far between and lion, buffalo, leopard and elephant are commonly spotted here.

Namibia’s Etosha National Park is located in the northern part of the country. Namibia is known for its exceedingly arid climate which can lead to extremely hot days and cold. August and September are the ideal safari season for Etosha. While on safari in Etosha you can expect to see a variety of fauna – including elephants, lions and the occasional leopard. Etosha also boasts a healthy population of black rhino!

East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda)

The greater availability of water allows wildlife to disperse. It also triggers many herbivores like wildebeest to give birth. The Great Migration – a wildebeest migration – occurs in East Africa in and around Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

One of the most amazing facets of the Great Migration is the zebra and wildebeest crossing the Mara River while doing their best to elude hungry crocodiles. Witnessing the crossing of the Mara is the highlight of a Kenya safari or a trip to the Serengeti.

Rwanda and Uganda

Rwanda and Uganda are both known for gorilla trekking and have two distinct wet seasons. While mountain gorillas are located in the rainforest, and it can rain any time, it can be an arduous hike to see them during the wet season due to muddy conditions and long downpours. April and May are generally the wettest time, followed by November and December.

Pre-pandemic, the country of warm, friendly people drew more than 10 million annual visitors; it’s now rebounding steadily, with four million people arriving in the first half of 2023. 

“South Africa is an especially compelling nation, with many cultures, languages, and traditions to explore and enjoy,” says Cape Town local Simon Mandy, managing director of The Royal Portfolio , a South African family–owned collection of luxurious properties that include The Silo Hotel in Cape Town and Royal Malewane in Kruger National Park. “This is reflected in our cuisine, which draws on a wealth of fresh, seasonal, local ingredients and multiple influences to create unique flavor sensations.”

What’s more, it’s a well-known fact that those spending U.S. dollars get amazing value for their money — all in a country where English is spoken and there are flawless beaches, endless savannas, and impressive mountains. Having visited South Africa’s coastline, wine country, Garden Route, and wildlife preserves over the years in January, February, October and December, I have experienced a variety of weather conditions, from extreme wind to fog to baking heat. Oftentimes, it feels like multiple seasons in one day, especially in Cape Town, so I always pack a lot of adaptable layers.

Roar Africa founder and CEO Deborah Calmeyer , a safari expert and part-time Cape Town resident, loves being there most in March, when “there are no crowds and perfect warm weather to enjoy all the beauty of Table Mountain and the emerald Winelands without the December rush of people.”

For her, the reasons to visit South Africa are as numerous as its healthy populations of zebras, lions, rhinos, and elephants: “the level of service; the restaurants, in both the cities and the bush; and the diversity of experience — the cosmopolitan culture of Cape Town , the beauty of the Winelands, the ochre dunes of the Kalahari Desert, and the abundance of pristine bush, teeming with wildlife.”

If you don’t like crowds, avoid Cape Town during its busy holiday surge in December and January, says Calmeyer, who adds that the most thronged months for safari tend to be December and June through August. The rest of the year, adventurers are typically blessed with more intimate experiences for viewing wildlife plus fewer vehicles around exciting sightings. “There is so much beauty throughout the other months of the year and, provided you have the right gear, you’ll have a spectacular experience in this country of contrasts,” Calmeyer adds. According to Mandy, the quietest times to travel in South Africa are October, November, April, and May — the country as a whole receives fewer visitors during these months. 

In Cape Town, travelers will typically find May through August “the lightest on the pocket,” says Mandy, adding that the best pricing on a full South Africa itinerary — one that includes a safari — can be found in the shoulder season of April and May, their autumn. September, which tends to be somewhat quiet, can also be more accessible price-wise, according to Calmeyer. Conversely, December is when prices hit their peak, and oftentimes hotels and lodges enforce minimum stay periods.

Best Time to Visit for Good Weather 

“South Africa has a very pleasant and favorable climate year-round,” says Mandy, who notes that spring and autumn offer the most balanced weather in the majority of the country. Mandy’s personal favorite season is spring, fromSeptember to November. “It offers beautiful displays of blooming gardens and wildflowers on safari,” he says. “The weather is perfect — neither too hot nor too cold.” Between October and May — essentially the shoulder seasons and summertime (a.k.a. high season) — Calmeyer says the weather on the Western Cape is her favorite. The same goes for safari destinations across the country. “The weather is brilliant,” she says. These are also the best months for hiking, in her opinion, as there's little rainfall (contrary to Johannesburg, where most of the rain occurs in their summer). One disclaimer: Because South Africa is so large, with lots of geographical diversity, there are plenty of climate quirks as you traverse different regions. 

Best Time to Visit for a Wildlife Safari 

In Calmeyer’s expert opinion, “anytime” can be the right time to take a wildlife safari — if you use the right local travel advisor with an intimate knowledge of the country’s parks and regions, which range from the Kalahari in the Northern Cape to the most famous Kruger National Park . “There are epic opportunities for wildlife viewing 12 months a year,” she says. Typically, the drier months (June to September) are considered excellent times because “animals gather around water sources in the absence of rain,” says Mandy, meaning they can be easier to spot. The vegetation also typically dies back during these months, making smaller creatures more visible. He adds, “If you’re an avid bird-watcher, the warmer months (November to February) see the arrival of migratory birds and a dramatic increase in volume of the dawn chorus.” That time of year is referred to as green season, when the weather tends to be rainy and warm in wildlife reserves and parks. 

