Mirage 1 Nile Cruise from South Sinai Group

The boat was not a "5" star. There were serious concerns in regard to safety in case of an emergency because we didn't see any safety notices or directions given to guests. We didn't see any life jackets on board so we were a little concerned. There are absolutely no wifi connections and even after we purchased 30 mins segments for $25 USD which was a rip-off, the connection was very poor to none. Staff spoke no English except for one or two staff at the front desk. Communication was very difficult. Our tour guide was amazing and very knowledgeable but he was not cruise staff. This cruise was supposed to be all-inclusive (including wifi, tips and soft drinks & water) but we were not allowed to take our own water bottle in the dining room. We had to purchase drinks and water from the bar which was 2 floors above to drink in the dining room or drink in the bar only. No drinks were allowed in rooms. Tea and coffee were served at breakfast and then again at 4 pm on the upper deck which was a pleasant relief after a long day without any caffeine. A bottle of water on the boat was around 10 Egyptian Pounds (EP) when the same bottle was 2 (EP) outside around docking area in Luxor, Edfu etc. The most frustrating and horrible experience was when they would not provide hot/warm water when we arrived. We were told to go upstairs to the bar to get the water and we went several times but there was no staff. Eventually, after 10:30 pm, there were 2 staff members behind the counter and we asked for hot water. They refused. They said that there was no hot water. We told them that we would pay for the water and all they have to do is heat some water in the kettle that was sitting on the counter. My wife had a severe cough. They were unwilling and said they must get permission from the cruise manager. I agreed and told them that I would speak to their manager. The manager was nowhere to be found. Then back to the bar and another staff " bar manager" again refused to give us hot/warm water so I gave them my bottle of water and asked them to pour it into the kettle and plug it in. After some heated discussion, they finally did plug in the kettle (oh btw, they did rinse the kettle before pouring my water) and I was able to get the warm water. When discussing this situation with other guests, we came to understand that the staff members were expecting a "bakshish" (i.e. a bribe) from us for the service and we had to pay before they could serve us. This was surprising. The shower head in our bathroom broke while showering and housekeeping were very good & efficient at replacing it. Food in the dining room was good and the cook made some spicy dishes upon request from our group members. Main dish variety was limited but overall food was tasty and delicious. Poor cleaning service – The bathroom tub, floor, and sink was not cleaned for the duration we stayed there. There was hair on the floor, tub, and sink. Overall, we found Egyptians wanted to rip us off in everything we purchased, and in every possible way, they can. They lied about the perfumes, papyrus paper, carpets etc. Don’t ever go to the factories where they make these things (or that’s what they say). It’s all a scam. We bought perfume – small bottles and when we got back home the scent in 2 out of the 3 bottles of perfumes had disappeared. It was literally flavored water. Don't purchase gold/silver jewelry because they were a scam. The jewelry turned dark grey/black after some time. It is also very expensive comparatively.

Booked a 14 night trip with Going Luxury. 7 nights cruise down The Nile and 7 nights in the Grand Plaza Hotel on the Red Sea. We were on the SS Commodore sailing from Luxor to Aswan taking in temples and tombs on the way. You do get up about 6.15 am to get to the temples but this avoids the crowds so well worth it. The boat was really nice although some people complained that it wasn't luxurious enough. We thought it was absolutely fine. Food in the restaurant was fantastic with a great deal of choice for each meal. It was all inclusive except for drinks. We were offered a package that incuded drinks for £30per person per day. I would suggest that you don't pay this unless you are a very heavy drinker. We paid as we went along and the total bar bill at the end of the week was £194 for the 2 of us. Bottle of wine with the evening meal was 300 eygptian pounds which was about £12. large bottle of the local Stella and a rum and coke was about £7 which was much cheaper than I thought it would be. Large bottle of water was only about 90p. We also paid for the full package of excursions which I would recommend. However we paid £190 with our booking but on the boat the same package was offered for £150!! River trip was fantastic with lots of WOW sights. When we got back to Luxor, instead of having the 5 hour journey back to Hurghada and the Grand Plaza we paid £190 each for a flight to Cairo for the day and then the flight to Hurghada at the end of the day. I thought at first it was a lot to pay but what a wonderful day we had. Only 3 of us with a great English speaking guide called Max. He met us a 7am at Cairo airport and was with us for 12 hours. We did have to get up at 3.15 am on the boat to be taken to Luxor airport but it was worth it. We were taken to the museum in Cairo and he gave us a great tour. Then to the pyramids which was another wow experience. We had lunch there followed by a visit to the sphynx. Then finally we walked through Old Cairo and had turkish coffee sat in a egyptian cafe in the main street. Absolutely amazing experience. If you can afford it it is well worth the money. We did pay £25 each for the sound and light show at the Karnak temple but this was poor and certainly not worth the money. Something that is worth missing. Finally a couple of tips: The visa to get into the country, at the airport, costs $25 but they still charged us £25 when we were expecting £20. I suspect they pocketed to extra £5 Be prepared for hassle wherever you walk from people selling goods .They don't know when to stop so the secret seems to be not to make eye contact and just keep walking. You are also expected to barter for everything so the first price quoted is never the final price. We are not very good at this but I suspect those who are can knock the price down a long way. Take sterling and change to egyptian pounds as you go along. The hotels have change machines in reception which takes currency or cards. They give a very good rate of exchange All in all though a fantastic experience and we saw sights we never dreamed we would. Lots of security but never felt unsafe. Great weather with clear blue skies every day and a temperature of about 24 degrees which was really nice. So glad we went and a holiday to remember forever.

