The most popular way to reach Nagarkot is by road. You can take a local bus or hire a private car/taxi from Kathmandu to take you directly to Nagarkot in around 2 hours. The route is scenic and takes you through beautiful landscapes and traditional villages. You can also take a motorbike or cycle if you are looking for a more adventurous journey.

By Helicopter

A helicopter ride is an excellent option if you want to arrive in Nagarkot in style and have a larger budget. You will get an aerial view of the Himalayan mountains and the surrounding landscapes, making for an unforgettable experience. The helicopter ride from Kathmandu to Nagarkot takes around 30 minutes.

By Trekking

7 Best Things to do in Nagarkot (and how to get there)

The peaceful hill town of Nagarkot lies around 30km east of Kathmandu and makes a lovely break from the intensity of Nepal’s capital. It’s best known for it’s relaxing atmosphere and incredible mountain views – if you get a clear day then you can even see Everest peeking out in the distance.

It’s a relatively small place and whilst you wouldn’t spend an entire holiday here, there’s plenty to do for a couple of days or even just visiting on a day trip.

How to get to Nagarkot from Kathmandu

From Kathmandu, the road leads east and into the hills. Once you’ve made it out of the city traffic, the journey should take around 1.5hrs along winding roads of varying quality.

By Local bus: If you’re on a budget or just like the experience of local travel, then you can head to Bhaktapur Bus Stop in Kathmandu, a little east of Ratna Park. The public bus doesn’t run directly to Nagarkot so you’ll need to jump off in Bhaktapur and catch a bus from there .  

The journey should take around 3hrs in total, and the bus driver and locals can help you out if you get confused!

By Car: Slightly more expensive but much easier, your other option is to take a taxi or private transfer . If you need a taxi then you can ask your hotel to call one for you, or head to the Thamel area and try your luck at haggling. You should expect to pay between 2000 and 3000 NPR for a one way journey.

7 Great things to do in Nagarkot

Nagarkot is a serene and relaxing place so you may choose to just, well, relax! If so then there are views to enjoy and plenty of nice little restaurants to visit. If you’re looking to explore some more, then here are our favourite things to do in Nagarkot.

1. Hike to the Nagarkot View tower (and maybe see everest...)

The view tower sits just outside of town and is a relatively easy hike up the main road, achievable for most people. Once you reach the tower you’ll have a panoramic view of your surroundings, including famous mountains such as Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung and Dorje Lakpa. You can also get a distant view of Mount Everest , but only on a cloudless day.

Make sure you take enough cash with you, as there’s a 350NPR fee for non-Nepali visitors.

2. Hike the panoramic trail

There are a variety of longer hikes possible around Nagarkot, with the most popular being the Panoramic Trail – a scenic 12km loop around the area which includes the Nagarkot Nature Trail and the Tamang Village Walk.

You can either enlist a local guide or hike independently. Information about the route is available locally.

3. Plant a tree at the Buddha Peace Park

A pleasant walk of around an hour from Nagarkot brings you to the Buddha Peace Park – a large golden Buddha stature surrounded by an open park.

It looks over the valley and is a lovely spot to enjoy some peace a quiet.

For a small fee (around 350NPR) they will help you plant a tree to commemorate a lost loved one, bringing a meaningful moment to your time in Nagarkot.

4. Catch the sunrise

Even if you’re not a morning person, it’s worth getting up early to watch a fantastic sunrise – the surroundings will doubtless make it one of the more memorable ones you’ll have seen!

You’ll need to find a good spot to get the best view, and if you’re on the wrong side of the hill then you’ll see very little. During high-season many hotels will offer organised trips, but otherwise you can ask locally and it’ll often just be a short walk.

Country Villa is known to be a good spot, and they’re usually fine with sunrise visitors so long as you buy a coffee or snack.

5. Go mountain Biking

The area around Nagarkot looks like it was created specifically for biking, with rocky trails winding through the spectacular countryside. In particular, the route known as “the loop” is very popular. During high season, mountain bikes will be available to rent locally, although this may be more difficult out of season. 

6. Try Paragliding

On a clear day, there’s really no better way to see this area than from the sky. There are a few local providers who run paragliding experiences during the high season, if you’re brave enough!

7. Enjoy local life at Nagarkot Community Homestay

If you want to see a truly authentic side of Nagarkot then spending a night or two at the Community Homestay is the perfect solution. Located just outside town, this small and welcoming community gives you the chance to stay with a local family, enjoying home cooking and experiencing village life. You can even get involved in daily chores and organise trips to the nearby waterfall or hikes through the countryside.

