THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO KEY WEST, FLORIDA

Key West is a tiny island located at the southern tip of the famed archipelago known as the Florida Keys. Renowned for its coral reefs, diving, snorkeling, and laid-back, vacation mode mentality, Key West attracts sun seekers from all over the world.

Key West is approximately 100 miles from Miami, and is only 90 miles to Havana, Cuba. Known as the southernmost city of the continental United States, Key West offers crystal clear waters, great weather, an array of watersports, excellent seafood, and a vibrant bar scene.

With Jimmy Buffet’s iconic song “Margaritaville” playing in my mind as the theme song, I had been dreaming of visiting this seemingly carefree destination for years. Key West is a perfect relaxed beach destination for couples, group trips, and families. It is truly a little island paradise, and and is easily accessible by car from Miami.

Here’s my ultimate guide to Key West with the best hotels, tours, beaches, nightlife, picturesque locations, hidden gems, and more!

My Experience In Key West

I once saw a photo of a chicken standing on a white sand beach next to a palm tree, with crystal blue water in the background. That image stuck in my mind as epitomizing Key West. I want to go there I said to myself. I want that laid-back island vibe to soak into my soul.

Ten years later, in February 2024, I arrived in Key West in the pouring rain. It was cold, overcast, and windy but the moment I stepped inside a colorful restaurant on Duval Street and saw frozen margaritas and shrimp and grits on the menu, all my worries began to fade away.

Key West is the opposite of pretentious. The vibe in Key West is: flip flops, beach bars, live music, chickens, cats, and horses in the street, salt in your hair, sun on your skin, the friendliest people, and the prettiest aqua-green ocean washing your worries away.

Key West is a destination centered around fun. It’s a tiny 2 x 4 mile island and yet there are over 300 bars to choose from! Around every turn, there is some new variation of fun going on and you can’t help but get caught up in the blissful mentality.

There are so many places to visit in the world, but Key West is a place I know I will return to. I love the laid-back island vibe it exudes and I can’t wait to visit in the balmy heat of summer when it’s so warm a bikini is the only thing I will need to pack. Paradise found.

Where I Stayed In Key West

Ideally situated, overlooking Sunset Pier and the crystal blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Ocean Key Resort & Spa is one of the island’s top luxury destinations. Raked ‘Top 10 Resorts in the Florida Keys’ by Condé Nast Traveler and ‘Top 15 Resorts in Florida’ by Travel + Leisure for 2023, Ocean Key Resort has been a favorite of locals and tourists for years.

Located next to Mallory Square in historic Old Town Key West, Ocean Key Resort provides the ideal home away from home to explore everything Key West has to offer. From the resort, you can easily explore downtown Key West on foot or walk down the street to Key West Harbor where an array of water tours await you.

All the rooms at Ocean Key Resort feature local art and eclectic hand-painted furnishings. Each room comes with a private balcony and view of the Gulf of Mexico or Key West’s historic Duval Street. Highlights include Sunset Pier, a high-end spa, the cute mini Rum Bar in the lobby, oversized showers, and delicious daily breakfasts. I loved how spotlessly clean the rooms and property were.

I also loved the dreamy Liquid Pool Bar & Lounge overlooking Sunset Pier and the ocean. This is the perfect place to spend an afternoon enjoying cocktails in the sunshine with a stunning view of the aqua sea. The decadent dinner I experienced at Ocean Key Resort’s upscale, romantic, oceanfront restaurant, Hot Tin Roof , was top-notch and not to be missed.

I would definitely stay at Ocean Key Resort & Spa again next time I visit the Keys. I highly recommend it as an ideal hotel to book for a special occasion and for exploring the best of Key West.

Top 12 Things To Do In Key West

Key West is a tiny island that is only 8 square miles. But there is a lot to do and see here. This is by no means a comprehensive list of attractions, but this will get you started. H ere are my suggestions for 12 things not to miss in Key West .

1) Stroll Historic Oldtown Key West

The Key West Historic District encompasses approximately 4,000 acres and contains 187 historic buildings and one structure. Here you’ll find cute souvenir shops, museums, restaurants, and a sea of jam-packed bars offering island cocktails.

Duval Street is the main drag of downtown, running north and south from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. On Duval Street bustling frozen daiquiri bars can be found around almost every turn, set amidst eclectic shops, Victorian-style homes, back alley speakeasy bars, pubs, and seafood restaurants.

2) Watch the Sunset at Mallory Square

This iconic square becomes a festival of activity every evening, with street vendors, carnival performers, and a sea of restaurants and music all around. Mallory Square is the perfect place to enjoy a famous Key West sunset.

3) Take Photos at the Southernmost Point

To prove you’ve visited the most southerly point of the United States, get your camera out and have your photo taken at this commemorative monument. As with most Instagrammable places, you may want to skip this if you don’t like waiting in line for a photo op.

4) Take a Boat Trip

To get out on the water day or night, rent a boat or take a boat trip on Key West’s iconic waters. There are an array of tour operators to choose from but one good one to check out is Honest Eco Tours . They offer catamaran tours, power boat tours, and tours on a unique boat they built called the Squid .

5) Visit Dry Tortugas National Park

Accessible only by ferry ride or sea-plane, Dry Tortugas National Park , is located 70 miles from Key West, and comprises seven small islands teeming with life and natural beauty.

Snorkel or swim in the coral reef and take a historic tour of Fort Jefferson. Walking on the walls of this giant brick structure is a highlight.

6) Visit Historic Fort Zachary State Park

This is the southernmost state park in the United States and houses an impressive civil-war-era fort and one of the best beaches in the Keys. This beach is perfect for families as there are so many activities to do such as snorkeling and kayaking. It is also one of the prettiest beaches to sunbathe on.

7) Enjoy Live Music on Sunset Pier

Overlooking the crystal blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Sunset Pier is a relaxed dockside seafood eatery at the Ocean Key Resort  with water views, drinks & live music.

8) Watersports

Offering the third largest coral reef system in the world and the year-round mild temperatures and sunshine, Key West is an ideal spot to do an array of watersports.  You can kayak through the mangroves, jetski around islets, paddleboard, and snorkel in the crystal clear ocean.

This three hour snorkeling adventure tour takes you out on a catamaran to all the best spots around Key West. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary protects North America’s only coral barrier reef.

9) Take a Tour of Ernest Hemingway’s House

Ernest Hemingway lived in this property from 1931 to 1939 and you can take a 30-minute tour of the house and grounds. Keep an eye out for descendants of Hemingway’s six-toed cat prowling around the grounds.

10) Relax on the beach

Key West is the perfect place for some rest and relaxation with white sand beaches, crystal clear waters to cool off in, and sunny weather. Some of the best beaches include the popular Smathers Beach, Higgs Beach, Rest Beach, and South Beach.

11) Visit Truman’s Little White House

This historic building was President Harry Truman’s ‘Winter White House’ and later served as a sunny retreat for Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Clinton. The admission price also includes a tour of the property.

12) Take a Ride on the Overseas Highway

Unless you take a boat to Key West, necessity will ensure you take a ride on this famous road at some point during your trip. This feat of engineering is an attraction in its own right. This stretch of road is often called “the highway that goes to sea.” It encompasses 113 miles of roadway and 42 bridges from Key Largo to Key West including the famous 7-mile bridge (pictured below).

For this trip, I booked a Daytrip  private driver to take me from South Beach to Key West so that I could enjoy the amazing drive! The drive takes about 3.5 hours and you can e xpect breathtaking views as you hop from key to key and marvel at the coral islets and crystal-clear water.

From roadside shacks to fine-dining restaurants, you’ll enjoy an array of fresh, flavorful dining options in Key West.

Here are our suggestions for 10 of the best restaurants in Key West.

  • Hot Tin Roof – Located inside Ocean Key Resort , this popular oceanfront restaurant specializes in exquisite ‘Floribbean’ dishes that are a fusion of the best flavors that exemplify local cuisines. This Key’s staple is perfect for a romantic date night or special occasion, just be sure to book in advance as it gets busy. I dined here and it was exquisite. If you like mushrooms, the mushroom appetizer is amazing.
  • Willie’s Chicken Shack – New Orleans’ staple fried chicken shack paired with frozen daiquiris on Duval Street, what’s not to love.
  • Moondog Cafe and Bakery – This pretty bakery on Whitehead Street draws the crowds in with the delectable aromas of their gorgeous fresh bakes but you can also stay for brunch, lunch, dinner and happy hour!
  • Seaside Cafe Key West – Located in the boutique hotel, The Mansion on the Sea, this cafe is famous for its iconic lobster pizza and epic mojitos.
  • Glazed Donuts – Not quite a restaurant but not your average donut stand. Refined and elevated donuts with creative flavors are the norm here and donuts are usually sold out within a few hours. Make sure you try the key lime pie-flavored ones!
  • Cafe Marquesa – This fine dining restaurant located in the Marquesa Hotel offers an exquisite setting for special occasion dinners. Don’t let the refined interior fool you though, the menu is down-to-earth with a perfect blend of innovation and classic.
  • Blue Heaven – This laid-back joint was opened in 1992 by an artist and writer and it’s been a local institution ever since. Offering Caribbean flavors and colorful decor along with live music, it’s super romantic and the perfect place to relax and unwind.
  • El Siboney – For authentic Cuban cuisine, this family-friendly restaurant in the heart of Old Town is the place to be. Try the Cuban Mix Sandwich and be transported to the Caribbean.
  • Garbo’s Grill – This Korean BBQ street vendor has a small menu of classic and fusion dishes that packs a lot of punch.
  • Alonzo’s Oyster Bar – This laidback seafood restaurant prides itself on being the only restaurant in Key West that has water on three sides, but we think it should boast more about its delicious crab – which is hands down the best crab I’ve had anywhere! I’m happy to confirm that they also live up to their name in the oyster department and have excellent Oysters Rockefeller. Visit between 4:30 and 6pm to take advantage of their famous daily happy hour.

The Best Bars in Key West

Key West is known to have some of the best bars in America! With over 300 bars to choose from there is truly something for everyone. On famed Duval Street, you’ll find live music joints, eclectic speakeasy bars, pubs, frozen daiquiri bars, beach bars, pool halls, dance clubs, and everything in between.

There’s a bar and a party in Key West for every theme and every day of your vacation. From my experience, here’s a list of 10 best of the best bars in Key West .

  • Captain Tony’s Saloon – A quintessentially Key West bar steeped in history that’ll always have a barstool free for a cold one after a long day in the sun. If you’re feeling brave, try their signature Pirate Punch.
  • General Horseplay – Priding themselves on craft cocktails, go there for the spicy margaritas and stay for the tomfoolery.
  • Pickles Pub Sandbar – This modern sports bar serves cool drinks and comfort food, and showcases great live bands.
  • The Roost – This sophisticated hidden gem has happy hour from 12-6pm and specializes in unique craft cocktails and is a welcome refresher from the chaos and liveliness of Duval Street.
  • 22 & Co – If glitter, tutus and flamingoes are more your vibe, head to 22 & Co. This unicorn-inspired fun house offers fresh cocktails and magical vibes for a great night.
  • Hog’s Breath Saloon – This pub is a favorite hang of the locals and offers classic drinks with a superb program of live music.
  • Fogarty’s & The Flying Monkey Saloon – Located on Duval Street, this lively bar is well-known for its frozen cocktails – the frozen daiquiri isn’t for the faint-hearted.
  • Mary Ellen’s Bar & Kitchen – This lively and eccentric bar serves comfort food like gourmet grilled cheese and always has something going on at night – its charity vibrator races are a real local event!
  • Sunset Pier – Next to Mallory Square, this pier is a delight of music and festivities. Enjoy a Caribbean cocktail at the tiki bar and pull up a stool to enjoy the sunset view from the best seat in the house.
  • White Tarpon – Here you can have the famous Key Lime Martini while admiring sweeping views of the harbor.

The Best Time To Visit to Key West

During the winter months (November – February) the weather is cooler but pleasant at around 75-80 degrees; the water is 70-74 degrees. During the summer months, the weather is very hot and humid and there’s always the risk of the odd hurricane or storm disrupting your vacation.

