Oceania Cruises ’ tagline – “the finest cuisine at sea” is a big promise and one that its crew strive to make good on each and every day across the fleet. We are a couple foodies and we have had no complaints, though we might quibble a bit here and there about if a certain dish is the finest at sea .

DIETARY RESTRICTIONS

It’s at this point that I need to mention that my wife Melanie and I are both Gluten Free (GF), though for different reasons. All of our food photos in this and any other of my posts are of the GF options and may not reflect what other passengers receive when ordering the same dishes.

For those with dietary restrictions please continue to read the next few paragraphs as this is for you.  For those blessed to be able to eat anything (I used to be one of you), feel free to skip ahead.  I’d like to share a few things about how Oceania Cruises handles dietary restrictions.

Pre-Cruise – Approximately 30 days prior to your cruise you are asked to notify Oceania Cruises of any dietary restrictions. You can do this through your travel advisor or through an email address provided in your pre-cruise packet.  There is no “form” per se; so you are left to describe your dining limitations as you see fit (I suggest being brief but specific).  One other thing to note – our travel advisor informed us that Oceania Cruises now stores your dietary restrictions in your profile, so there is no need to notify them for each cruise unless there has been a change.

On-Board – In your welcome on board paperwork you will have a letter from the culinary team acknowledging and re-stating your dietary restrictions.  If they failed to have captured any details or if you simply want to talk through any specifics they provide instructions for meeting with them in person.

Warning – just because you’ve notified Oceania Cruises of your dietary restrictions it doesn’t mean that you will not come in contact with things that you cannot eat while on board.  In fact, there might be a welcome gift waiting that may not be suitable.  On our past few voyages we received a welcome plate with some petit fours in our room.  Two of these were GF while two were not, some contained nuts and dairy for those with other restrictions.  The reason that we received these is that it is a standard welcome plate put in all of the suites, not taking into account dietary restrictions.  Similarly, the afternoon canape menu for suite passengers includes a number of items that were not GF.  Our butler advised us and also let us know that a few of them he could make GF for us; but to check with him as he wasn’t always on duty in the afternoons and the one preparing and delivering the canapes.

a plate of sushi and chicken wings on a marble table

Each morning, those with dietary restrictions will receive a menu for dinner the following night.  So, for example, on a Monday morning you will receive a printed dinner menu for Tuesday night based on your reservations or in the Grand Dining Room (Oceania’s name for the main dining room on their ships) if you do not have any reservations for that next evening.  You are to mark those items that you would like to have for dinner and the culinary team takes care of the rest to make sure it meets your needs.  On Vista, they requested that we turn these menus in by mid-morning at the Concierge Desk by reception and the shops.  On other ships they asked that we turn them in to the host stand in Grand Dining Room.  For embarkation day you will not have a menu turned in and as such we typically go to the Grand Dining Room and order carefully letting our waiter know about our restrictions.

One of the perks of being in a Penthouse Suite and above is having the services of a butler. I’ve already noted that your butler delivers your choice of canapes each afternoon. Another handy service your butler can provide is to return your menu selections each day.

A quick note for vegetarians and vegans.  Oceania Cruises generally has a decent selection of menu items as well as items on the buffet for you.  There is no need to submit a Dietary Restriction note unless you have additional restrictions.

Now having covered dietary restrictions on Oceania Cruises, on with the fun stuff, the food.

NO CHARGE SPECIALTY DINING

Following we’ve provided an overview of the nine plus dining venues included in cruise fares.  There are no additional charges for dining in any of the six specialty restaurants on board.  There is one catch – depending on level of cabin/suite as well as the length of cruise, passengers are limited to the number of reservations allowed at each of the specialty dining restaurants.

Specialty dining reservations can be made on board, but Oceania Cruises also allows you to make them online in advance of your cruise.  Again level of cabin plays in here with the top suites getting the earliest access to reservations, followed by Penthouses, then Concierge Staterooms, and finally they are opened to all passengers.  Experienced Oceania cruisers know to set a calendar reminder and log in on the first available day to book your reservations, particularly if you want to select tables for two or eat on the earlier side as these reservations typically book first.

There are wine tastings, a new seated wine lunch at Ember introduced on Vista, as well as La Reserve wine dinners on Riviera and Marina, all of which come with additional charges, but the vast majority of passengers stick with the included dining.

We made a point to try every restaurant on board over the course of our 12-night cruise.  We’ll start with the non-specialty venues that do not require reservations.

GRAND DINING ROOM

a room with tables and chairs

Oceania Cruises has named their Main Dining Rooms (“MDRs” for those Frequent Floaters) across the fleet the Grand Dining Room.  The elegant dining rooms on board the oldest and smallest R-Class ships are tasteful and feel very much like a dining room at a country club, fitting in the with line’s country club casual dress code.  With the commissioned O-Class ships – Marina and Riviera, they took it to the next level creating more ceiling height, bigger windows including huge windows overlooking the aft wake, and a central Captain’s table with stunning lighting.  While lighter, brighter, and more voluminous than the R-Class Grand Dining Rooms the brand ethos was still present.  Vista has taken it to a whole new place and that place is very glamorous with an art deco influence with lots of faceted glass walls, custom gold and crystal lighting, and beautiful furnishings.  There are nods to the R-Class, but this feels more luxurious and could easily be mistaken for a MDR on a luxury ship like Regent Seven Seas .

