Over the past 10 years, I’ve travelled extensively around the world as a solo female and attended numerous solo yoga retreats. Of course I was nervous not knowing what to expect the first time , but I’ve found my solo trips the most rewarding.

Here are the top five reasons I recommend everyone to go on a solo retreat at least once:

1. To Self-Reflect

In our normal everyday life, where we are regularly with others, our minds become clouded with the thoughts, opinions, and beliefs of those around us. The more influenced by others we become, the less in touch with ourselves we are. This is why taking alone time every now and again is so important.

Solo retreats are a great opportunity to self-reflect. Of course, you will still be around others, such as the retreat leaders and the other attendees so you’re unlikely to be lonely. But you will be away from all your friends and families who influence you the most. 

As well as being alone, on a solo retreat, you will be in a quiet and peaceful environment, typically in nature rather than a busy city. Here you’ll find that you think more clearly, allowing you to get in touch with your inner voice and connect within. This leads to questions such as “Am I happy with how my life is?”, “Am I satisfied with my work?” or “Am I showing up as the person I really want to be?”

2. To Nurture Your Relationship With Yourself

So many of us hate spending time alone. So much so that we fill all our free time with social events so that we never have to endure our own company. But why do we find spending time alone so challenging?

There are many reasons why we want to avoid our own company. One of the most common is that, when we are alone, we know uncomfortable feelings will come up. So we try to prevent that by keeping busy and always being around others. Another reason could be the negative stigma around being alone; thus, we associate it with being lonely.

However, the only way we can truly get to know ourselves and discover our passions, purpose, and values is through self-reflection, which can only happen during alone time. 

When we do everything with our friends or family, it is too easy to be influences by other and make decisions based on what others want. So, for example, we may take up running because our partner does it rather than because we have a genuine passion for it. 

Going on a solo retreat offers the chance to deepen our relationship with ourselves. In this environment, we have no one else’s needs or interests to consider, so every decision we make is purely down to what we want to do. 

This is one reason why solo wellness retreats can be so beneficial for self-discovery. There are many different kinds of retreats to choose from that offer various wellness activities, such as yoga , meditation, massage, hiking, pilates, etc.

As we are there on our own, we can try them all and get an accurate understanding of the types of activities we enjoy the most. This will help us learn more about the things we value and the things that are most important to us.

3. To Prioritise Yourself

Do you find that you’re always focused on making others happy or meeting their needs? Do you always put others first, whether it’s your children, partner, pets, or boss? Unfortunately, this is common among many women as society has created the misconception that the woman’s role is mainly to take care of others.

Sure, as women, we may also have a natural desire to nurture. However, this doesn’t mean we should put everyone else before ourselves. Yet, unfortunately, this is often what happens.

Prioritising everyone else above yourself and always trying to please others is not sustainable . Eventually, you will run out of energy to give to others. Or worse, you’ll give all your fuel to others and have none left for yourself. 

One of the biggest realisations I had by going on a solo retreat was the importance of filling my cup first . We cannot give to others from an empty cup, and spending time alone is a way to refill our cup.

And a retreat also teaches you how to implement this lesson into your daily life. The practices you learn on the retreat (like meditation and breathwork) become tools you can use back home to ensure your cup never gets empty again.

4. To Increase Your Productivity And Creativity

Some people go on a retreat vacation with a specific intention. This could be to finish the book they’ve been writing for ages, to find inspiration for a new project, or to work on a high-focus task.

A solo retreat is the perfect setting for finding inspiration, tapping into your creativity, or increasing productivity. Here you’re in a quiet, distraction-free environment where your mind is clear and calm. As a result, you might find you can suddenly complete something you have been struggling to finish for months. Or you can get your work done in half the time as usual. 

This will give you insight into what has been holding you back or stifling your creativity, allowing you to change what is needed to put it right. For example, you might realise that working at home is too distracting and try working from cafes, co-working spaces, parks, etc., instead. 

5. To Challenge Yourself

Lastly, solo travel can be pretty challenging, especially for women and even more so if it’s your first time travelling alone. It requires you to step out of your comfort zone – something we all hate to do, but need to do to grow.

Without your usual travel buddies, you’ll have to organise your travel plans, navigate your way around, and make decisions on your own. This will likely make you uncomfortable, but it is invaluable for your personal growth.

Hands down, travelling solo has been one of my biggest growth factors over the years. It made me much more confident in myself and my abilities, which greatly improved my self-image. Now, whenever I start to doubt myself, I think about all the times I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone by doing things like attending wellness retreats on my own.

