Here’s how you can cruise through the Dutch tulip fields this spring

Farah Al Mazouni 🇸🇾 🇺🇸

It’s certainly been a gloomy year, but unlike anywhere else in the world, the Netherlands can look forward to a colourful tulip season — hoera ! 🥳

What better way to combat the lockdown blues than to feast your eyes on gleeful acres of tulips in a tulip field trip this spring?

So we’re bringing you the ultimate solution: an early-bird deal for a corona-proof private tour of this typisch Dutch phenomenon: here’s how to cruise the Dutch tulip fields this spring! 🌷

When are the Dutch tulips in season? You can typically catch the Dutch tulips from the beginning of April until mid-May. Naturally, these times are reliant on Mother Nature, so timing each year can vary.

Photo-of-tulip-field-Netherlands-Holland

Tulip season: a Dutch field day

Tulips , as peaceful as they are, are behind an annual frenzy that attracts internationals and locals alike.

Thousands of people flock to South Holland each year, heading to the Keukenhof (a.k.a the garden of Europe) to experience 79 acres of this seasonal extravaganza in a tradition that transcended the coronavirus pandemic .

Due to its popularity, this season is usually overcrowded, with sold-out events, and backed up roads full of flower enthusiasts — not quite the Dutch tulip experience people are hoping for. 😬

Renzy: corona-proof and up-close tulip 2022 tours

At the end of the day, the goal is to enjoy the famous Dutch flower fields up-close and in a wholesome way. After all, no one’s there to take pictures only to realize later that there’s someone’s head just in the view, right when that #tulips post is locked and loaded.

That’s where Renzy swoops in. Their self-guided GPS and audio tours offer a COVID-19 safe field viewing of the lesser-known — but just as beautiful — tulip fields near Keukenhof. All the beauty of the Dutch tulips, off the beaten track!

amsterdam tulip tours 2022

This 120-minute unique and beloved experience within the heart of the flower bulb region is perfect for travellers, couples, friends, families with kids, and even small groups.

With Renzy’s well-planned tour , you can look forward to stopping that vehicle to admire the colours and scents, and finally score some pro shots of tulips and flowers up close.

What vehicle? Great question. 😉

Renzy’s fleet of Tulipmobiles

Meet the Twizies: sustainable, electric vehicles that you get to drive yourself around seas of tulip fields, far away from viruses and tourists with no spatial awareness.

This tiny but mighty tulipmobile is suitable for two people: either two adults, or an adult and a child. Family packages are also available so you can book a couple of Twizies for you and your loved ones.

Photo-of-cars-driving-through-tulip-field-tour-Netherlands

Don’t be fooled by the Twizies’ size, we called them mighty for a reason. 😉 Each of the vehicles will take you on a 20 kilometre fixed GPS ride for about two hours. With plenty of opportunities to take photos along the route, and an added stop at a tulip farm for their daytime tours!

In addition to its GPS capability, the Twizies also come with an audio guide available in your choice of Dutch, English, and German. You’ll get to cruise along while hearing entertaining ins and outs about the area, along with #CoolTulipFacts.

Family packages for merrier tulip trips

Big family? No problem! Start making plans which involve heaps of tulips, because Renzy has your big crowd covered with a family package .

Available for two adults plus two children (aged four to 18 years), the package comes with a special treasure hunt twist for the enjoyment of the family.

Photo-of-father-and-son-in-car-tulip-tour-netherlands

I’m in! How can I take a tulip tour through the Dutch fields?

Booking a tulip field tour with Renzy is simple and easy. You can reserve your spot online now for tours between April 1 and May 8, 2022. Those tulip Twizies are limited though, so booking ahead of time is recommended! (We’re just saying — they sold out last year.) 😬

The two-hour tours are available 7 days a week, within the following time slots:

  • 10:00 – 12:00
  • 13:00 – 15:00
  • 16:00 – 18:00
  • 19:00 – 21:00

But do keep in mind, since you’re being handed the keys to an actual car to roam in a field, a few conditions apply:

  • Drivers must be 21 years or older, with a valid drivers’ licence for at least three years.
  • If you’re not from Europe, North America, South America, or Australia — an international driver’s licence is needed.*
  • Deposit an advance payment of €150 per Renault Twizy, in addition to an excess risk payment ( eigen risico ) of €500 per Twizy.
  • You’ll be operating a vehicle, so no alcohol is allowed.

