CAIRO (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off a two-day visit to Egypt on Saturday, a trip that underscores the growing ties between the two countries.

Modi’s flight landed at Cairo’s international airport Saturday afternoon, coming from a four-day trip to the United States where he held talks with President Joe Biden , delivered a speech to the U.S. Congress, and met with top American and Indian executives.

It’s the first state visit to Egypt by an Indian prime minister since 1997.

Modi was received by Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, and the two inspected an honor guard and listened to the national anthems. Modi took to Twitter to thank Madbouly for “the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport,” and added, “May India-Egypt ties flourish and benefit the people of our nations.”

Modi and Madbouly then held talks on strengthening Egyptian-Indo ties, according to Egypt’s state-run MENA news agency. The talks were attended by senior government officials from both countries, MENA reported.

Modi also discussed “countering extremism and radicalization” with Grand Mufti Shawki Allam, Egypt’s Islamic jurist, said Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for India’s External Affairs Ministry.

Modi is scheduled to hold talks with President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi on Sunday. The two countries would also sign a set of memorandums aimed at solidifying their ties.

Also on Sunday, Modi will visit a historic mosque, Al-Hakim, in Islamic Cairo, which was recently renovated with the help of the India-based Dawoodi Bohra community. He is also scheduled to visit the Heliopolis War Cemetery to pay tribute to Indian soldiers who fought in World War I.

Modi’s visit comes six months after el-Sissi attended India’s Republic Day parade as an official guest .

In January, el-Sissi and Modi agreed on measures to increase the two-way trade in five years to $12 billion , up from $7.3 billion in 2021-22. During el-Sissi’s visit, the countries also signed agreements on expanding cooperation in cyber security, information technology, culture, and broadcasting.

India is one of the top five importers of Egyptian products, including crude oil and liquefied natural gas, salt, cotton, inorganic chemicals and oilseeds. Major Indian exports to Egypt include cotton yarn, coffee, herbs, tobacco, lentils, vehicle parts, ships, boats and electrical machinery.

More than 50 Indian companies have invested around $3.15 billion in various parts of the Egyptian economy, including chemicals, energy, textiles, garments, agri-business and retailing, according to India’s External Affairs Ministry.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo on a rare visit during which both sides pledged to deepen their strategic partnership.

The two leaders agreed to boost investment by India – the world’s most-populous nation – in Egypt, which has the Arab world’s largest population and is now in the grips of an economic downturn.

Both sides said the bilateral talks covered areas including trade and investment, renewable energy, information technology and pharmaceuticals.

The two also discussed “further cooperation in G-20, highlighting the issues of food and energy insecurity, climate change and the need for Global South to have a concerted voice”, a statement from Modi’s office said, adding that the talks additionally addressed defence and security ties.

Abdel Fattah el-Sisi grants the Order of the Nile medal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

El-Sisi welcomed Modi at the presidential palace in Cairo and bestowed upon him the country’s highest honour, the Order of the Nile, as the two leaders affirmed their “mutual commitment” to strengthen relations.

This would include “increasing high-level visits”, facilitating direct flights between the capitals, and “developing Indian investments in Egypt”, according to the presidency in Cairo.

Last January, the two leaders agreed to increase Indian investments in Egypt, which currently stand at more than $3.15bn, including through a potential “dedicated land area for Indian industries in the Suez Canal Economic Zone”.

Those projects include a $12bn green hydrogen plant to be built by Indian firm ACME.

India is already Egypt’s seventh-largest trading partner, according to data from Cairo’s central bank, with trade reaching $7bn last year.

‘Historic visit’

Modi, who arrived in Cairo on Saturday, is the first Indian prime minister to pay a state visit to Egypt in more than two decades. His two-day stop came six months after el-Sisi was in New Delhi as an official guest during India’s Independence Day.

Modi also invited the Egyptian leader to attend a summit of the Group of 20 leading rich and developing countries, which India will host in September.

