Best time for travel discover scotland.

While just about any month is great to visit Scotland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Discover Scotland tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: During the springtime, you’ll find fewer crowds in places like Orkney and the Isle of Skye, which can give you more opportunities to take the time to appreciate your surroundings.

Summer: August is the perfect time to visit Edinburgh, as the Military Tattoo and Edinburgh Festival both take place then. It’s crowded, but the city is alive with many cultural events. And generally, it’s good weather (fingers crossed for not too much rain!). Places like Orkney and the Isle of Skye can be crowded, too, but longer days give you more time to explore.

Fall: After mid-September, there are fewer crowds at Orkney and the Isle of Skye, making your visit all the more relaxing.

Start your sightseeing by travelling through the heart of the city along Princes Street, famous for its shops on one side and gardens on the other. See the 18th century New Town with its broad streets, spacious squares and elegant townhouses. Stop to visit the imposing Edinburgh Castle, perched high above the city on volcanic rock. Then transfer to your nearby hotel, check-in and enjoy some time to settle into your room.

DINNER & OVERNIGHT: Doubletree by Hilton Edinburgh (Or Similar)

This morning, motor a short distance to visit the Hopetoun House, which dates back to the 17th century. In Outlander, the Hopetoun House was used as the setting for the residence of the Duke of Sandringham in Season 1, Episode 10. Next, motor a short distance to visit the ruins of Midhope Castle, which original was used as one of the stand-ins for the Lallybroch Estate. Continue to the village of Blackness and visit Blackness Castle. The 15th-century castle was seen in Season 1, Episode 6 and 8; the heartbreaking scene, where Jaime gets whipped by the notorious Black Jack Randall was filmed here. Your final visit of the day will be to Culross Palace, which was built between the later part of the 16th century and into the 17th century by Sir George Bruce. Today, the National Trust maintains the property, which includes the magnificent garden in the back of the property. The garden was used as Claire Randall’s herb garden. Return to Edinburgh.

In the evening, head to Torphichen Inn to enjoy an Outlander inspired evening. The evening will include Scottish music and the reading of excerpts from the books. Also, enjoy an Outlander inspired meal with your fellow travellers. TBC

OVERNIGHT: Doubletree by Hilton Edinburgh (Or Similar)

After breakfast, drive to Doune so you can visit Doune Castle, which was first constructed in the 13th century but later had to be rebuilt in the 14th century due to the Scottish Wars of Independence. The castle also doubled as fictitious Castle Leoch in the television show, Outlander. Continue to visit Falkland Palace, which was the filming location of Mrs Baird’s Bed and Breakfast (Covenanter Hotel) on the hit show, Outlander. Head to Stirling and visit Deanston Distillery (with whiskey tasting) to see where Comte St. Germain stores his wine during Season 2, Episode 1 of Outlander. Then check into your nearby hotel, where you will have some time to relax or freshen up before tonight’s festivities.

Leaving Stirling, journey to Newtonmore and visit the Highland Folk Museum, which invites you to enter the World of the Highlander; here you can see, touch, smell and feel the atmosphere of the old Highlander way. Track how Highland people dealt with their environment, creating ingenious solutions to their everyday problems of providing light, heat, shelter, clothing and food. The museum property also doubled as a MacKenzie village. Then drive to Nairn, where you will check into your hotel for dinner and your overnight stay.

DINNER & OVERNIGHT: Muthu Newton Nairn (Or Similar)

Motor a short distance to Culloden Moor so you can tour the Visitor Centre. Walk around the battlefield where, on April 16, 1746, British Government forces defeated the army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart in just one hour and ended hopes of restoring the Jacobite Stuarts to the British throne. Also see the Frasers Stone, which is dedicated to all the Frasers who died tragically on that April day. Head back to Inverness to see the Clava Cairns, which give off a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere all of their own. In the popular series, Outlander, the Clava Cairns are referred to by the name of “Split Stone” and are how the main heroine, Clare Randall, ends up travelling back to the 18th century. Next, drive to Fort Augustus, where you will take a boat ride on Loch Ness. This excursion will allow you to take in the lovely scenery and if you want you can also keep an eye out for the famous monster, “Nessie.”

