Himachal is located in the western part of the Himalayas, with a large majority of the area situated near the Dhauladhar Range.

Pin Parvati is a challenging 10 trek across the Himalayas that covers nearly 100km (60 miles) and tops out at the pass of the same name (17,457 ft / 5319m). The trek offers a handful of challenges ranging from route finding in the dense forests of the Great Himalayan National Park, to challenging river crossings and finally negotiating the snow fields and glacier near the pass. The risk is not without reward as the trekker gets to see two completely different sides of the Himalayas. The Parvati Valley is quite lush and with rich forests while Pin Valley on the other side of the pass is dry, cold and inhospitable, but not without its own beauty. If that’s not enough you can rest and relax at the hot springs of Parvati Kund and if luck is on your side you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard which is occasionally seen in the region. The best time for trekking here due to the heavy snowfalls is between July and September.
Solang Valley on Beas Kund Trek
Starting near Manali this is a relatively easy trek that can be completed in 2 to 3 days. Given its easy access and proximity to a major domestic tourist destination it can be quite crowded during the peak season in October (the trail itself is passable from June to October). It’s a great hike if you have a limited time in the Himalayas and want to hit the trail. The trailhead at Solang Nala (2480m/8100ft), easily reached by bus or taxi, is a popular meadow for local picnicking about 14km from Manali on a good rood. The trek heads up the Beas River valley offering great views of the surrounding Himalayas. Lush meadows frequented by local shepherds give way to rocks and boulders as you make your way up the river. The trek ends at a small glacial tarn (lake) at the head of the Beas River (3690m/12100ft) where you should be able to find a good campsite and return the following day.
Kinnaur Kailash Range in Himachal Pradesh
Mount Kinnaur Kailash (6349m) lies in the far northeast section of Himachal Pradesh and should not be confused with Mount Kailash in Tibet. Given its close proximity to Tibet foreign visitors need to obtain an inner-line permit. The best approach to this 9 day trek is from Shimla and then drive onward to Sangla and from their Thangi (best done over 2 days). Just getting to the starting point if a fantastic journey through what is a relatively seldom visited region known for its ancient monasteries and traditional cultures. Charang La (5300m / 17400 ft) is the high point reached after several days trekking. The deep canyons are home to a myriad of orchards and these small strips of green stand in sharp contrast to the surrounding mountain peaks which are dry and arid. The trek is significant as a religious pilgrimage and is known for a large rock formation changes in color with the sunlight and resembles a Shiva Lingam.
Deo Tibba Base Camp Trek
This is a relatively easy 5 day trek that starts close to the hill station of Manali and reaches a high point of 3700m/12100ft at the base of the Deo Tibba Glacier. The route takes you through pleaseant green meadows used by the local Gaddi Shepherds. An easy side excursion takes you to Rohtang Pass for stupendous views of the Pir Panjal Range. If you are looking for a trekking option around Manali this is a good choice and slightly longer then the Beas Kund trek mentioned earlier.
Dhauladhars or White Mountains are a range of the Himalayas
This is a pleasant 4 day trek that starts at Ganachalani which is about a 6 hour drive from Manali. The trek passes through some inspiring mountain scenery with views of the Bara Banghal and Pir Panjal ranges. The trail leaving Ganachalani starts with a climb over Chanderkhani Pass (3650m/11972ft) before heading down through pine and oak forests. The highlight of the trek is definitely the remote and isolated village of Malana lying at the base of the giant peaks of Deotibba and Chandrakhani. This ancient village said to the “Athens of the Himalayas” is said to be the world’s oldest democracy which functions through 11 council members. The villagers consider outsiders to be untouchable and looked down upon so its important to stay on the trails and not touch their houses although they are perfectly peaceful.

11 best summer treks in Himachal Pradesh: easy to challenging
By Shradha Shahani
Himachal Pradesh is known as a trekker’s paradise for good reason. There’s something for everyone here. New to trekking? The two-day Triund Trek from Dharamshala is a great place to start. Have kids in tow? With spacious camps, the Tirthan Valley hike from Manali is ideal for families. Been there, done that and looking for a new challenge? The Parang-La trek to Lahaul will test your strength at every turn, but the views are equally rewarding. We spoke to three adventure travel companies—Aquaterra, Exsul Travel and India Hikes—to get their intel on some of the best summer hikes in Himachal Pradesh. Here’s the list.
Treks in Himachal Pradesh
Bara-bhangal trek.
