Just wondering how many people are on the bus? Is it really crowded?

We had about 35 people on our bus. They normally are not filled to capacity. Hope this helps. Happy travels.

What can I say, they are the best. I've been on other bus tours and they blow them all away. We had flight problems our first day and I called them to let them know. On their own they set up a private tour of Mt. Rushmore for both me and my father. They were in contact with me throughout whole flight in problems. Our tour guide Tom was awesome, funny and very knowledgeable. Any issues he handled for us. Out bus drive Ray was very professional and took pride in his job. They have made a customer for life. I really appreciate what they did and answered the phone at all hours to help us. Thank you so much

Just got back from Costa Rica, with Alejandra Guevara as our tourguide and Rollo as our busdriver. This was a wonderful trip and I credit it all to Alejandra! Her knowledge, her eloquence of sharing that info, we had a few health issues crop up with our fellow travelers, she handled it with expertise and empathy. Having the layover of three days at the Barcelo Gamble Resort was a nice touch to relax and enjoy the resorts amenities and be off the bus for a bit. Good staff, welcoming and helpful, good food, and lovely grounds were found there. We were cautioned this was not the usual resort and it was older, it was fine. They only issue was the rooms could have used a deeper cleaning and we had to ask for face cloths and towels each day to have enough. That was minor compared to the experience we had traveling in this wonderful country. I would recommend this Caravan trip to all who want to travel to Central America. We were well taken care off, superior customer service.

Fantastic tours at a very affordable price point. The support from the office in Chicago when anything goes amiss is fast, efficient and memorable. Their efforts to please their tour passengers over the years has helped build their tremendously-loyal following.

This has been my third Caravan Tour and my husband has celiac and a shout out to our tour director Tom who was truly concerned about his restriction in advocating this situation as well as giving us advice and tips on the trip. Also Joel our bus driver with a spotless bus and getting us to our destinations timely. A great group of people. I have made friends on other trips who I still have but this group is special. Thank you so much Tom and Lisa frim the BROMLEY Market and caravan for a great dinner. Your friend Laura Bisignano

First time tour with Caravan and was not disappointed. After waiting 3 years for our tour to get available post COVID it was great to finally get on the road. The tour hit a lot of the highlights through the canyons and parks and was as enjoyable and relaxing as a tour could be. 2 nights per hotel stay gave us time to explore on our own and chose our meals at our times. We only had 27 people on the tour so the bus was wide open and all the on/off/luggage/"trading post" breaks moved quickly due to the smaller group. A big shout out to our guide Captain Kirk who filled us in with great info on upcoming stops as well as knowing when to give us quiet time with either a movie or music on the bus. His humor, sense of adventure and openness made him fit in with our active and fun group and saying goodbye was difficult for all of us. Will definitely consider a tour with this company again.

I requested 4 travel brochure 9 of my friends were interested in 2 tours you offer. The Grand Canyon tour as well as the New England Fall Colors tour. We wanted both this fall. I sent the brochure request 2 months ago. We were coming from different parts of the country. None of us received brochures. I called Caravan 2 days ago and was told there were no brochure's for 2023 tour season and probably no brochure's for 2024. For those of us that took the time to request your brochure. Caravan should have been courteous enough to have email us, letting us know there were no brochures coming. I called today to reconfirm as to the status of brochures for your 2024 season. I spoke with Lydia she informed me that we are now in the digital age and could have to book online. The have traveled on your tours, the reason I have is because of your beautiful brochures, that I can read and study at my leisure. Making plans with friends from all parts of the country to meet for these tours. To now have to go online to look at, study & decide while front of a computer screen for 9 people, is disappointing to say the least. Good Customer Service, I don't think so......

Mexico's copper canyon tour - It was a very disappointing tour by Caravan. I would not recommend this tour to anyone. The booklet says it is a 7 hour bus ride from El Paso to Creel where the train departs. In reality it was a 12.5 to 13 hour bus ride. It was very uncomfortable and we did it all in one day. Food was well below average , there was no options for Vegetarian food , it was was very bland and poor. They did not even have a welcome dinner on the first night in El Paso. Hotels were nice. The train ride was very uncomfortable where the heating was not working and our Executive class coach had very dirty windows where we could not see the Copper canyon from our windows. Restaurant selection was average and in many cases they provided cold lunch boxes on the train ride. Overall this trip was not worth it ... our guide was average .

Caravan Tours.... Sedona, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Lake Powell, Bryce, and Zion. This is our 6th Caravan Tour and 1st in the USA and we had a fun trip with enjoyable sites and plenty of coach time. Hotels are satisfactory for the cost but expect parking lot or rear views from your room. Most days start with luggage out at 7:00 and a departure at 8:00 following the complimentary breakfast. There was considerable traffic in Sedona accompanied with lots of people. Our 20-person tour group stayed in the Maswik Lodge at the Grand Canyon and we had complimentary breakfast there and dinner at the Arizona Restaurant. The Arizona is quiet expensive if you are on your own. We were lucky and spotted 4 California Condors at Bright Angel Trail. Monument Valley was fun while riding on the back of the seated pickup with our Navajo Indian guide who sang songs to us in her native language. I'm still trying to figure out why we stayed at Lake Powell since there is little to keep one occupied. We did take a boat trip to Glen Falls Dam, however. Bryce Canyon is interesting with spectacular views of the "hoodoos" but pales in comparison to Zion where we walked the Riverwalk Trail and the Grotto Trail. during the Zion adventure we stayed for two nights at the Fairview Inn in virgin, Utah. The hotel is very nice but located 30 minutes from Zion NP. There are no convenience stores within several miles and the nearest restaurant is over a mile away. The Fairview does not have a restaurant that serves lunch or dinner. God only knows why Caravan did not book the group at Springdale just outside of Zion and full of hotels and restaurants. Our trip ended in Las Vegas with a quick trip down "The Strip", and the group was deposited at the airport at 10:30. We chose to rent a car and drove south to Primm to see the Bonnie and Clyde "murder car" at Buffalo Bill's and returned to see Hoover Dam. Caravan trips are fun and certainly worth the cost. Our trip was $1695 and we went in early May before a cost increase...and, the summer crowds arriving.

