Chandragiri The Mini-Tibet in Odisha

Chandragiri is located in the green valley of Gajapati district of Odisha, Chandragiri is famous for the Tibetan settlement and for the Buddhist monastery located by the side of it. 

Chandragiri, one of many diverse places that you can find in Odisha, is also called by many as 'Mini-Tibet'.

The rare scenic beauty and the picturesque landscape surrounded by luxuriant tropical forest, gurgling rivers, exquisite mountain slopes and roaring hilltops makes it a perfect adobe for travelers.

 History About the Place:

The story goes back to 1960's, those first refugees arrived here in the early 1960s after fleeing into exile with Dalai Lama, following the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959.

According to Indian government resettlement program several number of camps were established around India ; today the refugees number between 110,000 and 120,000 all over the country and one of the place being Chandragiri.

How to reach Chandragiri:

The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar (254 Kms by road via Mohana). From Bhubaneswar, you can travel by road or by train to reach Berhampur.

Berhampur is one important railway station in Howrah-Chennai rail route. From Berhampur Take a cab or public transport to reach Chandragiri.

If you are traveling from Berhampur take the road towards Digapahandi, Taptapani. You can visit the hot spring at Taptapani and then travel towards Mohana. At the entrance of Mohana town take the left turn and travel 18 KM to reach Chandragiri.

• Chandragiri is 90 KM from Berahampur.

From Chandragiri town, you can travel 4 KM to reach Buddhist Monastery (8 KM from Chandragiri Bus stop), popularly known as Jeerango temple. This is a school for Tibetan studies and there are nearly thirty students staying and reading different courses here.

A Trip to Jirang - The Tibet of Odisha

Ever since I was at home, I have been inching to explore different parts of Odisha. I have never enjoyed visiting places like a typical tourist; time-bound and always in a hurry not to miss any important landmarks. I like my vacations slow-paced and leisurely, and what better way to do so than a road-trip in my own new car!

I had heard of this place called Jirang and was very interested to visit it. Its a small town nestled in the hills of Chandragiri, located in the Gajapati district of Odisha about 270 kms from the capital Bhubaneswar. Its one of the settlements of the Tibetan refugees in India. The Tibetans call this place Phuntsokling ("Land of Happiness and Plenty"). South Asia's largest Buddhist monastery is situated here - the Padma Sambhava Maha Vihara monastery. On the same route is the Chilika lake. So I and my wife decided to have an extended weekend getaway in Jirang and Rambha.

This is what I wanted to see!

There are not much options of accomodation at Jirang. There is a Tibetan guest-house, but we weren't sure of that. So we booked our room at OTDC Panthanivas at Taptapani, which is about 40kms from Jirang. For Chilika lake, bookings were done at OTDC Panthanivas at Rambha.

Chapter 1 - Taptapani

We started our journey from Bhubaneswar early morning on Friday. I  looking at the road ahead near the hills of Khorda, while we were having breakfast. This was supposed to be a monsoon trip, but the skies were clear and beautiful!

Post lunch we went exploring nearby. There was a deer park right next to the panthanivas. The deers are accustomed to be fed by the visitors and so quite a few came near us. But unfortunately we didn't have any food for them.

Taptapani means "hot water" in Odiya. This place has a small hot water spring where tourists bathe, but we didn't.

Jiranga Buddhists Monastery

Chapter 2 - Jirang

Next morning on Saturday, we left Taptapani panthanivas for Jirang, which was 40 kms away We knew we were getting closer when we started seeing the Buddhist prayer flags on the road and in private residences. Beautiful roads, lush green fields on either side, mountains in the distance. Reached the Padma Sambhava Maha Vihara monastery. Prayer flags fluttering in the wind. These flags are traditionally used to promote peace, wisdom, compassion, and strength. Tibetans believe the wind will blow the prayers and mantras in to the surroundings, spreading goodwill and compassion. The colors on the flags represents the 5 elements - Blue for sky or space, White for air or clouds, Red for fire or sun, Green for water or nature and Yellow for earth.

Standing 70ft high, the monastery was designed by architects from Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. It was built by the local masons over 6 years, at a cost of Rs. 8 crore.

Spread over an area of 10 acres and constructed in Atanpuri style of architecture of Nalanda, the monastery houses around 200 monks.

There are several temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities on the hill, which are visited by pilgrims and devotees. 

Mahendragiri Hill is also a popular destination for trekking and camping enthusiasts, who can enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility of the place.

He is revered as the second Buddha by many Tibetan Buddhists. In Gajapati district, there is a 12-meter-high statue of Padmasambhava that was installed by the Dalai Lama in 2012.

