The beautiful artwork of the cards and the association element make up for a very fun and engaging game that is suitable for almost all groups of players.

There’s almost 10 Dixit expansions out, so it can be tough to choose which Dixit to get. In this post we ranked them all to help you choose your best Dixit expansion.

A small note to the reader: the Dixit expansions all contain more cards, the mechanics are the same for all Dixit games (with the exception of Dixit: Jinx). Therefore our main ranking criteria are quality and style of the art work.

Also note that all Dixit expansions are fully compatible with each other, but most expansions require a Dixit base game for the scoring.

Dixit vs. Dixit: Odyssey

If you do not own a version of Dixit yet, we definitely recommend Dixit: Odyssey over Dixit. The scoring in Odyssey is simpler and more clear than in the original Dixit. And you can play Odyssey with more players . This makes Dixit: Odyssey the best Dixit expansion on our list.

2. Dixit: Daydreams

• Absurd but familiar (like a dream)
• Very open to interpretation
• Fine details

We also love Dixit Daydreams because the longer you watch its cards, the more you see. This is of course true for all Dixit expansions, but we find it particularly true for this one.

For example, did you see right away that the fox is walking into bear traps? Or that the moon woman is pulled by a ghost? Or that the sand castle lady has big waves or flames behind her?

Of course artwork is subjective, but Daydreams is so beautiful, strange and multi interpretable that it leads to some objectively good Dixit games.

3. Dixit: Harmonies

• Most abstract
• More based on feelings than knowledge

Harmonies challenges you to get in touch with your immediate associations and feelings. The pictures won’t give you specific items to base your hint on, you always have to look at the picture as a whole. Your hint is therefore more likely to be something like a state of mind, such as ‘at peace’.

Dixit: Harmonies is the best Dixit expansion for learning about people’s feelings, rather than about specific facts that they may know or recognize in a picture. So if you’re into this, you’ll love it.

4. Dixit: Revelations

• Most consistent theme
• Action cards

What works great with the Ancient Greece theme is that many cards seem to be in motion . The artists really outdid themselves in making the pictures seem like a snap shot of an action scene.

What stands out about Dixit: Revelations is that the cards in the set are more similar to each other than usual. For example, your hint can’t just be ‘Achilles’, because there’s several guys that resemble him in this expansion. Therefore, in Revelations you have to go for more specific clues than you can normally get away with in Dixit.

5. Dixit: Journey

• Open to interpretation

We love a lot of the little details on the cards of this expansion. Like, the crazed look in the eyes of the kid in the rain coat. Or the fact that the man feeding the oversized pelican is blind. It’s these kinds of details that provoke a visceral response which can be ammunition for a great clue.

6. Dixit: Origins

• Many emotions displayed

The pictures in Origins are quite busy, and usually quite weird, involving monster like creatures. We like to mix the Origins cards in with the cards of the other expansions. Otherwise, with only Origins cards, the vibe of the game becomes a little sinister.

7. Dixit: Memories

• Beautiful cards

Despite its beauty, Dixit: Memories is not ranked very high on our list. This is because although the cards are pretty, many of them are also quite straightforward. They aren’t necessarily very open to interpretation.

We still enjoy playing with this expansion. But, the hints tend to revolve more around small details that are designed into the background, rather than personal associations.

We like our cards to be a bit more ambivalent, but if beautiful cards and detail spotting are your thing, Dixit: Memories is the expansion for you!

8. Dixit: Quest

• Simplest cards

Compared to the other Dixit expansions, we find Quest to be a little stale. Many of its pictures are largely empty except for one or two figures on it. Therefore, this is the Dixit expansion we recommend last.

Of course, there isn’t one single expansion that would be best for everyone. That’s why instead of ranking each expansion, we’ll talk about the most popular Dixit expansions, and highlight their best features. This way, you’ll easily find out which one you’ll enjoy the most.

Dixit Base Game – Necessary for Expansions

Before you start buying expansions, make sure that you have the base game. Expansions won’t come with all the things you need for a game. In addition to the cards, you also get the game board with 6 wooden rabbits, so you can keep track of each player’s progress. There’s also 36 tokens, which are used for voting.

Besides this base set, you also have another option, to get all the things you need for a game of Dixit. That’s the very next product we’ll talk about.

Dixit Odyssey – Best Dixit Expansion for More Players

The Odyssey set offers an improved voting system – with special voting cards. There’s also a new game board and 12 rabbits! This means that instead of the usual 3-6 players, this game can support 3-12 players, while still providing a pristine Dixit experience.

So if your play group often has more than six players, you should definitely get the Dixit Odyssey game .

Note that there’s a difference between the Odyssey game (big box) , and not the Odyssey expansion (smaller box) . They both feature the same cards, but the expansion doesn’t come with the things you need to play with more players. So make sure to pay attention when purchasing this product.

Dixit Origins – Similar Vibe as Base Game

If you just want some more cards with the similar artwork style, then Origins is the best Dixit expansion for you. While the cards are somewhat different from the ones you get in the base set, they still feature that same vanilla feel.

There isn’t a single standout theme in the Origins expansion. However, most of the cards do feature a creature of some kind. They also frequently look a bit dangerous.

All in all, it’s a nice expansion if you just want some more cards to add to your regular set, and increase variety. However, if you’d like a more different art style, you’re better off with some other Dixit expansions.

Dixit Harmonies – Best Abstract Dixit Expansions

If you really want to push your animation to the 100%, Harmonies expansion is a perfect pickup. Why? Because it features the most abstract art of all Dixit expansions.

You’ll be able to focus more on feelings and abstract ideas. You won’t want to name specific items, as they will very often be a big giveaway for other players. The artwork is mostly full of primary colors and shapes. No sharp contrasts in this one.

If you enjoy the abstract hints based on feelings, you really can’t go wrong with Harmonies.

Dixit Revelations – Most Unusual Dixit Expansion

Revelations is certainly one of the best Dixit expansions. The most cards have the theme of Ancient Greece , but that’s not all. The artwork looks really trippy, and most of it is in motion.

