Jelly Roll reflects on his path from juvenile detention to CMT Award winner
By Analisa Novak
Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 12:17 PM EDT / CBS News
Rising from the shadows to the spotlight, Jason Bradley DeFord, known as Jelly Roll, finds himself in awe of his meteoric rise within the country music industry. Once a name few knew, Jelly Roll has now etched his mark in the country music scene by securing Grammy nominations, bagging multiple People's Choice Awards, and earning three wins Sunday at the CMT Awards , including Video of the Year.
Amid his rising celebrity, he has maintained a down-to-earth demeanor—which his fans have grown to love.
"None of this has settled on me. I am the most average guy ever," Jelly Roll told Gayle King on "CBS Mornings" Monday, the day after his CMT wins.
His performance at the CMT Awards, electric and emotionally charged, left both the audience and Jelly Roll himself in awe of the moment's intensity.
"Feeling them and being able to give a speech and being able to try to try to talk directly and pour into somebody's living room, that just fires me up in a way, man. I think it's God," he said.
By the time he accepted his first award for performance of the year, Jelly Roll had been overcome with the magnitude of the moment.
"I was just overwhelmed with emotions. I started crying because I thought about the whole year...from that moment," he said. "It's amazing what God can do in a year."
In a heartfelt moment during his acceptance speech for Male Video of the Year, Jelly Roll addressed those in juvenile detention, drawing from his past struggles in Tennessee with the law, including arrests for marijuana possession and attempted robbery that put him in and out of jail.
"I just want them to know that you can really overcome this. This is just a moment of your life and who you were isn't who you are, and that you can change at any given moment of the changes around the corner for all of us. I truly believe that I epitomize it as much as I can," Jelly Roll said.
Jelly Roll's unique blend of country music with a gritty, hip-hop-like sound, along with his distinctive tattoos—some of which he humorously regrets—has set him apart in the industry. He's not alone in bringing a distinctive sound to country. Fellow artists like Lainey Wilson and Cody Johnson are also making a name for themselves—with the support of Jelly Roll.
"These are like my friends. These are people that pour into me," he said.
Jelly Roll will be busy this summer as he prepares to embark on his Beautifully Broken Tour.
As he looks forward to his first arena tour, including performances at landmark venues like New York City's Madison Square Garden, Jelly Roll contemplates just how far his dreams have come and just how much further they will go. "My dream was too small. I'm having to give new dreams now, I'm dreaming bigger," he said.

Jelly Roll celebrated another big night in Austin with sweeping win at the 2024 CMT Awards
The biggest stars in country music shone brightly at the Moody Center in Austin Sunday at the 2024 CMT Awards.
Jelly Roll was the night's top winner, bringing home three trophies, including the night's top honors, and delivering three impassioned speeches.
Brittney Spencer and Parker McCollum collaborated for a fiery performance of their song "Burn It Down." Sam Hunt channeled Johnny Cash's concert in Folsom Prison when he hit the stage with his new song "Locked Up."
And it was a night of firsts. Trisha Yearwood debuted a new song on stage, giving a moving performance of the brand new tune "Put It In A Song." Keith Urban performed his new song "Straight Line" live for the very first time.
The most moving moment of the night, though, was an emotional tribute to the late Toby Keith. The "Should've Been A Cowboy" singer died in February after battling cancer. Honoring him onstage through song were Brooks & Dunn, Lainey Wilson and rock legend Sammy Hagar.
2024 CMT Awards: Winners and nominees from this year's show at Austin's Moody Center
Jelly Roll wins three awards, delivers rousing speeches
Jelly Roll was the talk of the town at this year's CMT Awards.
At one point, Kelsea Ballerini joked that instead of giving out gift bags at this year's ceremony, they'd be giving out Jelly Roll hugs. He went on to hug Ballerini, TV personality Gayle King, and other country stars in the audience.
And then, Jelly Roll took home three big awards: Video of the Year for "Need a Favor," Male Video of the Year and CMT Performance of the Year.
