There are not one but three Christmas trees in the atrium and 15 in total throughout the ship.

As for the central staircase - that's adorned with a 260-foot garland. That's roughly the length of four cricket pitches!

Wait until you hear about the amount of food on board for the Christmas cruise.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises fleet

Seven seas grandeur, seven seas splendor, seven seas explorer, seven seas voyager, seven seas mariner, seven seas navigator, review of regent seven seas cruises.

Regent Cruises (officially RSSC-Regent Seven Seas Cruises, rssc.com ) is a top-luxury cruise line and trademarked travel brand (fka "Radisson Seven Seas"). RSSC's current owner is NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings) - also the owner of the subsidiaries / sister-brands NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line  and Oceania Cruises . RSSC's headquarters address is "1000 Corporate Drive, Suite 500, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33334 USA".

The RSSC ships are medium-size top luxury passenger ships, with a capacity of up to 700 guests each, all 6-star rated all-suite all-balcony vessels. Regent offers a generous space-to-guest ratio of over 70, and a staff-to-guest ratio of 1/1,6 - some of the best ratios in the industry. Regent cruise ships offer some of the world's best, all-inclusive luxury cruise deals. These are also among the most expensive cruise vessels in the world.

RSSC Regent Seven Seas Cruises logo

All Regent ships are named with the prefix "Seven Seas", connotating all the world's oceans. The name is a most proper one, especially for the Voyager - an ex-USSR's Navy ice-class ship-to-be. Bought as a hull, she is now one of the most recognizable top luxury passenger ships, sailing all the Seven Seas of the World.

The Regent brand serves a clientele of predominantly affluent, middle-aged and older travelers, who expect a quiet and relaxing atmosphere and sophistication on board. The brand line is the epitome for impeccable service of the highest standards. RSSC's all-inclusive vacation packages offer care-free world cruising in an ambiance of luxury, quality, and value.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships

RSSC is well-appreciated also as one of the best cruise brands for families celebrating anniversaries and birthdays. The top-luxury RSSC ships enjoy some of the highest passenger loyalty rates.

On June 6, 2022, NCLH announced an expansion of its fleetwide sustainability program "Sail & Sustain". Extending its animal welfare policy, the shipowner is now fully committed to responsible animal food sourcing practices (regarding pork, chicken, eggs, and seafood) within the global fleet's supply chain. The goal is by the year 2025, fleetwide (NCL, Oceania, Regent) to be sourced only cage-free eggs, crate-free pork, certified sustainable seafood, and chicken purchased from American and Canadian suppliers who meet GAP (Global Animal Partnership) standards.

In late-June 2022, RSSC announced a new Italian menu to be introduced in November 2023 (on the newbuild Grandeur ) and later rolled out fleetwide. The new menu (developed for the Italian restaurant chain Sette Mari) includes items like Bruschetta al pomodoro (tomato), Cavatelli ai frutti di mare (filled pasta), Zucchini alla poverella, Insalata di Panzanella (bread salad) alla Masseria Salamina (17th-century castle in Fasano), Cozze gratinate al forno (stuffed mussels), Branzino in agrodolce (spigola in sweet-and-sour sauce), Pasticcini alla mandorle (Sicilian baked sweets), Chef Nino's Cioppino (fish stew), focaccia con pomodorini (Italian flat bread made with olive oil and flavoured with herbs).

Since January 2023, RSSC's President is Andrea DeMarco, who succeeded Jason Montague. Regent's and Oceania's Presidents both report to NCL's President (currently Harry Sommer).

In 2023 was launched the "Epicurean Perfection" culinary program grouping specially curated "Epicurean Spotlight Voyages". On select sailings, RSSC schedules food & wine-themed shipboard and land-based events like culinary-themed land tours and onboard cooking classes, tastings and food & wine pairings hosted by celebrity chefs and held at the ship's specialty restaurants.

Ship refurbishments

In January 2016, an USD 125 million drydock refurbishment plan was revealed for 3 ships in the RSSC fleet. The aim was to bring the vessels in line with the new Seven Seas Explorer (launched in 2016). The 2-year fleet upgrade plan started with the smallest 490-passenger Seven Seas Navigator (April 2016). Seven Seas Voyager was next (2016), followed by Seven Seas Mariner (2017).

The list of numerous onboard renovations included refurbishing of most public spaces, a complete redesign of all staterooms, ship technology, and equipment upgrades. After the fleet renovation program was completed, RSSC started offering free unlimited Internet and Wi-Fi to all cruise passengers (regardless of cabin categories).

As a top-luxury, all-inclusive cruise line, RSSC provides deals inclusive of beverages (including fine wines and premium spirits) and all-inclusive cruise fares (with roundtrip airfare, shore excursions, gratuities included). The line's newly expanded shore excursions program offers complimentary 3-night land tours in new locations (Cape Town South Africa, Hong Kong, and Beijing China, Angkor Wat Cambodia). The experience features African safaris, China's Great Wall, an elephant camp in Thailand.

On February 11, 2019, RSSC announced its partnership with Vero Water (eco-friendly bottled water supplier) to eliminate all single-use plastic bottles fleetwide. In the period April-June 2019, all Regent cruise liners were outfitted with Vero Water (onboard purification) systems eliminating ~2 million plastic bottles annually. Project's implementation schedule for 2019 included the ships Voyager (April 5), Explorer (April 8), Mariner (June 5) and Navigator (June 18). All RSSC cruise customers are provided complimentary with re-useable Vero Water bottles (Regent-branded, 1 per person) to be used ashore and after the voyage to take home as a souvenir.