Best Time to Visit for a Beach Holiday 

There’s no question that summer in South Africa (December to February) is the best time to sunbathe on one of the many spectacular beaches that wrap its long, 1,770-mile coastline. Still, don’t expect leisurely swims in the sea. “Don’t forget that it is the Atlantic Ocean, so you are unlikely to get in, as it’s cold,” says Calmeyer. “However, for those who enjoy colder water, Cape Town is fabulous in December and January, with white-sand beaches, abundant water activities, and incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities in the Great African Seaforest” — the giant bamboo kelp forest seen in the documentary "My Octopus Teacher." For wetsuit-clad surfers, summer tends to equal smaller waves — plus wind — while the peak surf season is March to September, when the water is at its most frigid (low 70s). Regardless of the season, Mandy adds, “Be warned: The African sun is harsh, so don’t forget your sunscreen.” 

Best Time to Visit for Festivals 

Between lively farmers markets in Cape Town and concert series in the Cape Winelands, the pervasive energy in South Africa is festive. The Cape Town Art Fair and Cape Town International Jazz Festival , which both occur each February, are great draws. And I can personally attest that the Summer Sunset Concerts that take place from November through April at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden are captivating affairs worthy of a bountiful BYO picnic. Mandy adds, “The popular concerts offer live music in a picturesque setting beneath Table Mountain.” Harvest season in the Winelands — Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl — spans February and March, and is an exciting and beautiful time to visit both storied iconic estates and up-and-coming young winemakers. 

Worst Time to Visit South Africa 

South Africa is one of those places that holds its appeal all year long. However, Mandy warns that some travelers could find the peak of summer a bit too hot — though it typically stays in the 70s and only rarely reaches the 90s — and winter temps in remote mountainous regions in the Northern Cape too cold.

Month-by-month guide for travelling on Safari

Travelling on Safari in January

The hot summer of South Africa’s Eastern Cape means high temperatures and zero rainfall, which provides good opportunities to spot the Big Five in the region’s malaria-free private game reserves. We also recommend Kenya in January, if you want to see newborn animals. The fresh rains create a carpet of green on the savannah that supports the annual baby boom of plains game.

Travelling on Safari in February

Green season in Tanzania’s Nyerere National Park is the best time to track huge packs of wild dog hunting impala, a rare experience in most other months. Migratory northern carmine bee-eaters also make Nyerere National Park their home in February. This is the time to witness them dive bombing as your safari vehicle flushes out small insects and other prey.

Travelling on Safari in March

In Botswana, the longest migration among African mammals sees a few thousand Burchell’s zebra walk for nearly 480 km (300 miles) back and forth from Botswana to Namibia. They’re best seen in the Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana’s south. The rains across the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa make many of the roads impassable, leading to a tricky month for safari.

Temperatures are cooling down in South Africa’s Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park as the wet season ends, turning this usually arid region into an attractive and adventurous safari destination. Black-maned Kalahari lions enjoy a glut of newborn prey, and a termite population explosion draws raptors and other migratory birds to feast on this seasonal banquet.

Kruger National Park is in its dry season. As the vegetation thins out, the bush starts to reveal the wildlife previously hidden by dense foliage. As the season changes, the chilly mornings are ideal for a walking safari in one of the private game reserves that encircle the Kruger. East Africa experiences heavy rains and many camps close. We do, though, love Botswana in May, when the bush is still thick with vegetation but the animals are healthy and prices are lower.

Experiencing Victoria Falls at any time of year is impressive, but in June the water levels are slightly lower so the view of the falls is unobstructed by spray. You can add three days at the falls onto most safaris, but Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe particularly stands out at this time, when its dry season begins and it’s rich with wildlife.

July is a special time for safari, as the dry season is in full swing across East and Southern Africa. In Botswana, a great phenomenon occurs as the rains in faraway Angola move downstream and flood the Okavango Delta. Scenic flights offer you views over this huge wetland, though lodge prices are also at a premium.

The Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra are creating quintessential safari images as vast hordes cross the Mara River between Tanzania and Kenya on their perennial search for fresh forage. Most safari-goers want to see a crossing, so you’ll often share this special experience with many other visitors, which can be off-putting for some.

As the dry season really sets in across East and Southern Africa, September is a popular choice for wildlife viewing. South Luangwa in Zambia is known for its walking safaris and prolific sightings of leopard, which are even easier to spot in the parched land at this time. Mornings are chilly, so we  recommend getting out in the bush early before the temperatures rise and wildlife seeks out shade.

In northern Namibia, October is an overlap month as the onset of the rains creates some greenery to the desert. As the weather changes, the lodge prices do, too, and you can find some good-value options across southern Africa in the late part of October. Visitor numbers also drop, creating some truly remote wilderness experiences.

