About Mark…

“This is a great country and I have a great job – showing off New Zealand to people who appreciate it as much as I do. I get a real buzz out of making each tour an exceptional experience for each guest.”

Mark established Awesome Tours, after recognising that people valued having a personal, well-informed local guide, who could safely drive them around and – if they wanted – put together a tailor-made tour.

With his own extensive travel experiences behind him, Mark understands what is required in a guide – that some people want time to explore on their own, while others are looking for a fully-guided package.

Awesome is an appropriate name for the tour. Best day we had in New Zealand, we loved the Natures Wonders and Albatross Center. We enjoyed the smaller tour group than the cruise ship offered and you were the perfect tour guide. Great to be able to hear everything you said from the back of the […]

Thank you Mark for showing us the beauty of the South Island! What a trip. We visited and toured the area of Queenstown and Dunedin, as well as visiting the stunning and unspoiled Otago Peninsula. Key call outs would be the steam boat trip on Lake Wakatipu, a visit to nearby Arrowtown, exploring Dunedin city, […]

My family and extended family recently spent the day with Mark touring Natures Wonders and the Albatross colony. We all had a fantastic day, it was truly one of the highlights of our cruise. Marks knowledge and his overall service to us was great, Mark went the extra mile showing us other highlights of this […]

Our tour around Dunedin and the Otago peninsula was fantastic!!!! The peninsula itself is totally unspoilt and beautiful. The Nature’s Wonders tour was breathtaking and the inquisitive seal colonies are stunning. Mark is a well of knowledge about his home town, Dunedin and delighted us with many stories during our tour. We were given the […]

A lifetime experience! I had not booked this tour prior to my trip but our tour guide highly recommended Mark. I was not disappointed. His love for what he does and his country was contagious. This tour turned a dreary day into a fun bright sunny one. Since the day was gray (to say the […]

Well worth the 2 hours

Great 2 hour tour of Dunedin sights with a very informative guide. Plenty of photo opportunities and a wealth of historical facts imparted with lovely NZ humour.

Under the Sunshine Travel Club banner we went from Dunedin (picked up from home!) to Palmerston (via the scenic routes!) for lunch then on to Macraes to view the massive goldmining operation there. Time for drinks at Stanley's hotel, then back home. NZ$45 the lot! The coach was huge, and comfortable - while the driver (Richard, see photo) was superb. At no time were we hurried along, but everything still got done in a most relaxed way. His occasional tidbits of information about the route were always very interesting - even though I've lived here all my life he seemed able to come up with fascinating "little-known" facts! He was very helpful to disabled passengers too, ensuring everyone was comfortable. Organisation was great, and I'm sure everyone thoroughly enjoyed their day out. Highly recommended for all those who don't get out much. :-)

Did the two hour tour, and found it very informative and enjoyable - probably a must for anyone travelling without a car and for the first time in the region. You get to see the main city sights and a bit of the coastline, which is spectacular.

We were delighted the tour, the driver was amazing and the cometary was great especially the mix of history and the present. We did the 2 hour tour and we saw all over the City. This worked well for us to see and hear as much as possible about Dunedin. Loved it :-)

As we had limited time, we wanted an overview of Dunedin so decided to do the 2 hour Good Company Tour. Richard picked us up from the motel, then it was off to the I-Site to pick up the remaining customers. The first hour covered the inner city highlights and then the second hour took us away from the city centre. Not only was it a great way to get around, the narration from Richard was very interesting - he has excellent historical knowledge. Highly recommend this tour.

We were going on a Cruise and I had pre-booked the Taieri Gorge Train/City Sights Tour before leaving Australia. I must admit I was a little apprehensive about it but WOW I was wrong... the Good Company were professional and fantastic!! They were waiting for us as we disembarked and drove us to the train station. We boarded the train and the trip was brilliant, took lots of photos & thoroughly enjoyed it. Josh then met us after we got off the train and we went on our City tour. It was a lovely drive, looking at all the sights and Josh was full of knowledge about the area. He drove us back to the Ship with plenty of time to spare. Overall, I would highly recommend this Tour Company and this Tour. It was a lot cheaper than booking through the Cruise Ship Excursions and I guarantee you'll have a better time, knowing you haven't had to mortgage your house for the tour!! Well done Good Company Tours :)

Adventure Time With Tourworks NZ!

