REVIEW: Happy Together Tour at Palace Theatre

Amy Modesti

Musicians from the Happy Together Tour 2023 on stage at the show's finale at the Palace Theatre in Albany, NY, Tuesday, August 1,2023.

ALBANY – For 14 years, the Happy Together tour has brought people together to reminisce on the good ol’ days when life was easy and music was played at high school sock hops. Baby boomers, born before the 1960 grew up listening to songs that became Top 40 Billboard hits. Songs, like the title of this concert tour and “Sugar Sugar,” remain hip and loved to this day by boomers and younger generations who have discovered the songs on the radio, though pop culture or their parents.

Since 1989 the musical preferences centered around 90’s pop icons N*SYNC, Backstreet Boys, Brittney Spears and 98 Degrees. At the time, these teen idols became sensations and I grew to love them.

At the Palace Theatre, The Cowsills, The Classics IV, The Vogues, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Little Anthony, and The Turtles with Ron Dante, front man of The Archies, all performed. Each were acts which my parents grew up listening to.

The voices during the Tuesday, Aug. 1 show were still at their prime as if one heard them 50 years ago on an album for the first time. Their stage presence and musical command was impressive, admirable, and entertaining.

The songs played during the show remain relevant now. “Tears On My Pillow” from Little Anthony was covered by Sha-Na-Na and heard in the film “Grease”, “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies was used as the theme song for the TV show Cake Boss, and “The Rain, The Park, & Other Things” of The Cowsills was included in the “Dumb and Dumber” movie soundtrack.

Life often imitates art, not only out of flattery, but also in the form of music. Musicians sometimes cover songs that turn into the pinnacle hit of their career. For example, Linda Rondstadt covered Little Anthony’s “Hurt So Bad” and the Atlanta Rhythm Section did  a rendition of the Classics IV “Spooky” and are remembered for the covers more than the originals.

Having heard these acts perform live for the first time, it was difficult for me to pinpoint the top moments of the tour. Maybe it was watching 83-year-old Little Anthony sing and dance to “Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop”, hearing “The Vogues sing the gorgeous “You Are My Special Angel” in perfect harmony, or dancing to “Sugar Sugar” with my mom who grew up reading “The Archies” comics and watched the TV show.

Perhaps it was hearing my Mom’s response to certain songs that made her get emotional, feel goosebumps, and dance made the overall experience priceless.

A week prior to the Happy Together Tour, I had a phone conversation with Paul Cowsill, the lead singer of The Cowsills Band. Paul, his brother Bill, and sister Susan, were one of six acts to perform and were the opening act of the tour.

The Cowsills Band, who were the inspiration for the Partridge Family TV show, came out with top hits as “The Rain, The Park And Other Things”, “We Can Fly”, “Indian Lake”, “Love American Style”, and “Hair”.

Paul reflected upon his return visit to Albany and the experience he had on the Palace Theatre stage in an email on Thursday, Aug. 3.

“What a night we had at the Palace Theatre. We sang our hits and the audience seem(ed) to love hearing the songs from their past. It was great getting back to Albany, where we hadn’t been back to since the 90s,” he wrote.

According to Paul, who has participated for the past nine tours, said every artist on the tour loved going out on the tour.

“The tour is crazy good. Our demographic, our audiences never had MTV and they never had VH1..They went to concerts and they’re still going to concerts, so as long as they’re going, we’re going and we’re really in it together.” Cowsill said.

Paul added that he, along with his siblings Bill and Susan are touring more than they did when they were children, booking 61 shows total for 2023. The band will continue to do one-night shows for the Happy Together Tour through Sept. 1 and will extend into next year.

“These people are excited that we’re coming to their town and they get there and everybody’s doing a great job.” he said. “And so the people feel like they’re back in their teens.”

Even millennials, Gen-Z, and Gen Alpha (the younger generation) fans who grew up listening to the oldies alongside their parents are also attending the Happy Together Tour.

“We are getting a lot of younger people at these shows and we always go, oh, were you wrangled into coming? And the kids go, no, I was raised on this music.” Cowsill said. “So all of us as parents, we’re continuing to play The Beatles…having those kids get exposed to the music that we grew up with and they love it. They just love it.”

Paul, Bob, and Susan Cowsill continue to reach out to their audience through music tours, shows with their family band, as well as their podcast. “People are hip to everything,” Paul Cowsill said.