After months of the dry season, temperatures start to soar and the rains hit most of Southern Africa and parts of East Africa. Mahale Mountains National Park in western Tanzania experiences peak birdwatching season, as the forest comes alive with migratory birds and butterflies, and the park’s many waterfalls are in full flow. The clear air and lushness of the forest create a photographer’s dream.

If you’re looking for a luxury safari at a fraction of the cost, December is a great time to plan for. The short rainy season and high temperatures will put off some people, but there’s good wildlife spotting in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, and the Masai Mara is green and full of elephant but laden down by very few vehicles. Some flexibility with dates is required due to the Christmas travel season.

How To Spend 3 Days In Masai Mara, The Safari Park From The Lion King

This Kenyan national park is one of the best places in the world to see lions, leopards, and cheetahs in the wild.

When it comes to planning an African safari , TikTok can agree on one thing: Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya needs to be on your itinerary.

“The Land of the Big Cats” has a reputation as one of the best places on the continent to see lions, leopards, and cheetahs in the wild; it was one of the main filming locations of the live-action Lion King movie .

Masai Mara’s location in the Great Rift Valley gives it a leg up on wildlife diversity compared to other reserves. Its 580 miles of lush savannah is home to almost 90 different mammal species, and safari-goers have a good chance of spotting all of the African “Big Five” — lions, leopards, elephants, African buffalo, and the elusive black rhinos — as well as members of the slightly lesser-known (but equally ‘Gram-worthy) so-called “Ugly Five,” hyenas and warthogs included. If you visit in late summer, you might even see the Great Migration of over 2 million wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores crossing the Mara River from the neighboring Serengeti Desert.

This February, I spent 10 days visiting Kenya’s national parks and game reserves on an itinerary curated by EF Ultimate Break , a Gen Z and millennial tour company. After a week of bush glamping in sparsely vegetated and dusty parks throughout Kenya, Masai Mara was comparatively lush, and my safari Jeep was constantly stumbling upon families of elephants, giraffes, and lions.

If you’re heading to Kenya on safari soon or scrolling TikTok for future inspiration , here’s what’s worth doing at Masai Mara and how to spend three days at the reserve.

What To Do At Masai Mara

Day 1: hang out with baby elephants & meet the maasai tribe.

After a 20-plus-hour journey from Chicago, I stretched my legs at one of Nairobi’s most popular attractions. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Orphans Project houses baby elephants and rhinos who are currently unable to survive in the wild for whatever reason, and it’s just as cute as you’d expect. There was a collective “aw” as the tiniest baby black rhino stumbled out to meet the crowd, and we got introduced to all the baby elephants as they clumsily ran to the keepers for their bottles of milk.

The experience was more crowded and touristy than I expected, but I enjoyed learning the story behind each baby animal, seeing their personalities, and petting them. You’re also able to sponsor one of the baby elephants or rhinos until they’re ready to go back into the wild.

After hanging out with the animals, get into your safari Jeep to drive the five hours to Masai Mara. I stayed at PrideInn Mara Camp, which had glamping tents and cottages just steps from the park and Lake Talek, but there are plenty of accommodations around Masai Mara’s perimeter (including regular hotels like a JW Marriott Masai Mara if sleeping in a tent without air conditioning isn’t your vibe).

The best part of the PrideInn Mara Camp (and others in the area) is the presence of the Maasai tribe , which welcomed us with a traditional song and dance. There were also a number of warriors who worked in the hotel and who would walk us to and from our rooms if it was late at night.

Day 2: Take A Hot Air Balloon & A Drive

The park is huge, so soaring over the savannah to see the landscape and animals from above is an efficient and bucket list-worthy way to start off your safari experience.

We had to wake up at 4 a.m. to head over to the hot air balloon launch site, but I quickly stopped complaining about the early call time when we were in the balloon and the sun was rising over Masai Mara.

We got to take in bird's eye views of the Mara River (including a rare sighting of an adorable baby hippo that was splashing through it), check out a family of grazing giraffes from above, and get eye-level with the vultures in the trees. Afterward, we enjoyed an English-style brunch with unlimited mimosas in the middle of the bush, then headed back to the camp to nap it all off.

In the early afternoon, we headed on our second safari and stayed until twilight. After spending almost two weeks in Kenya, I realized it’s 100% worth doing two safari drives a day — one in the morning as the sun rises and one at dusk right before the predators are about to start hunting — to get the fullest picture of how the animals act in their natural habitat.

Depending on the time of day, you’ll also see different personalities from the lions. When I went in the morning, the lions weren’t the apex predators I’d anticipated. Instead, the pride was almost playful, with a young male lion with a dandelion mane nuzzling his father and the female lions, and cuddling with them in the sun. The only hint of their agility and quick reflexes were shown in how they quickly flipped from side to side and how alert they seemed at all times, with their heads suddenly popping above the grass when they’d been lazily napping in the sun just moments earlier.

Another day, as the sun went down, I saw a group of lionesses who’d been napping and were barely camouflaged in the long grass start to oh-so-casually make their move. They inched toward a grazing herd of wildebeests, their eyes locked on their next meal. I wouldn’t have experienced these different personalities if I hadn’t seen both in action.