For each win, he delivered a speech.
In his first speech, he said that CMT gave him an opportunity to perform “Need a Favor” for the first time on live television at last year's awards. He thanked his wife, daughter and fans, noting that his life has changed so much since his first time attending the CMTs in 2023.
In his second speech, Jelly Roll said, "Thank you to CMT, man. I couldn't believe it y'all gave me a chance last year...I came back this year on fire, baby! I'm having one of the greatest nights of my life!"
Jelly Roll then said he wanted to stand on stage tonight and "represent those that are looking for second chances." He addressed people in juvenile detention facilities today, directing his speech to them.
"I'm cheering y'all boys on," he said. "You can be this guy. You can change. You can be this guy. I promise you can, baby!"
In his final speech of the night, Jelly Roll cheered on fellow nominees Cody Johnson and Kelsea Ballerini, thanked his manager, publicist and the rest of his team. Again, he thanked his wife Bunnie XO, saying she "finds beauty in broken things."
Jelly Roll closed out the night with a performance of his song "Halfway to Hell," complete with bursts of flames, a walk through the audience and his powerful, rumbling vocals.
Brittney Spencer and Parker McCollum 'Burn It Down'
Parker McCollum and Britney Spencer performed song "Burn It Down" together towards the top of the show. Among red lights on a smoke-filled stage, the two's harmonies soared and flames blazed behind them.
In front of a screen showing a house ablaze, two sang, "Burn it down 'til its ashes and smoke / Burn it down to the smolderin' coals." The duo's fiery performance was met with explosive applause.
Trisha Yearwood recieves Humanitarian Award, debuts new song
Trisha Yearwood was awarded CMT's new June Carter Cash Humanitarian Award , making history as the first artist to be honored by CMT for her devotion to giving back.
Some of Yearwood's philanthropic endeavors include working with Habitat for Humanity efforts like the Carter Work Project and National Women Build Week .
The "XXX's And OOO's" singer delivered a moving speech as she accepted the award. "June Carter Cash was a force, and she was also married to a force," Yearwood said, referencing Johnny and June Carter Cash's relationship and nodding to her own with fellow country star Garth Brooks.
"My hope is that we can all learn a little bit from June Carter Cash’s legacy, and be a little bit more real, be a little bit more vulnerable, be a little bit less about 'me,' and a little bit more about 'us.'”
Yearwood had another big moment at the night's awards ceremony.
She debuted her brand new tune "Put It In A Song." She gave an earnest, bare-bones performance of the vulnerable song, standing firmly center-stage, backed by two acoustic guitars.
Yearwood sang, "All the pain and all the hurt / When it's too hard just to say the words / I find my pen and pour it on the page / Grab a guitar and just play."
Sam Hunt channels Johnny Cash in song 'Locked Up'
A clean-cut Sam Hunt hit the stage to perform his new song "Locked Up" at the 2024 CMT Music Awards. Wearing a black suit and white dress shirt, Hunt brought some “Folsom Prison Blues” vibes to the CMT stage.
Hunt released "Locked Up," the title track of his new EP, last week. "It was sort of meant to be a callback, a nod, to Johnny Cash's concert at Folsom Prison," he told The Tennessean. "That's what we're going for."
Hunt channeled Cash's performance closely, even including some actors in prison garb watching him perform and cheering along.
Hunt's song, too, draws from personal experience after Hunt spent time in jail in 2021 due to DUI charges . He sang, "The night I got locked up, everything went wrong / The night I got messed up, should've just stayed home."
Little Big Town, Sugarland cover Phil Collins' 'Take Me Home'
Before musical group Little Big Town and duo Sugarland hit the stage together, Kelsea Ballerini announced that the two acts would be touring together this fall. The two groups will kick off the tour in October and end in Nashville with a Dec. 13 show at Bridgestone Arena.