In fact, the Cowsills podcast has 107 shows that feature a famous musician from the classic rock world to relive their heydays and released their new album, Rhythm of The World, last year and the vinyl album edition was released this year on Record Store Day.

Once the band finishes the Happy Together tour during the first week of September, the three Cowsills will continue touring, but adding more family members. The three are planning to take part in the Flower Power Cruise in March 2024 to celebrate the music of the 1960’s and a 1970’s. They are also in the studio recording new music.

Paul Cowsill encourages fans and individuals who have not seen the Happy Together Tour or the bands themselves to attend the show while it’s happening.

“People are just loving this show and they’re telling everybody who hasn’t gone to the show to go to the show.” Paul said. “You better see it before you’re dead, because this is the show to see. They (the promoters) keep booking it so we’ll see how long she goes.”

Featuring The Turtles, Little Anthony (“Tears on My Pillow,” “Goin’ Out of My Head”), Gary Puckett & The Union Gap (“Young Girl”), The Classics IV (“Spooky,” “Stormy”), The Vogues (“Turn Around, Look at Me,” “Five O’Clock World”) and The Cowsills (“Hair,” “The Rain, The Park & Other Things”).

Happy Together features The Turtles, Little Anthony, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Classics IV, The Vogues, and The Cowsills!

THE TURTLES Very few rock performers have remained as vital through the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s as have Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. Initially they made their mark with the Turtles, then they joined Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention, and then they glided into their own Flo & Eddie persona, dishing out records that have encompassed a multitude of personalities. They’ve always been smart enough to have responded to the latest worthwhile trends in a fashion that has yielded an abundance of quality records, and more than their share of hits. This history will attempt to add a depth and perspective to Kaylan’s and Volman’s unique musical journey, one that, perhaps encapsulates the post-Beatles rock era like no other. This text was originally a companion piece to Rhino’s exquisitely packaged, executive version of “The Turtles Greatest Hits” (RNLP 160). Let’s pause just for a second to make the totally subjective case that the Turtles were the closest America ever came to having a Beatles. Others, like the Lovin’ Spoonful, Rascals and Beach Boys, certainly had as many hits, but the Turtles hits were better conceived and arranged and, like the Beatles, transcended so many styles.

The Rascals lacked the heavy guitars that were the sound of the day; the Spoonful were limited in approach, and didn’t last that long anyway; and the Beach Boys were too square for too long, and somehow seemed tied to a pre-Beatles era. Suffice to say that, even the Turtles more minor hits, the ones which failed to make it onto “The Turtles Greatest Hits.”, all sound like first class records. This will provide a necessary primer for understanding Kaylan’s and Volman’s crazy world, so you’ll be better prepared when the duo hit you with their next record, as their “history” continues. Two guys from Westchester. The one with the curly hair and glasses, and the other with the beard. That’s how Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (AKA Flo and Eddie) refer to themselves. Two slightly bewildered kids thrust into the fast lane of rock ‘n’ roll stardom -hits, fame, national tours, hanging out with the Beatles, joining the Mothers of Invention, acting in the “200 Motels” movie, and on and on … Two guys from Westchester.

Little Anthony and the Imperials is a  r hythm and blues/soul/doo-wop vocal group   from  New York ,  first active in the 1950s. Lead  singer   Jerome Anthony “Little Anthony” Gourdine was noted for his high-pitched  falsetto voice ,  influenced by  Jimmy   Scott . The group was inducted into the  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame  on April 4, 2009, 23 years after the group’s first year of eligibility for induction, waiting longer than any other artist for the honor.

GARY PUCKETT has performed on more than thirty network television shows and prime time specials during his career, even adding a command performance for the President and Prince Charles at the White House. The Union Gap disbanded in the seventies. In 1974, “Young Girl” was reissued in England where it received a silver record award for attaining a top five position on the pop charts, several years after its initial release.

Gary continues to tour nationally & internationally. Gary currently resides in Clearwater, FL with his wife and family.

THE VOGUES From the mid1960’s into the 70’s, “The Vogues” could be heard on radio stations coast to coast. They were also featured on the top television shows of the time like, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Mike Douglas Show, multiple times with Dick Clark’s iconic American Bandstand, and many more.

The Vogues unique sound was instantly recognizable and memorable. It was a lively fresh rock ’n roll with an American style that pierced the British invasion.” Their first song to top the charts at #4 and capture hearts was “You’re The One” written by Petula Clark in 1965.