Furthermore, cards can regularly represent the same concept or idea. Of course, that’s the case with the most Dixit expansions, as it’s one of the things that makes the game so fun. However, this is even more prevalent with the Revelations expansion, which makes it truly amazing.

So, Revelations is an incredible expansion if you’re looking for a new flavor of Dixit game. If you’re a fan of Ancient Greece, that’s even better!

Dixit 10th Anniversary Expansion – Artwork from All Previous Artists

Dixit has been around for a long time. In fact, the first edition was released way back in 2008. Around 10 years later, we got this special 10th anniversary edition.

What’s so special about it? Well, the cards feature artworks from all the artists who worked on the game before . As such, it’s a great option if you aren’t sure which Dixit expansion to get. You can start with this one, figure out who your favorite artist is, and for the next expansion you can pick the one that features the most of their work.

As far as the gameplay goes, you can still expect all the good parts of Dixit. Even though the work comes from different artists, the cards can still be represented by the abstract hints, that will leave everybody guessing just which card is yours.

Dixit Journey – Best Dixit Expansion for Storytelling

The cards from the Journey expansion are also amazing. The theme journey is represented in various ways. Cards also offer a lot of opportunity for storytelling. Your hint can often be a whole sentence (of course, it has to be abstract enough) , and other players won’t have too hard of a time to match with it.

Journey is quite a popular expansion, and you won’t be disappointed with it, as there are many fun prompts to use with these cards.

Dixit Mirrors – Dixit Expansion With the Funniest Artworks

One expansion that we really can recommend highly enough is called Mirrors . This expansion has (in our opinion) some of the most fun artwork of all Dixit sets and expansions. It’ll surely bring lots of fun to your next Dixit game night, if you decide to go with it.

As you can see, the cards are quite detailed and unique, as such they offer a big boost to your imagination, and you’ll be able to come up with fun hints very quickly. So if you’re looking for more fun playing Dixit, Mirrors won’t disappoint you.

Dixit Memories – Best for Playing With Kids

Last, but definitely not least, here’s Dixit Memories . This expansion is also a very popular one, and for a good reason. All the cards are full of color, and most of them are quite cheerful. The art style is also somewhat cartoonish.

The combination of all these factors makes this one of the best Dixit expansions for when you’re playing with younger kids. They are going to love these cards, and they’ll easily find inspiration for their starting phrase.

As you can see, these cards are very colorful, and the more time you’ll spend looking at them, the more details you’ll notice. Such cards are certainly one of our favorite ones, as you can use them many times, and always come up with new ideas for your starting prompts.

Currently, there are ten Dixit expansions. One of them (Odyssey) is also available as a standalone expansion. On top of these ten expansions, there’s also the original Dixit game, so if you count it as well, you’d get to eleven Dixit expansions.

Not really, as Dixit really isn’t the type of game that becomes harder with any one set of cards. However, some expansions might work better for your playgroup.

In general, no. You’d be missing the vote counters, and the game board. However, if you’re a crafty person, you can make those items yourself, without too much trouble.

Here’s the good thing – all Dixit expansions are good for kids, as there’s no inappropriate content in them. If we’d have to pick one that the kids will enjoy the most, we’d probably go with Dixit Memories , for the reasons we’ve stated before.

Dixit is one of the best board games to come in recent years and it has spread widely all around the world with great reviews pretty much everywhere. Because of its popularity, Libellud made a lot of Dixit expansions and we decided to rank them based on their beauty and difficulty.

My recommendation would be: buy them all! I love this game though, so I’m a little biased towards it!

10 th – Dixit Quest

I think this expansion just adds more cards to the game, and more cards are always better in a game like Dixit, but that’s pretty much it.

The style is very sketchy, cards are not as beautiful nor as detailed as the Dixit base game or Dixit Odyssey , and I haven’t used this expansion in a very long while, because we always opt for the more recent expansions, which are prettier.

Worth it if you want to add replayability to the game; but if you are looking for pretty cards, keep reading.

9 th – Dixit Daydreams

I think this one is just a pretty expansion: I like the cards and the style. The main theme is obviously Dreams. And I can definitely see a dreamy style in the cards.

Some of them are very good, but overall I personally think that it’s very easy to give obvious titles to the cards since they are not much detailed.

There are some references to well-known fables, so that makes this expansion very suitable for children, but adults can appreciate them as well.

If you like the dream’s theme I’d suggest opting for this expansion. Otherwise, like the previous Dixit expansion, I would recommend buying others before purchasing this one.

8 th – Dixit Harmonies

Here the style of the cards is very similar to the first two Dixit expansions, even though a little bit improved. The colours used for these cards are mainly the primary ones and overall there is an almost complete absence of deep contrast. These 2 combined factors result in a lack of small hidden details that prevent players from choosing challenging titles.

I have to say it: Harmonies has probably one of my favourite Dixit cards, still I think overall there are better expansions than this one.

I would put it at the same level as Daydreams: pretty style, but some cards are not very detailed. I still like these cards, and I’d suggest buying this expansion if you like abstract art.

7 th – Dixit Origins

This is an expansion with a very particular and different style from the other ones: the cards seem drawn with coloured pencils.

I think these are cards that are very easy to give titles to: there are a lot of details and each card has a lot of themes you can get your title from, such as movies, songs, and emotions.

Regarding the main theme of this expansion, all the cards have a creepy vibe, with a lot of monster-like figures. The style also kind of reminds me of Tim Burton movies.

Not one of the best Dixit expansion packs out there, but definitely a solid expansion!

6 th – Dixit Mirrors

This is the latest expansion to the game. Did we really need it? Well, not really, with now almost a thousand cards and no space where to store them. Did I enjoy it? HECK YES!

I cannot stress enough the concept that more cards in a game like Dixit are always good. And if they come with an art style like the one in Mirrors, well, keep them coming! The artwork is one of the best out of the most recent expansions, the artist behind it is Sébastien Telleschi.

