If I had to choose two segments regarding what I mainly look for when it comes to an excursion and tourism in general, I would probably say gastronomy and the historical significance of a particular destination. These are the two things that I consider my very own starting points when I contemplate on my next journey. Obviously, I could have written a white-sanded beach as well, but it would have been too evident to type, wouldn’t it? Well, taking my favourite characteristics of a certain place into consideration, I really like the combination that, for example, a historic castle could offer during a fair or any kind of event. It is an occasion where, on the one hand, you can explore the scene’s historical nature, while you are also able to enjoy some delicious bites in the bustle of the crowd. Especially when we are talking about a certain city, in which both a castle that is hundreds of years old and several further attractions can be found . Please let me show you the 700-year-old Hungarian city, Gyula and its most important tourist attractions .

The castle of Gyula

In my country, there are multiple castles from the Middle Ages that are still standing . One of them can be found in Gyula , which actually is the most unspoilt brick castle in the lowlands of Central Europe. It was built in the 14th-15th century, and nowadays a museum, castle theatre and exhibitions are all operating in it.

Every year, the program calendar of Gyula offers a rich selection of events, most of which are held in the castle’s garden. As I mentioned above, these occasions include fairs and other programs that are all charming and entertaining without exception. During these fairs, all the worthily famous culinary manufacturers of Gyula represent themselves, such as Gyulai Húskombinát (sausage and liver pate) and Gyulai Pálinka Manufaktúra (palinka, the “Hungarian brandy”).

As well as several other Hungarian cities – eg. Zalakaros and Harkány , the 700-year-old Gyula also proudly represents the members of my country’s well-known thermal baths . The spa has been providing its guests wi th the thermal water since 1958, and from 2013, even a so-called aqua palace is awaiting everyone. Here, there are many pools with hydromassage, water slides and countless further services in a modern environment . As for the thermal water section, we can choose out of 19 pools, in which we can enjoy the benefits of the originally 72-degree-Celsius hot, yellowish-brownish water heated to a pleasantly warm temperature.

But we don’t have to worry, there are even deeper things to discover in this city.

History of Gyula

The area has been inhabited since the New Stone Age times: the White-Körös line has proved to be the perfect place to build ancient villages. There are many traces of the period known as the Körös culture, which later continued in the Tisza culture.

Copper-bronze and Iron Age artifacts also prove that life in this area was continuous. The first really significant people who lived here were the Scythians , but later on, the Celts turned around as well in the area.

Gyula was first mentioned in written records in 1332. We can thank the prosperity of the settlement to Róbert Károly when he established the Gyula estate, which played an important economic role. The settlement became a city in the time of the Anjouk.

The city had its golden age in the 16th century, before the Turkish era. The turning point is connected to the siege of Gyula Castle in 1566. During the fight against the Ottoman troops, three castles emerged, one of them was the Gyula castle, which was held by heroic defenders for 63 days.

If you want to relax and charge up a bit, then Gyula Castle Bath is definitely recommended. On 5000 m2, there are 16 pools to choose from.

The hydrogen carbonate healing water which is rising here is mainly good for abdominal musculoskeletal disorders, but it is also suitable for rehabilitation after accidents and surgeries.

There are many other options available at this complex: massage, mud pack or rehabilitation. The spa of Gyula is located in the territory of the former Almásy Castle , in its park which is designated as a nature reserve, so the environment itself is just as spectacular.

The little ones wouldn’t be bored either, as the wave bath in the aqua park is a really exciting experience for them.

And of course, the Gyula Castle is also an unavoidable sight of the city. The castle is the only remaining plain brick castle in Central Europe which was built in the 15th century.

Visitors can follow the life and history of the castle, in 24 exhibition rooms which have been performing various functions of the castle over the centuries.

There is a beautiful panoramic view from the castle lookout tower, and the so-called Corvin Bastion round cannon tower is also an interesting sight.