*Additional cancellation conditions and policies can be found through Renzy’s webpage .

You’ll pay a price per Twizy, so it’s very straightforward. For one vehicle (which is suitable for two people) you pay €97.

If you’re going with a friend, that’s only €48.5 — prepare your Tikkie . 😉

As for the family package, you’ll be booking two Twizies (suitable for two adults and two children) for the price of €145.

Early bird gets the tulip!! DutchReview readers get a 10% discount on Renzy bookings until March 31st for their tour spot in April or May — score!

Just use the code Tulips2022 at checkout for this early bird deal.

The traffic routes through the Netherlands are very well developed, and despite the high population density of the Netherlands, you can get from A to B relatively quickly. However, this is not the case during rush hours, and during festivals such as the Flower Parade, when crowds are expected.

Keukenhof is located between Amsterdam and The Hague and is easily accessible via the A4 motorway (Nieuw-Vennep exit) and the A44 motorway (Lisse exit 3). Follow the signs to “Keukenhof”.

Large parking spaces for cars and buses are available, there can sometimes be traffic jams on the access road, especially at Easter and at the Keukenhof Flower Parade 2022 weekend. The parking fee is 6.00 €. Ride like the Dutch by bike or public bus!

The Tulip, Amsterdam’s Most Precious Flower, And Daffodils

The Dutch plant tulips in large fields to obtain tulip bulbs for export. The tulips in the tulip fields are not about the flower, but about the bulbs. The flowers are mown at the end of May after the tulip season so that the power remains in the tulip bulb.

In summer the tulip bulbs are taken out of the ground, cleaned and dried. In late summer the best tulip bulbs are for sale.  The tulips for flower sales grow in greenhouses, where they are protected from the weather.

Daffodils are among the first spring flowers to adorn the landscape with their first yellow spots. With the opening of the Keukenhof, you will be able to find them earlier than the tulip. The natural habitat of wild daffodils is Northwest Africa and Southwest Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Daffodils and tulips are welcome heralds of spring in most European gardens.

Besides tulips, you will find millions of other flowers and plants of all kinds which are auctioned daily. On weekdays, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., visitors can view the largest flower auction in the world.

Arcen Castle Gardens

For me, one of the most beautiful experiences in the Netherlands was the visit to the castle gardens of Arcen. The romantic Holland fower park is open all year round and is particularly beautiful when the roses bloom (June). Read my article with photo gallery here .

History: Tulip Time In Amsterdam

Although the tulip actually comes from Turkey, Holland is known worldwide for it. The first bulbs reached the country at the end of the 16th century on ships from Constantinople (today Istanbul). In the Bollenstreek the Dutch started cultivating tulips in different colors and shapes. They were especially popular among the upper social classes.

With the increasing popularity of the ornamental plant, new forms of tulip trade were added. In the mid-1630s the price rose massively and speculators entered the market. Investors sold land and houses to invest in tulip bulbs. A tulip like “Semper Augustus” or “Viceroy” cost thousands of guilders. The so-called wind trade collapsed in 1637 and caused massive losses. In the case of irrational financial developments, one still speaks today of Tulipomania or tulip madness.

Best Time To Plant Tulips

Most likely you will buy tulip bulbs in Holland during your trip. Normally you buy tulip bulbs in late summer and plant them in autumn. But can you plant tulip bulbs in spring? Yes, you can. If you want to plant tulip bulbs in spring, you have to consider the following:

In spring the bulb bottom is already swollen. On some bulbs, you can already see the tip of the shoot. The bulbs must, therefore, be planted very carefully so as not to damage them.

The soil must, of course, be frost-free! The bulb cannot be pressed into the soil as in autumn. The soil must be carefully excavated and the bulb placed in it.

Confused About Holland Or Netherlands? Where’s Holland?

The Dutch often equate Holland with the Netherlands in their language. Where is Holland? It consists of the provinces of North Holland and South Holland and is part of the Netherlands. Holland borders the Northsea in the west and the IJsselmeer in the east.

The northern border is near the island of Texel and in the south, the delta of the rivers Rhine, Maas and Schelde form a natural border. Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague are all located in Holland. The majority of Holland lies below sea level.

About Keukenhof in Holland & The Tulip Festival

In the spring of each year, the Bollenstreek area of The Netherlands becomes awash with colour as the Annual Tulip Festival season begins and the flowers start to bloom and Keukenhof , also known as the ' Garden of Europe ' offers one of the biggest and most famous displays.