Bara Bhangal trek. Photo: Aquaterra
Duration: 13 days; Level: Demanding; Highest point: 16,000ft; Starting point: Manali Look forward to campsites in meadows of wildflowers, lakes and sheep on this trek. Bara Bhangal is a secluded village in the Kangra district, and the trail—also known as the Shephard’s Trek—takes you through the beautiful Kalihani and Thamsar passes, traversing from Manali to Bir-Billing. The altitude is not the challenge here, all the campsites sit below 4,000m. But it’s constant scaling and descending that make the trek strenuous. The summer months of June-September are the only times you can go on this trek, as Bara-Bhangal receives heavy snow and is cut off during the winter. Book via Aquaterra.
Deo Tibba trek
Deo Tibba in Manali.
Duration: 6-8days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 14,000ft; Starting point: Jagatsukh (10km from Manali)
The Deo Tibba trek is a sight for sore eyes, especially during the months of May-June. The trek trails through dense forests of pine, spruce, oak and silver birches that don a bright green shade this time of the year. While you catch your breath through the moderately-challenging trail, stop and stare at the snow-capped mountains of Deo Tibba (6001m), Norbu Peak (5226m) and Jagatsukh Peak (5050m). At the foot of the Deo Tibba, you’ll be greeted by the emerald waters of the Chotta Chandratal Lake, and suddenly all the huffing and puffing will seem worth it. Book via Aquaterra .
Parang-La trek
On the way to Parang La pass from Ladakh.
Duration: 16 days; Level: Challenging; Highest point: 18,400ft; Starting point: Kibber
Wildlife enthusiasts, this trek is for you. The Parang La trail traces the trade route between Spiti and Tibet and begins from the meadows of Kibber, the ground for Spiti horses and elusive snow leopards. It descends the Kibber gorge and steeps the pass of Parang La, the source of the Pare Chu River, which flows into Tibet and then re-enters India. The trail passes by Rupshu Valley, which teems with kiangs (Tibetan wild asses). On the last leg of the journey, keep your eyes peeled for bar-headed geese, black-necked cranes and Brahminy ducks, as you camp by the beautiful Tso Moriri. Book via Aquaterra
Hampta Pass
En route to Hampta Pass. Photo: India Hikes
Shalba Sarda
Muskaan Chandrapota
Arundhati Ail
Duration: 6 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 14,000ft; Starting point: Jobra (one-hour drive from Manali)
Himachal Pradesh has its very own Valley of Flowers. Around mid-July, the Kullu Valley is bathed in wildflowers. Getting to the pass is no easy task, though. After wading through a bed of flowers, you will need to scale many ledges, which may make you believe you’re close to the pass, but you never really know until you get there. The views make up for it—while one side of the pass overlooks lush landscapes, the other shows you Lahaul’s rugged terrain. July to September is the best time to go, but if you’re ready to brave the cold, June is a great time too. From day three on, you’ll trudge your way through snowy terrains until you reach Lahaul. Book via India Hikes .
Tirthan Valley
Tirthan Valley, Himachal Pradesh
Duration: 4-6 days; Level: Easy; Highest point: 10,000ft; Starting point: Manali
If you’re a rookie or have kids above the age of seven in tow, the Tirthan Valley Trek is a great place to start. The trekking distances are short and the camp in the Sajwar region offers creature comforts, with spacious tents and washrooms. The months of June to September are the best time to visit. The meadows are lush and the skies clear-blue around this time of the year. The trail follows the Great Himalayan National Park, home to blue sheep, musk deer and the Himalayan tar. Book via Adventure Pulse .
Bhrigu Lake
On the way to Bhrigu Lake. Photo: India Hikes
Duration: 4 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 4,287m; Starting point: Gulaba (24km from Manali)
On most treks, reaching a sprawling meadow may take at least a day or two of arduous hiking. But on this trek, look forward to a carpet of green within 10 minutes of your journey. These meadows are at their lushest from July to September. Horses and sheep are ambling around, and the scenery is framed by the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges. Don’t let the duration of the trek misguide you. The trail is still daunting, as it takes you to an altitude of 14,000ft, to Bhrigu Lake which mirrors the snow-capped mountains around you. Book via India Hikes.
The hike to Rupin Pass. Photo: India Hikes
Duration: 7 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 14,000ft; Starting point: Jiskun (10 hours from Shimla)
At every turn, there’s a new vista to see. The Rupin Pass trek is full of surprises. About 20 minutes into the trail, you can picnic by or dip your toes in the Rupin River, which cascades down the Dhauladhar Range for over 2,000ft to form a waterfall. Trekkers camp by this site for two days and then carry on to discover snowfields and glacial valleys, even in the months of May and June. The trek is not for the faint-hearted, though. The pass crossing is a 200-metre steep climb through rocky, snow-flanked paths. But the trail descends to a campsite surrounded by grasslands and a stream framed by snow-capped peaks. It’s the perfect place to catch your breath. Book via India Hikes.
