Carnival Cruise Luggage Sizes and Restrictions

For those seeking a quick overview of the luggage guidelines for Carnival Cruise, the table below offers concise answers to the most common questions.

It’s designed to provide travelers with immediate clarity on essential packing considerations for your Carnival cruise.

Additionally, for a deeper understanding and further insights, each of the categories presented in the table is elaborated upon in detail in the following sections and providing extra tips along the way.

Remember , if you are travelling by plane for any part of your vacation you will also have to adhere to the airline guidelines too.

You can double-check the current Carnival luggage policy guidelines here and look under “How Much Luggage Can I Bring”.

Carnival Cruise Luggage Size Limit

The key Carnival cruise luggage limits are outlined below:

Weight Limit for Checked Bags

Carnival Cruise Line stipulates that checked luggage should not exceed a weight of 50 pounds .

Size Restrictions for Checked Bags

The dimensions for checked bags should be up to 16 inches in height and 24 inches in width . The length of the bag is not specified and is therefore flexible.

Security Measures

For the safety and security of all passengers, it’s essential that all luggage remains unlocked during the voyage.  This also helps speed up the screening princess if any luggage needs to be manually checked.

Boarding Experience

From personal observations, Carnival typically doesn’t weigh either carry-on bags or checked luggage during the boarding process, however, that doesn’t mean you should exceed guidelines.

How Strict Is Carnival With Luggage Weight Limit?

Carnival Cruise Line has set a weight limit of 50 pounds for checked luggage.

However, based on personal experiences and observations, Carnival typically does not weigh carry-on bags or checked luggage during the boarding process.

While it’s essential to adhere to the guidelines and ensure your bags aren’t excessively heavy for the porters, Carnival’s approach to luggage weight tends to be more lenient compared to most airlines.

How Many Bags Can You Take On A Carnival Cruise?

While there is no strict limit on the number of bags you can bring on a Carnival Cruise, it’s suggested that passengers limit their luggage to one bag per person for cruises of 3-5 days duration and no more than two bags per person for cruises lasting 6 days or more.

When preparing for a Carnival Cruise, understanding the luggage guidelines ensures a smooth boarding process. The recommendations are based on the duration of the cruise:

  • 3-5 Day Cruises: It’s suggested that passengers bring only one bag. This helps in managing space and ensures that everyone has enough room for their belongings.
  • 6+ Day Cruises: Passengers can bring up to two bags. Given the longer duration, this allows for more clothing and essentials without overburdening the storage capacities.

It’s worth noting that these are recommendations, aiming to optimize the comfort and convenience of all passengers on board.

Most travelers find that two bags per person are sufficient and can easily hold casual attire and other essentials for the entire trip.

While there’s no strict limit on the number of bags, cabin storage can be a challenge. The design of cruise cabins, though efficient, offers limited space.

Not all bags may fit under the bed, potentially causing the cabin to feel cluttered.

Carnival Carry-on Bag Rules

There are a few hard set rules when it comes to taking a carry-on bag on a Carnival cruise ship.

However, there are various aspects to bear in mind.

How Many Carry-On Bags Allowed On Carnival Cruise

Carnival Cruise does not impose a strict limit on the number of carry-on bags a passenger can bring aboard.

However, it’s generally advised for passengers to limit themselves to one main carry-on bag and a personal item, such as a purse or backpack.

What Can You Pack in a Carry on

It’s essential to have necessary items in a carry-on since it might take time for checked luggage to be delivered to the cabin.

Every passenger is advised to have a carry-on bag containing:

  • Boarding documentation
  • Medications
  • Personal items such as toiletries and electronics
  • Other immediate necessities

Unlike airports, there are no TSA guidelines to follow when boarding a Carnival cruise ship.

There are no restrictions on the amount of liquids that can be brought on a cruise ship.

However, if you are flying to the cruise port, it’s essential to follow all rules for flights regarding liquids.

While there’s no rule against bringing medications without their original container, it’s recommended to have them, t’s also advised to keep a printed list of medications or have it accessible in your email.

Carnival Carry-on Bag Size and Types

There are no strict rules about the size of the carry-on bag, but it should be able to fit through a security scanner or x-ray machine.

Examples of carry-on bags include:

  • Duffel Bags
  • Small rolling Suitcases
  • Messenger Bags
  • Laptop Bags
  • Travel Satchels
  • Underseat Bags
  • Camera Bags
  • Weekender Bags

How To Measure Luggage For Carnival Cruise

The way you measure your luggage for a Carnival Cruise and any other cruise line for that matter might be different to what you expect if you are new to cruising.

Typically some people might think of the height of a suitcase when it’s standing upright, however, this is not the case, it’s actually measured lying flat, as it would be as it passes lying flat through any cruise scanners .

Measuring your luggage accurately for a Carnival Cruise ensures that you adhere to their guidelines and have a hassle-free boarding experience.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you measure your luggage:

Gather Tools

You’ll need a tape measure, preferably one that has both inches and centimeters for precision.  Plus a luggage scale or home scale to weigh it.

Measure Height

Lay your luggage on a flat surface. Start measuring from the floor to the top of the suitcase, as if you are measuring its thickness.  The height should not exceed 16 inches or 40 cm.

(16 inches is the max height of the suitcase as it lies flat on the convey belt of the scanner, any higher would fit through).

Measure Width

With the luggage flat on the floor (or other surface)  measure its widest point from one side to the other.  The width should not exceed 24 inches or 60 cm.

Note on Length

Carnival Cruise Line specifies limits for height and width, but the length (or depth) of the bag is not explicitly mentioned.

However, it’s still a good idea to ensure your bag isn’t excessively long to ensure easy storage in your stateroom.

Check Weight

Use a luggage scale for an accurate reading, or alternatively, you could use a regular home scale.

If using a home scale, first weigh yourself, then weigh yourself while holding the luggage. Subtract your weight from the combined weight to determine the weight of the luggage.

Remember, Carnival’s weight limit for checked bags is 50 pounds or 22.6kg.

Security Considerations

Ensure that all luggage remains unlocked for security checks. This is a requirement by Carnival for the safety and security of all passengers.

Final Check

Once you’ve measured and packed, give your luggage a once-over. Ensure zippers are closed, tags are attached, and it’s not overstuffed, which could distort the measurements.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared for your Carnival Cruise journey, ensuring that your luggage meets the cruise line’s requirements and contributes to a smooth boarding process.

What Can You Bring On A Carnival Cruise

To ensure you’re well-prepared for every moment on your cruise, here’s a suggested packing guide of what to consider.

For your Carnival cruise, it’s essential to pack a variety of clothing suitable for both on-board activities and shore excursions.

During the day, think casual: swimwear, cover-ups, shorts, t-shirts, and comfortable walking shoes are ideal.

As the sun sets and the evening activities begin, you’ll might want to change into something a bit more formal. Casual dresses for women and slacks paired with collared shirts for men are perfect for most nights.

Additionally, if you want to join in the Carnival Cruise Elegant Nights, consider packing a formal dress, suit, or even a tuxedo for those special occasions.

Travel Essentials

Never forget your crucial travel documents.

This includes your passport, cruise tickets, and any visas you might need for the destinations on your itinerary.

For extra peace of mind some people choose to have a copy of these documents stored separately.

Day Trip Necessities

When you’re exploring ports or participating in excursions, a collapsible daypack or bag can be incredibly handy.

For those sunny destinations, don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen. If you’re visiting non-English speaking locations, translation and guide books can be invaluable (or use your phones).

Fill it with essentials like a rain jacket or poncho, especially if you’re traveling to destinations with unpredictable weather. An umbrella might also be a good addition.

Entertainment and Exploration

While there’s plenty to do on all the Carnival ships, you might want some downtime.

Bring along books, magazines, or e-readers for those quiet moments.

If your cruise is taking you to scenic destinations, like the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska, a pair of binoculars is a must-have. You’ll appreciate them when you’re trying to spot distant wildlife or natural wonders.

Gadgets and Electronics:

In today’s digital age, your phone, camera, and other electronic devices are likely to accompany you.

Ensure you pack all necessary chargers. If you’re an avid photographer or just want to capture memories, your camera is essential.

Remember to bring extra memory cards and batteries.

Health and Comfort

Pack your toiletries, prescription medications, and consider adding a small first-aid kit. Depending on your destination, insect repellent might also be a good idea.

Carnival Cruise Luggage Size in 2024: Tips & Guidelines

Posted on Last updated: February 17, 2024

Getting the luggage size right is crucial. You want to strike a balance between having everything you need and not overpacking.

Picture this: lugging around oversized bags versus breezing through with just what you need – quite a contrast, right?

Carnival Cruise Luggage Size and Weight Restrictions

Checked luggage dimensions.

Carnival Cruise Line does not strictly enforce specific dimensions for checked luggage.

However, they recommend that each piece of checked luggage not exceed 16 inches wide (about 40.6 cm), 24 inches high (about 61 cm), and 30 inches long (about 76.2 cm).

This guideline is suggested to ensure that cruise luggage can be efficiently handled and stored in the staterooms.

Guests are typically allowed to check two pieces of luggage per person, with each piece weighing no more than 50 pounds (approximately 22.68 kilograms).

These guidelines aim to facilitate the smooth handling and storage of luggage onboard, considering the limited space in cabins and the overall logistics of managing the baggage of thousands of passengers.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding luggage policies, including checked luggage dimensions and any potential changes to their policies, passengers should directly consult Carnival Cruise Line’s official resources or contact their customer service.

Carry-On Weight Limits

For carry-on bags on a Carnival Cruise, passengers are usually permitted one piece of hand luggage with them onboard.

While there is no strict weight limit, it is advisable not to pack excessively heavy luggage bags as you will be responsible for carrying your carry-on throughout embarkation day until your stateroom is accessible.

Keeping your carry-on light ensures convenience during travel days and minimizes strain on yourself.

Carnival Cruise Luggage Size-3

Carry-On Luggage Size Limit on Carnival Cruise

Dimensions and weight restrictions.

Carnival Cruise sets specific size and weight limits for carry-on bags to ensure smooth boarding processes.

The maximum dimensions allowed for carry-on luggage are typically 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches.

This size restriction ensures that your luggage bags fit easily into the overhead compartments or under the bed in your stateroom.

When preparing your carry-on bag for a Carnival Cruise, it’s crucial to adhere to any size and weight restrictions to avoid any inconveniences during boarding.

By following these guidelines closely, you can ensure that your luggage bag meets the cruise line’s requirements and make your embarkation process hassle-free.

Types of Items Allowed

While packing your carry-on bag for a Carnival Cruise, remember that certain items are essential to have with you onboard.

These include travel documents like passports and boarding passes, medications you may need during the journey, valuables such as jewelry or electronics, a change of clothes in case your checked luggage is delayed in reaching your stateroom, any other necessities like toiletries or snacks, and a bag.

Ensuring you pack these important items, luggage bag and board, in compliance with the size restrictions set by Carnival Cruise allows you easy access to them throughout your journey.

It’s always wise to keep valuable or essential items, like board, close at hand rather than risking them being separated from you until later in the day when all guests’ checked baggage has been delivered.

Benefits of Packing Essentials

Packing essential items, including board games, within the specified size limits of a carry-on bag brings several benefits while cruising with Carnival.

Having important documents readily available means smoother check-in procedures upon arrival at port terminals.

Moreover, having spare clothing can be convenient if you wish to freshen up after traveling before exploring the ship while waiting for dinner reservations.

Luggage Check-In Process on Carnival Cruise

When you arrive at the port for your Carnival Cruise, you will need to check in your luggage before boarding the ship.

This process involves handing over your bags to the cruise staff, who will then deliver them to your stateroom later in the day.

Baggage service is available to assist passengers with their belongings during embarkation.

Carnival Cruise has specific rules regarding luggage size, so it’s crucial to adhere to these guidelines when packing.

Before checking in your bags, ensure they are properly labeled with your name and cabin number. This step is essential as it helps crew members deliver your luggage accurately and efficiently once onboard.