The statue is located in Rewalsar town, which is also known as Tso Pema in Tibet.

The town has a sacred lake that is associated with many legends and miracles related to Padmasambhava. 

The Padmasambhava statue and the lake are visited by many Buddhist pilgrims and tourists who seek blessings and peace.

Gandahati Waterfall

Gandahati Waterfall is a spectacular waterfall that cascades from a height of about 100 feet into a pool below.

The waterfall is surrounded by lush green forests and hills that create a serene and picturesque setting.

The waterfall is also home to many wild animals, especially elephants, that come to drink water from the pool. 

Gandahati Waterfall is located about 30 km from Paralakhemundi town and can be reached by road.

The palace has a secret passage that connects it to the main palace of the Maharaja in Paralakhemundi.

The palace has a Durbar Hall that showcases exquisite woodwork and paintings.

The palace also has a garden and an orchard, which add to its beauty and elegance.

The Brundaban Palace is now under the control of the Department of Tourism , Government of Odisha, and is open to visitors.

Mankadadian Waterfall

Mankadadian Waterfall is a hidden gem that lies in the dense jungle of Gajapati district. It is located near Kankada village under Sialilati panchayat, about 70 km from Brahmapur town.

The Mankadadian waterfall drops from a height of about 100 feet over hilly terrain and creates a mesmerizing sight. 

The Mankadadian waterfall can only be reached by trekking for about 2 km along a stream, which makes it an adventurous and thrilling experience.

The waterfall is ideal for nature lovers and photographers who can enjoy the pristine beauty and solitude of the place.

Khasada Waterfall

Khasada Waterfall is another stunning waterfall that is located near Chandragiri town of Gajapati district. It is located about 100 km from Brahmapur town and 13 km from Chandragiri.

The waterfall flows from a height of about 50 feet and forms a pool below. The waterfall is surrounded by greenery and hills that create a scenic backdrop. 

The waterfall is also close to a temple dedicated to Goddess Brahmani, who is worshipped as a form of Goddess Shakti.

Luha Khamba Temple is situated about 27 km from R.Udayagiri and 82 km from Paralakhemundi.

The temple enshrines Lord Shiva in an iron form, hence the name Luha Khamba, which means iron pillar.

The temple is believed to be the place where Lord Parashurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, meditated and worshipped Lord Shiva. 

The temple is also famous for its Karthika Purnima festival when devotees flock to the temple to witness the rituals and offerings.

To reach Luha Khamba Temple, one has to trek for about 6 to 7 km up the hill, which makes it an adventurous and rewarding journey.

Harabhangi Dam

Harabhangi Dam is a large dam that is located about 6 kilometers northwest of Adava town in Gajapati district.

Harabhangi Dam is situated on the Harabhangi River, which is a tributary of the Rushikulya River.

The Harabhangi Dam was constructed for irrigation purposes and has a capacity of 8,625 hectometers. The dam has a scenic location surrounded by mountains and green forests. 

The dam also has a park and a guesthouse for visitors. The dam is a popular picnic spot for locals and tourists alike, who can enjoy boating, fishing, and photography at the site.

Brahmani Devi Waterfall

Brahmani Devi Waterfall, also known as Karchabadi Waterfall, is a splendid waterfall that flows from the springs at the top of the hills.

Brahmani Devi Waterfall is located about 8 km from Mohana town and 77 km from Berhmapur town.

The waterfall flows only in monsoons and winters, creating a refreshing sight. A large number of tourists come here in winter for picnics and group feasts near the falls of Brahmani Devi.

The waterfall is also close to the Shree Ram Temple, which adds to its religious significance.

Bittarasai Waterfall

Bittarasai Waterfall is a hidden treasure that lies on the borderline of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. It is situated about 45 km from Jiranga town and 60 km from Paralakhemundi town.

The Bittarasai Waterfall falls from a height of about 100 feet into a pool below. The waterfall is surrounded by lush green forests and hills that create a serene and picturesque setting.

The waterfall is also near Kalingadala Dam, which is another attraction in the region. The waterfall is a perfect place for nature lovers and adventure seekers who can enjoy the beauty and thrill of the place.

• The water falls is a popular picnic destination of the region, but one has to carry all the essential items from Chandragiri and cook there.
• Locals throng the area during the weekends and holidays..
• It’s an ideal place for bathing as the waters aren’t too deep, so carry your bathing gear.
• You need to carefully cross the flowing water as it is very sleepy.
• Also aviod childern from top of rocks
• There are a few shops selling snacks, cold drinks, bottled drinking water and biscuits. Other than that not much is available.
• Carry essential items and food with you.
• The nearest ATM and petrol pump is located at Chandragiri..
• To visit Khasada, its better to hire cab from Taptapani ( OTDC Panthanivas can be contacted for the same) or one can hire an auto from Chandragiri. Buses ply to Chandragiri from Taptapani.
• Camera/Video allowed.
• You will enjoy in that place but no hotels and medical facility far there I suggest others if you go to that place carry food and medical kit with you because you got nothing in that place.