Triund Trek
Triund. Photo: Mohit Khatri/Unsplash
Duration: 2 days; Level: Easy; Highest point: 9,300ft; Starting point: Dharamkot
The Triund Trek is perfect for a short weekend getaway in the Himalayas. Ir can be done in 4-6 hours but camp the night to really enjoy the views of Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar range. While the trail is short, it’s steep. But every now and then, you will be able to catch your breath during easy, flat trails through rhododendron, pine and coniferous forests. The highlight of the trek is the beautiful sunsets that paint Himachal’s skies and the starry nights.
Day Treks in Himachal Pradesh
Bari village.
On the way to Bari Village. Photo: Damini Rathod/Unsplash
Duration: 45 minutes; Level: Easy; Highest point: 5,900ft; Starting point: Bir
This one’s an easy, laidback trek for beginners. Start your day with a cup of coffee at June 16 Cafe, and trace parachutes gliding in the skies as you walk past Bir’s forests. Quench your thirst at the natural springs in Bari and ascend the centuries-old slate stairs laid out by the early settlers of Bara Bhangal. Visit the local temple, and picnic in the beautiful oak forests while enjoying the views of the Kangra Valley and Dhauladhar mountains. Book via Exsul Travel .
The Hostan Hike
The hike to Hostan
Duration: 3-5 hours; Level: Moderate to Difficult; Highest Point: 6,800ft; Starting point: Palampur
It may not look like this path is well-tread, but shepherds herd hundreds of goats and sheep over this treacherous trail to get them to grazing lands in the upper reaches of the Himalayas. It’s the same shepherd-turned-guides who lead you to the top. The landscapes change as you climb, from pine and cedar slopes to rock shrubbery. You will learn about plants like basunti that help heal wounds and how local shepherds make a spicy chutney from rhododendrons. Your views at 6,800ft will comprise snow-capped mountains and mountain homes. Sit back on the lush grass and enjoy the vistas along with breakfast. Book via Exsul Travel .
Husky Walks in Manali
The view from Majhach village
Duration: 3-5 hours; Level: Intermediate; Highest Point: 5,900ft ; Starting point: Manali
What’s better than a hike along Manali’s snow-laden landscapes? A hike led by huskies. This four-hour trek is guided by a pack of nine pooches that take you along apple orchards leading to a deep gorge along the Ahilya River. You can either take the path to a hidden waterfall or the road leading to the Majhach village which offers panoramic views of the Kully valley. Sip on a cup of coffee at Cafe Ronin before you descend. Book via Exsul Travel.

1. Bhrigu Lake Trek 2. Kareri Lake Trek 3. Prashar Lake trek 4. Kheerganga Trek 5. Churdhar Peak Trek
1. Bhrigu Lake
How about walking over an endless grassy carpet? One that isn’t artificial, though you have placed it on your balcony. Have you?
The Bhrigu Lake Trek attracts hikers due to the mythological nature of the lake . This trek lies in Himachal Pradesh, about 20-25 kilometres North of Manali , and can be accessed from Gulaba . It is the place where the Great Maharishi Bhrigu sat in deep meditation. And as the name suggests, you’ll meet a lake at the end of the trek. Even though the lake is beautiful, the trek has more to offer than just the lake. Its grasslands are worth the hike as well. It appears as if the grasslands are in an endless array of green dunes; perhaps even beyond.
Imagine having such meadows right at your fingertips. It is no wonder that we go cuckoo bananas over places like Kashmir, Switzerland , which are full of landscapes like these.
There is a magnificent view of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal mountains ranges from these grassy knolls.
The best time to do this trek is between July to September when the meadows are at their lushest green. It’s like you’re on cloud 9 that too having a garden. All and all Bhrigu Lake Trek is one of the best summer treks in Himachal Pradesh . Located just a few miles from Manali, it is a great trek for families and beginners alike. Duration – 4 Days and 3 Nights.
2. Kareri Lake Trek
Kareri Lake is one of the best treks in Himachal Pradesh for a good reason. It has two entirely different landscapes and that is enough to take your breath away. The trek starts from Nolli bridge near Kareri Village which is around 10 km from Dharamshala . A few minutes of the trek you’ll find yourself in the dense forest dotted with pines and shrubs .
