From roller coasters to iconic restaurants, shops, games, and beautiful coastal views, the Santa Monica Pier is one of the most recognizable, must-see spots in Los Angeles!

The Santa Monica Pier, with its amusement park, beach, and proximity to the city, is one of the most iconic attractions for visitors to Los Angeles and Southern California.

It hasn’t gained its reputation as a national historic landmark without reason! 

With a whole week’s worth of attractions packed onto one beautiful pier, there’s something for everyone. 

For a first-timer, however, the plentiful activities and bustling crowds may feel a tad fast-paced if you’re going in blind!

Amidst the rides and games, street performers, vendors selling art and Santa Monica Pier souvenirs, and cars driving right out over the ocean, there is movement in all directions at all times on the pier. 

If you’re anything like me, this amount of action can be equally exciting and overwhelming at times. To help with this, I like to show up with an idea of what to expect and where to invest my time and energy. 

From my several experiences visiting the pier both alone and with friends and family, I’ve compiled a Santa Monica Pier guide.

Santa Monia Pier Overview

• Location: The Santa Monica Pier is located in Santa Monica, a coastal city just a 30-minute drive west of central Los Angeles. The pier juts out over the Pacific Ocean from the bottom of Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica beside Santa Monica Beach.
• Origins: The Santa Monica Pier was first opened in 1909 and has served as a popular fishing and entertainment destination in the Los Angeles region for well over a century!
• Santa Monica Pier Hours: The Santa Monica Pier is open year round daily from 6am-10pm.
• Cost: Santa Monica Pier admission is free! Games and rides each have their own cost, though. Depending on what you do, your day can range from free of charge to a couple hundred dollars.
• Recommended time to spend: It’s possible just to stroll up and down the pier in under an hour. But if you’re planning to get involved in the action, you’ll want at least two hours. You could easily spend a day around the pier, but three to four hous is reasonable.

Things To Do at the Santa Monica Pier

Pacific Park Amusement Park

Pacific Park is the largest and grandest of the Santa Monica Pier attractions. The amusement park is located right on the pier over the Pacific Ocean. 

Its iconic ferris wheel is visible clearly on Santa Monica State Beach as well as for miles down the west coast! 

Pacific Park first opened in 1996 and occupies two acres of rides, games, eats, and treats for the whole family while also remaining in reach of the Pacific Ocean breeze. 

The park is open year-round from 11am-9pm daily (10pm on the weekends) and is free to enter, so folks can come and go as they please.

Santa Monica Pier rides, and games are priced individually and range from $5-$12. If you’re a big ride buff, there’s the option to purchase an Unlimited Ride Wristband for $40 ($20 for kids under 7).

Ride the Historic Carousel 

The historic Santa Monica Pier Carousel is located in the Loof Hippodrome building at the far end of the Santa Monica Pier. 

While going for a spin on the carousel, remember to take a look at the building itself. Constructed in 1916, it’s the oldest building on the pier and a national historic landmark!

The carousel was originally constructed in 1922 and remains available to ride Monday-Thursday from 10am-5pm, and Friday-Sunday from 11am-7pm. It costs $3 for all riders. It’s also wheelchair accessible!

Visit The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium: Heal The Bay Aquarium

The Heal The Bay Aquarium is located on the lower level of the Santa Monica Pier. It’s open year-round Wednesday-Sunday from 12pm-4pm (adults for $10, kids 12 and under are free). 

Inside the aquarium, you’ll find a diverse array of animal and plant life from the Santa Monica Bay, including a kelp forest, a shark nursery, eels, lobsters, jellyfish, and much more!

Check Out The Playland Arcade

The Playland Arcade dates back to the 1950s! It offers all the best of 20th-century arcade nostalgia, including air hockey, Skeeball, pinball, foosball, and lots more!

This iconic Santa Monica Pier arcade is located right beside Pacific Park. It’s open daily from 10am-10pm and is one of the must-do activities on the pier.

Witness the students training at the Trapeze School!     

Perhaps one of the most unique attractions of the Santa Monica Pier is the Trapeze School .

Adjacent to the Playland Arcade, go watch as trapeze and aerial arts students fly through the air right before your eyes! It’s a free circus show!

Visit the Iconic Route 66 Sign & Last Stop Shop

The original Route 66 sign at the end of the Santa Monica Pier marks the end of the historic American highway.

