golfers on vacation with text: don't miss your tee time, protect your golf vacation with travel insurance

Travel Smarter™ — don’t worry about your clubs

On a golf vacation there’s one thing that will throw your game off for sure—missing golf clubs. Not only do our travel insurance plans include robust coverages that can cover you and your travel companions, but we even have plans that can cover your clubs.

What's the worst that could happen?

Sporting Equipment Loss or Delay:  Don't let lost, stolen or damaged baggage ruin your golf vacation. Our Preferred and Premium plans include extra coverage for your golf clubs. If they’re delayed for a certain period of time, we can even cover your rental costs so you can make your tee time.

Medical Emergency:  Did you know every year nearly 40,000 golfers end up in emergency rooms after being injured while playing? 1 Our plans include 24-Hour Emergency Assistance Services, for immediate aid accessible from anywhere in the world, as well as Medical and Dental coverage.

Trip Cancellation:  Our plans cover expenses or losses for around 20 different types of events that could cause you to cancel your travel plans. If you’ve scheduled pre-paid, non-refundable tee times, those costs can be reimbursed with the rest of your trip costs if you cancel your trip for a covered reason.

Best Travel Insurance For Golfers

We all love a good golf trip don't we? Whether it is to Portugal, Spain, resorts in the United States, or even further afield to the UAE or Australia, the idea of playing golf abroad with friends is as good as it gets.

However before you get too excited and go about booking your next trip, there are several things you need to get right. For a start, if you are taking your golf clubs a good travel bag is a must and going one step further, making sure you have insurance on your clubs, as well as travel insurance for your entire trip, is arguably as important as it gets. Knowing you are covered for any eventuality allows you to properly relax.

There are loads of companies and plans out there which is good because there is a lot of choice, but at the same time this can be overwhelming so we have sought to help you out by narrowing down some of our top recommendations for travel insurance for golfers.

Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

The top way of getting the best quote on your travel insurance is through a comparison website. This allows you to tailor your package to what you want the most and from our experience Go Compare is one of the best. I never thought I would say that after the most annoying television adverts in history but the variety of  price and merchant is second to none. Additionally you get good choice in terms of cancellation, medical and baggage cover.

What to consider when buying travel insurance

So what are some of the things you need to consider when buying travel insurance? We have given some key factors and considerations below. First we would recommend checking your usual travel insurance provider to see if it covers golf whilst on holiday but on some occasions a specialist policy is needed.

Damaged, stolen or lost golf equipment -  If you are taking your pride and joys away with you this is probably the most important aspect to get right. We would recommend picking a plan that offers a good amount here, so that if the worst comes to the worst, you are properly covered. Also we would recommend having some kind of idea of how much your equipment is worth whether that be clubs, carts or tech.

Just some of the other aspects to consider in a typical golf travel insurance plan are:

Cover for non-refundable green fees , if you can't play due to an accident, sickness or adverse weather.

Replacement golf equipment hire

Financial failure protection if your travel company, hotel, or airline go into administration

Medial and repatriation expenses

Personal liability insurance and legal costs, incase you injure another person while playing

Damage to third-party property , in case a wayward shot breaks a window or hits a car

Cost - Of course cost is an important factor to consider because there are plans at lots of different price points. Therefore we would recommend picking a plan that you can afford, whilst also making sure it offers enough cover for you as well.

How do you insure golf clubs when flying?

Plans with baggage insurance are recommended for travelers to protect belongings against loss, theft, or damage. For golfers traveling with their clubs, special consideration should be taken for plans with baggage insurance that offers sporting equipment coverage.

If you are planning to travel with your own clubs, ensuring these are covered under your policy is a good idea. Our Golf travel policy can provide protection for up to £5,600 worth of equipment as an optional extra. This would cover your golf clubs from damages, loss, or being stolen,  both on and off the course.

In the unlikely event of an injury to you or someone else whilst playing, the policy also includes personal accident and personal liability insurance as standard.

Golf Travel Insurance - Golf Cover for You and Your Equipment

Travel insurance for golfing trips abroad.