Great group of people on the bus. We were told to sit by family/friends on first day because there would be a rotation on the bus throughout the tour. This allows family to remain together as the rotation occurs. After the first rotation we were put in the back away from our family?! Other groups seemed to remain together? There were people who always got the very back because they needed two seats. Unfortunately, one of which was coughing so much that other passengers were constantly offering cough drops. She refused and said she had them. Adding to the problem, she wouldn't wear a mask. Halfway, she felt too sick to continue and supposedly tested negative. Asymptomatic or just not showing yet, she went home. Since we were in the back during most rotations, we both tested positive when home. Fortunately, my other family, who we should have been with were never stat near us are fine. Our first Caravan tour was on a very nice bus. On this tour the bus was run down, less quality/functionality. Some seats were broken and many seatbelts didn't work. Sadly this is our last trip using Caravan. Save up some money and splurge on a better company.

We just got back from our second Caravan Tour. In 2020 we went to Costa Rica. This year, we went to Panama. Both tours were fantastic. I highly recommend both of these and Caravan. I love that all their tours have a highly knowledgeable tour guide and a great bus driver. You stay at lovely hotels and eat delicious food. I also love that everything is included in these tours other than your air fare. The meals are buffet style, so you can try a little of everything and go back for more of your favorite items at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The excursions are fantastic. You see some extraordinary things and learn a great deal about the culture of the country and the various cities/communities you visit. They also have some wonderful entertainment one or two nights of your trip. The people on these tours have all been very friendly and fun to be around. We are already trying to decide which Caravan tour we want to do next.

About Caravan Tours

Caravan Tours began selling fully escorted tours in 1952. We have been under the same management and ownership ever since. In 1965, Roger Mudd hosted a two hours CBS TV special on Caravan Tours. This TV production took about one month to make and was so successful it inspired the 1968 romantic comedy movie “If it’s Tuesday this must be Belgium.” In the early 50’s the Mayor of Dublin presented Caravan with the Key to Dublin for bringing the first American tour to the city after WWII. Since then Caravan has been recognized as a pioneer in travel.

"I took the tour to see the nature and beauty of Costa Rica. It was beyond my expectations. Several friends had recommended this Caravan tour to me and now I am ready to recommend your company to others." Mrs. D.T., Story, Wyoming
"This was the best vacation I've had. It is the only way to see Costa Rica." Ms. P.H., Plano, Texas
"The sights were absolutely fabulous! We visited all the places we were interested in seeing. This was an exceptional tour at an exceptional price. The guides were very eco-minded. We received a good education from them and their passion for preserving their environment was contagious. We totally get it. Your Costa Rican tour was awesome." Mr. & Mrs. B.H., Burton, Michigan
"The superior lodging and food made our concerns seem silly. We found all the hotels clean and modern. We always try to support local artists when we travel, so we were delighted to visit Sarchi with its oxcart factory and its shop with an extensive selection of goods made in Costa Rica. We enjoyed the spectacular and clean pools at Baldi Hot Springs, cruising the Rio Frio; the focus on flora and fauna attracted us to this trip in the first place." Mr. & Mrs. M.C., Kenai, Arkansas
"I was in awe. I was in Costa Rica on vacation. Couldn’t have asked for a better ride from our driver. A first class guy. My first Caravan trip and I would recommend you guys to anyone." Mr. H.T., Waterloo, Illinois
"It is almost impossible to visit a country in one week, but Caravan is doing a wonderful job in Costa Rica. Food was incredible, very fresh, great variety and plentiful. Love all activities. Got to see all birds and animals including the elusive sloth. We had a smooth ride, everything was just wonderful." Ms. V.N., Terrytown, Louisiana
"I definitely want you to know our feeling about this tour considering it is one of if not the best tours we have ever taken. Every hotel was very good with outstanding locations. The efficiency that Caravan developed in hotel check-in was easy and fast. The sightseeing was outstanding for sure. We had been to Costa Rica previously and this was by far superior by the extensive destinations geographically seeing most of the country that tourists would be interested in. This coupled with the extremely skilled guide made it superior to what we had seen before. He was so very knowledgeable concerning every possible thing we were witnessing and much more. In addition, he has an extremely entertaining wit. We both had a wonderful time and were amazed at all we got for the $’s." Mr. & Mrs. J.M., Marysville, Washington.

9 Fun-Filled Things to Do in San Jose, Costa Rica With Kids

Planning a family vacation can be tricky, especially if you have young kids. There’s much to consider, from where you’ll eat to where you’ll stay . As you plan your vacation, you’ll want to fill your itinerary with kid-friendly activities that both you and your children can enjoy.