In 2019, RSSC introduced fleetwide an innovative plant-based menu items. Beginning October 1 (2019), over 200 plant-based gourmet cuisine specialties are available for ordering at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Naturally, the upgraded shipboard menus target mainly vegetarian and vegan passengers. The new dishes include:

  • Wild Mushroom Tart with Brittle Pie Crust, Red Pepper Coulis and Mushroom Duxelles
  • Falafel Fritters with Harissa Mayo, Mint, Capers, and Cucumber

According to statistics, 9 of 10 plant-based meals are eaten by no-vegans, and luxury travelers are increasingly interested in plant-based fare. RSSC's 200 plant-based food selections are integrated into ship's daily menus, instead of listed on separate menus. The offerings were developed by the company's VP of Food and Beverage - Bernhard Klotz, in cooperation with celebrity chef Christophe Berg.

Note: According to the current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. However, the situation changed in April 2016, after Carnival Corporation negotiated with the Cuban government for allowing ships with Cuban-born passengers, as such US citizens are allowed to visit the country on USA-Cuba charter flights. The Carnival-fathom line started Miami to Cuba cruises in May 2016.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-min ling JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought charter flights only.

Cool Cruiser

We are very excited to be taking our first Regent cruise this Christmas on the Navigator.

Can anyone tell me what special things they do for Christmas and New Years eve?

Many thanks

There is a New Years eve party. Don't know about Christmas proper. Was on just before and just after. Very decorated.

Regent does a great job with music, decorations and festivity. But as always, you can do as much or as little as you choose.

On the Voyager for Christmas 2017, the CD Ray did a carol service on Christmas Eve. If I recall, a few readings and singing with some of the production crew. We are not religious, but thought it very nice, though not well attended. There was also a Christmas themed show one evening that Ray put together. Unfortunately, we were not on over New Year's. The ship was tastefully decorated, not over the top. Enjoy your cruise.

We were on Explorer over Christmas one year and were not blown away.

We haven't cruised on Christmas or New Years (always wanted too), but reading all the older post it sounds pretty good.  You should look up some of the older post and reviews that talk about this.

Thanks for the replies so far.

We are not over the top Christmas people so I'm not too worried as long as we have good food and festive decor.

Hopefully they will put on a good party for new years eve.

We have not experienced a Holiday Cruise on Navigator but have thoroughly enjoyed Christmas & New Year celebrations on other ships in the Regent fleet.

Hope you have a fabulous and festive time on Navigator in French Polynesia   😎

Although we love the New Year’s party on Regent ships, be prepared for a lot of large families and children (with no children’s club onboard at that time of the year).  Just want people to know this in advance so that there are no surprises.

Must say that French Polynesia is a wonderful place to celebrate anything.  Enjoy everyone moment!