There, you can visit the Last Stop Shop for one-of-a-kind “Route 66” merch to commemorate the iconic American east-to-west route.

Santa Monica Pier Events

In addition to all of the year round attractions on the Santa Monica Pier, there are special events throughout the year on the pier! Here are some festivities that the Santa Monica Pier hosts:

• In June, catch the Santa Monica Pier 360 Beach Festival for free, all ages family fun, or check out the PRIDE festival and PRIDE events happening all month!
• Later in the summer, the pier is a perfect place to spend the 4th of July or Wednesday evenings for the Twilight Summer music series , with concerts running until late August-September.
• During non-summer months, meet Santa Monicans at Third Thursday’s Locals Night: Once a month, join the car show, music, youth activities, and more!
• Wellness & Waves : A weekly community event focused on health and wellness activities.

What to Eat at the Santa Monica Pier

Amidst all the action, there are plenty of choices for food right on the pier, as well as around the Santa Monica area. 

Below is a list of dining options ranging from grab-and-go to fine dining, both in and around the Santa Monica Pier.

On the Pier:

• Soda Jerks: Inside the historic carousel building, Soda Jerks appeals to nostalgia with classic 1940s American ice cream and soda shop vibes.
• PierBurger : A classic all-American burger joint with window service as well as indoor and outdoor dining. 
• Bubba Gump Shrimp : Arguably the most famous of the Santa Monica Pier restaurants, Bubba Gump Shrimp is part of the iconic American seafood chain made famous by the film Forest Gump.
• Seaside on the Pier : Fresh seafood and classic American food in a casual setting. 

Off the Pier:

• Cassia: An award-winning, upscale South Asian cuisine spot recognized as one of LA’s top restaurants. One of the more pricey dining options. 
• Birdie G’s: American cuisine with Eastern European influence served in a trendy, industrial setting in Bergamot Station.
• Crudo e Nudo : Local, fresh seafood with modern Italian twists, in a cozy setting.

History & Fun Facts About the Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier was built in 1909 and became the West Coast’s first concrete pier, reaching 1600 feet into the ocean! 

Interestingly, the Santa Monica Pier was originally designed to help with the city’s sewage disposal into the ocean.

The original purpose was abandoned quickly (thank goodness!), and the pier instantly became a favorite destination for fishing and other forms of leisure. 

 In 1916, entrepreneur Charles Looff constructed the Looff Pleasure Pier on the municipal pier. His first project was the carousel, which still operates today! 

Looff’s vision then expanded to include a roller coaster, bowling and billiards, and a games room. 

The pier has a long history of resilience between the Great Depression and a devastating storm in 1983, which destroyed a third of the pier.

In 1996 the Pacific Park opened, returning the pier to its former amusement status with a rollercoaster and many more rides and games!

• The white and blue arch of the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor is a historical icon dating back to the 1940s internationally renowned boat dock. The first person to buy space for his boat was Charlie Chaplin, making this a popular location for tourists to see stars.
• The Pier collapsed during the Great Depression, causing one LA local to open a casino on his boat off the shore. For some time, the pier was a seedier, not-so-family-friendly place.
• The pier has been featured in several Hollywood films, including Forest Gump, The Sting, Hancock, Her, 2012, Iron Man, Rocky 3 , and many more!
• The Pacific Wheel is the world’s first solar-powered ferris wheel!

Santa Monica Pier Directions, Parking & How to Get There

If you’re driving

If you’re heading to Santa Monica by car, the area is located right on the Pacific Coast Highway, making it a popular stop for California road-trippers heading south down the coast.

Parking is made easier thanks to this real-time parking map . Here are a few of my preferred locations:

• Parking lot on the Pier | 300 Santa Monica Pier
• Lot 1 North | 1550 Appian Way
• Hot Dog on a Stick | 1633 Ocean Front Walk

Other options

There’s also an accessible city transit system in LA that offers relatively direct access to Santa Monica daily. 

If you’re coming from Los Angeles by foot, Bus 8 Downtown Santa Monica / UCLA will bring you right to the pier at Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue. 

Another fun option is to use LA’s bike share service , which is a bike rental platform that reaches all over Los Angeles by bicycle.

This is definitely my preferred way to get around the coastal beach areas in order to avoid looking for parking!