Earlier this year, both countries agreed to boost trade cooperation. India is one of the top five importers of Egyptian products, including crude oil and liquefied natural gas, salt, cotton, inorganic chemicals and oilseeds. Notable Indian exports to Egypt include cotton yarn, coffee, herbs, tobacco, lentils, vehicle parts, ships, boats and electrical machinery.

The two governments signed agreements in the fields of agriculture, archaeology, antiquities and competition law, said Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

“My visit to Egypt was a historic one. It will add renewed vigor to India-Egypt relations and will benefit the people of our nations,” Modi wrote on Twitter before departing for New Delhi.

Egypt 's President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed a joint declaration upgrading relations between the two regional powerhouses to the level of “strategic partnership” on Sunday.

An Egyptian presidential statement said the signing ceremony followed talks between the two leaders in Ittihadiya, the suburban Cairo palace that is the seat of the Egyptian presidency.

The declaration of a strategic partnership is largely symbolic, with periodical consultations its main feature. However, it represents a clear indication that Cairo and New Delhi intend to pursue the potential for co-operation on a multitude of levels.

Mr El Sisi, underscoring his government's growing appreciation of relations with New Delhi, presented the Indian leader with the Grand Order of the Nile, the highest honour an Egyptian president can bestow.

During their talks, the two leaders reviewed a wide range of fields in which Egypt and India will co-operate to push bilateral relations forward. These include telecoms, information technology, pharmaceuticals, new and renewable energy and tourism and culture, according to the Egyptian presidential statement.

They also discussed bolstering trade and increasing Indian investment in Egypt, it added.

Mr Modi arrived in Egypt on Saturday when he was received at the airport by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. The pair later held talks attended by senior government officials from both countries.

The arrival marked Mr Modi's first visit to Egypt and the first by an Indian prime minister since 1997. Mr El Sisi has visited India three times, the last visit being in January. Both leaders took office in 2014.

Later on Saturday, Mr Modi discussed “countering extremism and radicalisation” with Grand Mufti Shawki Allam, Egypt's top Islamic theologian, according to Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for India's External Affairs Ministry.

Mr Modi flew to Egypt from the United States where he held talks with President Joe Biden , delivered a speech to the US Congress and met with top American and Indian executives.

Mr Modi visited the historic mosque Al-Hakim in Cairo's medieval quarter on Sunday. The mosque was recently renovated with the help of the India-based Dawoodi Bohra community. He was also scheduled to visit the Heliopolis War Cemetery to pay tribute to Indian soldiers who fought in the British Indian Army in First World War.

The Indian leader’s milestone visit to Washington and his much-heralded trip to Egypt underline his country's emergence as an economic and military power. Surpassing China as the world's most populous country has also bolstered New Delhi’s international credentials.

In contrast, Egypt, the most populous Arab nation with 105 million people, is facing a severe economic downturn that has forced authorities to devalue the country's currency three times since early last year. Inflation is near an all-time high and a dollar crunch has hurt local industries that depend on imported inputs.

But Egypt has undertaken an ambitious, multibillion-dollar overhaul of its infrastructure, building two dozen new cities, including a new capital in the desert east of Cairo. It has also significantly expanded its network of roads, and is building a nuclear power station and monorail and fast railway links worth billions of dollars.

Egypt also plays a key role in the defence of strategic shipping lanes in the Red Sea and is among the world’s top weapons buyers. Its Suez Canal, which links the Red and Mediterranean seas, and Egypt's traditional role as a mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict add considerable weight to its regional and international standing.

When they last met in India in January, Mr El Sisi and Mr Modi agreed on a number of measures to increase the two-way trade in five years to $12 billion , up from $7.3 billion in 2021-22. They also signed deals on expanding co-operation in cyber security, information technology, culture and broadcasting.

India is one of the top five importers of Egyptian products, including crude oil and liquefied natural gas, salt and cotton. Major Indian exports to Egypt include cotton yarn, coffee, herbs, tobacco, vehicle parts, ships and boats.