Departing Inverness, journey to Kyle of Lochalsh to visit the picturesque Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most iconic images of Scotland. While Jaime and Claire have never been to the castle it emulates the romance and magic that is the Highlands. Next, travel via Skye Bridge to the charming Isle of Skye for a panoramic tour. After your tour, drive to Armadale so you can take a ferry to Mallaig. Then head to Fort William, where you will check into your quaint hotel. Once you settle into your room, join your fellow travellers for dinner in the hotel restaurant.

See the Victorian City Chambers, opened in 1888 by Queen Victoria. Pass Glasgow Cathedral, a splendid 12th-century Gothic building dedicated to St. Mungo, the patron saint of the city. Pass by Pollok Country Park, another location that Clare searched for herbs before visiting George Square to see where Frank proposed to Clare on the show, Outlander. Then transfer to your nearby hotel, where you will check-in for dinner and your overnight stay.

2023 Outlander Tours of Scotland

The 2024 outlander tours are now available, here they are: outlander tours of scotland 2024, outlander tours of scotland 2023.

Immerse yourself in the beautiful vistas and local villages of Scotland where Jamie & Claire lived and loved! These tours are led by the fabulous guides from Inverness Tours who tell you all of the tidbits about Outlander, and also share their love and vast knowledge about Scotland and Scottish history. Plus, they're fun!

These immersive Outlander Tours of Scotland are small group, 7 passenger 8 night (including hotels, entrance fees and 5* Scottish guides) total immersions into the spectacular sights & scenery of the Outlander TV Series and of Diana Gabaldon's original Outlander book series. This tour also includes a performance by "The Bard" (if available) from Castle Leoch and then period costumes on the final day. This is one of the few tours that actually visits the filming site of Craigh na Dun!

The Outlander Redoux Tours of Scotland include 3 things that travelers on the Immersion tour requested: 1) a ride on the Jacobite Train, 2) more time in Inverness and 3) more time on the Isle of Skye (but wait, there's more!) as well sites from season 2 and some from seasons 3 and 4! This tour includes mill where Jamie got naked, the church where Jamie and Claire were married, Rosslyn Chapel, Eilean Donan Castle, two nights on the Isle of Skye and a ride on the Jacobite Steam Train (yes, the Hogwarts Express or the Harry Potter Train from Platform 9¾ ).

The Ancient Scotland Tours delve into fascinating sites of Scottish History. This tour includes Kilmartin Glen, which holds over 300 ancient monuments, Old Inverlochy Castle and medieval cathedral and priory of St Andrews on the mainland of Scotland. The highlight of this tour is the 2 full days on the Orkney Islands where you'll experience a plethora of intriguing ancient sites including Standing Stones of Stenness, Ring of Brodgar, Ness of Brodgar, Maeshowe, Skara Brae, Italian Chapel, Orkney Winery, Bishop's Palace, Earl's Palace, as well as St Magnus Cathedral.

More tours can be added by request for groups of 4 or more. See Testimonials Here.

Longevity! Hugh Allison and I have been running these Outlander tours for 6 years now (since the TV series started), and for years before that he was taking people on day tours of the sites from the Outlander books. (He even took Diana Gabaldon on a tour - she has a picture on her website.) Hugh and I combined forces to create an 8 night tour and have gotten rave reviews. Plus, we are one of the few tours to visit the filming site of Craigh na Dun! See our testimonials here. And here are our Facebook Reviews.

Private family or group tours can be arranged. Give me a call, text me or drop me an email and let me help you make your dream a reality. I love helping people plan their trips! And I am a full service travel agent. Contact Us

As one past traveler said: "I can't even begin to tell you what a thrilling experience we all had in Scotland. It was the best trip EVER! It was absolutely everything I had hoped for as an Outlander fan, and it went well beyond expectations. The lodging was great, the excursions with Ian were fabulous and the memories we made are priceless. We all fell in love with Scotland!"

TREES FOR SCOTLAND: For every person that signs up for a 2023 tour and pays a deposit in 2022 - You'll have a tree planted in Scotland to support the John Muir Trust in their "work to regenerate native woodlands in some of our wildest landscapes, restoring ecosystems and encouraging the return of wildlife." THIRTY trees have been planted so far in 2022! A donation for 20 trees was made in October as well as a donation for 10 trees in June of 2022.
