RALLY EXPLAINER - Choosing a Tripmeter

What is a Tripmeter?

The ability to measure traveled distance accurately, and correlate it with distances in a roadbook is at the heart of Rally Navigation.

A tripmeter at its most basic is simply an adjustable, highly accurate odometer. More advanced features can include measuring speed, providing compass headings for HP/OP sections, providing a clock, stage timer, hour meter for maintenance scheduling, and displaying waypoint information.

How do they work?

There are two main types of tripmeters:

• Wheel Sensor Driven

Wheel sensor tripmeters rely on a micro switch sensor usually placed near a front wheel hub that is triggered by a magnet usually located on a brake rotor. As the magnet passes over the sensor with each revolution of the wheel, a pulse is registered by the tripmeter. This pulse is multiplied by the conversion factor programmed into the tripmeter, and a distance is displayed to the racer. Wheel sensor tripmeters require very little electricity to operate, and can operate for periods without external power. Wheel sensor tripmeters are usually less expensive.

GPS driven tripmeters rely on a GPS antenna to provide course data to the tripmeter. In additional to displaying speed and odometer, GPS driven tripmeters can provide additional functionality like compass (CAP) headings. GPS driven tripmeters do not require the install and routing of a wheel sensor, but will not function without external power. NOTE: Some events such as Dakar or Rebelle restrict the use of GPS devices.

An in-depth discussion of the effective accuracy difference between GPS and Wheel Sensor is here , but for nearly all Rally purposes, we can consider the accuracy between the two to be equal. Nearly all of the (very rare) Tripmeter failures we see are related to cable damage. Both GPS and Wheel Sensor units can be equally reliable with careful install and cable protection.

ICO or RNS?

Since its release in 2017, the ICO MAX series has become the world standard. It’s rare to see a Dakar bike without at least one ICO MAX-2 (Wheel Sensor). The MAX series has a composite case and 25x65mm “Seven Segment” LCD screen (Similar to a digital clock) with bright orange backlight. The MAX-G has an external cabled GPS Antenna. The ICOs are designed and built in the USA.

The RNS GFX series was released in 2020 and is the next generation of Rally Tripmeters. The GFX series has an anodized billet aluminum case, and 35x60mm Transflective HD Graphics 172ppi LCD screen (Similar resolution to a tablet or laptop screen) with a bright blue backlight. This screen allows for the display of multiple data at once, and full text menus.  The Pro model has an internal GPS for durability and simplicity. It also has the capability to connect to an external GPS device to display hidden waypoint arrows similar to an ERTF or RallyComp, which is great for realistic training. The RNS GFX Series is designed and manufactured in Germany.

RaliTripp-S full kit

RaliTripp-S is a GPS based all round clock, stopwatch & trip meter. Utilising many of the functions found in it’s big brother  RaliTripp  but with the addition of an integrated state of the art GPS system.

RaliTripp-S  is an easy to use, but sophisticated, GPS-based modern rally trip meter with multiple trip distance and clock/stopwatch displays shown on a 3.5” colour and touch sensitive TFT display.

The trip meter can be used in two ways:

As a standalone GPS-based trip meter, with a simple installation (i.e. just power) for use in competition and non-competition (e.g. hire/recce) vehicles As a sensor-based trip meter, normally in competition cars, using traditional external wheel/speedo/pulse etc sensors, with manual or automatic switching between the sensors and GPS if, for example, a sensor problem arises or wheelspin is a problem.

General description:

RaliTripp-S has an internal GNSS sensor (detecting and using the American GPS, Russian GLONASS and European GALILEO global navigation satellite constellations simultaneously) that provides trip meter distances. This GNSS sensor allows high accuracy trip meter distances and the full features of RaliTripp-S to be used even though the vehicle installation is trivial – just a power connection is needed.

However, up to 2 traditional external sensors – inductive proximity (e.g. wheel sensors) or pulse (e.g. speedo cable, electronic sensors etc.) or switch sensors (prop shafts etc) – can also be connected. Each external sensor, as well as the internal GNSS sensor, has its own calibration value allowing the unit to be calibrated against an organiser’s trip meter calibration distance.

The sensor used to provide trip meter distances can be selected manually, but RaliTripp-S also has a unique facility that selects the best sensor to use, automatically and without user intervention. Automatic selection can prioritise the use of the GPS sensor or the external sensors to provide trip meter distances.