Earlier it is very hard to reach Khasada. Now the problem is slowly getting solved , after coming to consideration of state tourism department.

• This fall has find a place in the tourist attractions in Orissa due to it’s vicinity to the Jiranga Monastery. There are lots of such falls abundantly found in Koraput and Gajapati districts of Orissa. But it is very nice place for picnic .

• The water fall is located between three mountains…..crystal clear water. The place can be developed into a beautiful getaway. One can pitch a tent and trek upstream…. greenery all around. Also can visit a few temples close by.

• No hotels/Dhabas available near, so plan accordingly.Do not forget to visit the Buddhist Monachry nearby.

Paralakhemundi is the major city and district HQ in Gajapati district, this District is a recently formed district that was created from Ganjam District on 2 October 1992. The district was named after the name of Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deb , who was the King of the estate.

This district has 7 Tehsils, 7 Blocks, 1,534 Villages, 149 Gram Panchayats, 11 Police stations, and only 1 subdivision Paralakhemundi which is also the headquarters of the Gajapati district.

The total population of the Gajapati District according to the census of 2011 was 5,77,817 in which a total number of males was 2,82,882 and a total number of females were 2,94,935.

Agriculture and Industries are the main sources of income for the people of this district. Most of the population of this district depend on this occupation for their livelihood.

Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, in the Bargarh district of Odisha, is perched on the edge of the blue backwaters of Hirakud Dam. It’s noted for its beautiful scenery and easy access to animals. The sanctuary is an eco-sensitive zone, flanked on the eastern and northern sides by the Hirakud reservoir edges. Two big Olive Ridley Turtle nestings were seen for the first time on this beach in early 2018. They happened initially in February and then again 49 days later in April. It is about 327 kilometres (by NH16) from Gahirmatha Beach.

Barehipani is the second tallest waterfall in India and the highest in Orissa. The waterfall is 1309 feet tall, only 55 metres shorter than India’s highest waterfall, Kunchikal Falls. The Budhabalanga River, which runs across the mountain, is the source of the waterfall. The waterfalls in two drops, making it a two-tiered one.

The river Budhabalanga cascades down from the Simlipal hills, creating these magnificent falls that are 1200 feet (399 metres) high. The Joranda falls are near the Barehipani waterfalls. This waterfall, while not as large as the Barehipani, is noted for its beauty. Throughout the year, both of these waterfalls are full of water. The water cascading down from the falls that run in little streams throughout the forest, which is located inside the borders of the Simlipal national park, which is home to the magnificent Bengal tiger as well as the rare white tiger species in Orissa, serves as the lifeblood of the forest’s creatures. Chandragiri is a lush valley in the Gajapati district of Odisha that is known for its Tibetan population and Buddhist monastery. Many people refer to Chandragiri, one of the many diverse places in Odisha, as “Mini-Tibet.”

When boating, one may see the Gharials, or Indian fish-eating crocodiles, that live in the river. The Mahanadi River runs through a 14-mile-long gorge, which is why the town was given the name Satkosia, which comes from Saat Kros, an old local measurement.

In Satkosia, the Odisha Forest Development Corporation offers a variety of housing choices. The Kuanria Deer Park & Dam, as well as the Kantilo Neelamadhav Temple, are nearby.

Pattachitra art is primarily recognised in Odisha’s historical crafts hamlet of Raghurajpur. The art form is utilised to embellish none other than Lord Jagannath and his siblings, the Lord of the Universe. The art form’s association with the holy trinity elevated it and helped it gain prominence.

Chandipur Beach, also known as the ‘hide-and-seek’ beach, is a long expanse of golden sand surrounded by Casuarina trees, clear seas, and rich coastal flora. Every day, though, a peculiar natural phenomenon happens here. During low tide, the seawater recedes up to 5 kilometres (3 miles) twice a day, leaving just the shells behind. During high tide, the water returns.

The biodiversity of sea creatures in the area has been greatly enhanced as a result of this extreme natural phenomenon. When the seawater returns, it brings horseshoe crabs and red crabs with it, which would otherwise live further away from the beach.

This is thought to be a one-of-a-kind phenomenon at this beach. The tide retreats at different times depending on the moon cycle, but it happens every day. The low and high tides are well-known among the locals. Whether the tide is in or out, the sunrises and sunsets are exceptionally beautiful at this beach.