The variety in themes is wide, and in some way they all follow the title of this expansion, mirroring scenes from movies and from real-life experiences. Most of the cards are very colourful, hence making it very kid-friendly.

As always, there are some cards that put together things that don’t really make sense in real life, but that’s why Dixit is great, giving you ideas to make your brain work and find connections where there usually wouldn’t be any.

5 th – Dixit Anniversary

This expansion came with a really neat idea that brought a breath of fresh air to the game: they reunited artists from the previous expansions, and each one of them made some of the cards.

This makes this expansion very unique since it has mixed artworks from all the previous ones. It also makes it a good expansion to buy before the other ones because based on the artworks you like the most, you’ll be able to choose which expansion to buy next.

Beware though, some of the cards are kind of creepy, so it’s probably not the most kid-friendly expansion.

4 th – Dixit Journey

This is the first expansion in which we saw a real change in the style of the cards: it’s very clean and detailed, and the cards are very colourful.

It’s one of the expansions I use the most because there are plenty of titles you can give to these cards, taking inspiration from a variety of things, especially from movies.

Some artworks seem taken straight up from an animated movie, thus making it a great kid-friendly expansion.

In a ranking table, this Dixit expansion is definitely up there with my favourites.

3 rd – Dixit Odissey

This is the first expansion of the game and it can be found as both as an expansion and a new standalone version of Dixit.

In the standalone version, they added a new mechanic to the game and the maximum number of players was raised from 6 to 12. They added the red peg, which you can use whenever you have a doubt between two cards. If you guess the narrator’s card using just one peg, you get an extra point. (you can check the full review of the game here ).

Now, about the cards: the style is one of the simplest and most basic ones and the drawings are not my favourites. However, the strength of this expansion lies in the easiness to give many titles even to the same card. This, sometimes, makes it very hard to find the narrator’s card.

So comparing it to the Dixit base game, I’d definitely recommend buying Dixit Odyssey.

It’s more fun to play in big groups and the cards are slightly better.

2 nd – Dixit Revelations

This one is the other Dixit expansion (beside Origins) with a very unique and different style.

Personally, these are my favourite cards based on beauty and art style. In the first print (and only for the first print) of this expansion, 21 cards have golden details, which makes this expansion even more particular and neat.

Regarding titles, I think these are not very easy cards to give titles to because they are very specific, even though they have a lot of details. It’s a great expansion to own, even more, if you already have other expansions.

A recurring theme in this expansion is Ancient Greece with a lot of references to Greek Myths.

1 st – Dixit Memories

This is probably my favourite of all the Dixit expansions and I find myself playing with these cards a lot!

The style is very cartoonish, the cards are very colourful, and the more you look at them, the more details you’ll be able to find. This is also why I consider this Dixit expansion pack the most suitable to use if you are playing with children.

You can take inspiration from many themes: movies, cartoons, videogames, and even songs!

If you are buying your first expansion, this is, in my opinion, one of the best ones to have.

Dixit Journey is a wonderful way to practice your skills at creating unique and subtle clues, while your friends test their abilities to bluff and mislead. A picture is truly worth a thousand words in this beautifully crafted board game that will be enjoyed by all.

In each round one person assumes the role of “active player” where they create a clue made up of one or more words or can even be a sound or group of sounds. The other players will then try to mislead everybody by finding a card in their hand that also represents the same clue.

We have 2 little girls (7 and 9 yrs old) that love to play games that we adults groan at. Ever tried “Beat the Parents”- don’t, just take my word for that one. “Eleminis,” “Pounce,” even “Story Cubes” and “Guess Who” are not my cup of tea. But I play them, because I love our girls and therefore I feel like I have to.

This game is totally different, I promise. I love this game. I love that the girls want to play this game and I love it when my partner wants to play this game too!

DiXit Journey is part story telling game part guess what everyone else is going to put down. It also has some amazing art on the cards that make you “oooh!” and “awwww!”

Object of the game is simple- get to 30 points first. The rules are spelled out at the top of the points board. There are only 3 rules (see picture above and slightly to the right).

My strategy changes when I am trying to guess my 7 year old’s description of “scary” (hint: it usually has a cat in the picture) vs my partner’s description of “A war of words.” On the 4th of July we played this with 6 people, ages ranging from 30s to my 2 little ones- and everyone had fun, laughed and truly enjoyed themselves!

I find that the pictures do not get old, as you can play the same cards with different results. For example you could easily play the lion card above (4th from the left) for a hand where the active player (the one who picks one card for everyone to guess) for the following phrases: “cat,” “ying and yang,” “dark side” and “bright eyes.”

The girls just guess what pictures they think best represents the phrase. For adults, I find it takes a little psychology, or knowledge of the person, to figure out what card s/he played. This game is a hit everytime. And everytime we play this game it is different. We love it!

The first time I played this with a group of 5 I thought, what the heck did I buy this for? It was really a bad game. After we played we ate some food and couldn’t stop talking about it. We played it all wrong. The issue we had was we were trying to play at a competitive level. This isn’t that type of game. This game is to create conversation and tell stories.

I play with my 5 year old, and it really helps him get creative (Yes I know, the game is for 8 and up- but I assure you it is still fun). This game is about getting creative and using your imagination, once you learn that the game becomes pretty fun.

This game art is awesome, and the rules are simple enough that you can include children (for entertainment purposes at least). Playing this with my son is great, he can take a card and give it a back story. That is the point of this game. When my 5 year old started to play he would describe the card exactly, such as “Two Knights fighting on a chess board floor”…there are not a lot of cards that depict that. Now he might take that same card and say “This is necessary for the kingdoms!” It opens up a lot more possibilities.

A house rule I have to play with an adult and child: Shuffle the cards and flip the top one and tell a story. Flip the next card and continue the story, and keep going. The game isn’t meant to be played like that, but it is still fun.