Golf Cover Insurance has been designed with golfers in mind and although playing non-competitive golf is covered within our policies under activities pack A at no extra cost, it is worthwhile considering taking out the Golf Cover Insurance extension. This Golf Holiday Travel Insurance extends your standard Travel Insurance policy to provide golf club cover, safeguarding your equipment and non-refundable green fees. It can be added to most Travel Insurance policies taken out with Just Travel Cover including single and annual trips.

All Travel Insurance policies at Just Travel Cover come with Covid-19 cover as standard. Covid-19 cover offers your protection against cancellation if you contract Covid-19 before your holiday and cannot travel as well as emergency medical expenses if you contract Covid-19 whilst abroad.

Golf Insurance with Cover for Medical Conditions

Don’t forget that as we work with a panel of insurers we can provide cover for hundreds of pre-existing medical conditions with no upper age limit. We advise to always check the policy wording to ensure that you have the appropriate level of cover for your needs and are aware of any exclusions that may apply. It is important that you declare all pre-existing medical conditions when getting Golf Travel Insurance. This way, you are covered should anything health-related go wrong on your golf trip. We cover more than golf clubs and equipment. We also offer protection for cancellations, cover for emergency medical expenses, including repatriation, should you need to return home quickly due to a medical emergency. Plus, with our 24/7 support, help is just a phone call away, providing peace of mind so you can focus on enjoying your game.

Is It Worth Getting Golf Cover Insurance?

Travel Insurance with golf extension protects any owned or hired golf equipment. The additional golf club insurance for travel will include the repair or replacement of golfing equipment that has been lost, stolen or damaged whilst on your trip. You will also be able to claim a set amount for the cost of hiring replacement golf equipment that was a result of accidental loss, theft or damage to your own golfing equipment during your golf break.

Not only this, Golf Cover Insurance also provides cover for loss of non-refundable green fees and some insurers offer cover for ‘Hole in One’. Always check your policy wording for your chosen insurer as cover varies by insurer and some policies contain exclusions.

Find the Perfect Match with Golf Insurance Comparison

Our Travel Insurance comparison tool allows you to compare from multiple insurers, all of which can provide the golf cover you are looking for. After answering a few questions about your age, medical history, destination, duration of trip and adding on our golf cover extension, we will only show you policies that are suitable for your travel requirements. Golf insurance comparison is made easy with Just Travel Cover.

Golf Trip Insurance

Travel insurance for your golf vacation.

A golf trip sounds rather benign to the inexperienced, but as peaceful as it might be to imagine the rolling greens of the golf course and sinking birdie shots, there are many things that can go wrong to sour the trip.

What if the airline loses or damages your golf clubs or other baggage? Many airlines will not reimburse travelers for loss or damage to such expensive equipment. Or, perhaps you paid your greens fees as part of a golf travel package, but the weather doesn’t cooperate and your trip is cancelled. If those fees were non-refundable, you just lost your money. Golf trip insurance can protect you.

With a golf trip insurance plan from RoamRight, your golf trip is protected:

  • Baggage coverage  for lost golf bags, clubs and shoes
  • Reimbursement for greens fees that are part of a golf trip package if your tee time is missed due to trip interruption or delay
  • Medical coverage  for golfing accidents or other illnesses or injuries
  • Trip Cancellation  and  Trip Interruption to cover costs of other unused, non-refundable deposits and payments like equipment rentals and lessons.

Golf Travel Insurance

Golf travel insurance: playing golf abroad.

Golf is a universal sport, and with so many great, accessible courses across the globe, it’s hardly a surprise that golf holidays remain ever popular. For peace of mind, it is worth considering golf travel insurance to ensure you’re protected.

What is golf travel insurance?

Golf travel insurance means you’ll be protected should the unexpected happen while you’re away.

Most standard travel insurance policies won’t provide the necessary level of cover you need for a golfing holiday, meaning you’ll often have to fork out extra to add golf clubs onto your policy.

Travel insurance from elsewhere may also not provide sufficient Public Liability, Golf Equipment Hire, or Dental Treatment cover.

However, specialist golf travel insurance with Golf Care takes care of this.

