1 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Dodge Journey

My car stalled on me while driving. The first time (2014) it happened I was making a turn on a city street. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong with it while under warranty. It just stalled while driving last week for a second time. I was waiting on a light on a city street. My car was completely dead I couldn't put the hazard lights on. I was in the middle of a school zone. I tried starting it and nothing. Two gentlemen had to push my car out of traffic. This is very unsafe, imagine had I been on the highway someone would of hit from me behind as I had no power at all. There was no way of warning the cars behind me as I had no power. I replaced the battery in 1/2021 and alternator in 3/2021. I have seen many complaints on the Dodge forum website I believe something has to be done for safety issues. Also my bluetooth system is not working that is also a safety issue. I did complain to Dodge and they couldn't do anything about it. I have seen a lot of complaints on the Dodge forum website. My Dodge Journey is currently at a shop under diagnostics. It makes it unsafe for me to want to drive it at this point. See all problems of the 2013 Dodge Journey 🔎 .

2 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2018 Dodge Journey

My vehicle has 27400 miles and purchased April 4th 2018. My car battery light came on while driving. Took to dealership where I bought it. They replaced my battery and told me I didn't need a rental car. I went back to work 15 minutes away. Got off in 5 hours after replacement picked up my infant drove home which is 20 minutes away. As I was driving 15 minutes into my ride my lights start going crazy and the alternator light comes on and the car dies on the side of the road. How does this happen on a brand new car?. 3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Dodge Journey

The 2012 Dodge Journey SUV wiring harness in the rear hatch if used regularly the wires will brake and cause numerous electrical issues. Ranging from no rear lights, windshield wiper, the rear lock button will also malfunction. Sometimes as in my case it has cause alternator issues. I am now broke down due to what will now be my 3rd alternator in the last 6 months. I feel this vehicle needs to recalled. See all problems of the 2012 Dodge Journey 🔎 .

4 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2014 Dodge Journey

Despite a brand new battery and good alternator, the battery keeps draining over night or during the day, leaving me stranded at least 10 times since February 2020. Issue has occurred in multiple settings, including at work in a parking garage, in retail parking lots, and at home in my driveway. I replaced the battery as well as a faulty connector, as well as had the alternator assessed by my mechanic. Yet something is draining my brand new battery no matter how frequently the car is driven. It has only 70,000ish miles on it and has been maintained regularly. Since this is a push button ignition which controls other vehicle systems as well, if the electrical system doesn't recognize the fob or it's proximity, then door locks also aren't recognized or functional. During one call to/visit from aaa, the car started when jump started. The aaa rep opted to let it run on the charger for a few minutes. The car died while connected to the charger. This was after a brand new battery was installed. See all problems of the 2014 Dodge Journey 🔎 .

5 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

Vehicle keeps randomly stalling while driving. Vehicle will shut off and I have to turn the ignition off completely then let it sit to restart. Sometimes I have to put vehicle in neutral to get it to start. Had battery, fuel, spark plugs, alternator checked and they are working fine. Random lights keep flickering on the dash. This must be an electrical issue. Please issue a recall!!!! several other owners with the same make and model have complained about the exact same issue. 6 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Dodge Journey

When I look at the message boards for this Dodge make of car there are endless mentions of this problem and something needs to be done about people endlessly spending money to fix a. Problem that Dodge knows is causing these problems. Just bought my son this car and 3 days later the car will not start in the morning. Setting in the driveway at home. Was able to jump the vehicle to get it started only it to not start again when returning from work 6 hours later parked in a parking garage. Drove out there had to jump vehicle again. Bought new battery and replaced car did the same thing 8 hours later, used battery checked good as well as the alternator. Got online and found all of these suggestions to override a safety feature in the car that seemed to work for a lot of people but did not work for us. Please look at all the online complaints for this situation and make Dodge fix this problem, I travel extensively and my wife is sick with cancer and I'm not there nor is she able to help with getting this fixed every 8 hours to 3 days depending on how long it lasts. 7 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