Just returned from 7 day cruise and it was superb. The boat may be old but is well maintained and very clean. the cabins are small but compact and have everything necessary. the food is god, with good range and the crew are superb-they cannot do enough for you

There is absolutely nothing like this divine boat on the Nile! Old world glamour and service, mixed with history and 65 staff to care for 40 guests is the very definition of 5 star. The furnishings, care and attention, food and attention to detail with every single aspect of the cruise leaves you speechless. We went from Luxor to Aswan (5D/4N) and could not recommend the Sudan highly enough! It is a once in a lifetime type of experience in every way.

A Nile cruise seems to be one of the requirements of a trip to Egypt, and the views while cruising are wonderful. We were on the Movenpick SS Princess Lily, which we would recommend as a choice. However, when you get to Luxor, boats have to tie up abreast, so most often no view. Just be ready for that negative. Otherwise, boat was fine... clean with accommodating staff. Food was generally buffet with lots of choices. Room was nice size, with good sized bathroom, and clean; just tired carpeting. I think if I were doing this trip again, I might just stay in Luxor and do day trips. However, if you want to experience Nile, this ship would be good choice.

We spent seven days on the Steigenberger Legacy. The boat is, as far as I could tell, the best on the river. It takes 120 passengers and has a crew of 90. Due to the down turn in tourism to Egypt there were only 25 passengers initially. We booked through Discover Egypt. So, the boat was immaculately clean, the food excellent (all buffet) and the rooms larger and far more comfortable than expected. If you can ask for a room on the port side, you'll see a lot more when moored up. The staff are as helpful as Amy I've seen and nothing is too much trouble. You're room is cleaned every day and tidied twice a day. We were given a tour of the kitchens which again were immaculate. I'm vegetarian and the selection was as good as I've seen anywhere with different meals nearly every day. Sitting on the deck of an evening is just decadent and so good. We had an amazing tour guide, Eesam, really knew his stuff and loved to pass on his knowledge. We saw the valley of the kings kom ombo temple of hatshepsut (my favourite Egyptian queen/king) philae both day and night (truly lovely) we visited a Nubian village handled crocodiles and had a trip on a felluca. Went to Aswan and wandered around the most amazing sites. If you can do this trip it really is the trip of a lifetime. I can't speak for the other guides but can honestly say I have never seen better at any location. We booked through Discover Egypt and I would do exactly the same trip again, am seriously contemplating doing so. So much to see and do, just wish it had been longer. Oh go inclusive of drinks it's worth it even if you don't drink a lot and choose the Omar Khyyamm wine, very pleasant.

