kh 101 cruise missile

Russia’s KH-101/102 cruise missiles are descendants of the Soviet era KH-55 missile. The KH-101 is the NATO designation for the missile carrying conventional warheads. It was first tested in 1995. When the cruise missile is affixed with a nuclear warhead, it is given the designation KH-102 . The 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty (INF) prompted Russia to focus on tactical short-range missiles outfitted with conventional warheads. The KH-101 is a stealthy long-range cruise missile, with advanced guidance systems capable of hitting targets with incredible accuracy. It is an air-to-surface missile primarily launched from a strategic bomber, but can also be affixed to the Su-34 fighter jet. The missile’s GLONASS navigation system works in tandem with a TV terminal guidance system, which records visual data of the ground mid-flight. This allows operators to change targets post-launch. The computer matches geographical data with pre-loaded images of the target to confirm its impact point. Russia first used the KH-101 in combat on November 17 th , 2015 against Syrian rebel groups outside of Damascus.

Strategic Implications

The KH-101/102 cruise missile utilizes radar absorbing materials and a low flight path to avoid radar and infrared sensors. It’s multi-faceted guidance system allows for it to weave between obstacles and air defenses on the path to its target, traveling at tree top levels until impact. This makes the missile very hard to detect, as it can evade defense systems in real time. Russia has found great success in using this weapon since 2015, and continues to employ it in combat operations.

On November 17 th , 2015, Russian Tu-95MS “Bear” strategic bombers departed from Engels airbase (in Russian territory) to strike ISIS command posts, weapons depots, and ammunition dumps located outside the Syrian cities of Homs, Raqqa and Aleppo. The bombers launched the KH-101 missiles from over the Mediterranean Sea, and the Russians used UAVs to monitor the effects on the targets. The bombers took a very indirect route, flying over 11,000km in total, and refueling in mid-air twice. Russian officials reported that the Khmemim airbase located in Syria was not used because its runway was too short to accommodate strategic bombers. The range and accuracy of the KH-101 was crucial to success in this mission, allowing Russia to initiate strikes from the homeland, without ever entering enemy territory. This is advantageous for them as the Tu-95MS is an outdated turboprop design with limited maneuverability. The KH-101 allows the Tu-95MS to remain useful to the Russians because it does not need to penetrate enemy airspace. This is important because the Russians reportedly maintain a force of around 60 of this model aircraft, but only 11 of the newer and faster Tu-160 supersonic bomber.

The closest U.S. equivalent to the KH-101 is the AGM-129 Advanced Cruise Missile, which boasted a similar stealth profile and long-range capability, but has been retired. The U.S. is currently developing a Long-Range Stand Off missile (LRSO) intended to match Russian cruise missile capability. LRSO missiles are less of a threat to global stability because they cannot execute short-notice, disarming attacks like ground-based ballistic missiles. Bombers are slow aircraft that take hours to reach their release points and can be recalled at any time before launch. By banning ground-based intermediate-range cruise and ballistic missiles, the INF treaty has fostered competition between the U.S. and Russia in developing these air-launched LRSO missiles. The U.S.  developing an effective LRSO counterpart to the KH-101 will determine how effective it can remain in A2AD environment and its ability to project force globally.

kh 101 cruise missile

By John Ismay

Some of the cruise missiles that Russia launched at Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure in late November were manufactured months after the West imposed sanctions intended to deprive Moscow of the components needed to make those munitions, according to a weapons research group.

Experts examined remnants of Kh-101 cruise missiles found in Kyiv, the capital, after an attack on Nov. 23 that knocked out electricity and shut down water systems in large areas of the country. One of the missiles was made this summer, and another was completed after September, markings on the weapons show, according to a report released by the investigators on Monday .

That Russia has continued to make advanced guided missiles like the Kh-101 suggests that it has found ways to acquire semiconductors and other matériel despite the sanctions or that it had significant stockpiles of the components before the war began, one of the researchers said.