I bought my 2010 Dodge Journey used. Shortly after buying it I noticed the horn and alarm system would randomly go off on its own while driving down the road, stationary at a stop or while the car was parked and turned off. I, unfortunately, had to eliminate this problem by taking out the fuses for my horm and alarm system. This has caused some safety issues. I have also had another electrical issue that has cost me over a thousand dollars to try to figure out. My car battery would drain overnight. At first I thought it was a bad battery because it was about 2 years after I got my car. I replaced the battery and that helped for about 2 weeks. Then the battery started draining again and had to be jump started every day. I had it hooked up to a diagnostic machine where it was found that my alternator needed changed. Went ahead and did that and still had to jump my car every day. I did this for about 2 months straight not being able to figure out what was wrong. Finally did a little more research and found it could be the fuse box module. Bought one of those and put it in. Also had to buy a new battery due to having to jump start it over and over for 2 months. Costing around $900 for the both. This fixed the problem for a few months but then the battery started draining again. This time I took it to a mechanic. They ran tests and had my car for 4 days. They couldn't figure out for sure what was wrong but thought maybe it was in my instrument cluster. Would cost $600 for the part and $200 for installation. I decided to just pull my main electrical fuse everyday instead and continue on with my crap car. Come to find out 5 months later my friend did some research and found some other people having the exact same problem and it was the radio draining the battery. Sure enough we unhooked my radio completely and I haven't had an issue since!!.

8 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2018 Dodge Journey

SUV was making a loud whining sound took it in to be checked and was told the alternator was bad. Had it changed by dealership, I feel this should not have failed this soon when the SUV is less than 2 yrs old. Now the passengers side strut is gone bad.

9 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Dodge Journey

My cars battery light keeps coming on and then it starts going over the 4000 rpm point and not going more than 20mph and then dies. . . I've replaced alternator and battery both 4 times in 4 months and it keeps happening. See all problems of the 2011 Dodge Journey 🔎 .

10 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Dodge Journey

I was driving my car yesterday when the battery light came on and in the process of trying to get it back home everything in the car started shutting off and then the car started stalling while I was on the road I barely made it into a gas station before the car died and had it towed to triple a repair shop to have a diagnostics done on the car which has now been stated to me that its the alternator and ive only had the car 3 months bought it used but the battery went bad and now the alternator in less then 2 months of each other along with the actuator also clicking when the alternator went out. All of this happening in a short amount of time. When the car started dying all the electrical lights went off the brakes the abs the air bags everything and this was on a busy road during rush hour traffic. I barely got my car to a safe location and that was only because my husband was following behind me in his car. This problem made it extremely difficult to break at red lights and get my car moving thru the intersection to the gas station. And the car light was on about 15 minutes maybe before it finally stalled out the car.

11 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Dodge Journey

I have been having problems with the power windows. There is a clicking sound when attempting to roll the window down. It rolls down sometimes. After that's been going on for a few weeks, my car cut off. I received a jump through my insurance. Today, my car got jumped and cut off twice. The mechanic said it was the alternator. I went online and I found that other people have had the same issues with Dodge, Chrysler, and fiat. Each time my car didn't restart, it was after I parked and came back to it. Today, it's being towed.

12 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2009 Dodge Journey

First the light turn on of the air bag (movement). In other night when I turn on the alarm it's start to activate on panic mode then I turn off the alarm wait for a various minutes and activate again (off), but in less than a minute start to be in panic mode. In other day (movement), says that was an open door and the locks start to put it many times, any of the doors wasn't open (movement). In the same day at night it's start to turn on/turn off the inside lights, put the locks, and the message of a door it's was open (movement). The alarm was on panic mode twice and the light's was againg turn on/turn off (off). The batterie, every time that I try to turn on the vehicule I need a booster to charge it again. The mechanics says that the alternator and the batterie are in good conditions has the voltage that needs to be operating. I put a new batterie but the problem persist. And turn on the light of other thing on the panel. See all problems of the 2009 Dodge Journey 🔎 .