The Kareri Lake Trek is an excellent weekend adventure for those looking to steer clear of the more well-travelled trails of Himachal Pradesh . If you’re a newbie and want to trek, this definitely will be a great choice for you. Obviously not alone; groups will do best.
In the latter half, there’s another bridge made to cross the Nyund Nallah . It can be easily spotted as there’s a small shack that sells magic, bread omelette, and tea . In short, a good place to catch your breath before starting. As you continue the trek, the forests take a break and it’s the rocky grasslands along the banks of Nallah you’ll witness. A keen eye will recognize Himalayan Griffon Vultures hovering above.
Once you’re at the top you’ll see a Temple Dedicated to Lord Shiva on one side of the lake and on the contrary there are the almighty Dhauladhars Covered in Snow . Absorb the beauty of the lake and click pictures from your mind if not cameras! The Best Time to do this Trek is from May to September . Duration – 2 Days and 1 Night.
3. Prashar Lake Trek
The pristine blue Prashar lake , located in the Mandi District of Himachal Pradesh , is one of the most iconic Trekking Destinations in Himachal Pradesh . The lake is considered sacred to Prasher Rishi who meditated here years ago. And then in the 13th century , Raja Bansen built a Pagoda Style Temple to honour the sage. Hence it is Named Prashar Lake .
In the bowl-shaped valley of the Dhauladhar range , the Prashar Lake Trek takes you through dense forests and offers snow-capped mountain views , making it a surreal place in Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, Prashar Lake has a small circular island floating on its surface. As per the locals, there is no particular pattern to the movement – it could be in the same place for months, or it could move several times in one month.
The trek to Prashar lake offers the best of both worlds: a short but exciting adventure as well as a closer connection with nature. The best part is yet to come. This trek can be done all year round, isn’t that good news? On top of that, it fits in perfectly with your long weekend plans & wanderlust fix as it is a short trip. Duration- 2 Days and One Night.
4. Kheerganga Trek
This is one of the most beautiful weekend treks in Himachal Pradesh . Kheerganga is a site of spirituality, at its core, and the trail leading up to it is surrounded by immense natural beauty . A bus or a cab can take you to Barshaini , the basecamp of the Kheerganga trek , from Kasol or Manikaran or direct from Bhuntar Airport – whichever is most convenient. From there, it is a short 11-12 km hike uphill. The trail can be completed in 5-6 hours easily, even if you stop for a meal or a break in the middle at one of the local cafes along the way.
While on your way, you will pass a Shiva shrine at Rudranag Temple and the Small Village of Nakthan . Along the way, you’ll also see sprawling green pastures over rugged cliffs lined by Hot Springs . And once you’re up there, you can rejuvenate yourself by taking a dip in a natural hot pool called Parvati Kund . At night, marvel at the stars while you stay overnight in a tent. The best time to do this trek is between May and November . Duration- 2 Days and One Night.
5. Churdhar Trek
With an elevation of 12,000 feet , Churdhar Peak , the highest point of the Outer Himalayan Range , is located in the Sirmour District of Himachal. This region is also called Churi Chandni , meaning “mountains in bangles of snow” . One gets to see endless peaks and snow-capped ranges of Badrinath and Kedarnath . Churdhar trek is one of the fascinating summer treks in Himachal Pradesh . When the skies are clear, one gets to witness the peaks of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Shimla, Chail, Kufri, Kasauli, and even the Sutlej River Basin . Imagine what it would be like on the top? ‘Surreal’ is exactly not what we want to say. It’s indescribable.
At its top is a giant sculpture of Lord Shiva enshrined in Shirgul Devta Temple , which holds great religious significance for the people (takes you back to the ancient times of Ramayana and Mahabharata ), but it also has considerable geographic significance.
George Everest , the Surveyor-General of British India who is the inspiration behind the name Mount Everest , used Churdhar Peak during his tenure for sightings and astronomical measurements of many Himalayan mountains .
Those who wish to trek to Churdhar Peak may do so from Nohradhar via Solan or Sarahan in Chaupal in the Shimla district . During the last hour of the trek, you will have to cross a steep moraine. However, the impressive view from the top is worth the effort. The best time to do this trek is between April and November . Duration – Two Days and One Night.
If trekking through these top summer trekking routes in Himachal is so wonderful, why wouldn’t you want to behold the winsome mountains, lush meadows, and sparkling rivers , which will certainly blow you away? There is no way you can disagree that Himachal Pradesh is the most sought-after destination not only in North India but in your heart as well. And we hope that this entire blog eased off your pain of where to plan your next trip in Himachal Pradesh .