The Grand Dining Room is open for breakfast and dinner every day as well as lunch on most sea days and does not require a reservation.  There is a set menu that repeats every day as well as a generous list of daily specials.  These specials often feature dishes by Jacques Pepin a long-time collaborator with Oceania cruises and force behind Jacques on board the R-Class ships.  By far the favorite specialty restaurant amongst guests is Red Ginger and there are always specials featuring dishes from their menu.  Finally, there are Aquamar Vitality dishes featuring lighter starters, salads, and entrees many of which feature vegetables and fish as the stars.

a bowl of soup with a piece of bread on a plate

For us, dinner in the Grand Dining room is always pleasant, but not overly memorable.  I would suggest not arriving in the first 30 minutes after they open as a small line can form, but it never lasts long.  The move, in our opinion, is going for breakfast on sea days as well as disembarkation days and enjoying a big hearty breakfast including my favorite lamb-chops and herb omelet with GF toast.  This is also a nice option if you’ve made friends on the cruise and want to dine together without having to rearrange specialty restaurant reservations.

TERRACE CAFÉ

For most passengers the Terrace Café located on Deck 12, the buffet venue onboard all Oceania Cruises ships, will be your first dining experience on board shortly after embarkation.  Located high at the back of the ships, it offers both indoor and outdoor seating.  The outdoor seating is mostly covered by an overhang as well as umbrellas.

Shaped like a “U” the buffet is set up in the center with roughly the same set-up on both sides.  There are cooked to order stations serving egg dishes in the mornings, burgers and hot sandwiches at lunch, and steaks, lobster tails, and fish in the evenings.  A wide assortment of fruits, cheeses, and cured meats at all meals.  Yoghurts, cereals, and toppings in the mornings make way for a salad bar in the evenings.  There are carving stations at both lunch and dinner with different options on either side.  In the evenings there are also made to order pasta stations.  Sweets and baked goods are available at all meals and catering to all tastes including sugar-free options and limited GF choices.  Unlike some larger cruise ships, Terrace Café is only open for specific windows for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is closed in between these times.

WAVES GRILL

Located in a sheltered location outside on Deck 12 between Terrace Café and the pool is Waves Grill, our favorite spot for quick lunches al fresco, particularly when getting back from a morning excursion.  It offers hot breakfast staples as well as a limited selection of cereal, fruit, and yoghurt in the mornings along with made-to-order smoothies in the mornings.  It’s open for an extended period at lunch serving burgers, hot dogs, grilled entrees including my favorite – mahi mahi (GF!). The burger selection offers something for nearly everyone including veggie burgers, salmon, and Wagu if you’re feeling a bit gluttonous. The French fries are not to be missed.  There are also malts and milkshakes on order as well as ice cream; however, we almost never make it that far.

Something new to Vista is the addition of pizza ovens in Waves Grill.  You can eat here in the evenings and enjoy a selection of pizzas (sadly no GF crust on our cruise), burrata covered in a selection of toppings, as well as a sweet Nutella pizza for dessert.  You can also order the pizzas to go and eat them in Terrace Café and those in suites can have them delivered by your butler.

This is a tough one for me to review impartially as there was precious little on their breakfast, lunch, or dinner menus that I could eat based on my dietary restrictions (GF and allergic to avocado).  The space on Deck 12 on the opposite side of Waves Grill is beautiful and arguably a better use of space than the La Reserves located in the same location aboard the R-Class ships that are woefully underutilized, but I just didn’t like what little I could possibly eat.  During breakfast in the space we saw a number of our fellow passengers look at the menus and then get up and leave.  Some came back with “supplemental” food from Waves Grill or Terrace Café while others had clearly moved-on for good.  The name Aquamar is a reference to Oceania Cruises onboard spas with the same moniker.  The intent is to appeal to health-conscious passengers including the highly coveted younger demographic that Aquamar, Founder’s Bar, and other enhancements seem to be catering to.  We like to think of ourselves as healthy and young-ish (mid-40s and a good bit younger than average on board), but one visit on our cruise was enough.

BARISTAS AND BAKERY BY BARISTAS

I was torn whether to include Baristas as a bar or a restaurant for this review.  On previous ships and sailings I would say it falls squarely in the bar category serving coffee in the mornings and coffee drinks and aperitivos the rest of the day; however, onboard Vista and located next to a new bakery, the food offerings have moved it into the restaurant category for us.

Baristas sits near the top of the ship on Deck 14 in the middle overlooking the pool deck adjacent to the ship’s beautiful library and new bakery is the coffee bar all day and an Italian cocktail lounge in the late afternoons and evenings.  Serving free, yes FREE, Illy espresso, lattes, macchiatos, and frozen cremas. The coffee is the best available anywhere onboard.  We make a point to detour every morning on our way to or from breakfast to get takeaway coffee beverages (trust us the coffee in all of the other breakfast locations is average at best and below Oceania Cruises standards).  We’ve come to know many of the baristas from prior sailings and it’s always nice to chat with them while our espresso based drinks are made.

a cup of coffee on a table

In the afternoons and evenings there are worse ideas than enjoying the addition of a liquor to your coffee (at a charge or included in your optional beverage package) while enjoying the all-day snacks offered on the “mini-buffet.” For those limiting their caffeine intake in the evening hours there are the Italian classic spirits and drinks.  While not on the menu I recommend, and they’ll gladly serve you, a limoncello spritz.  I also highly recommended their negronis.

