Your guide to Chicago house music: history, venues, events, and more

Last updated on September 13, 2023 by Rosalind Cummings-Yeates

Chicago boasts a rich musical history and is famous for many sonic innovations including gospel music , drill, Chicago-style blues — and house music.

Thanks to a massive international following, some music fans don’t realize that Chicago is where house music was born. Developed by Black DJs during the late 1970s and ‘80s, Chicago house music exploded from an underground dance scene into a worldwide phenomenon.

Learn more about Chicago’s house music legacy and where to experience it for yourself.

Chicago house music history

In 1977, DJ Frankie Knuckles moved to Chicago to become the musical director of a new club. The venue was located inside a former factory in an isolated stretch of the West Loop neighborhood. The club was called The Warehouse , a location that would go on to become the birthplace of house music and an official Chicago landmark.

Frankie Knuckles played a creative mix of disco, funk, and European synth tunes spliced with gospel influences, drum machines, and electronic synthesizers. The crowd was mostly Black, Latino, and gay and they came to dance in a space free from racism and homophobia.

House Music Festival

The music came to be known as house music as a reference to the club that started it all. Soon, the new style (defined as songs with 4/4 rhythms and an upbeat dance tempo laced with electronic drum machines and a soulful chorus) started popping up all over lounges and house parties on the city’s south side.

While Frankie Knuckles is known as the godfather of house music, other Chicago pioneers included Jesse Saunders (credited with producing the first house music record sold to the public), Marshall Jefferson, Farley “Jackmaster” Keith, Ron Hardy, and Steve “Silk” Hurley.

By the time Frankie Knuckles left The Warehouse in 1983, house music was being played regularly on Chicago radio stations. It expanded to cities like Detroit, New York, London, and eventually the rest of the world.

Chicago house music venues and clubs

Smartbar holds a strong legacy in the Chicago house scene. Opened in 1982, this tiny Wrigleyville basement club hosted Frankie Knuckles as its first DJ. Today, you’ll hear an assortment of house DJs from all over the world play, including legendary Chicago house DJ Derrick Carter, who maintains a residency at Smartbar.

Berlin is a historic LGBTQ+ club in the Lakeview community that has been playing a mix of house and other dance genres since its opening in 1983. Noted for drag shows and cutting-edge dance styles, Berlin is one of the city’s best clubs for diverse house mixes.

Spybar is a subterranean nightclub that hosts international artists spinning a selection of techno and house music. This upscale River North spot features a rotating line-up of dance DJs from all over the world.

Stony Island Arts Bank offers a close-up view of house music history through Frankie Knuckles’ personal vinyl collection. The Grammy-award-winning artist cataloged roughly 5,000 records that chronicle the development of house music. A resident DJ incorporates selections from the collection in regular public shows.

Chosen Few Picnic is the highlight of the year for house heads. This family-reunion-style event unfolds each July in Jackson Park and features over 12 hours of nonstop house music by the south side DJs who helped create it.

My House Music Festival is a two-day summer music fest in Harrison Park in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. The event includes dozens of house DJs, including iconic pioneers like Derrick Carter and Marshall Jefferson, plus local food, merch, and art.

Chicago: Home of House

The Catacombs

May 8, 2021 – July 03, 2021

Chicago is the Mecca for House music. Conceived in bedrooms and basements from the minds of Black and Latino youth on Chicago’s south and west sides, the energy, the music, and the dance built the critical foundation that became Chicago House. The scene was inclusive, eclectic and historic. This local invention is now an international movement influencing everything from Detroit Techno to electronic dance music (EDM) to pop and rock remixes.

Presented by Epiphany Center for the Arts, the Design Museum of Chicago , Connect Gallery , The Silver Room , City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events , The Vintage House Show on WNUR and The Modern Dance Music Research and Archiving Foundation . This exhibition builds on the foundation of Move Your Body: The Evolution of HOUSE Music in 2015 at the Chicago Cultural Center, designed by Schedler Brennan Design + Consulting .

Sponsored by One Design Company .

Chicago House Music Festival and Conference 2022: Everything in One Place

The 2022 Chicago House Music Festival and Conference is not in one place, or on one day. Instead, it’s a series of events with a live show in Millennium Park on Friday September 16 as the linchpin tying it together.

The “conference” part starts with what organizers call a “House Music Symposium” on Thursday, September 15 starting at 5pm at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago (915 E. 60th Street.) Programmed and hosted in collaboration with Vintage House Show, the symposium “will explore the history, culture and business of House music” with panelists including Terry Hunter , Maurice Joshua , Michaelangelo Matos and Tiffany Walden.

The main performance of the festival is on Friday, September 16 at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park (201 E. Randolph) featuring performances by Ten City , Josh Milan , a celebration of Robert Williams and The Chosen Few DJs . The show runs from 5:30pm to 9pm.

