Anthargange is in the Kolar district of Karnataka, only about 70 km from Bengaluru. The mountains in this hill station are at an altitude of 1,712 metres above sea level. Its name, which translates to ‘Ganges from the deep’, refers to the perennial spring that flows through the rocks from the middle of the mountains.

The surroundings of Mangalore are quite ideal for picnics and one such perfect location is Pilikula Nisargadhama, which is some 15 kilometres away. Spread over an area of 370 acres, Pilikula Nisargadhama or Pilikula, is one of the most preferred picnic spots near the city as it is a picturesque hamlet of Vamanjoor where rich wildlife can be experienced. One can find scads of wildlife species here and there is a botanical garden, a cageless zoo, where Tigers, Leopards, Bears and a variety of reptiles and snakes can be seen. A golf course within premises can also be found.

St. Aloysius Church

St. Aloysius Church in Mangalore is known for its marvellous architecture and interiors. Located in Kodailbail, on the Lighthouse Hill, the church was built in 1880 and features unique paintings by the Italian artist Antonio Moscheni covering most of the walls. The paintings depict Aloysius’s life to whom the chapel and adjacent college are dedicated. One can see several ceiling frescoes of various saints in Christianity and of course spend some time in quietude here. Another attraction of the place is its location as it allows one to get a picturesque view of the Arabian Sea.

Do not confuse this Sultan’s Battery with the one in Wayanad District of Kerala. This Sultan’s Battery is a watch tower which is located some 4 kilometres from Mangalore at a place called Boloor. The watch tower was constructed in the era of the emperor Tipu Sultan in 1784 AD and is said to be built with the same stones of 23 churches destroyed by Tipu Sultan. Though it is a watch tower but it looks much like a fort with mounting places for cannon. There is an underground storage area under the tower which was once used for storing gunpowder. If one climbs up to the top, he is guaranteed a panoramic view of Arabian Sea. This place is a blend of natural and manmade beauty. It is now a nearly deserted place with a few shacks and a boating club nearby, but is gathering popularity among tourists because of the pervading eternal bliss of nature. However, as the location is somewhat secluded, it is recommended to take security measures.

At this Hare Krishna ashram, which was established by its American guru who’s been surfing since 1963, devotees follow a daily ritual of puja (prayers), chanting, meditation and vegetarian diet in between catching barrels. Although one can surf all year round, the best time would be May to June and September to October. All are welcome to visit and try their hands at surfing but it’s important to be aware that it’s strictly a place of worship and there are guidelines to abide by, including abstinence from meat, alcohol, tobacco and sex during the stay.

24. Forum Fiza Mall

Forum Fiza Mall was inaugurated on 24 May 2007. It is located on the ground floor of Hampankatta and was developed by Prestige Constructions. The Thousand Pillar Temple is the most popular tourist attraction in Mangalore. This temple is a splendid piece of architecture built by the Hoysala dynasty in the 12th century. It’s famous for its intricate carvings and pillars, made using black granite. The temple is also known as Dakshina Kashi because it houses many temples dedicated to different Hindu deities.

Located in Moodabidri town near Mangalore city, Thousand Pillar Temple’s main deity is Lord Jain Chandranathaswamy (the Moon God). Since it has 1000 pillars, it is called ‘Sasana Basadi’ or ‘Yekkare Basadi’ (thousand pillar temple).

27. Jalalabad Fort

The Jalalabad Fort is one of the famous sightseeing places in Mangalore. Tipu Sultan built it in 1792 on top of the hill that overlooks the sea. The fort was established to keep a watch on the invading forces from Malabar, which was under British control at that time. You can see many cannons and a huge water tank inside the fort.

28. Aloysius Chapel

The Aloysius Chapel is a Roman Catholic chapel located on the Loyola Hall campus of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, Karnataka. Built in the Gothic Revival style by Jesuit priests between 1899 and 1901, it was designed by Father A. Brouwet of Mangalore and described as a “jewel of Mangalorean architecture”. The church was built to honour Christian martyrs from the region.

The church is a designated heritage building called “one of the most beautiful churches in South India”.

29. Kadri Hill Park

Kadri Hill Park is one of the famous picnic spots in Mangalore. This park is located on top of a hill estimated to be 300m high. The park has got a lot of greenery and various species of animals and birds.

The main attraction for the tourists in this park is the statue of Lord Buddha which is constructed on the top of a small hill inside the park. There are many gardens and play areas inside the park.

The view from this hill is mesmerising; you can see a picturesque view of Mangalore, the Arabian Sea and TannirBhavi Beach from here.

30. New Mangalore Port

Mangalore Port lies on the estuary of the Gurpur river, which is a tributary of the Netravati River. Mangalore Port is India’s seventh-largest PortPort in terms of cargo volume handled.

The PortPort was constructed to export coffee, grown extensively in Karnataka and the Western Ghats regions due to its good soil and climatic conditions. The port is under India’s Ministry of Shipping and has been accorded with Navratna status by the Department of Public Enterprises. The port is governed by a Board of Trustees having the chairman and 12 trustees nominated from various fields.

1. BR Hills

No introduction needed, the Biligiriranga Hills, aka the BR Hills, is one of the most scenic hill stations in Karnataka connecting the Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats. Situated in Chamrajnagar, BR Hills is home to Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary. The hills are blessed with Cauvery and Kapila rivers meandering through and thus a great place to go rafting, fishing, and coracle boat riding. Not to mention, the beauty and tranquility of the place are absolutely breathtaking.

2. Kemmanagundi

Nestled in the natural beauty of Chikmagalur, is the quaint hill station of Kemmanagundi that lies on the Baba Budan range. You will spot waterfalls like Hebbe and Kallathi which are said to have therapeutic benefits and the ability to cure cold and skin problems. 4. Chikmagalur

The picturesque town lies at the base of Mullayanagiri range from where the river Yagachi originates. Chikmagalur literally translates to ‘younger daughter’s town’ in Kannada.