The findings are among the most recent by Conflict Armament Research , an independent group based in Britain that identifies and tracks weapons and ammunition used in wars. A small team of its researchers arrived in Kyiv just before the attack at the invitation of the Ukrainian security service.

Russia Fires Kh-101 Cruise Missiles into Syria

kh 101 cruise missile

On July 5, Russian Tupolev-95MS “Bear” long-range strategic bombers fired Kh-101 cruise missiles to destroy three Islamic State ammunition depots and a command facility near the town of Aqirbat on the border of the Syrian provinces of Homs and Hama. The Kh-101 missiles flew 1,000 km before reaching their targets. The Russian Defense Ministry added in its statement that the missiles have a range of up to 4,500 km. The Tu-95MS bombers flew from the southwestern Russian city of Engels and were escorted by Sukhoi-30SM fighters based at Syria’s Khmeimim (Hmeymim)   airbase, leased to Moscow by the Assad regime.

Russia Caught Trying to Conceal Key Detail About Its Cruise Missiles

Russia is attempting to disguise details about its cruise missile production and stockpiles, according to a new report, after Moscow launched devastating large-scale strikes across Ukraine on consecutive days.

Ukrainian outlet Defense Express reported on Tuesday that missiles used in a Russian aerial assault in the early hours of January 2 were manufactured in the last few months of 2023. Serial numbers found on recovered cruise missiles are "cryptic" and "deliberately difficult to decipher," the outlet reported.

Ukraine's military said on Tuesday that Russia had launched a "massive" air attack across the country, with Ukrainian air defenses shooting down all 10 hypersonic Kinzhal missiles and three Kalibr cruise missiles. Moscow also launched 70 of its Kh-101, Kh-55 and Kh-555 cruise missiles, 59 of which Ukraine intercepted, according to Kyiv's armed forces.

Ukrainian officials compared the January 2 waves with Russia's missile onslaught on December 29, when Ukraine's air force said it shot down 86 Kh-101, Kh-55 and Kh-555 missiles. Ukraine has weathered waves of missile barrages on several days since December 29, with Russia firing hundreds of missiles of various types.

Defense Express looked at the remains of the Kh-101 cruise missiles, and argued that Moscow is attempting to change the serial numbers on the missiles to "to hide as much as possible" where the components used to make the missiles have come from.

Missile Attacks Russia

Russia has been under swathes of sanctions that Ukraine's Western backers had hoped would stymie Russia's ability to keep producing missiles. Ukraine has been vocally critical of Western parts continuing to find their way into Russian missiles wreaking havoc on Ukraine, including in Kalibr cruise missiles.

Experts told Newsweek back in July that Russia will continue to benefit from Western technology embedded in its weapons striking Ukraine as efforts to trip up Moscow's war machine fail to stop weapons production.

Disguising serial numbers on missiles like the Kh-101 could be an effort to stop Ukraine finding any data that would help Kyiv piece together information about Russian production numbers and rates, as well as how many missiles are in Moscow's stockpile, Fabian Hinz, a research fellow with the International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank, told Newsweek .

It may be a way to mask Russia's current rate of missile production, versus how quickly Moscow is going through missiles, added Gary Somerville, a research fellow with the Open-Source Intelligence and Analysis Research Group at the London-based think tank, the Royal United Services Institute.

"We already know that the Kh-101s that have been produced after the 2022 invasion began have undergone some notable technological improvements so that it is easy to tell the difference between the two iterations," he told Newsweek . "We have seen instances of components being used in Russian weapons where serial numbers or branding have been removed or attempts have been made to remove them, but this has not been consistent across the various platforms."

Newsweek has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry for comment via email.

Western analyses generally suggest that Russia is not on the brink of running out of missiles, and had eased up on missile salvos ahead of winter to conserve its stocks. Moscow has also widely supplemented its missile salvos with one-way strike drones, like the Iranian-designed Shahed-131 and larger -136 to hit Ukrainian cities, energy infrastructure and defense facilities.