On Saturday, September 17 at 3pm, the Rebuild Foundation at Kenwood Gardens (6929 S. Kenwood Ave) hosts Soul Liberation: A Frankie Knuckles House Music Celebration featuring sets by Duane Powell, Greg Gray and Celeste Alexander and the “premiere of My Frankie: Reflections on the Music and Life of Frankie Knuckles , a short documentary and accompanying panel discussion, and “community resources that honor Frankie’s pioneering curation of liberatory space through sound.”

At 6pm through midnight, the House Club Tour will visit venues across the city.

On Sunday, September 18 from 3pm to 6pm, the focus shifts back to the Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park for Open The Circle’s Footwork Dance Down, “a non-profit focusing on community organizing and racial justice through the art.”

Everything You Need to Know About Chicago House Music

Chicago House Music MOBILE II

To honor the very birthplace of house music, we decided to give you a rundown on the Chicago house music essentials. Chicago, the Windy City , is not just known for its stunning skyline and rich cultural heritage but also for birthing a musical movement that would revolutionize the world. Rooted in the late 1970s and early 1980s, this genre has been instrumental in shaping the global electronic dance music landscape. From the underground clubs to the international stage, Chicago house music has not only left a permanent mark but continues to inspire and evolve. In this article, we'll delve into the history of Chicago house music and its profound impact on the broader electronic music scene.

RELATED: Lofi House: Its History and Modern Relevance

The Birth of Chicago House Music

Chicago house music emerged from the vibrant and diverse nightlife of Chicago, particularly in the African-American and LGBTQ+ communities. DJs and producers like Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard, and Marshall Jefferson were pioneers, experimenting with new electronic instruments and sounds to create something fresh and exciting.

1984 marked a pivotal moment in Chicago's music history when Frankie Knuckles released "Your Love." This iconic track laid the foundation for what would become the unmistakable Chicago house sound. Characterized by its thumping 4/4 beat, soulful vocals, and hypnotic synthesizers, Chicago house music was an infectious blend of disco, funk, and electronic elements.

Chicago's Impact on House Music Worldwide

Chicago house music quickly transcended its local roots and spread like wildfire across the globe. The city's impact on house music, in general, is immeasurable. It provided the blueprint for countless sub-genres and styles, influencing artists and producers on an international scale.

Acid House: Chicago introduced the world to the distinctive "acid" sound, with tracks like Phuture's "Acid Tracks" in 1987. This genre later evolved into Acid House, with squelchy, psychedelic synth lines that continue to influence electronic music to this day.

Deep House: Larry Heard, also known as Mr. Fingers, pioneered deep house with tracks like "Can You Feel It" in 1986. The genre's laid-back, soulful vibes have had a lasting impact on dance music worldwide.

Garage House: Frankie Knuckles' legendary club, The Warehouse, gave birth to the term "house music." His work, including "Tears" in 1989, played a pivotal role in shaping garage house, which emphasizes powerful vocals and gospel-inspired melodies.

Techno: Although Detroit is typically credited with techno's birth, the influence of Chicago house music cannot be ignored. Jeff Mills and Derrick May, two Detroit techno pioneers, were inspired by the energy and innovation of Chicago's scene.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour inscribes Chicago as the mecca of house music

house music tour chicago

At Soldier Field on a misty Saturday night, with nearly 50,000 fans filling the arena, Beyoncé and her dancers walk off the stage for what seems to be an intermission as the screen goes black.

“In the beginning, there was Jack, and Jack had a groove,” Chicago house pioneer Chuck Robert’s voice omnisciently proclaims while the lyrics lit up the stage.

The crowd roars, because this is Chicago, the mecca of house music. In the show, Roberts’s voice booms with the gravity of God in the Old Testament, embodying the blurred line between the Black church and house music.

“And from this groove came the groove of all grooves. And while one day, viciously throwing down on his box, Jack boldly declared, “Let there be house!” And house music was born. I am the creator, and this is my house!” Roberts voice trails off into the Motherboard, a segment which takes audiences on an otherworldly ride from womb to birth.

After witnessing the Renaissance World Tour in Chicago this past weekend, one thing is undeniably true: Beyoncé has forever inscribed Chicago’s rightful place in global music history as the foundation of house music. The global superstar flawlessly melded Afrofuturism and Black ballroom with iconic house tracks that not only pay homage to the vanguards of each, but exalts their influence on the very fabric of her Grammy Award-winning album, Renaissance .

One of those commanding voices is Chuck Roberts, nicknamed “the voice of house music.” His electrifying sermon from the 1987 Rhythm Controll track, “My House,” serves as a visual interlude in the show.

“I’m in awe of the situation. I’m humbled by it,” Roberts said. “Just like with that speech, nobody had any idea that it would take on legs and walk through the places that it’s gone. Same thing with this situation with Beyoncé. Nobody saw this coming, but it’s a blessing. And I think it’s a big win for the house community.”