Luckily, Costa Rica has much to offer families with kids. From exploring museums to exploring the thrill of ziplining, there’s something for everyone in this Central American Paradise. In this blog, we’ll explore nine things to do in San Jose, Costa Rica with kids to help you plan a memorable itinerary.

1. Visit the Museo de Los Niños

The Museo de Los Niños, or the San Jose Children’s Museum, is a fascinating stop for kids of all ages. It used to be a prison but has since been converted into a bright, vibrant museum packed with fascinating elements and interactive exhibits.

The historic building is hard to miss, given its remarkable stature and bright yellow paint. Inside, you’ll find a host of exhibits and activities that teach children about various subjects, from art, history, and culture to science and technology.

While much of the exhibits and activities are in Spanish, this museum is a fun way to immerse your kids in the rich culture and local language of Costa Rica. From the life-sized recreation of the classic “Operation” game that educates kids on the human body to the interactive earth and space exhibit, there’s no shortage of things to do and sights to see in this museum.

2. Enjoy a Float Down the River

A float down the river is a fun way to immerse you and your kids in the nature and wildlife native to Costa Rica. There are plenty of tours, each with different intensity levels, so there’s something for families with kids of all ages.

If you have younger kids and want to enjoy a soothing, informational paddle down the river, consider a tour that floats down the Class 1 section of the Sarapiqui River. Or, if you have adventurous kids who want an invigorating excursion down the rapids of the Pacuare River, consider a tour that takes you through its assortment of rapids and past the flanking rainforest.

There’s something for everyone, whether you want a calm ride or one that is sure to get your adrenaline flowing.

3. Visit the Butterfly Gardens

The Spirogyra Butterfly Gardens are a must-see, especially if you’re visiting with kids. The gardens are teeming with a diverse variety of butterflies that flit freely about the space. While many of the butterflies are on the smaller side, the diversity and vibrant colors make the gardens well worth a trip.

You can meander through the gardens yourself, observing the butterflies go about their day, or you can embark on a guided tour to immerse yourself in a learning experience. The gardens offer educational programs, too, so pick whatever works best for you and your family!

4. Oxigeno Human Playground

The prospect of visiting a large shopping center with kids can be daunting, especially if your kids are on the younger end, but the Oxigeno Human Playground is worth a stop. Nestled in the Heredia suburb, this sprawling shopping center has much more to offer than shops and good eats.

It boasts an assortment of things to do, including a trampoline center, climbing walls, an indoor pool, a track, a gym, and a seasonal skating rink. The trampoline center and climbing walls are often kid favorites, although the pool and skating rink are also popular for kids of all ages.

Visiting this center is a great way to help your kids burn off extra energy, whether by scaling the climbing walls or zipping around the skating rink when it’s available.

5. Sample All of the Eats

Don’t miss Costa Rica’s delectable cuisine! As you embark on your journey and enjoy all sorts of excursions, remember to stop and sample all that Costa Rica has to offer. The San Jose Mercado Central is a great place to start, as it’s teeming with countless stalls and restaurants offering an assortment of local foods.

We love the local dishes and flavors, each worth a try on your Costa Rican vacation. For example, sample gallo pinto, a mouthwatering combination of rice and black beans seasoned with aromatic spices and seasonings and served over eggs. Or try Tres Leches cake, a must-try dessert made with sponge cake soaked in three types of milk and topped with whipped cream.

There are plenty of restaurants in and around the city with kid-friendly menus. For example, Cafe Rojo has delicious local eats, including mouthwatering casado, and delicious dessert options, from carrot cake to peanut, lime, and chili cookies.

Whether you have a few picky eaters in your bunch or adventurous foodies, there’s something for everyone!

6. Visit the Arenal Volcano National Park

Spend a day in Arenal Volcano National Park (or more—there’s lots to do!). While you can embark on a self-guided tour of the park, there are also many guided tours that offer authentic, memorable experiences.

From horseback rides to hikes and waterfalls to hanging bridges, there’s plenty to do in Arenal Volcano National Park. Although the volcano is currently dormant, it’s still worth a visit!

If you’re visiting with young kids, be sure to look for the easier, kid-friendly trails for hiking. If you’re not up for hiking, horseback riding can be an excellent alternative, even for younger kids.

7. Go Ziplining

Ziplining is a favorite for kids of varying ages, especially the older ones. There are plenty of ziplining tours available in and around San Jose, each with something different to offer. While the heights can be daunting (especially if you’re scared of heights like me), many find that it’s great fun once you’re all strapped in!

As you and your kids zip down the lines, one at a time, soak in the lush jungle below and your bird’s eye view of the canopy. Some ziplines even sail over lakes or waterfalls, giving you a jaw-dropping view of the water below!

8. Cool Off in the Blue Falls

Costa Rica’s afternoons can escort in lofty temperatures, so if you need to cool off, visit the Blue Falls of Costa Rica. In the grand scheme of waterfall options in the area, these falls certainly aren’t the grandest, but they’re less crowded and undoubtedly beautiful.

The Blue Falls is a series of seven waterfalls and pools boasting stunning blue water flanked by lush foliage. The water is chilly, so be prepared for a refreshing experience, but after a morning of touring or activities, a swim in these pools and at the base of these waterfalls is a great way to cool off.