Why does a golfer need golf travel insurance?

Many regular travel insurers don’t provide the specific cover that golfers need once they venture beyond their local course. But at Golf Care , we understand exactly what you need.

As a regular golfer, your clubs and other golf equipment are your pride and joy, and we know you’ll probably want to take them with you on a golfing holiday, rather than hire equipment you’re not used to when you’re there.

Considering your clubs and golfing accessories may cost you a fair amount of money, it’s important to make sure they’re properly protected abroad with golf travel insurance.

If you decided not to take your clubs abroad with you, the last thing you want is to be wasting valuable playing time waiting for replacements—again, something which regular travel insurance rarely accounts for. That’s why through Golf Care, the cost of temporary equipment hire * is covered, to get you back out playing in no time.

While playing unfamiliar courses abroad is exciting, the unknown creates more opportunities for accidents. As such, golf travel insurance covers you for accidental damage to third party property, injury to another person while playing golf, or personal injury on the course.

What type of travel insurance does a golfer need?

The most essential parts of golf travel insurance are:

Equipment cover

This covers your clubs, bag and other golf accessories for theft, loss and damage. With Golf Care, you can purchase Equipment cover ranging from £1,500 to £7,500.

Personal Accident Cover

This protects your own personal welfare for up to £50,000 should you get seriously injured playing golf.

Public Liability

This covers your legal liability to third parties for personal injury or damage to property while playing golf. With Golf Care, you get £10m worth of Public Liability cover as standard.

Accidental Damage

This covers you in the event of loss or damage to the property of others while playing golf.

What does golf travel insurance cover?

With Golf Care, golf travel insurance can cover your clubs, bags and accessories** against loss, theft, and damage when you travel.

Cover is split into four levels according to your equipment value and the territories in which you want to be covered. The coverage breakdown is as follows:

Bronze Policy

Equipment cover up to £1,500

Public Liability up to £10m when playing in the UK, unless additional Worldwide cover is selected

Silver Policy

Equipment cover up to £2,000

Gold Policy

Equipment cover up to £3,500

Public Liability up to £10m when playing anywhere in Europe Personal Accident cover up to £50,000

Platinum Policy

Public Liability up to £10m when playing anywhere in the world Personal Accident cover up to £50,000

Regardless of which policy option you choose, we’ll replace your golf clubs on a ‘new-for-old’ basis if they were purchased new and are up to three years old, subject to satisfactory proof of ownership.

Items over three years old or not purchased new will be replaced on their indemnity value at the time of loss or damage.

How much does golf travel insurance cost?

The cost of your policy will depend on the level of cover you choose.

Policies through Golf Care start from as little as £27.72 per year. Get an online quote for your cover here .

Why choose Golf Care for golf travel insurance?

Golf Care was founded by golfers, for golfers. We understand your golfing needs better than anyone.

All golf travel insurance policies with Golf Care are underwritten by the Ripe Guarantee , meaning we won’t be beaten on price for the same level of cover anywhere else.

With every policy, you’ll also get:

  • 12 FREE golf balls
  • 3 FREE rounds of golf and ball marker
  • Exclusive competition hole-in-one bar bill cover

Get an online quote for your cover here .

* We will pay for equipment hire up to the limit stated in the insurance schedule, and the hired equipment must be comparable to the lost or damaged.

** Golf equipment includes your clubs, balls, bags, trolleys, carts, clothing, GPS devices and GPS watches, and other accessories purchased for playing golf.

The time for Europe or Worldwide cover is deemed to be from the time you leave your normal or temporary residence, place of work or education (whichever the later) whilst travelling to your overseas destination or accommodation until returning to your normal or temporary residence, place of work or education after the golfing event or holiday (whichever the earlier).

The Best Golf Club Travel Insurance

X

As a company of avid golfers, we love our clubs just as much as you love yours. So, we understand that your sticks aren’t just another piece of equipment, but they’re of great value to you, too. We also understand that the prospect of checking baggage at the airport can be nerve-wracking. After all, the thought of leaving your precious clubs in the hands of unknown baggage handlers can evoke a sense of unease and vulnerability.