"Our tour manager, Russell, was the best. He was very friendly, knowledgeable, and humble. The tour gave us the best of Otago Peninsula's natural scenic beauty and exotic flora and fauna, breathtaking views of the Pacific with a large number of seals, and also glimpses of the famous and rare Yellow-Eyed Penguin. We also did the city tour comprising of the old railway station, palace, world's steepest street, and etc."

"We booked this tour as our stop on a cruise ship. When the cruise ship changed the arrival time, Tourworks NZ reached out and adjusted our tour time to fit our itinerary. Russ picked us up in a van and we had a wonderful afternoon exploring all the highlights of Dunedin. We didn’t feel rushed and felt we made the most of our time in port. My favorite part was the trip off the beaten path to see the seals on the beach."

"Russ met us in the port terminal and we were quickly off ahead of schedule. The small bus meant we were able to access spots that larger buses couldn’t. We got great views with photo stops and history told along the way. A stop at Larnach Castle provided opportunity for coffee/lunch. The highlight for us had to be a visit to a beach off the beaten track to see the sea lions basking on the sand. A special end to a great day."

"This tour was absolutely fabulous! Our group was led by Russ, a very experienced, knowledgeable, articulate, humorous, and just an all around nice guy. We toured around Dunedin, NZ visiting great viewpoints for pictures, stopping off at Lanarch Castle for lunch and a walk about the place, a penguin reserve, and an albatross viewpoint. All in all it was such a terrific day which I would highly recommend."

There is much to do and see in Dunedin. Drive the winding road of the Otago Peninsula through Macandrew Bay, a quaint harbour front coastal settlement, ten kilometres from town. Continue to the point of the Peninsula where the blue ocean and white sands meet, to discover yellow eyed penguin settlements, fur seals, sea lions and the elusive Albatross, with the only mainland breeding colony in the world.

Larnach Castle

Surrounded by water and farmland, Dunedin has access to some of the country’s best and freshest seafood, meat and vegetables. Not far from New Zealand’s oyster country, on the south coast, bluff oysters are just perfect around April. Whitebait is a comfort food favourite, dipped in batter and fried pancake style - found in any fish and chip shop. Dining is mostly casual in Dunedin with a handful of fine dining options.

Bacchus Wine Bar and Restaurant

University towns rely on coffee to keep the students going. Combine this with an arty scene that relies on coffee to keep inspiration flowing and you get a Mecca for coffee lovers. Dunedin is no exception, with quirky unique cafes serving exquisite coffee beans. Most of Dunedin’s cafe society is found around the Octagon area, in the University George Street vicinity and in the swanky suburbs of St Clair, Roslyn and Highgate.

Nova Cafe

Bars & Nightlife

It is important to get your days right in Dunedin. Like any other place in the world, the locals dictate the buzz: a pub may be humming on a Thursday, but never on a Monday, a bar may be the place to go on a Wednesday, but not to be seen at on a Saturday. Talk to locals, especially students, they will know where to go and when. Time it right and you will be swept up in an intelligent bar scene worthy of any underground city. Dunedin specialises in intimate cocktail bars where conversations abound or rowdy pubs with live music. There is something for all drinking palates and pleasures, so pull up a stool.

Octagon

ID Fashion Week has put Dunedin on New Zealand’s fashion map. This one-week festival dedicated to fashion is held annually, in the end of February, when local designers make good on the international circuit. Tanya Carlson, Tamsin Cooper and Nom D strut their stuff alongside emerging designers.

Explore the Rugged Coast and Sweeping Panoramas

The amazing beaches of Dunedin are a must-see and will have you kicking off your shoes and dipping your toes into the perfect white sand and crisp waters. Thirteen million years ago, the coastline here convulsed with volcanic activity, and our small-group guided tour of Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula reveals this rugged coastline, stunning scenery and rare wildlife. This 75-mile scenic journey takes you to the best vantage points of the Otago Peninsula and back down to the bays and beaches that surround Dunedin.