The Bollenstreek (which roughly translates to ' Bulb Region' ) is a group of towns and villages in The Netherlands that includes Hillegom, Katwijk, Lisse, Noordwijk, Noordwijkerhout and Teylingen, and they are all known for growing flowers.

Located in the village of Lisse, Keukenhof covers around 79 acres (32 hectares) and is part of a much larger estate, that of the ' Keukenhof Castle Estate' ( see our page about Keukenhof History to learn more ) and during the annual flower festival, Keukenhof is one of the most famous flower displays in the world.

The Keukenhof Garden designers plant around 7,000,000 bulbs each year. They start planting the bulbs in October of the year before and then continue to do so over the coming months to try and ensure there is a constant bloom of flowers during the short period that Keukenhof is open to the public for, which for the 2024 show will be from 21st March to 12th May 2024 .

Its official! The first bulbs for Keukenhof 2024 were planted on Thursday 5th October 2023 which marks the beginning of the preparation for Keukenhof 2024 and the 75th anniversary!

What's the quietest time to visit Keukenhof is a question we regularly get asked - given more than one million people visit Keukenhof each year, you will never have the gardens to yourself, that is for sure, however it is generally quieter in the mornings before 10:30 AM and in the afternoon after 16:00 . If you like sunsets, the evening time can be an amazing time to visit because as the sun goes down, the shadows and colours change and can create beautiful views.

Keukenhof Tickets & Tulip Festival- BOOK THEM IN ADVANCE

We strongly suggest you book tickets for Keukenhof in advance as they regularly sell out due to its popularity and its also cheaper to book in advance than buy on the day at the ticket office. To see our full range of Keukenhof Tickets just CLICK HERE

Keukenhof Garden Flowers

The main reason that people visit Keukenhof is of course to see what they call the stunning 'living catalogue' of flowers that are on show.

Visitors travel from all over the world to enjoy the incredible displays of flowers with over 7,000,000 bulbs planted at Keukenhof each year.

The flowers are planted according to colour, size and shape to ensure they offer the best possible viewing experience for the visitors to enjoy.

Although Keukenhof is famous for tulips, there are other flower varieties also on show including cut flowers and pot plants. In the pavilions you will find displays of daffodils, lilies, irises, roses, hyacinths and carnations.

The Keukenhof Park Guide Book offers more information about Keukenhof and the flowers that are on display, as well as behind the scenes information. The guide book costs €7.00 and can be added to your order during the ticket booking process. You then pick up the guide book at the entrance to the park on the day of your visit when you present your entry ticket. The guide book is also a lovely souvenir.

What to see and do at Keukenhof Gardens & The Tulip Festival

Keukenhof Gardens is a wonderful day out that the whole family can enjoy . Parents can pick up a fun scavenger hunt at the entrance for the kids to enjoy whilst visiting Keukenhof and will help to keep them entertained as you walk around the area.

Keukenhof actually has around 10 miles (16 km) of paths and trails to explore. There's also a farmyard area where the kids can touch and interact with the animals that live there. Keukenhof has also built play areas for the kids called the Miffy Playground to help entertain them. Keukenhof really is a great day out that the whole family can enjoy.

The Keukenhof Windmill

The Tower Mill or Keukenhof Windmill is an authentic Dutch Windmill which was built in 1892 and gifted to Keukenhof in 1975. Visitors can climb the windmill to its balcony and enjoy the beautiful views as you look down and see the blankets of colour below that the flowers create, as well as the surrounding area.

The Willem-Alexander Pavilion

A greenhouse full of colour and bloom! The Willem-Alexander Pavilion (named after the King of the Netherlands) is a greenhouse or glass-house as some call it, and offers incredible displays of colour from the flowers on show. It can be enjoyed throughout the Keukenhof season no matter the weather. You will find many types of tulips with a huge variety of colours on show as well as other plants. Its a very popular pavilion!

The Lily Pad Pond

When you find the main lake at Keukenhof you can have some fun and walk across the water! Placed strategically across the pond you will find wooden lily pads which sit just above the water level. For those brave enough they are indeed stepping stones across the pond and gives the impression those wandering over them are walking on water! Just try not to lose your balance as you may end up rather wet!