It’s important to note that these falls are just under two hours from San Jose, but if you’re looking for a fun thing to do with your kids on a hot day, it’s well worth the drive.

9. Peruse the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center

If your kiddos love animals and want to learn more about the rescue process, make sure to squeeze in a visit to the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center. The animals housed here are rescued from illegal pet trades, orphaned, or unable to survive on their own in the wild.

The rescue center takes them in to give them a chance at a life they may not have had in their natural habitat, supplying them with the support and care they need to thrive. It’s an educational experience that educates kids about various animals, their habitats, and what kind of care they need to flourish in the sanctuary.

The animals residing in the sanctuary can vary from time to time, but you may see wildlife ranging from monkeys and sloths to macaws and owls. You can book tours for you and your kiddos to stroll through the sanctuary, viewing the animals rehabilitating throughout its grounds.

Is it Safe to Travel to Costa Rica Right Now? Your 2023 Outlook

costa rica

Traveling used to be so much fun till COVID-19 arrived. However, things are slowly getting back to normal. So now is the ideal opportunity to rekindle your wanderlust. Costa Rica is one of the top destinations to visit in Latin America. But, like everyone else, you may be wondering, “is Costa Rica safe?” and what this country has in store for you.

So if you’re considering a trip to this historical Latin American country , it’s best to know what’s new and if it’s a generally safe place to spend your vacation. Is it worth your money? How safe is Costa Rica ? Well, now’s the right time to find out.

Is It Safe in Costa Rica as a Tourist?

As someone who’s not broadly familiar with Latin American countries, is it safe to travel to Costa Rica and if it has a high crime rate?

According to the 2022 Global Peace Index , Costa Rica ranks 38th overall as the region’s most peaceful and safest place. On the other hand, the USA ranks 129th. But as a tourist, you’ll want to exercise some precautions since you want to be extra safe while you enjoy your surroundings.

Some essential travel advisories you can follow are the following:

  • Beware of your surroundings.
  • Don’t display signs of wealth, such as wearing eye-catching jewelry.
  • Don’t resist a robbery attempt.
  • Use the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for U.S. citizens to receive alerts and make it easier to locate you.
  • Create a traveler’s checklist .
  • Read the Country Security Report about Costa Rica.

These are just some preventive matters you must remember before traveling to the country for the best experience. It’s better to have a contingency plan than to have no clue at all if emergencies happen.

Becoming a Tourist in Costa Rica

You’ll want fresh air if you live in a city where all you see is concrete and bustling streets. Fortunately, Costa Rica has tons of fantastic scenery and experiences to offer. Mountain views, tropical jungles, streets filled with laughter, and breathtaking beaches are what you can expect when you visit this wonderful country.

No matter your budget, there are tons of fun activities for you and your loved ones. Costa Rica offers adventurous escapades you will love, even if it’s just for the thrill or if you genuinely want to try something new. Furthermore, it’s every nature lover’s paradise. Being thousands of miles away from a stressful environment will do you good once you plan to visit this wonderful country.

The best part is that there are hordes of retired Americans living in Costa Rica because of how affordable everything is. It’s the ideal paradise for someone who’s been living a hectic life and wants something new for a change.

Common Scams You Might Encounter in Costa Rica

Even though Costa Rica is generally safe for tourists, there are still scams you must watch out for. Knowing beforehand will help you have an unforgettable vacation in this lovely country. But don’t worry; you must be wary of only a few.

Transportation Scams

If you’re traveling alone or with a family without using a touring company, you’ll need to rent a vehicle to make it easier for you to get around. However, once some transportation rentals find out you’re a tourist, they might take advantage of you.

Apart from that, there are slash-tire scams where two persons from a car behind you will signal that you have flat tires. But in reality, they already slashed your tires while at a red light or while you’re driving slowly. It’s their way of getting you to stop so they can rob you. For safety, check your tires once in a while in a parking lot full of people. Remote areas are not recommended.

Cheap-Tour Scams

Again, this applies to people who are traveling solo without the help of a reputable touring company. Cheap tour scams are prevalent. While sightseeing, a well-dressed individual approach you and invites you to their too-good-to-be-true tours. After that, they trick you into giving them 50% of the deposit.

But while waiting for them to pick you up the following day, no one shows up. That’s when you realize that you have been scammed. To avoid this kind of fraudulent transaction, book with a reputable company that will take care of the itinerary for you beforehand. It’s best that you already have an itinerary to follow!

Choosing Caravan for Your Next Tour in Costa Rica

As mentioned above, the cheap tour scam has tricked countless tourists. Therefore, before even leaving your country, it’s much better to find a touring company that provides you with everything you need while you’re touring or vacationing without spending more than what you want to pay.

Caravan is the most trusted and reliable travel company, which offers the best rates. We’re the “Costco of All Touring Companies” and are well-known for our excellent travel and vacation packages. Plus, best value for money inclusions without the add-ons to worry

What Caravan’s tour packages include:

RV Caravans Tours: Are They for You?

Travel with a group with a pre-determined itinerary offers many merits to discover new destinations.

by Dan & Lisa Goy

November 12, 2020

Words by Dan and Lisa Goy Owners/Operators Baja Amigos RV Caravan Tours

The world of travel as we know it has changed and given the independent nature of RV travel, joining a RV caravan may be a better option than booking a cruise or flight to a vacation resort. For most RVers, traveling in a caravan is an unknown experience.