If you’re excited to get started and plan your solo retreat there are several key steps you can take to ensure a successful experience.

People choose to go on solo retreats for different reasons. Perhaps you want to reflect on your life choices, get an important project done, develop healthier routines, prove to yourself that you can travel alone, or just taking some time out to prioritize self care.

Consider setting clear intentions and goals for what you want to get out of your experience, this will help you to plan a retreat that best suits your needs.

Types of Solo Retreats

There are a couple of different ways to do a solo retreat, the best one for you will depend on your personal circumstances and preferences.

DIY Retreat: If you are an experienced meditator and crave complete solitude you could book a cabin by a lake or beach hut on AirBnB and create your own DIY solo meditation retreat or writers retreat. Some people even do DIY retreats at home. This approach might save you money but you’ll need to have alot of discipline to not fall back into your regular routine and it can be quite isolating. Plus, you’ll still have to do household chores.

Private Retreat: If you want a private wellness retreat with professional guidance that is totally personalised to your needs look for a private retreat at a retreat centre. This is often the most expensive option but can also be the most beneficial. As well as expert instruction tailored to you, another advantage is that you’ll get pampered with healthy food and spa treatments. While the retreat will be private and only for you, check if you will be sharing the retreat centre with others if you want complete solitude.

Retreat for Solo Travelers: If you don’t want to go it totally alone, or can’t afford a private retreat, a popular option for solo travelers is to join a group retreat. Some yoga and wellness retreats are created especially with solo travelers in mind. I’ll recommend a few of my favorites at the end of this article.

In fact, yoga retreats are the perfect vacation for solo female travelers as you get to explore a new destination and try new activities in a safe, relaxed environment with a small group of like minded people. You’ll still get plenty of time alone and be free from the distractions of family, friends and work colleagues.

Some retreats are more sociable than others, some encourage plenty of group activities while some strict meditation retreats do not allow you to communicate at all with the other participants. So check with the organiser beforehand so that you choose one that meets your preferences.

Once you have decided on the type of retreat that suits you best, and managed to find some time away from your usual work and family commitments, start thinking about where to go on a solo retreat and the activities that you’d like to do there.

When I turned 30, I moved from Atlanta to Philadelphia, into a new job and out of a toxic relationship. My life had become a spiral that astrology-minded friends attributed to my Saturn Return—a planetary alignment that asks us to make pivotal decisions about our lives. (Think Mercury retrograde on steroids.) When my birthday rolled around, I wanted to honor my personal new year in some way—and establish a clearer vision for my life. It seemed like a good time to get away, get still, and spend time figuring out where my new path would take me.

As an introspective introvert, I didn’t want a splashy vacay. My life was calling for some quiet time away from the fray, the phone, and other distractions. I needed time to get my head together and think about my Next. A retreat seemed in order.

I didn’t have much time (or money) to go far, but I found a nearby retreat center that looked secluded and quiet. I booked a weekend trip, packed a bag, and jumped in my car. The lush green campus was 30 minutes from downtown Philly, but a world away from my city life. It was exactly what I needed–and the first of many solo retreats. They have become a personal tradition that I rely on for rest, recovery, and recalibration.

What is a solo retreat?

There’s solo travel , where intrepid travelers take off on some private adventure. But those kinds of trips are often more about getting “out there” than about “going within.”

And you can find plenty of yoga and meditation retreats at wellness centers around the world. In fact, carefully curated yoga retreats have become something of an industry. But they tend to be scheduled dawn to dark with activities–yoga classes, meditations, cooking classes, bodywork, dancing, drumming….  There’s always something to do and you don’t have to be alone at all.

When I say solo retreat, I’m thinking of the kind of intentional withdrawal periods that Christian priests, Buddhist monks, Hindu renunciates called sannyasins , and other ascetics in every spiritual and religious tradition have been taking for centuries. These seekers of enlightenment may spend periods in contemplation and prayer or doing intentional work, away from the distractions of the world. Hindu devotees retreat in order to spend time in meditation, studying philosophical texts, and performing acts of devotion. In the Catholic tradition , a retreat requires “a series of days passed in solitude and consecrated to practices of asceticism.”

That “series of days” is an important element of retreating. An overnight in another bed somewhere hardly gives you time to resolve your jet lag or recover your land legs, much less spend time in deep contemplation. Retreats take time.

Finding Elements of Ease

To me, a retreat has an element of ease and simplicity. When I’m on vacation, I may be concerned about the threadcount of my hotel sheets or how many stars the restaurant has. On a retreat, I want a clean and comfortable bed, and clean and comforting food. Ideally, I’d like a place to practice yoga and a place to meditate, and I’ll accept a massage or a sauna if it’s offered, but the lavishness of the surroundings is not the point. In fact, that can be an outer-world distraction from the inner world I’m trying to access.