13 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Dodge Journey

Stationary at the time mechanic came, car had not been running right, hesitating while driving, and stalled in driveway. Battery not charging or holding a charge/ no start, no nothing sent to local mechanic - I have not had a running car for five weeks. Alternator shot, and charging system, requires complete re wire as of 8-13 / 3 burnt wires, mechanic called auto electric specialist, indicated complete charging system burnt up.

14 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Dodge Journey

For two years battery has been unable to hold charge, even when replaced new, engine riding rough to complete stop in road, no flashers etc. Alternator replaced complete electric harness burnt, all fixed still will not hold battery charge. No car for two months. Car stalled in road.

15 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Dodge Journey

Battery light came on diagnostic test was performed I was told to change the alternator which I did. An hour later the light came on again then I was told to replace the battery which I did. After an hour drive the light came on again I was told the battery sensor needed to be replaced. The next day the car died completely I had to get towed. I was told to get an alternator from mopar which I did. New battery another new alternator a new sensor now the check engine light is on.

16 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2014 Dodge Journey

My cruise control quit working and the traction control light came on and it wouldn't turn off. The doors started locking and unlocking by themselves. I went to church and stopped at food city afterwards. I started the vehicle and put it in reverse and I can smell something weird and it was like the brake was stuck and it was holding back. I proceeded because I was in traffic and needed to move. Acceleration was limited but I made it home which was less than a mile. When stopped there was smoke rolling out from under the front passenger side area and there was fluids running all over the ground. This was a very dangerous situation because I had my children in the car. There is a scrubbing and pecking noise but it sounds like it's coming from the rear end. I have had nothing but problems with this vehicle. Check engine light is on but it's been on. I've had it checked and shows nothing wrong and had it turned off and it continues to come on. Alternator has been replaced as well as new battery. It seems to have electrical issues with the doors locking and unlocking. So dangerous! affects steering and control of vehicle and could cause a fire and not be able to get out of the vehicle. After seeing all of the reviews and problems with these vehicles they all need to be recalled because none of them are safe because it's obvious that the dealerships don't even know how to fix them. If they attempt one issue there are even more issues that occur. The repairs are costly and this is happening way too often with too many Journeys. Then we are stuck with a lemon to pay for and no vehicle because of these costly repairs along with the dangers imposed. Please recall these dangerous and repair costly vehicles! they don't need to be on the roads. Problems started not long after purchase but they have escalated and have gotten more serious, dangerous, and costly.

17 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

The horn blows continuously out of no where. I have changed the battery on the vehicle after I had one completely dead. It wakes up neighbors in the middle of the night. My alternator is good and provides the correct amperage. It honks when started, sitting still and off and all the time. This has been going on for 6 months now.

18 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

My car is completely locking up. We were leaving for the day, I put my toddler in his car seat, got into the car and shut and locked the doors. I put the key in and started it, but nothing. Then none of the lights would work, the key was stuck in the ignition, and the doors would not unlock. I had to climb into the backseat and unlock the door by hand to get us out. We took the battery out and up to get tested, and it tested fine. After hooking the battery back up, we were able to get the car on. Next day same thing happened and I got stranded out and had to call for help. I have had the alternator replaced in 2016. After calling a shop to get it in to get it looked at, I was told that the ignition switch is a known issue in these cars and it sounded exactly how I was describing the problem. I was advised to check for a recall on my specific car, but there is not one. But after doing some research I did learn that Chrysler did issue a recall on 2009-2010 Dodge Journeys for this specific issue. Why was my car not recalled if it falls into that category?.

19 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

Takata recall draining battery. Had the fuse box replce help the train go from dead over night to last 1. 5 days before it die. Changed cluster. Been in two shops 2000$ worth of looking for the cause and its still unknown. It does drive if it starts no lights on. New battery alternator is ok surpertine belt and pully system is fine. . . Currently at l v auto on west mosel road in parchment mi.