1 Caravan Tours Photo Dick Schaefer .jpg

Dick Schaefer

RV tours are not for everyone but even the most independent travelers have taken one with great experiences.

RV Caravans vs. RV Caravan Tours

Both RV Caravans and RV Caravan Tours consists of a group of campers traveling together, driving their own RV, led by Wagon-Masters and often followed by Tail-Gunners.  It is however, very important to recognize that these are two different mediums with different experiences.  RV Caravans are destination-focused and generally include only one night stops and are often shorter in length.

Everyone is familiar with cruise ship tours, river boat tours, cycling tours, and kayak tours.  RV caravan tours usually offer many of the same experiences and destinations. As with all tours planned, they are a particular length and the fee includes specific features and a minimum or maximum number of participants.  They also have many stops for multiple days and are much longer.

Aside from the shared driving experience, RV tours include organized excursions, group dinners, and sightseeing opportunities with guides. Another difference is an RV caravan usually includes a one page itinerary while an RV Caravan Tour is likely to include a tour book with lengthy, relevant information of the region, country or area that you’re visiting.

Bureau of Land Management Alaska

There are RV tours across Canada, the United States and Mexico for every month of the year.

International RV Caravan tours (Outside North America)

RV caravan tour companies operate across the globe.  There are a few large operators that offer RV tours on every continent.  Typically, you’re responsible for airfare with international RV tours and the RV rental is usually included in the total fee.  A European operator provides an option to ship your RV to a different continent at an extra cost. As with most RV caravan tours, once the tour formally begins (Day 1) all features of the tour (ie: hotels, camping fees, guided tours, etc.) are also included.

RV Caravan Tours – North America

There are RV tours across Canada, the United States and Mexico operating every month of the year.  Some are small companies offering specific tours in select locations while others are large corporations with a diverse catalogue of tours across the continent. Often RV or manufacturer clubs also offer tours to members – sometimes in conjunction with an RV tour operator.  Airstream, Winnebago, Escapees and Passport America are good examples.

Again, cost, features, length, number of participants, tour books, and experience of staff may vary.  Depending on the country and your citizenship, you may need to purchase health and vehicle insurance in addition to the fee. Gas and groceries should also be in your budget. Sometimes operators will provide portable radios so each RVer can communicate with each other while on route.  Otherwise, you may be requested to bring a CB or other type of 2 way radio.

There are even specialized manufacturer Caravan tours, including Airstream seen here.

RV Caravan Tours – Benefits

Simply put, your entire trip is pre-planned by someone else with knowledge and experience.  If you like a planned vacation to include the must see sites, an RV tour could save you hundreds of hours of research – just select a tour and operator, make your reservations, pay your deposit/final payment and show up at the designated rendezvous location.  Knowing that you’ll have a camping spot wherever it is your headed is definitely comforting.

Traveling with a group of RVers also means camaraderie is guaranteed as you share the adventure with others.  It’s amazing what you learn about RVing from others around a campfire or happy hour. In theory, your stress and anxiety levels arriving in new and unknown are often at a minimum since you are just following the leader who is very familiar with each destination.

Irrespective of the tour – be it Baja, Mexico or Alaska United States – traveling as a group ensures added security in the event of a breakdown or accident.  Ask yourself, “what is the value of peace of mind when in an unfamiliar country or territory?”

You can also count on easy access to ATMs, gas/diesel, propane, grocery stops with driving days that are not too long with plenty of breaks from the road. You can also be rest assured that the organized restaurant meals will have no surprises.  Excursions and tours will be worthwhile, the sites will be impressive while activities will be well-organized and include cultural and historical insight.

Do not discount the value of “building capacity,” which could be a specific geography, area history, culture, and distinct RV practices and procedures.  Plus, the vast majority of folks who sign up for an RV tour make new friends for life, and their expectations are exceeded. We have groups that still meet every winter at the same RV park in the U.S. or Mexico and also have visited each other’s homes.

RV Caravan Tours – Downside

Some folks love RV tours, others not so much.  Remember, you will be on a schedule with a specific itinerary with little flexibility.  Our Baja RV tours include a number of beach stops and often include dry camping.  Generally, when the weather is good, the experience is spectacular.  Although weather can be forecasted, unfortunately no one can schedule it, which means there are no guarantees when you arrive at a destination.

We say our groups are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you will get.  Sometimes the tour will includes RVers that you may personally never choose to travel with and run away from.

Also, all RVers have different driving habits, which some may find irritating.  Depending on the size of your group, you may spend a significant amount of time not driving, but waiting in your RV waiting for someone else to move, particularly when you arrive at an RV park or a fuel stop. You may also have to tolerate another RVer’s camping habits such as running loud generators and being noisier than you may be used to.

We always promise “fun and adventure” with our Baja tours, but also reinforce and clarify with guests that these are two different words. Whatever RV tour you sign up for, your expectations need to be realistic.  We sometimes find RVers who normally spend their winters in Yuma at an RV resort will be unprepared for RVing in Baja or Alaska.

The fact is, RV tours are not for everyone but even the most independent travelers have considered taking an RV Caravan tour with great experiences.

At this time the borders are closed to non-essential travel and cross border RV tours are suspended with among all operators. Check with individual operators regarding their COVID 19 protocols for tours. Many already have them in place.