After a day of adventure in Nagarkot, you might find it tempting to unwind with some light entertainment. 6 Brilliant Things to Do in Nagarkot, in Nepal

People come to Nagarkot for the views of the Himalayas, including the epic Mount Everest. One of the main things to do in Nagarkot is to just relax, breathe the mountain air after the polluted fog of the city, and admire the panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley.

It’s quite the adventure to get up there, the Nagarkot altitude is more than 2000m (7000ft) above sea level. It’s also 28km from Kathmandu Airport, and another 4 on top from the centre of Kathmandu.

The journey is all part of the adventure in Nagarkot.

You can see 8 of the 13 Himalayan ranges in Nepal from here. These include the Annapurna range, Manaslu Range, Ganesh Himal Range, Langtang range, Jugal Range, Rowaling Range, Mahalangur Range (Everest Range) and the Numbur Range.

What to do in Nagarkot

1. Paragliding in Nagarkot

Paragliding in Nagarkot is apparently a ‘thing’, although I didn’t actually see anyone else doing it, not like the paragliders that became like birds in the sky when I went to visit Pokhara in Nepal.

I didn’t actually see anywhere offering it either so if you want to paraglide in Nagarkot, I’d recommend you book it beforehand.

2. Watch the Nagarkot sunrise

The Nagarkot sunrise is famous. You need to be carefully positioned to watch it from the best spot.

In season, my hotel the Hotel at the End of the Universe , offers sunrise trips to the best point which was apparently 20 minutes away. But in February, out of season, it was down to me to find the best spot.

I knew which side of the mountain to be on, which in my 6:30am panic led me to the lush Country Villa. I just bolshed my way in there, and no one seemed to mind.

You could buy a drink to enjoy on the terrace, or just sit there – as I did. 

3. Enjoy the Nagarkot hiking

Hiking is one of the main things to do in Nagarkot. If you don’t fancy some OTT adventure then the Nagarkot Panoramic Hiking Trail is a great option. It’s 14km long, and a simple hike taking in absolutely incredible natural views.

4. Go trekking in Nagarkot 

I actually just had to look up the difference between hiking and trekking. You learn a new thing every day! 

So trekking in Nagarkot is the more difficult of the two. Well, there are loads of Nagarkot treks you can do.

– Chisapani to Nagarkot Trek  

Sundarijal Chisapani Nagarkot Trek is the most extensive trek, and takes 6 days. Experience the culture, mountain viewing, bird watching and a jungle walk in just 6-days. The route is full of beautiful streams, cool shades, tall trees, calm, peaceful, and tranquil atmosphere. The Chisapani to Nagarkot Trek begins at Sundarijal.

– Newari to Sankhu Trek

The Nagarkot hiking route begins from the ancient Newari town of Sankhu and stretches via the holy Sali River, pine forest, lush valley and paddy fields to the top of Nagarkot hill that lies at the staggering height of 2195m. You’ll see women weaving traditional haku patasi dress, corn hanging from the roof and chillies left on road for drying purpose give the sense of pastoral setting.

The trail twists and turns through the pine forest to Nagarkot view tower, where you can see a glimpse of breathtaking sunset over Himalayas along with mountain views from Annapurna to Everest. 

– Treks in Nagarkot 

There are two examples of Nagarkot treks, trust me, there are loads more. The Everest view here is just unmatched.

5. Nagarkot View Point Tower

You can hike up to the Nagarkot View Point Tower in about an hour, and you’ll be rewarded with 360 views of the incredible Himalayas. This would be a great spot to watch the sunrise from.

The Nagarkot view tower is one of the most popular tourist spots in Nagarkot. Lots of people wake up early to really enjoy the magnificence of the Himalayas. Expect unobstructed landscapes, rolling hills, thick pine forests and charming villages.

6. Go mountain biking

Mountain biking in Nagarkot would be awesome . The hills here are crazy. There’s an incredible mountain biking route from Nagarkot all the way to Bhaktapur. 

Enjoy a Himalayan biking adventure challenge with amazing views of the Himalayas. Blaze through the trails going uphill, downhill with villages, terraced farmlands and forests on the way before reaching Bhaktapur.

Nagarkot weather

Being at such high altitude the weather in Nagarkot is quite interchangeable. There might be quite a lot of mist in the morning, but it will pass and reveal the stunning views. 

Here’s a screenshot from weather.com to give you an idea of the temperature when you’re there. When I was there in February it was hot and sunny in the day, and then blummin freezing at night. 

Where to stay in Nagarkot

I stayed at the Hotel at the End of the Universe , which totally felt like that when we were trying to find it in the taxi. The USP of this place is the 360 views from the restaurant. Also, the food!