Who can forget “Five O’clock World?” Not only was this a top 5 single in 1965, it remains a top request by fans today.  In 1997, comedian and actor Drew Carey adopted this as the theme song for his very popular television sitcom, adding new fuel to the Vogues fire.

Military Veterans, particularly those who served during the Vietnam conflict, remember how Armed Forces Radio regularly featured the Vogues hits including, “You Are My Special Angel?” You may recall, Bobby Helms first hit the airwaves with this unforgettable lyric, but the Vogues took it to another level using lush orchestration combined with powerful vocal harmonies to make it even more memorable.

Also appearing in 1968, “Turn Around Look at Me” took the world by storm. It was also an orchestral love ballad that established this new sound for the Vogues and firmly locked it in time.

Four gold records,  two platinum albums, and fifty plus years later, The Vogues continue to sellout audiences at concerts around the country.

The Vogues were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001, and remain one of the top vocal groups on the oldies concert circuit today.

The Classics IV , one of the most popular and influential pop groups of the 60s and 70s, originated in Jacksonville, Florida. They achieved phenomenal success with hits “Spooky,” “Stormy,” “Traces,” and Everyday With You Girl, all of which sold well over a million copies and were awarded gold and platinum discs by the Recording Industry of America. All four hits appeared in the 1977 film “The Chicken Chronicles” in addition to various other movie soundtracks including the hit HBO Series “Six Feet Under: By the 1970s The Classics IV accumulated a total of 16 Billboard chart hits, solidifying them as a hit making pop group and crediting The Classics IV with the development of “Southern Soft Rock.” To date The Classics IV have recorded 17 albums including “Spooky,” “Lil Bit of Gold” “Traces” and “Golden Greats.” In 1993 The Classics IV were inducted into The Georgia Music Hall of Fame. The Classics IV popularity is stronger than ever performing in a variety of venues to rave revues and receiving back to back invitations to join hugely popular Happy Together Tour. The group continues captivating audiences with their professionalism, good humor, and ingratiating personalities. In 2011 The Classics IV returned to the studio with the release their album, “A New Horizon,” blending the old with the new. 2015 saw the first ever “Live Album” with the release of “One Stormy Night – The Classics IV Live At The Ritz” and in 2020 the group received great revues and airplay with the first ever Christmas release “All I want For Christmas Is You”.

THE COWSILLS  Back in the 1960’s, four brothers who wanted to be The Beatles formed a band called The Cowsills. The original Cowsills consisted of Bill on guitar, Bob on guitar and organ, Barry on bass and John on drums. Early gigs were at school dances and churches around their home in Newport, RI. Eventually, as their harmonic sound was perfected, they got a regular gig on Bannisters Wharf in Newport where they would sing Beatle songs hour after hour. Early recordings were released by the four brothers on Joda and Mercury Records. Barbara (“mini-mom”) joined the group to record The Rain, The Park and Other Things and shortly thereafter 7 year old Susan and brother, Paul, were added to the group. They were signed by MGM records and the group began it’s climb to the top!

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's Relationship Timeline

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill wed in 1996 and share three daughters

Contributor, PEOPLE

Country music superstars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have music to thank for their decades-long love story.

The "Don't Take the Girl" singer and Hill met for the first time in 1994 at a gig in Nashville. At the time, they were both seeing other people but as fate would have it, McGraw and Hill's paths crossed again two years later and the rest is history.

Hill served as McGraw's opening act on his 1996 Spontaneous Combustion tour and the pair wed later that year. The country artists now share three daughters.

Here's a look at Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's relationship, from their first meeting to starting a family.

1994: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill meet for the first time

McGraw and Hill first crossed paths in Nashville at a Country Radio Seminar showcase for new talent. At the time, the "Highway Don't Care" crooner was in a relationship with Kristine Donahue, and Hill was engaged to Scott Hendricks.

1996: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill go on tour together

The couple really connected during McGraw's Spontaneous Combustion tour in 1996.

"We were young and silly and goo-goo-eyed in love," McGraw later told PEOPLE of their initial spark. The pair started dating after they each ended their relationships with their respective partners.

Hill later defended how she and McGraw got their start , telling PEOPLE, "If someone is going to judge my character because I was engaged to somebody and then I left him for somebody else — 'Oh, OK, now she's a slut and a bad person' — I can't control that. But I wasn't about to let Tim slip through my hands."

June 26, 1996: Tim McGraw proposes to Faith Hill on stage

The musician popped the question while on tour. He shared the romantic details of the proposal years later in an October 2015 video.