On Wednesday, the British Defense Ministry said Russia had intensified its long-range strikes on Ukraine in recent days, committing a "significant proportion of the stock of air-launched cruise missiles and ballistic missiles they had built up over recent months."

"Russia has been using its missiles sparingly and should again have accumulated a decent stock of them," Frederik Mertens, a strategic analyst with the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, told Newsweek in late October.

But Russia has veered towards targeting Ukraine's military-industrial complex, rather than the energy infrastructure it hammered in the first full winter of all-out war, the U.K. government said on Wednesday.

Ukraine had braced itself for intensified strikes over the coldest months, upping its calls for air defense systems from its allies. "As winter approaches, there will be more Russian attempts to make the strikes more powerful," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in mid-November.

The intensive waves of strikes on consecutive days on the cusp of and into the new year have maintained pressure on these Ukrainian air defense systems.

But the December 29 attack cost Russia in excess of $1.2 billion, one Ukrainian outlet estimated shortly after the missile blitz.

Ukraine responded to the December 29 strikes with what Russia called an "indiscriminate combined strike" on the Russian border city of Belgorod. Moscow then said it had retaliated with another round of strikes, including an assault on "decision-making centers and military facilities" in Kharkiv. The Kremlin said its missiles killed members of Ukraine's intelligence services and its military who "were directly involved in the planning and execution of the terrorist attack in Belgorod."

Ukraine has since reported rounds of missile strikes, although Kyiv's military said on Thursday that Russia had launched only seven missiles over the past 24 hours—a significant dip from previous days.

Update 01/08/24, 11:30 a.m. ET: This article was updated to include additional comments from Gary Somerville.

Russia upgrades Kh-101 cruise missile with additional warhead

By Defence Industry Europe

Military analysts in the United States believe Russia could launch further major air attacks on Ukraine like the one that killed several dozen people on Friday, which was the largest barrage of missiles and drones since the start of the war.

Russia has successfully upgraded the Kh-101 cruise missile, now featuring a warhead that weighs approximately 800kg, effectively doubling the payload from its previous capacity of around 400kg.

The enhanced Kh-101 missile incorporates not one, but two separate warheads. The addition includes cubic-shaped penetrating elements, a type usually found in anti-aircraft weaponry but here adapted for ground strikes, offering heightened lethality against personnel.

This augmentation was achieved at the cost of reducing the missile’s fuel capacity, subsequently shortening its flight range from 5500 km to about 2250 km. Despite this reduction, the missile retains ample range for strategic operations, including potential launches from the Saratov region towards targets as far as Ukraine’s Lviv region, with significant distance to spare for maneuvers.

The concept of a dual-warhead Kh-101 has been under consideration since the mid-2010s, with Russian military sources indicating initial tests of splitting the 400kg payload. Although initially shelved, this approach has been revisited and implemented in the latest missile version, albeit with the specific deployment mechanism remaining undisclosed.

Air defence: Barak long-range interceptor hits the target during test [VIDEO]

The ongoing degradation of Ukraine’s Air Force can be halted only by the quick rearming of it with F-16 multi-role jets. Due to delayed U.S. decisions on the matter and the time necessary to train pilots, these aircraft may only make a significant military contribution in spring-summer 2024 at the earliest. In the meantime, it will be crucial for supporters to deliver further air defence systems, combat drones, and offensive missiles to Ukraine. European assistance in the reconstitution of the country’s military aviation should include extensive training, logistics, and weapon packages for the F-16.

Assessing the main needs and challenges of rearming Ukrainian Air Force

The Ukrainians use their SCALP missiles, which they received from France, very sparingly. This is because they have a very limited number of those missiles, and their effort to increase the number has not been successful.

Interesting Video Shows Russian Cruise Missile Deploying Flares During Flight

Russian missile flares

The video reportedly shows the Kh-101 air-launched cruise missile that appears to have been equipped earlier this year with countermeasure systems.