The water temperature can also get to a not-so-refreshing 86 degrees, but if you want to swim in a tropical bath with plenty of colorful sea life, then head to Key West during the summer.

Due to the excessive summer heat, (which I love, but know many find unappealing) high season in Key West is during the winter months. So in winter expect high season prices and lots of tourists.

March to May is a good time to visit Key West if you want to take advantage of warm weather and fewer crowds.

How to Get to Key West

You can fly into Key West International Airport, but this option can be pricey. As a more affordable alternative, you can fly into Miami International Airport (MIA), rent a car and drive to the Keys.

I chose to hire a driver from Daytrip  to drive me from Miami to Key West so that I could fully enjoy the gorgeous views. The drive is easy and takes about 3.5 hours with no stops. But I recommend making a few stops along the way to explore other Keys and to take in the stunning scenery along the way.

Once in Key West, the city is very walkable but you can also cycle – many resorts have bicycles available to hire for you to do this. There’s also a hop-on, hop-off bus, and Uber. Or you can even rent a golf cart!

Key West Ultimate Guide Wrap Up

If you’re chasing a laid-back island vibe for your next vacation, I highly recommend checking out Key West. It’s a perfect long weekend getaway to add to your next Miami trip. Pack your flip-flops and your swimsuit and be ready for relaxed fun in the sun!

Florida Keys Itinerary: The Ultimate 5-Day Trip

Florida Keys Itinerary: The Ultimate 5-Day Trip

Oh the Florida Keys…

Full of so much natural beauty, rich history, and no shortage of great activities, there are many great ways to experience this unique destination. Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, heck you could easily spend a week in Key West alone! But in our opinion, the best way to experience the magic of the Florida Keys is too see them all by taking a road trip.

Behold, our ultimate 5-day itinerary through the Florida Keys!

DAY ONE: MIAMI to ISLAMORADA

When travelling to The Keys, you’ve got several options to get there including flying to Miami International, Key West International, as well as several cruise options from other locations in Florida. We arrived early in the morning in Miami, rented a car, and drove about an hour and a half south to the top of The Keys.

blog voyage key west

Our first stop on our Florida Keys itinerary was John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Located just past Key Largo,  John Pennekamp  is the first undersea park in the US and covers roughly 70 square miles of mangroves, coral reefs, and wildlife. We were truly impressed with how well managed the park is and the passion that the park employees have for protecting and sharing its natural wonder.

They offer various activities such as snorkeling, scuba, glass-bottom boat tours, as well as boat and kayak rentals. We opted for the snorkeling tour, which takes you on a half-hour boat ride out to the reef. During the boat ride, our tour leaders Doug and Dean did a great job of providing us with background on the park, what types of wildlife we might see out there, a safety briefing, several great nautical jokes, and even a snorkeling lesson for those who were first-timers.

At the reef, we saw countless tropical fish, colorful coral, someone even saw a sea turtle! We also got to check out the famous “Famous Christ of the Deep” statue, which was super cool to see. Overall this was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon, we can’t say enough about how great our guides were!

After working up an appetite snorkelling we checked into our room for the night at The Fisher Inn Resort to freshen up for dinner. Very recently renovated, the Fisher Inn is a modern, stylish and comfortable place right on water with various activities and boat access available. We loved what they’ve done with the place! An ideal spot to stay in Islamorada.

FLORIDA KEYS ITINERARY DAY TWO : ISLAMORADA to KEY WEST

An unassuming spot right off the highway, Robbie’s offers an eclectic mix of outdoor shops, food vendors and, our personal favorite, tarpon feeding. For those who don’t know, tarpon are MASSIVE sport fish that are spectacular to see swimming around and launching out of the water. What’s also cool about them is that they don’t have teeth, so you can buy a bucket of fish and feed the giants hanging out by the dock at Robbie’s.

It’s a bit adrenaline-pumping at first as these huge mouths come out of the water snatching the fish right out of your hands, but it’s unlike anything else. We liked it so much we got another two buckets of fish! Just watch out for the pesky pelicans 😛 Oh, and we saw a manatee come right up to the edge of the dock! It was wild.

blog voyage key west

After watching these giant creatures feed for so long, we started to get hungry ourselves, so we went for brunch at Robbie’s Marina restaurant, The Hungry Tarpon . A fantastic spot with amazing breakfast, we opted for the “alligator reef” Mexican scramble and the lobster frittata with hollandaise sauce (OMGGG wow!).

If you’re spending any time in Islamorada, Robbie’s Marina and The Hungry Tarpon are an absolute must.

We departed Robbie’s around noon and made our way down to Key West.

Upon arrival in Key West, we checked in to our home for the next three days,  The Southernmost Beach Resort . An absolutely immaculate resort, we could not have imagined a better place to stay in Key West. Located at the quiet end of Duval Street, The Southernmost Beach Resort features fantastic rooms, beaches, pools, and bars and is the perfect spot for couples or families looking to stay in a more tranquil part of Key West. They also offer bike rentals which we found to be the best way to get around Key West.

blog voyage key west

We stayed in the historic and beautiful La Mer House, in a gorgeous King room. Our house hosts made us feel extremely welcome and made sure that we had an exceptional stay. La Mer and Dewey house offer an exclusive breakfast spread every morning, and relaxing, delightful refreshments every afternoon. There was always a delicious selection of cheeses, deli meats, fresh fruit, and sweets, as well as a made-to-order chef’s special at breakfast. This is was a great time to recharge and relax, as well as socialize with our hosts and the other guests.

After our afternoon refreshments, we headed to the docks to hop aboard The Wind & Wine Sunset Sail with Danger Charters . Note: we were able to call and book this tour just a few hours in advance, but for most tours, it is recommended to book most tours 24 hours in advance to guarantee a spot, especially during the busy seasons.

Contrary to what you may assume from the name, Danger Charters offers an exceptionally relaxing sunset sail. What’s unique about them is that they offer a wine tasting while you sail! We sampled 8 different wines and various gourmet appetizers as we sailed and enjoyed the sunset. The crew was exceptional, ensuring that we were always taken care of, sharing interesting tidbits and anecdotes about The Keys, and engaging in great conversation. They also offer craft beers and non-alcoholic drinks for any non-wine drinkers.

The sunsets of Key West are truly spectacular and we would recommend seeing at least one of them from a sunset cruise.

FLORIDA KEYS ITINERARY DAY THREE:  THE DRY TORTUGAS

On day three, we checked off a bucket list item, The Dry Tortugas! Located 70 miles off the coast of Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park is famous for its spectacular waters and its prize historic feature, Fort Jefferson.

blog voyage key west

You can explore Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas via a day-trip offered by Yankee Freedom . Trips depart from Key West daily aboard a large 250 passenger ocean-going catamaran that takes about 2 hours to make the crossing. Be warned that if there are strong winds, the seas can get quite rough, so be sure to check current conditions and take any necessary precautions to prevent motion sickness.

Along the way, the wonderful staff provided us with information on the geography and history of the area. Our lead guide, Hollywood, talked about the dynamic nature of the Tortugas and the key roles that they played for sailors in the early years of the US. He also pointed out some real-life treasure hunters who were searching for the remaining $600,000,000 treasure of two Spanish Galleons that went down in the area.

About an hour and half into the crossing, Fort Jefferson appears on the horizon. As you approach this immense structure in the middle of nowhere, one question comes pops into everyone’s mind, “Why on earth is this thing here??” Well, Hollywood explained everything once inside the fort, but you’ll have to visit yourself to find out 😉

Fort Jefferson is chilling. As you walk the moat around it or view the spectacular waters from atop its three story high roof, you really appreciate how much work went into building this spectacle and imagine what life would have been for fort dwellers. I can’t speak highly enough about how incredible exploring the fort and the islands was, and I’d love to go back and camp on the island for a night or two next time. Imagine the stars!

After a few hours exploring the Dry Tortugas, we reboarded the Yankee Freedom III and made our way back to Key West.

We made it back just in time to catch the sunset from  Bistro 245 at Margaritaville Resort . As I mentioned before, Key West sunsets cannot be missed!

blog voyage key west

Bistro 245 is right next to sunset square and the upstairs bar is a great place to get a view above the crowds and enjoy the end of the day with a margarita in hand. The crowds tend to leave once the sun goes down, but make sure to stay a little longer as the best part of the sunset usually happens 10-15 minutes  after  the sun goes below the horizon.

For dinner on day three, we hopped in the car and drove up to a local favorite,  Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar . Their aptly anointed “American coastal comfort food” features gourmet takes on the classics and fresh seafood all in a great location that earned them OpenTable’s 2018 Diners’ Choice Award for best ambiance. We highly recommend the crab beignets (uhh, yes please!!) and the black grouper.

FLORIDA KEYS ITINERARY DAY FOUR:  BREAKFAST OF A LIFETIME

Latitudes  is an absolute treat. Located on Sunset Key –  just a 6-minute complimentary ferry ride across from Key West – Latitudes and its executive chef Jerry Crocker offer a “work of art” menu that incorporates fresh locally sourced fish and tropical fruits, all in a spectacular setting. (If Sunset Key sounds familiar to you, it could be because Oprah rented out every cottage on the island one time for her friends and family).

blog voyage key west

Latitudes offers an exceptional menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you go for breakfast, treat yourself to the lobster benedict, you will not regret it.

After breakfast, we puttered around Sunset Key before hopping back on the ferry to Key West.

We spent most of the day exploring the streets of Key West. We walked the boardwalks, biked up and down Duval Street, checked out the quaint architecture, and then relaxed on the beach at The Southermost Beach Resort.

Following afternoon refreshments at the Resort, we made our way back to the piers to board our second sunset sail, this time with  Sebago . Aboard Sebago’s large catamaran you’ll find friendly staff, lots of deck space, bottomless beer, margaritas and sangria, plus a cash bar. We made a bunch of new friends while out on the water and although we prefer the Danger Charters experience, Sebago definitely provides a good economical option.

blog voyage key west

Upon arriving back at the dock we headed down the boardwalk and popped in for dinner at Turtle Kraals, another Key West classic. We sat outside up top with a great view of the marina and enjoyed a couple of key lime margaritas with delicious conch fritters, ribs, and ceviche.

FLORIDA KEYS ITINERARY DAY FIVE:  KEY WEST TO MARATHON

Key West, it’s been great! Time to work our way back.

After a superb breakfast at La Mer House, we said goodbye to our gracious hosts and headed north. We headed up to  Lazy Dog  where we had rebooked our kayak excursion from earlier in the week.

Kayaking through the mangroves is without a doubt the best way to see them. We were able to see all kinds of marine life (PLUS super cool iguanas!) and paddle through channels where mangroves were literally growing above our heads. The pace of the tour was relaxing and our guide, Lindsay, was friendly, knowledgeable, and ecologically responsible.

We came off the water, bid adieu to the fantastic Lazy Dog staff and made our way up the highway to our destination for the night,  The Tranquility Bay Beach House Resort  in Marathon.

We had worked up an appetite kayaking and so it was the perfect time to check out their on-site restaurant,  The Butterfly Cafe . Remember how I mentioned above about the Yellowtail Snapper? Well, this is where we discovered its magic.

Yellowtail Snapper is a Florida Keys speciality, so as per the chef’s recommendation, we both had it at The Butterfly Cafe, and it was game-changingly delicious.

We spent the rest of the day exploring the incredible grounds of the Resort. We hung out on the beach, grabbed a drink at the Tiki Bar, and putted on the putting greens (Lauren won). They also have kayaks and jet skis to take out, but we had already had our day out on the water. Tranquillity Bay is a fantastic place to stay for families and couples alike as their beautiful multi-bedroom units provide full kitchens, balconies, and plenty of amenities.

blog voyage key west

For our last dinner in The Keys, we went to  The Lighthouse Grill  at Faro Blanco Resort. They offer a flight of local craft beers and amazing seafood – the scallops with Boursin risotto was absolutely fantastic. Although we went for dinner this would be a great place for happy hour to catch the sunset and enjoy the goings on of the marina.

The next morning, we woke up and made our way back to Miami airport, from where we flew home. On your way back, make sure to take the highway 1 route, as our GPS suggested the backroads, which was a lot of stops and starts on one-way roads.