TC2-  "large families and children" not always the case.  Probably depends on the itinerary.  A couple of years ago we were on the Navigator from Cape Town to Miami over Christmas/New Years.  There was just one well-behaved 9-yr-old girl on board.  Was fun when Santa showed up with a gift for her.

````````````
From what I have read in the past, this is extremely unusual. Our one Christmas/New Year’s cruise was from Singapore to Sydney.  The20+ children were wonderful during the first few days of the cruise and then became a “gang” that hung out on stairs and other places.  We do not blame the children but rather blame the parents for taking them on a cruise that was mostly designed for adults.
OTOH, the Caribbean is a perfect place for families.  Not many Regent regulars sail at this time of the year.
This has not been our experience on our Regent cruises over the holiday season, so I would agree with @Kwaj girl  that this is not always the case.
One of our Christmas/New Year cruises was 2016/2017 on Voyager, ending in Sydney ....... so perhaps your experience was unusual in your unfortunate encounters with so many large families and gangs of children.
This is absolutely not true......and , what exactly, is a "Regent regular"? The tone is unsettling.
4 hours ago, fizzy said: This is absolutely not true......and , what exactly, is a "Regent regular"? The tone is unsettling.
It is true in our experience. People like to disagree when I say that Alaska cruises are different and do not have as many “Regent Regulars” (think that you do know the meaning of “regular”).  While not on Regent at the moment, the people on this ship - a ship that holds 900 people - there are 720 people new to the cruise line.  According to “regulars” onboard, this is typical - just as it is with Regent.
My comments on this subject are for the TS rather than repeat Regent customers that have experienced full ships, not full ships, lots of families, few families, 100+ kids and only 1 child on the ship.  These are all true experiences and I believe that people new to Regent should be aware of.
In terms of making “sweeping generalizations” (as mentioned in someone else’s post), it is a generalization, however, if you research the facts, my comments are quite accurate. Of course I am not talking about entire islands - only the areas where tourists from ships (and many mega ships) hang out.
There are many places with high crime (Barcelona has been mentioned but, in our experience, Rio is much worse).  Warnings can be taken or ignored - it is up to the person reading the post.
Haha
We don,t find regular Radisson/ Regent passengers to be elitist snobs.
17 minutes ago, fizzy said: We don,t find regular Radisson/ Regent passengers to be elitist snobs.
No one said we/they are.  Not sure what in the world you are referring to!  Holiday/summer cruises are different because the majority of passengers are new to Regent (just as the majority of passengers on Crystal are new to Crystal).  There are also more children on these cruises.  These are just the facts of some (not all) summer/holiday cruises.
I basically post for newbies - to give them a realistic view of Regent.  A few years ago, a couple was celebrating their 50th anniversary on a Regent ship during the summer (Alaska) and the ship was full of children that were dancing and rolling around the dance floor at 11:00 p.m.  The couple was most unhappy as they just wanted to enjoy the music and a few slow dances.  Had they read CC first, they would have either adjusted their expectations or decided to cruise on a different cruise line.
Thanks for the comments.
I have to say although this will be our first Regent cruise we have done holiday cruises on other lines and I agree they can be a very different demographic to regular cruises.
We had 3 noisy teenagers in a cabin next door to us on an Azamara Christmas cruise some years back, fortunately we were able to change cabins early on. Last year we did a Christmas and New year again on Azamara and there were not many kids at all. On Celebrity we found there were large extended family groups who by day 3 had started to fall out with each other so I guess its the luck of the draw.
Its sad how just a small number of people can spoil things for others by their inconsiderate behaviour.
Regent warns passengers about crime when they get off of the ship in port.  They even recommend taking off your wedding rings.  It is the kind of crime where they hurt you - not just pick pocketing as there is in Barcelona.  Guess I need another article to back this up even though visitors to Rio know that crime is an issue, the World Cup Organization knows that crime is an issue as does the Olympic organizers.
This article is from last year   https://riotimesonline.com/brazil-news/rio-politics/rio-crime-surges-to-near-30-year-highs/
And this was updated this month   https://www.numbeo.com/crime/in/Rio-De-Janeiro
I have posted several times on this board about our affinity for Holiday cruises.  We have done several: Caribbean, Sydney to Singapore, Amazon, Panama, Capetown to Capetown and I am sure a few others.
We thoroughly enjoy the different Holiday festivities onboard.   The ships are decorated with beautiful gingerbread houses and Christmas trees and lots of festive decor.  They are magical.  There are special entertainment events with Holiday themes throughout the cruise.  The dining menus certainly recognize the many different celebrations throughout the season and there are, I am sure, services to be attended for different faiths.
The Entertainment staff do an over the top effort on New Years with a show, singing and dancing in public areas, food, champagne and I am sure anything your heart’s desire.  We really enjoyed the crew partying along with the passengers last year on the Explorer. A wonderful dance party with music, drinks, food and dancing well into the wee hours.
I do do agree that there are more families on Caribbean cruises, so they pose a bit of a different dynamic.  But for your cruise, and ours, there will be a wonderful celebration of the Holidays.  As with anything in life, it will be whatever you put into it!
Thanks
 I will support Travelcat completely on this. When we got off the ship in Rio, they already had it "figured out".  They said they had to have another car for our luggage.  I said "No, we will take the luggage on our lap".  LOL, that put a wrench in their plans.  Beware.
JMARINER
Best New year party  ever was on Mariner in Acapulco in 2005. Ship left dock  at 11:00 pm and moved to middle of Acapulco bay. Then at close to mid- night Captain (Jean Marie Guillou) spun the ship continuously so we could see the fireworks launched from the 8-10 bay-side hotels that encircled the bay. Great Deck Party with everyone in Formals and Tuxes and weather was only about 75ish. For those who remember them; Holly and Marty Gast were the duo on stage.
Aside, about Brazil; It is the only place we have ever been physically assaulted in an attempted robbery.  It was in broad daylight on a busy business street.
Regent Seven Seas Customer Review
Robin Bushong has been a long-time valued client with Debbie for over 8 years. Below are Robin’s Regent Seven Seas cruise ships. Explorer review from her Christmas cruise roundtrip to Miami.
Regent Seven Seas Cruise Ships Explorer Review