Best Time to Visit the Santa Monica Pier

While the Santa Monica Pier is bustling year-round, it is definitely most lively through the summer months, May-September.

This is when many of the events happen, the Trapeze school is open, and all the street performers are out to share their tricks. 

That said, it can get quite hot between July and August. Make sure you prepare the family for the summer heat or spend part of the day on Santa Monica State Beach!

I would also recommend an earlier start if you’re hoping to find convenient parking and beat some of the lines. 

Try to get there around 10:30-11am and stay into the early afternoon, and then perhaps stroll down off the pier onto Ocean Avenue and find yourself a nice spot for food in the area.

Tips for Visiting the Santa Monica Pier

• If you’re visiting on a budget, I’d recommend eating breakfast beforehand or hitting one of the fruit stands or coffee kiosks down the beach on the boardwalk before the pier. This will save you a couple of bucks on food before you get started!
• Save the solar-powered ferris wheel for sunset and take in the stunning views of the horizon! Santa Monica Pier at night is absolutely beautiful.
• After a day spent on the pier, take a bike ride south along the bike paths beside the beach and parks at sunset, and find yourself in Venice Beach for the evening!
• Santa Monica hotels can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you choose to go a little bit more inland–just remember to book in advance.

What is so special about the Santa Monica Pier? Is it Worth Visiting?

So, is it worth all the hype? 

Absolutely. Taking a walk along the pier, hanging out at the nearby Santa Monica State Beach, eating from all the food stalls, and admiring the beautiful sunset–there’s not much better.

It’s definitely a really fun way to spend a Los Angeles summer day with the family and experience so many iconic establishments. It’s a must-see for a Los Angeles visitor and an iconic Southern California staple!

Santa monica pier.

Santa Monica Pier is one of LA's top attractions.

This historic pier bustles with activity, and has an amusement park, video arcade, carousel, aquarium and restaurants. 

Access to the pier is free, but tickets are required for the Pacific Park amusement park , ferris wheel , carousel , and aquarium.

Paid parking is available at the Santa Monica Pier parking lot, accessible off Ocean Avenue . You can also walk five minutes from downtown  Santa Monica , to the Santa Monica Pier.

There are two parts to the Santa Monica Pier, built seven years apart. The first section was constructed in 1909 as a municipal pier for fisherman, and at 1,600 feet is the longest section of the Santa Monica Pier. The shorter section on the south side was added in 1916 as an entertainment pier. 

10 best things to do at Santa Monica Pier

1. Ride the historic carousel housed inside the  Looff Hippodrome , the oldest building on the pier . 

The beautiful Looff Hippodrome has survived storms and demolition attempts, but is miraculously still standing.  The carousel was constructed in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for the Venice Pier.  It was relocated to Santa Monica Pier in 1947, and has 44 horses, 2 sleighs, a rabbit and goat.  Check ticket prices .

2. Visit the fun Pacific Park amusement park, with a rollercoaster and ferris wheel.

The two-acre Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, is intended to capture the glory days of vintage seaside parks, with a rollercoaster, ferris wheel, carnival rides, bumper cars, a swinging ship, and rides for little kids. Check ticket prices for rides.

In the early 20th century, many Southern Californian piers had popular amusement parks, however Santa Monica has the only remaining amusement park on a pier on the West Coast!

3. Play pinball machines, air hockey and skeeball at the  Playland Arcade,  adjacent to Pacific Park (on the left below).

4. Watch students fly through the air at the Trapeze School , next door to the Playland Arcade .

5. Visit the Heal the Bay Aquarium  on the lower level of the Santa Monica Pier. 

See touch tanks with hermit crabs and sea urchins, a kelp forest, and aquariums full of jelly fish and sharks. Check admission (kids under 12 are free).

6. Stroll along the 1,600 foot municipal pier for glorious views of the ocean and mountains, and see the famous End or Route 66 sign.  

7. Pick up some fishing gear at the last stop on Route 66.  

The  Route 66 Last Stop Shop  is at the end of Santa Monica Pier, and sells Route 66 souvenirs, and bait and tackle.

Casual restaurants include  Mariasol  (mexican),  Bubba Gump Shrimp Company  (seafood), and  The   Albright  (seafood).

The pier's iconic ferris wheel is visible from miles away, and is an enchanting place to visit at night when illuminated by 174,000 LED lights. It's also one of the most instagrammed placed in LA.