Pros: 1 – Rules are easy to following 2 – Game play is typically around 30 minutes 3 – Art work is pretty sweet 4 – Builds creativity 5 – The more you play the more you will enjoy it and the better you will be at it 6 – Easy to teach 7 – The cards are over sized so it makes your hands feel small, I recommend wearing an oversized hat as well while playing 8 – No reading involved so children and older people that have problems reading cards can play 9 – I have yet to see any arguing from the players take place in this game (even if my dad really hard to spin us up) 10 – The game is not very competitive

Cons: 1 – First time playing I found to be pointless, I didn’t understand the concept of a “story telling” game 2 – This game is not very fun with fewer than 4 people; it says can play with 3 but that becomes lame very quick 3 – The more expansions added, the better the game is, this is a con because they are not cheap and I am not rich 4 – The point system is difficult to keep track of if you have 5-6 players (Dixit Odyssey fixed this with the new “voting” system) 5 – The game is not very competitive 6- If you play it with your dad he may act like an idiot in attempts to frustrate other players

I game mostly with my kids. They love Apples to Apples to the point that I want to get rid of the game. After seeing this game as an explorable game and in the store, I picked it up. This scratches a lot of the same kind of itch that Apples to Apples hits, but this does it in a better way. Apples is more simple, but Dixit really executes better.

Play is pretty basic (rules fit on one sheet of paper). The active player picks one of his or her cards and gives a clue for the card. The other players then pick one of their cards that fits. The cards are put together and the other players make guess (through numbered counters) which one is the active player’s card. If the active player gets all or none of the guesses, the other players get 2 points. If one or more, but not all of the other players guess the active player’s card, the active player and each correct guess gets 3 points. There are also bonus points for each of the other players who get a guess for their cards. First to 30 points wins. It’s that simple.

Apples has the non-active players throw in cards to match whatever whim the active player has, and there may be no rhyme or reason to that whim. Dixit instead urges the active player to give a clue that will describe the card so at least one player picks it, but not so obvious that all the other players pick it. The other players also can keep hold of the driver’s seat by giving a card that will try to steal the guesses.

This is a cool little game. It’s simple, it’s fun, and the art on the cards is really cool just to look at.

My Story I found this game at a thrift store and I’m really pleased I did because I probably never would’ve tried it otherwise. I heard it described as “Like Apples to Apples, but with pictures,” and that immediately turned me off.

After having played it at game night, I have to say it is indeed like Apples to Apples. The main difference is that instead of one person choosing a winner seemingly at random, everyone chooses the winner by voting which card they think belongs to the “storyteller”. This makes all the difference and allows me to actually enjoy this game.

PROs – Beautiful artwork – Simple rules – Encourages creativity – Plays quickly – Kids can play (or at least be on a team)

CONs – Pictures can be too simple and too focused to come up with a good ambiguous clue. – One play and we used almost every card already! – My version came with cheap plastic pawns and the insert won’t hold any more cards (the newer printing had wooden bunnies and an insert that holds all the expansions up to this point)

Conclusion Dixit is like Apples to Apples with pictures, but somehow it’s actually good.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and that is so the case in DiXit, but, ultimately you want to use far fewer.

I had played DiXit when I bought Journey. The game play is the same, the challenges are the same, so why buy both? Simply put the additional cards and different artist make the game equally as entertaining.

I bought this version specifically to play with my students. I am a 7th grade teacher and their is great value educationally in this game. Students use inference, imagination and creativity to succeed at this game. And they have fun while doing it. Creativity is very challenging to teach directly. I cannot lecture on being creative. I can let them explore though.

The Rules Everybody has 5 cards in their hand. The “Active” Player plays a card face down and gives a clue. The next players then have a chance to play a card, face down, that they think matches the description or clue. After a quick shuffle the Active Player lays out each of the cards played. The remaining players then vote (using voting tiles again face down) for the card they think the Active Player played. Scoring is based on voting. 3 points for voting for the Active Players card, 1 bonus point for each person who votes for your card. Exceptions are, if no one votes for the Active Players card everyone gets 2 points. Or if everyone votes for the Active Players card everyone gets two points. The Active player scores by having at least one but not all people voting for their card. (3 points) First to 30 points wins.

The Components of this game are great in a teaching setting too. The board having the basic point values for quick reference is invaluable. I was a little disappointed in the cheap plastic tokens. (Quite a step down from the wooden bunny tokens of DiXit.)

A great game for everyone. I love it. I enjoy watching my students and son play the game and practice some wonderful storytelling skills. Great for adults too.

I’ve already reviewed Dixit and I gave it a lot of praise and this game gets the same amount of praise for its mechanics and great artwork but the only thing really missing physically is the the bunnies. That’s really the only thing that makes this game different. We are just using standard player tokens. But other than that, it really is the same game but without bunny meeples and also the artwork is different.

I have both Dixit and Dixit Journey and I don’t think as a game one is better than the other. However, I think it is completely necessary to buy Dixit Journey even if you have Dixit especially if you have played Dixit too many times with the same group which I have. If you keep on drawing the same cards over and over, your friends will know what you will always use as your hint to match up with your card so having another set of cards from Dixit Journey really gives it that variation and freshness.

I really love Dixit. I love the creativity aspect of it and I love that it also has a psychological aspect to it in the sense that you are trying to figure out how the other players think. So as as long they keep on making expansions, I’m going to keep on buying them to keep the game fresh.

Overview: Dixit Journey is a party game in which 3 to 6 players use creativity and psychology to communicate through intricately illustrated cards. This can be used as a stand-alone game or combined with another Dixit set for expanded card options.

Gameplay: Each player receives a hand of cards portraying a myriad of full-color illustrations. They contain many fairy tale and storybook inspiring images with many details. Players take turns being the “Storyteller”. They select a card, placing it face down on the table, and say a word or phrase about it. The other players add a card from their hand that they feel matches the phrase as a “bluff”. All the cards are shuffled and placed face up on the table. Everyone votes on which card they think was the Storyteller’s.