However, the castle was under Turkish rule for 129 years after the siege of 1566. Later, the castle worked as a brewery and a distillery but even functioned as a prison.

The Gothic brick castle has been open for visitors since 2005: in addition to the castle museum, a knight’s room and a wine bar with medieval flair can be tried too.

The monument is truly multifunctional as it even functions as a stone theater. Here we can see great musical or even prose performances, but it also serves as a venue for various festivals.

Almásy Castle Visitor Center

The Almásy Castle Visitor Center in Gyula is a real experience for all ages. In a unique way, it uses interactive tools to present the former aristocratic life and all its segments.

We can look into not only the everyday life of the nobles but also the servants, moreover, we can even try the kind of chores they had if housework wouldn’t be enough.

Projectors, installations and the so-called holoprojectors also enhance the experience. This allows us to catch a glimpse of the life of the former inhabitants through the mock-up window of the castle.

Centenary Confectionery

If you’re tired of visiting the castle and looking around at museums, and you have sweet teeth, head to the Centenary Confectionery (Száz éves cukrászda).

The place, which has been operating since 1840, is the second oldest confectionery in Hungary.

The Empire-style building offers a beautiful interior for the visitors, with original Biedermeier furniture and, of course, with delicious cakes. Those who want to feel the vibe of a reform-era café are in the best place.

In the place of the former confectionery workshop, a confectionery museum has been established, so we can catch a glimpse of contemporary tools and methods of making cakes.

Erkel Ferenc Memorial House

Naturally, the Erkel Ferenc Memorial House is named after its former resident, the famous composer Ferenc Erkel. The building used to function as a teaching house, and in 1830, the cantor and schoolhouse got its neoclassical style.

The Erkel family came to Gyula from Bratislava in 1806, and the head of the family lived and taught there until 1841, where eventually the founder of the Hungarian National Opera and the composer of the National Anthem were born.

In the memorial house, we can get to know more about European anthems and music and its history. We can also discover Erkel’s personal belongings and relics and they enchante the former family home for us.

We can also visit the rooms and the traditional kitchen.

Gyula Sausage Museum

As I have already mentioned, many people remember Gyula because of the mouth-watering sausage, and those who want to take a deeper look at the history and the making of the sausages should visit the Gyula Sausage Museum.

The exhibition, which has been opened since 1985, consists of its own collection and offerings from the surrounding butcher’s families.

After a few bad years, the fate of the museum was reconsidered to restore the Gyula sausage’s reputation.

Living Water Canal

The Living Water Canal, which revolutionizes the cityscape, crosses Gyula for 5 kilometers.

Its shores are lined with lime trees and willows, where not only visitors but also locals enjoy walking or running. We can go boating or pedalo all along almost the entire city, so we can see the city on an extraordinary tour.

Snail Garden

If the weather allows us and we want to be in nature, then I recommend the Snail Garden in Gyula. On the banks of the Live Water Canal, there is the city’s largest green area, with 3.7 hectares of its own, which is, of course, a nature reserve.

It was named after the former snail-shaped promenade running down the artificial hillside. It is the perfect place to take a break, sit down on the benches and admire the 300-year-old pedunculate oaks, yews or the rare Christ trees. This beautiful environment often serves as a venue for weddings.

Mályvádi Forest

The Mályvádi Forest also offers great hiking opportunities. The Mályvád Ancient Oak is not only a nature reserve but also the second-largest forest in the Great Plain. It is a popular destination for hikers as it has rich wildlife and vegetation.

Cityforest, the popular resort of the town, is located about 5 km from Gyula. The sandy beach is popular with anglers or those who wish to bathe.

We can go kayaking, canoeing on the water, or it could be a good choice to take a hike in the surrounding woods.

Szanazug lies at the confluence of the White and the Black-Körös. It is also a popular resort in this area, its clean and shallow water providing a great experience for the beach visitors.

There is also a ferry ride between the two shores,  while canoeing, boating and riding a pedalo are also possible.

Gyula: mit érdemes itt megnézni?