Cruising…when your ship is your destination.
Regent Seven Seas Cruise Ships
The stunning new 750-guest Seven Seas Explorer – is anchored in the harbor of Cayo Levantado, Dominican Republic (Photo by Robyn Bushong.)
How do we define the word DESTINATION?  One definition is “the place to which a person travels.” Another definition is “an attraction or event that people are willing to travel a long distance to get to – either because it is very good or distinctive or located in a popular and interesting place.” Another definition – as provided by the travel industry – is “a hotel or resort that guests seek out for its features and amenities.”
Having returned recently from one of the best cruises – ever… I can honestly say that the new 750-guest Regent Seven Seas Explorer  is truly a “destination” unto itself!
Ed Hill and I booked Regent Seven Seas Cruise Ships over a year and a half ago. We chose the ship – because it’s brand new (launched in July 2016.)  We chose the itinerary – round trip Miami – because it was an easy  2 1/2 hour, non-stop flight – Houston/Miami and we were also eager to experience and enjoy a new ship all “decked out” for the holidays.  Many of the guests were multi-generational families traveling together for the holidays  – such as grandparents, parents, children, aunts/uncles, cousins, and family friends – with children ranging in age from toddlers through teens. Many of the guests were from Europe (Spain, France, and Great Britain), as well as from other countries throughout the world. Needless to say, these Regent Seven Seas Cruise Ships sailed at 100% capacity.
It’s important to note that all Regent Sevens Seas’ ships (and there are four:  Seven Seas Mariner, Seven Seas Navigator, Seven Seas Voyager, and now the new  Seven Seas Explorer) are all-inclusive. “All-inclusive” aboard a Regent Seven Seas vessel means that beverages (to include wines and spirits, specialty coffees, beer, and soft drinks), in-suite minibar stocked with your favorite beverages, all specialty dining venues, shore excursions, gratuities, port charges/taxes, round trip economy air,  ground transportation to/from airport and the ship for air-sea guests, and more…are ALL INCLUSIVE in your fare. Depending on the stateroom category, pre-cruise, one-night hotel accommodation in your city of embarkation, and complimentary onboard WiFi – may also be inclusive.)
Our 10-day itinerary showcased such historic and popular ports as Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Gustavia, St. Barts; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Cayo Leventado, Dominican Republic; and  Nassau, Bahamas, plus two sea days.
After the mandatory/compulsory Life Boat Drill, Ed and I returned to our stateroom for a glass of champagne and a toast to the wonderful opportunity to enjoy the next ten days together on this beautiful ship.
We very quickly got our bearings and set our priorities as to what we wanted/hoped to accomplish on this 10-day holiday cruise getaway. Ed’s goal: read and rest and walk around in each port. My goal: work out in the gym every single day because it’s complete with equipment thanks to services similar to exercise equipment rental , get a minimum 3 miles in every day on Deck 12 (weather permitting); eat healthy (well… with maybe just a little “extra” champagne to celebrate the season!), read and rest. We both needed “down” time and to have the opportunity for some much-needed R&R.  Not a doubt in my mind:  This ship was to be my “destination” for the next 10 days!  Let the cruise begin!
We enjoyed a lovely and spacious accommodation, with an equally spacious balcony. We chose a stateroom in the center of Deck 9 – all the way forward. There were just three staterooms on Deck 9 far forward, and our balcony was private, as the balconies for the accommodations on either side of ours opened either to the port side or starboard side. It was a perfect location.
Regent Seven Seas Cruise Ships
Ed and I enjoyed many beautiful vistas each day from our spacious balcony. (Photo by Robyn Bushong.)
Before the cruise, we  made dinner reservations in each of the specialty dining rooms (Asian – Pacific Rim,  Surf/Turf – Prime 7, French – Chartreuse, and Italian –Sette Mari.) Note: Sette Mari does not require reservations.) By far, our favorite specialty dining restaurant for dinner was Pacific Rim; Prime 7 – our favorite for lunch. Our first evening’s reservation was in Chartreuse. Described as a venue featuring a “classic French menu with a modern twist,” the food and ambiance were very nice.
And as we walked through the ship after dinner, you could feel the excitement building for Christmas and Hanukkah! The decorations were stunning – from a beautifully decorated giant Christmas tree -prominently positioned at the base of the dramatic circular staircase between decks 4 and 5 – to fresh poinsettias gracing each public area throughout the ship. For a beautiful and unique staircase, you can rely on metal staircases .  The UK.
As many of us know, cruising has become one of THE most popular ways to vacation – and it’s a vacation that can appeal to – and appease – every member of your family/travel group.  When the ship promotes “there’s something for everyone at every age to enjoy on board”, or “there’s so many programs, activities, classes and entertainment options on board, you can’t possibly do it all in one day” – it’s true.  And that doesn’t count the diverse and fun shore excursion options from which you can choose to sign up for each port!  On our ship, daily activities ranged from Ballroom Basics, a Blackjack Tournament, and Boot Camp, to informative Smithsonian Lectures, highlighting each upcoming port of call, “Top Toss for Youngsters” and Bingo! (played when at sea.)
For us – in keeping with the “our ship is our destination” theme – we chose no shore excursions and we opted to watch movies in our stateroom versus going to the evening’s live entertainment in the Constellation Theatre. (However, after hearing so many positive and enthusiastic comments from our “neighbors” next door and from “new” friends we met when we first came on board about the excellent and fun shows each evening, we realized we missed some great entertainment.)
Even though we didn’t take advantage of the evening’s shows, we did take full advantage of the beautiful Canyon Ranch Spa – and its exceptional services and treatments. Plus, I thoroughly enjoyed working out in the very large gym on Deck 6-Aft – complete with three fully-equipped rooms (including a special area for yoga/pilates and/or spin classes) that all overlooked the sparkling blue ocean water below.
For cultural enrichment – specifically “culinary” enrichment – we signed up in advance for two of their awesome culinary classes: Gone Fishing and At Home Italian. First, we need to share with you the exceptional Culinary Arts Kitchen – which truly provides its 24 participants with “all the ingredients to expand your culinary skills in a welcoming environment reminiscent of the most prestigious cooking schools in the world in both layout and design.”  In addition, the “culinary workstations are fully equipped with top-of-the-line induction cooktops, stainless steel sinks, and a comprehensive collection of cooking essentials.” And, indeed “the curriculum will appeal to a wide range of tastes and cater to all levels of aptitude – from beginner to experienced chef instructors.”  Our instructor, Annie Copps, was not only a highly-trained chef and excellent instructor, but she had considerable experience as a chef preparing dishes in front of a television camera, as a radio talk show host, as an author, and as a food columnist for various newspapers and magazines. Ed and I both like to cook, grill, and bake and we thoroughly enjoyed each of the almost 2-hour classes that we took.