A video, allegedly recorded during the latest round of Russian attacks on Ukraine , appears to show a Kh-101 air-launched cruise missile releasing flares to deceive Ukrainian air defenses. The weapon is known to have been equipped with radio frequency countermeasures, commonly known as chaffs, since the beginning of 2023. This upgrade was discovered from the analysis of photos of Kh-101s’ wreckages, which showed the countermeasures dispensers.

This video, if confirmed authentic, could be the first time the Kh-101 was caught on camera while employing the countermeasures. It is not known how the countermeasures are controlled, as it has been assumed they are linked to a radar warning receiver or some similar sensor, but there is no photographic evidence. Another option would be a simple pre-programmed ejection of chaff/flares at timed intervals or waypoints.

Kh-101s began receiving radio frequency countermeasures (RFCMs, “chaff”) dispensers at the beginning of this 2023. It has been implied/assumed that these they are integrated with a radar warning receiver (RWR) suite, but I have not seen images of the RWR suite and sensors itself. pic.twitter.com/jFWrxWsKN8 — John Ridge 🇺🇸 🇺🇦 (@John_A_Ridge) December 29, 2023

The Kh-101 is a fairly recently developed long range cruise missile roughly analogous to the U.S. Tomahawk family of cruise missiles, which was already employed in Syria during Russian Tu-95 and Tu-160 bomber strikes in 2016 and 2017. Eight Kh-101 cruise missiles can be carried by a Tu-95 bomber, while twelve can be carried by a Tu-160.

The Kh-101 cruise missile has an effective combat range of 2,790-3,000 miles (about 4,500+ kilometers) and can carry a variety of different warheads depending on the target to be struck. The missile is reported to have low-observable (“stealth”) characteristics and is capable of adjusting its targeting while in flight to the assigned target. The Kh-101 missile is, in fact, believed to use a combination of inertial guidance and satellite navigation using the Russian GLONASS system, with opto-electronic flight correction system. Its accuracy is reported as “within 10 meters”.

Russian forces conducted large-scale cruise and ballistic missile strikes against Ukraine on the night of April 26 to 27 and have likely resumed sea based Kalibr cruise missile strikes after a long pause.

Ukrainian Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk reported on April 27 that Russian forces launched 34 missiles: nine Kh-101/555 cruise missiles from Saratov Oblast; nine Kh-59/69 cruise missiles from Belgorod Oblast and the Sea of Azov; two S-300 missiles from Belgorod Oblast; two Iskander-K ballistic missiles, four Kh-47 Kinzhal ballistic missiles from Ryazan and Tambov oblasts; and eight Kalibr cruise missiles from the Black Sea.[31] Oleshchuk stated that Ukrainian forces destroyed 21 total missiles: six Kh-101/555s, eight Kh59/69s, one Iskander-K, and six Kalibrs. Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko and Ukraine’s largest private energy operator DTEK reported that unspecified Russian missiles struck Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities in Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts and “seriously” damaged four unspecified thermal power plants (TPPs).[32] Ukrainian forces successfully conducted drone strikes against a Russian airfield and oil refineries in Krasnodar Krai on the night of April 26 to 27. Unspecified sources told Ukrainian outlet Suspilne that Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and the Ukrainian military successfully conducted drone strikes against the Kushchyovskaya airfield while “dozens” of Russian military aircraft, radar systems, and electronic warfare (EW) systems were stationed there, although ISW has not observed visual confirmation of damaged equipment at the airfield.[38] Geolocated footage published on April 27 shows the aftermath of the Ukrainian strike at the Kushchyovskaya airfield and purportedly shows damaged glide bomb kits.[39]... Suspilne’s sources stated that Ukranian drones struck the Ilskiy and Slavyansk oil refineries, damaging their distillation columns and causing fires.[41] Krasnodar Krai Governor Veniamin Kondratev stated that Ukrainian drones attempted to strike oil refineries and infrastructure facilities in Slavyanskiy, Siverskiy, and Kushchyuvskiy raions but that the strikes did not cause “serious” damage.[42] Slavyansk Oil Refinery Security Director Eduard Trudnev stated that 10 drones struck the refinery, causing it to partially stop functioning, and noted that there could be additional unseen damage.[43] The Ukrainian SBU, Special Forces (SSO), and Unmanned Systems Forces previously struck the Slavyansk Oil Refinery on the night of March 16 to 17.[44] The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) claimed that Russian forces intercepted 66 Ukrainian drones over Krasnodar Krai on the night of April 26 to 27.[45] www.understandingwar.org/...