You can sit in the swanky lounge all day and watch a pastry chef or two craft beautiful pastries that can be sampled on site, while still warm!  Sadly, on most days there were no GF options; however, on a couple of occasions GF macarons and meringues were on offer and were delicious.

a restaurant with tables and chairs

Perhaps the biggest gamble Oceania Cruises took on the new Vista was replacing Jacques’ with the new Ember restaurant on Deck 5.  Like the restaurant it replaced, Ember is a specialty restaurant and requires a reservation.  Let’s start with the positive – the restaurant is beautiful and different than anything Oceania Cruises has throughout the fleet.  Like the menu, the décor is distinctly American.  I would liken both décor and menu to Hillstone, Houston’s, or J Alexander’s for those familiar with any of these upscale chains.  This was by far the most controversial venue on the ship when talking to our fellow passengers.

We generally found the most tenured Oceania Cruises passengers to be the most skeptical of Ember noting that it’s loud due to the open kitchen and lack of soft furnishings and carpet, that it feels rushed, and that the food isn’t up to the same standards as the other specialty restaurants.

a collage of food on a table

While we enjoyed our dinner at Ember, we had a secluded table by the window making for a relatively peaceful dining experience – others were not so lucky.  We enjoyed the spinach and artichoke dip starter and kale chicken salad, though neither was unique.  My bone-in tomahawk was delicious though the potato side was forgetable.  Melanie had a filet, baked potato, and corn on the cob, which was good, but didn’t really clear the Finest Cuisine at Sea bar.  Our server insisted that we try a dessert so we enjoyed the fresh berries and cream which was good and not overly heavy.

If Ember is a new-style steakhouse, Polo Grill is the old standard in the fleet.  On most ships it has the most traditional, country club, horse and hound look to it, but on Vista it too has received a glamorous new look.  We were fortunate to be able to dine here twice, once through our pre-booked reservation and a second time because of a mix-up with our dietary restricted menus.  While they had no record of our reservation they had received our marked-up menus and our excellent butler made sure we were able to get in at our desired time.  Both meals were what we’ve come to expect at Polo Grill which is a decadent, meat-centric meal, paired with great wine, enjoyed at a leisurely pace served by a great wait staff.  I would note that they have a good number of seafood selections for those non-steak lovers.

a plate of food on a table

Toscana is Oceania’s Italian restaurant onboard Vista as it is on all but one of the other ships in the fleet. On Sirena only, Polo Grill and Toscana have been merged to create Tuscan Steak, making room for a Red Ginger, the only onboard an R-Class ship.  New to Vista is the influence of Giada De Laurentis , the ship’s godmother and television food star.  She has contributed a handful of dishes new to the Toscana menu including a lemon pasta as well as a branzino.  What hasn’t changed are the best bread baskets at sea that includes a head of roasted garlic and a visit by an oil sommelier of sorts with a cart filled with artisanal olive oils and balsamic vinegars to choose from for dipping all that excellent bread.  Toscana also offers the best GF breadbasket onboard.

a plate of food on a table

Red Ginger is a fan favorite amongst Oceania Cruises loyalists and is only available on Vista, Marina, Riviera, and Sirena.  On all the ships it has the most dramatic décor, most visually interesting dishes, and offers the most memorable experiences.  Starting when you sit down you’re given the choice of chopsticks plucked from a lacquer box, then there’s a magic towel to clean your fingers, an edamame starter comes next, then they take your tea order to be served at any point during or after the meal at your choice.

As GF diners, this is also one of our favorite meals on each cruise with Red Ginger as they do GF tempura for us as well as well as making sure all of the marinades do not contain gluten.  We always over-order, sometimes skipping lunch before, and we always finish everything (sorry René, we sometimes order multiple entrees ).  But we never make it to dessert.  Some of our favorites are the duck and watermelon salad, any of the tempuras, miso-glazed seabass, and the fried rice.

a plate of food on a table

Honorable Mention – Afternoon Tea in Horizons

a table with tea and desserts

While not technically a restaurant, Horizons offers an afternoon tea every afternoon at 4pm.  Each person is provided a choice of gourmet teas served in your personal tea pot as well as a selection of sweet and savory options served from trollies that are pushed around the lounge while live music is played.  It’s a very civilized experience and one that everyone should experience at least once on their cruise.

We noticed on Vista that the furniture placement makes it difficult for the wait staff to push the trollies rendering certain seats finger-sandwich deserts.  Hopefully something can be done as it is frustrating for crew as well as those sitting out of reach of the tasty pastries on offer.  For us, they generally have GF snacks in the back that they can retrieve as well as occasionally having meringues, berries and cream, and macarons that are always GF.

That’s our run-down of the dining options onboard Oceania Cruises’ Vista.  If you’ve sailed Oceania Cruises before, which dining venue is your favorite? – Michael

Oceania’s new menus and enhanced dining

Oceania Cruises implement dramatic enhancements and new menus to elevate the on board dining scene.

In this article

  • The Dom Pérignon Experience at La Reserve
  • Private Dining at Privée with new menus
  • La Reserve by Wine Spectator
  • New restaurants coming to Vista

As cruising resumes around the world, Oceania Cruises have unveiled an enhanced on board culinary offering including new menus.

Indeed, the company used the pause in cruising to reimagine the dining experience. The result elevates what was already an outstanding culinary scene. Guests can now discover evolved menus and taste sensations, not to mention new dining experiences.