Overall, our trip to  The Florida Keys  exceeded our expectations. It’s hard to find a place with so much beauty, history, and great things to see and do. You can do as little or as much as you want, and have an incredible time. When we go back – which we surely will! – here are some of the things on our list that we didn’t have time for this time around: hire a fishing charter for the day, visit the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, check out the craft breweries, visit the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, and so much more! If you’re looking for a full list, check out our other blog of  9 epic things to do in the Florida Keys.

The Ultimate Key West Itinerary: 3 Days in the Conch Republic

Where to stay in key west.

Before we dive into this Key West itinerary, let’s talk about where to stay in the famous Key West!

Key West is only 4 miles long, so you might be thinking… how many places can there possibly be to stay? The answer is… a lot!

Key West has a few diverse neighborhoods, but the first decision you’ll need to make is whether you prefer the historic charm of Old Town or the modern amenities of New Town. These two areas split Key West down the middle: the eastern half and the western half.

Most people want to stay in Old Town to be near the action, but there are pros and cons to both areas, which I’ll dive into in the next sections!

Staying in Old Town Key West

For those seeking a slice of Key West’s rich history and vibrant atmosphere, Old Town is the ideal choice. This area is known for its charming streets lined with Victorian-style houses, art galleries, and boutique shops.

When staying in Old Town, you’ll be steps away from the iconic sites. You can explore the Hemingway Home and Museum, soak in the vibrant energy of Mallory Square, and party the night away on Duval Street, then walk back to your accommodation!

Here is a list of the top Old Town Key West hotels , but you can also check out your options on the map above! Old Town has tons of vacation rental and B&B options as well as typical hotels!

  • Almond Tree Inn (Moderate)
  • Ocean Key Resort (Moderate/Luxury)
  • The Mansion on the Sea (Moderate/Luxury)
  • Pier House Resort & Spa (Moderate/Luxury)
  • Marquesa Hotel (Luxury)
  • Casa Marina Key West (Luxury)

If you’re staying in Old Town, I recommend skipping the rental car . You’ll be able to access everything you need via walking or biking. Parking in Old Town can be difficult and expensive, so it’s better not to have a car!

However, if you plan to visit other Keys during your stay, you’ll definitely need a car! I recommend doing an epic road trip from Key Largo to Key Wes t so you can experience all the Keys have to offer!

Staying in New Town Key West

If you’re driving into the Keys, New Town is the first area you’ll come across. It’s where the airport is located, along with most of the “chain” hotels. This area is characterized by wider streets, modern conveniences, and a quieter ambiance compared to the lively energy of Old Town.

New Town provides a more relaxed environment, making it an excellent choice for those looking to unwind after a day of exploration. It’s also convenient for those who prefer to have modern amenities at their fingertips.

Hotels in New Town also tend to be a bit cheaper than those in Old Town!

Even though it’s a bit further away from the main Key West attractions, you still may not need a car if you’re staying in New Town.

This is because most of the hotels in New Town have free shuttles to Old Town that run multiple times a day. These shuttles make it easy to visit Old Town without having to worry about parking, or drinking and driving!

Here is a list of the top hotels to check out in New Town Key West!

  • Havana Cabana at Key West (Budget/Moderate)
  • Parrot Key Hotel & Villas (Moderate)
  • Margaritaville Beach House (Moderate)
  • The Perry Hotel and Marina (Moderate)
  • Hilton Garden Inn (Moderate)

How to Get to Key West

If you’re planning a Key West vacation, you’re going to need to know how to get there! There are a couple of options when it comes to traveling to Key West.

The Key West International Airport (EWY) is extremely convenient to fly into. It’s located right in the heart of New Town and just minutes away from Old Town. If you have the option, I highly recommend flying into Key West.

However, you may find that flights into EWY can be a little pricey. While there are direct flights from around the country, it is still a small airport, which tends to mean higher prices. Airlines like Silver and Allegiant often have cheap, direct flights though, so check to see if they fly out of your home airport!

Key Largo to Islamorada

The other option is to of course: drive! If flight prices into Key West Airport are too high, you can look into Miami Airport (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) and then make the drive down to Key West.

I touch more on this in my Ultimate Florida Keys Travel Guide , but I highly recommend this route so you can experience ALL of the Keys, not just Key West. The best option is to fly into Miami, rent a car, and make the drive from Miami to Key West .

Once you arrive in Key West, you can drop off your rental car and fly out of the Key West airport, so you don’t have to drive the length of the Keys twice!

Key West Map

Lastly, before we get into this Key West itinerary, here is a detailed map of Key West! It includes all of the restaurants, bars, and landmarks mentioned in this itinerary, plus more!

Make sure to save this map of Key West to your own Google Maps so you can access it during your trip!

Day 1: Brunch, Historic Sites & a Sunset Celebration

Blue heaven + exploring old town.

Today is your first full day in Key West! Welcome to paradise!

Start your morning by heading straight to Blue Heaven , one of the most popular restaurants. They open at 8am , and I recommend getting there as close to opening as possible. If you show up later in the morning, be prepared to wait!

I highly recommend getting the Lobster Eggs Benedict and a slice of their GIANT Key Lime Pie!

Blue Heaven Key West

After breakfast, it’s time to walk around Old Town Key West and explore the historic sites. There are a ton of things to do in the area, so you can choose a few (or all!) of them to fill your morning. Here are a few options!

  • Climb to the top of the Key West Lighthouse
  • Snap a picture at the Southernmost Point
  • Tour Ernest Hemingway’s Home & Museum
  • Explore the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

There are also some great lunch spots around this area, including The Lobster Shack , the Seaside Cafe at the Mansion , and Louie’s Backyard !

Beach Relaxation & Sunset Views

In the afternoon, head over to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park , a 19th-century fort and park located on the southern edge of Key West. Starting at $4.50 per person, the park is a great place to spend an afternoon.

There is a beautiful beach within the park where you can swim, lounge, and even snorkel ! Plus, you can explore the fort’s grounds and learn about the incredible Civil War history.

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

To finish off your day, make your way to Mallory Square and witness the famous Sunset Celebration . This is the most famous place to watch the sunset in Key West, so if you want a front-row seat, arrive early!

Around sunset, Mallory Square comes alive with food vendors, street performers, music, and more. It’s the perfect way to finish off your first night in Key West.

sailboat in Key West

Day 2: Ocean Adventures & Duval Street

A morning ocean adventure.

On Day 2 of this Key West itinerary, it’s time to get out on the water. You have a couple of options!

If you’re feeling adventurous, I highly recommend visiting Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas National Park. a former military installation approximately 60 miles west of Key West in the middle of the ocean.

To get here, you either need to take the 3-hour Yankee Freedom ferry or book a seaplane . (The latter is very pricey!!). Both options book up pretty far in advance, so I recommend looking at your options as soon as possible! You can read more about visiting here .

Fort Jefferson is one of the coolest places I’ve ever visited! The fort was never finished, but it was used during the Civil War and even held prisoners.

You can spend the day walking around the fort and enjoying the scenery. Plus there are incredible beaches and clear water surrounding the fort that you can snorkel and swim in. You can even camp here if you’re into that!!

Fort Jefferson Dry Tortugas Key West

If Fort Jefferson doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, there are plenty of other ocean adventures to be had locally in Key West. Here are some options!

  • Snorkeling & Dolphin Watching Combo Tour
  • Reef Snorkel & Sail Adventure
  • Key West Scuba Dive
  • Jet Skiing around Key West
  • Island Adventure Eco Tour

No matter which you choose, you are sure to see some incredible marine life and have a great time on the beautiful Key West water! For breakfast before, head to the Cuban Coffee Queen!

A Night on Duval Street

In the evening, head back down to Old Town and grab dinner at one of the fabulous restaurants nearby. If you want to be on the water, I highly recommend Hot Tin Roof at the Ocean Key Resort. This is a great spot if you can’t get enough of those Key West sunset views! You can also grab pre-dinner drinks at Sunset Pier!

There are also some incredible restaurant options along Duval Street, including Blackfin Bistro , Kaya Island Eats , and Nine One Five .

After dinner, it’s time to check out the famous nightlife in the area and maybe do the “Duval Crawl”. This is the nickname for bar-hopping along Duval Street, as you will be crawling by the end!

Some of the most famous bars on Duval include Hog’s Breath Saloon, Sloppy Joe’s, the Bull and Whistle Bar, and the Smokin’ Tuna Saloon.

If dive bars aren’t your thing, don’t worry! There are other nighttime options on Duval Street. You can grab an incredible, adult-friendly dessert at the legendary Better Than Sex restaurant. Another option is to see a drag show at Aqua Nightclub or La Te Da ! Or you can just wander down the street and appreciate the chaos.

Sloppy Joe's Bar Key West, Florida

Day 3: Bikes, Beach, & a Sunset Cruise

Biking to the beach.

On the last day of this Key West itinerary, start your morning by renting bikes and exploring the south side of Key West. There are plenty of places to rent bikes from, but I highly recommend Eaton Bikes ! They will even drop off the bikes at your hotel for you.

Key West is extremely bike-friendly, so don’t worry about following a particular route, just make your way towards Smathers Beach. There’s a beautiful bike and walking path along A1A in front of the beach you can check out!

Once you’re ready to rest, head onto the gorgeous Smathers Beach, one of the only sprawling white-sand beaches in the entire Florida Keys! This man-made beach actually had white sand imported from the Bahamas, and it does not disappoint! It’s one of my favorite free things to do in Key West !

girl walking along boardwalk on Smathers Beach in Key west

Shopping and Sunset Cruise

In the afternoon, head back down to Old Town and explore any other sites you missed on your first day. Around Mallory Square, there’s the Key West Aquarium, the Truman Little White House, and the Maritime Museum!

It’s also fun to explore Duval Street during the day! There are many great boutiques and souvenir shops to check out. Make sure to stop in Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shoppe for another slice of Key lime pie!

In the evening, it’s time to close out your last night in Key West by embarking on a sunset cruise! As you already know, the sunsets in Key West are jaw-dropping, and the best way to see them is from the water on a sunset sail.

There are tons of different Key West sunset cruises to choose from, including dinner cruises, open bar cruises, and cruises with a dance floor! They typically last between 2 and 3 hours and will take you around Key West and Sunset Key as the sun sinks into the ocean.

You can check out my complete guide to Key West Sunset Cruises here to compare prices and help pick the perfect one for you!

Final Thoughts

That wraps up my perfect 3 Day Key West itinerary. As you can see, Key West is more than just an island destination; it’s a kaleidoscope of history, culture, and natural beauty that is sure to leave you wanting more!

And 3 days is the perfect amount of time to spend in Key West to be able to see and do it all. If you follow this 3 day itinerary, I guarantee you’ll have an incredible time!

The Perfect 4 Day Key West Itinerary

We spent an amazing 4 days in Key West. Well, any time in Key West is amazing, right? The Kimpton Key West hosted us for a fun time. We explored all of their properties and tried a few new places for dinner. Along the way, I learned a few things I thought I would share about our Key West itinerary.

First off, let’s talk about planning an itinerary… do it, but don’t overdo it. Leave space in the day for random stuff. You are on vacation, after all, not every second of every day needs to be planned. Plan for an island time experience.

Below are affiliate links, which means we will earn a small commission at no extra charge to you. As always, thanks for your support.

Getting to Key West

key west airport arrival terminal

How do you get to Key West? There are really three ways… by car, by plane and by ferry.

A lot of airlines now offer direct flights into Key West. Or, you can fly into Miami International Airport and experience the Key West Road trip. If you have never done this, I would plan it at least once. Plan to make stops along the way. Check out the Everglades National Park, Key Largo, and other cool spots along the overseas highway. Did you know there are 11 National Parks in Florida? Two can be found in the Keys (the Everglades and the Dry Tortugas)

The Ultimate Road Trip from Miami to Key West

Along the Overseas Highway, you will notice everything is marked by mileage, with Mile Marker Zero being in Key West.

Rather take a ferry? Check out the Key West Express.

So… with the ground rules set… let’s see how to explore Key West, enjoy some downtime, AND have an amazing time in just 4 days.

The Beginning

Ok.. we planned this on purpose, we arrived very early in Key West. This meant we traveled with very little sleep, but that’s ok.