Recognizing the anxiety that comes with entrusting your golf clubs to the uncertainties of travel, we emphasize the indispensable nature of golf club travel insurance. It becomes a reassuring ally in the face of these concerns, providing a layer of protection that extends beyond the uncertainties of airport handling. With golf club travel insurance, you not only safeguard your clubs from unforeseen mishaps but also alleviate the apprehension associated with parting ways with your prized possessions.

Protect Your Gear with Golf Club Travel Insurance

With Ship Sticks’ golf club travel insurance, protecting your clubs can be completed in just a few clicks. All golf club shipments come with $1,000 of complimentary coverage. Should you need to insure your bag for more, Ship Sticks offers up to $7,500 of value protection on domestic and international shipments for a small, nominal cost.

When selecting your preferred level of golf club travel insurance, Ship Sticks recommends selecting an option equal to your shipment’s overall value. While damage and loss are extremely uncommon, Ship Sticks hopes you’ll find comfort in knowing your clubs come with a minimum of $1,000 in golf club travel insurance, a service unmatched by any major airline or shipping competitor.

Should you wish to travel entirely bag-free on your golf trip, Ship Sticks makes it easy to ship your luggage as well. From carry-on baggage to oversized luggage, send everything you’ll need for your trip ahead of your arrival. $500 of complimentary insurance is included with all luggage shipments and, like golf clubs, you have the option to insure for up to $7,500.

Be sure to select your desired insurance amount while booking online. Or, if you’re booking over the phone, simply tell your booking agent what insurance amount you’d prefer. It’s just that easy!

In addition to golf club travel insurance, Ship Sticks also includes an on-time delivery guarantee, so your golf clubs arrive at the first tee before your tee time, every time. For even more peace of mind, each shipment is paired with a unique tracking ID. So, you’ll be able to follow the status of your sticks every step of the way.

In addition to golf club travel insurance, pay special attention to how you’re packing your golf clubs. Begin by covering clubheads with secure headcovers to prevent scratches and dings. Or, remove the club heads and stow them in a pocket of your golf bag if possible. We also recommend adding extra padding within the bag, such as golf clothing or towels to act as a buffer between the golf clubs sticking out of your bag. Consider adding a stiff arm to your bag, too, that will guard the top of your bag against impacts.

A meticulous packing approach not only protects your beloved clubs from potential damage but also contributes to a worry-free travel experience! Check out our guided video below for step-by-step packing instructions.

The importance of ensuring the safety and protection of your golf clubs during travel cannot be overstated. This is where golf club travel insurance becomes an indispensable companion on all your golf trips. With this insurance, you can travel with the confidence that your beloved clubs are shielded from unforeseen mishaps. If you’re interested in learning more about our golf club travel insurance, contact our customer support team, available seven days a week.

However, this is just a temporary measure. In the near future we will be able to offer this extra cover to golfers on our policies once more. Policies purchased before 5th May 2021 aren’t affected and your cover won’t change.

Golf holiday insurance to give you peace of mind.

More and more golf enthusiasts are taking a break from their local club and combining their love of sport with their love of travel, visiting unique and beautiful destinations around the world.

The UK is home to some of the world’s most famous and challenging golf courses. You can play a round on the Old Course at St Andrews, which is known as ‘the home of golf,’ or you can try one of the UK’s Ryder Cup courses, such as The Belfry or Celtic Manor.

But if you want to travel abroad, there are plenty of places to perfect your swing further afield. In mainland Europe, you can play the same courses as European Tour pros like Rory McIlroy; there’s Le Golf National in France and the famous Stadium Course at PGA Catalunya in Spain, for example.

Or, you can take the holiday of a lifetime and head across the Atlantic to play the finest courses the USA has to offer. You can literally walk in the footsteps of Tiger Woods at Pebble Beach or take on one of the most iconic golf shots in the world at TPC Sawgrass.

If you’re planning to escape on a golf break this year, in the UK or somewhere more exotic, make sure you buy golf holiday insurance before you travel. Our golf equipment insurance will help cover your essential items, including your beloved clubs, and protect you against risks such as cancellation, baggage loss and emergency medical expenses.

