Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour Onsale Explained

ticketmaster statement logo

W e strive to make ticket buying as easy as possible for fans, but that hasn’t been the case for many people trying to buy tickets for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour. First, we want to apologize to Taylor and all of her fans – especially those who had a terrible experience trying to purchase tickets. Next, we feel we owe it to everyone to share some information to help explain what happened:

We Knew a Record Number Of Fans Wanted Tickets to Taylor’s Tour

  • By requiring registrations, Verified Fan is designed to help manage high demand shows – identifying real humans and weeding out bots. Keeping bots out of queues and avoiding overcrowding helps to make wait times shorter and onsales smoother.
  • Based on fan interest at registration we knew this would be big. Over 3.5 million people pre-registered for TaylorSwiftTix Presale powered by Verified Fan, which is the largest registration in history.
  • Historically, around 40% of invited fans actually show up and buy tickets, and most purchase an average of 3 tickets. Around 1.5 million people were sent codes to join the onsale for all 52 show dates, including the 47 sold by Ticketmaster.
  • The remaining 2 million Verified Fans were placed on a waiting list on the small chance that tickets might still be available after those who received codes had shopped.

The Demand for Tickets to Taylor’s Tour Broke Records – & Parts Of Our Website

  • Historically, we’ve been able to manage huge volume coming into the site to shop for tickets, so those with Verified Fan codes have a smooth shopping process. However, this time the staggering number of bot attacks as well as fans who didn’t have codes drove unprecedented traffic on our site, resulting in 3.5 billion total system requests – 4x our previous peak.
  • We handle onsales for countless top tours, some of the biggest sporting events, and more.  Never before has a Verified Fan onsale sparked so much attention – or traffic. This disrupted the predictability and reliability that is the hallmark of our Verified Fan platform. Here’s a look at how that traffic compared to every other day on our site this year:

Taylor swift the eras tour average traffic map

  • It usually takes us about an hour to sell through a stadium show, but we slowed down some sales and pushed back others to stabilize the systems. The trade off was longer wait times in queue for some fans.
  • Overall, we estimate about 15% of interactions across the site experienced issues, and that’s 15% too many, including passcode validation errors that caused fans to lose tickets they had carted.

Despite the Disruptions a New Sales Records Was Set

  • Over 2 million tickets were sold on Ticketmaster for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour on Nov. 15 – the most tickets ever sold for an artist in a single day.
  • All 2 million tickets for the Verified Fan onsale were sold to Verified Fans. Only ticket buyers who were verified were permitted to enter a queue. Verification is tied to a user’s account and validated at login, which is why users only had to login to enter the queue. For additional security, ticket buyers also had to enter their unique code to complete their purchase. No one who wasn’t verified was allowed to enter the queue, but the huge traffic hitting the site overall meant we had to slow down queues to keep them stable.
  • 2.4 million tickets have been sold for the tour overall across onsales for Verified Fans and Capital One cardholders, on both Ticketmaster and SeatGeek.
  • Less than 5% of the tickets for the tour have been sold or posted for resale on the secondary market. Onsales that don’t use Verified Fan typically see 20-30% of inventory end up on secondary markets.

The biggest venues and artists turn to us because we have the leading ticketing technology in the world – that doesn’t mean it’s perfect, and clearly for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour onsale it wasn’t. But we’re always working to improve the ticket buying experience. Especially for high demand onsales, which continue to test new limits.

We’re working to shore up our tech for the new bar that has been set by demand for the Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour. Once we get through that, if there are any next steps, updates will be shared accordingly.

Even when a high demand onsale goes flawlessly from a tech perspective, many fans are left empty handed. For example: based on the volume of traffic to our site, Taylor would need to perform over 900 stadium shows (almost 20x the number of shows she is doing)…that’s a stadium show every single night for the next 2.5 years. While it’s impossible for everyone to get tickets to these shows, we know we can do more to improve the experience and that’s what we’re focused on.

Ticketmaster Announces Major Rule Change for Taylor Swift Eras Tour Ticket Holders

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

If you're planning to shake it off at Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour later this summer, Ticketmaster have just updated their ticket rules. Here's what you need to know.

After months of watching The Eras Tour unfold on TikTok (and, y'know, via her stadium concert tour that we can't stop watching), it's coming to the UK. The European leg of TayTay's tour will kick off on May 9, 2024 in Paris and wrap up on August 20, 2024 in London, and Ticketmaster just announced a change to the way they're organizing the event.

Previously, their terms and conditions stated that the 'lead booker' must be present at the event, meaning the cardholder who paid for the tickets had to attend in person. Obviously, this was a concern for anyone who had been bought the tickets as gifts, or younger fans whose parents had purchased the tickets on their behalf.

Anonymous sources, tortured man clubs, cheating rumors—it's all just a lot.

Fans were left confused over whether the 'lead booker' had to be present at the actual gig, or attend at the gates where people were showing their tickets.