20 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Dodge Journey

Tl the contact owns a 2015 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that the vehicle made an abnormal rattling sound while being operated. Also, the vehicle leaked oil, there was a hole in the transmission, and the check engine warning indicator and brake lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to sierra Chrysler Dodge (1305 mountain Ave, monrovia, CA 91016) where it was diagnosed that a new alternator was needed. The alternator was not repaired; however, the timing belt and oil leak were repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and offered to compensate the contact for the repairs. The failure mileage was 78,000.

21 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Dodge Journey

Myself and my 3 young children were driving down a pretty dark highway at about 10 pm. 3 hours from home. In a storm and very heavy rain. Vehicle suddenly lost power. When I gave it gas the engine just revved. Lost all power including windshield wipers and power steering I quickly dropped from 75 to 40 with semis barreling up behind me as I was trying to get to a shoulder to pull off on. Car died and would not restart. We were stuck on the side of the road for 5 hours with no heat and no power to the car. Even callled roadside and they tried to jump it. It would start but then go haywire again. Battery light and etc as well as all others lights come on. It has left me and my kids in the cold more than once. No one seems to know the problem as the battery and alternator are testing fine. Vehicle is now sitting in my drive way and won't do anything. At all.

22 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that she had two brand new batteries placed in her vehicle; however, they continued to drain. The contact stated that the usb outlet remained powered on and the cd player would activate while the vehicle was powered off. When the contact attempted to start the vehicle, it failed to start and made an unknown noise. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who jumpstarted the vehicle. Afterwards, the vehicle performed normally. The vehicle was later towed to o'daniel Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram (5611 illinois rd, fort wayne, in 46804, (844) 391-1759) due to the fuel gauge not providing the accurate reading. The technician performed diagnostic testing of the alternator and the battery, but could not find a failure code. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 59642545. The approximate failure mileage was 149,000.

23 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2009 Dodge Journey

Car does not start after being parked - sometimes when turned off for a short time (like getting gasoline), sometimes at the end of a work day or overnight. The car will sometimes start on its own after leaving it alone for more than a few hours. Car has been into shop several times and has had the following done: changed to new battery 2x, checked alternator, ran computer diagnostic. This has happened 4 times in the past years. The car "clicks" one time, power windows and radio still work. We are afraid this will keep happening.

24 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Dodge Journey

While in motion on 7/25/18 the vehicle stopped running, battery light came on, radio turned off, wipers started going on, and lights dimmed. Tried to restart and wouldn't showing battery light, abs light, symbol with lightning bolt, and said it could not detect key. Vehicle was towed and diagnosed with code p0622, and was told I needed an alternator. Replaced the alternator on 7/28/18. On 7/29/18, the car was running good, after about a half hour the battery light came on and the car slowly started to shut down while in motion with my wife and children in the car. I then replaced the battery. After driving 2 miles the battery light came on, the engine started to rev high and go low, other dash lights came on, the a/c turned hot and the car started to come to a crawl.

25 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

Horn randomly honks (while in motion and while parked turned off), doors lock/unlock randomly (while parked) and the headlights and flashers go on and off (while parked). I pulled the fuse from the horn so that it doesn't honk while driving down the road or being parked in my garage overnight. Recently I have replaced the alternator and battery and the vehicle will not start in the morning after sitting all night long. I drive the vehicle to work park it and when I get ready to leave the office for the day the vehicle is dead once again. Something is draining the battery. . . We have nothing plugged into any outlets or cigarette lighters inside the vehicle. Even double checked that all interior lights are off.

26 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

Takata recall- I have been having a problem for awhile with my vehicle. The battery will just randomly go dead. I can jump it off and will immediately start up. I have had the battery an alternator checked and they are fine. It will run just fine for a few days and the it will go dead again. I have had it to the dealership with this problem and they can not dind the problem. This has been very frustrating since I find myself stranded quite often. I have made another appt. With the dealership and I am hoping that they can find the problem this time.

27 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Dodge Journey

While driving down the highway, my alternator went out. The battery light came on and all of the lights started flashing. I managed to exit the freeway and get to a safe point. I am reporting this because I see that there was a recall on 2011 - 2014 models. The very same thing happened to my vehicle.