Then, the six performers—Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet, Jimi Westbrook, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush—took the CMT stage and brought the house down with a cover of Phil Collins' 1985 hit "Take Me Home."
Smoke poured off the stage and lights strobed as they hit powerful harmonies, standing together in line. "Take, take me home / Take, take me home," they sang.
Lainey Wilson, Brooks & Dunn and Sammy Hagar perform Toby Keith tribute
Brooks & Dunn, rocker Sammy Hagar and Lainey Wilson hit the stage to honor the late Toby Keith in song. Keith, known for his country song "Should've Been a Cowboy," died in February after battling stomach cancer .
Brooks & Dunn started the tribute with a performance of "Shoulda Been a Cowboy" that had the audience singing along.
Next, Sammy Hagar took the stage wearing a Toby Keith t-shirt. Keith was a dear friend of Hagar's—the two spent a lot of time in Cabo San Lucas singing and partying at Hagar's bar. "It’s hard to get thrown out of your own bar and we managed to do that," he told the crowd.
Hagar performed a hearty cover of Keith's song "I Love This Bar," one he used to sing with Keith in Cabo.
Lainey Wilson finished out the tribute with song "How Do You Like Me Now?," which had the audience singing along again.
Holding red Solo cups in honor of another Keith song, the crowd and performers raised their cups and sang along.
Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens took the mic at the end of the tribute, asking the crowd to chant "Whiskey for my men and beer for my horses." He teared up as he thanked Keith's widow and his children for sharing their dad with the world.

Jelly Roll Once Turned Down Chance to Meet Diddy at Last Minute: 'I Don't Even Know If That's a Picture I Want'
Diddy's homes in Los Angeles and Miami were recently raided by homeland security in connection with a federal sex trafficking case.
Jelly Roll bailed on meeting Diddy after getting bad vibes about the hip-hop mogul, who's facing multiple lawsuits over alleged sexual assault and sex trafficking.
In an interview on the podcast Cancelled with Tana Mongeau alongside his wife Bunnie XO, Jelly Roll revealed he had a chance to greet Diddy when they were both on Jimmy Kimmel Live last October, mere weeks before Cassie's lawsuit accusing him of rape and abuse went public. The 39-year-old Grammy nominee rejected the opportunity at the last minute because he didn't have a good feeling about it.
“I will tell this story, and I'll probably get in trouble for it; not harping on it 'cause it's a hot topic. ... And this is the first time in my career, ever, where they said, ‘Do you want to meet such-and-such?’” he recalled around the 43:00 mark below, as pointed out by Shawn Setaro at HipHopDX . “And I said 'yeah,’ and I started walking that way. And as I was getting down the hallway—this is a true story—I said ‘nah,’ and went and got back in the car. Swear. I don't know what it was. And I made a joke at first, I was like, 'Who don't wanna meet the guy that got 2Pac killed?' And nobody thought that was funny, so I was like, 'Ooh, that was a bomb, maybe I shouldn't go do this anyway.'"
The "Need a Favor" artist continued, “So I was already skeptical, 'cause I thought I had a funny [joke]—I probably wouldn't say that [around him]. And we were walking, I was just like, 'I don’t know.' Very seldom does things rub me in a way where I was like, ‘I don’t even know if that’s a picture I want.’ ... I've ended up in pictures with people I didn't wanna be with, just 'cause motherfuckers are [walking] a carpet around the same time. ... And you're like, 'Yo, I don't really know who this human is, kind of.'"

Last month Diddy's homes in Los Angeles and Miami were raided by homeland security in connection with a federal sex trafficking case. Following the raids, the Bad Boy Records founder released a statement through his attorney denying all wrongdoing.
Diddy was hit with a new lawsuit this week as a woman accused his son King Combs of assaulting her during a yacht party in 2022. Diddy is also a defendant in the suit, with the woman saying the 54-year-old is liable since it was his party. Diddy was accused of aiding and abetting King in the alleged assault.

