Mastodon is an American metal band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. in the year 2000. Their music is categorized as sludge metal or progressive metal.
The band is comprised of drummer Brann Dailor, guitarist Bill Kelliher, bassist Troy Sanders and Guitarist Hinds. The foursome met at a High on Fire concert and formed Mastodon after getting along right away. After recording a demo in 2000, Mastodon was signed to Relapse Records in 2001. They released their debut album “Remission” in 2002 and the sophomore album “Leviathan” followed in 2004.
Mastodon’s “Leviathan” is a concept album, whose theme revolves around the novel “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville. The album received honorable mentions in UK music magazines “Kerrang!” and “Terrorizer.” Mastodon’s work also gained popularity in the video gaming industry. Songs off of “Remission” appeared in video game “Tony Hawk’s Underground,” the single “Iron Tusk” from “Leviathan” was featured in “Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland,” and the single “Blood and Thunder” appeared in “Guitar Hero: Metallica” and “Need for Speed: Most Wanted.”
In 2006 Mastodon ended their contract with Relapse Records and signed with Warner Bros. Music. The third album “Blood Mountain” boosted Mastodon to commercial success. The album reached No.9 on music magazine Rolling Stone’s best albums of 2006 and they performed the single “Colony of Birchmen” with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age at the MTV Music Video Awards in 2007. Mastodon was also nominated for their performance of the same single at the 2007 Grammy awards. “Colony of Birchmen” also debuted on video game “Rock Band 2” and “Blood Mountain” single “Sleeping Giant” was made popular on video game “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.”
The album “Crack the Skye” was released in March 2009 and focuses on the themes of wormholes, Stephen Hawking’s theories, and out-of-body experiences. Scott Kelly from the band Neurosis guest features on the singles “Crack the Skye,” “Aqua Dementia,” and “Crystal Skull.” Drummer Dailor provides the vocals for the single “Oblivion.” The album was promoted on American show “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and on the European leg of the Metallica tour “World Magnetic Tour” in 2009. Artist Paul Romano provides the artwork for the album covers and backdrops for Mastodon. Mastodon cites metal bands like Neurosis and Melvins and 1970’s artist Thin Lizzy as their musical inspiration.
Live reviews
It baffles me how Mastodon are not playing big arenas...not that I'm complaining...to see them rocking it up close and personal was just epic.
The setlist was made up mainly of newer material - the tour, after all, being a promo for the latest album, Once more round the sun, but finished with an amazing crescendo that was the classic duo of crystal skull and blood and thunder.
Other than an early technical glitch in which Brent's mic was barely audible, Mastodon completely rocked the stage, usually letting the music do the talking, from Brann's ferocious and highly complex drumming to the amazing rapid fire guitar harmonies between Bill and Brent and who can forget Troy's iconic voice and intricate bass lines, which I personally enjoyed being able to see up close.
The few times the band did talk were genuinely heartfelt or witty. "It smells good in here" proclaimed Brent as an obvious stench of weed hung over the crowd. There was none of the obligatory shouts of 'make some noise" and believe me they didn't need to, the crowd bellowed its approval at every opportunity.
The only problem was that every time the crowd tried to enjoy itself, the fascists at the academy put a dampner on it immediately, shining their torches in people's faces like Patrick Stewart in Conspiracy theory. However, the crowd enjoyed every moment judging by the chorus of agreement when they announced that the band would be returning to the UK in the summer. Personally, I'm praying for Sonisphere again. After seeing Mastodon this close, only Knebworth will do!

US heavy metal titans Mastodon have managed a rare thing in this transitional era of modern metal: gaining mainstream, international exposure while remaining progressive and, most importantly, heavy. The first time I saw them was when they were touring their sludgy, riff-driven classic, Leviathan, in a little club in Devon. They felt and sounded like classic heavy metal, with the groove aspects of Pantera combined with experimental drum patterns and Rush-like guitar intricacies. ‘Blood And Thunder’ was and is one of the best live metal songs of the last two decades. Mastodon have since mellowed out, in a way, replacing the scream-heavy sludge metal with a more melodic prog-metal style. But what they’ve lost in sheer heaviness they’ve made up for with innovation. Albums Blood Mountain and the incredible Crack The Skye took them to new heights, especially the latter, which they played in full when they first toured it over here in the UK. However, their most recent two albums – The Hunter and Once More 'Round the Sun – have cemented their status as one of the world’s biggest, loudest and best heavy metal bands of this era.