28 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Dodge Journey

My battery and alternator had to be change recently . . . . Plus there was hole. On the coolant line which cause. My car to over heat . . . Can you please check for the coolant wire and the alternator on 2013 models.

29 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2009 Dodge Journey

Approximately one month after purchase, the vehicle would not crank one morning. I had to call someone to jump the vehicle off. Vehicle cranked and ran without incident for approximately two days. Third morning, it had to be jumped again. Had the battery and alternator checked. Mechanic said the battery was not a heavy enough battery. So, I bought a new battery. Approximately 3 weeks later, same scenario. Have contacted the dealership that sold me the car, Dodge, and even checked online. Dealer and Dodge claim that no complaints of this nature have been made. However, my online search turned up several owners that have/are experiencing the same problem. There is a problem in the electrical system somewhere or the battery wouldn't be draining overnight, even after the vehicle is used long enough for the battery to stay charged by the vehicle's charging system. Sometimes the battery drains after sitting only a couple of hours.

30 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Dodge Journey

Alternator is defective ruining both the batter and having to replace the alternator and battery multiple times. This has happened twice already in January 2014 and April 2015. And again now March 2017. On a road trip my wife and kids went on in the middle of the highway the vehicle suddenly lost power and almost control. She was able to pull it to the side of the road. She turned the car off completely then turned it back on and it started. The drove another hour and the battery light came on shortly after the vehicle powered off again. She the called roadside assistance and they brought it home. We had to replace the alternator and battery. The second time this happened I was able to identify the problem as to not get stranded and once again replaced the alternator and battery. The auto parts guy insured me that they had fixed the problem with the new alternators. Clearly not. We just finished out 3rd replacement of both alternator and battery after a long road trip we had to buy a battery in the middle of to get home. This issue needs to be addresse. I spoke with the Dodge dealership originally and they were no help and said they would have just replaced the alternator and battery as well. ## VIN passed ## Dodge Journey 2012 ##.

31 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Dodge Journey

The contact owns a 2013 Dodge Journey. While driving approximately 30 mph, the instrument panel lights began to flash and the battery safer mode warning light displayed. The vehicle began to lose power and stalled. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the alternator was faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 72,852.

32 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2014 Dodge Journey

The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Journey. While driving approximately 30 mph, the battery saver light illuminated and the radio shut off. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery door might have been left open, which caused the battery to die. The technician charged up the battery, but the failure recurred and the vehicle shut down completely. The vehicle was pushed off the road and was towed back to the dealer. The technician diagnosed and replaced the alternator. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The failure mileage was 34,400.

33 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2009 Dodge Journey

Let it be noted that after the r03 recall all the following issues started occurring. First incident: driving about 30mph every light on the dashboard except the engine light illuminated, gauges spun around and back and forth, then stopped all together, the rmp's revved up to 5ooo and the accelerator went to the floor with no action as if the car was off. There was a obviuous loss of power, the car was hesitating like it wanted to stall out, and the vehicle once stopped did not start again until being jumped. Once started, none of the light were on except, oddly now, the engine light which threw codes po0562 & po700. The battery read 12. 2v on the diagnostic while off then 14. 4 when the car was started(after being jumped for 1 minute only). 5 minutes into the drive and boom, the demon took over the car again but now the car would not go pst maybe 7mph, again in accelerator power,no shifting, all power still on in the car, but seems low on power. Once turned off, it would not start but still had power. Again, got jumped, diagnostic, and same codes, alternator fine, battery fine, seems to be getting poor connection. Started 2 days later and loud, unstable idle, won't switch gears seems as if its on but running off of stored power. Dealer now says only code is po622. Symptoms are seeming to be the tipm all over again. Again, none of this started until I took it to Dodge to have the ro3 recall repaired. The key since also does not register at times, will say "mismatch key" on dashboard, all sensors flash then go away such as (gascap, door ajar, check engine light would ignite with no code, gate, key), wouldn't turn over, frequent :dead battery" then starts without jump few minutes later. Overtime the car will act possessed with all lights on is after hitting a bump, again Chrysler dealer recall department is stating tipm, dewlap will not check that while diagnosing. Help!.