Importance of Labeling Your Luggage

Labeling your luggage correctly can prevent mix-ups and delays in receiving your bags onboard.

Imagine if all suitcases looked alike; without proper labeling, identifying which bag belongs to whom would be a daunting task for both passengers and crew members.

Properly labeled luggage streamlines the process, making sure that each bag reaches its rightful owner promptly upon arrival in their stateroom.

Labeling serves as a security measure by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to specific cabins based on matching names and cabin numbers on luggage tags provided during check-in.

Tips for Efficient Check-In Experience

  • Pack Smart : Be mindful of what you pack; avoid bringing prohibited items or exceeding weight limits.
  • Arrive Early : To avoid long lines and ensure a smooth check-in experience, arrive at the port early.
  • Have Documents Ready : Prepare all necessary boarding documentation beforehand for quick processing.
  • Follow Security Measures : Be aware of security screening procedures; cooperate with staff during inspections.
  • Stay Organized : Keep important documents handy throughout embarkation day for easy access when needed.

Bringing Drinks and Snacks on a Carnival Cruise

Beverage and snack policies.

Carnival Cruise Line has specific policies regarding bringing drinks and snacks onboard.

Passengers are allowed to bring one 750ml bottle of wine or champagne per person, while the limit for non-alcoholic beverages is up to 12 standard-sized cans or cartons.

Guests can pack items like chips, cookies, nuts, granola bars, and other pre-packaged goodies.

Passengers should avoid carrying any homemade food items or perishables when boarding a Carnival cruise ship.

It’s crucial to adhere strictly to these regulations to prevent any issues during the luggage check-in process at the port.

By following these guidelines, travelers can ensure a smooth start to their vacation without facing delays or having items confiscated.

Packing Tips for Compliance

To comply with Carnival Cruise regulations when packing drinks and snacks, passengers should prioritize convenience and practicality.

Utilizing space-efficient containers for beverages like water bottles or sodas helps maximize luggage capacity while staying within the limits set by the cruise line.

Using resealable bags for snacks not only keeps them fresh but also makes them easily accessible during the trip.

When organizing your stateroom before embarkation day on a Carnival cruise ship, consider keeping all permitted drinks and snacks in one designated area of your luggage for quick retrieval during security checks.

This method ensures that you can present these items promptly if requested by crew members without causing unnecessary delays in boarding procedures.

Prohibited Items on a Carnival Cruise

List of prohibited items.

On a Carnival Cruise, there are certain items that passengers are not allowed to bring onboard. These include weapons, illegal drugs, and flammable materials.

The cruise line prohibits these items for the safety and security of all guests.

Passengers are also not permitted to bring along their own irons, coffee makers, or candles due to fire hazards they may pose.

Any item that could potentially disrupt the peace and enjoyment of other travelers is strictly forbidden.

Safety Reasons and Consequences

The prohibition of certain items on a Carnival Cruise is primarily driven by safety concerns.

Weapons can endanger the lives of everyone onboard, while illegal drugs can lead to legal issues as well as health risks for passengers.

Flammable materials pose a significant fire hazard in the confined spaces of a cruise ship.

Attempting to bring prohibited items onboard can have serious consequences including confiscation by security personnel or even being denied boarding altogether.

In more severe cases where dangerous items like weapons are involved, legal actions may be taken against the passenger responsible.

Allowed Essentials on a Carnival Cruise

Packing necessities.

Passengers on a Carnival cruise ship are allowed to bring essential items such as medications and toiletries.

It’s crucial to pack necessary medications for your health and wellbeing during the trip. Toiletries like toothpaste, shampoo, and sunscreen can enhance your comfort onboard.

Bringing these essentials ensures that you have access to what you need without having to purchase them at potentially higher prices onboard.

Remember that certain restrictions apply regarding the amount of liquids or gels you can carry, so it’s essential to check these rules before packing.

Efficient Packing Tips

When preparing for your cruise vacation, consider packing efficiently within the size and weight restrictions set by the cruise line.

Opt for travel-sized containers for toiletries to save space in your luggage. Roll clothes instead of folding them to maximize space utilization.

To avoid any issues with security or additional fees due to exceeding luggage limits, weigh your bags beforehand.

Make sure you adhere to both the maximum weight limit per bag and the number of bags allowed per passenger. By packing smartly within these guidelines, you can enjoy a hassle-free embarkation process.

Alcohol and Cigar Policies on a Carnival Cruise Ship

Bringing alcohol onboard.

Passengers are allowed to bring one 750 ml bottle of alcohol per person when boarding a Carnival Cruise ship.

This can be wine or champagne, but not spirits. However, any other alcohol brought onboard will be confiscated until the end of the cruise.

Purchasing drinks from the ship’s bars is the norm. The prices may vary depending on what you order – cocktails, beers, or wines.

Consuming Personal Alcohol

Carnival Cruise Line has specific policies regarding the consumption of personal alcohol onboard their ships, designed to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all passengers.

Guests are permitted to bring one bottle of wine or champagne per person (up to 750ml) in their carry-on luggage at the beginning of the voyage.

This allowance is strictly for in-cabin consumption. If guests wish to enjoy their bottle in one of the dining areas, a corkage fee is applied.

It’s important to note that aside from this allowance, Carnival prohibits the carrying on of other alcoholic beverages, including beer and spirits, at embarkation.

Attempts to smuggle additional alcohol onboard can result in confiscation and, in some cases, further action by the cruise line.

For those looking to enjoy alcohol beyond what is personally brought on board, Carnival offers a variety of bar settings and drink packages that can be purchased, catering to a wide range of preferences.

These packages often prove to be economical for guests planning to consume multiple drinks throughout their cruise.

Understanding and adhering to Carnival’s alcohol policy ensures a harmonious onboard atmosphere, allowing all guests to enjoy their vacation safely and responsibly.

Designated Smoking Areas

Carnival Cruise ships have designated smoking areas for cigars that passengers must adhere to strictly. These zones are usually located in outdoor spaces like certain decks or specific parts of open-air venues onboard.

For those who enjoy smoking cigars while cruising at sea, these designated  smoking areas  provide an opportunity to indulge without disturbing non-smokers around them.

Carnival Cruise Luggage Size-3

Understanding Baggage Fees on Carnival Cruises

Carnival Cruise Line does not impose luggage fees for the standard luggage guests bring onboard.

Passengers are generally allowed to bring a reasonable amount of baggage without facing any fees, with guidelines stipulating that each guest can bring no more than two pieces of checked luggage, each weighing no more than 50 pounds (22.68 kg), and one carry-on bag, within the size limits typically enforced by airlines for overhead storage.

However, there are restrictions and fees for certain other services related to luggage.

For instance, if a guest chooses to utilize the Fly2Fun program, which coordinates air travel to the cruise port, any airline-imposed luggage fees would still apply. Similarly, services like laundry or dry cleaning onboard come with additional charges, but these are not fees for luggage itself.

It’s also worth noting that while Carnival is generous with its luggage policy, guests are advised to pack thoughtfully to ensure they can comfortably manage their belongings and to adhere to security and safety guidelines, especially regarding prohibited items.

For the most accurate and current information, passengers should review Carnival’s official guidelines before packing for their cruise.

What to Wear on a Carnival Cruise

You’ll find that on Carnival Cruise what to wear is a bit more casual and fun than on other cruise lines. When you’re on Carnival what to pack for day and evening doesn’t need to be super fancy unless you want to get dressed up. There are a few Carnival Cruise dress code rules such as no shorts, flip-flops, cut-off/ripped jeans, caps or sleeveless shirts for men for the main dining room and no bathing suits or bare feet in the buffet.

Ideas for Carnival Cruise outfits:

  • Cruise casual day – Around the ship, you can wear bathings suits + coverups, shorts & tees, sundresses, basically any comfortable casual clothes.
  • Cruise casual evening – On non-formal nights in the main dining area you can wear sundresses, jeans & a nice tunic or vest top for women or short-sleeved shirt for men, or chinos and a polo shirt. You might want to plan on having one all white outfit as there’s often a white party one night.
  • Cruise elegant – If you’re wondering what to wear on formal night on Carnival Cruise you should picture yourself going out for a nice dinner at the minimum. You can wear anything from a nice sundress, up to a a full evening dress, but a cocktail dress is ideal. Unlike other cruise lines, Carnival has some different rules regarding what you can and can’t bring.

When it comes to packing for your Carnival Cruise, you’ll be pleased to know that there are no restrictions on the number of bags you can bring.

However, it’s important to note that there are specific weight and size limits that you’ll need to adhere to.

By following these requirements, you’ll ensure a smooth and hassle-free embarkation process.

Be sure to review Carnival’s guidelines before packing your bags to avoid any potential issues. (We got you covered there! Just keep reading…)

How Many Bags Can You Take On A Carnival Cruise?

Image of Opened Suitcase - Cruise Ship Luggage

Carnival Cruise Line does not have a specific limit on the number of bags you can bring on your cruise. You are allowed to bring as many bags as you need for your trip.

However, there are weight and size restrictions that you must follow for every bag you bring.

Firstly, your bags must not exceed 50 pounds in weight, and secondly, they must be small enough to pass through the x-ray machine at security checkpoints.

Additionally, Carnival suggests that your bags should be compact enough to fit under the bed in your stateroom.

Also, each passenger is allowed to bring one carry-on bag , which must be able to fit through a standard airport security scanner. Carnival recommends that you pack all your essential items, such as medication, travel documents, and valuables, in your carry-on bag.

Is There A Weight Limit For Luggage On A Carnival Cruise?

It’s important to keep in mind that each bag you bring on your Carnival cruise must weigh less than 50 pounds (22kg) for the safety of porters who will be handling your luggage.

If you’re planning on bringing more than this weight limit, consider splitting your items into multiple smaller bags to make it easier for porters to handle them. This will help ensure that your luggage arrives at your cabin in a timely and safe manner.

If you’re flying to join your cruise, it’s crucial to be aware of any luggage weight restrictions that the airline may have.

Many airlines have weight and size restrictions on checked bags, and fees may apply if your bags exceed these limits.

Additionally, some airlines may have restrictions on the number of bags you can check, so it’s best to check with your airline before you pack to avoid any surprises at the airport.

Are There Baggage Fees On Carnival Cruises?

One of the great things about cruising with Carnival is that there are no baggage fees for the luggage you bring on board. This means that you can pack as much as you need without worrying about additional charges.

As long as each bag is 50lb (22 kg) and under, you can bring them on board for free.

However, it’s essential to note that if you’re flying to the port, you may still incur baggage fees from the airline for the bags you bring on the plane.

It’s important to keep in mind that airlines often have strict weight and size limits for checked bags, and fees may apply if your bags exceed these limits.

To avoid any unexpected fees, it’s always a good idea to pack as light as possible and to check with your airline before your flight to see if any fees apply to your luggage.

If you’re concerned about packing light, consider planning your outfits ahead of time and packing versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched.

You can also take advantage of Carnival’s laundry and dry-cleaning services to freshen up your clothes during your cruise.

By packing smart and planning ahead, you can ensure a stress-free and cost-effective travel experience.

How To Measure Luggage For A Carnival Cruise

Three Suitcases

When preparing for a Carnival Cruise, it’s important to ensure that your luggage meets the size requirements set by the cruise line.

Here are the simple steps to measure your luggage for a Carnival Cruise:

  • Measure the height of your luggage from the bottom of the wheels or feet to the top of the extended handle.
  • Measure the width of your luggage from the widest point, typically the side pockets or bulges.
  • Measure the depth of your luggage from the front to the back of the bag.
  • Add all three measurements together to get the total linear inches of your luggage.

Carnival Cruise Line allows each guest to bring up to two pieces of luggage, each with a maximum size of 16 inches x 24 inches x 30 inches (40.64 cm x 60.96 cm x 76.2 cm) , and a maximum weight of 50 pounds (22.68 kg) per piece.

Any luggage exceeding these size and weight limits will not be allowed on board.

Can You Carry Your Own Luggage on a Cruise?

Yes, you can typically carry your own luggage on a Carnival cruise, including onto the ship.