Keukenhof Inspirational Gardens

Each year the Keukenhof designers create surprise garden themes which are referred to as the 'Inspirational Gardens' and each year they are different. The Inspirational Gardens from 2023 included the Reconnection Garden, Tropical Beach Garden, Green Tea Garden, Cottage Garden, Red Romance Garden and Delft Blue Garden.

Keukenhof 2024 Inspirational Gardens look to be:

' Organic Garden ' - which will involve a core of nature and a welcoming living environment for bees and other insects.

' Tropical Beach Garden ' - which will involve palm trees, a holiday theme, sand, a boat and hammock and blue skies (if the weather plays nicely!).

' Pink Tea Garden ' - The idea of this garden is to recreate little balcony gardens but on a slightly larger scale, so will incorporate herbs and spices that are regularly grown on people's own balconies and windowsills and places like that! Herbs such as mint, lemon balm, camomile, chocolate mint and other tasty plants will be found. I can just imagine the aroma now!

' Graffiti Garden ' - An artistic modern twist with graffiti, this garden will be colourful with indigenous plants and flower bulbs. A fabulous sight!

' Red Romance Garden ' - A quaint (and likely popular!) spot that will be romantic where you can share a kiss with your partner!

Keukenhof Petting Zoo

Although it’s designed to entertain the kids, adults can also enjoy the petting zoo! I think I would spend most of the day there! The petting zoo includes some lovely farmyard animals such as goats, pigs, chickens, rabbits and a peacock, amongst other animals . There is also a strategically placed cafe next to the petting zoo, so mums and dads and other family members and friends can go and enjoy a coffee whilst keeping an eye on the kids!

Keukenhof Scavenger Hunt

Tulips in Holland

Did you know that Tulips were introduced to Holland in the 16th century when they were imported from the then Otterman Empire (now known as Turkey).

In the 17th century a phase known as 'Tulip Mania' occurred when the price of some tulips reached extreme levels. Traders became fascinated with rare broken tulips that grew into flowers with strips or speckled flowers. Some of these rare bulbs sold for the price of a house. Tulip Mania then ended in 1637 with prices returning back to normal.

Frequently asked questions

Bollenstreek is the surrounding area of Keukenhof. Bollenstreek is the whole flower-growing area so includes Lisse (where Keukenhof is) and other villages around it that also grow flowers.

Keukenhof is in the Bollenstreek area, yes. Bollenstreek is the whole flower-growing area in Holland that Lisse (Keukenhof's village) is in. So Keukenhof is within the Bollenstreek area.

Bollenstreek roughly translates to Bulb-Strip (so it basically refers to the Flower-Bulb growing region in Holland) and is the nickname given to the whole area surrounding Keukenhof and Lisse (Lisse is the village where Keukenhof is). Its called Bollenstreek as the whole area is famous for growing flowers so during the spring time you can see miles upon miles of fields that are all growing flowers! The Bollenstreek area also includes other villages such as Haarlem, Sassenheim, Hillegom, Lisse and Noordwijkerhout.

Keukenhof is wheelchair-friendly and also offers disabled toilet facilities.

No - once you leave Keukenhof in order to re-enter you are required to purchase another ticket. This is with the exception of the Flower Day Parade where Keukenhof will allow you to re-enter on that date only if that is your ticket date.

The answer to this is generally no, unless you have permission from the landowner of flower grower. You must remember the fields are all owned by flower growers so walking through fields is not allowed as you can damage their flowers.

This is always a tough question to answer as its up to you as the visitor. Some visitors like to stay all day until closing time and just relax and enjoy Keukenhof as much as possible. However, you could enjoy Keukenhof in as little as 2-4 hours. There is a lot to see and enjoy, so why rush!

Dogs are allowed to Keukenhof as long as they are on a leash.

Millions! Would you believe they plant over 7,000,000 bulbs each year and the majority will grow into beautiful flowers, so there are millions to see!

The gardeners plant the first bulbs in October the year before. So for Keukenhof 2024, they will start to plant the bulbs in October 2023! UPDATE! The first bulbs for Keukenhof 2024 have officially been planted and it happened on Thursday 5th October 2023, marking the beginning of the preparations for Keukenhof's 75th anniversary show in 2024!

Given its popularity (you must remember that normally over 1,000,000 people visit Keukenhof each year), its unlikely to ever be quiet, but the crowds are normally smaller before 11AM, or later on in this afternoon, for example after 3PM.