34 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Dodge Journey

Purchase date of car was roughly 12/01/12. On 08/23/15, the vehicle wouldn't start and I was told it needed a new battery, so it was replaced the same day. Prior to that, I was noticing strange things like the a/c going full blast and I wasn't able to turn it off, etc. Car wouldn't start again 12/07/15, and I was again told the battery needed to be replaced. Dealer ran diagnostics and found nothing, but charged me $150. Battery was still under warranty with sears, so they replaced it at no charge. Battery died again 03/20/16 while sitting in a parking lot idling for a while. Went on vacation for 10 days in spring of 2016, so vehicle sat, and I returned to a completely dead battery on 04/05/16. Jump started vehicle and drove it a while. Vehicle wouldn't shift down when getting on freeway and was revving way too high, the interior lights were flashing, and a battery saver mode message appeared on the display. I took it to sears again on 04/14/16 (it had sat for 2 days again, and wouldn't start, so had to be jumped). They've had it a week now, have run all kinds of tests and the only thing they can determine is that the battery is draining while the vehicle is parked and not running. Sears is going to replace the battery for me again, but there is clearly a bigger issue going on here, and I hope this is researched further. I also spoke with a technician at the dealership, and he advised they have no recalls on file for this issue. As an aside, when researching the battery saver mode message, I ran across the following thread (so I may have sears replace the alternator too, which could be a waste of money, but may be a necessity. . . 35 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Dodge Journey

Recurring safety issue with no concrete resolution. While driving at 55mph on a parkway vehicle engine stalled. I could not accelerate and the brakes and steering wheel locked. Radio, power windows, etc. All worked and I couldn't shut off the vehicle via the push button start/stop. When I pressed it to try and turn it off it made a noise like it was trying to start but couldn't. While waiting for the tow truck all of the check engine lights started flashing. Had it towed to the dealership, they replaced the alternator ($$) though diagnostics revealed no problems and they were able to start the car fine once it got there. One week later I was on the highway and the exact same thing happened. It was so scary. I could barely get to the shoulder of the road because the steering had locked. My speed was declining rapidly with cars rushing past at 65+ mph. Once on the shoulder, even though my speed had declined to 0, I was on a slight hill so I just kept rolling bc I had no ability to break. Journey was towed to dealership again and, as before, nothing comes up as the source of the problem via the diagnostics test. The one thing that diagnostics did reveal was that it was detecting a key fob in the car with a low battery- both of the keys are at home with me with no car to drive. Additional problems and repair costs incurred have included malfunction of all steering wheel control buttons and horn, tire sensors needing to be replaced (they all showed 0 pressure when the tires were fine), and key fob detection. I have seen many complaints of this scary engine stall experience with no clear resolution as to why it is happening. It seems the mechanics and star techs are stumped. My car only has 75k miles on it and I am terrified to drive it especially with my child in the car. Please investigate this issue before someone gets injured.

Ultima 160 Amp Alternator - Remanufactured

What is an alternator.

The alternator recharges the battery to restore power that is depleted during starting and keeps the electrical accessories on your car powered while it is running. The alternator is driven by the engine belt and may be controlled by the engine computer or voltage regulator to prevent overcharging. Over time, the internal windings and brushes of the alternator can wear out or become contaminated with grease or oil, and this can keep the alternator from producing adequate voltage for recharging or operation. When the alternator loses capacity or fails, the electrical systems of your vehicle will only stay on until the battery's reserve charge has been depleted. Your car might die, but you might be able to restart it with a jump start or by recharging the battery to park somewhere safe. If you notice that your headlights dim when using your power windows, or if your battery just won't stay fully charged, it may be time to replace your alternator or other charging system parts. If you're not sure whether your alternator is the source of the problem, check the tension of your belts to make sure the alternator is spinning while the engine runs, and stop by your local O'Reilly Auto Parts where we can test alternators on or off of your vehicle. If you need a new alternator or other charging system parts, you can shop our selection of replacement alternators, car batteries, and starters to find the parts you need to make your repair.