“Our expert culinary team is constantly innovating to create new epicurean experiences for our guests with a gastronomic palate to discover, including one-of-a-kind culinary journeys they will treasure long after disembarking the ship.” Steve Odell, Senior Vice President & Managing Director Asia Pacific, Oceania Cruises.

Highlights of the enhanced Oceania Cruises dining scene include:

  • The Dom Pérignon Experience at La Reserve by Wine Spectator
  • New Culinary concepts onboard Vista

Brittany Blue Lobster in Yellow Curry Broth as served in La Reserve on Oceania Riviera.

It is arguably one of the most indulgent dining experiences at sea. Indeed, the Dom Pérignon Experience at La Reserve is an evening of gastronomy like no other. It offers a six-course degustation menu paired with various vintages of Dom Pérignon champagne. There’s even a highly prized Dom Pérignon rosé. As we have previously reported, the menu is exquisite. There is Brittany Blue Lobster in Yellow Curry Broth, Black Truffle Risotto, and Seared sashimi-style Wagyu Beef with Sautéed Arugula.

It’s worth noting that The Dom Pérignon Experience at La Reserve is a communal dining event, shared at a long timber table. Also, it is exclusive to Riviera and Marina.

Privée is the lavishly decorated private dining room on Riviera and Marina. With magnificent ocean views it’s the perfect place to celebrate milestone occasions at sea.

Sea Bass Fillet Baked in Puff Pastry Crust with Beurre Blanc as served in Privée.

Now, Privée boasts a new degustation menu with delights like Sea Bass Fillet Baked in Puff Pastry Crust with Beurre Blanc as well as Raspberry Mille-Feuille prepared tableside. There is also a new Wine Pairing Menu.

The Executive Chef’s Menu has dishes like Potato Fritters with Servuga Caviar and Vodka-Lime Cream. In addition, there is Maine Lobster Ravioli with Vegetable Primavera and Basil Foam.

Of course guests can also choose from the Best of Oceania Cruises Menu, or the Best of Polo Grill and Toscana Menus.

When not hosting the Dom Pérignon experience, La Reserve offers an equally inspiring wine paring evening. The menu is destination inspired and the wine pairings are expertly curated. A meal in La Reserve is an unforgettable experience for any gourmet cruiser.

Sample expertly paired wines at La Reserve on Riviera and Marina.

New dining experiences await when Oceania Cruises 1200-guest Vista debuts in 2023. Indeed, there will be 12 culinary venues onboard, an unprecedented number for a ship of Vista’s size .

Among the new restaurants will be Ember, a signature Oceania dining venue with an all-new menu of inventive American creations blended with time-honoured classics. There will also be the Aquamar Kitchen, dedicated to healthy eating without sacrificing tastes sensations.

Oceania Cruises has announced the restaurants and dining experiences that will be available on its newest ship,  Vista.

The vessel will offer a whopping total of 12 dining venues, which is a lot for a ship of its size. Of the 12, four are brand new to the line and exclusive to  Vista.

“ Vista  will present a fresh perspective on the finest cuisine at sea with an astounding array of dining options that range from informal to the extravagant,” said Bob Binder, President and CEO of Oceania Cruises. “A dramatic re-inspiration of every dining space from décor to table setting to menu offerings has resulted in a new pinnacle of diversity and creativity for our guests to enjoy.”

Ember is the signature addition to Oceania’s range of restaurants. Open for lunch and dinner, Ember will feature a menu of inventive American creations blended with time-honoring classics.

The menu will include dishes like Braised Short Ribs on Polenta, Grilled Swordfish with Asparagus, Crab Cakes with Spicy Aioli, and a Cobb Salad with Smoked Chicken.

Aquamar Kitchen

Aquamar Kitchen presents a fresh perspective on dining and the pursuit of wellness. Whether you’re a die-hard foodie who eats just about anything or are dedicated to a particular culinary lifestyle, Aquamar Kitchen offers an abundance of choices with none of the guilt.

Breakfast includes cold-pressed raw juices and superfood smoothies, hearty homemade granolas, avocado toast, organic power bowls, and savory breakfast wraps.

For lunch, dozens of healthy dishes are offered such as Slow-Roasted Organic Salmon with quinoa tabouleh and lemon tahini, Yellowfin Tacos with white cabbage slaw, or even a Crunchy Chicken Sandwich on a freshly baked whole grain bun.

The Grand Dining Room

The Grand Dining Room is just what it sounds like — a grand dining room.

The signature dining experience has always offered a variety of continental dishes, and now a fresh new variety of options will also be available. Choices will include everything from signature Jacques Pépin classics to a spectrum of global flavors and an all-new Executive Chef’s Tasting Menu. Menus at The Grand Dining Room will change daily.

Polo Grill will be  Vista ‘s classic steakhouse, feature rich décor and an abundance of custom millwork paired with white linen tablecloths and black jacketed servers.

All beef dishes served at Polo Grill are 28-day dry aged certified Black Angus USDA Prime. Seafood classics such as swordfish and whole Maine lobster gratinée are also standouts on the menu.

Toscana presents an evolution of Tuscan cuisine in an authentically Italian-inspired setting. Many of Oceania’s Italian recipes originated with the mothers and grandmothers of its own Italian culinary staff.

Presented on elegant, custom Versace china, the masterfully-prepared dishes exemplify the essence of Tuscany. Choices include hand-rolled gnocchi with pesto, risotto with lobster medallions and shallots, and pan-seared sea bass filet finished with Sorrento lemon, chardonnay, and capers.