Day 3: Go On A Morning Game Drive & Visit The Maasai Tribe

After going on a sunrise game drive, take an afternoon tour of the Maasai tribe’s village. Dressed in signature bright red robes, the warriors greeted us at the entrance of their village. They taught us some of their chants and performed a 10-minute celebratory song and dance that we were encouraged to take part in, which included mimicking the roaring of lions, shaking our shoulders, and competing to see who could jump the highest.

Then, they sectioned us off into groups to tour the family huts and learn about their pastoral lifestyle. Many of the Maasai people have gone into tourism and are employed by hotels and other hospitality businesses in the area, but they’re one of the few tribes where many members still practice their traditional way of life.

After the tour, we got to shop the tribe’s gorgeous beadwork, carved wooden products, and other souvenirs. I picked up a blue bracelet, a beaded choker, and some wooden coasters painted with safari animals to bring back home with me.

Ultimately, I came back to Chicago feeling relaxed, inspired, and fully ready to take advantage of my apartment’s air conditioning. I gained a deep appreciation for my proximity to wildlife during my bush glamping adventure (yes, even for the crickets and lizards in my tent).

Going on safari was life-changing for so many reasons. I was awestruck by seeing a 3-day-old hippo hanging out with his mom, and a pack of elephants racing across the savannah. I was surprised that the lions and giraffes seemed to barely take notice of our Jeep.

The safari also taught me a lesson in patience. Unlike in a zoo, you’re not able to control when or where you’ll see cheetahs, hippos, or prides of lions — which ends up making it so much more fulfilling when you do.

It’s not a question of if, but when, I’ll go back to Masai Mara on safari. And who knows — maybe this time I’ll spend more than a few days exploring Kenya’s most famous game reserve.

We recommend taking only two pairs of shoes. When it comes to picking those safari shoes, go with a pair of sneakers and flip flops (for camps, shower, and beaches). Your sneakers should be something comfortable you can wear on the truck, for occasional safari walks, and at the campsite at night if it’s cold.

However, if your safari itinerary includes walking safaris, you’ll need substantial sturdy safari shoes. For multi-day treks through the jungle, you’ll want to bring sturdy hiking boots . But for the occasional day trip, regular all-terrain sneakers or hiking shoes will work as safari shoes.

To go along with your safari clothing choices, you’ll need a few accessories.

Hats are great because they can help shield you from the sun and hide unwashed hair. But while hats are a definite must, but that doesn’t mean they have to be unattractive.

When it comes to your hair, you will want to keep it covered and pulled back in a ponytail or bun so it doesn’t get tangled in the wind and full of dirt from the road. We have a few suggestions for some hair accessories that will help keep high maintenance hair on the down low during your safari tour.

I found it easier to lug a soft bag than a suitcase, as everyone’s gear gets piled up under the truck. I personally use it with the Compass Rose packing cubes to stay organized and fit in everything!

You definitely will want to have a female urinary device , because the only bathroom breaks you get are in the bush. Finding adequate coverage can be a challenge, so you might also need to get comfortable with flashing your bum at other women on the trip!

You’ll want to bring a travel towel so that it can dry quickly when you’re constantly on the go. You should also pack any prescriptions you might need along with mosquito repellent … don’t forget that! And while it’s not exactly a toiletry, you’ll want a collapsible water bottle , too!

If you’re going to go the carry-on only route, make sure you cut back on your toiletries. It’ll help with TSA if you put all of your liquids in a Ziploc bag, following the 3-1-1 rule !

The Dos and Don’ts of Safari Clothing Packing

Packing for your African safari can seem overwhelming, so let’s finish off by going over our main dos and don’ts when it comes to getting together your safari gear and planning your safari attire!

What should you not wear on safari?

What you shouldn’t wear for an African safari depends highly on the actual trip type that you’re participating in. An overland trip that touches on a variety of countries is going to mean different must-haves from a short safari to Kruger Park that’s smack in the middle of a longer trip.

If your African safari trip is long, you’re going to want to focus on making comfortable, practical safari clothing a priority. But if you’re headed on a short three-day trip, you can definitely get by with wearing regular clothes.

But for both trips, we highly recommend that you DO NOT wear a romper on a safari — three days, seven days or otherwise. We know that we’ve mentioned this before, but it’s such an important note that we want to talk about it in a little more detail!

When you’re on an overland safari trip, it’s common place to simply pull over on the side of the road to go to the bathroom — in public — as there really aren’t bathrooms along the way. The reason why we stress that you shouldn’t wear rompers is due to the fact that going to bathroom in a romper means taking all of your clothes off to go to the bathroom.

While you might be able to find a somewhat “discreet” spot in the pushes to pop a squat, you’ll still be pulling off your entire romper in public and it’s much harder to attempt to conceal the top and bottom half of your body at the same time. It’s much easier to focus on covering your backside.

We know you’ll thank us for this advice later!

What colors should you wear on safari?