Gyula Békés megyében, Békéscsabától 16 km-re fekszik, valamivel több mint 30 ezer lakossal bír a 2017-es adatok szerint. Az ide érkező turistákat számos kulturális látnivaló, gyógyászati és wellness szolgáltatás lehetősége várja. Családosoknak, pároknak, de egyedül érkezőknek is igazi felüdülést és aktív pihenési lehetőséget nyújthat a városban eltöltött pár nap, vagy akár több hét is. Cikkünkben sorra vesszük Gyula legfontosabb látnivalóit, hiszen a Gyuláról szóló útikönyv sokszor hiánycikk a könyvesboltok polcain.

A Gyulai vár

A Gyulai vár Közép-Európa egyetlen épségben maradt síksági tégla erődítménye. A város első hiteles írásbeli említése Károly Róbert idejéből származik, az ő okleveleiben szerepel. A királytól kapta a város több kiváltságát is. A Gyulához kötődő uradalmak későbbi története elsősorban a régmúlttal foglalkozókat érdekelheti, a várról annyit érdemes mindenképpen megjegyezni, hogy 1403-ban Maróti János bán kapta meg Gyulát és a Gyula környéki településeket és ő kezdte meg a vár építését. Pontos adataink ugyan nincsenek, de arra következtethetünk, hogy 1403- és 1430 között épült meg a vár, írásbeli forrás utal arra, hogy 1445-ben a várkápolnát is felszentelték. 1476-ban kihalt a várbirtokos Maróti család és a birtokot Mátyás király Corvin Jánosnak adományozta, ekkor vált Gyula a megye székhelyévé is. Még Dózsa György seregei 1514-ben is állomásoztak Gyula vára alatt, azonban nincs tudomásunk a vár ostromáról, feltehetőleg Dózsa visszavonult a túlerő láttán.

A történelmi valós helyzet elképzeléséhez hozzátartozik, hogy ekkor még jelentős vizes, mocsaras vidék volt a megyében, hiszen a Körösöket majd csak a XIX. században fogják szabályozni. Ez azért is fontos, mert a vár védelmében jelentős szerepet játszottak a környéki vizek, mivel nehezen lehetett a várat nehéz fegyverzettel (ágyúk) ostromolni az ingoványos talaj miatt.

A török idők büszkesége is Gyula várának ellenállása, hiszen 1553-ban és 1556-ban is sikeresen verték vissza a várvédők a török ostromát. Majd, 1566-ban esik el a vár Petráf pasa ostroma után, s bár török a vár feladása ellenében szabad elvonulást ígért, szavát meg nem tartotta, a kivonuló várvédőket lemészárolta. Mindössze néhányan menekültek meg, köztük Bethlen Farkas is, a későbbi fejedelem édesapja (a hagyomány szerint jó és gyors lovának köszönhette életét). A vár elestétől számítandó a török 128 éves uralma Gyulán. A török kiűzésére szinte a várak tekintetében utoljára került itt sor, melynek oka szintén a vizes környezet volt. Csak a török kiéheztetésével sikerült 1695-ben visszafoglalni az erősséget (Mehmet pasa adta fel a vár védelmét szabad elvonulás ellenében).

Mai formájában a vár számos, korhű bútorokkal, fegyverekkel berendezett teremmel várja a látogatókat. A vártoronyból kiváló kilátás nyílik a Harruckern-Wenckheim-Almásy-kastélyra és az Élővíz-csatornára.

Ha nyáridőben látogatjuk meg Gyulát, érdemes a várszínházi előadások között olyat találni, melyet szívesen megnéznénk, hiszen utólérhetetlen hangulata van a várba előadott színműveknek. A vár előtti parkban látható a kilenc, Gyulán raboskodó aradi vértanú tábornok tiszteletére felállított emlékmű. Kevésbé ismert tény, hogy közel 1300 honvéd tette le a 48-as szabadságharc után a fegyvert Gyulánál és jó ideig az aradi vértanúk közül 9 a városban volt elszállásolva házaknál, hadifogolyként Városi séták során a házak falán erre márvány emléktábla emlékeztet a tábornokok nevével.