"We were in the dressing room, here, June 26, 1996, and it was raining and stuff and we'd been on tour for a while together, and I joked around with her about getting married. And so I looked at her, grabbed her by the hands, and dropped forward [on my knees] onstage," he recalled. "She said, 'We're at a country music festival in a trailer house, and you're asking me to marry you?' And I said, 'Yeah.' So I went onstage … When I came back offstage, [I saw] a Sharpie with lipstick kisses all over it, saying, 'Yes! I'm gonna be your wife.' "

October 6, 1996: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill get married

A few months after they got engaged, McGraw and Hill wed on Oct. 6, 1996.

January 1997: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill reveal they're expecting a baby

Shortly after their wedding, McGraw and Hill arrived at the American Music Awards together. During the show, the "Way You Love Me" singer showed off a growing baby bump.

May 5, 1997: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's first baby is born

The couple became parents on May 5, 1997, when they welcomed their daughter Grace .

August 12, 1998: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill welcome another baby

McGraw and Hill got pregnant again not long after the birth of their first child. They welcomed their second baby, a girl named Maggie , on Aug. 12, 1998.

July 2000: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill go on their first official tour together

Although touring is what brought them together in the first place, McGraw and Hill had never actually gone on an official tour together, since Hill was technically his opening act during the Spontaneous Combustion tour. Their first joint tour, Soul2Soul, kicked off in July 2000.

December 6, 2001: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill welcome their third baby

About a year after they completed their Soul2Soul tour, the couple welcomed their third daughter, Audrey , on Dec. 6, 2001. Audrey was born eight weeks early and spent a few days in neonatal intensive care after her birth. Hill later told PEOPLE the separation was "the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life."

April 2006: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill go on tour again

The parents of three went on their second Soul2Soul tour in 2006. They opened up about their work style to PEOPLE with Hill saying, " He's the big dreamer ."

To which McGraw replied, "Then she has to do all the details, come in and clean up my mess," with Hill adding, "With a lot of love."

October 2006: Tim McGraw gets a star on the Walk of Fame with Faith Hill by his side

McGraw was honored for his illustrious career in October 2006 — the same year he and Hill celebrated a decade of marriage. The singer was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Hill was by his side at the ceremony.

November 12, 2008: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill perform together at the CMT Awards

The couple wowed fans with a touching duet of their song "I Need You" at the CMT Awards in 2008. Ahead of their performance, Hill said that they would maybe "get a burger or something" after the show, while McGraw suggested heading "to Waffle House."

June 2014: Tim McGraw opens up about his sobriety and the role Faith Hill played in it

The Billboard Music Award winner sat down with Men's Health for an interview in 2014 — seven years after he got sober . He told the outlet his wife, Hill, played a major role in his decision quit drinking.

"When your wife tells you it's gone too far, that's a big wake-up call," he said. "That, and realizing you're gonna lose everything you have."

October 5, 2016: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill announce another tour

The couple surprised fans in October 2016 when they announced they were bringing back their Soul2Soul tour . "We are going back on the road on tour," Hill told a Nashville crowd. "We are going to go from side to side, south to north and around the globe!"

McGraw and Hill's Soul2Soul World Tour kicked off on April 7 the following year, 11 years after their last tour together.

February 10, 2017: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show together

McGraw and Hill appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show together in February 2017, where they opened up about their children. The couple confessed during the appearance that their daughters were getting older, but they weren't quite ready for them to start dating.

"Look, you don't want to be mean, but when someone's taking your daughter somewhere, you want to induce a healthy amount of respect — and fear," McGraw said, previously sharing with the show's host that he leaves a sledgehammer out where his daughters' dates can see it.

In his Grit & Grace: Train the Mind, Train the Body, Own Your Life , McGraw once again discussed his sobriety journey and the role his wife played in it. The country star revealed that Hill gave him an ultimatum before he became sober.

"When things happen and you succeed beyond your wildest dreams and you're playing all these great shows and the parties are going on," he told Hoda Kotb on the Today show. "Then you're married and you have kids. And all of a sudden your wife looks at you and says, 'You know, you're getting a little overboard and you need to make some decisions.' It makes a big impact on you."

That same month, they celebrated McGraw's 15th studio album, Here on Earth , in a big way. They threw a party with family , which Hill captured in a social media video. In the clip, the Mississippi native and her husband danced to "Damn Sure Do."