  • Chevron down Itinerary

Signal Hill Lookout & City Highlights Signal Hill Lookout is our starting point for your half-day shore excursion of Dunedin. Before starting our 60-mile scenic journey, enjoy this vantage point of a landscape scattered with rock domes and vents now covered with pasture and forest.

Before hitting the coastal road, we admire the historical architecture of Dunedin, the oldest city in New Zealand. This city boasts the largest collection of Edwardian and Victorian structures, and we also visit Baldwin Street, the ‘steepest street in the world’, and the historic Dunedin Railway Station.

For another great vista before heading out the Peninsula, we head to Smails Beach with a lookout point where the southern rollers, surfers and stunning rock formations can be seen.

Otago Peninsula & Portobello Winding along the coastal road, the journey continues out onto the Otago Peninsula, where you learn about the volcanic origin of Dunedin before exploring the remote southern parts of the headland.

For all you photographers out there, you’ll want your camera handy because this stretch of coast is what postcards are made of, and we make a quick stop to capture the unique, rare and always spectacular flora and fauna.

We rejoin the high road for stunning harbour views before descending into the tidal inlets, passing early drystone dyke walls and limekilns as we go.

Heading toward Portobello, the main township on the Otago Peninsula, we visit the Tidal Inlets — a birdwatcher’s paradise, though all will appreciate the history and important ecosystem. The scenic inlets are where kingfishers, herons and many other waders and waterfowl can be seen. However, it’s often the things you can’t see that have the greatest influence on this ecosystem’s function.

Wildlife Reserve and Sandy Beaches We’re reaching our furthest point on this coastal exploration! We visit a wildlife reserve, where after a short walk, we spend 20 – 30 minutes looking for the rarest sea lion in the world — the NZ sea lion.

From here, we admire one of the Otago Peninsula’s most stunning beaches. Go for it — take off your shoes and feel the sand between your toes! On and offshore, amazing basalt rock formations can be seen up close, making for incredible photographs.

Wipe off that sand and snap another photo along the beach before we hit the low road back to Port Chalmers.

Perfect Itinerary for One Day in Dunedin

honeymoon island in dunedin

One Day in Dunedin: Discover the hidden gems of this Florida Gulf Coast town through a local’s eyes. From craft breweries and unique eateries to stunning natural parks and sunset spots, this one day itinerary covers it all.

Dunedin might not be as famous as Miami or Orlando, but as a local, I can tell you it’s got its own unique charm that’s worth exploring. Think craft breweries, artsy vibes, and some of the best natural spots in the Sunshine State . I knew I had to share my go-to places, from the breakfast spots that kickstart my day to the hidden spots perfect for a sunset view.

What’s in Store for You

So, what’s on the menu for our day in Dunedin? How about we kick things off with a breakfast spot that’ll make you forget all about those big coffee chains? 😉 Then we’ll hit up some of my favorite local eateries, explore the great outdoors, and wrap up the day with a sunset that’ll make your Instagram feed jealous. Trust me, this itinerary is all about experiencing Dunedin like a local.

Before You Go I usually enjoy Dunedin’s weather year-round, but if you’re looking to dodge the Florida humidity, aim for November through April. That’s when the weather is at its best—sunny skies and cooler temps.

Keep in mind that winter months are peak tourist season here, so you might run into crowds, especially at popular spots like Honeymoon Island. If you’re looking for hotel deals, you might have better luck in the shoulder seasons.

Where to Stay in Dunedin 👉 I can’t say enough good things about the Fenway Hotel . It’s about a 10-minute walk from Main Street, and the rooms are super comfy. Plus, you can’t beat the rooftop bar for sunset views.

Plus, If you’re planning to explore Main Street and downtown, I’d recommend staying nearby. It makes getting around so much easier, especially if you’re planning to enjoy some craft beers.

A few other hotel options:

  • Budget : Hampton Inn Dunedin
  • Mid-Range : Best Western Plus Yacht Harbor Inn
  • Luxury : Beso Del Sol Resort

  • Vibe : The atmosphere is laid-back yet lively, making it the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely afternoon stroll.

Outdoor Adventure If art isn’t your thing, how about some water sports at Dunedin Marina ?

  • Equipment Needed : Rentals for kayaks and paddleboards are available.
  • Safety Tips : Life jackets are provided and are a must.