With golf holiday insurance from one of the world’s largest travel insurance and assistance companies, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy your trip. Our international and multilingual team of talented people are available to help 24/7, 365 days a year in the event of a medical emergency.

Below is some more information about our products, for which Terms and Conditions apply. Please visit the policy information hub for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! When you take out a golf travel insurance policy with Allianz Assistance, golf club cover is included.

With our golf travel insurance policies, cover is provided for your golf equipment. This includes your golf clubs, golf bag, golf trolley and golf shoes; you’re protected if this equipment is lost, damaged, stolen or delayed.

Although we include cover for golf as an activity on our Sports and Leisure travel insurance, opting for travel insurance including golf cover can protect you against the specific risks that are associated with golf holidays.

When you add golf cover to your travel insurance policy, it can help protect you if your golf equipment is lost, damaged, stolen or delayed during your trip. It can also pay for a loss of green fees if you have to cancel or cut short your trip, or if you cannot play golf due to an injury or illness during your trip.

If you choose not to add golf insurance to your policy, you’ll need to pay for replacement equipment; you’ll also have to pay green fees if you cannot play. Depending on how many rounds of golf you’re planning to play, these costs could run into thousands of pounds.

We offer two different types of golf travel insurance: Single Trip and Annual insurance.

If you’re only taking one golf holiday this year, you’ll find that our Single Trip travel insurance is best suited to your needs. Depending on the country of travel and duration of stay you choose, you’ll be protected in the UK, Europe, or further afield, for a maximum of 180 days.

But if you plan on taking multiple golf holidays this year, an Annual policy may be better suited to your needs. It can cover you for an unlimited number of trips, up to 31 days in duration over a 12-month period. As such, multi-trip policies can be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

How to ensure you have the right cover

Does your bank or credit card company provide cover.

Many bank accounts and credit cards come with some level of travel insurance cover. While some may be comprehensive, they may not cover you for everything you have planned whilst you’re away, particularly if you have adventurous plans or unusual excursions booked.

Make sure you look into the travel insurance policy that you have before every trip, to make sure it’s suitable for you and your plans.

Purchasing a holiday using a credit card means you are often protected by Consumer Protection cover. In most cases, it allows you to get your money returned to you if your provider defaults and you cannot travel.

Are you covered by ABTA or ATOL?

If you have booked a holiday through a tour operator or travel agent, it may be worth checking if you are covered by ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) or ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s License). This type of cover means that your package holiday is protected if, for example, the travel company providing your holiday arrangements or the travel agent themselves fail financially or close down.

Your travel agents will be able to tell you if your holiday is ABTA or ATOL protected. Alternatively, use the links provided to check your cover at home.

What is an EHIC or GHIC and what can it offer you?

Choose the perfect policy for you, with a range of cover options available.

Golf travel insurance

We know you’re not really that interested in travel insurance . We know you’re only buying it because you need it. Don’t worry – we want to make getting covered as quick and as simple as possible so you can get on and enjoy your golfing holiday.

What is covered with golf travel insurance?

With a golf travel insurance policy from InsureandGo, you can get cover for your golf equipment and your green fees, as well as everything else from trip cancellation to medical expenses. You’ll be covered while you’re away, even if you’re doing it for your entire trip.

Golf equipment cover

We cover up to £1,500 worth of golf equipment, with each item/pair insured up to £250. Equipment that can be covered in your golf policy includes:

  • Non-motorised trolleys

You’ll be able to claim for any items declared on your policy if they’re lost, damaged or stolen during your trip. Any item over the value of £100  may  be subject to a 10% deduction where you can’t show us with proof of purchase (like the the original receipts).

Green fees cover

You’ll be covered for up to £75 a day and up to £300 for a percentage of the cost of your green fees, where you can’t get a refund. These can include hiring golf equipment and tuition fees. We’ll cover you if you can’t play due to illness, injury, or if you have documents lost or stolen that prevent you from taking part.