This is actually a very common question with a very simple answer - NO. Visitors are not allowed to pick any of the flowers on display at Keukenhof. However, there are shops at Keukenhof where products are available for purchase!

The 2024 Keukenhof show will open on Thursday 21st March at its last day is Sunday 12th May 2024.

During its opening period, Keukenhof is open every day of the week from 08:00AM until 19:30 each day including the weekends and holidays.

Keukenhof is only open for a very short period each year, normally mid-March to mid-May. For Keukenhof 2024, it will be open from 21st March 2024 until 12th May 2024, so just under 2-months in total. This is also why its called the Spring Garden! This is the prime period for the flowers to be in full bloom so their beauty can be enjoyed.

Know before you go

A sight to behold.

Our 2024 Guide to

Tulip fields near amsterdam.

In 2023 Barack Obama chose us to show him Dutch tulip fields and we can do the same for you in 2024. However, if you think no, I’ll see them on my own then you might want to read this guide!

Spoiler alert, though. You’ll need your own car. If you don’t have one and will be travelling to Keukenhof by bus, then you might want to check out our:

About this guide to tulip fields

We’ve been doing tulip tours from Amsterdam since 2015. In that time we’ve met a lot of guests, and we’ve found that the range of knowledge they have of about Dutch tulips and tulip fields ranges quite considerably… Okay, that was a bit diplomatic. Most people don’t know that much, and that’s okay – you’re not from here.

We’ve put together this guide to help people get a better understanding of how they can see Dutch tulip fields when they come to Amsterdam.  The internet is full of people selling you things and the tourism industry is no different. Of course, wed love you to come on one of tours, but regardless we think there is a need for an honest and hype-free guide. Also, it’s short and to-the-point.

Here it is. We’ve broken this guide down into a series of questions that a visitor might ask, starting at the most basic and getting more specific as we go. We hope you find it helpful.

Rory,  Amsterdam Tulips Tour

When will the tulip fields be in bloom?

We can’t say for sure, but generally mid to late April, and usually the very early bit of May.

In an average year, tulips bloom in mid to late April. The fields stay in bloom for two to three weeks before the farmers cut them. Additionally, there are man different varieties of tulips and some bloom earlier or later. This means there is generally about a five week spread when you can see tulip fields in bloom.

However, bang in the middle of that five week spread is when you’ll see the greatest density. At the outer end of the window you have to really know where to look to find a field. If you have the benefit of planning your holiday, then targetting April 20 or the few days after it is the safest policy.

However , there are also hyacinth fields and these flowers bloom a couple of weeks earlier. Hyacinth fields are just as spectacular as tulip fields!

amsterdam tulip tours 2022

Are there tulip fields in Amsterdam?

No. There are no tulip fields in Amsterdam.

Luckily, the Netherlands is a very small country so  you are not actually that far away from tulip fields, but won’t see any in the Amsterdam itself.

  •  The area in and around Keukenhof / Lisse, circa 35km south-west of Amsterdam.
  • The Beemster, Alkmaar, & West-Friesland regions of Noord Holland (to the north of Amsterdam). Beemster is 35km away.
  • Flevoland, to the east of Amsterdam, circa 40km away.
  • There are other spots too, but these are the main ones and the ones closest to Amsterdam.

A classic picture of an Amsterdam canal

Okay, but there are tulip fields in Keukenhof, right?

Actually, no.

Many people assume that Keukenhof has tulip fields, but it doesn’t. It’s a set of beautifully manicured gardens, but no tulip fields. The gardens do look out onto one flower field, but you are at quite a remove from it and you have to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with other visitors.

However, the area surrounding Keukenhof is full of tulip and hyacinth farms. It’s incredibly picturesque in Spring, however these are not accessible by foot. Neither are they sign-posted. If you’re the type who doesn’t mind venturing down a little backroad, and you have a car, then you’ll almost certainly happen upon some.

Keukenhof flower gardens

Does this mean I need to have a car to visit a tulip field?

Yes… (Or  take one of our tours!).

Our Tulips Field from Keukenhof Tour was designed for people already travelling to Keukenhof by bus.

Our Keukenhof & Tulips Tour from Amsterdam incudes transport to Keukenhof and a tour of the surrounding flower field area.

Our Off-The-Beaten-Track Tour whisks you to the tulip fields north of Amsterdam and away from the crowds of Keukenhof.