Side note, I booked our plane tickets directly with the airline. So, they set the schedule, departure/arrivals, and time for the layover. BUT, their itinerary only allowed for 25 minutes from touchdown to take off on our layover down. Might work, if you aren’t 10 minutes late leaving …. but, we managed to make the connecting flight, so all good. But, next time, I will ensure we have plenty of time between connections.

kevin and michele on an airplane

We always travel with carry-on only. It just makes the trip that much easier. Plus, for 4 days… you really don’t need that much stuff. Once we land it’s straight to the hotel. For this visit, we headed to Winslow’s Bungalows. This Kimpton property is just amazing.

Winslow’s Bungalows

Located at 725 Truman Ave, you are fairly close to everything. If you get tired of walking you can always take an Uber or the free Duval Loop bus. If you are taking a cab from the airport to the hotel, you may want to let them know it’s the Kimpton on Truman instead of Winslow’s Bungalows. The reason is these properties used to be part of the Historic Key West Inns, but now are part of the Kimpton family.

This property used to be the Chelsea House and Key Lime Inn. Kimpton has combined them into one property now known as Winslow’s Bungalows.

king bedroom at the kimpton inn key west

Here’s a bit of quick history about the property…..

  • It’s named after the famous painter and summer Key West resident Winslow Homer
  • Has 3 pools, an outdoor bar, and vibrant gardens
  • 85 guestrooms including 2 deluxe suites and is Kimpton’s largest Key West hotel
  • The room designs pay homage to the property’s past owners including an Army officer, an Irish steamboat Captain, and a circus performer
  • On the property is Maloney House, where the first mayor of Key West lived. He planted an amazing fruit grove that is still used by the hotel today.
  • The property has 3 stand-alone bungalows to accommodate guests wanting a bit more privacy
  • The property is very pet friendly. They offer Henry’s dog treats to their dog guests
  • If you want to try the famous Key West bagel made by Goldman’s, they are offered at breakfast (they are very very yummy)
  • Music is played at the pool bar
  • The old Blue Parrot Inn is across the street and is now part of this property. They have 11 rooms and their pool is called the serenity pool because they don’t play music and it offers a zen tranquil feeling

blog voyage key west

They didn’t have our room ready yet, remember we arrived early (before checkout). But, that was ok. They held our luggage so we could head off to have breakfast and a much needed cocktail to start the vacation off. Our breakfast of choice? Blue Heaven of course.

After breakfast, it was time to head back to the hotel and enjoy a bit of pool time. Best way to cool off and refresh after a day of traveling.

As you can see, our room was, perfect. Winslow’s Bungalows offers great spaces to relax and enjoy Key West. Not too far from the heart of Duval Street, this place offers three pools and an amazing pool bar.

Fully refreshed, we head out to explore. First stop… the Mile Zero sign. No vacation in Key West is complete without a picture in front of the Mile Zero sign.

Needing a place to cool off, we then headed over to the Custom House. This place offers rotating exhibits all about Key West and those who influenced Key West. Always a great stop. Some the coolest and best things can be found in their gift shop.

Now, it’s time for dinner. A favorite stop of ours is Sloppy Joe’s. I know, I know, it can be a bit touristy, but I still love this place. The food is always good, the drinks are poured strong and they offer live music. Who could ask for more?

Speaking of live music, plan a stop at the Smokin’ Tuna, one of the best places in Key West for music. They have an outdoor courtyard that offers shade and cold adult beverages.

Most of the time I suggest sunset celebration at Mallory Square, but this night, we opted for a different perspective. Sunset from the top of Schooner Wharf. This is the perfect place to see the harbor, enjoy a cold beverage and listen to live music.

drinks at blue heaven key west

Today, hubby heads off to enjoy a morning out on the water fishing. Me… well, I do what I love to do while in Key West, I head out for a morning walk. Who doesn’t love a morning walk around Key West? I love to look at the historic homes that are scattered all over this small island. It’s one of the great things about the Island, they have kept the charm and preserved its history.

Historic Walking Tour

When I get back, it’s time for breakfast. I head down this wandering path at Winslow’s and partake in their complimentary breakfast. It’s a basic continental breakfast. It’s served in the bar area. Enjoying my second (and maybe third) cup of coffee, I did a bit of work. Caught up on a few emails, and, worked on this blog post. At the bar, is a great spot to work. I don’t spend too much time working… after all, there is a lot more to see and do before Kevin returns from his fishing trip.

Kevin returned after a successful fishing trip, and we then set out for the next adventure. Kimpton Hotels hosted us for a tour of their Lighthouse property. This place is very cool Across the street from the Hemingway House, it offers a great view of the lighthouse and they have a very nice bar.

Not staying at the Lighthouse? No worries, the bar is open to the public, Plan to stop in and enjoy this place. The bartender is engaging and can mix many amazing cocktails. We had the best time trying the house specialties. We actually couldn’t decide which ones we liked best. It’s ok to like them all, right?

While in Key West, it seems to always be cocktail time. With that in mind, we had time before our dinner reservations and headed over to General Horseplay. This place is known for their cocktails and fun Happy Hour. It’s a great place to start off an evening.

For dinner… we were hosted by Poke in the Rear. Don’t overlook this place. It was, one of the best dinners we had while on Island.

sidewalk in key west with cat paw prints

Today we have a quick bite of breakfast and then head out to explore the streets of Key West. Being married to a photographer, I spend a lot of time wandering around. But, I wouldn’t have it any other way. We saw roosters, flowers, palm trees, and stickers. All my favorites.

Grabbed a cold brew from Cuban Coffee Queen and walked around the Historic Seaport.

Heard the band starting to play at Sunset Pier… which means we are stopping to listen and enjoy a cold beverage. Here’s where I would insert the idea of having free time built into your Key West itinerary. If you “had” to be somewhere … you might miss out on an awesome view, cold beverages, and amazing live music.

A few more stops for pictures and then we are heading back to Winslow’s Bungalows. Not only do they have a great pool bar and pool area, but they offered a free tasting of Mutiny rum. It was yummy and the story was just as interesting.

We didn’t have any dinner plans to speak of so we “thought” we would head over to Mallory Square and enjoy sunset and then play it by ear. I think that’s a great way to spend any evening in Key West, at least one night. No particular plans and let the evening unfold.

Well, as we walked by Little Pearl and saw they had two chairs open at the bar… and we hopped on the chance to eat at Little Pearl. This place offers a tasting style menu and is worth every penny if you can get a reservation.

rooster in key west

We have a later flight, also planned on purpose, which gives us almost a full day to play in Key West. What is always fun to see is the “guest” ships that dock at Mallory Square. On this day we were able to see the USCGC Eagle. This 295-foot, three-masted barque is used as a training vessel for future officers of the United States Coast Guard. This is also known as “America’s Tall Ship” and is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes and the only active square-rigger in US service. Very, very cool to see in Key West.

Then it was off to lunch at First Flight. This is the Southernmost microbrewery and they offer a great courtyard seating area and a wonderful menu.

Afterward, we head off to the airport to head home. As per usual, we grab a last vacation cocktail and share a frozen Key Lime pie on a stick (dipped in chocolate).

We tried new places for food and drinks and had plenty of down time to relax. That’s what makes the perfect vacation… a perfect balance.

I get it, we didn’t do much on this trip. But, we had a really good time. If this seems a bit too slow for you, then check out these ideas:

  • Take a guided tour – a food tour, a walking tour, a ghost tour ( see our recommendations here )
  • Take the ferry (or seaplane ) out to the Dry Tortugas National Park – be sure to book this one in advance as it sells out quickly.
  • Head out on the water to snorkel the coral reefs
  • Go up the Keys for a day trip and see Bahia Honda State Park, sea turtles, or the Key Deer on Big Pine Key.
  • 3 Reasons Smathers Beach is the best
  • Visit one of the 18 museums on the island… like the Truman Little White House

Virgin Voyages Embarkation & Ports Review: Key West, Beach Club at Bimini

In this post:

I recently came back from a Virgin Voyages cruise out of Miami, and I felt like it was a breath of fresh air for cruising. Virgin Voyages Embarkation and disembarkation were a breeze, and we visited two ports on our four-night journey dubbed “Fire and Sunset Soirees”. This post highlights the Virgin Voyages embarkation and disembarkation process, as well as the ports visited on this trip.

Itinerary- Fire & Sunset Soirées

First Day: Miami, Florida- 6 PM Departure (All Aboard 2 Hours Before)

Second Day: Key West, Florida- 8 AM to 5 PM

Third Day: At Sea

Fourth Day: Beach Club at Bimini, Bahamas- 8 AM to 7 PM

Fifth Day: Miami, Florida- 6:30 AM Arrival

Embarkation

Online check-in.

Since Virgin Voyages, provides late checkout, boarding does start a bit later than other cruise lines and generally begins at 2 pm. I booked my cruise relatively last minute less than a month out, and so when I went to check-in online, the time slots for me to choose for embarkation were 3 to 3:45 pm and I chose a 3:15 pm slot.

Arrival at Terminal V

Virgin Voyages has their own new terminal in Miami called Terminal V. Once you arrive, you can drop off your bags if you’d like, or proceed to check-in. We just had a carry-on bag and a backpack, so we didn’t need help with our bags. Then, we took the escalators to the check-in, and there was no line. We were quickly helped by a friendly associate who gave us our bands which are a bracelet and would serve as our room key and card for onboard purchases.

Shortly after, we went through security and then passed the empty waiting area. I assume if you arrive earlier you may have to wait here, but since our boarding time was later, we walked right on the ship! The whole process took about 15 minutes and was very seamless.

I’ve been to Key West before back in 2019, and I wasn’t that impressed with it. I had similar sentiments this time. It gives off old-school vibes and is mainly filled with old Dive Bars. Despite its tropical charm, the city is not my cup of tea, but some people may like it.

One cool landmark in Key West is the fact that Pam Am was founded here, The airline was founded in 1927 as a mail and passenger service, operating between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba. It was the principal and largest international air carrier and unofficial flag carrier for the United States from 1927 until its demise in 1991.

Beach Club at Bimini

The Virgin Voyages Bimini Beach Club is part of the expansive Resorts World complex, which also includes a Hilton hotel. When Virgin Voyages is at port, the Beach Club is exclusive only to ship guests which is nice.

They also had short excursions some of which included visiting a shipwreck and shark snorkeling & scuba diving.

The beach club is over a mile away from the ship, but thankfully trams run quite regularly, and we never waited more than 5 minutes for one. The ride from the port to the beach club is about 15 minutes long. On the way there, it also made an intermediate stop at Fisherman’s Village if you wanted to stroll around some shops or rent a golf cart to explore the island. On the ride back, the tram stopped in front of the Hilton Resorts World, in case you wanted to check out the casino. We did a quick visit to the Hilton and played a bit of slots before catching the tram back to the ship.

When we arrived around 10, a lot of the pool chairs were taken, but I was actually able to find a lounger within the water which was kind of cool. Servers did come around to take drink orders, but it was a bit slow, so we ended up grabbing drinks at the bar ourselves. Your wearable band extends to the Beach Club, and you can use your Bar Tab here as well. Additionally, the free WiFi from the ship extends here too.

Other areas include Belvedere Beach, which had loungers with umbrellas and sand, despite not being along the water. And, hammocks were available in the hideaway.

The beach was nice, with plenty of chairs to lounge. They had some cute daybeds and larger clamshell seats, but most of those were occupied by the time we arrived. The water in January was a tad cold, but it was still warm enough for me to swim for a bit. Additionally, cabanas were available to rent for a fee.

RockStar Perks

If you are booked in the ships’ RockStar suites, there is a special VIP area on the left side of the Beach Club just for you called the Rockstar Retreat. They have a private section of the beach with nicer lounge chairs, and the food selection is brought to you by dedicated servers.

Both sides have “Beach Eats” where you can grab lunch that is Caribbean-inspired. You order at a counter, and you’ll be provided your selections on a tray, so no having to self-serve like a buffet. Here, soft drinks including fountain soda and water are included and are self-serve.