Players receive points by choosing the original image and by having their bluff image selected. The Storyteller scores by having some, but not all, players select his image. This dynamic is what creates the psychology of the game. The Storyteller needs to use his knowledge of the other players to choose phrases and images which will only be correctly translated by at least one, thus keeping him from being too obvious and too vague simultaneously.

Everyone takes a few turns as the Storyteller until the draw deck is depleted, which typically takes less than an hour. The player with the highest score wins.

Pros: – The included game board is a large improvement over the original, with numbers to identify played cards and the rules for scoring boldly printed on it. – The rules are short and easy to learn, making this accessible to all ages and perfect for casual gatherings. – Can be combined with original to expand the previously limited pool of cards.

Cons: – The relatively small pool of cards can limit the replay value of the game involving the same group of players. – The artwork is not as ambiguous and themes do not crossover as much as in original set, creating more of a challenge for Storytellers.

Historical Figure/ Fictional Character I’d Most Like to Play Against: Sigmund Freud

Dixit will challenge your imagination as you strive to understand your opponents’. It provides fast, lighthearted fun which can be added to almost any occasion. This should be anyone’s first Dixit purchase.

Dixit is a stand alone sequel to the original Dixit and plays exactly the same way. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Dixit and how it plays, check out my review of the original Dixit on my home page.

So if Dixit Original and Dixit Journey play exactly the same, why buy this one instead of, or in addition to the original? Well for one thing they each come with a completely different set of cards. Neither one is necessarily better than the other, but when they are mixed together, it adds more variety to the game, which does add replay value.

Unlike Dixit Original, whose board basically is the bottom half of the box, Dixit Journey comes with a folding board separate from the box. The Dixit Journey board is more practical in that it takes less space and features the numbers 1-6 on one side to place the cards in front of so you know which card is which number. The only downside to this board is that instead of being very colorful like the original, it is quite plain looking, featuring only a picture of a Mount-Rushmoor-like painting.

Also unlike the original, Dixit Journey comes with plain plastic pawns for the players instead of the wooden bunnies. This was entirely unacceptable to me and that is why whenever my group and I play with Dixit Journey, we always mix it with the original so the can have the benefits of both the Journey board and the original pawns.

Overall, I don’t believe Dixit Journey is as good of a buy as the original, solely because of the pawns and so I would recommend buying the original first, then Dixit Quest, then Dixit Odyssey, then Dixit Journey.

Dixit has it moments. It can potentially be a very fun game and it can also be a little unexciting. That all depends on the people you play with. Imagination is key and understanding the opponents psyche is important. Ultimately, its a race to the finish. The key of the game is trying to get at least one other opponent to guess your card correctly. It cant be too obvious and it also cant be too difficult. During your turn, you must try to give a clue that only one other person knows. That way, you can score your points to move your bunny ahead.

All in all, it is fun game. It can also be fun to play with non-gamers I think. Or at least try to introduce them into the games. PLaying with children is also good. I rarely get to play these nowadays, mostly because my friends want to play something else. Still, a good game. Good artwork. Nice big cards.

In Dixit, you have a hand of 6 cards with nicely done art work on them. One person picks one of their cards and says something that makes them think of their card. This can be a phrase, lyric, one word, whatever comes to mind. Everyone else takes a card from their own hand that they think matches the phrase, lyric, or whatever was said. The cards are randomly laid out and people bid on which card they think was the one chosen by the person who started that turn. Points are scored (not going into every rule here) and play is passed. I have played with ages 5 to 65 so far and believe it or not, younger folk are not at a disadvantage. I love this game, cards are great quality , art is great, and play is mellow and very entertaining. Dixit has a few different sets out, which I believe (can anyone confirm?) just have different art on the cards but plays the same. Either way I want to own them just to mix it up. Hope this helped some, and happy game playing.

what brings me back to this game over and over is the artwork of each card. every time you give description of a card it takes on a different interpretation. the more you play the deeper it can get. i would really try and look at each card and see how in depth they are. you will be surprised what whats in each card. the speed of the game is so so. it can be fast paced or it can drag if you don’t have a timer on the decision making process. once you can get pass that, the game flows well. give it a try and i hope you have as much fun as we have with it!

DIXIT: Información básica del juego

Dixit es un juego de cartas creado por Jean-Louis Roubira e ilustrado por Marie Cardouat . Tras numerosas vicisitudes, en el año 2008 fue publicado por la editorial francesa Libellud, en España está editado por Asmodee.

Este maravilloso juego de mesa pertenece al género familiar y permite partidas con una duración media de 30 minutos en las que pueden participar de 3 a 6 jugadores a partir de los 8 años de edad.

Aunque hay un ganador, el juego no se basa en la competitividad; los verdaderos valores de Dixit se encuentran en la cooperación y en el desarrollo de la creatividad: los participantes deben narrar y adivinar historias usando las bellas imágenes con las que las cartas están ilustradas.

El juego se nos presenta en una caja de cartón que posee unas dimensiones de 27,6×27,6×5,2 cm . y en cuyo interior encontramos:

• 84 Cartas con unas sorprendente ilustraciones y en un formato de 79×120 mm .
• 36 fichas de Votación fabricadas en cartón y en 6 colores diferentes

Con una sencilla mecánica de juego, Dixit no solo está ideado para potenciar la creatividad e imaginación, persigue fomentar la relación entre los participantes de forma de que estos se conviertan en los verdaderos protagonistas del juego.

Dixit es un juego en el que los participantes disponen de una mano de cartas que deberán jugar mediante la consecución de turnos.

En cada turno uno de los participantes se convierte en el narrador y tiene que exponer una frase, palabra, idea o breve historia que de alguna manera esté vinculada a una de sus cartas. El resto de los jugadores se convierten en oyentes y tienen que elegir la carta de su propia mano que más se aproxime al concepto dado por el narrador.

Conceptos básicos

Como habréis observado, la mecánica es sumamente fácil y el sistema de juego aparentemente muy infantil.