Red Ginger evokes the boldness and subtleties of the Pan-Asian dishes that Oceania chefs have created.

The Thai, Korean, Japanese, and Malaysian-rooted specialties are a combination of spicy and soothing, savory and sweet to please just about anyone. Dishes include spicy roast duck salad, beef penang with coconut rice and paratha roti, and Thai vegetable curry with sweet potatoes, aubergine, mushrooms, and basil in green curry sauce.

Terrace Café

Terrace Café is the ship’s informal buffet, offering seating both indoors and out.

Dishes change daily, and also include Oceania’s hallmark Chef’s Market Dinners featuring locally-inspired specialties from different ports of call along the itinerary.

Waves Grill is a casual, colorful setting for enjoying all-American favorites. Located in a spacious, shaded area near the pool, the venue serves up things like gourmet burgers, fries, seafood, sandwiches, salads, and desserts in an open galley.

The Culinary Center is where passionate Chef Instructors share their perspectives on culture and cuisine through the lens of food and wine. Here, passengers can partake in hands-on instruction and then enjoy their creations in the new oceanview Culinary Center Dining Room.

Also offered in the Culinary Center Dining Room are food and wine pairing experiences.

privee oceania vista

Priveé is Oceania Cruises’ marquee venue for intimate culinary celebrations for a maximum of 10 guests.

Backlit, debossed walls and a blooming flower petal ceiling from which a chandelier hangs over the marble slab dining table set the stage for an elegant and memorable evening. A wall of floor-to-ceiling windows provides a beautiful sea view to complement the private dinner experience.

baristas oceania vista

Baristas offers stunning 270 degree ocean views for passengers while they sip on illy espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes. Pastries, finger sandwiches, and homemade biscotti are also available at the chic café.

Steps away from Baristas is the new Bakery, featuring freshly baked French and Italian pastries such as chocolate-almond croissants and sweet bombolini. The Library is also nearby, a perfect spot to visit with coffee and a pastry.

Oceania’s  Vista  is set to debut in early 2023. The ship’s inaugural season opens for viewing on September 9, 2021, and will open for booking on September 15, 2021.

Oceania Cruises Restaurant Guide with Menus

Dive into all of the delicious details with our Oceania Cruises Restaurant guide complete with all of the restaurant menus for each venue!

Oceania Cruises Restaurant Guide

Share this post:

Oceania Marina is part of the Oceania Class of ships in the Oceania Cruises’ fleet. This premium cruise ship offers a variety of dining options. The best part is that most of the dining on Oceania Cruises is complimentary. If you have an upcoming cruise with this brand, this guide is for you. We have all of the Oceania Cruises restaurant menus in this detailed look at all the food on Oceania Marina.

Casual Dining

The cruise ship’s coffee shop, Baristas, is on deck 14 aft. Your cruise fare includes all the espresso-based drinks at this location. In addition, during the morning and afternoon, the venue features snacks that are also complimentary.

The self-service stations offer small breakfast pastries, continental items, fruit, and toast. In the afternoons, you can find cookies, small pastries, and a few finger sandwiches. It is a great spot to grab a quite bite before or after your shore excursion.

Drink Menus

Terrace Cafe

Deck 12 is home to most of the casual dining on the ship. All the way aft is the Terrace Café. This is the cruise ship buffet. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the buffet offers a variety of hot and cold selections.

For breakfast, the venue was open most days from 7 am to 10 am. Here, the traditional fare includes a custom omelet station along with options like pancakes, French toast, and a variety of breakfast pastries. There are also cereals, plenty of fruit, and other lighter fare.

In our opinion, lunch options were a bit underwhelming though. Also, it was open only for a few hours, usually from 12 pm to 2 pm each day. For lunch, there was often a carving station and an additional station serving selections like pasta.

Oceania Cruises Restaurants

A custom grill serves made-to-order hamburgers, fish, and chicken as well. Further, there is a small salad bar and some premade items.

Dinner offered many of the same starters and entrees served in the main dining room. Similarly, the dinner hours at the Terrace Café are from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

During dinner hours, the grill sears up more premium options like steak, shrimp, and more. There are similar stations for dinner with a salad bar, a selection of appetizers, and often a wok station with custom stir-fry or pasta options.

Waves Grill

On our 10-night Northern Realms cruise on Oceania Marina, our go-to spot for lunch was the Waves Grill. The venue was open most days from 11:30 am to 4 pm.

Featuring signature hamburgers, sandwiches, and paninis, this outdoor eatery is conveniently located near the pool. It also has a small salad bar, as well as some delicious steak fries. Here, guests order with staff and the food is delivered to your table when it is ready.

During our cruise, the Waves Grill also offered a small breakfast buffet. Most mornings, it was open from 7 am to 11 am.

Waves Grill on Oceania Cruises

Adjacent to Waves Grill is the smoothie shop and ice cream parlor. Again, all the selections here are complimentary.

In the morning, you can get a variety of healthy bowls and smoothies. While in the afternoon, delicious homemade ice cream from Humphry Slocombe is on the menu.

Main Dining Room

Oceania Cruises offers a very traditional main dining room experience. The Grand Dining Room on deck 6 is open every day for breakfast and dinner. It is open seating, meaning guests are sat on a first come, first serve basis.

Breakfast options include entrees like banana pancakes and French toast, along with signature omelets including the keto omelet and the Spanish omelet. There is also a wide selection of standard breakfast fare.