Key Takeaways: Russian forces will likely make significant tactical gains in the coming weeks as Ukraine waits for US security assistance to arrive at the front but remains unlikely to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses. Well-provisioned Ukrainian forces will likely be able to prevent operationally significant Russian advances during Russia’s expected summer offensive effort, although Russian forces will nevertheless leverage select advantages and adaptations to pose a significant threat to Ukraine this summer. The tempo of Russian offensive operations is currently higher in the Avdiivka direction than near Chasiv Yar, as Russian forces focus on exploiting a tactical situation that is unfavorable to Ukrainian troops northwest of Avdiivka. Russian forces are likely to intensify offensive operations near Chasiv Yar in the coming weeks, however, as Chasiv Yar provides Russian forces with the opportunity for more operationally significant advances. Russian forces conducted large-scale cruise and ballistic missile strikes against Ukraine on the night of April 26 to 27 and have likely resumed sea based Kalibr cruise missile strikes after a long pause. Ukrainian forces successfully conducted drone strikes against a Russian airfield and oil refineries in Krasnodar Krai on the night of April 26 to 27. The Russian federal government continues efforts to codify increased control over migrant communities living in Russia. The Kremlin is likely setting conditions to intensify its hybrid operations against Moldova. Russian forces recently made confirmed advances north of Avdiivka and west of Donetsk City. Russian federal subjects continue to sponsor Russian military formations.

On 18 April 2024, the Mediazona website reported that 116 Russian military personnel were convicted of murder in 2023. This is nearly 900% higher than the previous year. This compares to 13 convictions in 2022 and 11 in 2021. On 8 April 2024, the New York Times, citing Olga Romanova, head of Russia Behind Bars, found that 15,000 pardoned prisoners had returned to Russia. Russian media outlet Vertska reported that former convicts were prosecuted against in 190 criminal cases, including 20 murder or attempted murder cases in 2023. On 24 April 2024, it was reported that an ex-Wagner prisoner was sentenced by the Kirov court to 22 years for murdering and raping an elderly woman, following his discharge. The high numbers of homicides by serving and veteran Russian soldiers are likely in part due to enduring war-related chronic poor mental health issues. These include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and battlefield desensitisation to violence. Alcoholism and drug use from low...

Poland discussed incident with Russian missile with NATO

P olish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski briefed NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the details of the incident involving a Russian missile that violated Polish airspace on March 24th, according to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The head of Polish diplomacy stressed that this is another case where the actions of Russia, a country that continues its unjustified and brutal aggression against Ukraine, also threaten the security of NATO member states.

In addition, the parties discussed ways to strengthen the security of the Polish airspace and the airspace of the Alliance, as well as the upcoming meeting of NATO foreign ministers, which will focus on preparations for the NATO Summit in Washington in July of this year.

Incident with a Russian missile

On March 24, Russian occupiers once again carried out a massive missile strike on Ukraine. The enemy used 29 missiles launched from 14 Tu-95MS aircraft and 28 drones.

One of the missiles, a Kh-101, flew into Polish airspace and passed over the Lublin Voivodeship. The air defense forces did not shoot down the missile, as they were confident it would return to Ukrainian territory.

After the incident, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russian Ambassador Sergei Andreyev. However, the diplomat did not appear at the appointed time.