I stayed in a private room for $24 a night in February. I had a double bed, a desk and my own bathroom. The only problem was it was bladdy freezing in February when I was there. They did give me two duvets but I was too scared of the cold to even use the shower.

I heard one guy at breakfast saying he had a travel electric blanket. I mean, he knows the score.

Next time. 

I’d definitely recommend the Hotel at the End of the Universe , especially in summer.

It’s also a great place for food.

I had a tomato soup with cheesy garlic bread for dinner, and then eggs and a cheese toasty for breakfast. Both were exceptional, compared to what I’d had so far in Nepal.

Budget hotels in Nagarkot

Another great budget option would be the Hotel Valley View. This was perfectly located for the sunset Nagarkot is so famous for.

If you want to go a bit further upmarket, then the Hotel Country Villa looked lush. I went for a wander on my first day (no one seemed to mind) and then to watch the sunrise on the second day too.

How to get to Nagarkot

I’d read all this about how you could get a bus to Nagarkot, but, I followed the instructions with no success. Here’s what you actually need to do to get a bus to Nagarkot.

Tribhuvan Airport to Nagarkot

Walk out of the airport, and all the way down the exit street, about 5 minutes walk, until you reach the roundabout. Stay on the left. You’ll see a little bus station. Right, you need to ask everyone to help you get a bus to Bhakaputer.

I tried, for an hour, with three different people helping me and failed miserably. Ended up having to walk back up to the airport and getting a taxi as I just couldn’t find a bus.

I did get one easily on the way back to the airport from Nagarkot though. Go to the tourist bus park in Nagarkot, which is just at the bottom of the town. You’ll see it because all the buses are there. Ask someone to help you find the bus to Bhakatupur. Keep asking until you know you’re definitely on your way. I found that people will give you the wrong information when trying to help – that was the problem before.

Sit on it until they chuck you off in Bhakatupur. Then, again, ask around for the next bus to the airport. Luckily for me it was leaving just after I arrived. So I jumped on. I bought my suitcase on and then the bus assistant helped to find it a space.

Time and cost of the bus from Kathmandu Airport to Nagarkot

The bus took about 50 minutes to get to Bhakatupur, and then another hour to the airport. The bus cost 60 NPR to Bhakatupur, and then 50 to the airport.

Time and cost of a taxi from Kathmandu Airport to Nagarkot

You can pick up a fixed price taxi outside the airport arrivals door. From Kathmandu Airport to Nagarkot it’s 2900 and then I gave a 10% tip. It took about 90 minutes to get there. 

Time and cost of a taxi from Kathmandu city centre to Nagarkot

You can pick up a taxi in Thamel, which will cost a few more rupees as you’re further away, or, you can get a bus to Bhakatupur. And then repeat the above. You can pick one up in Thamel on any street. There are taxis everywhere. 

My recommendation to get from Kathmandu Airport to Nagarkot

I actually preferred getting down the mountain in the bus, rather than the taxi. My taxi driver kept using his phone, which makes me very nervous, and he made the journey up seem like some crazy slalom whereas the bus just chilled on the way down. And obviously, the bus is SO much cheaper. More interesting too.

If I did it again I’d bus to Bhakatupur, and then get a taxi to the airport. That journey seemed to take forever. 

Tourism charge for visiting Nagarkot

Nagarkot is such a beautiful place the government have decided that you should have to pay to visit such beauty – 339 Nepalese Rupees, which works out as £2.50ish.

Make sure you have this ready in cash, although there are ATMs at the top of the mountain.

Best restaurants in Nagarkot

Berg House Cafe

I randomly wandered into this place because it looked like it would have the best sunset views and was very excited by the food options too.

This ended up being my favourite dining experience of my whole trip to Nepal – f or setting, food and price. I had prawn crackers (freshly made and bladdy delicious), with hot sauce, and then a mahoosive plate of veggie fried rice. It was 4pm-ish and I hadn’t had any lunch so I was ravenous and despite being surprised by the size of it when it arrived, I ate the lot.

Along with a ginger and lemon tea, which has become my new favourite drink.

Hotel at the End of the Universe

I had breakfast and dinner here and they were genuinely two of the best meals of the entire trip to Nepal. Basic, but full of flavour and enjoyed in an absolutely incredible setting.

I’d definitely recommend waking up early to really make the most of all the things to do in Nagarkot. Everything looks better at sunrise right?

And then you can spend the afternoon basking in the sun, as I did on both days.