The Beach Club at Bimini Menu

  • Bahamian Mango & Macadamia Nut Salad
  • Watermelon & Jicama Salad
  • Lechon Asado
  • Caribbean Rice and Black Beans
  • Red Snapper & mango Ceviche
  • West Indian Pumpkin Curry
  • Grilled Honey Jerk Chicken Thigh
  • Grilled Corn on the Cob
  • Crispy Cassava
  • Tropical Fruit Salad

The selections I tried were decent, but not as good as the food on the ship. It would be nice if they had the same caliber of food here as on the ship. Perhaps that is something they can improve on in the future.

Disembarkation

You can select your disembarkation time towards the end of the sailing, and the app will send you a push notification. In the app under “On Shore Things”, you’ll be able to select a time. We chose the latest possible slot which was 10:15 am because we had a mid-afternoon flight and wanted to get the most sleep. For reference, the earliest slot was 7:30 am.

I really appreciate Virgin Voyages allowing later check-out times so you can have a solid night’s sleep, and not feel obligated to go to bed early the last night. 10:15 am is a lot better than the 8 am checkout I had on Royal Caribbean.

We left our room at 10:15 and went to the Roundabout to walk off at our leisure. You could put your bags out the night before for the staff to have the bags waiting for you at the cruise terminal, but we chose to walk off as we just had carry-ons. Customs took no time at all, and we just walked out of the terminal.

The rideshare area was a bit crowded, so definitely be patient when calling an Uber/Lyft. It took us about 20 minutes to get someone, but then we were on our way to Fort Lauderdale Airport to catch our flight home.

The Verdict

Overall, I found the Virgin Voyages embarkation and disembarkation process to be quite seamless. It has been definitely the quickest compared to my other cruises (Princess, Holland America, Royal Caribbean). I do appreciate how Virgin allows you to check out of your stateroom later than the other cruise lines so that you can get a full night’s sleep. As for the ports on this voyage, they were fine for quick stops, but I may stay on the ship next time if I end up in Key West again.

Takeoff To Travel

Hi everyone! The travel bug hit me at the age of eight on my first flight and ever since then I’ve loved planning vacations for my friends and family. My goal is to try out new hotel chains and sample the many airline cabins out there. Having been both a city boy and living in the suburbs, I love traveling to all destinations both big and small.

Key West , in the Florida Keys , is a city and an island of the same name. It is the county seat of Monroe County and is considered the southernmost city in the continental United States.

blog voyage key west

Understand [ edit ]

History [ edit ].

In Pre-Columbian times Key West was inhabited by the Tequesta and Calusa peoples. The first European to visit was Juan Ponce de León in 1521. As Florida became a Spanish colony, a fishing and salvage village with a small garrison was established here.

The island was used by fishermen from Cuba and from the British Bahamas, who were later joined by others from the United States after the latter nation's independence. While claimed by Spain, no nation exercised de facto control over the community there for some time. The island was considered the "Gibraltar of the West" because of its strategic location on the 90-mile (140 km)–wide deep shipping lane, the Straits of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. On March 25, 1822, Matthew C. Perry sailed the schooner Shark to Key West and planted the U.S. flag, physically claiming the Keys as United States property.

Key West was relatively isolated until 1912, when it was connected to the Florida mainland via the Overseas Railway extension of Henry M. Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway (FEC). The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed much of the railroad and killed hundreds of residents. The FEC could not afford to restore the railroad. The U.S. government then rebuilt the rail route as an automobile highway, completed in 1938, which became an extension of United States Highway 1. The portion of U.S. 1 through the Keys is called the Overseas Highway.

Modern Key West and the Florida Keys has a Tourist Development Council which collects a surtax on hotel bills to promote more and more tourism in the Keys in an uncontrolled positive feedback loop. Spending a million dollars a month on international travel promotion schemes, the island chain is crowded and expensive. Traffic is slow but the pace is frenetic.

Climate [ edit ]

Key West claims to be the only city in the lower 48 states to have never had a frost or a snowfall. Because of the proximity of the Gulf Stream in the Straits of Florida, about 12 miles (19 km) south and southeast, and the tempering effects of the Gulf of Mexico to the west and north, Key West has a notably mild, tropical climate.

Precipitation is characterized by dry and wet seasons. The period of November through April receives abundant sunshine and slightly less than 25 percent of the annual rainfall. This rainfall usually occurs in advance of cold fronts in a few heavy or light showers. May through October is normally the wet season, receiving approximately 53 percent of the yearly total in numerous showers and thunderstorms. Rain falls on most days of the wet season. Early morning is the favored time for these showers, which is different from mainland Florida, where showers and thunderstorms usually occur in the afternoon. Easterly (tropical) waves during this season occasionally bring excessive rainfall, while infrequent hurricanes may be accompanied by unusually heavy amounts. At any rate, Key West is the driest city in Florida. Summer is generally a few degrees cooler than the interior due to the moderating effects of the water, and with tropical breezes is a welcome relief from the interior's scorching temperatures.

24.55355 -81.75518 1 Key West International Airport ( EYW  IATA ) is the major airport on 3491 S Roosevelt Blvd (FL-A1A) serving Key West and the lower keys located 3.9 mi (6.3 km) southeast of downtown. The airport terminal is accessed from S Roosevelt Blvd along Faraldo Circle (its own access road). Major airlines serving the Key West are:

  • Allegiant (Asheville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Orlando-Sanford, St Petersburg FL; Pittsburgh )
  • American Airlines and Envoy Airlines dba American Eagle : (Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia; and American Eagle from Charlotte, Chicago–O'Hare, Miami, NY LaGuardia, Washington–National)

  • United & United Express operated by Republic Airlines : (Chicago–O'Hare, Houston–Intercontinental, Newark, Washington–Dulles. Additional United Flights to Tampa and Orlando are operated by Silver Airways as a codeshare partner with United).

Fares tend to be higher than to and from the large metropolitan airports. A popular alternative is to fly into Miami International Airport or Fort Lauderdale International Airport , rent a vehicle and drive down the Overseas Highway (US Hwy 1) to Key West (See "By car" in the below). Likewise you may also catch a ride with Keys Shuttle from Miami International and Ft Lauderdale International Airports to your hotel or to any address in Key West and anywhere in the Keys. Call them to schedule pick-up for the return trip back to Miami or Ft Lauderdale (see "By bus" in the below).

Car rental, although unnecessary in small Key West, is available from Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, and Thrifty. Alamo, Enterprise, and National have offices off site, with a free shuttle from the Airport. Parking on Key West can be a challenge in terms of the number of available spaces, and the size of spaces, so smaller cars are popular selections.

Since the re-establishment of US-Cuban relations at the end of 2014 and the easing of travel sanctions between the two countries there have not been any establishment of, or plans for regular ferry services between Key West and Cuba. Private mariners will still need a license from the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) to be able to sail their own vessels to Cuba. Please check with U.S. Customs & Border Protection as to where to sail into from foreign ports and regarding the rules for travel by private vessel or aircraft between the Florida Keys and Cuba.

By car [ edit ]

The Overseas Highway terminates in Key West, and links all the towns in the Keys with mainland Florida and links into the US Interstate network. Driving to Key West is straightforward (3 1/2 hours from Miami) and scenic with ocean vistas but driving around town is difficult and parking is expensive.

From Miami International Airport : Take LeJeune Road south to 836 West. Follow the Florida Turnpike south toward Key West. The Turnpike ends at US 1 in Florida City. Follow U.S. 1 south as far as it goes and you will be in Key West.

From Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport: Exit the airport and follow the signs for 595 West. Take 595 to the Florida Turnpike and follow the signs for the Florida Keys and Key WEST.

From the north: take the Florida Turnpike south and follow the signs for Homestead and Key West. The Florida Turnpike ends at US 1 in Florida City.Follow U.S. 1 south into the Florida Keys.

From Florida's West Coast: take 1-75 Alligator Alley east to the Miami exit, and south to the Turnpike Extension.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

With many narrow and one-way streets, driving Key West is difficult and parking is expensive. Many visitors choose to rent motor scooters, bicycles, golf carts, explore on foot or use public transportation. [2] When renting a golf cart keep in mind that you have to find parking for this vehicle as well. Scooters and bikes can normally be parked on the sidewalk right outside your destination.

The tourist area in Key West is Duval Street.

Key West Transit offers a fairly comprehensive bus system for local travel in and around Key West and up to MM 53 on Marathon Key in the Lower Keys. For taxi you may contact One Key West at +1 305-295-5555 to arrange for a pick-up or a ride share service such as Uber or Lyft.

Taxis and ride share services are plentiful and affordable.

If you plan to rent a car be aware that the Enterprise and Alamo desks are not located at the airport. You have to call the shuttle bus and wait for 12 minutes to catch a ride to the Truman Ave location. Budget is the only car rental agency in Key West that does not charge additional fees (usually $10/day from anyone else) for a second driver. Renting a car is more necessary if you plan to travel extensively or point to point in different parts of the Florida Keys then if you're staying exclusively on Key West where you won't need a car at all. If your lodgings are in Old Town you can more easily walk or bike to all the attractions.

Do [ edit ]

Key West is not the greatest place to bring a family. There are beaches and a few small parks during the day... for those that are awake. Enjoy an early night and prepare for the next day's adventure. However, if you are traveling with young ones, stay in a hotel off the main streets. For those who stay out all night you may not get to do these things but you should try. Because many locals get around by scooters, bikes, and/or electric cars, you may want to consider renting them at one of the many rental shops throughout the island.

Key West is not like Miami. There aren't many high end shops or big name brands. While there are a few, Key West is not the place for this type of shopping. Fly into or out of the Miami airport and spend a day in South Beach if this is what you are looking for. There are a lot of shops in Key West, especially along Duval Street, which goes from coast to coast. You can find something to wear at night which in Key West isn't much (price or material). Lose your sunglasses...they have them. Need suntan lotion..check. Want a tattoo? You could get probably get 20 or so if you went to every tattoo place in Key West. This is not a good idea if you have been drinking. You may regret it the next sober morning when you realize you have one or more.

  • Blue , 718 Caroline St . A boutique specializing in women's clothing. Everything from fun tees, to comfy linen pants they have everything for a casual day of drinking.

Eat [ edit ]

Budget [ edit ].

  • Conch Republic , 631 Greene St . Enjoy their spacious waterfront setting where the atmosphere is like a trip back in time to the way Key West used to be. Enjoy fresh fish and a raw bar. Feel like you are dining outside with the large windows that remain open during the day. A great place for a drink & some snacks specially during football season.
  • El Siboney , 900 Catherine St , ☏ +1 305-296-4184 . This Cuban restaurant, tucked into a quiet residential intersection, flies well below the tourist radar. Delicious food at very reasonable prices. To sum it up, this is where the locals go for Cuban.
  • 24.5557 -81.8028 1 Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville , 500 Duval St , ☏ +1 305-292-1435 . Su-Th 11AM-10PM, F Sa 11AM-11PM . Key West is pretty close to paradise, so you might as well have a cheeseburger while you're there. ( updated May 2023 )
  • Schooner Wharf , Caroline Street . A surprising choice for breakfast, this rough and ready landmark has a three-egg seafood omelette that, coupled with a bloody mary or two, will shock you back to life from a throw down night on Duval.