The twin vocals of guitarist Brent Hinds and bassist Tory Sanders – two singers who have very different but complementary vocal styles – are certainly the focal point, but they wouldn’t be anywhere without the unique, relentlessly inventive drums of Brann Dailor. Incredible.
Hair? Check. Beards? Check. Tattoos? Check. Riffs? Double and triple check. Atlanta, Georgia’s sludge metal kings Mastodon are here to rock your world. While 2002’s Remission was the debut album for Troy Sanders, Brent Hines and co, it wasn’t until the epic 2004 record Leviathan that we got some idea of the scope and ambition of Mastodon. This is a band not afraid of a concept album, nor do they worry about song lengths or structures. They’ve even gone as far as releasing Crack the Skye with two versions: one with vocals, and one without. While talk of space travel, astral planes and out-of-body experiences has whiffs of Spinal Tap about it, this all vanishes once the band takes to the live arena. Mastodon bring prog-metal intensity to their live shows, battering the crowd with wave upon wave of riffs and noise, yet this is a band who know the power of a melody and just like forbearers Led Zeppelin they can pull off multiple harmonies without you immediately thinking of Hobbits and Middle Earth. They’ll vary a set most nights, but it would be surprising if they didn’t end a show with the brutal sludge one-two of ‘Aqua Dementia’ and ‘The Sparrow’, both of which are long-time fan favourites and bound to make your night go out with one almighty and enormous bang.
AMAZING, the best show I've ever seen! I'm not that big a fan of EODM but they were a lot of fun for sure. Mastodon was an experience! Everybody was so good because they are obviously some of the BEST at what they do! But oh my God, RUSSIAN CIRCLES! These guys were nothing short of PERFECT. They STOLE THE SHOW for me. I could barely stand because the bass was so MONSTROUS. But this drummer knew EXACTLY what he was doing and played PERFECTLY with the rest of the band. These guys are something to see live! They are HEAVIER than the HEAVIEST MATTER IN THE UNIVERSE.
Solid line-up with a good mixture of classic and new songs from the ‘Emperor of Sand’.
Right from the start, a well packed Melkweg crowd gets dragged into the dark depths with songs from ‘Crack the Sky’.
CD quality riffs, guitar solos and tight beats carry our spirits from start to end.
Well orchestrated dancing lights and grasping images flash and flow to have our eyes gaze with amazement as sound waves engulf us to all familiar black thunder and melodic moments of liberation.
Truly a night to remember for a very long time, so thank you Mastodon.
Absolutely beautiful and insane. They played nearly a 2.5hr setlist which featered songs from EVERY ALBUM. There was an amazing mosh pit. Picks and drum stick thrown everywhere. They have really put forth their effort to span their setlist across a lot of their classics. From divinations to mother puncher to march of the fire ants and so on. Plus with Eagles of Death Metal being such a great opener. If there is any tour to go see them, it's this one!
Fifth time of seeing mastodon live, these guys never fail to deliver the goods. On a freezing cold night in Manchester mastadon brought their latest stage show to the masses. A 90 minute set of all the classics plus a chunk of songs from the latest album emperor of Sands. Great show, great set, great band. An excellent night of live music was had by 2000 metalheads who decended on Manchester academy last night.
How can Mastodon fail,
They are the superheroes of music if you ask me.
The venue was hot, I had to dump my water and purchase a $4 bottle.
Although we did get a complementary towel and plastic fan..
The band performed flawlessly as hoped.
They need to come to Redding California
Also Primus was good but.....
Mastodon definitely should have been headlining that show.
Very entertaining gig and great audience response. It was my first time at Brixton Academy and quite liked it. Acoustics were decent, but you can't expect studio-like quality with this kind of music. Mutoid Man were convincing, Kvelertak were exciting and Mastodon were on fire. Scott Kelly taking part to the end of the show added an epic flavour to the whole experience.