To be honest, as I always am, the best thing to do in Nagarkot, after you’ve been hiking, is nothing at all. I met one guy who’d chosen to visit Nagarkot as he was writing a book and wanted some peace and quiet without too much of a distraction.

It’s a wonderful, beautiful place that I’d absolutely 100% recommend visiting when you go to Nepal.

Nagarkot, Nepal – Exploring The Villages in the Himalayan Valley

Nagarkot is a laid-back village that lies just 32km from the capital city of Kathmandu, in Nepal. What makes it special? Its altitude and the proximity to the greatest mountains on the planet – the Himalayas.

Located over 7200 meters, people of this quaint village wake up amidst the mountains to call the likes of Mount Everest as their neighbor!

Being an avid mountain lover, this was enough to make me fall for this little town. After getting introduced to the chaotically beautiful Kathmandu, I was hoping for a similar whirlwind of an experience with noisy streets, dust, narrow roads and unkempt buildings.

But my assumptions were tossed out of my window of imaginations in a few minutes, as we rode from Kathmandu. As we moved away from the city, the landscape of Nepal changed dramatically, making me feel close to the mountains.

The valleys further from the city opened up to the snow-capped Himalayas, and this sudden transition felt awesome.

We had almost 2 days in Nagarkot, and apart from visiting the prominent places of interest, the main highlight was the sunrise and the trek in the villages of Nagarkot.

When I mention trekking in Nepal, obviously the mega treks of Mount Everest base camp or Mount Annapurna base camp treks come to your mind.

But the beauty of enjoying the Himalayas in Nepal lies in the fact that there are many other hikes for everyone including the not-so-interested trekkers or the physically incapable to soak in the best of these snow-clad peaks.

The Ghorepani Poon hill trek , which was scheduled after this, had the promise of a full-fledged encounter with Mount Annapurna. So, I was guaranteed of the splendid views of my favorite mountains already.

But when Matt explained us the plan of a small hike in the valley of Nagarkot, I was elated at another prospect of wandering in the Himalayas.

The day we arrived in Nagarkot was much relaxed. I sat on the balcony that overlooked the valley. The serene mountains looked like they embraced each other to form a delusional horizon that never seemed to end.

The warm sun got slowly being ridden away by the chill winds that grew as the sunset approached. So did the mist that blurred the views after a while.

However, the hazy view didn’t deter me much. Being here amidst the mountains in the valley of Nagarkot itself was very consoling after spending time in noisy Kathmandu.

We gathered for dinner and chatted about the Himalayas. As Shyam patiently answered all our curious questions about the conquest of Mount Everest , I savored the delicious Thupka listening to him intently.

He is a champ himself, who has done the base camp trek of Everest more than 50 times! And he is just 26! This feat itself was enough for us to probe him to listen to his tales of treks, which varied from funny to dangerous to weird experiences.

So after chatting about the Himalayas at length and  Sherpas – the heroes of Nepal , we hit bed hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunrise.

Good Morning, Nagarkot – I am Mr. Mist!

Shyam had given his prediction on the sunrise time as after 6 AM. But given the misty weather, none of us was hoping for a great sunrise.

I woke up and went to the top around 7 AM to find a blurred view of the valley. The valley basked in the golden morning rays, but the mist masked it enough to hide the best views.

Yes, we were not lucky to witness any gorgeous views of the Himalayas in the clouds. I was obviously disappointed, and so I fast forwarded my thoughts to anticipate for the next thing on the trip, which was the trek in the village of Sanku.

A Hike in Nagarkot Valle y

We first headed to the Namo Buddha Monastery , where we witnessed the soulful Buddhist prayers. The valley of Nagarkot dotted with terrace fields, pine trees, and the homes that seemed like sprinkled in between appeared serene from the top of the monastery.

It felt like a perfect location to pray, reflect and watch in the temple as I got down passing through energetic young monks who smiled sheepishly at me and looked eagerly at my camera. I managed to click two boys who flashed their best smile before joining others for lunch.

After savoring Nepali cuisine for lunch, we began our trek. It was a downhill trail in the beginning. A canopy of tall trees was above us and on one side was the steep gorge. The hot sun was cut off by the trees, and hence it was a relief to walk down.

We passed through many wooden houses, curiously looking locals, kids, and yards consisting of many orange trees.

Just when I thought the landscape had begun to turn static, we reached the end of the hill and the views changed.

We were in front of many hills embedded with terraced fields, lovely yellow flowers of mustard plants, and orange trees sandwiched between pine & oak trees.