Bad Customer Service. Headache Tour Company

The company was really rude, and their customer service was terrible. Talking to them was stressful, and they sounded condescending. Even though they only show 5-star reviews on their website, it seems fake or carefully chosen. While their prices might be a bit lower, they add extra fees like fuel surcharge. It's better to save your time and money by booking somewhere else for a better experience.

Fraud/Scam canyontours.com

Don't buy tours at canyontours.com. This is a fraudulent company. They never showed up to pick us up and said we were not in the right location, which was absolutely not true. They deceive people in the modality of non-providing the service ordered online. They also treated us very badly by phone and just ignored us, and did not want to provide a refund. Of course, this is the way they operate to scam people.

TERRIBLE experience!!!

Terrible, terrible, terrible experience with this company! I booked the GC 4 in 1 Voyager tour of the West Rim online several weeks before my family’s trip. 1 day before our scheduled tour, they called me and cancelled. I decided to give them a 2nd chance and rebooked for the next available date (which was our last day in Vegas) instead of going with another company. BIG MISTAKE!!! The day before our rescheduled tour I called and reconfirmed our reservations. The morning of our tour we were waiting outside our hotel waiting to be picked up as instructed but the driver didn’t show up. Thinking they were just running late, I called to make sure and was told our tour was CANCELLED AGAIN!!! I did not receive a call or text informing me of this. I had to call to even find out! Because of that, by the time we found out, it was too late to rebook with another tour company (and it was the last day of our trip).I would NEVER recommend this tour company. They are completely unreliable, unprofessional, and do not care about providing even basic customer service. I would give them ZERO stars if I could!

Our tour guide was amazing but there…

Our tour guide was amazing but there was just way to many rest stop breaks and to much time spent on the bus. The Grand Canyon was amazing but not enough time was spend there a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes the rest of the time was spent on the bus. Definitely not worth the price or the time. I could have done other things the day felt like a waste to us.

In one word bad in two words very bad. If you want to see the Grand Canyon, you will not see it with this company!! They didn’t pick us from the pick up point!! First at reservation they told us they will pick us from the hotel this was my reason to choose them, then they gave another pick up, we came at 06:15 but nobody came!! There were a lot of buses but not them, when I call them at 06:50 they told us that the driver left!! All the guides from other companies ask and search for the people, but they nothing!! Didn’t call or text us just make accuses.Unprofessional!! And after all of this they didn’t want to return our money!!!!

We booked this canyon bus tour from Las…

We booked this canyon bus tour from Las vegas to South rim a month ago and paid $85 per person. On day before travel date we got a call and they said due to technical problem we can't run south rim instead you can take west rim with extra $25 per head. As we already planned this date for canyon tour so we said ok. On next day when we waiting for board west rim bus infront of our hotel we identified they were operating South rim bus , not sure why they lied to us. And then we waiting for west rim bus and it came late and this is not bus that we expected .This is not a bus..not convenient seats..kind of small size van.. This tour started around 8.45AM and they dropped us on white tent around 11.30AM. They gave only 3 hours time to finish eagle and Guano point. Buses are operating from white tent to eagle and Guano point for every 10 mins..but so much crowd in the line and took around 1 hour to board eagle point. They gave ticket with free meal either eagle or Quano point but it was long queue in eagle point and we decided to go quano point and got the food but we don't have enough time to eat as well. We rush to catch the bus from quano point to white tent..reached around 2.30 PM.. This is really not bus tour...this is RUSH tour... The place is worth but not worth with this bus tour.. better plan with rental car and visit these places..relax and enjoy..

Grand Canyon Sunset Tour with Limo pickup

We were on the sunset tour with limo pickup/drop off and Canyon floor landing. Firstly, the Limo which had an arranged/scheduled collection point and time was around 45mins late - which is frustrating given we were told to be at the collection point 10mins before the scheduled pick up time, resulting in us wasting almost an hour of our day waiting for collection. I have to say credit to Alex our Pilot - he was fantastic from start to finish. There are two issues I have with the overall experience; there was no air conditioning in the limo and more importantly there was no air conditioning in the helicopter. Whilst the Company cannot dictate what the outside temperature is, they operate in the desert and should be well equipped to deliver this type of service/comfort. The lack of air conditioning meant the tour was a challenge and did spoil the overall experience due to the inability to deal with the outside temperatures. There was no escaping the heat for the entire journey, so much so it made me feel a little unwell. Whilst I understand Company can only run the available aircraft I am disappointed that we were not prior warned about the poor air conditioning. We only arrived in Vegas the night before so had not acclimatised and given the extreme heat, neither vehicle was suitable to keep us comfortable. Learning that the other two aircraft had appropriate air conditioning only added to our discomfort, I thought back to my original booking and I am convinced the package we chose was to fly on the 'upgraded EC-130'! We paid a good $1000 for this and we expected a service which would match this spend. The excellent image and experience the pilot gave us has saved the Company from a total disaster but I still consider this well below acceptable. After the trip I sent two emails to two of the Company's email addresses, neither emails were responded to - extremely poor after service. We would not go with this Company again, having done this before with Maverick I would recommend you go with them.