Entonces, ¿Dónde reside la gracia y el éxito de Dixit? ¡Ahora te ayudamos a entenderlo!

Las cartas son el pilar sobre el que se fundamenta el juego. Presentan unas increíbles ilustraciones que son aptas para niños de todas las edades ya que no transmiten sensaciones perturbadoras, muy al contrario, poseen un marcado estilo d e cuento de fantasía en el que no se representan simples objetos, animales, personajes o escenarios; van mucho más allá, ¡nos introducen en un mundo surrealista, onírico y fantástico!

Las cartas nos muestran imágenes principales, pero un jugador con buenas dotes de observación captará en ellas pequeños detalles que cambiarán por completo la percepción que en un principio se obtiene de ellas.

Ya podéis imaginar que la descripción de dichas imágenes invitan a la interpretación personal del narrador , que en muchos caso suele ser una descripción totalmente subjetiva de lo que la propia imagen evoca y no de lo que realmente representa.

¡Esta es la magia de Dixit!

El narrador

Esta figura es adoptada por el jugador que se encarga de crear la sentencia o historia con la que describe la carta elegida durante el transcurso de su ronda. Su labor consiste en proporcionar una «pista» que no sea demasiado obvia ni demasiado difícil para que el resto de los jugadores puedan reaccionar en función a la descripción ofrecida.

La historia que el narrador cuenta no solo va a depender de las ilustraciones, la propia personalidad y la creatividad de los jugadores juegan un papel decisivo en el desarrollo del juego.

Los oyentes

Los oyentes están representados por los jugadores que no adoptan el papel de narrador. Deben adivinar la carta del narrador y para ello utilizan unos marcadores que se relacionan con la distribución de las cartas jugadas en la ronda.

Caja tablero de puntuación

La propia caja del juego es el tablero de puntuación.

Los meeples o figuras en forma de conejito van avanzando a lo largo de un camino numerado. El camino marca los puntos logrados por los jugadores durante el transcurso del juego.

Preparación del juego

Sentarse en la mesa y comenzar inmediatamente a jugar es posible con Dixit ya que la preparación de las partidas no requiere prácticamente de tiempo.

• Se barajan las cartas y se reparten 6 a cada jugador. El resto se dejan en la mesa de juego para que los jugadores cojan una al finalizar cada ronda.
• Se coloca el tablero de puntuación en la mesa de juego con los conejitos en el punto de partida.
• Todos los jugadores reciben fichas de votación de su color. El número de fichas debe de corresponder al número de jugadores que integran la partida.
• Se escoge al jugador inicial que según el reglamento es el más joven.

¡Todo preparado para sacar el lado más creativo de los jugadores!

Para comenzar, se reparten 6 cartas a los jugadores y deben mantenerlas ocultas.

Se elige al jugador inicial (narrador) que tras haber visualizado sus cartas, elige mentalmente una de ellas para que se convierta en la carta protagonista durante su turno.

A continuación debe expresar una frase, palabra o sonido que considere que se relaciona con la carta elegida y la coloca en el centro de la mesa.

El resto de los jugadores (oyentes) también deben colocar en el centro de la mesa la carta con la figura que más semejanza tiene con la pista aportada por el narrador.

Una vez que todos los jugadores han puesto su carta sobre el tapete, el narrador las baraja y las vuelve a colocar boca arriba formando una fila. Cada jugador procede a votar en secreto la carta que cree que es la que más se aproxima al concepto que el narrador había explicado. Para ello utilizan la ficha con el número que creen que ocupa la carta que ha jugado el narrador.

Cuando todos los jugadores han colocado sus fichas de votación, estas se revelan de forma simultánea y se inicia el recuento de puntos haciendo avanzar a los conejitos tantos pasos como puntos se obtienen.

El sistema de puntuación es de 1,2 y 3 puntos por ronda y se consiguen en los siguientes supuestos:

• Si todos los jugadores adivinan la carta, o por el contrario, nadie lo hace, el narrador no gana ningún punto, es el castigo que este paga por haber dado una pista demasiado difícil o demasiado fácil. En este caso los oyentes obtienen 2 puntos .
• Si al menos un oyente acierta y otro falla, el narrador se anota 3 puntos .
• El oyente que adivina la carta del narrador consigue tres puntos.
• Al margen de la puntuación anterior, el oyente recibe 1 punto por cada voto que su carta haya recibido.

Cuando ha finalizado el recuento de puntos, cada jugador roba una carta del mazo para completar sus 6 cartas . A continuación comienza una nueva ronda en la que el nuevo narrador será el que esté posicionado a la izquierda del jugador que ha ejecutado este papel.

Finalización de la partida

La partida concluye en el momento en el que no quedan cartas en el mazo de robo y se proclama ganador el que más haya avanzado con su conejito en el tablero contador.

Si algún jugador logra alcanzar los 30 puntos antes de que se agoten las cartas del mazo de robo, la partida también se da por finalizada.

Para concluir con la reseña de Dixit, sólo queremos enfatizar en cómo un juego de reglas tan sencillas se ha convertido, por derecho propio, en un « party game» muy especial y es capaz (sin importar el rango de edad) de sacar el máximo rendimiento a la mente humana a través de la creatividad, las emociones y la interacción social.

Hasta el momento tan solo se ha creado una versión de Dixit , en cambio, son numerosas las expansiones que existen para proporcionar nuevos elementos al juego original. A continuación, te ofrecemos la información básica de cada una de ellas.

Como hemos comentado anteriormente, Dixit Odyssey es la única versión que existe del juego original .

Fue publicado en el año 2011 y ofrece 84 nuevas cartas, en esta ocasión ilustradas por Pierô, que mantienen el mismo criterio estético de la primera versión pero con mayor complejidad en los detalles .

La mecánica del juego es la misma que la de Dixit Clásico, las principales novedades que aporta esta versión es que permite incrementar el número de jugadores hasta 12 y unas pequeñas modificaciones en las reglas para adaptar el juego al nuevo número de participantes.

