Find out what to expect on Nicko Cruises’ new river cruise ship, NickoVision, as it sails its first season on the Danube

European river vessels have to comply with strict length, height and width guidelines to fit into narrow locks and sail under bridges, which makes it a tricky job for lines that want to do something a bit different with their ships.

Nicko Cruises, however, has managed just that with its new flagship NickoVision. In fact, its clever, well-thought-out design makes it hard to believe it carries up to 220 passengers, which is more than many other ships sailing on the Danube .

Although the Nicko name might not sound that familiar, the long-established German line now offers English-speaking sailings aimed at Brits, which are bookable in the UK through cruise specialist Light Blue Travel .

What is the food and drink like on NickoVision?

Seasoned river cruisers will immediately notice the details that make NickoVision decidedly different. Split-level decks and extensive use of glass make the ship feel incredibly light and airy throughout, and create a real sense of space that is most noticeable in the public areas.

Instead of one long lounge with a bar, the room has been divided in two, with the bar situated at the bottom of a curved staircase overlooking the front of the ship, and a lovely outdoor area for sundowners on warm evenings.

A ceiling only covers part of the main dining room, with some of the tables visible from the bar and lounge, and again this makes it feel especially bright and spacious. Notably for a river vessel, there are two additional alternative dining venues, both included in the fare.

Marios Grill restaurant, NickoVision

Cosy, jazz-themed Manhattan has all the atmosphere of an intimate bistro on dry land and again features a two-level design. It’s great for couples who prefer to dine alone as there are lots of tables for two, another rarity on most river ships.

At lunchtime, it offers a lighter buffet option and in the evening serves the same à la carte menu that’s offered in the main dining room.

At the back of the ship is Mario’s Grill, serving burgers and the like at lunch and becoming a steakhouse in the evening.

The vessel has a gym and sauna and there are loungers, deckchairs and a hot tub positioned around the spacious sun deck, which also has a sheltered area for breezy days.

What shore excursions can you do on NickoVision?

The line’s motto is ‘Time to Discover’, reflected in unhurried itineraries that feature full days and overnights in cities such as Vienna and Budapest .

Passengers can join included excursions, which are mostly walking tours, and still have plenty of time to do their own thing.

Additional for-fee excursions are also available, such as a trip on Vienna’s landmark Prater wheel at night and a tuk-tuk tour in Budapest.

NickoVision sails the Danube and fares include flights and transfers, four shore excursions on a week-long sailing, a drinks package covering wine, beer, cocktails and soft drinks, Wi-Fi and tips. No-fly cruises are available.

Poor overall service

Very poor customer service and totally ineffective administration process. We unfortunately had a medical emergency/hospitalisation pre departure. It took weeks to obtain a response which not only lacked empathy but was totally insensitive and inflexible. Trying to obtain a refund took ages and was peppered with serious admin errors. If you decide to use this company, suggest you double check everything and hope you don’t need any assistance.

Dear Ms Watkins, We are very sorry that your aunt has had several operations before the cruise. We wish her a speedy recovery! The trip was to take place on the occasion of her birthday. Have you taken out a travel cancellation insurance? Unfortunately, we are not able to take over the risk insurance function in case of travel cancellation due to our tightly calculated margins. So it is not a lack of customer orientation on the part of nicko cruises that causes us to refuse to postpone or cancel a trip free of charge, but rather our concern for the profitability of our business. Even if you "only" want to postpone to the next year, this unfortunately means a loss of revenue for us in the current year, which is equivalent to a cancellation. This is why travel law grants us compensation in the form of so-called cancellation fees, and why we always recommend travel insurance to our guests. We made your cancellation at the beginning of July. You received the difference between the deposit and the cancellation fee in mid-July. You have booked a package holiday with us which includes several services. The travel conditions were agreed when the contract was concluded, so that the cancellation fees apply in the event of cancellation. Basically, the cancellation scale takes into account the probability of resale, the saved expenses and the possible lower travel price at which the cabin is resold. As your booked cruise does not take place until October, it is quite possible that the ship is fully booked at the start of the cruise. At present, this is not the case. We will be happy to check the occupancy of the ship once again after the start of the cruise. Simply contact us again for this purpose. We hope that you can put yourself in our shoes a little. Unfortunately, for reasons of fairness and equal treatment of all guests, we cannot make any exceptions in the case of rebooking or cancellation fees for more than one year. Not quite. Depending on itinerary you have either all-German or English (bi-lingual) sailings. In practice it might not work as smoothly as it sounds. Also, for English language excursions there might be a minimum number of guests required. For the UK nicko cruises have partnered with an agent/representative. So sailings on the Douro on

As far as I know, 21 May 2020 is an LGBT charter and it will be 100% English language, not bilingual.

If it shows up on an English website it is bilingual. If you get to the German website (you might need to set a VPN to do so) you should find cruises that don't show up in English. They would be German only.

Never mind - I found the answer to my previous query. I really like their Elbe itinerary & price is very reasonable.

I think Nicko might have changed some things on their website, seeing that they now have an exclusive agent for the UK. My guess...

My settings tell nicko I am in Germany. I find it confusing that they have a German website with a mere translation. It is not helpful for ascertaining what is a German cruise and what is not. A quick look at other routes does not give an English language cruise either. So all those that appear on the English language setting are now bilingual?? Nicko, get this sorted! Cannot help you lot with this, I am afraid.

Whether you’re enjoying a quiet moment in the company of a good book in the library, relaxing in a lounger on the sun deck,

or socialising with fellow like-minded passengers in the shade outside, there’s always plenty of room for individuality.

A choice of three included restaurants means those who dislike having to decide in advance when or where to dine can enjoy more spontaneity. Dine al fresco in the panoramic “garden” on the bow, the main restaurant on the middle deck, or on the terrace at the aft of the upper deck.

A spacious wellness and fitness area with sauna and whirlpool offers plenty of scope for relaxation and reinvigoration. Reception and the shore excursion office are all conveniently located near the atrium and of course there’s always the souvenir shop for that last minute gift!

Cabin Information

We have invested a lot of passion and care in the furnishings and amenities you will find in nickoSPIRIT’s 14 m² outside cabins. Windows on the main deck cannot be opened, but on the middle and upper deck, openable French balconies ensure you get the best views. All double beds can be separated into two singles and for storage, we provide a spacious wardrobe as well as convenient shelves in every bathroom. She is a luxurious ship and you’ll discover that the moment you step aboard.

NOTE: nickoSPIRIT has a lift connecting all interior decks, but the use of stairs is required to reach the sun deck.