  Day 22: I was MIA for sometime from Instagram, caught up with things! So, I have some more pics from Nepal to share with you before I move to my next destination for photostories. We did a trek in the Sanku Valley, away from Kathmandu and not only did we get to witness the village life closely but was fortunate to see these views of the valley. With less than 50 homes, one road and all of nature, it was a surreal feeling to getaway after experiencing the bustling capital city. I love hikes, trek and activities precisely for these reasons – it gives me a chance to get close to nature, observe the things that we either taken for granted or miss to notice. Passing through this, we walked through homes, many of them that were locked and looked abandoned. The devastating earthquake of 2015 in Nepal had had its gruesome effect.

People had migrated to other villages or mostly to Kathmandu to rebuild their lives.

The thought of being uprooted by homes forever in the blink of the eyes intimidated and saddened me at the same time. How does it feel to wake up one day to have no home? To let go of the home that you grew up and made the best memories?

As I passed through these buildings that looked elegant despite being shut, I hoped to find some comforting answers in the eyes of the people that remained or that I came across.

Those who stayed appeared unaffected – at least when I saw them, after enduring the hardships of the after effects of the quake of course.

  Day 23: Locked doors greeted us as we hiked through Sanku village. When I asked a villager, he told me that many people migrated from the village after the earthquake created a havoc, and their relatives lost their homes, and means of income in the areas of Kathmandu. People were bound to give up on what they called their homes, to support, build and start all over. As I walked, these doors evoked an eerie silence and I thought about what must have gone through – Leaving home is a big thing, letting go of a place that created the best memories of your life is no easy feat. However, moving elsewhere and starting over means creating new memories. Because as they say, change is the only constant in life. Isn’t it? It was almost evening when we finally arrived to board our cabs after a contentful hike in the afternoon.

Nagarkot showed me the lives of the people very closely and the beauty of the valley that cast its charm in its unique way.

I don’t know about you, but the mountains always soothe my mind and calm my senses, and that feeling of Zen is priceless, to say the least!

  Planning your trip

Nagarkot is easily reachable from Kathmandu, being an hour ride away. You can take public buses or cabs to arrive.

The ideal time to visit Nagarkot is 2 to 3 days if you wish to keep a day’s buffer to witness the sunrise as the weather can get unpredictable around post-winter.

Where to stay?

Depending on your budget, there are various kinds of accommodation available. The best ones are those that are located overlooking the valley, as the rooms offer the best views of the snow-laden Himalayas to wake up to (if you are not unlucky like me, that is!).

There are many good restaurants if you wish to stick to Nepali or Tibetan cuisine, where you can enjoy tasty Thupkas, Momos or Dal Bhat!

6 best things to do in nagarkot, nepal [2024 travel guide].

Though it isn't a major backpacking spot in Nepal, Nagarkot is becoming increasingly popular amongst those travellers looking to experience rural Nepal.

Ok, it’s not truly rural!

There are now plenty of hotels and small local restaurants in the area.

However, due to there being quite poor road infrastructure in place, it’s not a part of the typical Nepal itineraries .

Still, I honestly think it's one of the nicest places to visit in Nepal, and there's plenty on offer for those looking to take it easy for a few days and capture some close-up views of the Himalayas.

But before we dig deeper into my what there is to see and do in Nagarkot , let’s answer one pressing question ...

Travellerspoint

How do you get to Nagarkot?

The most common route people take is going from Kathmandu to Nagarkot.

Which is unsurprising because they’re just an hour and a half away from each other.

But after an hour or so of searching online, we were still left wondering …

“How on Earth do you get from Kathmandu to Nagarkot!?”

You would imagine that there are tourist buses that run the route every day. However, this no longer appears to be the case.

Instead, you are left with two real options. The first being to take a local bus …

Taking the bus from Kathmandu to Nagarkot

After speaking to locals about doing this, we were told you have to head up to the main hospital in the North of Kathmandu and then catch a bus from outside there.

This supposedly takes you outside the city, at which point you need to switch and take a different bus.

All in all, the journey could take up to 3 hours and no one really knew what the times were.

But apparently the buses out of Kathmandu do run quite frequently, and they are incredibly cheap.

All in all, this option seemed like a lot of hassle. Especially seeing as Cazzy’s foot was still recovering from a nasty sprain and we had not long arrived back from horrible 8 hour bus journeys across the rest of the country.

Instead, we decided to opt for the much more straightforward alternative …

Taking a taxi from Kathmandu to Nagarkot

You’ll find taxis everywhere in Kathmandu, especially if you're staying in the popular Thamel area.

The going rate is 2500 rupees to go all the way to Nagarkot, or 4000 if you want to go there and come straight back.

We managed to barter a driver down to 2000, however, after arriving I decided to pay 2500 instead.