A Moving Sweat Box

When I went to the grand canyon for my fiancee's birthday, we were both very excited because this is something she's wanted to do for a long time. We got the package that includes the skywalk and lunch for $154 with Canyon Tours. The day was going to be 100° day in Las Vegas, and my pick-up location was at the MGM Grand. As we headed to the grand canyon, the weather was a steamy 90° heading towards an 80° day at the grand canyon. The Bus ride was an extremely uncomfortable one. It was a 30-passenger bus, and the headrest on the seats were angeled in a way that you'd have to be intentional to lean your head all the way back just rest your head. Still, it's so uncomfortable it ended up causing more harm than help to trying to get comfortable for the two-and-a-half-hour ride. If not being able to get comfortable wasn't enough, the AC wasn't working correctly. Heading to the grand canyon wasn't as bad as the way back because it wasn't as hot since it was only 90° transitioning to 80°. My back and chest were only slightly perspiring, and I'm usually a little warmer than most people, so I didn't complain, thinking it was just me. Once we got to the grand canyon, it was really fun. Seeing this landmark was everything we hoped for. I don't feel paying for the food was necessary because what Canyon Tours charges you to add the lunch is the same price they'd charge you at the location. If you plan on doing the skywalk, be prepared to spend $65 on the pictures. It's not mandatory, but you might as well pay it since you can't bring cameras, phones, or any personal items on the skywalk. If you just saw one picture you liked, it's $25 per picture... This is why it's best to pay the $65 and chalk it up to support our Native American brethren. They will give you three options to eat, and when we went, only two were available. The driver told us it was authentic Native American food and that Guano Point was the best option out of all 3. When we arrived at Guano point, the options were: Grilled chicken. Pulled Pork BBQ. A regular hamburger with Mashed potatoes and gravy. Corn on the cob. A roll. We were a bit disappointed, considering we got excited about trying a different culture's food, but it wasn't bad, so there is not much to complain about here. Once we checked out all three locations the west rim had to offer, we had time to spare, so we just rode around on the shuttle bus because it was hot and there was not much to do with an hour to spare during the 4-hour tour of the grand canyon. Grand Canyon tours boast that they have a 4-hour tour vs. other companies three hour tour, and my honest opinion is that 4 hours is hugely unnecessary. Now it's time to go, and we are going to stop by the Hoover Dam. As we head that way, several of us are starting to get cranky because the AC isn't working, and it is more than noticeable. We notify the driver, and she makes excuses as if we are not supposed to complain and just deal with it. She told us the bus is used every day and it just happens sometimes. My rebuttal was that I paid to be comfortable too, and from my ride to the grand canyon, and if I expected to be comfortable, I could have rented a car in Las Vegas to make the trip a lot cheaper than what I spent. Since I wasn't happy with the defensive exchange with the driver, who just ignored me and started talking to someone else, I immediately sent a message to canyon tours, who didn't respond to me even after a week had passed. This lets me know they really don't care about the customers, which prompted me to write this very detailed review of this company that I would advise you all to avoid.

How to Spot and Avoid Common Caravan Scams

Don’t get caught up in a scam when trying to purchase a caravan or book one for your next holiday. Here are the most common caravan scams to look out for.

caravan scams

Are you in the market to buy a caravan? Or are you looking to hire a caravan for your next cross-country holiday ? There are plenty of caravan sellers and letting agents with legitimate offers… But unfortunately, there are many scammers and criminals who are looking to take advantage of honest people too.

The best way to avoid becoming a victim of caravan scams is to be aware of the tactics that are most commonly used to con innocent people out of their money. The golden rule to remember is: if a deal seems too good to be true, there’s a good chance it is.

Here are the most common scams to keep an eye out for when buying or hiring a caravan.

AVOIDING CARAVAN SCAMS WHEN BUYING

Online shopping is extremely popular, and many people have taken to buying caravans and RVs online. However, making major purchases like this on digital platforms can be quite risky, especially since it’s much easier for scammers to draw unwitting people in when they’re operating over the internet rather than face to face.

caravan scams

This means that you need to be careful and vigilant when looking to buy a caravan online, and that you need to do your homework and check the validity of each sale.

These are some of the most commonplace tactics that online scammers use to lure you in with caravan deals that seem too good to be true.

  • Advertising top-tier caravans at giveaway prices. You might feel the temptation to jump at a deal that offers a high-spec, expensive caravan at a bargain price. When you call the seller to inquire about the caravan, they might tell you it is in excellent condition and has attracted plenty of interest from other potential buyers.

They may also ask for a deposit to secure the caravan without offering you the chance to see it. In many of these cases, the promised caravan doesn’t exist at all.

  • Involving unspecified third parties. Some scammers may claim to be out of town and unable to meet with you, but promise to use the advertising site’s middleman service instead. You might receive a believable call or message from the website and pay for a caravan that you will never receive. Be warned. No reputable sites actually offer middleman services like these!
  • Requesting upfront payments. Other criminals may request Moneygram and Western Union transfers or upfront payments, saying that they are tired of people wasting their time. Once you make the transfer, the ad listing may quickly disappear. It’s a good rule of thumb to avoid paying money for a caravan that you haven’t seen in person.
  • Sending phishing links. Another popular scam format involves being sent caravan listing links via email. If you receive such a link, rather access the website by manually typing its URL into your browser search bar. The email link could well be a phishing attempt . If you’ve made a payment for a caravan or RV online, we recommend watching your bank account for unrecognisable transactions. If you notice any suspicious deductions, contact your bank immediately.