This can be a convenient option, as it allows you to have greater control over your luggage and ensure that it stays with you until you can safely lock it in your cabin.

However, it’s important to note that carrying your own bags can require some extra effort on your part, especially if there are no porters available to assist you.

You may need to transport your bags up and down narrow hallways and multiple stairways, and elevators may not be available while the crew completes embarkation day tasks.

To make the process easier, consider packing lighter and using luggage with wheels or straps for easy transport.

Additionally, you can take advantage of Carnival’s luggage valet service, which allows you to check your bags at the port and have them delivered directly to your cabin, eliminating the need to carry your bags onto the ship.

Overall, whether you choose to carry your own bags or use the luggage valet service, it’s important to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of your luggage during your Carnival cruise.

Does The “3-1-1” Liquids Rule Apply To Cruises?

3-1-1 Liquids

The “3-1-1” liquids rule that is enforced by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) is specifically for flights and does not apply to cruise ships. Unlike air travel, there are no restrictions on the amount of liquids, gels, or aerosols that you can bring onboard a Carnival cruise ship.

This means that you can bring full-sized containers of shampoo, hairspray, or toothpaste from home without worrying about the “3-1-1” rule. However, it’s still important to pack these items carefully to avoid spills or leaks during transit.

While there are no specific restrictions on liquids for cruise travel, it’s always a good idea to check with Carnival’s website or contact them directly for any guidelines on what is and isn’t allowed in your luggage.

Prohibited Items on a Cruise

Cruise lines have specific guidelines on items that are prohibited on board for safety reasons. Some of the common items that are not allowed on a cruise include:

  • Illegal drugs or substances
  • Firearms, ammunition, explosives or other weapons
  • Hoverboards, Segways, and other personal transportation devices
  • Candles, incense, and any other open flames
  • Heating elements such as hot plates, coffee makers, and toasters
  • Drones or other remote-controlled flying devices
  • Scuba tanks, spearguns, and other diving equipment (unless approved by the cruise line)
  • Large coolers and other bulky items

In addition to the above, cruise lines also prohibit certain items that may pose a health or safety risk, such as certain types of food, medical equipment, and hazardous materials. It’s important to check with your specific cruise line for a full list of prohibited items before you pack for your trip.

What Happens If I Bring Something That I’m Not Supposed To?

If you bring something that is prohibited on a cruise, the item may be confiscated by the security team during the boarding process or during any inspection that takes place during the cruise.

Depending on the nature of the item, you may be asked to dispose of it or it may be held in a safe location on the ship until the end of the cruise. For example, if you bring alcohol on board, it may be held until the end of the cruise, and returned to you before you disembark.

If the item is illegal, such as drugs or weapons, the cruise line will turn it over to the appropriate authorities and you may face legal consequences.

It’s important to review the list of prohibited items provided by your cruise line before packing and to make sure that you comply with all rules and regulations. If you have any questions or concerns about a specific item, it’s always best to contact the cruise line directly for clarification.

Can I Bring Alcohol In My Bags When Boarding?

With the exception of embarkation day, guests are not allowed to bring alcoholic beverages on board .

However, during embarkation day, guests who are 21 years of age or older are permitted to bring one 750-ml bottle of unopened and sealed wine or champagne per person in their carry-on luggage.

Bringing bottled water, sodas, and other non-alcoholic beverages on board is not allowed.

However, guests can bring a limited amount of non-alcoholic beverages such as sparkling water, sodas, juice, and milk that are packaged in cans or cartons on embarkation day.

These items must be packed in the guest’s carry-on luggage and should not exceed a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 12 ounces (approximately 350 ml) or less per person.

It’s important to note that all alcoholic beverages, as well as non-alcoholic beverages that do not meet the exceptions mentioned above, are strictly prohibited in both checked and carry-on luggage.

Any such items found during security checks will be confiscated and discarded, and no compensation will be provided.

Will My Bags Be Searched On A Cruise Ship?

Yes, your bags will be subject to security screening when boarding a Carnival cruise ship. This is a standard procedure for all cruise lines to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members.

The security team will scan your bags using X-ray machines and may conduct physical inspections if necessary. They will be looking for any prohibited items such as weapons, illegal drugs, alcohol, or other items that may pose a risk to the safety and security of the ship and its passengers.

How Much To Tip Cruise Luggage Porters

The recommended tip amount for cruise luggage porters is $2-$3 per bag.

For example, if you have two bags, you could tip the porter $4-$6. It’s important to have cash on hand to tip the porter directly as they are not allowed to accept tips added to your onboard account.

It’s also a good idea to have your bags tagged with the cruise line luggage tags before handing them over to the porter. This will help ensure that your bags are properly identified and delivered to your stateroom once you board the ship.

Overall, tipping is a personal decision, and you can adjust the amount based on the level of service you receive or your budget.

But as a general guideline, tipping the cruise luggage porters is considered a standard practice in the cruise industry.

Carnival Luggage Tags

The luggage tags provided by Carnival will assist the ship’s porters in delivering your luggage directly to your stateroom.

Once you have completed the online check-in for your Carnival cruise, you’ll receive personalized luggage tags along with your electronic documents.

These tags can be accessed on the following website: www.carnival.com/BookedGuest

You should print out your luggage tags at home. Black and white is fine – you don’t need to print Carnival luggage tags in colour.

Before you arrive at the port you should fasten your luggage tags to your baggage. If you don’t have enough tags, don’t worry, you can get extra ones from the curbside porters.

If the cabin number on your luggage tag says TBA, the porters will retag your luggage with the correct cabin number.

What To Put In Your Carry-On Bag

Passport in Luggage

It’s always a good idea to pack a carry-on bag with the essential items that you may need before your checked luggage arrives in your stateroom.

Here are some suggestions for what to put in your carry-on bag for a cruise:

  • Travel documents: This includes your passport or other identification, cruise tickets, boarding passes, and any other important travel documents.
  • Medications: Any prescription medications or other essential over-the-counter medications should be packed in your carry-on bag.
  • Valuables: Any valuable items such as jewelry, cash, and electronics should be kept in your carry-on bag.
  • Change of clothes: It’s a good idea to pack a change of clothes, including swimwear and comfortable shoes, in case your checked luggage is delayed or lost.
  • Toiletries: Pack a small bag with travel-sized toiletries, such as toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, and any other personal hygiene items you may need.
  • Entertainment: Pack a book, e-reader, or tablet, and headphones to keep you entertained during the embarkation process.
  • Snacks and water: Pack some snacks and a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated and avoid purchasing expensive snacks on board.

Remember that carry-on bags are subject to security screening, so it’s important to check the policies for prohibited items before packing your bag.

It’s also a good idea to label your carry-on bag with your name and contact information in case it gets misplaced or lost during embarkation.

Can You Bring Snacks On A Carnival Cruise?

You can bring pre-packaged and unopened food and snacks on your Carnival cruise.

However, homemade food is not permitted on board the ship due to safety and hygiene reasons. Candy and potato chips are examples of pre-packaged snacks that are allowed on board.

It’s important to note that any fresh produce, meats, or dairy products are not allowed to be brought on board the ship.

The cruise line offers a variety of dining options and meal services, so you won’t go hungry while on your cruise.

Additionally, it’s recommended that you pack your snacks in your carry-on luggage, as checked luggage may not be accessible until later in the day.

Can You Bring Soda On A Carnival Cruise?

On a Carnival cruise, each guest is permitted to bring a 12-pack of soda in cans or cartons up to 12 ounces (350ml) in size. Alternatively, you may also bring other non-alcoholic beverages like sparkling water, juice, or milk.

The beverages should also be in their original, unopened packaging for safety and security reasons.

If you exceed the 12-can limit, any additional beverages will be confiscated and discarded by the cruise line.

Can You Bring Bottled Water On A Carnival Cruise?

Bottled water is not allowed to be brought on board a Carnival cruise. However, you have the option to purchase a package of 12 bottles of water which will be delivered to your stateroom for a fee of $4.95.

If you require distilled water for medical reasons or for your baby, you may bring it in your carry-on luggage or purchase it from room service for $3.00 per gallon. It’s recommended that you pack the distilled water in its original packaging and label it clearly for ease of identification.

Can You Bring Wine On A Carnival Cruise?

Adults (21 years and older) on a Carnival cruise are allowed to bring one 750ml bottle of wine or champagne per person to be consumed in their stateroom.

Make sure to pack this bottle of wine in your carry-on luggage.

Can You Bring Vapes On A Carnival Cruise?

Vape pens are permitted on board Carnival cruise ships, but it’s important to note that vaping is treated the same as smoking.

This means that you can only use your vape pen in designated smoking areas and not in your stateroom or on your balcony.

It’s important to respect the designated smoking areas on board and to follow all posted signs and regulations.

Vaping in non-designated areas or violating the cruise line’s smoking policies can result in disciplinary action.

Additionally, it’s important to pack your vape pen and any associated accessories in your carry-on luggage, as they are not allowed in checked luggage.

It’s also recommended to bring enough supplies for the duration of your cruise, as you will not be able to find replacement items on board.

Can You Bring Weed On A Carnival Cruise?

Carnival Cruise Line strictly prohibits the possession and use of marijuana of all kinds, including medical marijuana with a prescription and CBD, on board their ships.

This policy is in line with federal and international laws, as well as the cruise line’s own regulations.

Passengers found in possession of marijuana or any other illegal substances will face serious consequences, including disembarkation at the next port of call and possible legal action.

It’s important to note that even if you have a prescription for medical marijuana, it is not allowed on board Carnival cruise ships.

Passengers with medical conditions requiring the use of medication should make sure to bring enough supplies to last the duration of their cruise and to check with the cruise line’s policies on bringing medication on board.

Can You Bring Cigars On A Carnival Cruise?

Similar to cigarettes and vapes, cigars and tobacco pipes can be brought on board Carnival cruise ships, and there are designated smoking areas where they can be enjoyed.

However, these areas are typically more limited compared to areas where cigarette smoking is allowed.

Can You Bring A Drone On A Carnival Cruise?

As of May 2022, Carnival Cruise Line has implemented a complete ban on drones on their ships. Previously, guests were allowed to bring drones in their luggage to use outside of the ship and port area.

However, now it is required that guests check in their drones with the Chief Security Officer.

This means that guests are no longer permitted to use drones for photography or any other purposes while on board a Carnival cruise ship. Any drones found on board will be confiscated and held until the end of the cruise.

Carnival Luggage Tags: What You NEED To Know

Embarking on a Carnival cruise is an exciting adventure, and ensuring your luggage reaches your cabin safely is a crucial part of the journey. Carnival’s luggage tags play a pivotal role in this process. Think of them as your bags’ ticket to a smooth sailing experience. Let’s delve into the essentials of these tags and make your cruise preparation as breezy as the ocean winds.

Fold them as indicated, making sure the barcodes and cabin numbers are visible. Slide the folded tag into a protective holder (if you have one) and attach it securely to your bag’s handle. You can, but there’s a catch. Coolers should not exceed 12x12x12 inches in size, and they’re only allowed for storing non-alcoholic beverages, medications, or other special needs.

Can you bring your own cup on a Carnival cruise?

Certainly! Bringing your own cup or travel mug can be a great way to enjoy your favorite beverages on the go. Whether it’s for your morning coffee or staying hydrated by the pool, a personal cup adds a touch of home to your cruise experience. Just ensure it’s clean and empty when boarding.

Can you bring a vape on a Carnival cruise?

Yes, you can bring your vape or e-cigarette. However, Carnival has designated areas for vaping, and it’s essential to use them to ensure the comfort of all passengers. Remember, vaping in your cabin or on your balcony is strictly prohibited.

Can you bring a fan on a Carnival cruise?

Absolutely! If you prefer a little extra breeze in your cabin, you’re welcome to bring a small, portable fan. It’s a thoughtful way to ensure your comfort, especially if you’re sensitive to room temperatures.

Can you bring an iron on a Carnival cruise?

Safety first! For fire safety reasons, personal irons are not allowed on Carnival cruises. However, the ship provides ironing rooms on each deck for guests’ convenience. Alternatively, you can also request laundry services that include ironing.