Simply because the roads up there are dreadful!

Leaving Kathmandu can be quite a slow process as there are so many thousands of cars littering the roads in and out.

However, once you leave and start on the road up to Nagarkot, you'll see very few cars.

At the same time, however, the roads are filled with massive potholes and, in most areas, there is no road left.

Apparently the government have been on about fixing the roads for years now but still haven't got round to doing it.

For this reason alone, I am very grateful that we were in a taxi, rather than bounding up the track in a bus!

The Kathmandu to Nagarkot distance is about 33 km and the journey will take around 1.5 hours each way.

The Best Hotels in Nagarkot

Staying in Nagarkot is pretty cheap, just like everywhere you’ll likely visit in Nepal.

Food is also very cheap and you won't come across inflated prices anywhere.

So here’s a look at, what I believe to be, 3 of the best value places to stay in Nagarkot.

I've also included links through to the properties on Booking.com , as this is who we used to book all of our hotels in Asia, seeing as they offer the best prices and availability.

Everest Window View - Best Budget Hotel in Nagarkot ($USD15/night)

This is where we stayed and, despite there being no heating, I think it's certainly one of the best hotels in Nagarkot .

Not only does it have plenty of great reviews, but we also found that these did indeed stack up once we stayed here.

Above all else, the staff are very friendly and will cater to anything you need.

The food is pretty average, but is very affordably priced so you can't really complain!

Also, they are happy to serve you breakfast and lunch in bed, so there's no need to venture away from the warmth of your bedding!

As mentioned a couple times in this post, they also have a small balcony area downstairs where there’s a fire they are happy for you to use.

And up top, there is a large rooftop balcony that offers wonderful views out over the Himalayas.

Peaceful Cottage & Cafe Du Mont - Best Mid-range hotel in Nagarkot ($USD36/night)

For what you pay, Peaceful Cottage & Cafe Du Month is an incredibly great value hotel in Nagarkot.

As you'd expect, you get to enjoy sweeping views of the Himalayas and surrounding forests from your room, the restaurant and the large outside terrace area.

If you're willing to pay for a luxury hotel in Nagarkot, then you need to make sure that you're getting somewhere with heating, air-con, modern rooms and plenty of public areas to relax.

Well, the Fort Resort really does seem to tick all of the boxes.

It features a large outdoor terrace area offering views out over the Himalayas, as well as a multi-cuisine restaurant and stylish, modern bedrooms.

Sure, you can always pay more and stay somewhere like Club Himalaya which comes in at around 5 times the price.

However, you don't get much more in the way of luxury, and the Fort Resort seems to offer everything you need for a truly relaxing and comfortable stay in Nagarkot at any time of the year.

What are the best things to do in Nagarkot?

I will be completely honest here, don’t expect to find loads and loads of things to do in Nagarkot.

Yes, the area is becoming increasingly popular and there are lots of new hotels, however, it’s not famed for hosting endless amounts of activities.

In my opinion, I think most people head to Nagarkot to do one thing ...

Nagarkot is a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the everyday world and to relax in a truly breathtaking area.

The lack of things to do in Nagarkot is what helps make it such a popular place and what draws in tourists from far and wide.

As it is so much closer to the Himalayas, you benefit from wonderful views of the mountain range, so long as you go on a clear day.

Many hotels offer panoramic views and so do restaurants.

It’s a great place to relax with a cup of coffee, read a book, do some yoga and contemplate your life.

2. Hike the Panoramic Trail

If you're looking for longer hiking opportunities in Nagarkot, then the most popular one is the Panoramic Trail which is essentially a giant circuit around the whole area.

I will be completely honest here, I attempted this route 2 days in a row but wasn't successful in finding the entirety of the trail on either day.

I've attached a map below that you will find as you enter the main hotel district of Nagarkot.

What I think has happened is that in recent years there have been so many new hotels and roads built that the map is no longer accurate.

Still, I honestly don't think it matters if you get a little lost and do a different route.

The start of the trail, where it says “ENTRANCE TO NATURE WALK” is very easy to find and it’s a wonderful amble through local woodland.

When you come out the other side, you're on the other end of the mountain and you’ll find a brand new road that is still under construction (as of December 2018).

I spoke to some locals and they pointed me in a direction that ended up taking me back up this new road and eventually on into Nagarkot.

3. Hike up to Nagarkot View Tower

This was yet another failed attempt I had at following the recommendation of our hotel’s manager!

But not because I got lost, simply because I didn't take enough money with me.

Basically, the regional government started a scheme not long ago that requires all tourists to pay a 350 rupee fee at various points around the region.