Additionally, there are 3 options that determine the trip meter distance behaviour when the GPS sensor has been manually selected to provide trip meter distances and there is a “lost fix” e.g. due to entering a tunnel or a very dense wooded area.

RaliTripp-S has 8 main modes, each with a dedicated screen, targeted at a particular type of rally or for different parts of the same rally:

Road – for general road navigation, road sections between ​stages etc Rally – for road rallies Regularity – for regularity rallies or regularity sections in other rallies Jogularity – for jogularity rallies or jogularity sections in other rallies Stage – for stage rallies Due Time – for seeing how early/late it is from a set due time Speed – If required, displays mph or kph Time – for a simple display of rally time.

There is a comprehensive set of easy to use screens to set, for example, rally time, sensor selection and their calibration values, screen features, colours etc.

The external remote switch unit minimises the need to touch RaliTripp-S during competitive sections.

RaliTripp-S cannot display average speed in any way, ensuring it can be used on all competitive events without penalty.

RaliTripp-S is supplied with:

An 8-way pluggable wiring loom, with individual coloured wires An external/internal magnetic mount GNSS antenna to maximise satellite detection/tracking and hence distance accuracy.  The antenna has a fixed 3 metre lead, but extension cables can be used to extend this​. A right angle antenna cable adapter, allowing easier installation when the antenna cable may need to come towards the side of the unit A (pluggable) remote switch unit with a 2 metre lead, allowing most of the RaliTripp-S functionality to be operated without touching the display Aux plug to RaliTripp-S power cable for GPS use without sensor requirement.

Mechanical description

RaliTripp-S features a polypropylene black case with carbon effect front panel having o/a dimensions of 113mm (L) x 59mm (H) x 24mm (D).

There are 2 x M4 rivnuts attached to the rear to aid panel mounting if required Alternatively, mounting can be via velcro pads and/or a windscreen holder found on this website.

In addition, display units can be easily switched between miles and kilometres, or litres and gallons, without requiring a re-calibration—perfect for international events or lease vehicles.

With multiple precision distance counters, built-in stopwatches, clocks*, speed readouts, maximum speed recorder, average speeds* and even a fuel display*, the Monit G-100+ and G-200+ tripmeters are packed with all the features you need to beat your competitors. The G-Series+ also has a user customizable feature display that enables the co-driver, or driver, to display only they information that they require, with un-needed features able to be turned off/on in the menu system, keeping life simple for the team. At Monit, we take careful consideration in design of the G-Series+ UX (User Experience) to methodically examine the customers feature use path, ensuring that the powerful features of our Monit G-Series+ Rally Computers are simply easy-to-use. Further detailed information on G-Series+ features is below. *Feature applies to G-200+ only.

The high-sensitivity GPS/GNSS receiver inside the G-Series+ is built right onto the main circuit board of the tripmeter. This tightly coupled design allows the GPS+ functions to be seamlessly integrated into the product, resulting in better performance and simpler operation compared to an external GPS sensor box. A carefully considered iterative design process was combined with extensive testing to develop this latest evolution of the Monit G-Series. With the Monit GPS/GNSS system using the European Galileo satellites, in conjunction with GPS and GLONASS, it provides the most accurate vehicle-based satellite distance measurement available from a tripmeter. The system also accounts for vertical changes in distance. For the maximum flexibility the G-Series+ can also be run from Speed Sensors.

The Monit G-100+ and G-200+ rally computers are designed using CAD and built with the latest surface mount electronics technology, combined with a light-weight polymer case. These highly integrated design features result in a compact reliable design that is able to withstand the most demanding rally stage, all at less than 30% of the weight of competing products. Monit’s proven reliability is a result of focused attention to design detail, backed with the experience of many World Rally Championship drivers using Monit Rally Computers. Careful industrial design also removed any ‘dead space’ in the rally computer, ensuring that the casing tightly wraps the buttons and display, with the resulting compact design allowing for greater vehicle placement options when space is constrained.

With the Monit G-Series+ rally computer, ease-of-use starts the moment you open the box. Comprehensive instructions, a high-quality wiring loom, and GPS+ technology simplify wiring and reduce the potential for faulty installation. For easy plug-and-play use a quick install kit is available, this is perfect for temporally fitting to recce cars when writing pacenotes, and also for classic and oldtimer vehicles in regularity type events. A range of other high-quality accessories for Monit tripmeters are available to further aid installation into any vehicle. Providing flexibility for competing in events where GPS is not allowed, the Monit G-Series also includes the ability to disable the GPS system completely, allowing it to operate from a speed sensor just like a traditional rally computer.