accomplish that exactly. Furthermore, there is no better way then to leisurely view the countryside, watching many of the farmers go about their work still using ancient traditions and tools and seeing the small village that are not so unlike those of millenniums ago, perhaps while you laze about in a top deck pool with a cool drink in your hand. However, we should also provide a few notes about Nile cruises. First, Cruises do not originate from Cairo , and one must almost always spend at least one night in that city prior to the cruise. The cruise ships are usually boarded in either Aswan or Luxor , and the shorter cruises travel between those two cities, while the longer cruises extend a bit north of Luxor to key temples. No cruises go as far as Cairo, and it is impossible to travel south from Aswan. To get to the cruise ships, one must either fly, or take the train to Upper Egypt (buses are an unusual choice). In order to travel south to the Nubian temples such as Abu Simbel , one must either fly, take a bus in some instances, or transfer to a Lake Nasser Ship.We have written several stories on Nile cruisers over the years, including " Cruising the Nile ", " Love on the Nile " and " Nile Cruises ", but in this article we wish to explore one Nile Cruiser in detail. The Mirage is a brand new Nile cruiser built by South Sinai Travel, a company who's hotels we have found to be of consistently good quality. Their Basma hotel in Aswan is a favorite among many travelers and tour operators, and their other hotels in Hurghada and Sharm reflect the same sort of attention to their customer's needs and comforts.

The Mirage is a medium sized boat with the latest conveniences, as well as safety gear. Many of the Nile cruisers still carry water buckets for each room, but the Mirage has modern detectors and a sprinkler system. Furthermore, water, when taken onboard, travels through seven filtration systems, including one which radiates the water with ultraviolet light. However, the water goes through three more filtration systems, including a second ultraviolet filter prior to actually arriving at the cabins. While Nile cruiser rooms are generally not as large as regular hotel rooms, the standard cabins on this cruiser, unlike some we have seen, are at least large enough to afford the addition of a sitting area with a table and chairs. In fact, the standard rooms on this boat are currently the largest of any cruiser on the Nile, measuring some 23 square meters. Simply put, most Nile cruisers do not expect their passengers to spend much time in their cabins, but these rooms present an entirely different aspect of Nile cruising with their

comfortable size and amenities. There are also two suites available.

Above and Below: A view of a standard cabin Bottom: A standard W/C (bath)

Each standard room is equipped with a full bath, also unlike many Nile cruisers that only have a shower, hair dryers, mini-friges and telephones with international access. Satellite color televisions and radios provide in-cabin entertainment, including a set of multi-lingual movies each day. Video movies are also available.

Above: The dinner buffet area Below: Part of the evening buffet

Like a small but well equipped hotel, the Mirage has all you might expect from a five star hotel. The upper deck provides a small swimming pool from which the shore may easily be seen, shaded and un-shaded lounge areas, and even a fairly well equipped exercise area. Along with rooms, the next lower deck also supports a large bar and entertainment area. This is where many of the boat's shows take place, along with dancing and other recreation. This deck also provides several stores where both necessities such as cigarettes and other goods may be found, including some clothing. What surprised me about this was that the price of these items was very reasonable.

Above: The Mira ge has a good assortment of exercise equipment

The next deck down is houses the lobby area for the boat, and entrance to it is made on this level, and below that is the large restaurant. We should also mention that there is considerable attention to the design detail on this ship. It is beautifully done, and here and there surprising pieces of original works by well known Egyptian artists adorn the corridors. This boat is typically booked as all inclusive, meaning that food and alcoholic beverages are available without further cost. Having been on a number of inclusive trips, I am always pleasantly surprised by the quality, as well as the quantity of the all inclusive menu, both on this boat and in the other South Sinai facilities.

The bar and entertainment area

Since there are no permits being allowed in Egypt for the construction of new river cruisers at this time, the Mirage will probably remain one of the best cruisers for sometime. Luckily, the management has a superior reputation for facility maintenance. While their are certainly many other fine Nile cruisers, the Mirage must be counted among the best that today ply this grand river which so long ago, spawned the origins of our modern civilization.

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-04-07 13:55

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.

25 Places to Visit in Moscow you Can’t Miss

25 Places to Visit in Moscow

Do you know what the most populous city in Europe is? Most people wouldn’t guess that it is actually Moscow. There are approximately 13 million people in the Moscow metro area, which amounts to approximately 1/10th of all Russians.

This former capitol of the Soviet Union is still the political and financial center of Russia. Just because it is a current business and government city, in no way means that it is boring and not worth a visit. Assuming the political tensions get solved, Moscow is a fascinating city you need to visit.