When I look for a retreat, I try to find a setting that offers quiet paths to walk and places to sit undisturbed–whether that’s in a sun-dappled chapel or a grove of trees. The retreat spaces I like have set meal times and buffets of nourishing food, so I don’t have to decide what to order from the menu or calculate a tip. And there’s always tea.

Over the years I’ve taken many of these solo escapes. Here are some things I’ve learned about planning the most fruitful personal retreats.

1. Peace and Quiet is a Commodity

My first solo retreat was at Pendle Hill , a center run by the Society of Friends. As you’d expect from a place run with Quaker values, the accommodations were simple but comfortable. There was the option to rent a hermitage, a cottage set away from the main campus where I would be totally alone. For my first time, I didn’t need quite that much solitude. I chose a room in one of the main lodgings.

The communal dining area included “silent” tables for people who wanted to remain in quiet contemplation. But all of the conversation was gentle and quiet. This was not the place for raucous laughter or boisterous debate–indoors or out. During the day, I would find a place to sit in the October sun and write in my journal. Or I’d take a walk around the grounds. I might come across other people wandering alone or huddled together in muted conversation, but the contemplative mood infused the whole experience.  When you’re trying to go within, it helps if you’re around other people with the same intention.

2. Going Alone Doesn’t Mean Being Alone

For me, being at a solo retreat means I can choose to keep to myself as much as I need or want. Or I can get out of my comfort zone and strike up a conversation with someone I feel drawn to. Often, people who see that you’re alone will introduce themselves and strike up conversation. If you set an intention about how much engagement you want to have, it’s your choice about whether to respond politely and go on about your way, or to engage fully and make a connection.

At Pendle Hill, I met a young woman from Canada who had come for an extended retreat. We ended up taking meals together and having long talks. She invited me to a Quaker meeting in the city; that became my spiritual practice for a number of years. Being open to that serendipitous connection influenced my path in ways that I could not have predicted.

3. It’s Okay to Be Myself and Feed My Own Needs

I’ve done girls’ trips and group excursions. I find that people quickly settle into roles. The Organizer suggests activities; the Outspoken one sets the agenda; the One with the Food Restrictions determines the restaurants we’ll choose. Traveling with a group means being willing to compromise so that everyone’s needs are met.

A solo retreat involves only one person’s needs: yours. That means you get to decide what to do each day. At the beginning of a retreat, I tend to make those choices like I make any other decision–based on logic or strategy or whatever my intellect tells me is best. I find that as I settle into my retreat, I can feel my left brain give way to my creative side, and I sense myself reconnecting with my intuition. Then, where I go and how I move on any given day is determined by a sense of flow.

4.  When Spirit Moves, Move With It

One year, my annual retreat took me to a rambling house in upstate New York that a friend had recommended. I found it cold and uncomfortable—no heat against the fall chill and not enough blankets. When I went to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea, I found an infinite variety of tea boxes—each of them crisscrossed with spider webs. It was more than I could take. I cut my trip short and came home the next day. Had I been traveling with someone, I might have been tempted (or convinced) to stay. In this case, I didn’t have to compromise. I didn’t have to explain. I could move with my own spirit.

5. Take Time for Contemplation

Solo travel may involve all kinds of activities and adventures, but you don’t go alone on a retreat unless you plan to spend at least some time alone with yourself. For me, an ideal retreat space will have opportunities for quiet walks, a place to practice yoga, and meditation space. Because journaling is my preferred way to get out of my head and tap into my heart, quiet places to sit and write are essential. If hiking or swimming or walking a labyrinth help you feel meditative, look for a retreat location where those options are available.

6.  Let Go of Expectations

One fortunate summer, I received a scholarship for a week-long retreat at the Omega Institute. By this time, I was a divorced single mom, living on the modest salary of a liberal arts professor. A free week anywhere was a blessed opportunity to get away, but also a chance to get some writing projects done. While I was disciplined enough to make it to early morning yoga classes, most afternoons found me sitting on the deck outside the cafe with my bare feet propped up on the railing doing nothing . Or I’d retire to my little vine-shrouded cabin, fling open the windows to let in the breeze, and fall into deep naps, lulled by the hum and chirp of the insects. After the first couple of days, I realized that my lack of motivation to “get something done” was the result of how burned out I was from work and responsibility. I let go of the idea that I needed to produce something and devoted myself to the rest I needed.