This entitles you to a pass that lets you enter different areas.

No one thought to tell me about this and, low and behold, halfway up to the Nagarkot View Tower, you’ll find a way station that requires you to buy a pass.

I only had about 50 rupees on me at the time so ended up having to turn back.

But apparently the view from up there is very nice. However, I still enjoyed the shorter half hour walk I did up til that point.

You get sweeping views of the local countryside and get to pass by an army barracks and a number of local homes and small businesses.

Locals are very friendly and you’ll be greeted by a heartfelt “namaste” by many a passerby.

4. Sit by the fire

If you’re not out hiking, then you will soon become very cold when sat around in Nagarkot.

Which was a real problem for Cazzy, seeing as her foot still wasn't better and she couldn't do any serious walking.

Luckily, almost all hotels, houses and restaurants seem to have a fire which everyone gathers round to keep warm.

I’m not joking when I say that my favourite experience in Nagarkot was sitting outside with neighbours to the hotel around the fire.

We bought ourselves a few ciders and sat there chatting to the locals for a good few hours.

It gave us the chance to learn about everything through form the history of the area to local Nepalese pop music.

They also told us about an Irish guy who moved to the area a few years back to lead a simpler life growing vegetables.

As well as another Irish guy who visited the area and ended up loving it so much that he decided to stay and become a teacher at the local school!

5. Spot Mount Everest

If you’re looking to spot Mount Everest, but don't fancy and expensive trek, then it is possible to see the famous mountain from Nagarkot.

As long as it’s a clear day, then you get to experience breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountain range that stretches along your entire view north.

Unfortunately for us, there was mist during our entire stay here so we didn't get to see it.

But I wish you better luck!

6. Go paragliding

We didn't do this ourselves, but I can only imagine how amazing it would be to go paragliding in Nagarkot when the weather is clear!

We got to experience paragliding in La Paz in Bolivia; soaring over the mountains there and the feeling was out of this world.

Paragliding is incredibly popular all across Nepal and you’ll see an especially large number of people doing it in Pokhara .

Important things to know about Nagarkot before you arrive

It is very cold up there.

Though it is just an hour and a half from Kathmandu, it is very surprising just how much colder it becomes once you enter Nagarkot.

The total Nagarkot altitude is 2,175m (about 50% higher than in Kathmandu), so it’s usually at least a few degrees colder, but I swear it felt much worse!

As such, I recommend picking up some warmer clothing and taking it with you.

We had to wrap up in everything we had when eating dinner and opted to have breakfast in bed every day so we didn't have to leave the mild warmth offered by our bedding!

Only the most expensive hotels have heating

Another reason why it's so cold is that very few places offer heating.

Apparently, only the most expensive hotels offer it as it’s considered a luxury in the area.

But if your place does not have heating, then ask your hotel manager if there's a fire nearby you can site by.

As I mentioned above, we had a great time sitting out on the balcony with locals, chatting by the fire.

If it’s cloudy then you won’t get to see much

We ended up staying in Nagarkot for 2 nights and didn't get to see any of the Himalayas, other than one small peak that was barely visible.

Apparently, a mist descended just a few days before we arrived and it covers them completely.

However, if you do go when it’s clear, then you can sometimes even see Everest despite it being so many hundreds of miles in the distance.

You have to pay a fee to walk in many areas

In different areas around Nagarkot, you will see small tin shacks with a person working there who will ask you for a fee.

When we were there, these were very low. Coming in at around 320 rupees.

We never actually paid one, because we didn't venture past them more than a few times and simply kept our distance.

However, if you’re out and about hiking then they're hard to miss and you will be asked to pay.

When trying to get to Nagarkot View Tower, I was turned away because I don't have the money to pay to enter that area.

When hiking the panoramic trail, I came across another shack that has recently been built, presumably for when the road is finished and tourists start using it.

When speaking to locals, it turns out that they hate the boxes because of how unnecessary the fees are and how they do nothing but turn tourists away from the area.

There is only one ATM

Aside from a small local bank branch, with has no ATMs, you will find only one actual point to withdraw cash in Nagarkot.

I've provided a screenshot below of where to find it, and it’s owned by Machhapuchchhre Bank.

If you use Revolut when you travel, which we do, then you won't be able to use this ATM.

Our hotel took card luckily enough, and so did a local store, so we just about got by.

Should you visit Nagarkot?

After taking an in-depth look at things to do and places to visit in Nagarkot, it’s worth deciding if visiting Nagarkot is actually right for you.

And, well, there is no right or wrong answer. It all depends on what you are looking for from your stay in Nepal.