More than 50 Indian companies have invested around $3.15 billion in various parts of the Egyptian economy, including chemicals, energy, textiles, garments, agribusiness and retailing, according to India’s External Affairs Ministry.

Moreover, the two counties have held a series of joint war games. They share relevant intelligence and co-ordinate counterterrorism efforts, according to Egyptian officials. In January, Indian and Egyptian troops held joint exercises in India’s Jaisalmer to bolster defence co-operation and share skills.

New Delhi has been steadily focusing on advancing its capabilities to design, develop and manufacture weapons systems under its ambitious Make In India initiative.

Egypt is looking to take advantage of these capabilities to benefit its military industry, Egyptian officials have said. Currently, under consideration, they said, is a joint project to manufacture military hardware in Egypt to mainly target markets in Africa.

“They [Egypt] are ready to work with us and they are also interested in a lot of Indian defence products,” said Ani Trigunayat, a retired Indian diplomat with years of experience in the Middle East.

As a show of India’s growing relations with Egypt, it invited the Arab nation, along with Oman and the UAE, to attend the G20 Summit in September as special guests.

India's Modi on first visit to Egypt

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making his first visit to Egypt where he signed a joint declaration with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to deepend their strategic partnership

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo on Sunday on a rare visit during which both sides pledged to deepen their strategic partnership.

They agreed to boost investment by India, the world's most populous nation, in Egypt, which has the Arab world's largest population, of 105 million, and which is now in the grips of an economic downturn.

Modi, in power since 2014, was on his first visit to the north African country and US ally following a four-day trip to the United States where he met President Joe Biden.

Modi and Sisi "signed a joint declaration to elevate relations to a strategic partnership," which they had first announced in January when Sisi visited New Delhi, a spokesman for the Egyptian leader said.

India and Egypt have pledged to boost bilateral trade by billions of dollars as India is also stepping up investment in Egypt, particularly in renewable energy.

Egypt has suffered a drawn-out economic crisis in which the currency has lost half its value in a year.

The government has in recent months moved to diversify foreign investors, which also include Gulf powers and China.

Sisi bestowed Cairo's highest honour, the Order of the Nile, on Modi and the two leaders affirmed their "mutual commitment" to strengthen relations.

This would include "increasing high-level visits", facilitating direct flights between the capitals, and "developing Indian investments in Egypt," according to the presidency in Cairo.

India is already Egypt's seventh-largest trading partner, according to data from Cairo's central bank, with trade reaching $7 billion last year.

The two leaders agreed in January to increase Indian investments in Egypt, which currently stand at over $3.15 billion, including through a potential "dedicated land area for Indian industries in the Suez Canal Economic Zone".

Those projects include a $12 billion green hydrogen plant to be built by Indian firm ACME.

In 2022, as Russia's Ukraine invasion drove up global grain prices, India banned wheat exports to protect its reserves and rein in inflation, but granted an exception to Egypt, the world's biggest wheat importer.

Modi invited Sisi to a G20 summit India is hosting in September.

Why PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Egypt matters

After the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Cairo from 24 June to 25 June. The trip comes at a time when Egypt has shown interest in joining BRICS and reducing its dependence on the West

Why PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Egypt matters

The next week is doing to be a busy one for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is heading to the United States on 20 June, where he will be meeting President Joe Biden, holding bilaterals and inking crucial deals. After his first official state visit to the US, the PM will be travelling to Egypt.

Modi will travel to Cairo for a state visit from 24 June to 25 June. “This visit to Egypt will mark Prime Minister Modi’s first official trip to the country,” the Ministry of External Affairs informed on Friday.

The invitation to the visit was extended by Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi , who was India’s chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations in January 2023.

We take a look at the agenda of the PM’s visit and how India has revived ties with Egypt in the past nine years under the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government.