Regent Seven Seas Cruise Ships
Culinary Arts Instructor, Annie Copps, with Ed Hill and me during our “Gone Fishing” culinary class. So much fun and we learned a lot!
Our first class was “Gone Fishing.” We learned how to saute, shallow poach, deep poach, and pan fry fish and shrimp; make ceviche, and pan-fry scallops to a “golden brown.” Having a glass of white wine during our class only enhanced the fun and conversation all of us were enjoying.
Regent Seven Seas Cruise Ships
Ed is pictured here searing scallops. (Photo by Robyn Bushong.)
A couple of days later, we took the “At Home Italian” class. We learned how to make pasta – from scratch! And for someone who was overwhelmed with just the thought of making pasta – it was easy! We learned how to buy, store, and cook with extra virgin olive oil and we also learned that you should not add olive oil to your cooked pasta if you plan to add a sauce – as the sauce will not stick to the pasta if olive oil has been added. Other class options ranged from “Everything French”  and “Light My Fire” to “Brunch Favorites” and “Healthy Greek.”   These culinary classes are highly recommended.
As mentioned before, we had a port every day, except for two sea days – one on each end of the cruise. In each port, except San Juan, Ed and I debarked and just strolled around the town for an hour or so – just to say we’d “been there.” Gustavia, St. Barts was by far the classiest, prettiest, and most upscale Caribbean port we visited. The variety of activities and local vendors on the beach in Cayo Levantado (Dominican Republic) was the most interesting; while the port of Nassau, Bahamas was the most fun. We had lunch/drinks at a packed open-air bar/restaurant near the cruise terminal.  It was great fun sitting at the bar people-watching and listening to live music for a couple of hours.
Of course, the onboard highlight for us was the Christmas celebration. Beginning Christmas Eve afternoon, activities included the “popcorn” movie “It’s A Wonderful Life,” followed by Christmas Caroling in the Atrium/Deck 4 before dinner. A Hanukkah service, a special late-evening Christmas Carol concert, and a Midnight non-denominational Christmas service rounded out the activities and programs for Christmas Eve.
Caroling on Christmas Eve
Caroling on Christmas Eve was a delight – as both staff members and guests participated. (Photo by Robyn Bushong.)
Christmas Day began with a delightful “Christmas Caviar & Champagne Breakfast.” Another “popcorn” Christmas movie (“Elf”) was followed with afternoon tea featuring Christmas caroling and Christmas Teatime Trivia. Next, a late-afternoon non-denominational Christmas Day service and Lighting of the Menorah concluded the afternoon’s program. At 6 pm, Santa’s “extra special visit” that included bringing gifts for all youngsters (under 12) was especially fun and festive. And for those who still wanted to celebrate, a late-evening “Christmas Karaoke” capped the ship’s holiday entertainment options in the Explorer Lounge.
Christmas festivities
Children of all ages enjoyed the special Christmas festivities. (Photo by Robyn Bushong.)
Monday, December 26th was a much-needed day at sea and a chance for everyone to wind down from a festive and busy weekend.
Tuesday was our last port of call – Nassau, Bahamas – and the realization that on Wednesday morning we would say our farewells to everyone we’d met on board.  As we stood on our balcony for the last time Tuesday evening, we reminded each other of the stunning sunrises and sunsets and the beautiful “views” we experienced as we sailed into and out of a port almost every day. Each view as stated on the the mcleodbrock.com site was comprised of luxurious yachts and sailboats anchored in calm, sparkling, clear aquamarine waters – all with a backdrop of white sand beaches dotted with brightly painted homes and buildings along the shoreline. Each morning we experienced a picture-perfect, postcard vista as we sailed into a new port and watched the sun sparkle off the clear blue ocean waters. The best way to experience this view every day is to get Yacht crew jobs from here and enjoy the view every day.
Large and small yachts and boats dotted the harbor of each port we visited. (Photo by Robyn Bushong.)
Wednesday morning, following an early breakfast, we debarked and took a short 20-minute motor coach ride to the airport followed by an easy 2 1/2 hour United flight from Miami to IAH.  We were met at the airport and enjoyed a quick one-hour and 10-minute -drive to Galveston.  We are happy to be back on Galveston Island and home – rested and relaxed.
On board the Regent Seven Seas Cruise Ships is truly was an incredibly pleasant 10-day cruise. With the theme Cruising… When Your Ship Is Your “Destination”…. this was – for us – the perfect ship and the perfect itinerary!
The 7 best cruise ship suites — picked by someone who has seen them all
O ne of the biggest stories in the cruise world over the past couple of decades has been the arrival of a new generation of superlarge, superswanky cruise ship suites that are chock-full of every sort of upscale feature and amenity you could imagine. They are sights to behold.
Some of the biggest of these cruise ship suites measure 2,000 square feet or more — approaching the size of the typical American home. A handful go far beyond that.
For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
I haven't stayed in all of these new cruise ship suites. But over more than 25 years of writing about cruise ships, I've toured pretty much all of them. I can't think of any major cruise ship suite that I've missed other than Disney Cruise Line's new Tower Suite on Disney Wish, which I hope to get to soon.
A few of these swanky digs really stood out, and I'll profile them below in my personal list of best cruise suites.
In some cases, these are one-of-a-kind suites found on only a single vessel. In other cases, they are suites with similar sisters on multiple ships.
To be clear, this is by no means an exhaustive list. Disney fans will no doubt admonish me for not including the supersized suites on some Disney Cruise Line ships, such as the art deco-influenced Roy O. Disney Suite on Disney Fantasy. I've been in these suites, and they are certainly impressive. But I wasn't as wowed by them as I was by the suites below. And I have to cut off my list somewhere.
Luxury lines Silversea Cruises and Seabourn also offer quite a few wonderful suites on their ships, and it's worth noting that some of the biggest suites at sea are those found on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Jewel-class vessels.
Below, you'll find my picks for the seven best suites at sea.
Regent Suite
Ship: Seven Seas Splendor (Regent Seven Seas Cruises)