As exciting as it is to experience nature in its rawest form, you don’t have to immerse yourself to the extent that your safari clothing completely blends in with the foliage and desert itself. We can leave that for the Hollywood movies!

With that in mind, the best colors for safari clothes include:

• Olive green

A tip for picking the best color for your safari clothing is to go with colors that are inspired by nature. Measure your clothes with the image above, if they’re in the same tone, intensity and relatively the same color they’re good to go. You’re looking to blend in, but you don’t have to look like Crocodile Dundee or wear full tactical gear!

What color should you not wear on safari?

If you’ve done your safari clothing due diligence, chances are you’ve come across something that tells you not to wear bright colors. It seems like a strange request, but it’s recommended that you choose neutral colors because you don’t want the animals to see you — if they do they might be scared off!

Stick to neutral colors but avoid white because your safari clothes are bound to get very dirty, especially if you’re camping, and white will show it all!

Can you wear black on safari?

Wearing black on safari is not recommended. Black clothing attracts mosquitoes, and you’ll want to avoid that as much as possible to keep your trip its most enjoyable!

If you do end up bringing some black pieces, keep them to a minimum and opt for lightweight fabrics wherever possible!

On August 2, 2022, Just got back from South Africa; Cape Town, Cape Winelands, then off to safari at Kruger; Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe; Botswana, Okavango Delta! It was a great 12-women trip, Women, Wine and Wild. I researched and looked at this site for everything from suitcases, carry-ons, cross-body bags, packing, lists of clothes, shoes, jackets, underpinnings, toiletries, hats, scarves, etc.; for varying types of travel, city, winelands, safaris, and Travel Fashion Girl came through on all fronts – I was ordering things left and right even in the last few days and got it all together and had the most wonderful trip. I may have taken a little too much, but I really used most everything I brought so it all worked out. But as they say, less is more; I wouldn’t bother even with a little heel for dinners out if it’s only a few night in a city. I wouldn’t take as many pants as those can be interchangeable pretty easily, especially if you bring a few blouses/tops. For chilly mornings or evenings, a lightweight puffer jacket was perfect. And scarves are perfect to help mix it all up and really be able to wear the same things with different scarves. TFG is an amazing place to go for everything travel; I love it!

Just got back from our 3 week honeymoon on safari in Kenya and Tanzania including a week in Zanzibar – these packing lists from TFG were so helpful for knowing what to expect and helping to minimize how much luggage to bring. Definitely recommend carry on backpack for this trip to fit in the small trunks of the land cruisers and for small airplanes (we took one with only 12 seats!)

Someone recommended we take soft travel bags to fit onto the small airplanes which I would NOT do again. Due to their weight, it made the grueling trek through airports a painful experience 😣 Instead, we would have preferred rolling, carry-on luggage. My two-cents, but unless you travel lightly, soft bags aren’t the way to go for this type of trip. Anyone else?

Loved this packing list! I only went on a two day safari but this was immensely helpful with helping me choose the right clothes to pack for a conference plus my safari outing.

We’re just back from a Safari in Zimbabwe , Botswana and Zambia And I found previous posts on Safari clothing on this site invaluable! And def no all in ones ! We stopped for loo breaks whenever needed and took it in turns to go round to the back of the truck so it was totally private and discreet! I took very thin summer dresses for the middle of the days and was really glad of these . And we definitely needed warm things for early morning … I had a cashmere snood I was so thankful for … I could pull it up over the back of my head . Also silk gloves ! And it was the best holiday we have ever had !

Just came back from a trip that included: Capetown; The Winelands; Vic Falls; Chobie game drive in Botswana; self drive through Kruger; and a luxury resort/safari game drive; — oh yeah and we had a two day stop over in Doha (!) So we had temps that ranged from 50-65 degrees in Capetown/Winelands; 55-85 in Kruger, and 98-112 degrees in Doha (!)

So one big thing to consider is that the weather is vastly different depending where you go: Capetown in July is Winter, which is chilly and drizzly, can be windy and stormy, BUT because it’s their winter, it was the best time to go on Safari on the other side of South Africa, which was Great Kruger National Park, so just remember, your season might not be their season. Best safari pants I brought was North Face Hybrid Yoga/cargo pants in olive — stretchy, quick dry, had tons of pockets, but felt like leggings. Also the lululemon “Smooth Departure” packable rain coat. Ultra light, and looks good while on safari or in the city. Lastly, even if you go during a “light bug” season, I would recommend at least one Insect Shield SPF long sleeve top (that can be also rolled up) and at least two pairs of their socks. Long sleeve shirts that have SPF can keep you cooler than a t-shirt because the African sun is HOT!! And even if you come from a sunny state (Like CA, as I do) your arms can get really get burnt. Also, a first layer underlayer (for cold) can do double duty. I wore it over my bathing suit while I was going into Devil’s Pool (Victoria Falls), and it really saved me because the water was COLD!! Because it was dry-wicking, it dried almost immediately. Also, just a note: our safari guides would NOT have recommended wearing that bright turquoise jacket that’s pictured in the photo (especially on a walking safari) — maybe it was more “neutral” looking in real life?