The Santa Monica Pier had humble beginnings.  In 1909 the 1,600-foot municipal pier was constructed to deposit treated sewage in the ocean. This practice ended shortly thereafter, and the pier became popular for fishing.

In 1916 entrepreneur and renowned carousel maker Charles Looff constructed the Looff Pleasure Pier on the south side of the city's municipal pier.  The first attraction was an ornate carousel housed within the  Looff Hippodrome, designed in a flamboyant moorish-byzantine style.  Looff's new amusement park grew to include a wooden roller coaster named the  Blue Streak Racer , an Aeroscope Ride , Bowling and Billiards Room , and fun house.  

Charles Looff died in 1918, and his son sold the pleasure pier to the  Santa Monica Amusement Company in 1924.  They replaced the rollercoaster with a faster one known as the Whirlwind Dipper, however their crowning achievement was the construction of the 15,000 square foot LaMonica Ballroom .  This  ushered in a glamorous new era of big bands and dances, and was the biggest dance venue in the West that could accommodate 5,000 people.  The massive building had a dozen minarets that were illuminated at night, and it was designed to look like a Moorish palace.

During the 1930s Depression, the golden age of seaside amusement parks was over, and the rollercoaster and rides were closed or demolished.  The LaMonica Ballroom was utilized at different times as a jail, convention center, and lifeguard headquarters. 

A local sailor named Olaf Olsen also became the inspiration for the world famous Popeye cartoon during these Depression years.  He'd retired from the US Navy and ran fishing charters off the Santa Monica Pier.  Olsen provided 10% of his catch to poor families during the Depression, and was also instrumental in preventing commercial net fishing off the coastline.  This larger than life figure regaled kids with fabulous tales of his travels, and eventually caught the attention of local cartoonist Elzie. C. Segar. The rest is history.

The iconic Santa Monica Yacht Harbor sign was installed in 1940, to commemorate the new ramp at the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier.  By WWII the Santa Monica Pier had became an important commercial fishing port to feed the troops.

The pleasure pier was purchased in 1943 by Venice banker Walter Newcomb, and in 1947 he relocated a carousel from the Venice Pier to the Santa Monica Pier to replace the Looff Carousel.  Walter Newcomb died in 1954 and his wife Enid Newcomb was left in charge.  That same year Enid encouraged some family friends to open the Playland Arcade. The LaMonica Ballroom was converted into a rollerskating rink in 1958 but was demolished in 1963.

The Newcomb family finally sold the pier to the city in the 1970's, but by the 1970s the pier was not in great shape and was under threat of demolition.  There was even a proposal to demolish the pier and replace it with a bridge to a resort on an artificial island.  Locals campaigned to save the Santa Monica Pier and  Proposition 1 was passed to prevent it from ever being demolished.  Two key supporters were Paul Newman and Robert Redford who had starred in the 1973 movie The Sting, with scenes filmed at the pier.

There was a devastating storm in 1983 that destroyed a third of the pier, but the community again rallied to ensure it was saved and rebuilt.

In 1996 the Pacific Park finally opened, restoring the pier to it's former amusement park glory of the 1930s complete with a rollercoaster and other rides.

The Complete Guide To The Santa Monica Pier and Amusement Park

For fun in the sun, after-dark thrills, perfect selfie spots, fascinating people watching, fresh seafood, and even educational entertainment, you can’t beat the Santa Monica Pier .  

For most of its 110 years, the pier has attracted locals and tourists alike with the promise of endless entertainment options. But it didn’t start out that way. The West Coast’s first concrete pier debuted in September 1909 as a public utility for piping treated sewage out to sea.

But it didn’t take long for someone to put the fun in function. That someone was carousel carver Charles Looff who added a wider wooden pier alongside the municipal one and plopped an amusement park on top of it in 1916. He also added the Hippodrome, which still houses an antique merry-go-round. Looff sold the pier to a group of realtors in 1924 who expanded the property to include the La Monica Ballroom. The dance hall drew 50,000 people on opening night, causing the city’s first recorded traffic jam. After the Depression, it found renewed purpose as a convention center, lifeguard headquarters, roller rink, and the city jail. After World War II, it hosted musical acts like Roy Rogers and Desi Arnaz. The Hoffman Hayride, hosted in the ballroom, became the first variety show broadcast live in 1948.