In general, mass tourism hasn’t cuaght hold of tulip fields yet. We hope that it stays that way. There are likely a few other independent companies or individual guides who offer a similar service to us. If you find them on Get Your Guide or Viator please try to find their actual websites to book – those big companies take a rather large commission.

Okay, enough about your tours - I have a car and I'm going to Keukenhof anyway, how do I see tulip fields?

Ooh. Someone’s a bit touchy, but okay! It’s actually quite straightforward:

The flower field growing area around Keukenhof extends beyond the details provided here, but let’s keep it straightforward. Head to Keukenhof, then explore the backroads nearby. That might feel like a terrible plan and one ripe for an argument in the car, but it’s the only way to do it.

The specific fields rotate from year to year and they don’t all bloom at the same time. Plus, if we gave actual coordinates then that one field would get too busy and it would defeat the exercise.

However, the area is so dense with flower fields in April that if you veer down backroads you will stumble upon some. We do recommend staying west of the N208 as the concentration is higher on that side of the road.

For instance, if you’re at Keukenhof, input the nearby town of Hillegom into your navigator. Opt for the backroads instead of the N208 (the yellow road in the picture, the main connector). This is safer for stops, as backroads are more conducive than main roads.

Apply a similar approach for the neighboring towns of De Zilk, Vogelenzang, and Noordwijkerhout. Enjoy your scenic drive!

Also: don’t worry about getting lost when you travel down backroads! It’s a very small country, and you’re never too far from a bigger road. As long as you have GPS you’ll be fine.

amsterdam tulip tours 2022

Right, I have a car but I'd like to avoid the crowds of Keukenhof. Now what?

Travel north to the Beemster!

This where our Off-The-Beaten-Track Tour goes to. We can’t give you that route as it’s too much off the beaten track and you’d get lost! So simply, enter Middenbeemster into your navigator and take the main freeway.

Once you reach Middenbeemster, you should then enter the nearby towns of Noordbeemster and Westbeemster into your navigator (the Dutch aren’t overly exuberant with place names!) and then travel the backroads in between.

This roads of this region are actually laid out in a grid formation (it used be a lake and was drained by windmills in the 1600s), so the backroads are all straight.

You will find tulip fields along these roads.

There is also a nearby windmill which is open to the public so that is nice to add as a sightseeing stop: Noordervaart 2, 1636 VL Schermerhorn. Museummolen .

Other Northern Options For Tulip Fields

Yes, but it’s a bit more complicated!

Just like the area around Keukenhof, the area to the tulip fields area to the north of Amsterdam is (much) more extensive than the above text details. We mainly go to the Beemster and Keukenhof / Lisse, so we’re not as intimately familiar with how to find the flower fields in the following areas or towns. But in case you feel like Googling a bit more, the following can be good places to start: Anna Paulowna, Alkmaar, Zwaagdijk West and Zwaagdijk Oost.

amsterdam tulip tours 2022

What about Flevoland? (To the east)

Sure, but it’s not our forte so we won’t give specifics about how to find tulip fields there.

However, Flevoland is a new region -it was literally created in the 1950s and 60s. At the risk of offending its good citizens, in general we find it less interesting and historic than the Beemster and the region around Keukenhof. So, we’ve never been tempted to bring guests there. However, we imagine that its tulip fields (like the Beemster’s) are generally free of visitors.

A map of Flevoland

What about bikes at Keukenhof? Will that do the trick?

A little bit.

You can rent bikes in the Keukenhof parking area to explore the surrounding area (you can’t actually bring them in to the Gardens). They will give a little map too with some routes plotted. These will get you to tulip and hyacinth fields. The one problem is that these are the fields closest to Keukenhof and everyone gets the same map.

Our Tulips Fields From Keukenhof Tour competes a little bit this service. Maybe you like a minivan tour or maybe you prefer to get some exercise. The bike costs e16 for the day or e11 for three hours.  More info here.

Bike rental at Keukenhof

Okay! I found a tulips field. Now what?

Congratulations. You’re about to enter private property.

Any tulips or hyacinths field you find is private property. They’re real working farms with an actual (and FYI – the crop is the tulip bulb, not the flower) agricultural product. Most farmers don’t mind visitors to their fields – they understand the attraction. However, some farmers in the Keukenhof region, put a barrier, fence, or gate up around their fields. This means you’re not welcome.