Can you bring a steamer on a Carnival cruise?

Just like irons, personal steamers are not permitted due to safety concerns. But don’t fret! The ship’s laundry services are there to ensure your outfits remain wrinkle-free and cruise-ready.

Can you bring a corkscrew on a Carnival cruise?

While you might want to open that bottle of wine you brought, it’s best to leave your corkscrew at home. If needed, the ship’s staff will be happy to assist you in opening your bottle. Plus, there’s always the option of using the ship’s corkscrews in dining areas.

Can you bring a pocket knife on a Carnival cruise?

For the safety of all passengers, sharp objects, including pocket knives, are not allowed onboard. It’s always a good idea to check Carnival’s prohibited items list before packing to ensure a smooth boarding process.

Can you bring a drone on a Carnival cruise?

Drones are a no-go on Carnival cruises. While they might be great for capturing scenic views, for privacy and safety reasons, drones are not permitted onboard or to be used during excursions.

Can you bring weed on a Carnival cruise?

Regardless of its legal status in certain regions, marijuana (recreational or medicinal) is strictly prohibited on Carnival cruises. It’s essential to respect international maritime laws and the ship’s policies to ensure a hassle-free voyage.

What can you not bring on a Carnival cruise?

While Carnival cruises are all about relaxation and fun, there are certain items that are a no-go for the safety and comfort of all passengers. Here’s a list of things you should leave at home:

  • Firearms & Ammunition: Even if you have a permit, these are strictly prohibited.
  • Illegal Drugs: This includes recreational or medicinal marijuana, regardless of its legal status in your home country.
  • Alcohol: Apart from the allowed wine or champagne, other alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
  • Candles & Incense: Anything with an open flame is a fire hazard.
  • Household Appliances: This includes items like irons, coffee makers, and hot plates.
  • Drones: For privacy and safety reasons, leave your drones at home.
  • Sharp Objects: Items like scissors (longer than 4 inches), knives, and other sharp tools are not allowed.

Remember, it’s always best to check Carnival’s official prohibited items list before packing. It ensures a smooth boarding process and a hassle-free vacation.

What to put in your carry-on bag

Starting your cruise on the right foot means having essential items in your carry-on. Here’s a handy checklist:

  • Travel Documents: Passport, boarding pass, and any necessary visas.
  • Medications: Always keep these close, along with any necessary prescriptions.
  • Valuables: Jewelry, electronics, and other valuables are safest with you.
  • Change of Clothes: In case your luggage gets delayed.
  • Toiletries: Basics like toothbrush, toothpaste, and any skincare essentials.
  • Snacks: While there’s plenty of food onboard, having a few snacks can be comforting.
  • Entertainment: A book, tablet, or any entertainment for the wait.
  • Chargers: For your phone, camera, or other devices.

Think of your carry-on as your cruise survival kit. It’s all about ensuring you have everything you need to enjoy the first few hours onboard.

Does Carnival cruise search your luggage?

Yes, for the safety of all passengers, Carnival conducts security screenings of all luggage, similar to airport procedures. This includes both carry-on and checked bags. The process ensures prohibited items are not brought onboard. If any prohibited items are found, they will be confiscated, and you may be contacted for further inspection. It’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the cruise line’s policies to ensure a seamless boarding experience.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for a Carnival cruise involves understanding the ins and outs of their luggage policies. From the generous “carnival cruise luggage limit” that allows passengers to bring two checked bags, to the specific items you can and cannot bring onboard, being informed ensures a smooth sailing experience.

Whether you’re pondering about packing snacks, drinks, or personal items, or curious about the security screenings, it’s all about striking a balance between comfort and compliance.

Remember, while Carnival aims to provide a relaxed and enjoyable voyage, safety and comfort for all passengers remain paramount.

So, as you gear up for your well-deserved getaway, ensure you’re well-acquainted with these guidelines. After all, a well-prepared traveler is a happy traveler. Bon voyage!

Carnival Cruise Packing List – Printable Checklist Included!

Lucky you! You’re off for some fun in the sun on a Carnival Cruise! My Carnival cruise packing list will help you get organized so you can be fully prepared and totally relaxed once you’re on board. Read through my post on what to pack for a Carnival Cruise which includes clothes, toiletries, footwear and all the other bits and pieces you’ll need on your trip.

I’ll give you lots of examples of  what to wear on a Carnival Cruise including some pics of outfits I wore on my recent Western Caribbean cruise on Carnival Breeze. (Our Carnival Breeze review and trip report is here.) I’ll also show you want to wear on Carnival Cruise formal night too so if you want to dress up you can. When you’re headed out on a Carnival Cruise what to pack is a breeze once you have read my post!

At the end of this post you can print out your own Carnival Cruise checklist so you can prepare and pack for your own trip. If you’re new to cruising in general or just new to Carnival what to pack might be a bit overwhelming but if you follow my checklist you’ll soon have it under control.

This Carnival Cruise packing checklist is for a warm-weather cruise. If you’re headed to Alaska, then you need to head over and read my Alaska Cruise Packing List . You can also read my other cruise packing posts on what to pack for a cruise and 12 mix & match cruise outfits you’ll love to wear ! If you’re interested in more Carnival Cruise tips you can read my post here.

What You'll Find in This Post

What to Wear on a Carnival Cruise

If you’re wondering what to wear on Carnival Cruise Lines , then relax. It’s actually pretty easy going on Carnival. Carnival Cruise attire is fun and casual for the most part.

If you’re headed out soon on a Carnival Cruise what to wear is pretty easily decided once you know what kind of activities you need to dress for. You’ll need the following types of outfits:

  • An embarkation outfit or travel outfit if you’re flying into port from out of town (smart casual, still nice for photos!)
  • Casual clothes to wear on board the ship and on shore excursions (shorts and t-shirts or sundresses)
  • Work out clothes for active excursions or for working out on board
  • Cruise casual dinner attire for non-formal nights (jeans and a tee or polo shirt for men, a sundress or flowy top or tunic & jeans for ladies)
  • Some smarter outfits for formal night (more on that below!)
  • And some swimwear of course!

Above are some examples of Carnival Cruise wear. These  Carnival Cruise outfits are pretty casual and fun as you can see. I’ve linked all the specific items in the “what to pack Carnival Cruise” section below. You can click on any of those links and order the specific items in the image above.

What to Wear on Carnival Cruise Formal Night

Formal night on Carnival Cruise Lines is more relaxed than on other cruise lines. You won’t see many people in a sport coat, let alone a tux or evening gown. Think of it as smart but relaxed and fun rather than formal. Men generally wear a collared shirt and maybe a tie with some slacks or chinos. Women tend to wear fun cocktail dresses or sundresses that they dress up with accessories and heels.

Our cruise on the Carnival Breeze went from Galveston and we did notice that some families did get really dressed up. Women were in full evening gowns with perfect hair and make up and men were in dark suits & ties. If you want to go all out and get dressed up that is totally up to you! I would just make sure you liaise with your entire travel group so you’re all at the same level of attire.

I’ll add in some examples of what to wear on Carnival Cruise formal night below. You can click on any of these images for a closer look. There are also some ideas in this cruise outfits post.

What to Pack for a Carnival Cruise

My Carnival packing list will show you exactly what to take on a Carnival Cruise. From clothes to footwear to electronics and all those other useful little things, once you’ve read through this list you’ll know what to bring on a Carnival Cruise.

Clothes for women:

  • T-shirts and tank tops x 5 – Pictured above in the image for casual clothes
  • Shorts or capri pants x 2 – If you don’t like wearing “short shorts” then Bermuda shorts or capri pants are a good option. These are the capri pants pictures above in the embarkation outfit. And these are the bermuda shorts pictured in the image for casual clothes.
  • Sundress x 2
  • T-shirt dress x 1
  • Maxi dress x 1-2 – This is the one pictured above under cruise casual dinner outfits.
  • Cocktail dress, jumpsuit or gown x 1-2 –  This is the dress pictured above under formal wear.
  • Jeans, palazzo pants or linen pants – One pair of long pants can be really useful. I like a pair of stretchy white jeans personally.
  • Tunic top or flowy evening top x 2 or 3 – Think of what you’d wear on a date night to a restaurant or out for a drink with friends and wear that to dinner over capri pants, jeans or linen pants. This is the one pictured above as an embarkation outfit.
  • Cardigan – A light cardigan is useful for the dining room in the evenings as the aircon can be quite cool
  • Kimono top – Works great over tank top and shorts in the day, to glam up a sundress for evening or as a pool cover up!
  • Work out clothes / active wear – If you plan on using the gym or doing any active excursions like zip lining you’ll need a tank top like this and workout shorts like this .
  • 10 pair of underwear
  • 3-4 bras – 1 white/ nude, one sports and one black evening works best for me.

Clothes for men:

  • Polo shirts
  • Short sleeved shirts
  • Dress shirts
  • Chinos or khakis
  • Sport coat or suit (optional) – I would only suggest you do this if your partner is getting dressed up for formal night, otherwise you’re fine without it on Carnival.
  • Light sweater
  • Work out clothes
  • 1o pair of underwear
  • Swim suits x 2 – Miraclesuit have shaping swimsuit which I love for tummy control. This is the one in the image above.
  • Swim cover up x 2 – Here are a couple of great swim suit cover ups or this one that is from the image pictured above.
  • UV rash vest
  • Wedges or heels – I prefer wedges for cruises because they’re more stable!
  • Boat shoes or loafer or dress shoes (men)
  • Aqua or water shoes – These are really useful for excursions where you’re active in the water or for beach days.

Accessories:

  • Sunglasses x 2 – One good pair and one cheap pair for wearing in the pool or ocean
  • Statement jewelry
  • Pashmina scarf
  • Light scarf

Electronics:

  • Waterproof phone case – This is the one I use and it’s very inexpensive. Works at the pool and beach and you can put your phone, cash and sail & sign card in it too.
  • GoPro or camera – A GoPro is a great camera for cruising. If you’re looking for a more traditional point and shoot camera that is also pool and beach-proof then this one by Panasonic is a good buy.
  • Laptop or iPad
  • Kindle – This one is waterproof so ideal for cruising!
  • Headphones – Folding ones like this are good for travel
  • All your chargers
  • Power strip – Your power strip must NOT have a surge protector on it. Here is a useful power strip for cruise travel that has no surge protection and also has USB charging ports so it’s easy to charge your devices.
  • Travel clock – Some people like to bring this as staterooms don’t have a clock, I just use my phone but if you’re having a phone-free vacation it is useful to have one of these in your stateroom.

Toiletries:

What to pack for Carnival cruise: Toiletries you’ll need.

Carnival cruise toiletries provided are shampoo, conditioner and body wash supplied in shower dispensers as well as a bar of hand soap. If you’re picky about the products you use it does plan to pack your own brands. Travel sized bottles will do for your 7 day Carnival cruise packing list, either buy mini versions of your favorites or decant them into GoToobs like these .

This post has a guide on what to pack on a Carnival cruise in your toiletries bag – Toiletries List for Travel.  I’ll leave it as a separate list to the main packing list because it’s quite lengthy but just make sure you bring at least a full sized bottle of sunscreen and after sun lotion like aloe vera gel. These are essential toiletries for cruising!

Sea Sickness Prevention:

Sea sickness prevention is essential when packing for a Carnival cruise. I bring the following on every cruise we take:

  • Essential oil blend to calm motion sickness
  • Ginger candy
  • Lysol disinfecting wipes – Give your cabin surfaces a good wipe down when you first arrive. Although they are cleaned thoroughly it always pays to disinfect your room to prevent against cruise bugs like norovirus.

A little seasickness prevention pack makes a nice gift for someone you’re cruising with also! You can also read this post with more tips on how to avoid getting sea sick on a cruise .