Every time I think of this suite, I think of that famous scene in "Dr. Zhivago" where Comrade Kaprugina dresses down the good doctor on the size of his mansion. "There was living space for 13 families in this one house!" she scolds.
You might not be able to jam 13 families into Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' Regent Suite, but in a pinch, you probably could come close. It sprawls over an astounding 4,443 square feet — nearly twice the size of the average American home. Its opulence is like nothing you'll find anywhere else at sea (except in similar suites found on Regent's Seven Seas Explorer and the just-unveiled Seven Seas Grandeur).
Located at the front of Seven Seas Splendor , the Regent Suite is so big it stretches all the way from one side of the ship to the other, offering views in three directions. It has two massive bedroom complexes — and they really are complexes, with seemingly endless space. It also has a living room, a separate dining area and perhaps the most spectacular balcony at sea.
Related: 7 reasons you should splurge on a suite for your next cruise
Among the over-the-top things you'll find in the Regent Suite is a bed with a handmade mattress that Regent executives claim cost more than $200,000. It was handcrafted by four artisans at the renowned Hastens workshop in Koping, Sweden, using horsetail hair and flax, along with cotton and wool batting.
The Regent Suite also has a ridiculously large master bathroom, complete with its own sauna and steam room. It's big enough that it can double as a personal spa treatment room. To that end, the Regent Suite — get this — comes with its own spa therapist on call. Unlimited spa treatments are included in the cost of the suite.
Other perks of staying in the Regent Suite include first-class domestic flights to reach the ship; a personal car, driver and guide in every port; and a dedicated butler to help make arrangements on board.
The only downside to a stay? The cost. Regent charges $11,000 a day for the privilege.
Royal Loft Suite
Ship: Quantum of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)
At 1,640 square feet, the Royal Loft Suite on Royal Caribbean 's Quantum of the Seas isn't nearly as big as the Regent Suite on Seven Seas Splendor. But it makes my list of the best cruise ship suites because it offers something the latter doesn't: views across the ship's wake through a soaring, two-deck-high glass wall.
That's right, the Royal Loft Suite on Quantum of the Seas sprawls over two decks and has a main room that is two stories high — a lavish use of space that is rare in the cruise world.
Royal Caribbean offers a Royal Loft Suite on each of its Oasis Class and Quantum Class ships, but there are some design differences among them.
My favorite of all the Royal Loft Suites is the one on Quantum of the Seas, the first vessel in Royal Caribbean's Quantum Class series. Sleeping up to six, it offers a stylish, two-deck-high living and dining space facing the complex's giant window wall, complete with such modernist touches as an Eames chair (which, being a minimalist, I adore). Among its highlights are a dry bar and a sofa that converts into a double bed.
Related: 5 reasons to turn down a cruise ship cabin upgrade
The first floor of the Royal Loft Suite is also home to a media room with a sofa that converts into a queen bed. It's a perfect hideaway for the kids, should you be traveling with a family.
Upstairs, the main bedroom is open-walled, so you can see across the living area to the sea. It is accessed via a bridge-like walkway, which I love. It's like crossing a drawbridge into your own private castle at sea.
Rounding out the complex is a spacious, 415-square-foot private balcony that has its own private whirlpool — another great place from which to look out over the water.
Balmoral Suite
Ship: Queen Mary 2 (Cunard Line)
Royal Caribbean wasn't the first cruise line to go the double-decker route when designing over-the-top cruise ship suites. A decade before the debut of Quantum of the Seas, Cunard Line wowed cruise fans with the unveiling of this two-deck-high Grand Duplex suite and a sister suite, the Sandringham, on its iconic Queen Mary 2.
Named after a castle in Scotland owned by the British royal family, the Balmoral Suite is fit for a queen with a stunning 2,249 square feet of living space.
Like Royal Caribbean's Royal Loft suites, both the Balmoral Suite and the Sandringham Suite have a sprawling living room and dining area on their ground floors and a spacious master bedroom complex on their second levels.
One thing I particularly love about the Grand Duplex suites is that their master bedrooms are reached via dramatic, curving staircases.
Another allure of the Grand Duplex suites is that they come with access to Queen Mary 2's exclusive Queens Grill restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only open to passengers staying in the very top accommodations on the ship, this is a much more intimate, elegant and private eatery than the main Britannia restaurant where most passengers dine.
Movie buffs may recognize the restaurant, as it was heavily highlighted in the Meryl Streep movie "Let Them All Talk," which was set on Queen Mary 2 .
Owner's suite
Ship: Viking Star (Viking)
Many cruise ships have giant suites that are given the name "owner's suite." But few live up to the phrase like this one.
The owner's suite on Viking Star — Viking 's first oceangoing ship — was specifically designed to be used by Viking founder and owner Torstein Hagen when he travels on the ship, and it's full of little quirks that reflect his personal tastes.
Among them: Hagen's personal mementos, including pictures of his family, are sprinkled throughout the suite. A selection of books from Hagen's personal collection fills a bookshelf.
The Norwegian-born Hagen also had the suite built with its own private sauna with a glass wall facing the sea, something he wanted for personal use.
In all, the suite — and similar suites that were built onto more recently unveiled Viking ocean ships — sprawls over an impressive 1,448 square feet.
Located at the top of the vessel, it has a bedroom with a large bathroom complex (including that sauna), a separate living room and a dining area that seats six people.
In addition, in another twist that speaks to its real use as an owner's suite, it has its own boardroom with a long table that seats 12 people that Hagen uses for meetings and catered dinner parties. There's an adjacent pantry that can be used by staff serving room service or catering hosted events.
Among other personal touches related to Hagen are wine and music collections that he curated for the rooms.
Similar Owner's Suites can be found on other Viking ocean ships, too, all used from time to time by Hagen and his family.
Reflection Suite
Ship: Celebrity Reflection (Celebrity Cruises)
Many Celebrity Cruises ships have spacious and alluring suites. But the newest of the line's five Solstice Class vessels, Celebrity Reflection, has my favorite of them all: the Reflection Suite.
Unveiled in 2012, the Reflection Suite was the brand's first two-bedroom suite, and it measures a none-too-shabby 1,636 square feet, not including a 194-square-foot balcony.
Located in a panoramic corner spot on the ship, it features a glass-walled living and dining area with a dining table that can seat 10 people (just in case you want to hold a dinner party during your cruise).