Esta última expansión está ilustrada por Sebastien Telleschi y sus 84 cartas nuevamente presentan imágenes de cuento con una gran variedad cromática y una enorme precisión de detalles en las que los jugadores pueden ver reflejada su propia infancia.

Entramos en un terreno que tiene especial importancia en un juego de apariencia simple, pero que por sus propias características es capaz de desarrollar un gran número de habilidades y que incluso puede ser usado con fines terapéuticos y educacionales.

Historia y origen de Dixit

Jean-Louis Roubira es un psiquiatra infantil de origen francés que, aunque no es muy conocido como diseñador, posee una larga trayectoria en el mundo de los juegos de mesa.

En el año 1990 acude al «Salon du jouet» donde encuentra un editor para su primer juego «Definissimo» . Este título es simplemente el juego del diccionario, cuyas bases son las que dieron origen al juego que conocemos hoy en día como Dixit.

En el año 2001 tiene la idea de un juego con las mismas bases que las de «Definissimo» pero en las que cambia las definiciones escritas por imágenes : todo el mundo puede mirar una imagen pero no todos pueden ver lo mismo. De aquí surge el concepto para crear un juego diferente y divertido. ¡Nace Dixit!

La idea estaba concebida y realmente prometía, pero el gran desafío de Roubira es el de encontrar las imágenes apropiadas para el juego.

En el año 2004 contacta con el ilustrador español Ulises Wensell para que trabaje en las imágenes del juego, pero la editorial ya poseía los derechos sobre ellas y resultó imposible implantar los diseños oníricos de Wensell. En este momento, el autor sufre una enorme decepción y prácticamente se olvida del juego.

No obstante, buscando en Internet nuevos ilustradores encuentra a Marie Cardouat que se hace cargo del diseño de las imágenes que conforman el juego clásico de Dixit.

En el año 2008 el juego está preparado y es publicado por la editorial Libellud .

Dixit Journey es una versión del popular juego de mesa Dixit, que agrega nuevas cartas e ilustraciones a la mecánica de juego existente.

Expansiones de Dixit

Debes saber que las normas y las características del juego son las mismas para todas las expansiones, siendo un juego de 3 a 6 jugadores, para más de 8 años y de aproximadamente 30 minutos de juego. Lo único que cambia en cada una de las expansiones son las ilustraciones y temáticas de las 84 nuevas cartas de juego. Incluso podrías jugar sólo con una expansión si conoces las reglas sin ningún problema.

¿Cual es el Dixit original?

El juego original de Dixit se llama Libellud Dixit Original. La edición actual del Dixit Original es del año 2019. Se puede distinguir a simple vista por el formato de la caja, que tiene una forma cuadrada a diferencia de las expansiones que son más rectangulares.

¿Cual es el mejor Dixit?

Por elegir uno diría que se hace indispensable adquirir primero el Dixit Original, y a partir de ahí todas las expansiones tienes sus encantos. Te recomendaría revisar las cartas de cada expansión, a ver cuales te gusta más.

¿Cuántas expansiones tiene Dixit?

Actualmente el juego de Dixit cuenta con 9 expansiones , con cartas ilustradas por diferentes artistas. La diversidad del talento artístico hace que sea un juego extremadamente atractivo para aquellos que aprecian la belleza dentro del mundo de los juegos de mesa.

Estas nuevas cartas se pueden usar con los componentes del juego base y brindan más variedad. Ten en cuenta que en cada expansión del Dixit hay 84 cartas y hay 9 extensiones, estamos hablando de 588 tarjetas ilustradas. Y si le sumas las de Dixit y Dixit odyssey nos plantamos en 924, ¡Una maldita locura!

Ya habíamos explicado la complejidad del significado de las cartas Dixit , por eso nos gustaría detallar cada una de las Expansiones Dixit y dar un poco de relevancia a los artistas que dieron vida a cada una de las ilustraciones. Así que vamos a por ello.

🔍 Todas las Expansiones del juego Dixit detalladas a continuación son de la editorial Libellud , traídas en castellano a España por Asmodee . Aunque son completamente independientes del idioma.

🔍 Como curiosidad, Dixit Odyssey empezó siendo una expansión, pero al incorporar su propio tablero y fichas, se convirtió en un juego independiente, una implementación de Dixit .

Dixit 2: Quest (2010)

Artista: Marie Cardouat  

A Dixit Quest le da vida la apasionante diseñadora fiel al juego Marie Cardouat , que con un talento incuestionable, fue la primera de una larga lista de diseñadores que darán vida a las cartas que hoy en día están en nuestras manos. 

Marie, posee un estilo fantasioso que se caracteriza por la simplicidad de las formas y el uso de colores vivos. Se podría decir, que sus ilustraciones son la viva imagen de los cuentos infantiles.

Premios: Golden Geek Awards nominado a la mejor expansión de juego de mesa del 2010.

Dixit 3: Journey (2012)

Este artista consigue unas ilustraciones de temática más oscura y llenas de metáforas . Podemos ver pequeños guiños a películas y cuentos infantiles que seguro nos ayudarán a tomar una decisión a la hora de interpretar la carta dixit.

Inicialmente sacaron esta expansión como si fuera un juego base. Con su caja grande, su tablero de puntuación y el resto de complementos. Más tarde se empezó a comercializar en Estados Unidos y Australia con el nombre de Dixit Journey solamente con las cartas sueltas como lo que es realmente, una extensión.

Dixit 4: Origins (2013)

Artista: Clément Lefevre

Nos sorprende sus fabulosas ilustraciones de temática fantástica y un tanto surrealistas . Desde mi punto de vista, parece que el artista nos intenta introducir en un mundo diferente en cada ilustración. Además,  trata de contar una historia rocambolesca centrada siempre en el personaje de la viñeta. En los dibujos predomina mucho el uso de colores pastel con tonalidades más realistas.