  • Wine – You can bring one bottle of wine per adult (750mL) which must be packed in your carry on luggage. You need to drink this in your room or at least pour it into a glass if you want to carry it to dinner. If you bring your own wine bottle to dinner, open or not, you’ll be charged a $15 corkage fee to consume it at your table. You cabin attendant can provide wine glasses for your room. If you are bringing a bottle of wine with you, it’s a good idea to pack it in a wine bottle protector sleeve.
  • Soda or water – Each person can bring 12 cans or cartons (12 oz or less) of soda, milk, juice or sparkling water on board in your carry on luggage when you embark.
  • Refillable water bottle – Collapsible ones like this are great for travel!
  • Travel coffee cup (like this fun cruise-themed one!!)

Travel Documents & Money:

  • Cruise documents and luggage tags – You need to print these out yourself!
  • Cruise luggage tag holders
  • Cash – Bring some US dollars for using in the port and some smaller bills for tipping for cabin attendant or dining room server on the last day of your cruise
  • Credit card
  • Wallet or purse
  • Driver’s License / ID
  • Travel wallet for organiser your travel documents

Other Things to Bring on a Carnival Cruise:

  • Lanyard for your Sail & Sign card
  • Post-it notes & pens – For leaving messages on your stateroom door for family in other cabins or writing a note to your cabin attendant. These  Post-it Pop-up Notes are handy.
  • Highlighters – For marking the activities your want to take part in on your Fun Times each day
  • Walkie talkie set – Great if you’re cruising with older kids who don’t want to be stuck with mom and dad all day
  • Tide to Go stain remover pen
  • Tide pods in a Ziploc bag – Just a couple in case you want to do laundry on board (Carnival has several laundry rooms on board their ships with washers, dryers and irons.)
  • Travel laundry sheets – For handwashing any delicates that you might want to re-wear on the cruise (there is a clothes line in your bathroom onboard!)

Carnival Cruise Luggage and How to Pack for a Carnival Cruise

Carnival packing rules.

Carnival cruise packing rules for the amount of luggage you can bring are as follows:

  • One suitcase for cruises of 3-5 days
  • Two suitcases for cruises of 6+ days
  • Carnival cruise suitcase size limits are   16 inches high by 24 inches wide (the length of the bag is not a factor) and weight limits are 50lbs per bag
  • All suitcases must be unlocked
  • If you have checked baggage, you must be checked in at least two hours before the ship’s departure time
  • Carnival cruise carry on size luggage is the same dimensions as for checked luggage but you must be able to manoeuvre through the queues with your carry on baggage and look after your carry on bag yourself until your stateroom is available which can take several hours. It is therefore better to just bring a tote bag, backpack or small wheeled suitcase as your carry on (as you would for airline travel).
  • Your checked luggage must be placed outside your stateroom door the evening before disembarkation if you want it taken off the ship by porters. You can opt to self carry your luggage off on the morning of disembarkation but you have to be able to fully manage your luggage yourself. It is a great idea to do this however as it means you can depart a lot earlier and not have to wait on board until your boarding group is called.

carnival 5 day cruise luggage

Carry On Bag on Embarkation Day

In your carry on bag for embarkation you will need to pack:

  • All your travel documents, wallet and phone
  • Valuables like your camera or iPad that you don’t want to leave in your checked luggage
  • Your swimsuit, pool cover up, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen so you can hit the pool on day one when you embark
  • A change of clothes with underwear (just in case your luggage goes missing!)
  • Any important medication
  • Book or Kindle
  • A water bottle and a snack for kids (sometimes checking in and boarding can take a loooong time!)

All this should fit easily into a backpack, tote bag or carry on suitcase. If you’re flying in to the port you’ll probably a suitcase for the things you need on the flight or the night before the cruise if you’re arriving early.

If you’re bringing trays of soda cans on board these must go in your carry on bag so I would suggest using a small wheeled suitcase for this so you’re not carrying them through the embarkation queue. It usually takes a minimum of one hour of queuing for security, document checks and boarding so make sure you can comfortably manage your Carnival cruise carry on.

Shore Excursion Bag

For shore excursions, assuming you’re off to the beach or doing something active, you should bring the following:

  • Swimsuit, pool cover up, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Watershoes or sneakers depending on your excursion
  • Carnival beach towel – These are provided in your stateroom and can be taken off the ship (but be sure to return them or you will be charged for replacing them!)
  • Water bottle
  • Wallet with cash in USD and Sail & Sign card
  • Waterproof phone pouch – These are the BEST thing for cruising! You can use your phone while it’s in the waterproof pouch so you can take photos at the beach or in the ocean without worrying about damaging your phone. We actually just tuck cash and our Sail & Sign cards into one of these waterproof case along with our phones if we are headed to the beach so we can avoid learning or valuables on the beach while we are in the ocean.
  • Camera – If you want to leave your phone at home or onboard and take a camera out and about the Olympus TG-4 is a great camera for cruising because it’s full waterproof and shockproof. GoPro cameras are also great for active cruise vacations.

Use the same backpack or tote bag you used for embarkation as your shore excursion bag or bring a foldable beach tote like this along in your cruise luggage.

We recommend a suitcase of around 24″ to 25″ for a single person or a couple traveling together and a suitcase of around 28″ to 30″ for a family sharing a suitcase. This is ample luggage capacity for a 7 night cruise. We have done cruises with only two carry on bags for our family of four in the past. If you pack strategically and follow my cruise packing checklist for Carnival that you can print below you will have no problems with a bag of this size.

As I mentioned above, there is a maximum weight limit of 50 lbs which should be ample allowance for your suitcase. Your suitcase needs to be no more than 16 inches deep by 24 inches wide across the base. It’s also a good idea to have a suitcase with four spinner wheels as they’re easier to manage, especially if you want to take your bags off the ship yourself on disembarkation day to save time.

Here are some suggested suitcases that meet these requirements:

Packing Cubes

Using packing cubes also make it easy to unpack when you arrive in your stateroom and organise your belongs. Just pop the cubes out of your suitcase and straight into a drawer or cupboard. Easy! You can read my complete guide on how to pack with packing cubes and which ones to buy for more information . I even have an instructional video on how to use them.

Hanging Toiletry Bag

A hanging toiletry bag is one of the ideals things to pack for a cruise, Carnival has hooks on the back of all the bathroom doors so you can just hang your bag and see your stuff without unpacking too much. Luggage FAQ for Carnival Cruises

With 23 ships and approximately 5 million passengers annually, it is no surprise that Carnival Cruise Line is one of the world’s most popular cruise lines. Carnival gained popularity over the past several decades by branding itself as the fun ship. Their cruises are often child friendly and affordable making them a desirable option among cruisers.

With so many passengers every year, Carnival knows how to handle luggage. Like many other cruise lines Carnival has its own set of luggage limitations. If you have decided to book your next cruise with Carnival it is important that you know exactly what you can and cannot bring with you onboard.

Carnival Cruise Line Luggage Policy

Carnival Cruise Line has provided a set of Carnival Help Pages where they outline their luggage restrictions and prohibited items. They recommend one checked bag per person for cruises ranging from 3-5 days. For cruises 6 days or longer, Carnival recommends a maximum of two checked bags per person. Carnival recommends one carry-on per person. Carry-ons should contain important documents, medications, and valuables.

Remember that you are responsible for your own luggage onboard Carnival Cruise Lines. There is no holding area for your bags, they remain in the stateroom with you. Staterooms and cabins are notoriously small, so choosing the right luggage to bring onboard the cruise ship is important. Consider packing light, using nesting suitcases, and bringing collapsible bags to ensure that you are not constantly tripping over your luggage.

Is There a Luggage Weight Limit on Carnival Cruises?

Yes, the weight limit for checked bags on Carnival Cruises is 50 pounds.

What Size Luggage Can I Carry on Carnival Cruise?

Carry-on luggage is subject to screening via an x-ray screening machine. Screening machines have a limit on the size of bag they can screen. Carnival limits checked bags to 16” in height x 24” in width. The length of the bag does not matter but keep in mind, you will be carrying it on board. Staterooms are not always available immediately upon boarding so you may have to hold your carry-on luggage for some time before you will be allowed access to your room.

For expedited check-in and faster access to your cabin, consider purchasing Carnivals Faster to the Fun package . This gives you special benefits when it comes to security, check-in, and boarding. The service ranges in price depending on the number of days for the cruise.

How to Measure Luggage for Carnival Cruise

For the most accurate luggage measurement and weight, pack the bag first. Using a luggage scale is the easiest way to get a weight reading for your luggage. A standard tape measure can be used to measure the dimensions of your suitcase. Follow these steps to measure your cruise luggage at home:

  • Place the bag on the floor standing upright. Push any telescoping handles all the way down. Measure the height of the bag from the ground to the top of the bag.
  • Measure the width of the bag from the left side of the bag across the front to the right side of the bag.
  • The depth is measured from the front of the bag across the side to the back.
  • Place the bag on a luggage scale to get the weight.

You can use the measurements and packed bag weight to ensure that your bag is within Carnival Cruise Line’s limit of 50 pounds per checked bag and 16” x 24” dimension for carry-on bags.

What is Carnival Luggage Express?

Carnival Luggage Express is a program where Carnival will transfer your luggage from the ship to the airport for you. This service offering is limited to a maximum of 2 bags per person. A fee is assessed by Carnival to use this service. Carnival Luggage Express may or may not still be offered. It is recommended that you check directly with Carnival or your travel agent for more information on the availability Carnival Luggage Express program.

Carnival offers an Express Debark option for debarkation day where guests carry their own luggage off the ship. Otherwise, guests place their luggage outside of their cabins on the last night of the cruise. Luggage is collected and held for delivery upon debarkation.

There may be options for guests with physical disabilities that are unable to carry their own bags. Please check with the cruise ship for options.

How to Use Carnival Luggage Tags

Carnival luggage tags are used to identify your bags and deliver them to your stateroom. These are printed at home or at a copy shop and then attached to your luggage. These tags do not need to be printed in color. Attaching the luggage tags can be done with packing tape or a stapler but this is not the most secure method for attaching luggage tags and we do not recommend it. We suggest purchasing Carnival luggage tag holders for the most convenient and secure way to attach your Carnival Luggage Tags. Luggage tag holders are usually made of plastic and are waterproof, so you can be sure that your luggage tags are protected even when encountering rough weather conditions. These plastic luggage tags attach to your luggage via a plastic cord or metal ring. After printing the Carnival luggage tag at home, you can simply insert the printout into the luggage tag holder. It is convenient and secure. Additionally, Carnival luggage tag holders make it easier to attach new luggage tags for debarkation.

  • Alaska Cruise Packing List

  • Bahamas Cruise Packing List
  • Bermuda Cruise Packing List
  • Mediterranean Cruise Packing List

1. Government ID &/or Passports

The most important things to pack for your Carnival cruise are your government ID (driver’s license) and passport if applicable.

It’s a good idea to use a  passport wallet holder to keep organized. Here are 2 great options.

This one is so practical when travelling with a family, and will ensure that you don’t make the mistake of packing your passport in your luggage. This can result in being unable to board your cruise ship.

This passport holder is great for a single passport, is RFID protected and includes slots for credit cards and cash.

3. Proof of Vaccine & Test Results (no longer required for most cruises)

Make sure to check your cruise reservation and communication from Carnival or your travel agent , for your current travel requirements.

4. Carnival Luggage Tag Holders

Don’t forget to print out your Royal Caribbean cruise ship luggage tags and attach them to your luggage on embarkation day .

Since they are made of paper, I like to buy and use these Carnival cruise luggage tag holders which are reusable, sturdy and convenient.

5. Carry On Bag for Embarkation Day

Along with your checked luggage, be sure to pack a carry on bag with your first day essentials for embarkation day.

Some items to pack include medication , valuables, electronics and a bathing suit and cover up . It can take several hours until you get your luggage delivered to your cabin, so bringing on the items you may need is important.

This carry-on bag is roomy and expandable!

6. Credit Card

It’s a good idea to bring along at least one credit card when you travel. Even if you don’t plan to use it, a credit card is good for emergencies and there is it’s required.

7. Small Bills

Bring along some $1, $5 and $10 dollar bills on your cruise. I like to have some small bills handy from the time we get to the cruise terminal at embarkation to tip the porters, as well as to use for tipping for room service once on board.