Mid-range [ edit ]

  • A & B Lobster House , 700 Front St . The main dishes are mid-range in price, and paired with great tasting appetizers and salads it will be hard to forget your meal here. While Key West is warm and the porch may seem like a good idea make sure the ladies have jackets. It is right on the water and with the fans on high blast it can get a little chilly.
  • Mangia-Mangia Pasta , 900 Southard St , ☏ +1 305-294-2469 . Every day 5:30-10PM .
  • El Meson de Pepe , 410 Wallstreet ( Mallory Square ), ☏ +1 305-295-2620 . If you want authentic, delicious Cuban food look nor further. I have been visiting this place for about the last 5 years when I drive down to Key West. Be ready for a special treat on the days that Pepe himself takes over the kitchen and creates his delectable masterpieces. The prices are very reasonable and their Mojitos have a kick. Everynight at Sunset, they have a band playing and enough space for dancing and having a couple of drinks at the bar. The walls of both the restaurant and the hallway connecting it to the gift shop are covered in colorful murals depicting early, Cuban-influenced life in Key West. History and folk art aficionados can easily spend 30-45 minutes just "wallgazing.".
  • Roof Top Cafe . Exactly what the names suggest, this is a restaurant situated on the roof top of a building. Overlooking Mallory square this place is perfect for dining during sunset or under the stars. As well as dinner they also serve Breakfast and lunch. Nothing is too expensive and the food is of good quality.
  • The Half Shell Raw Bar , Margaret St , ☏ +1 305-294-7496 231 . A Taste of Old Key West! Traditional Key West Raw Bar & great Key West seafood restaurant! Oysters, clams, shrimp, more! A low key restaurant for casual lunch or dinner. Settle down to an informal atmosphere, local characters, great bar and waterfront dining. It's a little piece of Old Key West on the historic Key West Bight. Drop in! Enjoy a frosty drink and the freshest seafood this side of the reef!
  • Upper Crust restaurant . A local favorite right on Duval Street next door to Antonia's, they serve what is called "not your average pizza." Unlike other pizzerias, this place serves very thin crust pizza that can be made with or without tomato sauce. Also serves salads and even a few types of sea food as well.

Splurge [ edit ]

  • Nine One Five , 915 Duval St . Dinner served from 6PM-11PM. With weather so nice you want to spend as much time outside as possible. So why not take your dining outside.or as close as possible? Join others on the porch of this dignified Victorian home. Similar to tapas dining, everything is intended to be shared and mixed and matched.
  • Seven Fish , Truman Avenue at Packer Street , ☏ +1 305-296-2777 . This mod-style restaurant has good seafood and a large colorful aquarium. The staff is intelligent and polite. The fish dishes are usually fresh and innovative. Reservations a must. ( updated Oct 2017 )
  • Square One , 1075 Duval St # C12 , ☏ +1 305-296-4300 . They serve breakfast lunch dinner and even Sunday brunch. The menu is very similar to many other restaurants. A lot of fish and seafood. A lot of "tropical' flavors and many fruits are included in the ingredients of their dishes.
  • Louie's Backyard , 700 Waddell Ave . This high-end establishment sells "dining with a view," and this is what you get because food is unremarkable.

There are a large number of drinking establishments of various types. The main tourist strip on Duval Street has numerous watering holes.

  • Captain Tony's Saloon , 428 Greene St . Ernest Hemingway's old stomping grounds. Pirate's Punch in a 22 oz cup.

Legend has it that upon hearing the news, the bar owner and his customers (including Hemingway) moved the bar, barstools, alcohol, etc. across Duval Street to a former restaurant - its current location.

There are also plenty of places to wet your whistle that aren't necessarily right on Duval Street.

  • Green Parrot Bar , 601 Whitehead St , ☏ +1 305-294-6133 . The last (or first, depending on your direction of travel) bar on US 1. Not your typical trop-rock bar, the Green Parrot leans more toward blues. Great bands, and an unbelievable selection of blues on the jukebox. Just remember, no snivelers.
  • Schooner Wharf Bar , 202 William St , ☏ +1 305-294-3302 . A last little piece of Old Key West, Schooner Wharf is an open air bar that sits on the Key West Bight. Grab a brew and watch the yachts.
  • Finnegans Wake , 320 Grinnell St . Celebrate life in true Irish style.
  • Bogarts Irish Pub , 900 - 904 Duval St , ☏ +1 305-296-0815 . An Irish pub and restaurant attached to a bed and breakfast located right on Duval Street. Daily happy hour specials offered as well as great Irish food. Come in and say hi and enjoy a nice cold pint.

Camping [ edit ]

There is no camping in Key West, but you can find expensive campgrounds outside the City limits on Stock Island . Within Key West, parking is very limited and RVs are generally discouraged, so your best shot is to stay somewhere outside the city and drive a smaller vehicle into town.

  • Boyds Key West Campground , 6401 Maloney Ave , ☏ +1 305-294-1465 .
  • El Mar RV Resort , 6700 Maloney Ave , ☏ +1 305-294-0857 .
  • Leo's Campground & RV Park , 5236 Suncrest Rd , ☏ +1 305-296-5260 .

There are a few more a little ways up the Keys that cater to RVs. The number of campsites are limited, so try not to be too shocked by the prices. Make your reservations well in advance six months to a year so you are sure to get your spot. You will notice the use of "MM" or "Mile Marker" in the addresses. This is how US 1 is marked. MM 0 is in Old town Key West and the beginning of US 1. The numbers go up, so you can tell just how far an address is from Key West.

  • Bluewater Key - Clark's RV Lot Rentals , Mile Marker 14.3, Sugarloaf , ☏ +1 305-744-0999 .
  • Bluewater Key RV Resort , MM 14.3 U.S. 1 Sugarloaf Key , ☏ +1 305-745-2494 .
  • Geiger Key Marina and RV Park , 5 Geiger Rd, Big Coppitt Key , ☏ +1 305-296-3553 .
  • Sugarloaf Key Resort KOA Kampground , MM 20 Summerland Key , ☏ +1 305-745-3549 , toll-free: +1-800-562-7731 .

blog voyage key west

2 — Islamorada

4 — Bahia Honda State Park

blog voyage key west

Weekend in Key West: The Perfect 2 or 3 Day Itinerary

Key West is one of the most vibrant and quirky cities in the US, and has the perk of being located in a tropical climate. Therefore, many people choose this island city as their vacation destination each year. There are plenty of fun experiences to be had, and this itinerary for 3 days in Key West will ensure you see the best of everything.

Although Key West is surrounded by water, it is connected to the mainland United States via a series of bridges through the Florida Keys called the Overseas Highway, or Highway 1. The endpoint of Highway 1 can be found at the corner of Fleming Street and Whitehead Street in downtown Key West.

Its unique location is just one thing that sets Key West apart from every other US city. Whether it’s bar hopping, foodie spots, sightseeing, or enjoying the great outdoors, there is something for everyone to enjoy in the “Conch Republic”. Without further ado, here is the perfect itinerary for an unforgettable 3 days in Key West .

3 Days in Key West – Itinerary for First Time Visitors

Weekend in Key West 2 or 3 Day Itinerary Travel Blog

Day 1: Explore Classic Key West

Day one of this Key West itinerary focuses on getting an overview of the city and visiting some of its most famous landmarks.

Arrive into Key West & Rent Bikes

You will likely arrive in Key West by flying into Key West International Airport (EYW) or driving in via Highway 1. If you flew, the airport is only 11 minutes from Duval Street, which is Key West’s famous main drag. You can simply grab an Uber from the airport to your lodging if you don’t rent a car.

Your next step is to rent bikes for the duration of your stay from Key West Bicycles . With the island being only four miles long and two miles wide, a car is not necessary and a bike will be more economical for reaching destinations just outside of walking distance.

If you enjoy guided tours, this guided bike tour is a great introduction to the top attractions.

Southernmost Point Concrete Buoy

No Key West itinerary is complete without a stop at the Southernmost Point Concrete Buoy. Located at the corner of South Street and Whitehead Street, this large buoy marks the Southernmost Point of the Continental United States. While the accuracy of this claim is questionable, other points in the Keys that are further south are not nearly as accessible to the public.

Upon arrival to the big concrete buoy, you will most likely need to wait in line for your photos, unless you arrive first thing in the morning. However, the line moves fast and people are generally very cooperative in helping one another take pictures.

Hemingway Home & Museum

Front of Hemingway House

One of the most essential places to visit in Key West is the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum . This is where Ernest Hemingway lived with his second wife, Pauline, from 1931 until their divorce in 1940. Hemingway wrote some of his most significant works in his studio above the carriage house.

While at the Hemingway House, you’ll likely see many cats roaming about.  If you look at their paws, you may notice that many of them have six toes!  Some of these cats are descendants of a 6-toed cat Hemingway received from a sea captain, who was departing Key West.

This house museum is open every day to walk-ins from 9am to 5pm, and the $16 ticket must be paid in cash. The price includes a 20 to 30-minute guided tour of the house.

Brunch at Blue Heaven

From the Hemingway House, walk four minutes to Blue Heaven , which is one of Key West’s most famous restaurants. Be sure to arrive by 2:00pm to make it in time for the breakfast & lunch menu. There is often a wait since they do not take brunch reservations, but it’s totally worth it.

Key Lime Pie at Blue Heaven Key West

Blue Heaven offers a variety of pancakes and benedicts, with some delicious options being the pineapple pancakes and Key West shrimp benedict. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, but outdoor allows you to eat in a garden-like setting with eclectic art, cats and chickens roaming about, and large tree canopies overhead. Save room for a slice of their signature key lime pie, which is piled high with merengue.

Key West Lighthouse

weekend getaways in Key West Lighthouse

Burn off some of your brunch with a short climb up the Key West Lighthouse , which is just a four-minute walk from Blue Heaven. The current structure was built in 1848 after the original was destroyed in a catastrophic hurricane. It reopened with a woman, Barbara Mabrity, as its Keeper – a highly unusual circumstance at that time.

After climbing 88 steps to the top, you will be rewarded with panoramic views over Key West and the surrounding waters of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Tickets cost $17 at the door or $15.40 online, and give you access to the lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters Museum. Visitors are welcome daily from 10am to 4pm.

Check out Duval Street

Duval Street in the evening

One of the most fun things to do in Key West is spending an evening on Duval Street, which is notorious for its party scene. There are plenty of spots to grab dinner, as well as make a night of it with drinks afterwards. Here are two casual and delicious dinner options:

  • D.J.’s Clam Shack : DJ’s Clam Shack was once featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and is famous for their “overstuffed” lobster rolls and conch fritters. Order at the small counter just off Duval Street, and enjoy their mouthwateringly good food on the small back patio.

Bowl at Poke in the Rear 2 or 3 days in Key West Florida itinerary

  • Poké in the Rear : Visit this open-air restaurant behind the Aqua Bar and Night Club for super fresh and delicious poké bowls.

Afterwards, you may want to continue your evening with drinks on Duval Street. The street is lined with bars, but start at Sloppy Joe’s , which is an old standby once frequented by Ernest Hemingway. The drinks are standard, but there is usually live music and always plenty of atmosphere.

Day 2: Cuban Coffee & Sunset Sail

The second of your three days in Key West introduces you to the city’s most spectacular feature: its sunrise and sunset views. You will also get a taste of Key West’s strong Cuban culture.

Sunrise at Higgs Beach

sunrise from pier at Higgs Beach

Sunrises in Key West are absolutely stunning, and the best viewing spot is the Edward B. Knight Pier at Higgs Beach. You will need to get up really early for this, but it’s totally worth it. The sun rises anytime between 6:37am and 7:37am over the course of the year.

This is where you’ll be thankful to have a bike, since you won’t need to rise as early. Higgs Beach is only a five-minute bike ride from Duval, but it’s more like twenty if you walk.

Drink Cuban Coffee

Exterior of Key West Cuban Coffee

Key West has a longstanding Cuban influence, being only 90 miles from Cuba.  Therefore, it’s imperative to try some Cuban coffee and cuisine while you’re in town.  Here are two great choices:

  • Key West Cuban Coffee : This restaurant is located in a tiny space on Duval Street. Behind a small counter will be three ladies working nonstop at the grill and espresso machine. Cuban and Mexican fare is served here, including breakfast burritos, empanadas, and light Cuban coffee.
  • Cuban Coffee Queen : Located in a shaded courtyard right off Duval Street, this outdoor restaurant is close to the action. You could keep things simple with a Cuban coffee or cortado paired with some pan Cubano. There are also more substantial items like Cuban sandwiches on the menu.

Butterfly Conservatory

Step away from Key West’s bustling scene for a moment without even leaving Duval Street. The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory contains hundreds of living butterflies made up of over 50 different species.

In this glass enclosed space, you can wander past tropical plants with colorful blossoms, while the butterflies and over 20 species of exotic birds fly around you.  The conservatory is open every day from 9am to 5pm, and tickets cost $15.

Stop at Rum Bar

For some high-quality cocktails, stop in for a quick drink at the Rum Bar . This small bar is only a four-minute walk down Duval Street from the Butterfly Conservatory. The cocktails are a little pricey, but they are definitely among the best in all of Key West.