A Gyulai Várfürdő

Az egészségturizmus szempontjából is kiemelt jelentősége van Gyulának, mint fürdővárosnak, hiszen gyógyvizei messze földön híresek és a fürdőzés hagyománya immár évszázados a településen. A várfürdőben számos szabadtéri gyógyvizes medence szolgálja a gyógyulni vágyókat. Különlegessége a szabadtéri strandnak, amelyben természetesen helyet kap a hideg vizes úszómedence, az óránként működő hullámmedence és a csúszdával ellátott gyermek medence is, hogy csodálatos, fákkal tarkított parkban helyezkedik el, a jelenleg felújítás alatt álló kastély mellett. A gyulai gyógyvíz 72 C-on tör fel a föld felszíne alól, a gyógyvizet természetesen visszahűtik, a legmelegebb medence is 34-36 °C-os. A gyógyvizet ajánlják mozgásszervi, idegi panaszokra és egyes nőgyógyászati problémákra is hatásos. A gyógyvizes fürdők igénybevételekor betartandó az optimális hatás elérése végett az ajánlott maximális időtartam : napi kétszer fél óra.

Természetesen a fürdő a gyógyvizes kezelések széles skáláját is felvonultatja, melyek Tb- támogatással is igénybe vehetők, csekély önrész hozzájárulása mellett. A 2015-ös nyári díjszabász szerint egy teljes árú felnőtt napi belépő 2200 Ft.- , a 16 óra utáni jegyek kedvezményesen 1700 Ft-ért megválthatóak. Jegyeket szép-kártyára is vásárolhatunk, az alszámla típusának korlátozása nélkül.

Aki gyermekkel érkezik, kipróbálhatja a modern Aquaparkot is, melyben ugyan gyógyvizes medencék nincsenek, de számos élményelem gondoskodik a család „vizes” szórakozásáról.

Az Erkel Ferenc Emlékmúzeum (Erkel Emlékház)

Kevesen vannak tisztában azzal, hogy Erkel Ferenc, a Himnusz és a Bánk Bán megzenésítője Gyulán született. Édesapja tanítói lakását 1795-ben építették fel. A mai Erkel-házként nyilvántartott emlékhelyben 1808 és 1841 között lakott az Erkel család. Az Erkel múzeum nemcsak a zenét kedvelőknek nyújt felemelő élményt, hiszen számos a családhoz kötődő kézirat, levél és bútor látható az Apor tér 17. szám alatt található, felújított korhű épületben.

A Ladics ház

A Gyulán található ún. Ladics ház érdekessége az, hogy szinte teljes körűen megtekinthető az emlékházban a XIX. századra jellemző polgári élet minden kelléke (szalon, kártyaszoba, étkező, hálószoba, konyha). Magyarországi viszonylatban talán itt ismerhető meg a polgári élet milliője leginkább. A Ladics házat a Jókai Mór utcán találjuk, a Százéves Cukrászda szomszédságában. Fontos megjegyezni, hogy a kiállítás nyitva tartásáról érdeklődjünk a Tourinform Irodában, az internetes információk pontatlanok lehetnek.

A Százéves Cukrászda

Gyula ékének is tekinthető, a gyönyörű, impozáns épületben működő több mint Százéves Cukrászda. Kötelező jellegű látnivaló még annak is, aki nem barátja az édességeknek, hiszen egy kávé elfogyasztása mellett megcsodálhatjuk a cukrászati múzeumot és a gyönyörű szecessziós jellegű bútorzatot és cukrászda belsőt. A Cukrászdát 1841-ben alapította Salis András cukrász mester. Jelenleg 2004 óta üzemelteti a tulajdonos, aki csokoládé manufaktúrát is létrehozott.