G-Series+ Features

Easy-to-use powerful features are part of Monit Motorsports DNA. Whether you are competing in club rallies, writing accurate pace notes during recce, racing in the WRC, or competing in classic regularity/oldtimer rallies, the Monit G-Series has you covered.  An overview of Monit G-100+ and G-200+ features follow below.

Accurate Distance Counters.

The two independent five-digit distance counters of the Monit G-100+ and G-200+ rally computers can be quickly set to zero or preset to an initial value using the simple menu system. The counting direction (up or down) can be changed, and the distance adjusted up and down quickly using the foot or hand reset inputs. As the counter value increases the decimal point automatically adjusts to allow measurement of very large distances.

A high-resolution mode is selectable and provides accurate measurement down to the nearest 1m—ideal for road survey work.

Current, Average and Maximum Speed.

A powerful speed measurement system lets you view your current vehicle speed. The system uses an advanced algorithm to produce a highly responsive display that updates rapidly. A handy speed recorder allows you to recall the maximum speed achieved during a stage or rally event.

The Monit G-200+ model adds multiple average speed functions that are perfect for TSD, oldtimer or regularity rally events, or for estimating arrival times during touring stages.

Precision Timing System.

The built-in precision stopwatch removes the need to carry an extra stopwatch around your neck or on the dashboard, further reducing clutter and weight. The handy timer is easy to start, stop and reset, and can also be controlled using a hand or foot-switch for added convenience.

The G-200+ tripmeter model adds an additional stopwatch, as well as a GPS linked time of day clock that is ideal for keeping track of time controls throughout an event. The clock can be easily and quickly set to official rally time using the simple menu system.

Fuel Management System (G-200+ only).

Carefully managing fuel is essential for any professional rally team trying to minimise their vehicle’s weight. The Monit G-200+ rally computer includes a powerful fuel measurement system that is designed specifically for this task. The system can be connected to the output of most factory or aftermarket senders and is easy to calibrate using the simple on-screen instructions. Operation can be in either litres or gallons, and the current fuel level can be shown along with other telemetry data or on a separate full-screen display—perfect for use in the service park.

Hand and Foot-Switch Inputs.

Every Monit G-Series+ tripmeter includes two selectable switch inputs that can used as short-cuts to common tasks. Using the simple menu system different tasks can be assigned to each switch depending on your particular needs.

Selectable options are: Clear Interval counter, Clear Total counter, Freeze the display, Count up/down (reverse counting direction), Pause counters, Adjust Distance Up, Adjust Distance Down, change Display Mode, Backlight Dim, and Stopwatch control. The G200+ also has: Stopwatch 2, and Clear Average Speed

Performance Measurement.

The G-Series+ tripmeters built-in 0-100kph and 0-400m (G-200+ only) sprint timers give you a quick and easy way to assess your vehicle’s performance. These smart timers start automatically when the vehicle begins moving and stop once the target speed, or distance, is achieved.

Speed Alarm (G-200+ only).

An adjustable speed alarm can be activated on the Monit G-200+ model, bringing up an additional menu where you can select the speed to trigger a Monit speed alarm light (see Accessories). Additionally, the output wire for the speed alarm could be wired up to activate an engine rev cut or speed limiter for special events with restricted top speeds.

Special Stage Recorder (G-200+ only).

Making your co-drivers life a lot simpler, this handy special stage recorder is activated via the programmable switch input. This smart feature clears both distance counters and ‘arms’ the stopwatch at the start line, automatically starting special stage timing when the vehicle starts moving – perfect for ensuring your co-driver is distraction free at the rally stage start. On reaching the end the G-200+ rally computer will display and store; stage time, average speed, maximum speed, and distance travelled.

Adjustable GPS Calibration.

Matching the distances measured by event organisers is critical to successful rally navigation, the new G-Series+ allows users to easily adjust the calibration of the Monit tripmeter to exactly match event organisers measured distance even while running in GPS only mode.

Simple straight forward calibration of wheel and speed sensors is retained with the Monit rally computer calibration wizard, and the easy-to-use menu allows viewing and editing the automatically calculated calibration number if desired.