Hole-in-one cover

Although insurance traditionally covers you if something unlucky happens, hole-in-one cover makes sure that, if you’re lucky enough to hit an ace, you won’t get stuck footing the entire bar bill!

Golf clubs around the world have it written into their club rules that anyone who hits a hole-in-one has to buy everyone (or at least their playing group) a round at the clubhouse. Our hole-in-one cover could save you a pretty penny by offering up to £100 towards the costs.

When you claim, you must obtain a written report from the golf club secretary confirming the competition details counter signed by your playing partner together with the original certified score card. You must also get receipts from the golf club for expenditure incurred immediately following your hole-in-one.

For more details about all parts of our golf travel insurance, please see our  policy documents page .

If you’re planning on more than golfing on your holiday, we cover over 50 sports and activities as standard. Check out which  activities you’ll be covered for online  or in our policy documents.

  • Unlimited emergency medical expenses available on Black level policies.
  • Based on 2,050 responses, correct as of 22/01/2024

7 international destinations perfect for a golf trip.

You’ve played some of the best golf courses in the United States . Now, you’re looking to pack your clubs, rally some friends, and hit the links on an international golf trip. But which parts of the world boast the best collection of golf courses?

Top Golf Destinations

From Latin America to the South Pacific — and, of course, Scotland — here’s a list of seven international destinations perfect for a golf trip.

1. Scotland: The Birthplace of Golf

The famous Swilcan bridge on the 18th hole of the Old Course links in St Andrews, Scotland. Many ... [+] famous golfers have traditionally posed for photographs on this bridge at the end of their tournament rounds, thanking the crowds for their support. The Royal & Ancient clubhouse can be seen towards the left of the background.

The Scottish seaside town of St. Andrews is known around the world as the birthplace of golf, and the iconic Old Course headlines most golfers’ bucket lists. Book a stay at the golf-inspired Rusacks St Andrews , where rooms come with views of the hallowed turf.

Even if you can’t score a tee time at the Old Course, there’s plenty more courses beckoning. In fact, Scotland has more golf courses per person than anywhere else in the world. From the links of Fife to courses along the dunes of Aberdeenshire’s coast, the country has more than 550 courses.

Scotland’s weather is known to fluctuate, but the golf season is typically April to September.

2. Ireland: A Links Paradise

The top 10 richest people in the world (may 2024), at the heart of the ai pc battle lies the npu, perfect storm sparks sudden bitcoin price crash under 60 000 as ethereum xrp and crypto brace for shock fed flip.

Adare Manor in Ireland.

Ireland is nicknamed the “green of dreams” and the island is home to more than 400 golf clubs. A third of the world’s natural links courses are here, and more than 240,000 golfers make the pilgrimage to Ireland each year to play on the unforgiving fairways.

In County Limerick, Adare Manor is a coveted stay for golfers. The championship golf course designed by golf architect Tom Fazio will host the 2027 Ryder cup.

While most courses are open all year round, the best time for Ireland golf trips is from April to October. In peak summer, it stays light out until 10 p.m., which means you can play a couple of rounds and make the most of your golf vacation.

3. Fiji: Luxury Private Island Greens

Denaru Golf & Racquet Club

Fiji is a draw for all types of vacationers, from honeymooners to scuba divers. But it’s also a golfer’s paradise in the South Pacific, with more than a dozen courses scattered across the islands and stunning fairways lined with palm trees.

For those coming for golf, Viti Levu, the main island, is home to three championship courses: Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course, which is located at the InterContinental Resort and comes with Pacific Ocean views, Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, and The Pearl South Pacific Golf Course.

Fun fact: The country has even produced one of the world’s top golfers, Vijay Singh, who fell in love with the game at the Nadi Airport Golf Course.

4. New Zealand: Dramatic Scenery

Te Arai Links in Tomarata, New Zealand

In New Zealand, golf is the sport with the highest participation among both men and women. The country has more than 400 golf courses, and the dramatic landscapes — from craggy, isolated coastlines tracing the greens to soaring mountains in the alpine areas — make it one of the most idyllic destinations for golfers.