Car wouldn't start. Replaced the battery. Now the radio will go out for a few then turn back on and headlights flicker randomly. I checked the voltage while the car is running and it is reading about 15 volts and spikes to maybe 15.5 volts randomly. Put all accessories on and same voltage reading with the meter needle spiking back and fourth. Is it possible alt, tipm or voltage regulator? There is no unusual noise coming from the alt. Any help greatly appreciated.

In this section, we will provide an in-depth explanation of how the Dodge Journey alternator functions. From its basic components to the intricate workings, we will leave no stone unturned. You will gain valuable insights into the alternator’s role in your vehicle’s electrical system.

Components of a Dodge Journey Alternator

The Dodge Journey alternator consists of several key components that work together to generate electricity.

See Also: P0562 Dodge Journey: Causes and Fixes

These components include the rotor, stator, diode bridge, voltage regulator, and pulley. Each component plays a crucial role in the alternator’s operation, ensuring a steady supply of power to the electrical system.

Working Principle of a Dodge Journey Alternator

The working principle of the Dodge Journey alternator revolves around electromagnetic induction. When the engine is running, the crankshaft rotates, causing the alternator’s pulley to spin.

As the pulley turns, it drives the alternator rotor, which is surrounded by a stationary stator. The rotation of the rotor within the stator generates an alternating current (AC) through electromagnetic induction.

The AC produced by the alternator is then converted into direct current (DC) through the diode bridge. This rectification process ensures a consistent and stable supply of electrical power to the vehicle’s battery and electrical components.

The voltage regulator monitors and controls the output voltage of the alternator, keeping it within a specified range to prevent overcharging or undercharging of the battery.

The Role of the Alternator Belt

One crucial element in the functioning of the Dodge Journey alternator is the alternator belt. The alternator belt is responsible for transmitting power from the engine’s crankshaft to the alternator’s pulley.

It ensures that the pulley rotates smoothly, enabling the generation of electricity. Regular inspection and maintenance of the alternator belt are essential to prevent belt wear, cracking, or slipping, which can affect the performance of the alternator.

Dodge Journey: P0562 – System Voltage Low

P0562 is a common OBD-II trouble code.  It’s a general code, which means that it means the same thing for any vehicle, including the Dodge Journey .   P0562 indicates that the system voltage is below 10 volts for a solid minute.  With the engine running, the system voltage should be 14.1-14.4 volts, and it’s typically caused by a bad alternator.  It’s very common to get the battery light with P0562.

P0562 Dodge Journey

P0562 Quick Facts

  • P0562 is triggered whenever your Journey’s voltage drops below 10 volts for over a minute straight.
  • Ideal voltage should be around 14 volts with the engine running.
  • There are usually no noticeable symptoms.
  • It is most commonly caused by a bad alternator .

P0562 Symptoms:  Dodge Journey

Dodge Journey P0562 Symptoms

If P0562 is the only code your Journey has, there typically aren’t any noticeable symptoms.(other than the check engine/battery light).  Symptoms can and will appear if the battery voltage drops too far.

If you do experience symptoms, it’s due to battery drain.  it is very likely that your Journey wouldn’t even turn back on if you tried.  The battery will have drained too much to engage the starter again.

Here are the most common P0562 Symptoms:

  • Check Engine Li ght – This is the most common symptom, and often the only symptom.
  • Low Battery Light/Warning –  You’ll more than likely get the battery light with this code.
  • Poor Fuel Economy –  This can occur when your Journey’s engine and computer are not getting enough voltage.  It may not be able to correct the ignition timing or air/fuel mixture in real time anymore.  Or, the spark will be too weak.
  • Misfiring – Without enough voltage to fire the spark plugs properly, the motor will sputter and cough.  The check engine light may even begin to flash if the misfire is bad enough.
  • Problems Shifting – Today’s modern automatic transmissions are computer controlled.  Without enough voltage getting to them, they won’t be able to respond to the engine RPM and vehicle speed in a timely manner.
  • Won’t Start – A very common situation with P0562 is running the vehicle and everything is operating fine, and the check engine light comes on (battery light too, usually).  You get the vehicle home and when you go to drive it again it won’t start.  This strongly indicates a bad alternator.