Breakfast hours are from 7:30 am to 9 am most days. Each evening, the Grand Dining room is open for dinner from 6:30 pm to 9 pm.

At night, the Grand Dining Room serves a rotational menu. This menu features a variety of alternating appetizers, salads, soups, entrees, and desserts. In addition, there are standards that remain on the menu each evening.

Oceania Marina Cruise Review

Every night, you will find starters like chilled shrimp, lobster bisque, and Caesar salad. The Jacques Pepin signature entrees each evening consist of salmon, sirloin, and roasted chicken.

For dessert, cruisers can choose from various ice cream, a cheese plate, and the soufflé of the day.

Rotational selections include a globally inspired menu. From starters like foie gras, a Maryland-style crab cake, and beef carpaccio, cruisers have a variety of starters from which to choose. Various soups and salads also are available each evening as well.

Select cuts and chops of beef, poultry and pork, pasta, and seafood were among the entrees every night. Some of our favorites were the osso bucco, butter roasted lobster, and the truffle mac and cheese.

Signature Restaurants

Located on Deck 14, Polo Grill is Oceania Cruises American-style steakhouse.

Like most of the signature restaurants on Oceania Cruises, Polo Grill is included in your cruise fare; though, reservations are required for this venue. Polo Grill is open from 6:30 pm to 9 pm each night of the cruise.

Of course, the popular menu selections include the signature cuts of beef, as well as seafood dishes and other chops.

Oceania Cruises Restaurant Menus

During our dinner, some of the standouts included the clam chowder and oysters for starters.

For an entrée, I went with the surf and turf. My medium steak was accompanied by a succulent lobster tail. As you might know by now, the Princess went with the only chicken dish on the menu.

The sides dishes here were rather standard, with the roasted garlic mashed potatoes and crispy onion rings among our favorites.

For the final course, how can you pass up the chocolate fudge brownie for dessert?

Polo Grill Menu

Also on deck 14 is the Italian restaurant Toscana. Similar to other venues, Toscana’s dining hours are from 6:30 pm to 9 pm.

We had the pleasure of dining here twice during our 10-day trip. In our opinion, the food at Toscana rivals the top Italian restaurants found on land. The large menu offers a variety of classically prepared Italian-American dishes. Not to mention, some delicious freshly made bread.

oceania cruises ember restaurant

The fried calamari appetizer was crispy, with a tangy aioli dipping sauce. The Caprese salad starter featured creamy mozzarella cheese and ripe fresh tomatoes drizzled in olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette.

The pasta dishes were outstanding too, including the pesto gnocchi, the linguine cioppino, and the tagliolini carbonara. For entrees, my medium veal chop was tender with a creamy mushroom sauce. Additionally, the lobster fra diavolo had just the right kick, along with lusciously grilled lobster and al dente pasta.

Toscana Menu

If you like traditional French cuisine, Jacques on deck 5 is your spot. Open from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, this venue serves up rich and decadent starters, entrees, and desserts.

It starts with crunchy French baguettes. From there, cruisers will dine on specialties such as duck foie gras, escargot, and a variety of other cold and hot starters.

oceania cruises ember restaurant

For entrees, there are options like bouillabaisse, a French seafood stew, or lobster thermidor. You can also carve into a filet, the cheese soufflé, or try the duck parmentier with an orange sauce.

Just make sure to save room for dessert. Along with petit fours, cruisers can enjoy the pistachio crème brulee or the crepe of the day, among other delicacies.

Jacques Menu

On the portside of deck 5 midship, you will discover Red Ginger. This pan-Asian restaurant is open from 6:30 pm to 9 pm as well and is the final complimentary Oceania Marina restaurant. As fans of this style of cuisine, Red Ginger did not disappoint.

When dining with a group, you can’t go wrong with the shared plate. With sushi, tempura, crispy calamari, and skewers, it offers a little bit of everything.

oceania cruises ember restaurant

Certainly, don’t pass up the chicken satays or the imperial crispy potato roll. This is essentially a shrimp egg roll.

For larger plates, the miso glazed fish is light and flaky, with just the right amount of tangy glaze. The beef teriyaki was seared to perfection with an equally impressive sweet sauce. The Princess also enjoyed the red curry chicken which was just mild enough for her. Not to mention, the udon noodles and stir-fried rice were the perfect accompaniments to these entrees.

Red Ginger Menu

One of the only restaurants on Oceania Cruises that is an up-charge is La Reserve. This tasting menu includes 4 to 7 courses, with wine pairings, showcasing some of the finest cuisine at sea.

Reservations are required, and they do fill up quickly. Once you are booked, strap in for a multi-course culinary whirlwind.

Oceania Cruises Restaurant Menus

With three different tasting menus, ranging from $75 to $295, the menus include items like scallops, lobster, Dover sole, and beef tenderloin. Accompanying wines or champagnes complete a perfect evening out.

Given that Heidi is a picky eater, this was the only venue we did not try during our time onboard Oceania Marina. However, those we spoke to raved about the quality.

Thus, this restaurant is a must for foodies and wine aficionados!

La Reserve Menu

A Taste of Vista

For those loyal Oceania cruisers, the newest ship in the fleet will be debuting in 2023. During our sailing, we were able to sample some of the new menu items coming to Vista. The ship will feature elevated food and beverage items that are sure to exceed all your expectations, including a number of new zero-proof cocktails.

Some other dishes we were able to sample included butternut squash risotto, porcini-dusted prime rib, and lobster wellington.