What to expect from PM Modi’s Egypt visit

In Cairo, the Indian leader is expected to hold bilaterals with President Sisi, interact with senior dignitaries from the Egyptian government, engage with prominent Egyptian personalities, and meet the diaspora.

The announcement of the PM’s visit comes soon after Egypt formally applied for membership of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) . The West Asian nation also has plans to ditch the US dollar while trading with BRICS nations, a move that promises greater economic cooperation.

Egypt’s willingness to reduce dependence on the US dollar aligns with the BRICS’ vision to promote alternate currencies in international trade, including its own currency.

As Cairo looks to establish stronger ties with emerging economies, PM Modi’s visit assumes significance. During the upcoming visit, there will be talks on defence cooperation, education, and Egypt’s application to join the BRICS. The country is expected to make rapid economic growth, it has abundant natural resources and strategic control over the Suez Canal, which will make its addition to the bloc valuable, according to a report in Financial Express .

“Increased trade and investment between Egypt and the BRICS countries can contribute to economic development and foster greater cooperation within the group… Furthermore, Egypt’s application to join BRICS may influence the perceptions of other Middle Eastern and African nations toward the group,” the report says.

PM Modi has worked towards building stronger ties with Egypt, even inviting the country as a special guest at the G20 summit during India’s presidency.

Sisi’s invite to Modi is a reciprocation of New Delhi’s decision to have him as chief guest for Republic Day.

What did Modi and Sisi discuss in New Delhi?

In January, India and Egypt elevated the bilateral partnership to the level of a strategic partnership. Modi and Sisi decided that the two countries “‘will develop a long-term framework of greater cooperation in political, security, economic and scientific fields”.

According to India’s foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra, there are broadly four elements to the partnership: political, defence and security; economic engagement; scientific and academic collaboration; and cultural and people-to-people contacts.

The two countries also agreed that “concerted action is necessary to end cross-border terrorism” and that they would together alert the international community.

The decision to invite Sisi was part of India’s ongoing efforts to boost ties with Cairo. The president has visited India three times now since he took charge in June 2014 – for this year’s Republic Day, for the Third India-Africa Forum Summit in New Delhi in October 2015 and on a bilateral visit in 2016. He is likely to return in September for the G20 summit.

India wants to become the voice of the “Golbal South”, which includes countries in Asia, Africa and South America and Egypt is an important part of that.

Ahead of Sisi’s January visit, former India ambassador to Egpyt, Navdeep Suri, told DD India that the ties between the two nations have not lived up to their potential in the recent past. But added that India has “picked up the baton” and is trying to give a “fresh momentum” to the relationship with a country, which is “pivotal in its geopolitical location as it straddles Asia and Africa”.

What has changed under PM Modi?

Under PM Modi, the ties between India and Egypt have strengthened. Last year, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited Cairo.

The two countries are exploring opportunities in new and renewable energy, trade and investment, education, tourism and connectivity and have agreed to promote independent thinking in a polarised world. Egypt is keen on establishing a premium institution like an IIT on its soil.

During Singh’s visit, the focus was to expand bilateral defence agreements. Egypt has shown interest in some of the made-in-India technologies like Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, the Akash missile system, and DRDO’s Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW).

Amid wheat shortage caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and restrictions on exports of the grain in India last year, the Modi-led government decided to make an exception for Egypt.

Bilateral trade between India and Egypt has expanded rapidly in 2021-22, amounting to $7.26 billion registering a 75 per cent increase compared to 2020-21, according to media reports.

PM Modi To Visit 11th Century Al-Hakim Mosque In Egypt

PM's visit to Egypt comes 6 months of President El-Sisi's visit to India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the 11th Century Al-Hakim mosque, restored with the help of the Dawoodi Bohra community, during his first visit to Egypt this week.

The prime minister will also go to the Heliopolis War Cemetery to pay tributes to the Indian soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for Egypt during World War 1.

Modi's two-day state visit to Egypt from June 24 at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister since 1997.