While lots of people can’t explain the nuances of Russian architecture, most can spot and appreciate it immediately. One of the best ways to see the historic sites is by taking a boat tour down the Moskva River that meanders through the city.

Overall, navigating the city isn’t difficult as there is phenomenal and cheap public transportation (roughly 30 rubles/35 cents per ride). You can also use a cheap Uber on the three ring roads that circle the city at various distances from the center.

Still wondering why you should visit this historic masterpiece of a city? Read on to see the top 25 things you need to see in Moscow.

The House with Animals

The animal house in Moscow Russia

This former church is famous for the terracotta reliefs of animals that adorn the front of the building. It is a favorite of locals, and famous around the world. It was built in approximately 1900.

Resurrection Gate or Iberian Gate and Chapel

The resurrection gate at the entrance to Red square.

The Resurrection Gate is now one of the most common ways to enter Red Square. This gate is also the only standing part of the wall that was the entrance to to Kitai-Gorod, or Moscow’s historic central business district.

St. Basils Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow Russia.

Probably the most famous of the Red Square attractions is St. Basil’s Cathedral. I don’t know if the legend is true or not, but supposedly Tsar Ivan IV poked the eyes of the architect out after completing it so nothing as pretty could be made again. What an awful boss!

The State Historical Museum

If you are like me then you can’t help but find all the twists and turns of Russian history fascinating. The State Historical Museum at Red Square is a fantastic place to learn and study the Russian Relics.

Moscow River Cruise

Moscow river cruise

The Moskva River cuts directly through the heart of Moscow. Want to see it all but rest your feet? One of the best things to do in Moscow at night is float along on a dinner cruise . The lights of the city are so beautiful. Of course, dinner in included.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

Machines in Museum of Soviet arcade machines

This is one of the most unique things to do in Moscow. If you know that many American video games paint the Russians as the bad guys, then it’s probably not surprising to learn that you can find an entirely different variety of video games in Russia. This isn’t a recent phenomenon; even historically the video games were different. If you are a video game buff then this stop is for you!

Main Church of the Armed Forces in Park Patriot near Kubinka

Main Church of the Armed Forces in Park Patriot

This church attempts to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ as well as Russian military leader. Yes, it’s an awkward amalgamation. It caused quite a controversy when there were plans to create murals of Vladimir Putin and Joseph Stalin to go along with the ones of Jesus Christ (those plans were scrapped).

Bunker 42 (Cold War Museum)

Meeting room in Bunker 42 Museum of the Cold War - military history museum.

Tunnel at Bunker-42, anti-nuclear underground facility built in 1956 as command post of strategic nuclear forces of Soviet Union.

Americans weren’t the only ones afraid during the Cold War! You can now discover the most secret and secure Bunker of the USSR, Bunker 42. Also known as the Cold War Museum . This former military communication center is now a museum. I recommend this tour that will take you on a private two hour visit of Bunker 42.

If you aren’t interested in a guided tour you can book your tickets in advance here.

Tank Excursion and Bazooka Shooting in Moscow

The main Soviet tank of the Second World War

For real – you can book this tour and actually ride in a tank and shoot off military grade weapons. While that’s not my cup of tea, I know tons of guys would absolutely love to shoot a bazooka!

Dormition Cathedral

Dormition Cathedral Moscow

This is another Russian Orthodox cathedral that is located inside the Moscow Kremlin. It is another famous landmark of Moscow. The inside is decorated with ancient frescoes.

The Cathedral of the icon of the Mother of God “Sign”

Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God of the Sign in the Moscow park Zaryadye

This cathedral is located in Zaryadye Park (adjacent to Red Square). It is also on the Moskva River. The Cathedral of the icon of the Mother of God “Sign” previously was a monastery.

Komsomolskaya Metro station

Komsomolskaya Metro station in Moscow.

So many of the metro stations are breathtaking works of art. The idea was to create something beautiful that all the regular people could enjoy, or if you are more cynical you could say it was to attempt to show off how well they were doing.

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Stree t

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street Moscow

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street look super cool and futuristic, except like many communist projects didn’t actually work that well. They were supposed to be something new and different from the standard “Soviet Blocks.”