 Táj- , víz- és fürdőtörténeti kiállítás

Különleges élményt nyújt a Gyula környéki vizek szabályozásával a és a korai fürdőkultúrával foglalkozó tárlat. Különösen érdekes, hogy a legújabb kutatások szerint bizonyítást nyert, hogy már jóval a török idők előtt is közösségi fürdőházat üzemeltettek Gyulán, artézi vizek segítségével is. A tárlat megtekintéséhez mindenképpen ajánlott szakértő vezetés igénybe vétele. Gyermekek is élvezni fogják a kiállítást, mert számos szórakoztató elem került a programba. A kiállítás legnagyobb értéke talán az, hogy segítségével átlátható és megérthető a Kőrösök szabályozásának története, menete és problematikája.

Nádi Boldogasszony tisztelete kifejezetten a Kőrösök mentéhez kötődik, a hagyomány szerint még a tatárjárás idején, az 1200-as évek közepén egy kisfiúnak jelent meg látomásképpen Nádi Boldogasszony és megmutatta a helyes utat a mocsárvilágban a menekülőknek. A Harruckern téren található templomban szolgált báró Apor Vilmos vértanú püspök, aki igyekezett fenntartani Nádi Boldogasszony tiszteletét. Ma már a templomban csak az eredeti kegykép másolata látható. Vallásos turistáknak szintén érdekes lehet a Mária Múzeum, mely az Apor Vilmos téren található meg. Különlegessége, hogy itt látható a Magyarországon valaha működő szerzetesrendek ruházata modell babákon bemutatva, illetve rengeteg, a világ minden tájáról származó, Máriához kötődő emléktárgy is. A tárlat éke a Mindszenty bíboros adományozta rózsafüzér.

Élővíz-csatorna

A természet szerelmeseit sem hagyja élmény nélkül Gyula. A városon keresztül folyik az un, Élővíz-csatorna, mely tulajdonképpen a Kőrösök szabályozása után megmaradt holtág, mit később a város vízellátása érdekében hasznosítottak. Maradandó élményt jelent a tiszta, áttetsző, élettel teli vízen való vízi biciklizés vagy kenuzás. 2015-ös árak szerint egy óra vízi biciklizés ára 2000 Ft., és kb. 3 km-t tehetünk meg a csatornán a békéscsabai út felé, míg a másik irányba a vár felé biciklizve rövidebb a táv (kb. 1,5 km). Ha választani kell, szépségét és az élővilág gazdagságát figyelembe véve a Csaba felé vezető útvonalat ajánljuk. Az út romantikáját a lehajló füzek, vízi liliomok és változatos látkép mellett az is fokozza, hogy történelmi kőhíd alatt is át kell haladnunk. De önmagában a parton való pihenés is azzal kecsegtet, hogy különböző fajhoz tartozó halakat, mocsári teknősöket, vízi szárnyasokat láthatunk.

Aki Gyulára látogat és a horgászat szerelmese is, mind az Élővíz-csatornára, mind a gyulai horgásztavakra is jegyet válthat, élve horgászszenvedélyével.

A Gyulavári Kastély

A kastélyban látható kincsek ezzel nem merülnek ki, hiszen a Kőrösök vidékének élővilága (halak, emlősök, madarak, növények) interaktív gyermekek számára is érdekes és tanulságos formában és környezetben jelenik meg. Ha elfáradtunk a múzeum látogatásban, akkor a gyulavári kastély parkja kínál aktív kikapcsolódást tanösvényeivel. Esetleg átruccanhatunk Békéscsabára , a kolbász fővárosába is.

Összességében elmondható, hogy Gyula tökéletes kikapcsolódást és maradandó élményt nyújt minden odalátogató számára, ezért cikkünk sem lehet teljes, hiszen a helyi Tourinform Iroda (Kossuth utca 7. ) további szervezett programokat is nyújt ( pálinkafesztivál , pálinkatúra, hajózás a Kőrösökön, városnéző kisvonat helyi legendákkal, húsipari kiállítás, stb.).