August 25, 2021: Tim McGraw credits Faith Hill for his wake-up call

Speaking with Esquire about his decision to get sober in 2008, McGraw revealed that he was "getting out of [bed] and going to the liquor cabinet and taking a big shot at 8:00 in the morning and thinking, 'I have to wake the kids up.' "

He called that his last straw, saying that he immediately went to Hill and told her what was happening.

"I went straight to my wife and said, 'This is where I'm at.' I was scared," he remembered. "She just grabbed me and hugged me and changed my life."

He credited her with helping him stay strong and sober.

"My wife always says, 'You're not scared of anything.' I say, 'Ehhh, one thing. I'm looking at it right now,' " he said. "I didn't know love could feel so good. Was it an emotion? Was it a lifestyle? Was it an imaginary thing? But love is all of those things."

McGraw went on, "Love is being angry. Love is not talking for a day. Love is getting in each other's face. Love is accepting that I'm wrong. Love is a 360-degree thing. It's not linear. They always say you're not supposed to fight in front of your kids. Everybody fights in front of their kids. That's part of the deal."

In honor of 25 years of marriage to Hill, McGraw reflected on his proposal and the wedding that followed. He called it "the best day of my life." He also shared some new details, that fans may not have known before.

"25 years later and it's still the best day of my life. Thanks for going on this journey with me. Love you Faith ❤️," he wrote, adding that it took him a "few times" to convince her to accept his proposal.

McGraw continued, "We had dated for a while. I actually asked her to marry me quite a few times and she kept saying no. She said, 'I'm not going to get involved with another country singer, it's just not going to work out.' "

He said he finally decided to get down on a knee during a country music festival, hopeful that Hill would accept.

"They had these trailer houses set up. I'm getting ready to go onstage, and I had this sort of case that had this big mirror in it. She's standing there, and we're talking, and I said, 'Look, let's get married," he remembered. "And she says, 'You're asking me to marry you at a country music festival in a trailer house?' And I said, 'Well, it's pretty apropos if you think about it.' She goes, 'Are you serious?' And I said, 'Well, yeah, I'm serious.' "

He returned to the dressing room to find a message on the mirror from his future wife accepting his proposal.

"And we still have that mirror. And it was the best day of my life, that's for sure," McGraw said.

December 10, 2021: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill talk about becoming empty nesters

Things changed in a big way for McGraw and Hill after their youngest daughter, Audrey, graduated in 2020. The pair were officially empty nesters and they opened up about the transition to PEOPLE in December 2021.

"You're used to getting up in the morning, taking kids to school, going to softball practices and basketball practices and cheerleader practices and all of a sudden all that's gone when your last one leaves," he told PEOPLE.

He noted that since their daughters left home, their house in Nashville has quieted down significantly. He looked back fondly on their lives together as a family of five.

"I miss the afternoons because Faith would always make sure something was cooking when they would come home from school," he said. "I miss them coming in and smelling what mom's cooking and being excited about having dinner. I miss the energy around. There were times when we had about 15 teenage girls in our house talking about boys and life and everything going on. We're still a really close family; we talk all the time. But it's difficult when your kids leave. All of a sudden they don't need you as much anymore. And I think it's probably more difficult for Mom."

How Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Relationship Has Changed After Spending Tour Break Together

preview for Taylor Swift’s Iconic Career Evolution

As Taylor Swift gets ready for the next leg of her international Eras Tour, she is also preparing to part ways with boyfriend Travis Kelce again. The pair have been dating since 2023, and have had to manage very different and distant obligations. Luckily, a source says that “all the time they’ve spent together recently” in between tour dates has “deepened their bond.”

The source added that the couple took “a trip up the California coast” after Swift’s new album release of The Tortured Poets Department to “celebrate privately,” saying, “They’re making the most of the time they have together.”

The pair were not entirely alone—they were seen in Carmel-by-the-Sea with friends Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper, as well as Kelce’s mom, Donna.

Another source previously said that during this break from work, the pair were “focused on rest and recuperation and relaxing at home and having low-key and chill time together.”

“They are enjoying movie nights in her home theater, catching up on films and shows they’ve missed,” they continued, explaining that the couple is working on “scheduling” the upcoming long distance and their various projects so that they can “see each other as much as possible” because they “don’t want to spend too much time apart.”

Kelce is spending the NFL offseason in Los Angeles after the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl win in February, taking time to see Swift in both Singapore and Australia when she was performing. He is currently filming a new game show called Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity.