In 1929, cartoonist Elzie C. Segar, who often brainstormed ideas for his comic strip  Thimble Theatre  in a rented rowboat at the pier, was inspired by Olaf Olsen, a retired Navy man who operated a fleet there, to create Popeye.

In 1934, the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor opened and one of its first moorings was purchased by Charlie Chaplin. The breakwater wound up changing the ocean current and caused the beach to expand into the wide swath it is today. The calm harbor was also a haven for watersports. Paddleboards were just as trendy then as they are today and the Hui Maiokioki Club (later renamed Manoa) organized races and invented paddleboard water polo and ballet in the 1940s.

By the ‘70s, it had become a hippie hangout and an eyesore. To make it more viable, a city manager proposed building a resort island and removing the pier to make way for a bridge. In 1973, the city council agreed, but plans were tossed when the community fought back until the decision was rescinded. Voters passed 1975’s Proposition 1 to preserve the pier forever. Severe storms destroyed a third of it in 1983, but it was rebuilt to the way it looks today by 1990 and the new theme park opened in 1996.

Like most LA landmarks, SMP has had its fair share of screen time. It’s been seen in TV shows and movies like  Forrest Gump, Top Chef, Hannah Montana, Hancock, Iron Man, The Sting, Sharknado, Beverly Hills 90210, Charlie’s Angels, Criminal Minds, South Park, Modern Family , and  Her . Jack even tried to impress Rose in  Titanic  by telling her he bravely rode the pier’s roller coaster. Too bad that ride wasn’t built until four years after the ship sank. 

What To See and Do 

On the boardwalk, down by the sea, there truly is something for everyone including an amusement park, aquarium, fishing, and spectacular sunsets. 

• Pacific Park , the last of the West Coast’s amusement parks located on a pier, has carnival games, fair food, and 12 rides including a 35-mph roller coaster, spinning sharks, a sea dragon swing, and traffic-themed bumper cars. It also has the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel.

• Ride the antique hand-carved wooden carousel inside the historic Hippodrome built when Looff was in charge.

• Heal the Bay operates a marine-education center under the carousel building. There are more than 100 species, all of which live in the bay just outside the door and some of which can be touched, on exhibit at the aquarium. Kids under 12 are free and California locals get a $2 discount on admission.

• The same family has run an arcade at SMP since 1954. Today, Playland Arcade has a mix of nostalgic classics like pinball machines, skeeball, and air hockey and updated video games, many of which help players earn prizes. 

• Fly high like Carrie Bradshaw on Sex And The City by taking a class in trapeze, silks, or trampoline at Trapeze School New York .  

• Fishing from the top deck is legal. The bait and tackle shop rents equipment, sells bait, and gives advice on what’s biting.

• Rent bikes and ride the paved path known as The Strand north to Pacific Palisades or south through Venice and Manhattan Beach to Torrance County Beach. All together the trail is 22 miles long.

• Take a selfie with the controversial Route 66 End of Trail sign. It’s controversial because the pier was designated as the official finish of the famed road at the 100 th -anniversary celebration in 2009. It’s a replica of the sign that once stood at the intersection of Ocean and Santa Monica Boulevard, the true terminus of the highway.

Annual Programming

These special events will help you determine when you #wishyouwerepier.

• ROGA is held most Saturdays from late March to August. It pairs an 8 am beach/pier run with a 9 am yoga class on the boardwalk. 

• The Twilight On The Pier concert series has set the Santa Monica night to music for 35 years. Typically held August through September, it features free live music and DJ sets as well as art, comedy, games, and a beer/wine garden.

• Pride is celebrated for the entire month of June.  

• Pier 360 is a free all-ages two-day festival in June that combines ocean sports competitions, live bands, food, drinks, and beach culture brands.

• November and December are reserved for a variety of holiday-themed programming including craft classes, puppet shows, art installations, holiday markets, and interactive experience.

Where To Eat

From fast to fancy, there’s plenty here to put in your stomach.

• Casual and quick options include Pier Burger , Japadog (hot dogs with Japanese-style toppings), and the Pacific Park food court.

• When at the shore, it makes sense to slurp down seafood. The Albright was the pier’s first sustainable business and has live oysters, crab, and lobster. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and The Lobster (an expensive sit-down spot) specialize in their titular crustaceans, but also have other fish and meat. Seaside On The Pier has seafood plus pizza, burgers, and a rooftop lounge.