With just a taste of what’s to come on Vista, we are eager to get onboard and test out everything, including the new restaurants Ember and Aquamar Kitchen as well as the new pizzeria at the Wave Grill and the bakery near Baristas.

On Vista now. Embers compares to an upscale American chain restaurant like J. Alexander or P. F. Chang’s serving you in Des Moines. Strictly American food and in and out in 1-1:15 hours. Popular with some, ho hum with others. I haven’t heard of anyone clamoring for a second reservation there. I do believe it will have a following.

Doesn’t sound like a worthy successor to Jacques…

Since we have never dined in Des Moines, we will have to equate Ember to a Cheesecake Factory for an upscale Bistro type dining. Definitely a different vibe and a noisier venue. We found it good, but certainly not an Oceania Specialty restaurant. Ember should become a walk in lunch and dinner restaurant, forget the reservations, just come and go as you will from perhaps 11 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. It will be interesting to see how it evolves by October when we are back aboard Vista and Oceania has had some time to evaluate its acceptance with the thousands of critiques. Food was OK, maybe a B to B- IMHO.

We have not seen much written about the Aquamar Kitchen.  Again, IMHO, the jury should still be out on it being a hit or miss. An OK place to stop for a healthier, lite bite without venturing into the Terrace Cafe and the Oceania version of a crowd. It will be interesting to see who it appeals to.  We ate there once mid morning after a time change /alarm faux paux.  We were on a 7 Day cruise and wanted to try every restaurant once to get a feeling for Vista and her changes. I would probably go with a B- as well, JMHO.  As I misdirect this topic again, We really loved the casual atmosphere and quick coffee and pastry fare of Barista’s. DEFINITELY an A.  The Bakery is great and offers a classy little Starbucks type eatery with far better quality of everything. Gosh, maybe even some great taste in those infamous “tasteless” Oceania cookies 🤪 🤙 😇 , JMHO again.  Have a great Father’s Day all and Enjoy

We thought the food was outstanding at Embers. We were disappointed with Polo Steak house, ordered a ribeye at Polo's and it was the smallest steak I had seen served, very disappointing. Ordered a Ribeye at Embers that was excellent. It is more casual, we found the servers very friendly and the atmosphere was casual but nice.

Come and go as we please from 11am to 9pm would make Ember a more distinctly American dining experience.

Haha

We did not like Embers at all. The decor is lovely though. The food ho-hum and it was so noisy we couldn't hear anyone. I get the concept but as others have said a poor substitute for Jacques. It's more of a casual lunch type place, me thinks. We loved Aquamar though, but we enjoy that type of food. They are still working our some kinks in the service but overall it was our favorite lunch place if we were on the ship and much quieter than Waves!

Someone we were dining with did enjoy the steak in Embers though and said it was the best they had had on the ship.

I don’t follow the management reasoning of changing the French-Italian-Asian-Steak/American foursome of specialties into a foursome of Italian-Asian-Steak/American-Steak/American.  The Oceania site itself recommends a dinner of crabcake, beet salad and grilled ribeye as the example of an great Ember experience; how did they not say “oh, wait, that’s the Polo experience also!”

1. Teach the bakers to mix the cookie dough soft ingredients first, then fold in the dry ingredients.  2. Replace the plonk that is Germain Champagne.  3.  Turn Embers back into Jacques.

My new mantra of Oceania helpful and constructive suggestions.

HilsTas

We found the food at Ember to be quite unexciting/dull and it was also very noisy - the ceiling panels bounced all the noise back down again.

Tried it twice, then cancelled the third reservation - the Terrace was a much better option.

steamboats

I had a little mixed emotions about Ember. Food was not up to par with the other specialty restaurants.

I love Aquamar Kitchen. I even tried the vegan burger (although I´m not vegan) and it was delicious. The avocado toasts are great. For a lighter, healthier fare or a late lunch it´s a wonderful place. But they need to get the wind out of it.

A great addition is also Waves as a pizza and burrata place for the evening.

Sorry to go off Embers topic, but has anyone on a Vista Concierge extended balcony cabin had loungers on them?  Heard none provided on several previous Vista cruises

Thanks so much!

On topic, for a cruise line touted for its food, what were they thinking eliminating Jacques for a casual noisy venue?  We have JR Alexanders here…it’s casual, average food and noisy. We switched a Caribbean cruise from Vista to Marina….similar itinerary and Jacques.

1. If they put Jacques name on a new restaurant, they owe Pepin continuing additional royalties.

2. Some of the current passengers have stated they are pleased having a sit down service venue of simple American food. They emphasized simple and American.

Still haven’t heard of anyone aboard asking for a second reservation.

As Jacques Pepin has reached a certain age he´s not doing any new restaurants onboard. But regarding the fact how the announced Ember I was expecting a little bit more...

Based on what you and others are saying steamboats I don't think I shall book Ember.  So that makes 2 restaurants we don't eat at -- Embers and Toscana.   (I hate the portion sizes in Toscana and the preponderance of tomato based sauce. )

You can ask for larger or smaller portions

Ask  for something without tomato  sauce  or less of it  if that is the issue

I have a sensitivity  to tomato sauce  in small amounts I am ok  but things like  lasagna  I get a reaction

Just  a thought

We were too....a cafe setting OK but with more ambience and elegance as the norm on O dining venues, not a chain style venue.  Hearing that some have refused additional visits there says it all!!