Dixit 5: Daydreams (2014)

Artista: Franck Dion

El título de esta expansión está plasmado en las cartas. Daydreams, o ensueños en español, hace referencia a los sucesos que tienen lugar mientras dormimos y que percibimos como reales .

Este ilustrador se centra mucho en dibujos de carácter antropomorfo que no es más que intentar dar cualidades humanas a los animales. Le gustan los tonos oscuros y los animales parecen estar representados con dibujos en forma de remolinos. 

• Los jugadores podrán utilizar la imaginería de sus cartas para engañar a sus rivales y adivinar cuál es la carta que mejor se adapta a la historia
• Es un juego de reglas fáciles, para disfrutar con amigos y familiares por igual

Dixit 6: Memories (2015)

Artista: Carine Hinder y Jerome Pelissier

La peculiaridad de esta expansión sería que está realizada por 2 Artistas, Carine Hinder y Jerome Pelissier. En sus obras representan multitud de formas, de carácter fantasioso y con mucho colorido . Sin lugar a dudas nos transmiten tranquilidad con esos colores neón tan llamativos y brillantes. Posiblemente lo que más me guste de sus ilustraciones sean sus fondos.

Dixit 7: Revelations (2016)

Artista: Marina Coudray

Damos un salto importante y muy notable visualmente. En sus dibujos de estilo gráfico, podemos notar elementos muy geométricos y con tonalidades de color muy bien presentadas. Además, sus obras tienen una cierta similitud a los diseños del Art Déco y del surrealismo . Por no decir que hay multitud de guiños de la música pop y memes de internet.

Dixit 8: Harmonies (2017)

Artista: Paul Echegoyen

Tenemos la sensación que en esta última expansión volvemos un poco a los orígenes de Dixit. Las ilustraciones nos recuerdan a las de Clément Lefevre y Marie Cardouat . Creemos que estas cartas están muy logradas y consiguen estimular la imaginación de los jugadores aún más .

Dixit 9: Anniversary (2018)

Artistas : Marie Cardouat, Xavier Collette, Marina Coudray, Franck Dion, Paul Echegoyen, Carine Hinder, Clément Lefevre, Jerome Pelissier, Piero.

Esta novedosa expansión tiene algo peculiar como ya os habréis dado cuenta. Así es, está diseñada por los 9 artistas que han formado parte de la historia de Dixit durante estos años . Los cuales han dejado una gran huella durante todo este tiempo en nosotros, haciendo volar nuestra imaginación a través de sus ilustraciones. Sin duda, este Dixit es el resultado de muchos años de trabajo y creatividad.

Actualmente está disponible la 2ª edición . Las cartas con las mismas, pero cambia la ilustración de caja.

• para disfrutar con los amigos y la familia por igual.

Dixit 10: Mirrors (2020)

Artista: Sébastien Telleschi

Un nuevo diseñador entra a formar parte en el mundo de Dixit. Dixit Mirrors cuenta con un buen surtido de cartas muy pintorescas y coloridas . De alguna manera, tras mirar las cartas que nos ofrece y observar el nombre del título, tenemos la sensación que realmente están diseñadas con la intención de ver un reflejo de nosotros mismos en momentos concretos . Por lo general diría que es una buena expansión y que aporta mucho valor en conjunto al juego. 

Esta es la última expansión de Dixit.

• ¡Añade diversión a tu Dixit con Dixit Mirrors!
• Utiliza las cartas del juego básico o las que incluye esta expansión.
• También puedes mezclar ambos mazos de cartas.

¿Cuál es la mejor expansión de Dixit y cuál elegir? ⭐

Para saber cuál es la mejor ampliación de Dixit , lo primero es tener claro que las diferencias entre todas las expansiones son las ilustraciones de las mismas cartas.

Más arriba hemos detallado peculiaridades de cada expansión para que podáis escoger la que más os guste, pero si la pregunta es: « Señores de Meepletirith, si solo pudierais escoger una expansión, ¿Cuál sería? » Os vamos a responder.

Si sólo tuviéremos la oportunidad de escoger una entre todas las que tiene Dixit, nos tenemos que preguntar si hay alguna expansión que nos llame especialmente la atención (echa un vistazo a los ejemplos de las cartas más arriba). Puede que un artista te transmita más o que los colores de sus ilustraciones te apasionen.

Nuestra opinión personal: Dixit Harmonies y Dixit Memories son las mejores expansiones. Tienen una belleza que nos fascina. Las ilustraciones de Harmonies nos transmiten mucho, y las cartas de Memories tienen colores vivos e inspiradores que las hacen especiales.

Dixit Quest , sea quizás la expansión que más nos sabe poco, puede que sea porque nos recuerda al estilo del artista del juego base, y nos apetece cambiar.

En todo caso, aquí nunca hay elecciones equivocadas , escoge sencillamente, la que más te guste.

Si te gusta disfrutar del arte que desprenden todas las cartas y sólo quieres escoger una, la recomendada es Dixit Anniversary , ya que en ella participan todos los artistas que han trabajado en Dixit .

Si es para regalo te diríamos que compraras la misma. Puede que le guste más un tipo de carta que otra, pero segurísimo, que algunas de las que vienen le vana encantar, ¡en la variedad está el gusto!

Además, Dixit Anniversary es la expansión más vendida, será por algo.

Dixit games rules in few steps

When it’s your turn, embody the storyteller. Pick a card from your hand (hide it from the other players), and announce a theme that the illustration inspires you.

The other players choose a card from their hands that makes them think of that theme.

Cards are shuffled and revealed: players take a vote to find your card.

You score points if some of the players, yet not all of them, find your card! Your chosen theme should neither be too obvious, nor too evasive.

Each Dixit expansion pack offers 84 new large size illustrated cards in a world of their own. Click on the expansions to discover the range of cards they include and to learn more about their illustrators. Use each expansion pack individually, or combine them for a different game experience each time. Dixit cards can be played with all of the games of the Dixit universe