Please exercise common sense when entering a flower field. And if you don’t have common sense, then the following applies:

  • Stay at the very end of the field
  • Don’t walk in betweent the rows of tulips. Most people can’t help but walk a metre or three in. This will probably be tolerated, but no more than that!
  • Definitely don’t pick any flowers
  • Definitely don’t trample or stand on the flowers
  • If you don’t take 1.5 million photos for Instagram, then it didn’t happen!

Betsie inspecting tulips for viruses

What's all this about hyacinth fields?

This is the big secret of Dutch tulip season!

There are also lots of hyacinth fields in the Netherlands and they bloom a bit earlier than tulips. They are absolutely as spectacular as tulip fields – and well, this might be a heresy but one could argue that they are more spectacular as hyacinths have a much stronger scent: When you step into a field of hyacinths on a sunny Spring day, it’s like stepping into an aromatherapy bath!

This means that if you’re in Amsterdam in early April and you’re a bit too early for tulips, you’re actually in time for hyacinths. And just in case you think, it’s hype from a tour business, here are some pictures of last year’s hyacinth field, which we visited early in the season:

5 Really Cool Amsterdam Tulip Tours For 2024

One of the things that draws everyone to the Netherlands is the famous tulips. In fact it is one of the things that the country is known for. I know that I was extremely captivated by them before I became a Dutch resident. Don’t get me wrong, I still love tulips but now I can plant them in my own garden.

Now before we dig into all the different Amsterdam tulip tours, I want to emphasize that the tulip fields are not in Amsterdam. They are a distance off. The most prominent and well known tulip fields are in and around the Keukenhof gardens.

Getting from Keukenhof from Amsterdam can seem daunting but it really isn’t so if you are up for the challenge of tackling the Dutch public system on your own, by all means do! It is super easy to get around using the train and other modes of transport and almost everyone speaks English so it’s easy to have a conversation should you get stuck anywhere.

Okay, that being said, if you are nervous or have a time crunch then taking one of the numerous Amsterdam tulip tours is definitely the way to go. I’m going to help you decide which of these Amsterdam tulip tours are best suited for you.

🌷 Heading to Keukenhof gardens? Make sure that you book your ticket in advance or it may get sold out! 🚌

Table of Contents

1. keukenhof entry ticket + shuttle bus.

The eager people heading into the Keukenhof garden after they disembarked from their Amsterdam tulip tours.

⭐️ Rating: 4.6/5 (4960 Reviews) Price: $36.93 per person Duration: Valid for 1 day 📍 Meeting Point: This is Holland, Overhoeksplein 51 in Amsterdam Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Now before I talk about all the different Amsterdam Tulip Tours, I have to mention that you can book your entry ticket online and you should. This is because there are thousands of people who head to Keukenhof every day. The place gets packed and if you don’t have your time slot booked out, you probably will not get in.

The beauty about booking the entry ticket on Getyourguide is that you can also book a shuttle bus that takes you right to the doors of Keukenhof. You don’t have to worry about transport at all.

“Hassle free transportation to the Keukenhof with multiple bus options on the return transport.” Sarah ( read more reviews now! )

Plus there are many buses that go to and fro so you can take your time at the gardens before heading to catch a bus back. I find this incredibly convenient and super handy. In fact, it is one of my preferred ways to explore the tulip fields.

2. Guided Amsterdam Tulip Tours

Yellow, purple, white and red tulip beds in the Keukenhof gardens. Something that you will see when you catch one of the Amsterdam tulip tours.

⭐️ Rating: 4.5/5 (2,350 Reviews) Price: $37.66 per person Duration: 5 hours 30 minutes 📍 Meeting Point: Tours & Tickets Amsterdam, De Ruijterkade 34, 1012 AA Amsterdam, Netherlands Details: Read more on Viator!

There are loads of Amsterdam tulip tours that head out every day during tourist season. In fact, it is one of the busiest times of the year. Now while I will be discussing all the different types of Amsterdam tulip tours available, it would be remiss of me not to talk about the standard options that are the most popular. So if this is something that you want to do, make sure to book your ticket in advance .

The tours come in two options: the guided tour and the self guided tour. The self guided tour participants are provided with a multi lingual audio guide and you can explore the Keukenhof gardens using this so you can set your own pace.

“Not only was the bus and bus driver very pleasant, but the guide on the bus was fantastic, Dash friendly, funny, and helpful! Would do this again, without a doubt!” Judith ( read more reviews now! )

The guided tour obviously have their own guide onboard. Make sure to select your language of instruction carefully before you book though because the tours are available in multiple languages. All groups meet in front of the Central Station in Amsterdam which is pretty convenient.