Before meeting El-Sisi, the prime minister will hold deliberations with the India Unit, a group of high-level ministers constituted by the Egyptian president to boost relations with India.

Addressing a press conference here, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said there has been an “intense level of ministerial engagement" between India and Egypt, which is also home to a small Indian community.

Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to interact with the member of the Indian community in the north African nation.

Kwatra noted that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav had travelled to Egypt recently.

"We have had, similarly, at least three to four ministers from the Egyptian government who have visited India," he said, adding that the Chairperson of the Suez Canal Authority was on a visit to India.

Kwatra said the high-level exchanges clearly showed the extent of very sharp focus that both India and Egypt were placing on strengthening all aspects of their relationship.

Why Did Modi Call India’s Muslims ‘Infiltrators’? Because He Could.

The brazenness of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vilification of India’s largest minority group made clear he sees few checks at home or abroad on his power.

Modi Calls Muslims ‘Infiltrators’ in Speech During India Elections

Prime minister narendra modi of india was criticized by the opposition for remarks he made during a speech to voters in rajasthan state..

I’m sorry, this is a very disgraceful speech made by the prime minister. But, you know, the fact is that people realize that when he says the Congress Party is going to take all your wealth and give it to the Muslims, that this is just a nakedly communal appeal which normally any civilized election commission would disallow and warn the candidate for speaking like this.

By Mujib Mashal

Reporting from New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his power at home secured and his Hindu-first vision deeply entrenched, has set his sights in recent years on a role as a global statesman , riding India’s economic and diplomatic rise. In doing so, he has distanced himself from his party’s staple work of polarizing India’s diverse population along religious lines for its own electoral gain.

His silence provided tacit backing as vigilante groups continued to target non-Hindu minority groups and as members of his party routinely used hateful and racist language , even in Parliament, against the largest of those groups, India’s 200 million Muslims. With the pot kept boiling, Mr. Modi’s subtle dog whistles — with references to Muslim dress or burial places — could go a long way domestically while providing enough deniability to ensure that red carpets remained rolled out abroad for the man leading the world’s largest democracy.

Just what drove the prime minister to break with this calculated pattern in a fiery campaign speech on Sunday — when he referred to Muslims by name as “infiltrators” with “more children” who would get India’s wealth if his opponents took power — has been hotly debated. It could be a sign of anxiety that his standing with voters is not as firm as believed, analysts said. Or it could be just a reflexive expression of the kind of divisive religious ideology that has fueled his politics from the start.

But the brazenness made clear that Mr. Modi sees few checks on his enormous power. At home, watchdog institutions have been largely bent to the will of his Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P. Abroad, partners increasingly turn a blind eye to what Mr. Modi is doing in India as they embrace the country as a democratic counterweight to China.

“Modi is one of the world’s most skilled and experienced politicians,” said Daniel Markey, a senior adviser in the South Asia program at the United States Institute of Peace. “He would not have made these comments unless he believed he could get away with it.”

Mr. Modi may have been trying to demonstrate this impunity, Mr. Markey said, “to intimidate the B.J.P.’s political opponents and to show them — and their supporters — just how little they can do in response.”

The prime minister sees himself as the builder of a new, modern India on the march toward development and international respect. But he also wants to leave a legacy that is distinctly different from that of the leaders who founded the country as a secular republic after British colonial rule.

Before joining its political offshoot, he spent more than a decade as a cultural foot soldier of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or R.S.S., a right-wing organization founded in 1925 with the mission of making India a Hindu state. The group viewed it as treason when an independent India agreed to a partition that created Pakistan as a separate nation for Muslims, embraced secularism and gave all citizens equal rights. A onetime member went so far as to assassinate Mohandas K. Gandhi in outrage.

Narendra Modi is surrounded by men and women, most of whom are performing a salute.