AVOIDING HOLIDAY CARAVAN SCAMS

Are you planning a fun-filled getaway soon? Organising a trip-ready holiday caravan can be fraught with hazards, too. One of the most common caravan scams involves an individual advertising a caravan on Gumtree, Craigslist, Facebook, or another free advertising website. The holiday caravan looks like the perfect accommodation for your break, so you message to enquire about rental prices and availability. The owner might then direct message you or ask for your email address so that they can respond.

caravan scams

Once you have established that the caravan will be available on your chosen dates, you will probably be asked for a deposit to secure it, and a possible down payment on insurance fees. Many scammers request payments through PayPal and may ask you to send the money through the Gift or Friends and Family facilities to save on transaction fees. This is a big red flag!

If you gift money to a friend or family member on PayPal, you won’t pay any commission. However, if you discover that you have been scammed, you will have lost PayPal’s protection and your deposit as you didn’t list your payment as a purchase. Your caravan might not exist at all, and if it does, it might be nowhere near as pleasant as the one advertised to you.

You may also travel to your holiday park to be informed by the ‘owner’ that your caravan has been double-booked – or to find out that there wasn’t a caravan there to begin with.

The best ways to avoid being victimised by a holiday caravan scam are:

  • Be sure to book your holidays through trusted caravan rental portals or authorised holiday park letting agents;
  • Ask advertisers for proof of ownership and the exact location of the holiday park in which the caravan is stored before paying any deposits or fees. Request that the owner allows you to call the park where the caravan is based. Then, call them to verify that the caravan exists and is owned by the individual that you have been dealing with;
  • Pay your deposit via secure bank transfer. If you have no option but to pay using PayPal, make the payment as a purchase and pay over the commission fees. The protection you’ll receive is well worth the extra money spent; and
  • If you’re going to tow a caravan and need to update your car’s insurance cover , organise this yourself. Don’t let a third party act on your behalf unless they’re a trusted entity that you’re renting or buying from. Swindlers will find any opportunity to squeeze extra cash out of you.

DON’T BE A VICTIM

Caravan scams can come in a variety of different forms. Scammers may target you when attempting to sell you a caravan online, or they might try to swindle you out of deposits, added insurance and holiday rental fees when you try to book a caravan for your next holiday trip.

caravan scams

It’s a good idea to be cautious whenever you deal with the supposed owner or seller of a caravan. This is especially true for a deal that simply seems too good to be true, like a luxurious caravan being rented out at minimal prices during peak season, or a top of the line caravan that’s being sold for significantly less than what it’s worth.

Ask plenty of questions and verify the information you receive before you hand over any of your hard-earned cash. A reputable seller or letting agent will have no problem proving to you that their offer is legitimate.

Misleading caravan giveaway shared thousands of times on Facebook

What was claimed.

Social media users could win a caravan in return for comments and shares on a Facebook post.

Our verdict

There is no evidence this is a real giveaway, and the company that shared the photos have confirmed they are not affiliated with the post in any way.

A post on Facebook , shared over 5,000 times in under 24 hours, claims that social media users who share and comment on it could be in with a chance of winning a free caravan.

Alongside a number of pictures of the caravan, the post says: “Due to having a few small dents and scratches we have been unable to sell this in our showroom, rather than flog it as second hand we have decided to bring some joy by giving it to someone who has Sharred then commented by May 31st at 5pm. Delivery should be within 2 weeks [sic].”

But this is not a real giveaway. Full Fact found that the pictures were taken from a website run by a caravan dealership in Cumbria called Adventure Leisure Rentals , and a spokesperson for the company told us they had no association with the giveaway run by a Facebook page called Happy Campers .

Rick Parker, digital marketing manager at Adventure Leisure Rentals, told us that he had personally taken the pictures at a product reveal and had previously reported similarly fake giveaways using his images to Facebook.

There are several other indications that the giveaway might not be genuine. Firstly, the text is near-identical to other posts we have checked in the past , indicating that the authors of the posts may simply be copying and pasting previous content.

Secondly, while the post claims that social media users simply have to share and comment, a number of comments have been replied to by the Happy Campers Facebook page directing them to a “winners” page .

This page then encourages people to like and comment on a second post, directs them to “register” on a third party site and then asks them to post proof of their registration in the comments.

In response to some of these comments ,  the Happy Campers page then says: “Our team is having trouble sending prizes to you maybe you haven't taken the survey on the link, make sure you register correctly [sic].” This is a common indication that the giveaway isn’t real, and we have written about posts making similar requests from social media users a number of times in the past .

Thirdly, there are a number of spelling and grammatical errors in the posts themselves, which can be an indication that they have not been shared by a legitimate source such as an official brand account.

Posts like these advertising fake giveaways, often in the form of free meals at popular chain restaurants such as Harvester or Greggs or cheap deals for items such as air fryers or electric scooters at retailers such as Argos, are extremely common and we have fact checked them many times before.

Misleading images are some of the most common kinds of misinformation we see online, but they can sometimes be hard to spot. It’s always worth checking if a picture shows what the post says it does before you share it—we have written a guide on how to do so here .

This article is part of our work fact checking potentially false pictures, videos and stories on Facebook. You can read more about this—and find out how to report Facebook content— here . For the purposes of that scheme, we’ve rated this claim as false because the company which owns the pictures is not affiliated with any such giveaway.