• Rusty’s Surf Ranch usually pairs comfort food like chicken wings and fried pickles with live music. 

• At the very end of the pier since 1991, Mariasol serves in coastal Mexican cuisine — think tableside guacamole, shrimp fajitas, and Baja fish tacos — and is a great spot for sipping margaritas during sunset. 

• Satisfy a sweet tooth with ice cream from Soda Jerks . The latter offers tours of the soda fountain, which includes a sundae or specialty drink with admission.

• Although it isn’t technically on the pier, corndog connoisseurs should make the pilgrimage to the original Hot Dog On A Stick , which is about 350 feet south on the beach level. It was there in 1946 that Dave Barham first adapted his mom’s cornbread recipe.

How To Get There

Go west to Santa Monica State Beach via Interstate 10 and the Pacific Coast Highway (1). The famous neon sign crowns the entry ramp where Ocean and Colorado Avenues intersect. The ramp is open to pedestrians, bikes, and cars. Pier deck parking is also accessible by the ramp. Use Appian Way to park in either of the two beach-level lots. Or ride the Metro’s Expo Line to the Downtown Santa Monica Station and then walk straight down Colorado for less than 10 minutes. It's also a 10–minute walk to the Third Street Promenade and nine miles from LAX.

Travel Guide to Visiting Santa Monica deserves its own entry. Visiting Santa Monica Pier wasn’t included in yesterday’s content about our Favorite SoCal Beach Piers for one reason: size. Not just the size of the actual pier, which is huge, but the size of the content of Santa Monica Pier and everything to do. I mean, look at the size of it! We are here to help but giving you a visual tour of visiting Santa Monica Pier and a travel guide with tips and photography.

Do you want to fly on a trapeze? See a 1920s carousel? Visit an aquarium? Listen to street performers? Shop? Play arcade games? Ride at a carnival? Eat at a restaurant? And, oh yeah, go to the beach? You can do all of this at Santa Monica Pier.

Santa Monica Pier is probably one of the most iconic places when you think about Los Angeles. Ironically, it’s located in the city of Santa Monica itself, just south of LA. Famously known for being the final destination of Route 66, the highway from Chicago that travels to this very spot.

Tips for Visiting Santa Monica Pier

Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Santa Monica Pier: – Santa Monica Pier has parking directly on the pier if you are lucky enough to get it. – Admission to Santa Monica Pier is free, but some of the attractions have individual costs. – The historic Carousel is located inside the Hippodrome. Built in the early 1920s, the wooden carousel still offers rides for around a few dollars and is ADA compatible. – Pacific Park is the amusement park about halfway up the pier. Rides cost $5-$10 or you can buy unlimited ride wristbands. Santa Monica Pier: LA’s 100 Year Old Carnival Pier

The Santa Monica Pier is one of the most popular attractions in Los Angeles County. As the endpoint for Route 66 and the iconic pier with the Ferris Wheel and rides, it is easy to see why it is so popular. I, for one don’t go very often because of the crowds, but if you have never been, you should go at least once and see it for yourself. Here his all the information so you can do so.

• There is street parking around Ocean Blvd or parking in the lot near the pier for $10-$15 a day, depending on the season.
• The best time for fewer crowds is before 8 AM on the weekend or during the day on weekdays
• Location: 200 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA 90401

Getting There

Santa Monica Pier is located at the end of Colorado Ave in Santa Monica. I usually try to park along the street on Ocean Ave as that allows you to avoid some of the traffic and just pay for street parking. From here you can walk to the pier.

If you parked on Ocean Ave, then you will want to make your way back down to Colorado, and you can pass under the famous Santa Monica Pier sign and walk down the path that parallels the road to the pier itself.

When you get to the pier, you will be walking on the wooden planks past restaurants and vendors selling everything from shirts to shot glasses.

The pier doesn’t have a lot of rhyme or reason to me; you just need to explore and see what piques your interest. Some of the options they have are as follows.

Right in the middle is the End of Route 66 sign, which is popular with people who have completed the drive and tourists as well. I completed Route 66 in June 2019, and you can read about the journey here .

Pacific Park

Walking past the sign, you will be greeted by the small amusement park that sits along the pier.