Related: TPG's ultimate guide to picking a cruise line
But what really earns it a place on our list of the best cruise ship suites is the Reflection Suite's stunning, glass-walled master bathroom. Dubbed a "sea-view bathroom," it is just that — a bathroom with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer incredible sea views. The most-talked-about highlight of the space: a glass-enclosed rain shower that juts out over the edge of the ship.
Just be careful if you use the shower as the ship pulls into port: You might end up putting on a show. (The walls are made of "smart glass," so you can change them from transparent to translucent.) That said, we can't think of another bathroom on a cruise ship with such amazing views.
Ship: Riviera (Oceania Cruises)
The owner's suites on Oceania Cruises ' Riviera — there are three of them — rival anything you can find at a resort on land when it comes to elegance and style.
So do three more owner's suites that you can find on Riviera's slightly older sister ship, Marina.
All six of the suites were decorated using Ralph Lauren furnishings by designer Susan Bednar Long, and they have a wonderful flow and consistency in style.
The mahogany beds that you'll find in the master bedrooms are upholstered in steel-blue mohair — a striking touch — and are flanked by walls covered in cashmere. A few steps away, a marble-clad master bathroom offers more luxurious Ralph Lauren design touches.
Measuring around 2,000 square feet, the owner's suites also have spacious living rooms and a dramatic entryway with a bar on one side and a grand piano on the other.
The suites offer lots of outdoor living space with wrap-around balconies that are home to hot tubs and flat-screen TVs. These balconies overlook the back of the ship, offering great views.
Among the extra touches, a stay in one of the suites comes with butler service, free laundry service of up to three bags per sailing, priority ship embarkation with priority luggage delivery and access to an exclusive executive lounge staffed by a dedicated concierge.
Ultimate Family Suite
Ship: Symphony of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)
Yes, I'm putting a second Royal Caribbean suite on my short list of the seven best cruise suites. The line is that amazing when it comes to suites. Indeed, if I had to pick just one cruise line for best suites, it'd be Royal Caribbean.
The Ultimate Family Suite on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, which debuted in 2018, really is the ultimate family suite. I can't think of a better suite anywhere in the world, at sea or on land, for families with kids, particularly small kids.
Like two other Ultimate Family suites that have debuted more recently on Spectrum of the Seas (a ship devoted to the Asia cruise market) and Wonder of the Seas, Symphony's is like a kiddie fun zone that happens to have beds where you can spend the night.
Related: 12 tips for surviving a luxury cruise with kids
Measuring a palatial 1,346 square feet, the Ultimate Family Suite on Symphony of the Seas spans two decks that are loaded with such kid-friendly attractions as an air hockey table, a building block wall, table tennis on the balcony and a vertical climbing maze.
There's also a crawl-through nook connecting the main bedroom for adults and a second kiddie bedroom, plus — surely the coolest feature of all — a slide that descends from the second floor of the complex to the first floor. (Don't worry, there are stairs, too, for those who want to move between floors the traditional way.)
In addition, the complex has its very own private cinema room with an 85-inch 4K TV that streams movies, a popcorn machine and the latest gaming consoles.
Designed with even the largest families in mind — it can hold up to eight people! — the suite also features one of the most jaw-dropping balcony views on the entire ship. And, like all high-end suites on Royal Caribbean ships, it comes with a Royal Genie — a personal butler assigned to cater to your every need.
Luxury Goes Exploring® Blog
A holiday to remember: a christmas cruise aboard regent, feel holiday magic with your regent family.
Last Christmas I had the incredible experience of sailing aboard Seven Seas Mariner® in South America with my Regent Family. After an incredibly busy December at the office, there was no better way to start my holiday vacation than crossing the gangway and being welcomed aboard with a glass of champagne.
Under the glimmering holiday lights and boughs of holly, I hugged so many of my dear colleagues that it felt like I had come home for Christmas. My heart was full—and the celebrations had only just begun.
What’s it like on board a Regent Cruise?
If you’ve sailed aboard our ships, you know there’s an air of sophistication that comes with the Regent Experience. But when we start nearing those festive dates on the calendar, the crew does an amazing job at elevating the décor, the menus and the programming.
As early as Halloween, you can anticipate costume contests and indulgent treats. Thanksgiving is a truly elegant epicurean affair, with our Chefs really showing off their skills—even our baristas get in the spirit by making pumpkin-spiced lattes. During Hanukah, you may light candles and find latkes, gefilte fish and even matzo ball soup on the menu. Throughout December, our bakers create splendid gingerbread villages, and our bartenders gladly serve eggnog. Around the ship, you may run into Christmas carolers and even Santa himself. And when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, you can’t help but be overwhelmed with joy to be celebrating another year in the company of such extraordinary friends and family.
On my sailing, General Manager Nickie Sheils and herteam really outdid themselves, not only with the decorations, but truly bringing to life the joy and merriment that makes this season the most wonderful time of the year.
Where to Vacation During the Holidays?
I chose Rio to Miami as I had never been to South America, and the one-way flight from Miami was easy. I also wanted to spend time with some of our World Cruisers who joined Seven Seas Mariner in the weeks leading up to the start of the World Cruise. Luckily, this year Regent has Journeys of Joy , a dozen holiday sailings to choose from.
Across all six of our ships , you can choose to celebrate Halloween to New Year’s Day, and everything in between, while sailing to Asia’s less-traveled villages or immersing yourself in the natural wonders of South America . Choose to experience a thrilling safari in Africa or plunge into the Great Barrier Reef while in Australia . Or, simply relax under the Caribbean sun.
Seven Seas Society Says…
During my holiday cruise, I was able to connect with Seven Seas Society members over a cup of coffee, a cocktail and even some special dinners. I loved hearing their stories — not just those recounting their past Regent cruises, but also getting to know them on a personal level. From tales of first loves, favorite foods, career highlights and the new adventures they’re looking forward to, I treasured each anecdote and left with the feeling that I had gained yet another family member.