It can be handy to have cash on hand when shopping for souvenirs at cruise ports as well.

8. Cruise Outfits

Carnival cruises are pretty fun and casual, so you don’t have to over stress about what to wear on a cruise .

Plan on relaxed clothing for daytime, like shorts, t-shirts or tank top, or a sundress for ladies. On a Caribbean cruise , you’ll likely spend a lot of time in a swimsuit and flip flops!

In the evening, you’ll need some cruise outfits for the dining room. Most nights the dress code will be casual or smart casual.

As an example, for men this can be a polo style shirt with pants or jeans. For ladies a casual dress or a pair of pants or dark jeans with a pretty top is perfect.

If you love to dress up or you have a special occasion to celebrate, you can wear elegant attire on Carnival’s formal night.

When making your cruise packing list, consider bringing an 80’s costume and even a Hawaiian shirt for an island theme.

14. Non-Alcoholic Beverages (small amount)

Carnival cruise passengers are able to bring a small amount of non-alcoholic beverages on board on embarkation day. The soda, juice or energy drinks must be in cans or carton (no plastic and glass bottles).

Carnival Cruise Luggage Limits, Rules & Restrictions in 2024

Going on a Carnival cruise? Make sure you know the luggage limits and restrictions before you start packing. Having the right information will ensure a smooth embarkation process.

In this detailed guide, I’ll cover everything you need to know about Carnival cruise luggage, including:

  • Number of bags allowed
  • Size and weight restrictions
  • Fees for extra or oversized bags
  • Carnival’s luggage tagging system
  • Items that are prohibited or restricted
  • Liquids policy (“3-1-1 rule”)
  • Alcohol and beverage allowances
  • Tips for cruise luggage porters

I’ll also answer frequently asked questions about bringing snacks, drinks, alcohol, and other items on a Carnival cruise.

How Many Bags Can You Take On A Carnival Cruise?

There is no set limit on the number of bags you can bring on a Carnival cruise. However, Carnival does provide the following luggage suggestions:

For cruises of 3-5 nights:

Carnival suggests packing 1 bag per person for shorter cruises of 3-5 nights. This helps keep the luggage light and manageable.

You can bring 1 carry-on plus 1 standard checked bag per person for smooth sailing on these quick getaway cruises.

For cruises of 6+ nights:

For longer cruises of 6+ nights, Carnival recommends no more than 2 bags per person .

This allows 1 carry-on plus up to 2 checked suitcases per passenger to accommodate your needs for a longer sailing.

While there is no set luggage limit per passenger, following Carnival’s bag suggestions will make embarkation and transportation easier.

The fewer bags you bring, the faster check-in and boarding will be.

What Is the Luggage Size Limit on Carnival Cruises?

For your suitcases and bags, Carnival has the following size restrictions:

carnival 5 day cruise luggage

  • Max dimensions: 140cm x 60cm x 40cm  – This is the maximum size allowed for standard checked bags. Measure carefully.
  • Max weight: 50 lbs per bag  – This is the weight limit per checked bag. Even though there is no overweight fee, it would be better to pack up to only 50 lbs, as it makes it easier for porters to carry the luggage safely.

Tip: Use Carnival’s printable luggage sizers during packing to avoid oversize surprises

Is there a weight limit for luggage on a Carnival cruise?

Carnival suggests each checked bag weigh 50 lbs (22 kg) or less for easier handling. However, there are no overweight luggage fees if your bags exceed this recommendation.

You can bring heavier luggage without incurring overage charges. Carnival does not restrict bag weight or charge fees for heavy bags.

Keep in mind airline limits may be more restrictive for your incoming flight. Make sure your bags meet airline size and weight rules first.

Also, consider dividing extremely heavy bags into lighter pieces out of courtesy to baggage handlers. But you won’t incur fees for heavier bags from Carnival.

The main thing is Carnival provides a 50 lb recommendation per bag, but does not enforce weight limits or charge for heavy luggage.

Tip: Use a luggage scale when packing to keep the weight of each bag under 50 lbs.

packing for cruise

Are There Baggage Fees On Carnival Cruises?

No, Carnival cruises have no checked baggage fees for bags that meet the airline size and weight limits for your flight.

Carnival does not charge for standard checked luggage within airline limits, including:

  • No fee for your 1st checked bag
  • No fee for your 2nd checked bag
  • No fees for additional bags

You can check as many airline-approved bags as needed with Carnival without incurring per-bag fees.

The only baggage costs would be any airline fees associated with your incoming flight if you exceed airline limits. But once at the cruise terminal, you can check bags with Carnival fee-free.

This makes packing for your Carnival cruise easy and budget-friendly. Bring what you need luggage-wise without extra fees.

What Is Carnival Luggage Tag?

Carnival provides each passenger with personalized luggage tags on embarkation day. These bar-coded tags make identifying and delivering your checked bags easy.

The tags will have your name, booking number, stateroom number, and sail date printed on them.

Attach 1 tag securely to each piece of checked luggage you want to be delivered directly to your stateroom on the ship. Don’t fold or bend the tags.

This streamlined system allows Carnival staff to efficiently sort and deliver thousands of passenger bags. Once onboard, your properly tagged bags will magically appear in your room.

luggage tag on cruise

Tip: Also, put your name and contact info inside each checked bag in case tags happen to fall off.

How Much To Tip Cruise Luggage Porters

When you arrive at the cruise terminal, luggage porters will take your checked bags to be loaded on the ship.

It’s standard practice to tip porters around $2 per bag handled in thanks for their assistance. For a family with the typical 2 bags each, tipping $8-10 total is suggested.

Porter tips are not included in your cruise fare. Cash tips are always appreciated if you have small bills handy. You can also tip porters using your Sail & Sign onboard account card.

loading luggage to cruise ship

Tip: Pack $20-$40 in small cash bills for tipping luggage porters, housekeeping, servers, and other cruise staff.

What You Can Bring On A Carnival Cruise

When packing for your Carnival cruise, refer to their “What to Pack” and “What Not to Pack” lists online for guidance.

Some common questions about permitted items:

Can you bring snacks on a Carnival cruise?

Yes, you can bring small quantities of snacks like crackers, chips, pretzels, protein bars , and cookies. Homemade baked goods and candy are allowed, too, within reasonable limit. Do not bring fresh fruits, vegetables, or uncooked meats onboard.

Tip: Pack non-perishable snacks in resealable bags or plastic containers.

Can you bring drinks on a Carnival cruise?

Non-alcoholic canned and bottled drinks like sodas, sparkling water, juice boxes, and bottled water are permitted. Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Tip: Fill a small soft cooler with allowed drinks for your stateroom.

Can you bring alcohol on a Carnival cruise?

Only at embarkation – Guests 21+ can bring 1 standard 750ml bottle of unopened wine or champagne in their carry-on when boarding. No beer, liquor, mini bottles, or additional wine can be brought onboard.

Tip: Purchase your drinks in ports or onboard shops/bars during your cruise.

Can you bring wine on a Carnival cruise?

Adults of legal drinking age (21+) can bring 1 factory-sealed 750 ml bottle of still wine or champagne in their carry-on bag at embarkation only. No sparkling wines, beers, liquor, or mini bottles are permitted.

The cruise ship scanner will detect alcohol if people try to sneak it onboard .

Tip: Wrap your bottle well to prevent breakage in transit.

Can you bring soda on a Carnival cruise?

Unopened canned or plastic bottled sodas and soft drinks can be brought onboard in carry-on bags. No glass containers are allowed.

Can you bring Red Bull on a Carnival cruise?

Red Bull and other energy drinks are allowed on Carnival cruises, but some guidelines exist around bringing them on board. Passengers can bring a reasonable, personal-use amount of Red Bull or other canned/bottled energy drinks in carry-on luggage.

Typically, up to 12 standard cans or 1-2 of the larger 24oz cans/bottles per person is considered a personal-use quantity.

Can you bring water on a Carnival cruise?

Bringing water on a Carnival cruise is allowed and encouraged. Passengers can pack factory-sealed bottled water, water filters, and reusable water bottles in carry-on luggage to stay hydrated.

Typically, up to 12 standard-size bottles per person are permitted. Water is screened at embarkation but allowed with no issues as long as it follows the carry-on guidelines. Having your water avoids having to purchase expensive bottled water onboard.

Can you bring a cooler on a Carnival cruise?

Personal coolers can be brought onto Carnival cruise ships, though there are guidelines to follow . The coolers must be soft-sided and no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches, fitting inside carry-on luggage.

Allowed contents include canned drinks, small snacks, toiletries, medication, and ice packs. However, alcohol and glass are prohibited inside coolers.

The coolers are screened at embarkation and can only be used inside passenger staterooms, not in public spaces. Following these rules allows guests the convenience of having extra beverages and snacks handy in their rooms.

Can you bring a vape on a Carnival cruise?

Carnival allows passengers to bring electronic cigarettes and vaping devices in carry-on luggage, though there are guidelines around their usage.

Vapes, e-cigarettes, and a reasonable personal supply of nicotine cartridges can be packed and brought on board.

However, these devices and liquids will be screened at the security checkpoint before boarding the ship.

Vaping is only permitted in designated outdoor areas of the ship, like certain open decks and casinos. It is prohibited in all indoor areas, including staterooms, due to smoke detection systems.

However, some cruise lines allow smoking on balconies .

Can you bring a fan on a Carnival cruise?

Small personal fans can be brought on Carnival cruises to make staterooms more comfortable, following specific guidelines. The fans must be compact and battery-powered, no larger than a desk fan, with covered blades for safety.

Fans can only be packed in carry-on luggage to be screened at embarkation security. They are meant for use only inside passenger staterooms, not in public areas. Battery-operated units are ideal since outlet access is limited on ships.

Can you bring an iron on a Carnival cruise?

Carnival does not allow passengers to bring their irons or ironing boards on cruises due to potential fire hazards and limited counter space in staterooms. The ship has ironing rooms that guests can utilize during their cruise.

Ironing rooms are located on various decks and complimentary for passengers. They provide irons, mini ironing boards, and steamers.

To avoid wait times, guests should visit ironing rooms earlier in the day as they get busier closer to dinner time when cruisers are getting dressed up.

Can you bring a steamer on a Carnival cruise?

Unfortunately, Carnival cruise lines do not permit passengers to bring any fabric or clothes steamers in their luggage or onboard their ships. This prohibition includes both handheld and upright garment steamers.

Carnival has restrictions on certain personal appliances with high wattage or heat output being brought onboard their cruises. Steamer units tend to draw a lot of electrical currents and have the potential to overload circuits. The steam they emit also poses a safety hazard in tight quarters.

Can you bring a pocket knife on a Carnival cruise?

Carnival Cruise Lines prohibits all guests from bringing knives onboard, including pocket knives. This ban on knives and sharp objects extends to even small folding knives and multi-tools. The only exceptions are safety razors and small eyebrow grooming scissors kept in your stateroom.

Can you bring a drone on a Carnival cruise?

Unfortunately, passengers are prohibited from bringing drones on Carnival cruises, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

This ban covers all passenger-owned drones regardless of size or features. It applies to both staterooms and any outdoor areas of the ship.

Prohibited Items on Carnival Cruise

Dangerous, illegal, or universally banned items are strictly prohibited on all Carnival cruises.

This includes firearms, weapons, recreational drugs, flammable items, alcohol over the limits, and more. Refer to Carnival’s “Not Allowed to Bring” list when packing.

Prohibited items found during security screening will be confiscated and not returned. This can also lead to denied boarding or disembarkation. Don’t risk it.

Tip: When in doubt if an item is allowed, contact Carnival ahead of time to avoid problems.

Does The “3-1-1” Liquids Rule Apply To Cruises?

The 3-1-1 liquids rule limits passengers to 3.4 ounce containers of liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes when going through airport security. All of these items must fit in one quart-sized plastic bag with 1 bag per passenger.

However, this rule was instituted by the Transportation Security Administration specifically for commercial air travel. It does not apply to cruise passengers boarding ships. Liquids rules at cruise terminals are much more relaxed.

But do keep in mind that the rule applies if you fly to the port.