If you are limited on time and want to get in some serious hiking and to visit many of Nepal’s most popular sites, then I’d say it’s probably not worth stopping in Nagarkot.

On the flip-side, if you’ve got plenty of time and want to experience some of the more tranquil, peaceful aspects of Nepal, then I would highly recommend it.

Indeed, it forms a key part of the 3 week Nepal itinerary I wrote about .

For me, the biggest issue with Nagarkot was the cold, but that was partly our fault, seeing as we didn't have enough thick clothing with us.

Aside from that, it’s a great place to relax for 2 or 3 days and to partake in some long hikes each day.

On the way, you’ll get plenty of stunning photo opportunities of the surrounding hills, homes and, of course, the Himalayas!

The people in Nagarkot, like everywhere in Nepal, are very friendly and you will get plenty of opportunities to stop and chat to people and get to learn about their way of life.

Overall, it’s a nice break away from the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu and was a great end to our 3 month stint that took us around Sri Lanka , India and finally Nepal.

Nagarkot is a magnificent place to spend the morn as well as the evening. For that reason, it is called the best natural site of Bhaktapur. But, natural trails are not the only things that define Nagarkot. It has indeed some of the most beautiful spots like the Nagarkot Buddhist Monastery besides natural beauty.

However, till today very few people know about this place. And they who reach out there, frantically admire the place. Although it is a destination, that you can take as a part of your hike this place undoubtedly gives you the abstract of hiking.

Furthermore, this place lies on Nagarkot Ghimiregaun Rd, Baluwapati Deupur. That means a few steps ahead of Nagarkot Tower.

Nagarkot somehow is more famous for its view tower. Anyone who steps on Nagarkot can not leave Nagarkot without being in the view tower. Hopping up in a few staircases through a jungle belatedly ends your journey to the view tower. It has a very small area but it is beautiful and yes, peaceful.

Nagarkot Bat Cave

Nagarkot Bat Cave sounds interesting. However, it is not popular as other destinations in Nagarkot. Very few people truly know about it. This bat cave is about 2 km away from one of the adored destinations of Bhaktapur, Muhan Pokhari. So, you can have a better experience of hiking there. With that, one can experience the Yeti Cave too.

Buddha Peace Park

Around Nagarkot, there is also a Buddha peace park along with Nagarkot Buddhist Monastery. A park where you can end up hiking and breathe fresh wood air. The park also offers the activity of afforestation. And, that sounds unquestionably cool.  Moreover, it has a pristine statue of Lord Buddha for praying.

Nagarkot Waterfall and Muhan Pokhari

Nagarkot is more beautiful than it shows in the images. Although it has few cultural values than the other places of Bhaktapur, it covers up all that imperfections with its natural vows.

The Nagarkot Waterfall, Muhan Pokari, MuhanPokhari Waterfall, Jungle, and Waterfall viewpoint, these all places that are simply the grimaces of Nagarkot.  Beautiful as always.

Muhan Pokhari

Telkot is a mediating point between the changu Narayan temple and Nagarkot. Also, a small village full of hidden streams and waterfalls. This place is perfect for the green panther as well as for the swimmer who loves to dive into a natural pool. 

Some shrines

There are some local shrines where you can sneak out for a moment in Nagarkot. That includes the Bastola Kul Mandir, Seti Devi Temple, Mahankal Temple, and Kali Devi Temple. Nonetheless, the last one holds a dark history in it.

How to reach there?

Nagarkot is not that far from the capital of Nepal. It’s only 28.8 km away from Kathmandu. That means it takes merely 1 hour and 15 minutes of a taxi ride to reach there. You can also use the local bus which departs from Kamalbinayak Bus Park, Bhaktapur to Nagarkot.

To reach Kamalbinayak Bus Park, you can choose different routes. Like:

If you are staying near Thamel, then you can take a bus from Bagbazaar, which’s last stop is Kamalabinayak. From there, you can take another bus to Nagarkot. However, be sure, to get on the bus to Nagarkot. Since it is a Bus park, you will find buses going to various destinations. (The bus park is known as Nagarkot Bus Park and is located right north-west corner of Kamalpokhari of Bhaktapur)

If you are staying near the Patan area or Jhamsikhel area, then, you can take the bus from Lagankhel that directly goes up to Kamalbinayak. However, you need to make sure that you get on the bus that goes via New Thimi (Naya Thimi) or Naya Bato. And, once you reach Kamalbinayak, follow the aforementioned instructions.

Note: If you are going to visit Nagarkot Tower, then you need to go further south-east following the single road going.