I’ve kept in touch with so many of our guests, and among their lovely notes, quite a few have shared how much they enjoy cruising with us throughout the holidays. Here are a few of my favorite posts:
Regent Seven Seas Grandeur is the third of three sister...
The luxury pedigree that Regent Seven Seas welcomed with Seven Seas Explorer in 2016 continued with sister ship Seven Seas Splendor in 2020, but the third and final sister Seven Seas Grandeur offers up the best of class.
The ship’s features include the first Fabergé egg with a permanent home at sea. The blue-pearl-and-diamond sculpture titled “Journey in Jewels” is a small but commanding centerpiece rotating within its display case in the atrium for travelers to enjoy as soon as they step on board.
The egg is revealed as seven branches break away like waves that represent the Seven Seas. The ship’s godmother is Sarah Fabergé, the great-granddaughter of Peter Carl Fabergé.
It’s part of a 1,600-piece art collection that includes classic black-and-white photos from global destinations adorning the hallways between cabins to the steakhouse’s original Picassos. Travelers could spend a good afternoon wandering hallways and public spaces, akin to visiting a museum. A new app for the line also offers a digital art tour, like a personal guide.
“With each new ship, our team works tirelessly to identify and source the most impressive array of art pieces, building a collection that would be enviable by most modern-day museums, to ensure our guests’ time onboard is as enriching and thought-provoking as their time on land,” said Regent Seven Seas Cruises President Andrea DeMarco.
All three ships in the Explorer class are about 55,500 gross tons, with Grandeur sporting a 744-guest capacity among its all-suite offerings. The line has three older ships and just had two larger vessels ordered by parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, but they are not due until 2026 and 2029.
Until then, the three sister ships continue the line’s most refined take on their global, all-inclusive itineraries, with both Splendor and Grandeur set to return to Miami for the 2024-25 winter Caribbean season.
The line has given all three Explorer-class ships a succession of superlative monikers. Seven Seas Grandeur was dubbed with “A Heritage of Perfection,” following Seven Seas Explorer’s “the most luxurious cruise ship ever” and Seven Seas Splendor’s “the ship that perfects luxury.”
With 548 crew, Grandeur boasts a 1:1.36 crew-to-passenger ratio similar to its two sisters, so needs among travelers are attended to promptly.
The ship’s interior spaces are crafted by Miami-based Studio DADO, which has put its mark on sister lines Oceania Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.
The Compass Rose restaurant on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur was designed by Miami-based Studio DADO. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)
That includes new takes on main dining venue Compass Rose, which DADO founding partner Yohandel Ruiz called “a feast for the eyes.”
It’s filled with fantastical tree-like arches right out of Alice in Wonderland with a cascading waterfall sculpture. At night, thousands of individually placed crystal-faceted leaves encrusted on pillars and branches illuminate the space.
The ship has five signature restaurants on board, including steakhouse Prime 7, Italian option Sette Mari at La Veranda, French offering Chartreuse and the latest version of Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, this time bringing a delicate bronze-and-glass bonsai cherry blossom tree sculpture as the centerpiece at the entrance. It’s a welcome and fitting addition to the dragon and prayer wheel sculptures on its two sister ships.
This bronze-and-glass bonsai cherry blossom tree sculpture welcomes diners into the Pacific Rim restaurant on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur, the third of three sister ships for the luxury cruise line Regent Seven Seas Cruises that debuted in late 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)
The ship has 15 suite categories, all with their own balconies. The pinnacle of sailing options is the 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite at $11,000 a night. It features a $200,000 Hästens Vividus custom handmade mattress, an in-suite spa retreat with a personal sauna and steam room and 270-degree views from the ship’s bow from a 1,292-square-foot wraparound veranda. Those passengers get their own butler and personal car and driver in every port.
Some seven-night Miami-based sailings go for as low as $3,700 per person based on double occupancy.
For everyone on board is the spa with an infinity pool that looks out over the stern, fitness center, jogging track, casino, several lounges, card room, library and main pool. Top-deck fun includes pickleball, shuffleboard, mini golf and ping-pong.
A big draw to Regent is the mostly inclusive offerings, including free and unlimited shore excursions, round-trip flights, unlimited internet, prepaid gratuities, ground transfers and other amenities.
One of the best offerings on board, though, isn’t free. Back again is the Culinary Arts Kitchen, a staple borrowed from sister line Oceania Cruises, but a massively popular offering that lets 18 students create memorable dishes under the guidance of a chef team.
Chef John Stephano leads a class in the Culinary Arts Kitchen on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur on Jan. 25, 2024. The ship is the third of three sister ships for the luxury cruise line that debuted in late 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)
During a preview cruise for media in January out of PortMiami, the class was led by the amiable Chef John Stephano talking students through a pair of sample dishes – pasta al limone, which is lemon pasta, and French crêpes with an allspice berry ice cream, offered during what are normally two-hour-long classes twice per day on sailings.
“I promise you’re going to make delicious and delightful food,” he said but joked that “anybody that struggles with their culinary skills today, we’ll be sending you down to the galley to help us out.”
Stephano deftly demonstrates and drops bits of history and detail during the demonstration with students gathered around, who then go one of the 18 individual stations equipped with induction cooktops, stainless steel sinks and a collection of tools, tongs, pots and pans, while he and assistant chefs make the rounds to ensure everyone is figuring out the steps.
The course options vary per cruise pulling from nearly 50 curated thematic class titles such as “1493: The Foodies’ New World,” “Familia Cubana” and “Flip-Flop Floribbean.” Classes are an extra $89, which is about the only extra-cost feature on a Regent sailing. They are often themed to the location where the ships sail.
The culinary team also has a hand in creating some of the unique excursions, which then pair up with some of the classes.
Grandeur just finished out its first run about the Caribbean during mostly sold-out itineraries from PortMiami and is now amid a set of Mediterranean voyages for summer 2024. It will then make its way to New York for fall color itineraries of Canada and New England in September and October and then return to Miami to begin the winter Caribbean sailing season into 2025.