I saw Mastodon in 2009 with five finger death punch. What made this show more special was that it was the last day of my freshman year of high school. I am a huge fan of Mastodon, they have an incredible style that just mixes classic metal styles, southern blues licks and hardcore punk driving choruses. They have an incredible sound and I can't wait to see them again!

Ghost Book 2022 North American Tour With Mastodon + Spiritbox
Ghost are set to bring their eye-catching live show to stages across the U.S. and Canada for a late summer / early fall trek, and they've got a pretty impressive bill of support for the run scheduled as well.
The mighty Mastodon and emerging rockers Spiritbox have signed on to support Ghost on the upcoming dates, while veteran metallers Carcass will also hop on board for the tour closing show on Sept. 23 in Green Bay, Wis.
The trek officially gets underway Aug. 26 in San Diego, Calif., primarily hitting arenas along the way. Ghost will break from the run on Sept. 8 to perform as part of the massive Blue Ridge Rock Fest lineup for 2022 before resuming the run through the Sept. 23 finale.
The newly announced leg of the "Imperatour" comes as the band is supporting their most recent album, Impera . The album, released in March, features the songs "Hunter's Moon," "Call Me Little Sunshine" and "Twenties." It peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart.
Get a closer look at all the cities, dates and venues below and check Ghost's website for ticketing and VIP options. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10AM local time this Friday (May 20). There is also an American Express® Card Member pre-sale happening as of Wednesday (May 18) at 12N local time.

GRAMMY® Award-nominated metal titans Lamb of God and GRAMMY® Award-winning band Mastodon announce the co-headlining Ashes Of Leviathan Tour . The tour finds the two iconic bands join forces to celebrate the 20th anniversary of two seminal releases: Lamb of God ’s biggest-selling album Ashes of the Wake and Mastodon ’s acclaimed sophomore album Leviathan , which were both released on August 31, 2004. Both bands will perform their respective albums in full. Special guests Kerry King and Malevolence will support throughout the tour, with Unearth on select dates.
Lamb of God’s most recent studio offering, 2022’s Omens, notably marked the band’s sixth consecutive Top 15 debut on the Billboard 200 in addition to capturing #1 on the Top Hard Rock Albums Chart, #3 on the Top Album Sales Chart, #3 on the Top Rock Albums Chart, and #5 on the Top Vinyl Albums Chart. Not to mention, it has amassed an unprecedented 60 million streams and counting.
Mastodon's latest studio album, Hushed and Grim, a double LP recorded at the band's Atlanta studio, West End Sound, was produced by David Bottrill (Tool, Rush, Muse, Peter Gabriel). Hushed and Grim also earned them a GRAMMY® Award nomination for the track "Pushing The Tides." Additionally, the album's single "Teardrinker" secured a top 10 position on the Rock radio charts, a further testament to the band's widespread acclaim.

Live Nation $25 concert ticket sale starts next week: List of Detroit and Michigan shows
Music fans in metro Detroit and Michigan can get their hands on $25 concert tickets for summer shows when Live Nation’s latest Concert Week promotion gets underway next Wednesday.
The limited discounted tickets will be available for more than 170 upcoming shows at venues across the state — from Comerica Park to Pine Knob to the Shelter — as part of the annual promotion by the country’s biggest concert promoter.
The public sale will run from 10 a.m. May 8 through midnight May 14. Early access to the $25 tickets will kick in at 10 a.m. Tuesday for T-Mobile customers ( www.T-MobileReservedTickets.com ) and Rakuten members ( https://www.rakuten.com/livenationpromo ).
The qualifying Detroit and Michigan concerts include shows at Little Caesars Arena (Pink, Missy Elliott, Jennifer Lopez, Creed and others), along with Green Day’s Sept. 4 visit to Comerica Park.
More than four dozen dates at Pine Knob and Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre are on the $25 list, as well as a host of tour stops in Grand Rapids.
Those Michigan shows are among 5,000-plus North American concerts offering discounted tickets as part of Live Nation’s Concert Week, a promotional event that is marking its 10 th year.