The Pusser’s Rum painkiller in particular is a must; especially when consumed while people watching on the bar’s front porch.

Sunset Sail

sailboat on the horizon during sunset

Rest up before heading back out for one of the best tours in Key West: a sunset sail. Like sunrises, sunsets in Key West are like no other, and they are especially spectacular to view from the water.

There are many different boat charter companies to choose from, and Danger Charters is among the best. Their sunset sail is two hours long and limited to twenty-five guests.

As the sun lowers onto the horizon and the sky turns brilliant shades of orange and pink, the crew serves wine and beer tastings paired with hors d’oeuvres. The atmosphere is relaxed and the views from the sailboat could not be any more magical.

Schooner Wharf Bar

If hors d’oeuvres during the sunset sail didn’t fill you up, a great next stop is Schooner Wharf Bar. This bar and grille is only a ten-minute walk or five-minute bike ride from Opal Key Resort & Marina, where the sailboat drops you off.

Schooner Wharf Bar sits waterside along the Key West Historic Seaport.  This restaurant isn’t fancy at all, with its simple wood structure and “patio seating” made up of tables and plastic chairs on top of gravel.  However, that’s part of its charm as you sip a cocktail and snack on some tuna nachos or fried shrimp.

Day 3: Last Day in Key West

Breakfast at glazed donuts.

Glazed Donuts is a Key West favorite due to its drool-worthy donuts baked Wednesday through Sunday of each week. The donuts are by no means skimpy and the dough has just the right amount of chew. They come in fun flavors like Cuban coffee, blueberry cheesecake, key lime pie, and seasonal varieties.

Arrive as early as possible, or be prepared to wait in a line that sometimes extends down the sidewalk. The shop is open until 1pm unless it sells out, and you won’t want to miss out on the best flavors.

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park key west weekend getaway

Spend some time outdoors at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, which is located in downtown Key West, covers 54 acres, and has a beach and fort worth exploring. The fee to enter the park is $2.50 for walkers and bikers and $6 if you are parking a car.

While Key West is not a huge beach destination, this one is definitely worth a visit.  It offers beautiful scenery with its white sand and turquoise water that is popular for swimming.  There are chair and umbrella rentals available, or you can simply grab a picnic table and enjoy the view for a bit.

If you’d like to do some more exploring, check out Fort Taylor, which was built before the Civil War to defend the nation’s southeastern coast.  The fort was used in the Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII and the Cuban Missile Crisis, though it was never fired upon.

This state park also has the continental US’s southernmost hiking trails, including the Tropical Hammock Trail and Fort View nature trail.

Truman Little White House

Truman Little White House

The Truman Little White House is just a three-minute bike ride from Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, so it’s the perfect next stop on this Key West itinerary. While this house was used intermittently by six American presidents, its most significant usage was during Harry Truman’s presidency. He used the Little White House as his winter home, and spent about 175 days of his presidency here.

Tickets do not come cheap at $22.52 ($20.27 online), but a tour here allows you to see why Truman saw this as a retreat.  In this setting, he also would have contemplated issues surrounding post WWII foreign policy and the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement.

Kermit’s Key Lime Pie

Bike or walk .3 miles from the Truman Little White House to Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe on Front Street. This local establishment makes many lists for having one of the best key lime pies in Key West .

In addition to traditional pie, this little shop has an assortment of key lime treats that celebrate this flavor. A popular choice is chocolate covered key lime pie on a stick that you can nibble while walking around town. Just remember napkins for when the chocolate starts to melt in the tropical heat and humidity.

Mallory Square

Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

In case you couldn’t already tell, the sunset is a big deal in Key West; so much so that there is a nightly Sunset Celebration in Mallory Square.  This is something you should experience at least once during your stay, and it’s just a two-minute walk from Kermit’s.

The celebration begins about two hours before sunset when local vendors and street performers gather for a large party in the square. There are magicians, psychics, and food stalls to name just a few, and they build anticipation for the orange glow of the sun to lower over Sunset Key.

Dinner at Latitudes

Water view from Latitudes

Top off your last night in Key West with an incredibly romantic and memorable experience: dinner at Latitudes . As this fine dining restaurant is located on Sunset Key, you will need to head back to the Opal Key Resort and Marina to catch the ferry. This is free to anyone with a reservation at Latitudes.

Be sure to make reservations at least one month in advance, if not more, as dinner here is very popular. However, it’s worth the hype to eat right on the water with your toes in the sand. Plus, they offer a sophisticated menu with plenty of fresh seafood dishes, as well as an excellent wine list. Dinner at Latitudes is guaranteed to end your Key West itinerary on a high note.

Key West Travel Tips

  • Getting There: There are several ways to reach Key West. You fly into Key West International Airport . Miami is about 165 miles (or 266 kilometers) driving distance so you can also fly into Miami and rent a car or take a bus from Miami . If time is short, you can also visit Key West on a guided day trip from Miami .
  • Getting Around: Renting a car is not recommended due to Key West’s congested traffic and limited parking spots. The island is only 2×4 miles, and the best sights are easily reachable via biking or walking. If you enjoy guided tours, you join a trolley hop-on hop-off tour or a conch train tour .
  • Weather: Key West generally has pleasant weather year-round. High season is between December and February, and brings crowds and high prices; September through November is hurricane season, making this the least ideal time to travel. April is ideal, as the crowds have tapered off and the sweltering summer heat hasn’t set in yet.
  • Where to Stay in Key West: If it’s your first time visiting Key West, your itinerary will likely center around Duval Street. Therefore, it’s best to stay in close vicinity of that main stretch. Old Town Garden Villas is just one block from Duval, and has an adorable courtyard with a small dipping pool.

You are now all set with the perfect 2 or 3 days in Key West itinerary. Be prepared for the best sunsets you’ve ever seen in this eternally festive, yet laid back atmosphere. Just remember to pace yourself and keep an open mind to all the quirks this city has to offer.

Earlier this Spring, I went down to the Florida Keys with eight of Kenny and my good friends and we had an absolute blast! On a Sailboat

We stayed a few nights on this BOAT – which I highly recommend. We stayed on board took the catamaran sailboat out for the day (they provide you with a captain) but otherwise it was docked in the chic marina.

Even when it’s docked, it’s SO fun to be on a boat, and you have access to the nice hotel right in the marina, too for an easy pool, and a really good bar and restaurant to hang out in. There’s something about a happy hour in the marina that just hits different, ya know??

The Perry Hotel Key West

This is the hotel connected to the Marina in Key West – so you have access to it if you’re staying on a boat. It was SUPER nice and we ate here a couple nights. The bar makes delicious cocktails, and the pool is a great spot to spend the day. The only downside is it’s 20 minutes from Duval Street and downtown, but it’s kind of nice to be tucked away, too.

Ocean’s Edge Resort & Marina

15 minutes outside of Key West, which is great to be a little tucked away from the Duval St. craziness. Popular with families, couples.

Blue heaven.

You must, must, MUST eat brunch at Blue Heaven – this place is easily one of my favorite restaurants in the WORLD, and it’s absolutely worth the hype. I get the lobster BLT eggs benedict – with avocado instead of tomato – and it is  heaven . They home-make all their breads too so make sure you try the banana bread – and a bloody mary – so yummy!

Louie’s Backyard

For the best views and waterfront dining – and the most delicious Caribbean-American cuisine dinner in Key West, Louie’s is the spot! A must stop on any trip to Key West.

Biking around Key West is a really fun way to see the island. They have bike rentals all over KW- but we rented from Blue Sky Rentals on Duval Street.

Watch the sunset in Mallory Square

Watching the sunset in Mallory Square is essentially a religion in Key West. Every night, street performers, artists, and the like gather in Mallory Square for a sunset celebration. It’s fun to walk around and see!

Go to the beach!

Check out Fort Zachary Taylor – a Florida state park with great snorkeling.

The best bars to go out in Key West

When it comes to Key West nightlife, there’s no shortage of fun and funky bars to check out. I loved the live music at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, and my favorite going out spot was the upstairs of Rick’s Key West – which has a huge outdoor space and was super fun. From there, you can walk up and down Duval Street and there’s a ton of fun bars.

What to know before your trip to Key West

It’s a popular spot! Make your dinner reservations ahead of time – especially if you have a group. I was shocked that we couldn’t get in some of the best restaurants in Key West – even on a weekday! So definitely make those reservations, and you’ll be all set.

The weather in Key West is amazing year round – but you do have to watch out for hurricane season from June through early November.

blog voyage key west

blog voyage key west

blog voyage key west

blog voyage key west

La petite Maison Blanche (Little White House)

blog voyage key west

blog voyage key west

blog voyage key west

  • Assurance voyage (facultatif) : Chapka Assurance, AVI International, ACS AMI…

blog voyage key west

blog voyage key west

10 Things You Must Do in Key West

10 things you must do in key west & things you may not want to do.

Let’s assume this is your first visit to the southernmost island off mainland America. You have heard about Key West and the many things to do in Key West – most of which you need to forget about right now.

Things You May NOT Want To Do in Key West

Let’s start with the things you really won’t miss, despite the fact most tourists have these items on their top 10 things to do in Key West! Here’s a list of things to forget about in your list of things to do in Key West –

  • Captain Tony’s – this is a run-down tourist attraction with a tree in the middle. Read the history of how they moved Sloppy Joe’s from this site to its current location. However, the history is more interesting than the bar.
  • The Lighthouse – if you want to climb the 88 steps to the top of the lighthouse, go ahead. But once you reach the top with a dozen other fools, what have you got? You have a tired tourist with the same view you would have if you got in an elevator in the La Concha Hotel and went up to the rooftop bar for a rumrunner! Most top 10 things to do in Key West list the Lighthouse.
  • The Beaches – hey, we know a good beach! Beaches in Key West are fun for the sun, but dark brown sand usually with seaweed washed up is not my type of beach. Go to Clearwater Beach or Sanibel for a real pure white sand beach.
  • Margaritaville Restaurant – Jimmy Buffet will not be there. Something is fundamentally wrong with a bar that has a bigger gift shop than the bar! The burger is good, but there are plenty of good burgers in Key West. Love Jimmy and his music, but the restaurant is not on our list of things to do in Key West.

Here Are The Things You MUST Do in Key West Today

So, we have some time wasters out of the way, what are the 10 things you MUST do in Key West?

  • Mallory Square at Sunset – I know this is popular, but where else can you watch the sunset and 20 acts and performers at the same time – FREE?
  • Take a Walk – In fact, take two walks! First, walk the length of Duval Street just before dark. Then walk back the opposite way after dark. Yes, we know it’s a mile long, but there are probably 75 bars you can stop at along the way. Plus, the sights you will see and the sounds you hear are the heart of Key West. The people, the shops, the sidewalk peddlers, the bar bands all mix together in a delightful motion picture.
  • Conch Train – Ok, we know this is kind of corny. But the Conch Train takes you all around this 2-mile by 4-mile island. Saves you a lot of walking time and you get some history (some of it is even true).
  • Museum of Art and History – We are a sucker for a really good museum. Key West has a history unequaled by most communities. The Island dwellers went through native Americans, Spanish explorers, pirates, modern-day thieves, hurricanes and wars. The Museum of History is a great place to spend an air-conditioned afternoon on a sunny day.
  • Fort Jefferson – about 70 miles west of Key West are the Dry Tortugas. Another set of islands that have but one structure – Fort Jefferson. This fort was built in the mid-1800s. It will amaze you from a construction standpoint. It was used to house prisoners during the civil war. The most famous of which is Dr. Mudd. If time allows, take a boat to Fort Jefferson or, better yet, take a pontoon airplane that is just a 45-minute ride. Beautiful scenery and superb snorkeling are available around the island. If you have the time, this is the number one attraction on our list of things to do in Key West.
  • Key West Cemetery – Read the history before you go. Then read the tombstones that date back almost 200 years. If it seems creepy to walk among some 100,000 souls buried there, get over it. The history on the headstones will put you at ease. Read some of the captions on the stones like, “I told you I was sick!”.
  • The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory – We like this place on the south end of Duval. Butterflies in all their stages of development highlight this attraction. The birds, flora, and colorful setting make this a perfect family exhibit. Kind of touristy, but nature’s beauty is confined in this auditorium of natural habitat.
  • Sloppy Joe’s – We don’t like to include this place, but finding it is a must. It is on almost everyone’s list of things to do in Key West! Sloppy Joe’s has become to Key West the same as Mallory Square, the southernmost buoy, and the Hemingway House – it is a first-time tourist tradition! No, the food won’t be anything but ok. The place will be crowded. The place will be noisy and the band will be loud – it’s Key West!
  • The Hemingway House  – Perhaps if Ernest Hemingway had never spent a few years in Key West , the town may not have been as fantasized as it is. Hemingway’s former home, built for his wife, is a glimpse of another era and worth the visit.
  • Louie’s Backyard – Ok, sometime during your Key West visit, put on your best pair of flip-flops, the one last clean t-shirt and maybe wash your face. You are going to Louie’s Backyard at the southern end of the island for a nice lunch or dinner. Order the Key West Pink Shrimp. The story of the “Key West Pinks” is as interesting as the view of the Atlantic Ocean from Louie’s Backyard.