Does Carnival Cruise search your baggage?

All checked bags go through security screening when loaded onto the cruise ship. This is done through X-ray scans and sometimes manual searches. This is the standard protocol for cruise lines to check for prohibited items.

scanning luggage

Carnival does reserve the right to conduct random inspections of any checked or carry-on bags at their discretion. These searches may be done by hand or using automated baggage scanners.

Carry-on bags are also subject to screening and inspection at any point during embarkation or debarkation. This is often done via X-ray scanners when passing through security checkpoints.

Can cruise scanners detect alcohol?

It’s recommended to avoid trying to conceal any banned or questionable items in bags. To avoid problems or delays, passengers should familiarize themselves with Carnival’s list of prohibited items and the baggage policy before sailing.

What to put in your carry-on bag?

  • Medications – Any prescription medications you need, over-the-counter meds, supplements, etc. Pack more than enough to last your trip in case of delays.
  • Valuables – Passport, wallet, keys, phone, laptop, camera, jewelry, etc. Keep anything you would hate to lose in your carry-on.
  • Chargers & batteries – For electronics, include backup/portable phone chargers.
  • Change of clothes – At least one full change of clothes and underwear in case your checked bag gets delayed.
  • Toiletries – Travel sizes of essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wash. Liquids must follow TSA rules.
  • Snacks – Pack some snacks that travel well and won’t spill, like protein bars, dried fruit, nuts.
  • Travel documents – Printed tickets, boarding passes, itinerary, visa/passport if needed during transit.
  • Entertainment – Books, e-reader, travel headphones, portable chargers for devices.
  • Other essentials – Eyeglasses/contacts, chapstick, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, face mask, pen.

The key is to pack light but include anything you need or couldn’t easily replace in your carry-on. Keep it organized and accessible.

Check airline rules on liquids and prohibited items. With the basics covered in your carry-on, you’re prepared for any situation! Let me know if you need any other tips.

What is the best way to get luggage tags for my Carnival cruise?

Carnival provides each guest with personalized barcode luggage tags delivered directly to their stateroom on embarkation day. Attach tags to your checked bags before dropping them off.

How early should I arrive at the cruise terminal before departure?

Arrive at the cruise terminal at least 3-4 hours before the scheduled boarding time to accommodate check-in, security, and boarding. This avoids stress and long lines.

Should I tip the porters who take my checked bags at the terminal?

Yes, tip porters are $2 per standard bag they handle for you at the terminal for good service. Cash is the most straightforward, but you can add tips to your Sail & Sign account, too.

What size checked bags are allowed on Carnival cruises?

The maximum size limit is 30 x 24 x 15 inches (length x width x height).

Can I store luggage with Carnival if my flight arrives before cruise embarkation?

Yes, Carnival offers secured luggage storage at the terminal so you can drop off bags early and go explore the port city stress-free before your cruise.

We hope this detailed guide provides everything you need to know for smooth sailings with your Carnival cruise luggage.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

How much luggage can I bring?

To help you plan, we suggest you limit your luggage to a maximum of one bag per person if you’re travelling on a cruise of 3-5 nights, and to no more than two bags per person, for cruises of 6 days or longer.

In addition, you must personally carry-on any boarding documentation (passports, Visas, I.D), valuables, medications and any items which require special handling.

To fit neatly in your stateroom, each bag should be no bigger than 140cm x 60cm x 40cm. Each checked suit case and carry-on suit case should not weigh more than 32kg.

Please note that airlines may have different luggage restrictions.

Luggage and Baggage Rules for Taking a Cruise (How Much Can I Bring?)

How much luggage can I bring on a cruise? Can I bring shampoo? Can I bring drinks or alcohol? What about food? Will my bags be searched?

If you’re a first-time cruiser, you might have a number of questions about what you can — and can’t — pack for a cruise. The good news? The rules surrounding cruise luggage are far simpler and more straightforward than what you’ll find on a flight .

Suitcase packed for a cruise

In fact, you can think of the rules surrounding your luggage as more similar to traveling to a hotel versus traveling on a flight.

Still, if you’re taking a cruise, chances are you’re going to pack a little more than a toothbrush. So you no doubt have a few questions about luggage and baggage on the ship.

We’ve rounded up answers to some of the most common questions…

In This Article...

How much luggage can I bring on a cruise?

The best news about packing is that there is no (reasonable) limit on how much you can bring on a cruise . Most cruise lines “encourage” or “suggest” each passenger to limit luggage to two suitcases, each one less than 50 pounds. In addition, you can also bring carry-on luggage (more on that in a moment).

While there are no strict restrictions on your checked baggage, you should keep a few common sense items in mind.

First, know that you have to get all your luggage to and from the cruise ship. If you are flying, that may mean extra fees for extra bags. And even if you are driving to the cruise terminal, you still have to carry (or arrange for someone else to carry) all that luggage.

We encourage people to pack reasonably. There is no harm in wearing the same thing twice during a cruise — many others will be doing just that. As well, every ship has laundry service if you need it.

If you are taking more than one piece of luggage and one carry-on to take a week-long cruise, then you are likely overpacking.

(Read:  12 Luggage Pieces Perfect For Your Next Cruise )

Are there baggage fees on cruises?

Unlike airlines, there are no baggage fees for the luggage you bring on a cruise. Bring what you want, as there is no extra charge.

That’s good news, but if you are flying to the port, remember that you could be charged by the airline for bags you bring on the plane. That’s another reason it’s smart to pack light if you can.

Are there restrictions on what I can bring?

Two bags taken on a cruise

Of course. You can’t bring weapons such as guns or long knives on board. If it’s even questionable (such as pepper spray), it’s best to just leave it at home. Scissors are also restricted.

More importantly, except for lighters, you can’t bring anything dealing with fire. Fire is the biggest risk on board a ship. For that reason, irons are restricted, as are candles and incense. Flammable liquids are also prohibited. If you think it could start a fire, it’s best to leave it at home.

Cruise lines also have restrictions on alcohol that you can bring on board. Most will let you bring some sort of wine or champagne, but only in small quantities. Beer or hard liquor are almost never allowed. Click here to read more about bringing alcohol on a cruise .

Prohibited items on cruise ships:

  • Drugs (including marijuana and CBD, even if legal in the state you are sailing from)
  • Explosives or fireworks
  • Flammable items
  • Beer/liquor
  • Heat-producing appliances (curling irons/hair dryers are ok)
  • Blades longer than 4″
  • Hoverboards

What happens if I bring something that I’m not supposed to?

Accidentally pack something that’s against the rules? Expect it to be removed from your bag when found — that includes alcohol, weapons, or other items.

Depending on the cruise line policy and what you item is, it may be held and returned to you at the end of the cruise or it may just be confiscated. For that reason, we suggest being very careful about what you pack to avoid running afoul of the luggage rules.

If it’s an illegal substance that’s found, you may be getting a visit from law enforcement.

Can I bring a curling iron, hair straightener or a hair dryer?

In the humidity of a cruise, some people’s hair goes wild. We understand.

The good news is that while clothes irons aren’t allowed, you can bring things like a straightener, hair dryer or curling iron. You should definitely be careful, and not forget to unplug them when not in use (in fact, room stewards may do so if they see it left unattended when servicing your room).

As for hair dryers, you can bring one from home, but cruise cabins have these built in, similar to a hotel. They are small, but can get the job done for a few days of vacation. There is no real reason to take up the luggage space, unless you just can’t live without your specific hair dryer.

Can I bring food on a cruise?

If you have special dietary restrictions and want to bring special foods, then it’s best to contact the cruise line to get all the ins and outs of how to bring your food. One nice thing is that cruise lines can meet almost any dietary restriction you might have.

If you’re simply wanting to brings some snacks, then you are welcome to do so . One thing to keep in mind, however, is that a cruise will go to several different countries. That means customs officials worry about things like foreign pests and disease.

For that reason, any food you bring on board needs to be pre-processed, packaged, and unopened . You can’t bring homemade items. You also want to avoid fresh fruit and vegetables.

Does the “3-1-1” liquids rule apply to cruises?

The “3-1-1” rule is ubiquitous in airports. It’s the rule that you can only bring liquids three ounces or less in a one quart plastic bag, with one bag per passenger. The rule is a thorn in the side of many travelers.

For everyone’s sanity, this rule does not apply to cruise ships.  Bring shampoo from home or a bottle of hairspray or a full-sized tube of toothpaste. Just keep in mind that if you have to fly to the port, then you’ll still have to meet the guidelines on liquids for air travel.

Can I bring alcohol in my bags when boarding?

If you want to bring beer or liquor on your cruise, then the bad news is that these aren’t allowed to be brought on ships. If they are found, they will be removed and discarded. (You can buy alcohol in ports of call and bring it home, but it’s held for you until the end of the cruise.)

The good news? Most cruise lines do allow you to bring a bottle or two of wine or champagne .

The amount varies among cruise lines, but it’s usually one bottle (750 mL) per adult in a cabin. When you bring this on, just keep it in your carry-on luggage. You don’t want to put it in checked luggage where it can possibly be broken.

Can I bring non-alcoholic drinks on a cruise?

Yes, but only on some cruise lines. Major lines Carnival and Royal Caribbean have more relaxed rules that allow you to bring small quantities (usually 12 or fewer) drinks on board with you. Norwegian does not allow you to bring aboard drinks.

So if you want to have a Coca-Cola or juice and don’t want to buy it on the ship, then you can bring it with you as you board.

Note that not every cruise line allows this, so you’ll want to see if the specific rules for your line. We have a list of cruise line policies around non-alcoholic drinks here .

What about rules for carry-on luggage for my cruise?

When you arrive at the port, you will check your large luggage (unless you want to carry it all on). This luggage will be carted off, X-rayed, put aboard the ship, and then delivered to your room later that day. That entire process will take several hours.

For that reason, passengers are encouraged to bring some sort of carry-on that has anything you might need for the first few hours on the cruise ship — travel documents, passports, medications, allowed alcohol, toothbrush, your swimsuit, and maybe even a change of clothes for dinner.

This carry-on bag will stay with you and be run through an X-ray machine in the terminal, similar to an airport. You will then keep it with you as you board the ship.

Do I have to check bags over a certain size?

Luggage for a cruise

No. There is no rule that you have to check luggage. However, keep in mind that you will have to lug your carry-on items around the ship until your room is ready. If you check in early, that could be a couple of hours. Even a small bag can be a nuisance after that long.

There are some “official” restrictions on carry-on sizes, but we’ve found them to be less strict than with an airline and rarely enforced. As long as you can safely and easily move your bag, it should be ok to board with.

Will my bags be searched on a cruise ship?

All baggage brought on board the ship will be X-rayed. When you go through security you will set your carry-on bags on the x-ray machine like you’d find at an airport. Checked luggage is also X-rayed behind the scenes. Usually further inspection isn’t required unless the security staff finds something dangerous or prohibited.

When will I get my bags after checking them?

When you check your bags at the cruise terminal, they are taken, X-rayed, and then loaded onto the ship.

From there, the cruise line staff delivers your luggage directly to your stateroom the evening of your first night. Usually this will take a few hours.

It’s important that you bring anything you might need for your first night in your carry-on, including what you plan to wear to dinner. While most people will have their bags within a few hours of boarding, it may be until later that you get yours.

Can I bring CBD or marijuana in my luggage?

CBD is now seemingly everywhere, and rules around marijuana have relaxed (including full legalization in a number of states).

That said, these items are not allowed on cruise ships . Cruise lines follow federal law instead of state laws. As well, the items are prohibited in a number of countries, so the cruise line restricts you from bringing CBD or marijuana to comply with rules in any port you might visit.

It’s not a good idea to try and sneak them on either as we’ve seen stories of local law enforcement in some countries detaining passengers for these items.

Where do I put my suitcase in the cabin after I unpack?

There’s no arguing that cruise cabins are small and you might be wondering where to put an empty suitcase so that you aren’t constantly tripping over it. Fortunately cruise cabins do a great job of maximizing space.