3. Flower Fields + Cultural Bike Tour (Small Group)

A cycle parked at the side of the yellow tulip fields. Cycling Amsterdam tulip tours are always a great idea.

⭐️ Rating: 4.8/5 (92 Reviews) Price: $50.12 per person Duration: 3 hours 📍 Meeting Point: The main entrance of Keukenhof Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

If you really want to explore the Netherlands, you really should hop on a cycle at some point or the other. Cycling around Keukenhof is super easy. The cycle paths are well demarcated and there isn’t much of an incline. In fact, I was a hesitant cycle rider (back then) and I actually enjoyed the ride.

Now when you visit Keukenhof gardens, you will find that aside from the millions of tulips in the actual gardens, there are fields and fields of tulip fields next to it. Exploring these by cycle is one of the epic activities that you can indulge in.

This particular tour takes you on a guided ride around the area and you can explore some iconic spots that many people miss when they visit.

“It was a great way to get acquainted with: the area beyond the Keukenhof Tulip Garden, some history, farming, the tulip fields, and see the VAST array of tulips… some 70 different examples. Our guide Ingrid was a delight!! Our guests truly enjoyed themselves.” Ingrid ( read more reviews now! )

You also get a chance to visit the iconic gardens too but I think it gives you a deeper understanding of the area, how the tulips grow and the history behind it.

Plus it is a fun way to spend the day rather than just visiting the gardens and heading back to Amsterdam.

4. Private Amsterdam Tulip Tours

Rows of yellow and red tulips which you can see if you take one of the Amsterdam tulip tours.

⭐️ Rating: 4.5/5 (22 Reviews) Price: $558 per group (max 7 people) Duration: 5 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Hotel/Cruise port/Airport pick-up and drop-off Details: Read more on Viator!

Now if taking the public transport is not your thing then you have two options in had. Either book a group tour or a private tour.

Group tours can really annoy people who love their own independence to explore and discover a location. If you are one of these people then think about taking one of the private Amsterdam tulip tours.

“OUTSTANDING!!! A trip to Amsterdam is not complete without a visit to Keukenhof. We had an absolutely wonderful time walking around the tulip grounds. It’s a shame it’s only open for 6 weeks. Our driver was Sam… absolutely the best!! It was our daughter’s 15th birthday and he even brought her a small gift.” Greg ( read more reviews now! )

Here you will be ferried to and fro in not just a private vehicle but your very own Mercedes-Benz V-Class, S-Class, or E-Class. Not only is it extremely comfortable but you can see the gardens at your own pace. This is also great if you are traveling with young kids and want the added comfort.

Plus you have pick up and drop options that you can set which means that you could ask for a pick up from your hotel itself which is pretty handy.

5. Combine The Tulip Fields With Another Experience

The colorful windmills in Zaanse Schans can be combined with some of the Amsterdam tulip tours.

Something that you might want to consider is to combine the Amsterdam tulip tours with another popular sight in the Netherlands. Now many of the day trips from Amsterdam can fit in with this but it is important to understand that many of these trips aren’t possible unless you have a car.

Luckily there are many Amsterdam tulip tours that offer this experience. Here are a couple that I would recommend considering.

  • Keukenhof + Giethoorn
  • Keukenhof + Delft
  • Keukenhof + Zaanse Schans Windmills

There you have it! These are some of the best Amsterdam tulip tours that I could find. Each one gives you a chance to see the tulips in a slightly different perspective. One thing that you have to understand is that the crowds to Keukenhof are always going to be a part of your visit. So head out early and be prepared for them.

Have you been to Keukenhof? What was your experience like? Would you head there again? Let us know in the comments below!

Tulip Fields in spring 2019

Tulips growing on the tulip fields are mostly grown for the flower bulb and not for the flower itself. Most tulip fields are therefore headed after 2 or 3 weeks of flowering so that more energy can go to the flower bulb instead of the flower. In Keukenhof Gardens and at the tulip show gardens , the tulips are not cut back and therefore the tulips there will bloom until mid-May .

During Tulip season, you can enjoy a host of events in and around Amsterdam. The main one is Keukenhof Gardens where you can see the most beautiful flower gardens in 2024 from 21 March tm 12 May.