YES it gets COLD, even in summer! Keep in mind that some local flights out into the bush have a weight limit on luggage so double check on this- they’re strict! Also, some safari’s do laundry daily so that helps cut down on what you need. I survived a 2 week trip with 2 pairs of leggings, 1 hiking pant from Athleta (cute!), 1 pr of shorts, 5 shirts, (mix of button ups, tanks and athletic type t’s) a fleece and a windbreaker. Don’t overdo the shoes either! One pair of sneaker types and one pair of sandals is fine!

Great article! Having lived in Africa for the past nine years, I might also advise against wearing shorts. Most of Africa is significantly more conservative than many Western countries, and the only people I ever see in shorts are the tourists and, at times, wearing anything cut above the knee can attract unwanted attention from males- an unfortunate but true reality

Hi Alex, Emily’s comment about shorts also might include strappy tank tops and leggings. Your comment about wearing sports bras was right on. Safari trucks have lousy shocks and you will be bounced around. A scarf is useful for keeping dust out of you eyes and mouth.

We are going to Cape Town for 4 days then winery for 4 days, safari for 5 then victoria falls. Will it look silly if I wear kaftans for dinners? And what about days for shopping and touring in towns? I can’t imagine having only a carry on and not a variety of clothing.

If you’d normally wear kaftans to dinners at home then you should wear them while you’re traveling too 🙂

No blue clothing, as it (like black) attracts mosquitos. Bring decent underwear, something you won’t be embarrassed for camp staff to wash by hand, as I found one fellow doing. You’ll wear the long-sleeve shirt in the jeep during the afternoon so you don’t get sunburned. Unless you’ll hike, closed-toe sandals are good for everything. I wore clogs for the plane and around camp. Glad I brought a fleece jacket for cold mornings. I brought older clothing and left it. In Tanzania, I left sneakers with a camp staffer who was extremely grateful, even though they were one size too big for him. To my safari driver went my bathing suit and robe (someone will wear them), fleece jacket, and old Tevas. I suggest a headlamp, which you may need (tents and hotels were short on light).

I would add one trash bag to the packing list. In the morning game drive on our last day of the safari, it rained cats and dogs on us, and we got soaked (we all had rain ponchos on but they didn’t help much). Thankfully, someone had trash bags to spare, so we could put the wet clothes in the bag and put in the luggage without everything else getting damp.

Just got back from an Africa safari, and here is my recommendations: 1.) Take Sunscreen! I burned one half of my face sitting in the safari vehicle one day…so I switched sides to burn evenly the next. 2.) A hat would help combat problem #1. 3.) Don’t waste space on hair dryers or makeup etc. No one in the bush cares. 🙂 Bring soap, shampoo, toothpaste and call it done. 4.) I only brought hiking tennis shoes. I longed for a pair of flip flops on the long days in a car. 5.) It can get quite chilly at night. Bring long pants for sleeping if you are staying in a tented camp. I was on my honeymoon so pajama’s wasn’t a top priority when packing…wish it had been! Lol! 6.) Bring a clean outfit for the plane ride home and put it aside. Coming out of the bush after a week of bucket showers you feel dirty enough. 7.) Last and most important: Don’t pack anything that resembles food in a tented camp. I had a granola bar in my bag and we had a honey badger break into our tent while we were gone. It ate the granola bar, chewed up all my underwear, and then took a big poop in my husbands suit case!

At least one knee length skirt or dress is a must if you are going to be exploring outside of the parks at all. A sarong also goes a long way and I have a nice knit hat I alway bring along in the winter. Also, the first time I traveled to Tanzania I made the mistake of thinking I would only need camping gear and spent the whole time wishing I had a cute top with me. I highly recommend bringing an outfit you can wear to dinner or a club. Overall, great tips! Thanks!

I am not sure if you have already gone trekking or not, but I might consider changing your black skirt to tan, beige, grey or even light pink. I spent two years in and out of Dubai and Afghanistan….you will constantly be trying to clean your black skirt, the sand is more like a talcum powder and sticks to everything, also the dark colours are hot! You will definitely want something feminine/girlie though and the scarves are an excellent idea! Have a wonderful time! 🙂

As always, love, love, love the lists! In all parts of Africa, it’s best to always err on the side of modesty and cameo prints should always be avoided. On safari, it would be worth spending the extra money for clothing that is sunscreen rated/treated with bug repellent.

#1 Botswana

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Even though the country is still underdeveloped and most of the population live in rural households, its national parks, and sight-seeing destinations are on the top 10 of our lists.

Even though many would face some difficulties in locating Malawi on a map, given how tiny it is, the country is home to the world-renowned Lake Malawi National Park. This is practically one-third of the country and is the most biodiverse lake in the world.

Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on  National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late  Dian Fossey  back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. It's a safe place where visitors can see 400 different avian species.

iOS 18 May Feature All-New 'Safari Browsing Assistant'

iOS 18 will apparently feature a new Safari browsing assistant, according to backend code on Apple's servers discovered by Nicolás Álvarez . MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the code exists, but not many details are known at this time.

Update: Álvarez has since said that iCloud Private Relay might not be related to this feature.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.