There are closets in every cabin that can hold a suitcase or two. You can also store them under the bed so that you don’t have to worry about it taking up valuable space.

hello, my wife and I are going on our first cruise after 15 years, can we bring alcohol on the cruise and if so how much? and should we put it in our back pack or secured well in our suit cases. we are going Carnival. thank you

Carnival allows one regular sized bottle of wine or champagne per person.

Check out this article for more details: https://www.cruzely.com/cruise-line-alcohol-policies/

Does norweigian accept wheelchairs

Can you bring a miniature blender on board?

I don’t know where it would be against the rules, but it might get some funny looks.

Is locking your suitcase a bad idea?

I’d suggest not locking it just to keep things simple. If there is something valuable, just bring it as a carry on.

If I wanted to keep my luggage with me and not check it can I do that? I just want my items when I get to my room. Also can I roll it off at the end of the cruise so I do not have to wait for my luggage?

I will be on a Carnival cruise

Absolutely. In fact, that’s what a large portion of people do as they are the first to debark.

Can I bring a skateboard to use when on shore trips?

Do they have free water bottles on the cruise , Will I need to bring them or order them before I get on ship? I will be going on a carnival ship. Size of luggage to bring

Not free, but you can order them. It’s $10 for a 12 pack of water.

Can my carry on be a rolling bag? If my memory serves me right, Carnival didn’t allow rolling bags as carry ons. (It’s been a few years.)

Yes, I do it every cruise!

Hello: can I travel with 2 guitars, a suitcase and a carry on for a transatlantic cruise?

That shouldn’t be a problem.

Are cruise allowed to break security seals on my shampoo etc?

I’m still unsure about the allowed dimensions of the carry on bag. We would each like to carry the traditional size case allowed on flights as cabin luggage which fits in the overhead lockers. Is this ok

Absolutely. There is no real limit on carry-on. You can bring on a full-sized suitcase. Most people just check large bags because it’s much easier than having to carry them onto the ship.

can we check in 2 pieces of luggage and a garment bag? Also, can we bring a handheld steamer for clothes?

Yes, you can bring the luggage and garment bags. Steamers are typically prohibited. There is laundry service on the ship if needed.

I need to take two largish boxed items with me to Florida on Sky Princess from Southampton on 29 Oct 2022. As normal we also have two suitcases. The boxed items weigh 15pounds and 36 pounds respectively. I have phoned Princess and was reassured the bit of boxed extra luggage would be ok. Please reassure me it is!!

If the cruise line says Ok, then that should be plenty of assurance. I see no reason to worry.

What are the limitations on a one way cruise/relocating to a new home? Can you just bring whatever will fit in your room? Musical instruments? Snorkeling equipment? Martial arts gear?

Well there are some reasonable bag limits. If it looks like you’re packing up for a move, then expect the cruise to ask about all the bags.

Is rubbing alcohol allowed on carnival cruise ship

We’d think that if it were sealed and unopened (and a small amount) it should be fine.

Am I allowed t take paracetamol caskets in my cases along with voltrrol and rubbing creams ,I have Rhumatoid Athritis and need extra over the counter meds to add to my prescription meds

Not sure what those are, but OTC medications are fine.

My husband and I both use CPAP machines. We will be driving to embarkation port, doing a cruisetour (land portion after ship) and then flying home. Can we bring the gallon of distilled water on with us? I would not need to take it back on the plane. Thanks!

Yes, that should be fine. Cruise lines make exceptions for the distilled water for this and for baby formula.

Thank you. I will be sure to take it along then.

I have a large framed shirt that someone is taking on a cruise ship toAuckland for me is this allowed ? Thanks Cushla

Should be fine. After all, cruise ships have art sales on the ship.

Can and much water can we bring on the cruise ship???

Depends on the cruise line. Carnival and Royal Caribbean allow 12 bottles. See more here: https://cruzely.com/bringing-water-or-soda-on-the-ship-carnival-royal-caribbean-princess-and-norwegian/

Can we bring pop on a cruise? Sone say yes some say no…. some say carry on some say luggage. We’re travelling on holland cruises

Holland America is a little confusing because we found nowhere that it says you can or can’t bring on soda. Anecdotes on the Internet make it sound like bringing a reasonable amount on board with you is ok.

When it’s time to leave the ship at the end of the cruise what do you do with your larger checked bags? Do you just carry them out with your other belongings?

If you want, you can place them outside the cabin the night before you ship gets home. The crew will take them and they will be brought to the terminal for you. Many people, however, choose to carry them off themselves because passengers carrying all their belongings (and not waiting on luggage) are allowed to debark first.

Hi, any idea if we would be allowed to bring a gallon of soymilk (for our dairy allergic kid to eat with cereal as the ones they stock on ships are always sweetened already) on the boat? Thanks!

Typically you aren’t allowed to bring items that large. However, since it’s for dietary needs, then they will likely say it’s fine. I would call the cruise line and explain the situation. They will point you in the right direction.

where can you place your wine bottles

We suggest bringing those in your carry-on to avoid any breaking and leaking.

I read that on Princess you are allowed 1 750ml bottle of wine per person. What about those small, single-serve 187ml bottles? 750ml is about the volume of a regular bottle. Is the limit for “number” of bottles or the “amount” per person? 750ml is about 4 of those small ones. So, can I bring 4 small ones per person?? Thank you.

That’s a good question. It’s not something we’ve tried before. It will likely depend on the security staff at that particular port. We’ve found many are fairly relaxed on rules; they just want to make sure you aren’t bringing anything dangerous.

This is an odd question, but being an introverted crafter I would like to bring supplies to help me decompress during down times. I was wondering if pliers are acceptable – I make chains similar to rosary chains (no cutting, just bending and twisting; no waste). Is there a length limitation or just not allowed.

Pliers are fine. In fact, knives up to 4 inches are allowed (but we’d suggest leaving those at home).

Pliers that were in his carryon bag were taken away from my husband when we boarded Norwegian Breakaway February 2020 in New Orleans.

Hello I was wondering if it would be acceptable to use a water bottle as a container? My hair conditioner comes in a very large jug so I was thinking about pouring it into a water bottle. But, it seems there could be a few misunderstandings in doing this. Would it be alright?

There’s no rule against the type of container, but as you mention, it would likely be questioned. What about travel bottles? Those that hold a few ounces are perfect for a cruise.

I was wondering if carry on luggage is checked? Like do they just put it through the x-ray machine or just be like “oh it’s carry on, you’re good to go.” Do they x-ray it just like they do with the other checked luggage?

Yes, everything is x-rayed just like at the airport.

Can you take CBS oil tablets on ship

We assume you mean CBD oil? We’d leave it at home. There are a quite a few complications about the legality and it’s not worth the risk.

This will be my first cruise, and I was wondering if you can check a duffle bag as luggage, or am I going to have to treat it as a carry on?

You’re going to have a blast. On a cruise, you don’t have to “check” any luggage. You can if you want so that you don’t have to carry it, but you can also just carry it on yourself. It’s not like a plane where there is only a certain amount of room.

Will items be pulled out of carry on such as vapes and e liquid?

Vaping and e-cigarettes are allowed on ships, but like regular smoking, it’s limited only to certain areas. So there’s no real reason for the security team to pull out the items. That said, they do have the right to inspect anything you’re bringing on the ship.

Are contact solutions allowed

Yes, they are.

Where should I pack the water bottles I’m allowed to bring? They will be unopened and still sealed in their plastic. Also- should I put my cigarettes in my carry on or luggage? I am driving down so I won’t go through airport.

It’s usually best to carry these items on with you if you can. That way they don’t have the potential to bust and soak other people’s bags.

Is the carry-on allowed along with a purse? In other words, they don’t count a woman’s purse to be the carry on?

Carry-on is simply what you bring on with you. You can bring every bag with you if you want to carry it. There are no real limits like there are on airlines. For instance, we always “carry on” a full-size suitcase and backpack.

Can I have my splash, perfumes, lotion and accessories on my carry in bag??

Absolutely.

Am I able to bring a hair dryer, straightener and curling iron

Yes, although hair dryers are already provided in cabins.

What if your luggage is over 50 pounds what will happen to it

On a cruise? Nothing. The baggage rules are pretty lax. However, keep in mind that you will still need to carry it around on your way to the ship, so the lighter, the better!

Are people allowed to bring their scale on a cruise?

Like a bathroom scale? Sure, but keep in mind it might make you sad. There will also likely be scales in the gym if you don’t want to bring one.

Thank you very much!

Hello, was wondering where the best place to store my vape pen when going through cruise security would be. Can I put it through my checked luggage? Travelling with older relative that would disapprove and would rather not have to pull out my vape pen in front of her when going through security. Can i leave it in my bag without taking it out? Flew with an epi-pen and had to take it out of my bag and put it on the tray seperatly. Will that occur? Side note- old enough to smoke, young enough to be publicly chastised by elder. Thank you for you’re help! -Grace

Yep, you can put it in your checked luggage. Smoking is allowed only on certain parts of the ship… but it is allowed. Surprised you had to take it out at all — even in a carry-on. Edit: I see you had to take it out when you flew. Cruise security is more accommodating. If you don’t want to risk it, however, just toss it in the checked baggage.

Luggage and Baggage Rules for Taking a Cruise (How Much Can I Bring?)

Frequently Asked Questions

This Type Of Luggage Is The Best Solution For Maximizing Space In A Tiny Cruise Cabin

cruise ship sailing open ocean

If you plan to take a cruise sometime soon, you should consider shelling out the money for collapsible luggage. Despite being thousand-foot goliaths functioning like floating cities dedicated to relaxation and checking out gorgeous ocean views, the majority of these cruises have small passenger sleeping quarters. Even Royal Caribbean's supersized Icon of the Seas has cabins as tiny as the most cramped NYC studio apartments despite being intended for families. You likely don't want much of that vital space taken up by the suitcases of yourself, your spouse, and your kids.

Many first-time cruisegoers wonder where to put luggage during the trip — and the most popular answer is to stash empty containers under the bed. How much space you'll have for suitcases varies from ship to ship, but many have about 12" of clearance. Some passengers put their smaller suitcases inside bigger ones and slide them all under the bed together, but if your cases don't nest like that or are too thick to fit, you'll end up with bags taking up a lot of cabin space. Luckily, collapsible luggage makes storage a breeze.

The advantages of collapsible luggage

You may have figured out how to save tons of space in your luggage with packing hacks , but what about the space your bags take up? Fortunately, you can compress that into small, manageable sizes with collapsible luggage. You can choose from traditional foldable soft bags like backpacks and duffels. You can also get hard-shelled suitcases that collapse almost flat, ensuring they'll fit into even the narrowest under-bed space in your cruise ship's sleeping quarters.

Whether or not you use travel expert Samantha Brown's space-saving hacks when you pack, you won't have to sacrifice the amount of stuff you can bring on your cruise if you use luggage that can fold up. Collapsible luggage comes in both carry-on and full check-in sizes, so unless you like an old-fashioned steamer trunk for your ocean voyages, you should be able to find a comparable model. Some of these handy cases serve as an all-in-one, converting easily from super flat to carry-on size to check-in sizes, depending on how you zip them up.

Can you bring any luggage you want on a cruise?

You have many aspects to consider when planning your journey across the water, ranging from  the most cost-effective time to book a cruise to logistical concerns like which cabin to choose so you don't get seasick — but what you can bring with you may be one of the most essential details. Cruises generally don't have baggage fees, so you have a lot of leeway regarding what you can have with you. The exact policies vary by cruise line, but some major companies like Royal Caribbean state outright that they allow basically all kinds of bags, from trunks to totes, so you should not have an issue bringing collapsible luggage onboard.

Carnival Cruises suggests bringing one bag per person for short trips and limiting yourself to two bags on longer voyages (over six days). It also officially doesn't allow oversized or extremely heavy bags, but these restrictions are pretty relaxed on most cruises. However, remember that unlike on an airplane, "checked" luggage goes straight to your room after going through security and travels with you. This means you have access to your belongings at all times, but it will also take up space in your room the entire trip, making collapsible luggage a fantastic choice for a cruise.