'American Idol' recap: Jelly Roll cries as he grieves with teen contestant Mia Matthews
"American Idol" Season 22's Top 24 contestants have all made their case for why they should make it into the Top 20, and their fates are now in viewers' hands.
Monday's episode saw a dozen singers leave it all out on stage in Hawaii after spending some time under Jelly Roll 's tutelage. In turn, the Grammy nominee became a fan of the many "Idol" hopefuls, including a teen boy from Alabama who idolizes him: season standout Triston Harper.
"Triston has the voice of a man that's been through a lifetime of pain," Jelly Roll said. "And he's only 15 years old."
The rapper-turned-country-star also had an emotional journey as he found a connection with another one of the season's teen contestants, who brought him to tears during rehearsals. Judges Katy Perry , Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie were not immune as Mia Matthews performed a song dedicated to her late father.
Here are the night's highlights.
What happened last episode? Tori Kelly, Iam Tongi join top 24 contestants in Hawaii
Jelly Roll professes 'hate' for contestant after she makes him cry
Nineteen-year-old Mia Matthews ' story struck a chord with Jelly Roll.
For her performance, Mia paid homage to her dad, who was from Hawaii and died before he could show her his hometown, by singing Holly Dunn's "Daddy's Hands." During rehearsal, the teen managed to bring Jelly Roll to tears.
"I lost my father in 2019. So brave of you to pick that song," Jelly Roll said with tears in his eyes. "It's probably the single hardest experience I ever had."
"Thanks for making me cry. I hate you," he joked. "I love you!" she responded, and he returned the sentiment.
As her mom Tara and sister JC watched in the audience, Mia showcased her vulnerability on stage − and her voice, both powerful and soft at the same time. Her emotion and talent made Perry break out into goosebumps "all over."
Mia held it together through the song until her voice cracked on the last line, endearing her to her audience.
"You sang to someone. It's very hard to carry emotions on stage. Sometimes you want to hold that back because that vulnerability can sometimes throw you off course," Richie told her. "In your case, it gave you the best performance I have ever seen come from you on this show.”
Mackenzie Sol reaches new heights with Nick Jonas cover
Mackenzie Sol took a chance this week with Nick Jonas' 2014 single "Jealous," which showcases the Jonas Brothers singer's impressive range.
His nerves about reaching the falsetto at the end made watching his performance a nail-biter. Mackenzie also put a unique ballad-like spin on the pop hit. But as he seduced the audience with his hip-shaking moves, Mackenzie hit all the right notes and reached new heights in the competition.
"That was your best performance since being on the show," Perry said. "You commanded. This was your show. You gave us moments with your voice and you gave us body. You gave us performance. You gave us hammer pants."
Richie announced, "You brought sexy to 'American Idol.'"
"I could tell when it happened because as soon as you opened your mouth for the first note, what happened? Everybody screamed," the judge added. "Now, if you keep them screaming for another 40 years, that's called a career."
Last week: Here's who made it into the Top 24 contestants during 'Showstoppers'
Triston Harper wins over 'role model' Jelly Roll, who thinks he can win 'American Idol'
Triston Harper was over the moon when he saw who their celebrity mentor would be this week.
"That's my role model," he said in awe after Jelly Roll announced himself.
He looked like he could hardly help himself as he spent one-on-one time with the "Halfway to Hell" singer during rehearsals. The two even spent some time dueting Jelly Roll's "Son of a Sinner," which Triston had sung at his school's talent show.
The high schooler wasn't the only fan, though.
As the country star-in-the-making sang Blake Shelton's "God's Country," he looked perfectly at ease, occasionally flashing a charming smile as he showed off his melodious voice. With a full band and backup singers behind him, the teen looked – and sang – like he was on a headlining tour.
What comes out of his mouth is "straight magic," Richie said.
Jelly Roll was also effusive in his praise. He said, "You are the youngest man with the oldest soul I’ve ever met in my life. You have a swagger that at 15 years old you don’t even know you have.
"You can win this competition, young man."