The Reason for Retreat

In my daily life, I have responsibility for… everything—myself, the house, work tasks, my child, and now my parent. I wouldn’t give up the freedom to make my own decisions, but I admit there are times when I might relish a sounding board or a helping hand. So why would a trip alone seem so nourishing? I think it comes down to being able to attend more fully to your own needs.

Whether you’re living solo, coupled, or in community, your days may be busy and full of distractions. It’s easy to find yourself moving around the world on someone else’s timeline and, if you’re not careful, on someone else’s agenda. Solo retreats are a time to remind yourself of your own rhythms. I ask myself pointed questions: What do I like? What do I need? What pleases me? If I pick the right spot and spend enough time, I can find my own flow again.

Or course, a solo retreat tests your ability to enjoy your own company, to tolerate the voice in your own head. But if you allow yourself the time and space to do some helpful introspection, you may come away with a sense of clarity and direction. Or you may not.  The product of your time alone makes little difference if it gives you a chance to practice self-acceptance and self-love. The ideal solo sojourn allows you to see the value of spending time with someone as special as you.

Solo travel was one of the top trends to emerge from Forbes Travel Guide’s 2024 Summit.

This trend is popular for a few reasons:

  • Solo travel affords maximum freedom and flexibility. Go where you want when you want and explore on your own terms, rather than acquiescing to a companion or group’s wants and concerns.
  • It gives you a chance to reconnect with yourself. There’s only one agenda when you’re traveling alone, and it’s the one that you create for yourself. You’ll tune into yourself to discover your needs and wants.
  • It can provide a sense of empowerment. You leave your comfort zone when you go on any trip. Going alone means that you’ll rely solely on yourself to navigate all situations, which can boost confidence.
  • It can be a cure for loneliness. In 2023, more than half of Americans reported feeling lonely consistently . It’s counterintuitive, but going abroad alone can open you up to meeting new people. You may be more inclined to strike up conversations with strangers than you would be if you had a travel companion.

If you’re nervous about traveling on your own, you can go solo with a group. There are tours and trips you can join that are designed for solo travelers.

Here’s my short list of destinations that are ideal for solo travelers.

For someone taking their first trip as a solo traveler, the capital of Uruguay—despite not being on many people’s radar—is a great choice.

It’s safe, so solo travelers can feel comfortable exploring on their own. In fact, Uruguay is the highest-rated South American country in the 2023 Global Peace Index, coming in at #50.

It’s affordable and offers plenty to see and do—from learning about Guacho (cowboy) culture and attending barbecues to watching soccer matches and enjoying mate (tea made from the yerba mate plant).

It’s replete with historically significant landmarks; architecture from the Islamic, Gothic, and Renaissance eras; parks with walking trails; cycle lanes; flamenco music and dancing; river cruises; café and tapas culture; and more.

It’s also vibrant, with people socializing in plazas or on the terraces of restaurants until late in the evening most nights of the week. This constant presence of others at night can make a solo traveler feel more at ease, although this city is very safe to begin with.

Locals are friendly and welcoming. However, the English-speaking ability of those not in the tourism industry is limited. Speaking a bit of Spanish definitely enhances your travel experience in Seville.

Hanoi, Vietnam

With its bustling streets, constant traffic, quick-moving scooters, vibrant markets, and street hawkers, Hanoi has a buzz about it. It pulls people in and keeps them constantly entertained.

Its chief attraction is its Old Quarter, a labyrinth of a neighborhood that features a mix of architectural styles, from French mansions to Chinese temples to Buddhist pagodas. It’s a dense neighborhood that’s full of landmarks, restaurants, and cafés and is best explored on foot.

Hanoi is safe and affordable. It has a flourishing tourism industry, with tours and experiences available for all kinds of travelers.

Street food tours are a great way to sample the best of Hanoian cuisine and can also be a way to give back, as they’re often hosted by local university students who are eager to practice their English skills.

Dining in Hanoi is a casual affair; meals at local-style restaurants tend to be quick and informal, so you’ll never feel uncomfortable going to a restaurant by yourself.

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

California second-grade teacher becomes rare traveler to visit every country in the world

A schoolteacher in the San Francisco area has joined the elite ranks of humans who have visited every nation on Earth.

Lucy Hsu, who teaches second grade in San Jose, California, has officially visited 193 nations.

Most travel clubs and groups use the number of nations as 193 because that’s how many nations are members of the United Nations, Hsu explains.

Hsu, as  NBC Bay Area first reported , visited the last country on her list, Syria, in May 2023.