Renowned architect Tom Doak has said “no country has seen its golf courses improve more over the past 20 years than New Zealand.” One of his famous New Zealand courses is Cape Kidnappers, which is perched above the ocean on clifftops, and built on ridge-and-valley landscape.

A 90 minute drive from Auckland (or 25 minutes via helicopter), Te Arai Links , which has two links golf courses along the coastline is also a sought-after destination. One course was designed by Doak, and the other is from Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. In between tee times, the area is known for its surf breaks and lively nearby market towns, Mangawhai and Matakana, as well as its vineyards and olive groves.

October through April is considered high season, and golfers will pay less the other times of year.

5. Mexico: Mountain, Desert And Ocean Landscapes

Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto

Los Cabos and the Baja Peninsula have long dominated as one of the best golf destinations in not just Latin America, but the world, thanks to its mountain-desert-ocean landscape, gentle sea breezes, and a collection of cacti-studded courses designed by some of the world’s greatest golf architects, like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman and Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

In Loreto, which is on the Eastern coast of Baja California Peninsula, golfers can tee off in a UNESCO World Heritage site when they play a round at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto by Danzante Bay, which overlooks the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. Travelers can book packages Unlimited Golf or Spa that comes with unlimited rounds for three days.

Golf continues to grow and get better throughout Mexico, with more than 200 courses to play. Beyond the Baja Peninsula, some other top golf spots in Mexico include the courses dotting the Pacific Coastline and in the Riviera Maya, like El Camaleón, an 18-hole, Greg Norman-designed course that moves through tropical jungle, mangroves, and past freshwater canals. It’s also the first PGA Tour Course in Latin America.

6. Vietnam: A Fast-Growing Golf Destination

Hoiana Shores in Vietnam

For golfers looking for the next ‘it’ destination, turn your attention to Vietnam, where some of the world’s best golf architects are designing courses in the mountains, jungles, and along its coastline. Before 2020, there were about 80 golf courses in Vietnam, many attached to luxury resorts. By 2025, more than 200 courses will be built out.

Golfers can find year-round golf in Vietnam, heading into the highlands like Dalat for a cool mist and mountain breezes and hitting and booking tee times in Ho Chi Minh City and Southern Vietnam throughout the year. November to April is dry and cool in Northern Vietnam, and the same goes for Central Vietnam from February to May.

Hoina Shores Golf Club , designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is a must-play for any golf enthusiast visiting Vietnam. It’s located within the $4 billion Hoiana Casino and Resort development on the Vietnamese coast south of Danang.

7. Mauritius: Bucket List Golf Destination

Anahita Golf Club

Mauritius is known for its stunning beaches and lush rainforests and unofficial world wonders like the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark, a sand dune bursting with colors. But this island in the Indian Ocean also has a history of golf. The tourism office claims that in 1844, when it was under British rule, Mauritius was the third country in the world to be introduced to the sport and Gymkhana Golf Club was the fourth country club in the world where golf was played

Today, Mauritius has 10 18-hole courses and three 9-hole golf courses, including the bucket-list worthy Iles aux Cerfs Golf Club at Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius . Golfers take a complimentary boat shuttle to the golf course where 18 holes come with scenic ocean views. The resort’s second course is Anahita Golf Club, which is set on a former sugar plantation and backed by mountains and fringed by a lagoon.

AIG Travel Guard insurance review: What you need to know

Whether you need an annual plan or a policy for a last-minute trip, travel guard can deliver..

thumbnail

Travel Guard is one of CNBC Select 's picks for best travel insurance , thanks to its wide range of customizable policies. But are any of them right for you? Below, we review the provider and its offers and how they compare to the competition to help you choose the right travel insurance for your next trip.

Travel Guard review

Other insurance offered, how it compares, bottom line, travel guard® travel insurance.

The best way to estimate your costs is to request a quote

Policy highlights

Travel Guard offers a variety of plans to suit travel ranging from road trips to long cruises. For air travelers, Travel Guard can help assist with tracking baggage or covering lost or delayed baggage.