Álvarez also uncovered a so-called "Encrypted Visual Search" feature in the backend code on Apple's servers, but no specific details are known. MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year discovered a new Visual Search feature for Apple's Vision Pro headset in visionOS beta code, which would allow users to copy and paste printed text from the real world into apps and more, but the feature has yet to launch. It is possible that Apple is planning to debut a more secure version of the feature. However, the code could also relate to the iPhone's existing Visual Look Up feature that can identify objects in photos and videos.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so we should learn more about these potential new features in a few more months.

Monday's the day: Here's your total solar eclipse weather forecast

Monday is the day serious eclipse fans have been waiting years for.

Monday afternoon, weather permitting, a total eclipse of the sun will grace the skies above the U.S., all the way from southern Texas to northern Maine.

It will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the lower 48 states until 2044.

Tens of millions of people in the United States are expected to see the eclipse, and even those who find themselves outside its direct path are likely to witness the  stunning celestial event  in some form. 

Here's the latest weather forecast:

Where will the solar eclipse be visible? A 'nearly perfect day' for some

Federal forecasters said the best chances for clear skies within the path of totality will be in northern New England, despite some chilly temperatures: "New England will likely wake up to clearing skies with cold temperatures into the 20s Monday morning under a fresh snow cover from the recent nor'easter," National Weather Service forecaster Kwan-Yin Kong said Sunday .

The weather service forecast office in Caribou, Maine , confirmed that Sunday. "Despite being in a relatively active stormy period, somehow we scored a nearly perfect day Monday to observe the eclipse under sunny to mostly sunny skies during the mid-afternoon hours," the service said in a forecast discussion.

In Burlington, Vermont , weather service forecasters also were optimistic, despite the chance of some high clouds streaming in during the afternoon: "Cloud cover should not be thick enough to obscure the event," forecasters said.

Meteorologists at Weather.com were also enthused about the splendid forecast for the region: "The portion of the path of totality in northern New England could have some of the best weather in the country for viewing," meteorologist Jonathan Erdman said.

There probably will be breaks in the clouds from northern Arkansas to central Ohio behind a front. But that is the area of "greatest uncertainty due to potential high clouds," the Weather Prediction Center said.

Outside the path of totality, which stretches from Texas to Maine, AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said, "the best locations for viewing can be the Southwest deserts, much of California, New England and parts of the Southeast."

He said major cities such as Los Angeles, El Paso, New York, Boston and Raleigh, North Carolina, should all have nice views of the eclipse from start to finish.

Where will it be cloudy?

Unfortunately for folks in the path of totality, adverse viewing conditions are expected from Missouri and Kansas southward into central and east Texas, AccuWeather said , where it is likely to be cloudy with showers and perhaps some thunderstorms.

Kong said southern Texas will wake up to considerable clouds Monday morning.

The Weather Prediction Center said Sunday afternoon that clouds may also impede viewing across Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania and parts of New York. Rain showers are possible during totality in all of those areas.

For the partial eclipse,  AccuWeather  long-range expert Joe Lundberg added that "other areas with poor viewing conditions will be from Wisconsin westward through South Dakota and Nebraska to Washington and Oregon."

Severe storms, tornadoes possible in South

Severe thunderstorms were expected to rattle portions of the southern U.S. on Monday and Tuesday.

"Multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms should develop from early afternoon Monday through Tuesday morning across a large portion of Texas, into south Oklahoma, southwest Arkansas, and west Louisiana," the Storm Prediction Center said Sunday. "A few tornadoes, scattered large to very large hail, and isolated severe wind gusts will be possible."

Big Texas cities such as Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin are all at risk of severe storms Monday, the center said.

Heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding across the region, the Weather Prediction Center warned.

What time is the solar eclipse? 

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path.  You can search by ZIP code  to find the exact time for your location. 

Can you drive during a solar eclipse? 

It's  safe to drive during an eclipse  as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road during the total solar eclipse. 

The automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the eclipse to find a safe place to park and wear your eclipse glasses. 

Authorities also are reminding people to  not drive while wearing solar eclipse glasses . Eclipse glasses are designed specifically for an eclipse, and you would not be able to see the road well enough while wearing them.

Canada will get to see the show, too

The eclipse also will grace the skies above five eastern provinces of Canada. It's the first of its kind since 1979 in Canada, and it is creating a carnival atmosphere there. Many people have been making travel plans for months.

In the Niagara Falls area, the local government has declared a state of emergency. More than 1 million people, a record, are expected to converge along the majestic falls and the popular tourist destination.

Your dogs and cats will be fine

Don't worry, your dog or cat probably will be oblivious to the eclipse, according to Pasco, a science education company.

"It is unlikely that dogs and cats will react to solar eclipses, as they typically do not have a strong biological or behavioral response to changes in light or natural phenomena like eclipses," Pasco reports.

Just in case, Pasco recommends you keep your pets inside during the eclipse and distract them with toys or treats.

How to photograph a solar eclipse with your cellphone

You'll need to have the  right solar filter in front of your cellphone camera  to protect both your device  and eyesight , according to Carly Stocks, a Utah-based astronomical photographer who talked to USA TODAY.