Jack, or jackin’, is an endearing house term to describe the style of dancing associated with house music in the 1980s. The dance is a bend of the knee and thrusting motion that moves up into the torso with free-flowing arm movements.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chuck Roberts (@inthebeginning_chuckroberts)

“You want to know who is Jack, and what is it that Jack does?” Roberts tells The TRiiBE. “Jack is the one that gives you the power to do the snake. Jack is the one who gives you the key to the wiggly worm. Jack is the one that can bring nations and nations and nations of all Jackers together under one house. That’s who Jack is, and that’s what Jack does.”

Back in the spring, Beyoncé’s team reached out to Roberts’s music publisher and asked how they’d feel about her using “My House” in the show. He was shocked, but not surprised, that she reached out to use the track.

“Beyoncé has given us a platform that we wouldn’t have had without her or somebody like her. I’ll reiterate, we are eternally grateful to her because she’s given us that exposure to15-year-olds who don’t really know anything about house music, [don’t] understand the origins or really what house music is,” Roberts said. “It’s a blessing. People who wouldn’t normally even think about dabbling in house music are like, ‘wow. We heard that at the concert. Let me see what this thing is.’ They see Jack up on the screen and [they’re] going home to Google ‘Jack.’”

Roberts grew up in Holy City, off 16th Street, on Chicago’s West Side. He reminisced about the 1980s and a club called The Factory, on Madison Street in West Garfield Park. There was a studio inside the building, where he produced music.

“I’m from the church,” Roberts said. “The lyrics from the song came from what I saw the effect that [house music] had on people. It brought people together who normally wouldn’t have any kind of affiliation at all. Different people from different walks of life.”

At the time, Roberts recalled, teens and young adults from all over Chicago and its surrounding suburbs were coming to The Factory for its house parties. Regardless of race or socio-economic status, house music created a welcoming space for everyone, and The Factory was representative of that.

“House music lets you be you,” Roberts said. “People who didn’t have anything in common ended up being friends and meeting at this place. The house music was that infectious.”

He even recalled seeing rival gang members put their issues aside to party together at The Factory.

“The same guys who were gang rivals [and] couldn’t be in the club at the same time, when the house music hit, these same guys [are] on the floor jacking. I’m talking about gang leaders, the drug pushers, the regular school kids, the Catholic school kids, everybody,” Roberts said. “On the West Side, people normally say well, you can’t come over here on Saturday night. It wasn’t none of that. People look forward to getting together to get into that music and get into that Jack. That Jack is something else, baby.”

Over time, Roberts’s “My House” sermon started to reach the masses. DJs across the country were playing it. In 1988, foundational house producer Larry Heard — a.k.a. Mr. Fingers — sampled the speech on his remix, “Can You Feel It.” The latter track has been featured on Rolling Stone’s “200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time,” and  Pitchfork’s “200 Best Songs of the 1980s.”

He later signed a deal with ZYX Records in Germany, and placed his sermon on the 1990 Ecstasy track, “This Is My House.”

“The record went double platinum. A lot of people don’t know that,” Roberts said. “That’s when we kind of figured out there’s something going on with this thing.”

Today, his “My House” speech is one of the most sampled in house music history. Real househeads already know the global impact of house music, which makes Beyoncé’s acknowledgement even more sweet.

“Hopefully more people will see the value in this and we’ll be able to bring other genres and people into this as well,” Roberts said about “My House” being included in the Renaissance World Tour. “Because house music, it’s a feeling. It’s not just a genre of music. It’s a way of being. It’s a way of life. House music is completely different from any other music.”

It's hard to believe that Brigitte Calls Me Baby frontman Wes Leavins grew up in a quiet city in east Texas.

Leavins has the kind of swoon-worthy voice and on-stage swagger that suggests he was always destined for bright lights and throngs of screaming fans. Now based in Chicago, Leavins and his band are taking over stages with their debut EP, This House is Made of Corners , plus the much-anticipated full-length that's on the way.

In this session, Leavins talks about growing up in Port Arthur, Texas, and the two Elvis -related opportunities that helped kick off his music career. He also talks about being called "baby" by the world's most famous Brigitte.

Aerosmith will be back in the saddle again this fall.

The veteran rockers, who postponed their Peace Out farewell tour after only a few shows in September, will return for a 40-date run starting Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh. The tour includes a rescheduled Chicago date on Jan. 19 at the United Center.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates, while new tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday via ticketmaster.com . For those who previously purchased tickets and cannot attend the rescheduled concerts, refunds will be available at point of purchase.

As with the original dates, The Black Crowes will open for Aerosmith.

After playing only a handful of concerts in September, the “Walk This Way” heroes had to hit pause after singer Steven Tyler damaged his vocal cords. He also fractured his larynx and was given doctor’s orders not to sing for 30 days.

But Aerosmith opted to give Tyler ample time to recuperate and scuttled all of its shows until 2024.

The wiry frontman, known for his searing rock yowls, said at the time that the injury occurred at a Sept. 10 show in New York and that the vocal cord damage “led to subsequent bleeding.”