G-Series+ Models

Able to run from speed sensors, or the built-in precision GNSS, the Monit G-Series+ offers unrivalled accuracy and ease-of-use. The precise GPS/GNSS system uses GPS, GLONASS and Galileo satellite systems and coupled with an external antenna for maximum sensitivity. Antennas and Speed Sensors are purchased separately.

Former Southampton water official admits to ethics violations for accepting ski trip, golf outing

The former Water Department superintendent in Southampton, Massachusetts, has admitted to violating the state’s conflict of interest law after he accepted valuable gifts, including a free ski trip, from the companies that provide the town with its water meters.

In a disposition agreement the state’s Ethics Commission released Monday, Thomas Gaughan admitted that an unnamed Alabama-based water-meter manufacturer and its New England distributor paid for lodging and meal costs for him and his spouse to go on a three-day ski trip to Okemo, Vermont, in 2020. The vendors, which Southampton has used for its water meters since 2004, also paid for Gaughan's greens fees and meals at a golf outing that same year, according to the records. He paid a $6,000 civil penalty for the violations.

Gaughan served as the town's Water Department superintendent — a position that has purchasing authority for water meters but requires authorization for major water projects from an elected Board of Water Commissioners — from 2015 until his retirement last September. Efforts to reach Gaughan were unsuccessful Tuesday. Southampton’s current water superintendent did not respond to an email requesting comment.

The charges against Gaughan are just the latest in a string of cases that the Ethics Commission has brought against leaders of municipal water districts and officials in departments of public works across the state.

On Monday, the Ethics Commission also announced that three other officials admitted to similar charges in Sudbury, Salem and Danvers. They had accepted ski trips, tickets to Boston Red Sox and Celtics games, dinners, drinks and golf trips from the same water-meter distributor, which the Ethics Commission has declined to name. The officials ended up paying civil fines ranging from $8,000 to $18,000.

In February, the DPW director in Franklin admitted to accepting free ski trips from the same vendors, ultimately paying a $15,000 fine. Then, the following month, an employee in Natick's Water and Sewer Department paid a $9,000 penalty for accepting free ski trips and means from the companies.

The company dolled out some of those perks outside of water-industry conferences, according to the Ethics Commission. The ski trip that Gaughan attended brought together public water-district and DPW employees, the vendors, their clients and other guests.

Ethics Commission Public Information Officer Gerry Tuoti said that the commission hasn’t taken action against the companies and, for that reason, hasn’t released their names. Tuoti declined to say how the cases came to the commission’s attention.

Geoff Foster, the executive director of the good-government watchdog group Common Cause Massachusetts, said in a phone interview Tuesday that he’s pleased to see that the Ethics Commission took action against the public officials who took gifts from the company.

"Our state law clearly prohibits a municipal employee from soliciting or receiving anything over $50 in value because of the employee's official position,” he said. “And municipal employees are even regularly trained on the law."

Foster said that law is meant to ensure public trust in public employees to make sure that they are serving the public interest without any undue influence from outside parties. And he is pleased to see that the Ethics Commission levied fines that appeared to cost more than the financial gain the officials received – a pattern Common Cause hopes continues to deter wrongdoing by others.

“It’s really important that the Ethics Commission impose financial penalties that show that there's more to lose than to gain by breaking the public trust in Massachusetts,” Foster said. “And we hope these cases send a really clear message, whether it be to municipal employees or outside entities looking to influence municipal employees, as we move forward.”

Entertainment Tonight ran a new report yesterday about their weekend in Vegas. A source said that on Friday night, they went to Easy’s Cocktail Lounge inside the ARIA Resort and Casino. “The pair kept a low profile as they held hands and danced to various hits, including a few of Taylor’s that were played inside,” the insider said. “The two didn’t leave each other’s side, and were seen with smiles on their faces.”

Saturday was the gala. On Sunday, Kelce participated in a golf tournament. Fans speculated that Swift joined him on the green , as a blonde woman in a blue dress was spotted in a video posted from the event.

Swift’s weekend trip comes as her Eras Tour break wraps up. Swift will start her European shows on May 9 in Paris. Kelce confirmed that he will be traveling with his girlfriend for some of them.

“She’ll be all over Europe,” Kelce told Entertainment Tonight in early April. “There won’t be a bad show, I promise you that.” As for him attending some? “Oh, you know I gotta go support,” he said. “You know it.”