There are a number of problems with this design. Supposedly the acoustics are awful making the apartments perpetually noisy. The inner circle becomes a wind chamber even when it’s not that windy. My favorite weakness is that the trapezoid shape of apartments is hard to decorate and even harder to do maintenance on.

Izmailovo District and Izmailovo Kremlin

Izmailovo Kremlin In The Center Of

This area has to be one of the coolest places to visit in Moscow. It features a park in the middle of Moscow that is over 3x the size of New York City’s Central Park. The Kremlin in Izmailovo is a complex located in the Eastern Administrative District of Moscow that is known as the center of culture and entertainment. The wooden buildings are in Russian architecture of the XVI-XVII centuries (not original).

Tretyakov Gallery

retyakov State Gallery In Moscow

For those that appreciate fine art this is where you have to go. The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow Russia is the best collection of Russian fine art in the world. The museum previously hosted worldwide chess tournaments (I can’t help be think of the Queen’s Gambit).

Book your tickets in advance here. Tickets cost about $13 per person.

Kolomenskoe Estate

Kolomenskoe Estate in Moscow Russia

This reconstruction of a former royal estate is just a few miles southeast of the Moscow city center. Supposedly really detailed historical plans survived, so the reconstruction and current museum is incredibly authentic. It was completed in 2010.

Old buildings of Arbat

Old buildings of Arbat Moscow Russia

Arbat is an old street, and was previously the “nicest place to live in Moscow. Even though it fell into disrepair, it’s location, it’s historical buildings, and the fact that it is a pedestrian street are quickly making it a top place to live again.

The Melnikov House

Famous house of architect Melnikov on Arbat street in Moscow Russia

Located on Arbat street, the Famous house of architect Melnikov designed this house (and Lenin’s sarcophagus). Melnikov designed it at a time when private ownership was outlawed, but got around this restriction by saying it was an experimental design to maximize space. Even though others weren’t built, he was able to keep it.

The New Maiden Convent

The New Maiden Convent, built was built to resemble a mini-Kremlin. It stands out to me because this “convent” was the place where women who were no longer welcome in the royal court were banished to.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark.

The Americans may have made it to the moon first, but the Russian cosmonauts were first in a number of other achievements. This gigantic obelisk pays homage to their accomplishments.

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve

mirage nile cruise

This royal estate was founded by Catherine the Great. She was Russia’s longest serving female leader. It is now a gorgeous museum!

Stalinist Skyscraper tour

Stalinist Skyscrapers called The Seven Sisters

This group of seven skyscrapers are called the Seven Sisters. They were all made in the Stalinist style, and one was previously the tallest building in Europe. If you want to tour them all while learning about their history book here .

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow

It’s ironic that a country that was so anti-religion for so long has so many great churches. The Cathedral for Christ the Savior was made to thank Jesus for saving Russia. If you are interested in visiting this and so many other cathedrals in Moscow I recommend this tour that will take you to The Cathedral of Christ the Savior many other popular churches in Moscow.

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Red Square Moscow

This church on Red Square is reconstruction of what was previously there but ordered to be destroy by Joseph Stalin. It is a travesty thinking of all the beautiful things that Stalin destroyed to attempt to implement his vision.

Zaryade Park

glass dome in Zaryadye Park in Moscow

Zaryadye Park is one of the main tourist attractions in Moscow. It is located directly next to the Kremlin, and offers truly amazing views. It is also famous for its “floating bridge” and the fact that there are so many unique features underneath it.

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya church

The Church of the Theotokos of the Sign (Dubrovitsy), or The Church of the Holy Sign of the Mother of God is located in a village amed Dubrovitsy about 20 miles south of Moscow. It is another Russian Orthodox church, but what makes this one unique is that we aren’t 100% sure who made it, or why is has a style that is completely different than other churches of the time.

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker on Bersenevka in Moscow.

I love the unique style of the Russian Orthodox churches in Moscow. The golden onion domes stand out across the globe. This church dates back to 1657, though it has been partially destroyed a few times since then.

Moscow University

Moscow University in Russia

Moscow University is one of the Seven Sisters that are the “Stalin Skyscrapers.” Previously it was the tallest building in Europe. Though it has lost that title, it is still the tallest “educational building” in the world.

So what do you think? Next trip to Moscow?