The filter must be  made specifically for solar viewing , Stocks said. She also emphasized the need to place a filter that is larger than the lens itself and to keep it on at all times if you're in a location where the eclipse is only partially visible. She recommends purchasing a small 4- by 4-inch sheet of the Thousand Oaks solar filter.

And if you're observing the sky in a location where the total eclipse is visible, you'll have a moment when you can take off the solar lens entirely and capture unfiltered images.

"During totality, you can remove all filters," Stocks told USA TODAY. "If you're looking with the solar glasses and you don't see anything, then it's safe to look at it during that time."

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be  20 years  before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after the total solar  eclipse  on April 8, the next total solar eclipse that can be seen from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

NASA will launch 3 rockets into space during the eclipse

NASA is preparing to launch three giant rockets into our atmosphere on the day of the eclipse. The agency is hoping to gather some valuable scientific data about  how solar eclipses alter Earth’s upper atmosphere .

NASA is using spacecraft called  sounding rockets  that are equipped with scientific instruments to take measurements and perform experiments during its sub-orbital flight.

The three rockets will launch from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia and will reach an intended altitude of 260 miles,  NASA said . That's high enough to study disturbances  during a total solar eclipse  in the ionosphere, a region of Earth’s atmosphere between 55 to 310 miles above the ground.

Scientists hope to collect data on how the sun's sudden disappearance during the eclipse creates disturbances that could interfere with communications here on Earth.

“Understanding the ionosphere and developing models to help us predict disturbances is crucial to making sure our increasingly communication-dependent world operates smoothly," said mission leader  Aroh Barjatya , an engineering physicist at Florida's Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

'It is going to be dicey': Wisconsin eclipse forecast has lots of clouds, uncertainty

If you live in the southeastern parts of the state — including Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Lake Geneva and Janesville — you have the best chance out of anywhere in Wisconsin at seeing Monday's partial solar eclipse.

Much of the state is expected to have cloud cover that could obscure the eclipse, though when those clouds will move out and open up a view of the rare phenomenon is still up in the air. The timing could become more certain by late Monday morning.

"It is going to be dicey as far as cloud cover goes," explained John Gagan from the National Weather Service in Milwaukee. "Milwaukee will kind of be in an area where they could see some clearing, but I don't know if we're going to see 100% clear skies."

Going north and west from Milwaukee, it's more likely that clouds will prevent seeing the eclipse. For example, Madison is right on the line. It's "entirely possible" that the skies could clear up in time, especially because the eclipse peaks around 2 p.m. there.

"We're going to have clouds in the morning that are trying to move out," Gagan said. "When they exit, that's going to be the key."

The same is true for the Fox Valley. Appleton and Green Bay will start the day with "quite a bit of cloud cover," but skies will partially clear by the late morning or early afternoon, explained Scott Berschback from the National Weather Service in Green Bay.

"Just how much they clear, there's some uncertainty there, unfortunately," he said. "A couple models have it cleared out all the way up through Green Bay. Some of the models keep the cloud cover pretty thick all the way through the early afternoon and all the way down to Oshkosh."

Areas north of Highway 29 are also expected to be covered with clouds that will make seeing the eclipse difficult.

If the clouds are lower in the sky, they might entirely obstruct your view of the eclipse. Because Wisconsin is not within the path of totality, the effects are already similar to an overcast day .

"The sky will still dim, but you won't see the sun. You'll see kind of a halo of the sun behind the clouds. It'll still be visible, it just kind of takes away some of the effect," Berschback said. "The eclipse will still happen ... whether you see the full effect of it, that's the question."

But if the clouds are cirrus clouds — which are very high clouds around 20,000 to 30,000 feet in the air — they may be thin enough to catch a look.

Gagan said it's important to still protect your eyes, even if you're looking at the eclipse through gaps in clouds. Even if special eclipse glasses are sold out or unavailable, there are do-it-yourself projects to indirectly see the eclipse using supplies like cardboard or cardstock.

"Don't stare at the sun," he said. "The sun is still the sun, and it's still just as strong, and it's still just as damaging. Please, please, please wear that protection."

Where to Go on an African Safari in January

Animals are less spread out during the dry months and spotting them tends to be easier. Wildebeest Calving Season in the Serengeti, Tanzania

During January and February more than a million wildebeest take a break from their perpetual migration to have their young. They settle in the Ndutu area of the Southern Serengeti to calve and nurture their newborns until they are strong enough to start their journey north. Within a three-week period about half a million wildebeest are born. Thousands of zebras and gazelles follow the same script, and the abundance of babies attracts an all-time high of predators to the area.

The Okavango–Makgadikgadi Zebra Migration in Botswana

Much less known than the wildebeest migration in East Africa is the annual zebra migration between the Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi Pans NP in Botswana. Triggered by rain, about 20,000 zebras travel the 500km return route to spend January to March at the pans. As most animal migrations in southern Africa have been eradicated due to fences and human habitation blocking the ancient routes, witnessing this great trek is extremely special.