24/7 assistance available

  • A variety of plans are available to help cover different types of trips
  • Not all products are available for purchase online

Travel Guard® is a global travel insurance provider specializing in plans for leisure and business travelers. Its online travel insurance packages include five options, from basic and last-minute trip coverage to more comprehensive plans. This allows travelers to pick a plan that best matches their situation.

For example, budget-minded travelers might go for the Essential Plan which offers basic protections, such as trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance, coverage for lost, damaged and delayed baggage, and medical, evacuation and death coverage.

On the other hand, the Deluxe Plan — the most comprehensive option — adds such extras as missed connection coverage, security evacuation, travel inconvenience benefits and more. It also boosts high limits for essential coverages.

Last-minute travelers can opt for the Pack N' Go Plan which only includes certain post-departure coverages. Or, if you travel often, the Annual Plan can cover your trips throughout the year.

Finally, Travel Guard offers "offline" travel insurance packages, meaning you'll have to call if you're looking for a specialty plan.

Coverage types

Depending on the plan, here are the types of protection Travel Guard can include in your package:

  • Trip cancellations
  • Trip interruption
  • Baggage coverage
  • Baggage delay
  • Travel medical expenses
  • Travel inconvenience benefits (reimbursement for such situations as runway delays, cruise diversion and other unforeseen situations)
  • Medical evacuation
  • Trip Saver (reimbursement for meals, hotels and transportation if you need to begin your trip sooner due to weather or airline changes)
  • Trip exchange (reimbursement in case you have to cancel your trip and book a new one due to covered unforeseen circumstances)
  • Security evacuation (due to a riot or civil disorder)
  • Flight guard (coverage for accidental death or dismemberment that occurs when traveling by plane)
  • Pre-existing medical conditions exclusion waiver

You can also customize your plan with add-ons, such as car rental insurance and "cancel for any reason" coverage .

Travel Guard landed on our list of the best travel insurance companies thanks to its variety of coverage. With plenty of options to choose from, both online and offline, it's easy to build a policy that meets your needs.

Travel Guard also features 24-hour concierge services that you can use to book a new flight in case of an emergency or delay.

The provider's website also offers informational resources — here, you can check travel news, read safety tips and find general travel advice. Additionally, the website lets you modify your plan, file a claim and check its status, or apply for a voucher or refund.

As of writing, Travel Guard doesn't offer any discounts. That's common for travel insurance — you're more likely to find deals when shopping for other types of insurance, such as home and auto insurance .

Travel Guard is a portfolio of travel insurance and travel-related services offered by AIG Travel, a member of American International Group (AIG). AIG also offers life insurance and a variety of business insurance products.

Travel Guard makes it easy to get a travel insurance policy customized to your needs. But before you purchase coverage, it's always a good idea to shop around.

For example, if you're going on a cruise, you might want to look at Nationwide Travel Insurance . The provider advertises cruise-specific insurance with three plan options available. This type of coverage is designed with issues unique to cruises in mind — from ship-based breakdowns to missed pre-pard excursions.

If you're planning a more active trip filled with rock climbing or sky diving, Berkshire Hathaway offers the AdrenalineCare® plan which features coverage for unforeseen costs that result from participating in extreme sports on your trip, as well as reimbursement for sporting equipment delay. Pre-existing conditions are covered under this plan (if you meet qualifying conditions).

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has multiple plans to cover vacations from luxury travel to adventure travel. The brand's LuxuryCare offers the highest limits of travel insurance coverage offered by the company. Quotes and policies are available online.

As you can see, offerings vary by provider. It can be helpful to compare multiple companies and the plans they offer to find what works best for you. It's even better if you gather several quotes to ensure you're getting a good price for your policy.

Money matters — so make the most of it. Get expert tips, strategies, news and everything else you need to maximize your money, right to your inbox.  Sign up here .

Travel Guard offers plenty of ways to customize your policy, making it a solid choice for travel insurance. You can also access additional options by giving Travel Guard a call. However, make sure to check out other travel insurance companies too — comparison shopping is essential when picking any type of financial product.

Understanding travel insurance for seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

You can read more about our insurance rating methodology here.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.