If you have kids, then I am sure these attractions will be a huge hit for them, but I haven’t ridden any so I can’t report on it. It is fantastic to see at night though, when it is all lit up and reflecting off the water.

Walking out to the end of the pier, you have some more Route 66 memorabilia and the Marisol restaurant.

I haven’t gotten a chance to eat here, but I imagine it would at least have a beautiful view while you eat.

I tend just to continue walking around the pier and looking for fun photo angles when I go, but that is about all that is there.

The Santa Monica Pier is also a great spot to explore at night.

I recommend parking in the lot near the mall and Third Street Promenade and then you can walk around the shops before heading over to the pier.

The pier is usually really busy at night as well and it is fun to take photos of the Ferris wheel and the ocean crashing below.

It is located just 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, making it quite convenient to visit for a daytrip. It is also only 15 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport, so it could be the first place you visit when you get off the plane.

While it may be best known for its pier and the beachfront, Santa Monica offers a lot more and is a bustling city that is home to over 90,000 residents.

Here are all of the top reasons why we think that Santa Monica is worth visiting.

1. Unlimited Fun in the Sun

We believe that the famed Santa Monica Pier and Santa Monica State Beach are already reasons enough to visit the city.

The Pier offers many attractions and things to do for the whole family to enjoy. There is a roller coaster, ferris wheel, and tons of restaurants and food carts that can take up a whole afternoon.

It is also a great place to catch one of California’s most dazzling sunsets.

Meanwhile, Santa Monica’s beach is the perfect place to relax and catch some rays. This beach is one of the most beautiful spots in all of Southern California and is a must-see for any first time visitor. Best of all, the beach is free to enjoy!

It features beach volleyball courts, a muscle beach area, and bike paths. The beach will also be hosting beach volleyball and surfing for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

You can also rent a bike or some roller blades and go all the way down the boardwalk and reach Venice Beach.

2. Parks to Enjoy

Santa Monica is not just about the beach life. It offers numerous green spaces across the city where you can relax without getting any sand in your clothes.

Check out Palisades Park, which is a 26-acre park located along the northern shores of Santa Monica.

This elevated bluff offers stunning views of the ocean and is another excellent (and free) activity for the whole family to enjoy.

There is also Tongva Park, a recently revitalized green space that features a playground, an amphitheater, and waterfalls. It provides scenic views of the ocean and of Santa Monica Pier.

3. Beach Clubs

No visit to Santa Monica can be complete without a visit to one of their beach clubs. These social houses are located right on the beach front and offer a cool space to eat, swim, play, and relax.

One of the most famous beach clubs is the Annenberg Community Beach House , which was commissioned by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s. This public beach facility is open to the public and features a swimming pool and an art gallery.

You can also check out Jonathan Club, which is a private social club with good food and a fun atmosphere.

It can take up to 30 minutes just to go from the exit off the highway to the parking garage next to the pier.

So, we advise you to plan ahead when driving or to consider using public transportation so that you don’t have to worry about the traffic or pay for parking.

It's easy to spend an entire day there perusing the shops, restaurants, and the only admission-free amusement park in Southern California without experiencing everything that the pier has to offer. To make the most of your visit, here's an easy guide to make sure you know all the highlights.

The carousel

At the base of the Santa Monica Pier is the Loof Hippodrome, which was originally built in 1916 and is now part of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Inside the Hippodrome you'll find an old-fashioned carousel , where riders can spin around on classic horses while nostalgic Wurlitzer music plays in the background ($2 for adults, $1 for children). A few steps away from the carousel, you'll find Soda Jerks , a 1930's-style soda fountain that specializes in phosphates, egg creams and fancy sundaes. Everything about Soda Jerks harkens back to the original carousel era, from the candy display case to the antique malt dispenser—even the uniforms the Soda Jerks wear are historically accurate! Kids will flip for the hot fudge sundaes, while coffee-loving adults will swoon over the Graveyard Shake (half-cappuccino, half-espresso, blended with chocolate syrup).

The trapeze school

Further down the pier is The Trapeze School New York's West Coast location, where anyone over the age of six can soar high in the air. Classes are available in flying trapeze, silks, static trapeze, trampoline and Lyra/Aeriel Hoop. No experience is required, meaning beginners are always welcome. Try an evening class, which promises amazing views of the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. Or, for those who prefer to keep both feet on the ground, the Trapeze School is visible from the pier and anyone can watch the staff and students fly through the air. (TSNY also offers a cool youth program during the summer.)