Do you panic every time you get an eras tour related email from ticketmaster or are you normal?? pic.twitter.com/llPGD7xzGk — aims ⸆⸉ 🦋 IS SEEING TAYLOR SWIFT (@shimmeringtay13) April 2, 2024

Thankfully, though, in an email shared this week [April 4], Ticketmaster updated their T&Cs, sharing a new policy. In an email to ticket holders, they wrote: "The 'lead booker' policy has been removed, meaning that the person whose name is on the Ticketmaster account used to purchase tickets is no longer required to attend the event.

"All other terms and conditions remain unchanged. We hope you enjoy the show!"

While this is great news for many fans, others joked it was stressful receiving an email from Ticketmaster with 'The Eras Tour' in the subject line. Don't panic us like that!

I paid a stranger on Facebook $1,545 for tickets to Taylor Swift's 'Eras Tour.' Here's how I avoided getting scammed.

  • Joni Sweet never got access to Ticketmaster's presale for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour.
  • She bought tickets from Facebook because sites like StubHub were selling tickets for thousands — way outside of Sweet's budget.
  • Sweet insisted on using Paypal Goods and Services to protect herself during the risky transaction.

Insider Today

In January, I did something I  never thought I would do: I paid a stranger I met on Facebook $1,545.10 for tickets to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour.

It was a risky move. I had heard reports of other people getting scammed out of more than a thousand dollars after they tried to buy tickets from resellers, so I was nervous.

But like many Swifties, I never got access to Ticketmaster's disastrous presale for the Eras Tour . And the mark-up on tickets from official resale sites like Stubhub gave me serious sticker shock, so I turned to social media to find a seller.

Luckily for me, it worked out—but making sure the seller and the tickets were legitimate required hours of detective work.

I posted on a Taylor Swift ticket-selling Facebook group

My search for Taylor Swift tickets started on Twitter. I had come across @ErasTourResell , an account which connects hopeful concertgoers with people selling their Eras Tour tickets for face value.

The competition for those tickets is fierce. After I didn't hear back from several sellers I had contacted, I turned to Facebook. I searched for terms like "Taylor Swift resell" and "Eras Tour tickets" and joined a few groups that came up.

Then, I posted that I was in search of tickets for Taylor Swift shows in PA, NJ, and MA (all driving distance from my home in NY), as well as a few venues I was willing to travel to,  and hoped for the best.

A potential seller messaged me, so I went through his social media history

Later that day, I received a Facebook message from someone asking if I was still looking for Eras Tour tickets. He told me he was selling a pair of floor tickets for the concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on May 20.

He sent me a screenshot of his Ticketmaster purchase confirmation and the stadium seating map that included the section, row, and the four seats he had purchased, mentioning that he was only selling two of the tickets.

After finding out he wanted $750 each (more than I've ever spent to go to a concert, but about half as much as similar tickets were going for at the time), I decided to suss him out.

I started by doing a deep dive into his Facebook history. A lot of scammers have relatively new accounts with little to no history of activity, so it was reassuring to see that this seller had public posts dating back to 2013.

Over the years, he had shared photos of his family, links to petitions for issues he cared about, posts wishing everyone a happy new year, fan art of his favorite celebrities, and several photoshopped images of his face on Taylor Swift album covers.

Clearly he was a fan, and more importantly, it didn't seem like his account was set up just to sell tickets, which made me feel more comfortable moving forward.

I insisted on using PayPal Goods and Services

If this transaction didn't go as planned, I wanted some protection to get my money back. Hence why it's smart to use PayPal Goods and Services. It promises to help buyers get a refund if the concert tickets they've paid for never show up. PayPal charges 2.99% of the transaction amount for this service (so, in this case, $44.85, although I miscalculated and sent the seller $44.10 in fees, and the seller was fine with that).

Related stories

I felt the fee was well worth the protection it offered — at the very least, I would have a means to get a refund if he tried to scam me.

I asked for screen recordings of his Ticketmaster account

Another way to determine if a seller is legit is by requesting a screen recording (rather than a screenshot, which is easier to fake) of them going through their Ticketmaster account and showing their tickets.

Before I even asked, my seller sent me a screen recording he took a few days prior. That was helpful, but I wanted something more current, so I asked him to take new recordings that showed today's date, our Facebook conversation, and the Eras Tour tickets in his Ticketmaster account. A few minutes later, he sent me exactly what I asked for.

I watched it over and over again looking for signs it had been faked. I paid attention to the battery level on the phone, the time displayed, and our recorded conversation to see if it looked like he had messed with it.

I also compared it to other screen recordings buyers had posted in Facebook ticket reselling groups to see if it contained any signs of fraud. It all checked out.

I asked why he was selling the tickets

What finally boosted my confidence to the level where I could feel comfortable paying a stranger more than $1,500 for Taylor Swift tickets was his response when I asked: "Why are you selling?"

He said he "panic-bought during the sale," and that a Ticketmaster glitch would only let him buy four tickets, rather than just the two he wanted, during the presale. That lined up with the presale problems I heard about.

He admitted that the pair he wanted to sell was probably worth more than $750, but that "Taylor would not approve" of overcharging.

We then got into a conversation about when we became Swifties and our favorite Taylor Swift albums. It felt like I was talking to a friend.

We agreed to make the transaction later that evening.