Over his decade in national power, Mr. Modi has been deeply effective in advancing some of the central items of the Hindu-right agenda. He abolished the semi-autonomy of the Muslim-majority state of Jammu and Kashmir. He enacted a citizenship law widely viewed as prejudiced against Muslims. And he helped see through the construction of a grand temple to the Hindu deity Ram on a plot long disputed between Hindus and Muslims.

The violent razing in 1992 of the mosque that had stood on that land — which Hindu groups said was built on the plot of a previous temple — was central to the national movement of Hindu assertiveness that ultimately swept Mr. Modi to power more than two decades later.

More profoundly, Mr. Modi has shown that the broader goals of a Hindu state can largely be achieved within the bounds of India’s constitution — by co-opting the institutions meant to protect equality.

Officials in his party have a ready rebuttal to any complaint along these lines. How could Mr. Modi discriminate against anyone, they say, if all Indian citizens benefit equally from his government’s robust welfare offerings — of toilets, of roofs over heads, of monthly rations?

That argument, analysts say, is telling in showing how Mr. Modi has redefined democratic power not as leadership within checks and balances, but as the broad generosity of a strongman, even as he has redefined citizenship in practice to make clear there is a second class.

Secularism — the idea that no religion will be favored over any other — has largely been co-opted to mean that no religion will be allowed to deny Hindus their dominance as the country’s majority, his critics say. Officials under Mr. Modi, who wear their religion on their sleeves and publicly mix prayer with politics, crack down on public expressions of other religions as breaching India’s secularism.

While right-wing officials promote conversion to Hinduism, which they describe as a “return home,” they have introduced laws within many of the states they govern that criminalize conversion from Hinduism. Egged on by such leaders, Hindu extremists have lynched Muslim men accused of transporting cows or beef and hounded them over charges of “love jihad” — or luring Hindu women. Vigilantes have frequently barged into churches and accosted priests they believe have engaged in proselytizing or conversion.

“What they have done is to create a permissive environment which encourages hate and valorizes hate,” said Harsh Mander, a former civil servant who is now a campaigner for social harmony.

In reference to Mr. Modi’s speech on Sunday, he added: “This open resort to this kind of hate speech will only encourage that hard-line Hindu right in society.”

Tom Vadakkan, a spokesman for the B.J.P., said the prime minister’s comments on Muslims had been misinterpreted. Mr. Modi, Mr. Vadakkan said, was referring to “intruders” or “illegal migrants” who the party claims are being used by the political opposition to “redefine the demography.”

Privately, Western diplomats in New Delhi do little to hide their discomfort with some of Mr. Modi actions as a democratic ally, from the targeting of minorities to his crackdowns on opposition and dissent. But they acknowledge that he is exploiting a particularly open season in the global order, with many of their own capitals providing a less positive example than they once did, and with so much focus on China and trade deals.

Mr. Markey, the Washington-based analyst, said the U.S. government was holding back from voicing concerns publicly for several reasons beyond its national interest in having India serve as an economic and geopolitical counterweight to China.

The United States, he said, realizes the growing limits of its public criticism in changing partner nations’ behavior. That was demonstrated most recently by the repeated instances in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel ignored President Biden’s demands that the Israeli military change its conduct within the war in Gaza.

Criticism of Mr. Modi, Mr. Markey added, could also backfire for U.S. politicians who “do not want to get crosswise with Indian diaspora groups.”

But Mr. Modi may not remain immune as he pursues closer partnerships with the United States in areas like joint weapons manufacturing, transfer of high technology and sharing of intelligence.

“My sense is that Washington’s increasing discomfort with Modi’s domestic politics is gradually lowering the ceiling of potential U.S. cooperation with India,” Mr. Markey said. “The question is just how far Washington is willing to trust India. Will India be treated as an ally in everything but name, or as a partner more like Vietnam or Saudi Arabia?”

A recap of what happened in pm modi's us state visit.

-On the first day of his state visit to the US, PM Modi held talks with Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, Twitter, and SpaceX. Musk expressed his admiration for Modi, stating, "I am a fan of Modi." He also hinted at the possibility of bringing Starlink to India along with Tesla's introduction to the country.