The above Top 10 Key West Must Do’s are our favorites from 40 years of watching Key West evolve. Over that period of time, most of the above attractions were there. Are there others we recommend? Here is the shortlist.

The Fed has issued its latest policy statement, announcing it will keep interest rates at the same level.

It did note inflation has eased over the past year, and it is still leaning towards eventual reductions in borrowing costs.

However it pointed out recent disappointing inflation readings, suggesting moves towards more balance in the economy had stalled.

If you're wondering why we're telling you this, it's because there is a link between the Fed's interest rate and the Bank of England's base rate.

The interplay between the two can affect the value of the pound and currency alternatives such a gold.

Market expectations for the UK base rate are often heavily influenced by what's going on in the US.

Aston Martin revealed adjusted pre-tax losses of £111m for the first three months of the year, compared with £57m a year earlier.

Analysts had expected a loss of £93m.

The losses were due to higher finance costs and the timings of its car launches.

Parents taking their kids to Taylor Swift concerts this summer might be worried their lack of knowledge will leave them feeling a bit left out.

But what if we told you you could be a mastermind?

That's the promise of a new college course ahead of the biggest pop star in the world hitting the UK in June.

The 7 May course, which is run by the  Glasgow Cylde College and is free, will give members of the public a jam-packed session that will leave them ready for the singer's upcoming  Eras Tour.

Those who enrol in a one-off college masterclass will learn about the pop star's music, set lists, crowd chants and even her "evolving wardrobe and hairstyles".

"From set lists and crowd chants to need-to-know information on each Era, the masterclass, which is being delivered by a Taylor Swift expert, will give people a whistle-stop lesson that'll leave them ready for the gig."

The cocoa market is in a particularly turbulent period, with the price of the ingredient falling to its lowest level in a month.

It comes after prices reached their highest peaks in more than four decades earlier in the year, making it reportedly more expensive than copper.

Traders had been betting on an acute supply shortage driven by poor harvests in West Africa.

However, the rally made it more expensive to maintain positions and prompted traders to pull out of the market - leaving the product vulnerable to big price swings.

The price has now fallen by 16% since the end of last week, offering some relief to chocolate makers/eaters.

The fast food giant has revealed its chefs have created a "larger, satiating burger" in a bid to boost sales, according to Bloomberg.

The mega-sized burger is reportedly designed to attract customers who want more filling patties.

It will be introduced in certain markets first to test its appeal.

McDonald's unveiled plans in December that bosses hope will boost growth by focusing on core menu items.

The chain has seen sluggish sales, partly due to its perceived support of Israel in Middle East and Muslim-majority markets.

McDonald's has denied taking any position in the ongoing conflict and said it is not responsible for the actions of its franchisees.

So far, it has launched an ad campaign highlighting what it says are improvements to its Big Mac, quarter pounder with cheese and double cheeseburger.

This is apparently the first time in the company's 84-year history that it has made changes to its classic burgers.

Discovering a hole in your favourite pair of jeans or a rip in your well-worn cosy jumper is certainly irritating - but it doesn't mean those items are destined for the bin.

In fact, ethical fashion campaigners say that's the last place your items should be going. There is usually plenty you can do to repair them - or even to avoid damage in the first place. That way, you can keep your best-loved pieces in your wardrobe for years to come.

Katrina Caspelich, from fair fashion campaign Remake, takes the Money blog through what you can do...

Store your clothes better

Clean them before storing them: Always ensure that clothes are clean before storing them. Launder or dry clean them according to the care instructions on the label. Stains and dirt can attract insects and cause fabric deterioration over time.

Use breathable storage containers: Opt for breathable storage containers such as cotton canvas bags or boxes instead of plastic bins. This allows air circulation and prevents moisture build up, which can lead to mould and mildew.

Avoid direct sunlight: Store clothes in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause colours to fade and weaken fabric fibres over time.

Hang clothes properly: Invest in quality hangers that provide adequate support to garments. Use padded or wooden hangers for delicate items like suits, dresses and knits. Avoid using wire hangers, as they can cause garments to lose their shape. Don't hang wet clothes on hangers - they can stretch.

Use garment bags: For long-term storage of formal wear or seasonal clothing, consider using garment bags to protect items from dust, insects, and moisture.

Rotate clothing: Rotate your wardrobe seasonally to prevent garments from being stored for too long without use. This helps to prevent fabric deterioration and ensures that all pieces are worn regularly.

Avoid overcrowding: Avoid cramming clothes into storage containers or closets. Overcrowding can cause wrinkles, stretching and distortion of fabric fibres. Leave some space between garments to allow for air circulation.

Store leather items properly: Leather garments should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use padded hangers to maintain their shape and avoid folding, as creases can become permanent.

Does how you wash clothes make a difference?

What exactly makes a gentle wash gentle? For delicate fabrics, you should always use cool to lukewarm water. (Hot water isn't needed unless you are concerned about bacteria and diseases like COVID-19).

Pro tip: Be wary of wringing out your wet clothes. It can seriously alter the shape of your garments.

Other options

Wash your stuff less. The only clothes that should always be washed after one wear are underwear and sweaty clothes. Most garments worn regularly should be okay to wear two to three times before washing. Unless your denim has a bad habit of stretching out, experts say you should wash them after three or four wears so they age better. You can also throw them in the freezer to kill bacteria.

Spot clean your clothes. To clean a spot, start by removing any excess spillage and blot away as much moisture as possible with a paper towel or hand towel. NO RUBBING. Use some stain remover or gentle detergent on just the stained spot. Let it air dry or use cool air to speed up the process.

Air dry. Hang your clothes outside, Italian style. For heavier items that could stretch when hanging, lay them out flat on a surface to dry.

When should you dry clean?

Read the care tags! Don't be so quick to adhere to every garment's dry clean only tag - there's lots of chemicals involved that lurk on dry-cleaned wool, cotton and polyester. Plus, lots of brands put those tags on when they lack confidence in our ability to properly and gently wash our clothes.

If it is made of wool, linen, silk, cotton or cashmere - which is likely a majority of your closet - these fabrications can handle gentle hand washes so long as you pre-treat and single wash anything with stains, as well as wash items in groups determined by fabrication and colour.

If you aren't 100% sure what exactly a garment is made of, you can always test a little spot under the sink water to see if you get a ton of colour bleeding, warping or shrinkage before going all in.

If your garment has any fancy embellishments, flocking or beads attached by glue then you should probably take it to the cleaners if it's not just in need of a little spot clean.

Pro tip: When you find yourself at the dry cleaners, you can try asking for alternatives like a liquid carbon dioxide cleaning, which uses pressurized CO2 mixed with other gentle cleaning liquids as opposed to perc.  Another option is requesting a wet cleaning method , a wash that resembles a normal washing machine but utilises special soaps and conditioners for an extra gentle wash.

How do you know when a broken item is repairable, or when it's no longer usable?

It's important to always assess the extent of the damage. Small tears, missing buttons, loose hems or minor stains are usually repairable with basic sewing skills or by taking them to a tailor.

Considering the condition of the fabric is also important. For example, if the fabric is in good shape apart from the damaged area, it may be worth repairing.

However, if the fabric is severely worn out or faded in multiple places, it may not be worth repairing. Also, some types of damage such as large holes, extensive fraying or irreparable stains may render the garment unusable or not cost-effective to repair.

Finally, it's important to consider the sentimental value of the item. If the piece holds sentimental value or is a high-quality piece, you may just want to hold on to it and invest in repairs.

If the item is no longer usable, you could upcycle or repurpose it. Get creative and turn the item into something new. Some ideas include turning old jeans into shorts, using fabric scraps for quilting or crafts, or transforming a worn-out tee into a cleaning rag.

Donation is another option. If the clothing item is still in decent condition despite the damage, consider donating it to a local charity or thrift store as some organisations accept damaged clothing for recycling or repurposing.

Finally, look for textile recycling programmes in your area. Many communities have textile recycling centres or programmes that accept old clothing, even if it's damaged, to be recycled into new textiles or other products.

How about shoes?

Like clothing, extending the wear of your shoes requires proper care and maintenance. Some ideas include rotating your shoes between different pairs of shoes every day to allow each pair to air out and recover their shape between wears.

Clean your shoes regularly to remove dust, dirt and stains.

It's also a good idea to apply waterproofing spray to protect your shoes from water, stains, snow and other environmental damage. Like clothing, it's important to attend to any signs of damage or wear as soon as possible, replacing worn-out soles, repairing loose stitching, and fixing damaged heels to prevent further deterioration. Definitely consider taking your shoes to a professional cobbler for these regular repairs!

Bitcoin has suffered its biggest monthly loss since June 2022 - amid signs that market euphoria is starting to cool.

The world's biggest cryptocurrency saw its price plunge by almost 15% in April.

Even though we're just 12 hours into a brand-new month, Bitcoin is continuing to fall further.

This digital asset is often valued in dollars rather than pounds - and certain price points tend to have psychological significance for traders.

Over the past few weeks, Bitcoin had successfully managed to avoid a big fall under $60,000 (about £48,000).

But all of that changed in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

After the $60,000 threshold crumbled, a sharp drop to $57,000 soon followed.

So... with Bitcoin down 7% over the past 24 hours, what happens next?

Well - traders are now engaged in what can best be described as an arm wrestle.

If Bitcoin manages to hold stable around $57,000, its value may start to recover.

But if selling pressure grows as American investors start to wake up and see what's happened, further declines are to be expected.

Bitcoin has now fallen by 22% since hitting an all-time high of $73,750 in March - which technically puts this cryptocurrency in a bear market.

However, avid enthusiasts will insist this is nothing more than a healthy correction, and Bitcoin's longer-term prospects are good.

One thing is clear: this is a volatile asset, and investors should only put in whatever they can afford to lose.

In what seems to be becoming a daily occurrence, four more lenders have announced mortgage rate rises.

Halifax, BM Solutions and Virgin are all doing so for the second time in around a week. They're joined by Nottingham Building Society.

Halifax are increasing rates on purchase products by up to 0.2%; BM Solutions by up to 0.24%. These begin tomorrow.

Virgin increased rates on products between 0.08% and 0.2% yesterday evening, while Nottingham has lifted rates this morning by up to 0.25%.

Mortgage rates have spiked in the last two weeks as financial markets have moved from pricing in a base rate cut in June to thinking it will come in August. Expectations of three cuts this year are now two.

The backdrop is sticky inflation in the US - and concern the global and domestic battle against rising prices isn't over yet.

Skipton had actually announced some decreases - but any optimism from this proved momentary.

Dariusz Karpowicz, director at Albion Financial Advice, told Newspage: "The atmosphere in the mortgage market is rather grim, with major players like Halifax, BM Solutions, Virgin and Nottingham Building Society repeatedly raising their fixed rates.

"This pattern of frequent rate hikes, sometimes occurring multiple times within a week, is casting a shadow over market sentiment.

"The anticipated 'spring bounce' is nowhere in sight; instead, we're witnessing a continuation of mortgage woes.

"Higher rates are expected to dampen buyer enthusiasm and potentially delay any positive momentum.

"As for when borrowers can expect relief, it hinges on broader economic stabilisation. For now, the outlook remains cautious and subdued."