P0562 Causes + Diagnosis:  Dodge Journey

Here are the most common causes of P0562:

1. Alternator

Journey P0562 Diagnosis

The alternator supplies voltage to the battery and to all of your Journey’s electrical system while it is running.  If it goes bad, then it can cause P0562.  If it goes all the way bad that’s make diagnosing the code relatively easy.  The vehicle won’t start if it runs too long with a bad alternator.  How long it would take to drain the battery all the way is going to depend on the battery’s age and driving conditions.

It’s when the alternator begins to intermittently fail it can be tricky to diagnose.  Most auto parts stores will be able to test your alternator for free.  If you do end up needing a new alternator, they are somewhat affordable .  Make sure to change the serpentine belt while you are at it.

Dodge Journey Alternator Diagnosis

2. Voltage Regulator

The voltage regulator ensures that a certain level of voltage passes to the charging system to keep it from overloading.  It can keep too much voltage from passing and throw P0562.

3. Battery Wiring

There’s a lot of wiring associated with your Journey’s charging system.  You need to check for corrosion, fraying, and poor connections around the following wiring:

  • Battery Terminals – The battery terminals, if left alone long enough, will corrode on any vehicle.  When this happens it’s difficult for the charging system to function properly.
  • Alternator to Battery Wiring – Take a look at the wiring from the alternator to the battery.  Look to see if it has been damaged or frayed in any way.  Pay particular notice to any part that may be making contact with any other part of the engine.
  • Ground Wire – The ground wire that bolts to the negative battery terminal will bolt to the chassis or engine block.  Make sure that the connection is strong and corrosion free.
  • PCM Connection to Alternator – Check to see if the wiring going from the alternator straight to the PCM looks good.  It has a long distance to travel, and while well protected, can still get damaged.  Look for fraying where the wiring harness connects to the PCM.  This is the least likely wiring issue on this list, so only pursue it if everything else leads to a dead end.

4. Bad Battery

While a bad battery can throw P0562, it’s not nearly as likely as an alternator or wiring issue.  You should have it tested before replacing anyway.

5. Massive Battery Drain

If your vehicle has aftermarket equipment such as a very high watt stereo system, winch, or something else, it could be placing such a heavy load on the charging system that you’re getting P0562.  Remember, it needs to be at least a minute to throw the code.

There can also be a major power drain if something goes wrong as well.  This can happen if something shorts out and starts pulling way too much voltage.

Dodge Journey Battery Drain Diagnosis

Conclusion:  P0562 Dodge Journey

Tracking down P0562 can be tough.  It’s usually the alternator that is at fault.  If there is anything that you would like to add, please leave a comment below.  Good luck fixing your Journey!

Replaced my alternator six months ago, yesterday the battery light came on. I made it home before everything died. Charged it up this morning and went to O'Reilly's and had the alternator and battery checked. The technician said the voltage regulator is bad. This model which is a 2.4 ltr 2013 Avenger, says the regulator is external. The tech said it's in the computer module. He said that some garages are known to install a external regulator and by-pass the computer module. Any help would be so appreciated, I am retired and need the car for my visits to the nursing home to sit with my wife. Thanks in advance.

2013 dodge journey voltage regulator

O'reilly's auto Parts stores have TECHNICIANS ???? They may have tested the alternator output and found that not correct. BUT that does NOT mean a bad voltage regulator, there are wires between the alternator and the ECM(where the computer controlled regulator is housed). A good, reputable Indepenant shop should be able to check those wires and their connections and be able to say for sure what is preventing proper charge rates. I personally tend to NOT trust diagnosis made by parts counter people!