-On the third day of the visit, President Biden hosted a state dinner at the White House with approximately 400 attendees, including businessmen, CEOs, and renowned personalities.

-On the fourth day, PM Modi met with various CEOs and addressed the Indian diaspora at the Ronald Reagan Centre in Washington DC before departing for Egypt.

How is a ‘State visit’ different from an ‘Official visit’?

An official visit, alternatively referred to as an official working visit or working visit, typically entails less grandeur and ceremonial display compared to a state visit. While an official visit may involve events such as an official dinner, it generally lacks the extravagant splendor associated with a state dinner.

Why is it a State visit again? What does it mean?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a State visit to the United States and now to Egypt. Why is it being called a “State visit”?

A state visit is an official and formal visit by the head of state of one country to another, upon the invitation of the receiving country's head of state. During a state visit, the host country's head of state serves as the official host, accompanying and hosting the visiting leader throughout the visit.

First bilateral visit to Egypt by an Indian PM since 1997

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's State visit to Egypt will also be the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minsiter to the country since 1997.

"We are very much looking forward to the visit of Prime Minister Modi to Cairo from 24th to 25th of June. The visit is a very historic occasion because the last bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister was as far back as 1997," India's Ambassador to Egypt Ajit Gupte was quoted as saying by PTI.

Ajit Gupte, India's Ambassador to Egypt said that the “Heliopolis War Memorial” that PM Modi will visit stands as a “tribute to 3,799 Indian soldiers” who made the ultimate sacrifice in different battles fought in Egypt during World War I. Although the memorial was erected by the Commonwealth, it was to honour the Indian soldiers who valiantly defended Egypt against the Ottoman forces' attacks.

Modi to visit 11th Century Al-Hakim mosque in Egypt

During his two-day state visit to Egypt, PM Modi will tour the Al-Hakim Mosque, an 11th-century mosque that has been restored with assistance from the Dawoodi Bohra community. The mosque, constructed during the Fatimid dynasty, has been renovated by the Bohra community since the 1970s. It is noteworthy that the Bohra community in India traces its origins back to the Fatimid dynasty.

PM Modi's first State visit to Egypt

After a successful state visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proceeded to embark on another maiden state visit to Egypt, a Middle Eastern nation, upon the invitation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The visit, scheduled for June 24 and 25, will involve bilateral talks between Modi and El-Sisi, as well as visits to various places, including the Heliopolis War Memorial and Al-Hakim Mosque.

India's Modi reported to Electoral Commission after referring to Muslims as 'infiltrators' during campaign speech

Narendra Modi, a Hindu nationalist seeking to be re-elected as India's prime minister for a third term, has repeatedly faced accusations of discriminating against Muslims, which he denies.

Narendra Modi after Chandrayaan-3 landed on the moon

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing a widespread backlash after referring to Muslims as "infiltrators" during a campaign speech over the weekend.

Congress, the main opposition party to Mr Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Monday reported the prime minister's "deeply objectionable" comments to the Election Commission, saying they violated electoral law.

The comments were made by the Hindu nationalist leader, who is seeking a rare third consecutive term since first being elected in 2014 , during a speech on Sunday - just days after India's mammoth, seven-week election kicked off.

Almost a billion people across 21 states and territories are expected to cast their vote in the next 40 days, with results due on 4 June.

In his speech, Mr Modi said the Congress election manifesto promised to confiscate and redistribute the wealth of Indians, which it denies.

Mr Modi said if the party adhered to remarks in 2006 of then Congress Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that minority Muslims should have the "first claim on resources" to share in the fruits of development, then wealth would be distributed to "infiltrators" and those who have "more children".

Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said Mr Modi's "deeply objectionable" statement violated sections of the law that prohibits candidates from asking people to vote or refrain from voting for anyone on the grounds of "religion", "community" or "religious symbols".