She says she waited a long time for Syria to be open again to Americans (the United States Department of State put the country on its “Do Not Travel” list months after Hsu visited). When she finally traveled there, she was bracing herself “to make sure nothing happens.”

“When we got into Syria ... I felt really excited, obviously, and a little bit surreal,” she tells TODAY.com “I couldn’t believe this was actually happening. I felt very calm. Like there was a sense of calm that ‘Oh, I’ve reached my goal.’”

There is no official tally of who has visited every country in the world but it’s estimated to be somewhere around 400.

The daughter of Vietnamese refugees, Hsu says she didn’t travel much as a child and got her first passport at 23.

“Growing up, it was a very modest upbringing and we never went anywhere,” Hsu says, but before going back to school for her master’s degree, she decided to get her passport and go backpacking through Europe. From there, she caught the travel bug and made it a goal to travel every summer.

As her country count climbed higher and higher, she figured out how to keep her costs low and give back at the same time.

“I realized if I planned my summers properly, I could travel on a low budget and see a couple of countries that are clustered together,” she explains. “And then I realized by the time I’d traveled for five or six years, I’d reached probably 60-70 countries.”

She says she discovered networks of other international travelers in various clubs who offered tips and new destination goals. She joined the Century Club — which has the goal of hitting 100 countries — and then once she reached that goal, Hsu figured she would keep going.

“And I just thought, ‘Well, how could I go to 193? Is it possible?” she says. “Then I realized, ‘Oh, you actually can go to Afghanistan safely. And you can actually go to Iran and North Korea safely.’ So why not?”

How is Hsu able to afford so much travel?

Hsu, 42, says that the biggest question people ask her is how she’s able to afford to travel so much.

She says it’s through a variety of cost-saving strategies but her biggest one is by signing up to do volunteer exchange programs and homestays.

She says she uses  Workaway  — a subscription-based website that connects volunteers with vetted organizations — to find hosts and opportunities.

She says she’s done many different types of cultural exchanges but mostly ones “geared towards education and working with children because that’s my profession and that’s my passion.”Courtesy Lucy Hsu

Hsu adds that she is a “low-key traveler” and often stays in hostels using a website called  HostelWorld  — and has even found deals working at hostels in exchange for her room and board.

She offered a few other suggestions for traveling on a smaller budget, including earning credit card points to rack up rewards.

Hsu says she has also taken low-cost buses across borders and trains while on her travels.

She says it’s important to her to help people realize that travel is more attainable than they might think.

“There’s still a lot of misconceptions about travel being unattainable ... or that it’s very unsafe or unaffordable,” she says.

But now, she says, she’s learned how to make trips happen and wants to spread the knowledge — especially as, Hsu notes, there are so few minority women in her international travel community.

“Travel is attainable if you’ve learned ways to do it in a budget-conscious way. And those methods are out there if you want to research,” she says. “Travel is less unattainable than people think.”

Hsu’s favorite countries out of 193

Hsu says it’s hard to choose her favorite trips because she’s had so many wonderful experiences but Mongolia stands out in her mind.

“It’s really this land of undiscovered adventure,” she says, explaining she stayed a few days in the Gobi Desert in a yurt with a local family. She reminisced about riding the family’s camels in the morning and sliding down sand dunes with the children.

She also mentioned her love for her “Kenyan family” whom she stayed with for several months one summer and traveled around Eastern Africa.

“The thing that really reminds me of the value of travel is just a sense of gratitude for how much we have in our world. Yet we’re often unsatisfied because we want more,” she says.

“And I think those lessons I bring home to me when you want to complain about you know, there’s traffic or the weather sucks today, or my internet’s down and then you realize, ‘OK, let’s stop for a moment. There’s people living happily with none of those things.’”

Hsu’s tips for staying safe as a solo traveler or going to less touristy destinations

Hsu says the key to staying safe while traveling is to do your research ahead of time. For example, she says when she was debating going to North Korea, she initially thought it “sounds like a really stupid idea.”

“But once you do the research, then you realize, ‘Oh, there’s actually three companies that have been taking travelers to North Korea for eight years,’” she says.

She says relying on her network of fellow experienced travelers for recommendations for things like guides, drivers and translators, also made her feel safe, along with following the local rules.

Where is Hsu off to next?

Even though she’s now traveled to every nation (and Antarctica!), Hsu still has big plans for the future. She’s interested in traveling on a cargo ship, she says, and has several new cities and regions in countries she’s previously visited that she would like to see.

“It’s like what they say: ‘The more you learn, the more you realize you don’t know much,” she laughs. “And the more I travel, the more I realize I haven’t seen anything yet.”