Thanks for the suggestion.  Problem is we are used to really northern Italian cuisine.  Piedmonte etc.  (Near where we live in Switzerland).   The tomatos based dishes are mostly from the Mezzogiorno.  Southern Italy.   However I did see when looking at a Toscana menu that they had some things that interest us - like the fresh octopus carpaccio etc.     I think we will give it another try.

Reading other reviews I really do not see why they can't scrap Embers and put Jacques back ...  Jacques is a sure hit and most of us love it!  Embers seems to be missing the mark.

I guess my personal disappointment is that the Ember concept just seems like someone didn't even try to come up with something more interesting for us North Americans.  We can get this menu just about anywhere in these parts.    I mean, off the top of my head, why not a Spanish tapas type concept.  Maybe another bistro type French restaurant instead of Jacques if licensing is a problem.  Or a high end Indian experience.  I'll definitely try it of course but the lack of imagination is perplexing.

Maybe the target audience is not North Americans...and maybe some North Americans would like to have a sit down respite from the other cuisines.

I don't disagree with this assessment that Ember would be attractive to others for a multitude of reasons.   As food is subjective, we each have our own palates.  I'm just expressing mine as mine alone and contrasting what I have available  here at home vs my desire to have different on vacation.  In any case, our cruises will be enjoyable as neither of us has to cook and do the dishes 😁

I've been wondering if the Ember concept is just a temporary "holding pattern" until O forms a partnership with a chef or some other brand. I also like to eat things that aren't readily available at home (or that are subpar) and that I won't normally cook. I've often thought, "I should try making a souffle" but it's never happened, so we tried some dessert souffles (didn't see the others) last week...yum! (Although my spouse said the strawberry souffle tasted like booberry cereal 🤪 👻 )

Hey, wait folks.  I never said it was not good food, it was good.  IMHO it is not an Oceania Specialty restaurant befitting the need for a Reservation. Guests we ate with liked their meals and the different menu items. You can not eat 2-3  “RICH” meals everyday, so why not enjoy a good meal, just not a great meal like those offered in the other Specialty restaurants. There are a number of very good menu items and believe me, no one stopped eating the triple chocolate desert that arrived at our table.  Like I said before, it would be a great 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 walk in full service restaurant that would also be a popular lunch spot, especially after 2:00 p.m. when the TC closes. I know, Waves is open but why not Ember? Staffing could be an issue however 🤞

I am sure, lots more comments to come as Vista gets more sailings under her belt and the Culinary Director’s have a chance to analyze the the surveys.   Just Enjoy it all,

I'm sure the food is up to snuff for Oceania.  Well prepared, good ingredients etc.  I'll be able to taste for myself shortly but I think as you alluded to, it maybe a concept that is better suited to no reservations/walk-in/extended hours.  Time will tell.  As for rich foods (which we love) O is pretty good at offering items in the GDR and TC that you can mix and match to get healthier options for dinner.  And now Aquamar too for breakfast and lunch which is where we generally go light anyway.  That part of mixing it up I can say I personally do more often than not and leave the specialties as "special".  Being on 30 days this upcoming trip, I will be mixing it up a lot and indulging sporadically.  Wish me luck 😁

Restaurateur Ellen Kaye , whose parents once owned The Russian Tea Room , has finally settled on a location for her own Russian restaurant, Moscow 57 . Bowery Boogie reports that Kaye and her business partners are applying for a liquor license at 168 1/2 Delancey Street on the Lower East Side. That's the former home of Apolo Restaurant .

Kaye first announced this project way back in 2011. At the time, she said she wanted to open it in the Theater District, but those plans fell through. For the last few years, she and her partners have hosted occasional Moscow 57 pop-ups around town. According to the restaurant's website , "Moscow 57, the restaurant, will feature Russian Central Asian food and great music from a New Yorker's perspective. " Kaye and her team are expected to appear before the CB3 later this month. · Moscow 57 Gunning for Former Apolo Restaurant on Delancey [BB] · All Coverage of Moscow 57 [~ENY~] [Photo: Moscow 57 ]

POOLSIDE ALFRESCO MAGIC

On the deck of a cherished Malibu beach house, the magic begins with the grill. Likewise, Waves Grill is a shaded poolside dining spot serving made-to-order all-American favorites from lunch until late into the afternoon. Taste the richness of a Wagyu burger with juicy tomatoes and a savory black truffle sauce. The seasoned fries are irresistible while the light crunch of fresh coleslaw is the perfect complement to the herb-marinated mahi mahi. For dessert, try a thick hand-dipped milkshake or one of the new, whimsical ice cream flavors by Humphry Slocombe such as the mouthwatering Secret Breakfast pairing of bourbon and cornflake cookies.

The Pizzeria at Waves Grill

Each evening as if by culinary alchemy, Waves Grill is transformed into an authentic Neapolitan trattoria with the pizza oven at the epicenter. Imagine you are in Capri overlooking the twinkling lights of Naples, as the alluring aroma of fresh pizza dough baking in a classic wood-fired forno wafts among the bougainvillea. Set the tone with a glass of dry chianti, then savor sweet and spicy dry-rubbed chicken wings, tender pork ribs or rosemary focaccia with lush burrata, plump tomatoes, peppery arugula and bold balsamic dressing. Pizza creations feature delectable toppings ranging from flora black olives and oaky truffles to fiery chorizo and tart lemon chicken. No matter your selection, your palate will heartily approve.
