Sturgill Simpson Doubles Dates on Fall Tour

Sturgill Simpson will remain on the road for the rest of year, thanks to a newly-added string of tour dates that extend the Metamodern Sounds in Country Music   singer’s concert calendar through Thanksgiving.  

The Living The Dream Tour is a well-deserved victory lap for Simpson, who, in the past year alone, has played everywhere from Bonnaroo  to Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July picnic , making stops at virtually every late-night TV program on both sides of the Atlantic along the way. He also earned a deal with Atlantic Records, thanks to the sales of the independently-released Metamodern Sounds in Country Music , which has moved nearly 120,000 copies during its first fourteen months. Although details about Metamodern ‘s follow-up are scarce, Simpson has already returned to the recording studio with producer Dave Cobb , who helmed his first two solo albums. 

Additions to the upcoming tour, which more than double his original schedule, include a two-night homecoming at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and back-to-back shows at the Lincoln Theatre in D.C., along with headlining shows in Vancouver, Denver, Seattle, Asheville, North Carolina, Portland, Oregon, and Los Angeles. Simpson, who announced the tour’s first round of dates  last month, will also make two appearances at the Austin City Limits Festival in October. 

Boosted by the psychedelic stomp of drummer Miles Miller, bassist Kevin Black and Americana Awards-nominated  guitarist Laur Joamets, Simpson’s live shows have expanded his audience far beyond the world of country music, roping in everyone from Deadheads to bluegrass fans. He’s been compared to the pioneers of outlaw country — particularly Waylon Jennings, whose son, Shooter Jennings, played a big role in connecting Simpson with Dave Cobb — and hailed as the unlikely savior of a genre that’s grown too far past its roots. To his credit, Simpson has shrugged off that title.

Where has Whitey Morgan been? He’s still been out on the road quite a bit, but instead of logging 280 days a year on the road like he did in his younger days, he’s spending a bit more time now perfecting his BBQ game and tending the homestead in Northern California. But fans of the staunch country music Outlaw will have ample opportunities to see him in 2024 as Whitey and the 78’s will be hitting the road hard and heavy this spring and summer, including opening some big shows for close friends Cody Jinks, Jamey Johnson, and Whiskey Myers. Whitey also has plenty of headliner shows of his own, and a few extra special events. Last week, Whitey announced that he will officially be making his Grand Ole Opry debut. Though Opry debuts are a little easier to come by these days thanks to the management of Dan Rogers, it feels like an especially validating moment for Whitey Morgan who has paid more dues than most, and always kept the Outlaw and independent spirit throughout his career. “Very honored to have been asked to make my Opry Debut on May 17,” Whitey Morgan says. “It’s arguably the most important stage in country music, so grab a ticket and make it a little rowdy with me.” Well before guys like Cody Jinks and Whiskey Myers were minting Gold and Platinum albums, Whitey Morgan was one of the original underground country artists, picking up the mantle from the oldtimers like Billy Joe Shaver and Billy Don Burns, and bringing the music to a new generation. What a lot of folks want to know is when new music might be coming from the Flint, Michigan native. Whitey has never been prolific in his recorded output, but has been posting photos of himself in the studio lately, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, get out and see a show if you can.

I have waited and waited for this. Of all “alt-country” artists, whitey morgan & the 78s is my favorite act. In my opinion; while others leans into americana, western, folk & bluegrass, whitey is firmly rooted in that honky tonk sound crafted by george jones and waylon jennings. Hopefully there’s also a new album on the way as well.

Yeah he’s probably my favorite too… Just wish he put albums out on a consistent basis. Once every five years ain’t cutting it with me. I’m glad he’s performing bigger venues but I’ll always prefer the smaller ones when seeing artists.

Sad that I am the first to comment on an article about him that came out yesterday. His live shows are rad – especially if it is a smaller venue. He is so far from affected in my opinion. Legit country!!!

Whitey shows are some of the best ones out there!

I had no idea who Whitey was but decided on a whim to go see him at the Hard Rock in Vegas a few years. I was NOT disappointed. Truly excellent! Glad to see him getting more attention. I agree with Trigger: go see him if you get the chance!

he’s one of my favorites. I remember in 2020 there wasn’t anything going on and Whitey youtubed himself and sang a bunch of songs. It made my heart happy.

Whitey is for the win

I have seen him and the band four times in Mobile, Al. We met him too. He is a really cool guy. We begged him to play Goodbye Dixie that night which was not in his set list at that time. He said he could not play it that night because he had played it in so long. They played it everytime since then which is cool to me. Glad to them getting Opry debut. I hope we get some new music soon too.

I saw Whitey and Jinks were going to be playing near me. I went to check out tickets and realized the cheapest ones were nearly $300 each. Man, I would love to see these guys again, but I think they have officially left my price range. Guess the days of catching Whitey at the Ranch or at a small venue for less than $50 is over.

Congrats to these guys though. I’ll be moving on to the next big band yet to happen in a venue I can afford. Or maybe I’ll see them again a few years on the downside.

Those sound like resale prices, so either the show is sold out, or you need to make sure you’re buying direct.

They are actual prices from the Charlotte show. There are some cheaper back in the grass area, but if you want a seat they start around $280.

I’m not complaining really, though ticket prices in general are outta hand. I’ve seen both. I’m just getting to the age i guess where spending close to $600 dollars plus travel for my wife and I to see a concert isn’t worth it anymore. Mama isn’t sitting in the grass either, and I just don’t like the large crowds anymore. Small venues are not just more affordable, but quite a bit more enjoyable for me.

Happy for their success though.

Still need to catch a show of his. Been one of my favorites for a long time. Saw he was in Wichita recently but found out to late to get off and get tickets.