The amusement park

The Pier's Pacific Park is a full-scale amusement park that caters to the whole family. With ten adult rides and fifteen rides for kids, there's an option available for everyone. The crown jewels of the amusement park are the roller coaster and Ferris wheel; the "West Coaster" races along the perimeter of the park, while the Pacific Wheel is the world's only solar-powered Ferris Wheel. (Even the 160,000 light bulbs that shimmer on the wheel are energy efficient!) Even better, both rides offer breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Pacific Park also has more than a dozen carnival-style games that kids of all ages can enjoy. The park is free to enter, but you must pay for specific rides; click here for pirces.

Good food is abundant here. For walk-up dining, Pacific Park's food stands are the hands-down winners, serving up coffee, pizza, ice cream and no shortage of fried food. For sit-down options, there's a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. at the beginning of the pier, as well as Marisol Cocina Mexicana at the end. Both are family friendly and offer delicious food, though Marosil has the distinct privilege of being directly over the water—with the best views—on the western-most end of the pier.

The shopping

The Santa Monica Pier is not a place for designer duds! Down on the pier you'll find all the kitschy souvenirs you can imagine, such as key chains, novelty license plates, and T-shirts that announce to the world just how much you "heart" Santa Monica. During our time here, we fell in love with eclectic energy and fun quirkiness. Santa Monica is a famous beach town near Los Angeles. The beach is a lively place with bike trails, parks, and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. There's also the famous "Muscle Beach" which is an outdoor gym, and the amusement park on the iconic pier.

Beaches Santa Monica Beach is large and lined with bike trails. It's also filled with activity and you'll find many water sports, beach volleyball, and surfing in the area. There's also the famous Santa Monica Pier, which has an amusement park aquarium, Ferris wheal, dining, and shopping.

Food You'll find a diversity of restaurants in the area, many of which make use of the town's many farmer's markets. The restaurant scene has a beachy vibe with a lot of outdoor dining opportunities. There are also a range of cuisines to choose from such as Mexican, Italian, casual, and upscale.

Nightlife There's a relaxed and laid back vibe to the nightlife scene. Many venues offer outdoor seating and live music in a casual setting. You can hang out on a patio and enjoy the California climate while you sip cold drinks and the beach town atmosphere.

Shopping It's easy to pass the time shopping in Santa Monica. There are independent vendors, fashion boutiques, and art galleries. Head to Montana Avenue or Main Street for some of the best shopping.

Museums There's a thriving arts scene and a number of museums around town. Check out the Museum of Flying, the California Heritage Museum, or the Santa Monica History Museum.

How to Get to Santa Monica

Some charter airlines fly into Santa Monica Airport, but most visitors will probably use Los Angeles International (LAX) to get to Santa Monica. If you fly into the city's own airport, you can either use airport shuttles or rent a car to reach your accommodation. From LAX, the best option is to take the Big Blue Bus ($2.50) or LAX FlyAway bus ($8). You could also take a taxi, which costs between $30 and $35. The distance between LAX and Santa Monica is about 12 miles.

Santa Monica doesn't have a train station, but it's not far from LA's Union Station, which has excellent rail connections to San Diego, San Francisco, and cities like Chicago, St. Louis, and Phoenix. The Big Blue Bus Route 10 runs from Union Station to downtown Santa Monica.

Most drivers approach Santa Monica via I-10, which runs across the southern USA, linking the city with Florida. If you are coming from northern California, I-5 is the road to take (or Route 101 if you fancy taking the coastal route). I-5 also links Santa Monica with San Diego to the south.

If you want to take a bus to Santa Monica from cities outside LA, the best option is to take a Greyhound to downtown LA, then switch to a city bus to Santa Monica. Take buses 720 or 704 or the Big Blue Bus number 10 from the bus station straight to the Santa Monica seafront.

Excellent seafront hotels include the Viceroy Hotel, Casa Del Mar, and Shutters on the Beach, but expect to pay a little more for a sea view. Inland alternatives include the Georgian Hotel in the center of town and the comfortable, elegant Ambrose Hotel. The Wyndham Santa Monica at the Pier is great for families, while HI Los Angeles Santa Monica offers budget rooms and dorm beds within walking distance of the beach.