I paid for one ticket at a time

After exchanging the email addresses connected with our PayPal and Ticketmaster accounts, it was go time. I sent him $1 as a test, and he confirmed he received it.

We then decided to do the transaction one ticket at a time to help reduce the risk we both were taking. I sent him $772.05 for the ticket and PayPal fee, along with a screenshot for proof. He then sent me a screenshot of my info in his Ticketmaster ticket transfer page to confirm he had the correct details. I approved, then waited to receive the first ticket as my heart raced.

Within one minute, Ticketmaster emailed me to let me know my ticket transfer for the Eras Tour was ready for me. I tapped the "accept tickets" button and the ticket officially hit my account.  Phew!

We repeated the process again for the second ticket without a hitch, and I was glad the stressful experience was over.

I made sure the tickets were transferred to my Ticketmaster account

Both tickets appeared in my Ticketmaster account after I accepted the transfer for each one. I can see that they're authentic because they have a special bar code that changes every few seconds, with a note that screenshots won't get me in.

Even though Ticketmaster doesn't allow you to cancel a transfer after someone has accepted your tickets, I check to see that they're still in my Ticketmaster app every few days… just in case.

Would I buy concert tickets from a stranger online again?

Buying these tickets caused me a lot of anxiety, so I'd prefer to buy them directly from Ticketmaster in the future. Since that wasn't an option for me this time, and the scalpers on reseller sites are charging a ton of money for Eras Tour tickets, I'm glad I bought from a stranger I met on Facebook, instead.

The original receipt for these tickets showed they cost about $600 each, so I only paid about $150 more than face value.

Since face value tickets sold out so quickly during the presale, I knew I'd probably need to spend more than they initially cost—and I really wanted to go to the Eras Tour. Plus, tickets for seats in a similar section for this show are going for more than $2,500 a pop on Stubhub right now. That's way outside of my budget. The extra $150 felt very reasonable by comparison.

Even though the transaction required a lot of careful vetting and taking a big risk, it worked out.

'Taylor Swift' bills would crack down on bot ticket purchases, inflated resale prices

transfer eras tour tickets ticketmaster

Lansing — Michigan lawmakers on Wednesday introduced bills to crack down on the use of automated software programs snarling concert ticket sales and driving up prices for big name performers.

The legislation is similar to the so-called “Taylor Swift” laws recently passed in Arizona after tickets were gobbled up for Swift's Eras concert tour by automated bots that later resold the tickets for higher prices.

While there are laws at the federal level preventing the practice, they are rarely enforced, said GOP state Rep. Graham Filler, who sponsored the legislation with Rep. Mike McFall, D-Hazel Park.

“I’m trying to make Michigan a really unattractive state for these bots to do business,” Filler said. “It’s unfair to people, it’s anti-competitive, anti-capitalist, it’s anti-consumer.”

It's not clear that Michigan concerts have been plagued by the same problems seen in Arizona, but Filler and McFall said they want to take a proactive approach to prevent against a similar event.

The Event Online Ticket Sales Act would prohibit an automated software application from creating multiple IP addresses, email addresses or accounts to buy up tickets for an event that exceed the posted ticket limit. The entertainment events protected by the act include theater performances, concerts, exhibitions or sporting events that are open to the public.

The legislation also would prevent individuals from using software to disable a ticket seller's security measure or circumvent a waiting period, electronic queue or other sales volume limitation programs.

Violations of the act would be investigated by the attorney general and would be punishable by a civil fine of up to $5,000 per ticket. The attorney general also could seek to recover restitution.

“Michiganders are tired of these scalping bots who purchase and hoard tickets for resale, often pricing them out of reach for many hardworking families,” McFall said in a statement Wednesday.

The introduction of the legislation comes more than three years after the Michigan Legislature voted to repeal a 1931 ban on ticket scalping.

The 2020 law — passed after roughly six years of debate — repealed a state ban that was rarely enforced and left the door open to bad actor ticket scalpers who never had a ticket in the first place.

The repeal allowed individuals and businesses to scalp tickets so long as the businesses’ names and websites did not resemble the venue or event for which the tickets are sold. Ticket sellers, under the 2020 law, must have the ticket in their possession at the time of sale or inform the purchaser if he or she does not have the ticket 48 hours ahead of the event.

The legislation at that time prohibited the practice of using “ticketing bot” software, making it subject to a 93-day misdemeanor and/or $1,000 fine.

The legislation introduced Wednesday differs because it allows the attorney general to bring a civil action, not a criminal one, with a higher fine of $5,000 per ticket.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Legislation prompted by ticket problems with Taylor Swift’s 2022 “Eras” tour is headed to the desk of Gov. Tim Walz after the Minnesota Senate passed it Monday on a vote of 35-29.

Mendota Heights Democrat Matt Klein’s bill requires ticket sellers disclose total cost, including fees, throughout the purchase process.

Resellers and on-line marketplaces would not be allowed to sell more than one copy of a ticket, nor could they sell tickets before they’re available to be sold. The legislation also has new guards to reduce the impact of bots.

Klein says the legislation will protect Minnesota consumers and ensure a fairer system for everyone.
